238. The Environmental Dependence of the Luminosity-Size Relation for Galaxies

Abstract

We have examined the luminosity-size relationship as a function of environment for 12150 SDSS galaxies with precise visual classifications from the catalog of Nair & Abraham (2010a). Our analysis is subdivided into investigations of early-type galaxies and late-type galaxies. Early-type galaxies reveal a surprisingly tight luminosity-size relation. The dispersion in luminosity about the fiducial relation is only ~0.14 dex (0.35 mag), even though the sample contains galaxies which differ by a factor of almost 100 in luminosity. The dispersion about the luminosity-size relation is comparable to the dispersion about the fundamental plane, even though the luminosity-size relation is fundamentally simpler and computed using purely photometric parameters. The key contributors to the dispersion about the luminosity-size relation are found to be color and central concentration. Expanding our analysis to the full range of morphological types, we show that the slope, zero point, and scatter about the luminosity-size relation is independent of environmental density. Our study thus indicates that whatever process is building galaxies is doing so in a way that preserves fundamental scaling laws even as the typical luminosity of galaxies changes with environment. However, the distribution of galaxies along the luminosity-size relation is found to be strongly dependent on galaxy environment. This variation is in the sense that, at a given morphology, larger and more luminous galaxies are rarer in sparser environments. Our analysis of late-type galaxy morphologies reveals that scatter increases towards later Hubble types. 239. On the Fraction of Barred Spiral Galaxies

Abstract

We investigate the stellar masses of strongly barred spiral galaxies. Our analysis is based on a sample of ~14000 visually-classified nearby galaxies given in Nair & Abraham 2010(a). The fraction of barred spiral galaxies is found to be a strong function of stellar mass and star formation history, with a minimum near the characteristic mass at which bimodality is seen in the stellar populations of galaxies. We also find bar fractions are very sensitive to the central concentration of galaxies below the transition mass but not above it. This suggests that whatever process is causing the creation of the red and blue sequences is either influencing, or being influenced by, structural changes which manifest themselves in the absence of bars. Abstract

Visible and near-infrared (NIR) upconversion luminescence (UCL) emissions originating from the BaY2F8: Yb3+, Tm3+ systems were investigated under a laser excitation at 980 nm. The BaY2F8:20 mol% Yb3+, x mol% Tm3+ and BaY2F8: y mol% Yb3+, 0.5 mol% Tm3+ phosphors showed prominent UCL at 800 and 810 nm. The optimized doping concentrations of Yb3+ and Tm3+ in the BaY2F8 host matrix were evaluated, their spectroscopic properties were determined, and studies on their temperature-dependent behaviour were carried out. The temperature-sensing properties were studied by generating the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the UCL peaks originating from the thermally-coupled energy levels of the Tm3+ ions. The Stark sublevels of 1G4 level of Tm3+ ions were utilized to estimate the temperature-sensing abilities of the phosphor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

242. Multifunctional applications of TiO2 thin films synthesized by sol–gel dip coating technique.

Abstract

Pure TiO2 thin films were synthesized by non-aqueous sol–gel method using indigenously fabricated programmable low-cost dip coating unit. The structural, morphological, and optical characterizations of the thin films annealed at various temperatures were carried out to investigate the influence of annealing temperature on the film characteristics. Thin film samples were characterized using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, AFM, profilometry, and UV–Vis spectrophotometery. GIXRD patterns shows phase transformation from amorphous to crystalline at 723 K and into a mixed phase at 1223 K. The average crystallite size of thin films increases from 13.45 to 69.24 nm with increase in annealing temperature. XPS analysis confirmed the phase composition of the thin films. HR-TEM and FE-SEM images revealed spherical surface morphology. FE-SEM micrographs showed increase in mean particle size with increase in annealing temperature. UV–Vis optical transmittance spectra indicated a decrease in optical band gap from 3.47 to 3.03 eV with increase in annealing temperature. Photocatalytic activity of thin films was evaluated by monitoring the degradation of aqueous methylene blue (MB) dye under sunlight. The results indicated that thin film annealed at 723 K in anatase phase has the highest photocatalytic activity with 79.35% degradation. This thin film exhibited high antimicrobial activity against gram-negative (E. coli) and gram-positive (S. aureus) pathogens. Moreover this thin film possesses durability, reusability, hydrophilicity, anti-fogging behavior, and good wetting performance. These findings provide valuable insights into the multifunctional application of TiO2 thin films, highlighting their potential for environmental and biomedical applications. Abstract

Background: Low bioavailability, highly variable blood levels and poor clinical efficacy of Aripiprazole (ARP) are primarily linked to its hydrophobic nature. This investigation focused on the formulation of ARP loaded Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLCs) incorporated in thermoreversible in situ intranasal gel for brain delivery. Materials and Methods: The high-speed homogenization method was used to formulate ARP loaded NLCs. A factorial design was utilized to optimize the particle size, entrapment efficiency and drug release of NLCs by selecting Tween 80 as a surfactant and stearic acid and castor oil as solid and liquid lipids, respectively. The ARP loaded NLCs thermoreversible in situ gel was fabricated using Poloxamer 407 as a phase transition agent and carbopol 940 as a mucoadhesive agent. The gel formulation was characterized for various pharmaceutical properties and nasal ciliotoxicity. Results: The optimized NLC (Z7) had nano size (~150 nm), good entrapment efficiency (~93%) and higher drug release (~75% in 12 hr). The formulated thermoreversible in situ gel (Z2 G) showed ideal gelling temperature, gel strength, and pH suitable for nasal use in addition to steady drug release and greater permeation. The toxicity study data revealed that the gel is safe for intranasal application. Conclusion: The prepared thermoreversible in situ gel of ARP loaded NLCs showed excellent potential for intranasal use and can be a feasible alternative to oral therapy in schizophrenia. Abstract

Background: To assess the potential for targeting the brain through intranasal delivery, this study focuses on optimizing and developing a mucoadhesive in situ gel formulation containing Dolutegravir nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: Employing a central composite design, the study optimized the concentration of variables of Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, X1) and Poloxamer 407 (X2) on the gelation temperature (Y1) and drug release (Y2). The optimized drug loaded nanoformulations were assessed for various pharmaceutical features, in vitro release and evaluated in vivo. Results: Both variables significantly impacted the responses (p<0.05). The selected formulation displayed beneficial rheological characteristics and prolonged drug release. In vivo pharmacokinetic analysis in rats post-intranasal administration of the optimized in situ gel demonstrated markedly higher (p<0.0001) Cmax (2-fold) and AUC0-t (3-fold) values in the targeted brain tissue as compared to intravenous administration. Reduced Dolutegravir exposure in the central compartment validates limited absorption with nasal therapy. Conclusion: The study affirms the potential of the in situ mucoadhesive nasal gel in delivering Dolutegravir to the brain.
