Abstract In modern era, the maintenance of public infrastructure often takes up a large share of financial budget for a city. The management of these urban assets is supported by a frequently updated inventory reflecting facility conditions. Traditional methods relying on inspection staff or sensors are faced with two main challenges: comprehensive and standardized data collection; quick and automatic assessment process. In this technical note, we introduce a unified method for condition assessment, purely based on street views and machine learning to develop perception quantification models with pairwise labeling datasets. In this way, the two problems could be solved with automatic and scalable processes, updatable algorithms, and affordable costs The method has been tested in the city of Ulaanbaatar, in which a benchmark covering the assessment of eight types of urban infrastructure (roadway, road curbs, road markings, road signs, sidewalks, catch basins, guardrails, and manholes) is demonstrated.

Refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW) of high strength aluminum alloy has a wide application prospect. However, there are few studies between the microstructure and macroscopic corrosion behavior, causing a significant impediment in corrosion protection of the joint. Therefore, the microstructure and corrosion behavior of 7050 aluminum alloy RFSSW joint was investigated in this paper. Due to the difference of microstructure, the joint can be divided into five zones, namely stir zone (SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), heat affected zone-I (HAZ-I), heat affected zone-II (HAZ-II) and base metal (BM). Therein, the grain size and the micron-sized second phase particles of SZ were fine, while other areas were coarse. And they were mainly Al2CuMg and Al7Cu2Fe. After intergranular corrosion and exfoliation corrosion tests, it was indicated that the grain morphology and second phase particles did not significantly affect the corrosion susceptibility, but the continuous degree of intergranular nano-precipitates was the key factor. A coefficient r was defined to quantitatively characterize the continuous degree of intergranular nano-precipitates. The HAZ-II and TMAZ exhibited high corrosion sensitivity with a high value of r, while HAZ-I and SZ exhibited low corrosion sensitivity with a low r. The corrosion mechanism was also briefly discussed.

Abstract Background Adolescent obesity has been reported to have deleterious consequences but is considered a promising modifiable risk factor. We aimed to investigate the optimal intervention for obese and overweight children and adolescents. Methods We searched the Medline (PubMed, 1946–December 2020), PsycINFO (Ovid, 1927–December 2020), Cochrane library (1966–December 2020), Web of Science (1900–December 2020), Embase (1974–December 2020), CINAHL (1937–December 2020), Chinese Biomedical Literature (1978–December 2020), and ClinicalTrials.gov (December 2020) databases. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting the association between various interventions and obese/overweight children and adolescents. The quality of the included studies was judged by two independent reviewers using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was conducted to summarize the comparative effectiveness of interventions based on several outcomes. Results We included 118 RCTs comprising 71,064 participants in our analyses. Based on the outcome of the body mass index (BMI), face-to-face physical activity (FTF PA) combined with dietary intervention (DI) (mean difference [MD] = − 0.98; 95% credible interval [CrI] − 1.19, − 0.77), FTF multi-lifestyle intervention (MLI) (MD = − 0.95; 95% CrI − 1.14, − 0.75), and mobile health (MH)-delivered MLI (MD = − 0.87; 95% CrI − 1.63, − 0.09) showed significant benefits over the named control group (NCG). For the outcome of BMI z-score, FTF PA+DI (MD = − 0.10; 95% CrI − 0.15, − 0.04) and MH-delivered PA+DI (MD = − 0.09; 95% CrI − 0.14, − 0.04) were more effective than the NCG. Wire-based additive manufacturing (AM) shows a promising prospect in fabricating large-scale titanium aerospace components at a high deposition rate and low cost. The currently used wire-based AM processes commonly utilize a lateral feeding method with an acute angle to form a deposit, which reduces the flexibility and increases the difficulty of control in making complex components. In this work, a novel coaxial laser metal wire deposition (LMWD) process was used to fabricate the most widely used titanium alloy, Ti6Al4V. The coaxial wire feeding was achieved by a coaxial laser head through a vertically fed wire surrounded by an annular shape beam at focal plane. The surface quality, microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited Ti6Al4V were examined. To show the characteristic of the coaxial LMWD process, conventional lateral LMWD was also conducted for comparison. The deposited Ti6Al4V wall showed a high surface quality and a microstructure with a mix of equiaxed β grains and columnar prior-β grains rather than coarse prior-β grains. The refined microstructure resulted in a low anisotropy in mechanical properties. The mechanism of the equiaxed β grains formation was also discussed. The combined effect of the reduced thermal gradient and the heterogeneous nucleation from the coaxial wire feeding played an important role in determining the refined microstructures in coaxial LMWD.

Abstract To solve the problem of the mismatch of the wideband underdetermined direction of arrival (DOA) estimation under the condition of the On‐grid model, this paper extends the narrowband Off‐Grid model to wideband and proposes a new DOA estimation algorithm for Off‐Grid sources based on group sparsity. The proposed algorithm first obtains the preliminary estimation result under the current predefined discrete grid through the group sparsity wideband DOA estimation algorithm. Then, the Off‐Grid optimisation problem is adopted to calculate the Off‐Grid deviation vector. It is also assumed that the off‐grid deviation vectors of each frequency subband are exactly the same, thereby reducing the number of parameters to be estimated. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can not only maintain similar or even better estimation accuracy but also greatly reduce the computational complexity. Finally, simulation is conducted and the results verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method.

Abstract Background Maternal anxiety induced by neonatal jaundice has adverse effects on maternal and infant health, but there was no specific tool to identify the anxiety level of mothers. This study aims to develop a Maternal Anxiety for Neonatal Jaundice Scale (MANJS) and to validate it in the target population. Methods An initial 11-items MANJS was developed through literature review, expert panel consultation, and a pilot-test. Subsequently, mothers of neonates with jaundice were recruited from the Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Hainan Province, China, from June to December 2018, for a formal questionnaire survey. Based on the data collected, the scale was validated for construct validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, content validity, and internal consistency reliability after the items screening. Results The reliability and validity of MANJS were validated in 1127 mothers of jaundiced neonates. After the item with cross-loadings was removed using exploratory factor analysis, MANJS consisted of two dimensions and 10 items, with a cumulative variance contribution of 74.36% and factor loadings above 0.6 for all items. The confirmatory factor analysis identified three items with cross-factor loading or error correlation and then they were removed orderly. The further confirmatory factor analysis showed a good construct validity for the 7-item MANJS, with standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) = 0.029, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.068, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.961, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = 0.937, incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.961, normed fit index (NFI) = 0.954, goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.998, adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) = 0.996, respectively. The average variance extracted values (AVE) of the two factors were 0.80 and 0.72, and the combined reliability (CR) were 0.94 and 0.88, respectively. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.90 for the MANJS, and split-half reliability was 0.72. Conclusions MANJS was demonstrated to have satisfactory reliability and validity in evaluating maternal anxiety caused by neonatal jaundice among Chinese postpartum women.

Abstract The streamer dynamics and charge self‐erasing of two counter‐propagating plasmas generated by repetitively pulsed surface dielectric barrier discharge are investigated using electrical and optical diagnosis, and a two‐dimensional fluid model. Three distinct discharge phases of primary, transitional and secondary streamers are identified in a single‐pulse discharge through the time‐resolved plasma images. Moreover, a merging phenomenon of the two opposing primary streamers is observed at the middle position of the discharge gap. Compared to the first pulse, a low streamer propagation velocity of the primary streamer is measured during the subsequent discharge process due to the limitation of residual surface charges left by the previous discharge. No significant differences of the transferred charge and the deposited energy are obtained in the sequential pulses at a discharge gap of 9 mm. Numerical simulations show that a reduction for the plasma intensity of the approached two primary streamers is attributed by the accumulated charge on the dielectric surface and gathered positive charges in the streamer head. Numerical and experimental studies indicate that the residual charges can be erased by the secondary streamer through the drifted electrons, namely that a phenomenon of charge self‐erasing can be realized in the individual pulse.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the association between types and numbers of comorbidities and stigma among breast cancer survivors (BCSs). A cross-sectional study was conducted among 937 BCSs in Shanghai Cancer Rehabilitation Club. All participants were asked to fill in an online questionnaire including Stigma Scale for Chronic Illnesses 8-item version (SSCI-8) and questions on sociodemographic characteristics and health status. Multivariate linear regression was used to analyze the association between comorbidities and stigma, adjusting for confounding factors. Results showed that nearly 70% of the participants had one or more comorbidities. The participants with stroke, digestive diseases or musculoskeletal diseases had significantly higher stigma than those without the above comorbidities. In addition, stigma was higher among survivors in the group with a greater number of comorbidities. Thus, it is important to strengthen the management of stigma in BCSs, especially for those with comorbidities.

AIM: To explore whether nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 2 (NOX2) is expressed in fungal keratitis in mice and investigate its role in this disease. METHODS: NOX2 expression was detected in C57BL/6 mice. After testing the inhibitory effect of diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPI) on NOX2, its impact on clinical performance, myeloperoxidase levels, the number of colonies forming units, the level of H3, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the release of cytokines [NF-κB, interleukin-17A (IL-17A), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Nrf2, IL-10, and TGF-β] were compared. A one-way ANOVA and an unpaired, two-tailed Student's t-test was used to determine the statistical significance. RESULTS: NOX2 expression was significantly increased after Aspergillus fumigatus injection in corneas and that this increase could be reduced by treatment with DPI. DPI treatment produced more severe inflammation and resulted in higher clinical scores, more neutrophils infiltration, a weakened ability to clear fungi, the release of fewer ROS and the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps. Treatment with DPI increased the expression of the proinflammatory cytokines NF-κB, IL-17A, IL-6, and TNF-α and decreased the expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokines Nrf2, IL-10 and TGF-β compared to their expression levels without DPI treatment. CONCLUSION: NOX2 plays an important role against Aspergillus fumigatus in the mouse cornea through killing fungi and limiting the degree of inflammation.

Abstract Background The H5 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) has caused huge economic losses to the poultry industry and is a threat to human health. A rapid and simple test is needed to confirm infection in suspected cases during disease outbreaks. Methods In this study, we developed a reverse transcription recombinase-aided amplification (RT-RAA) assay for the detection of H5 subtype AIV. Assays were performed at a single temperature (39 °C), and the results were obtained within 20 min. Results The assay showed no cross-detection with Newcastle disease virus or infectious bronchitis virus. The analytical sensitivity was 103 RNA copies/μL at a 95% confidence interval according to probit regression analysis, with 100% specificity. Abstract Background Heterosis is a phenomenon that hybrids show superior performance over their parents. The successful utilization of heterosis has greatly improved rice productivity, but the molecular basis of heterosis remains largely unclear. Results Here, the transcriptomes of young panicles and leaves of the two widely grown two-line super hybrid rice varieties (Jing-Liang-You-Hua-Zhan (JLYHZ) and Long-Liang-You-Hua-Zhan (LLYHZ)) and their parents were analyzed by RNA-seq. Transcriptome profiling of the hybrids revealed 1,778 ~ 9,404 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in two tissues, which were identified by comparing with their parents. GO, and KEGG enrichment analysis showed that the pathways significantly enriched in both tissues of two hybrids were all related to yield and resistance, like circadian rhythm (GO:0,007,623), response to water deprivation (GO:0,009,414), and photosynthetic genes (osa00196). Allele-specific expression genes (ASEGs) were also identified in hybrids. The ASEGs were most significantly enriched in ionotropic glutamate receptor signaling pathway, which was hypothesized to be potential amino acid sensors in plants. Moreover, the ASEGs were also differentially expressed between parents. The number of variations in ASEGs is higher than expected, especially for large effect variations. The DEGs and ASEGs are the potential reasons for the formation of heterosis in the two elite super hybrid rice. Conclusions Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the heterosis of two-line super hybrid rice and facilitate the exploitation of heterosis in hybrid rice breeding with high yield heterosis.

A plenty of cytochrome P450s have been annotated in the Daldinia eschosholzii genome. Inspired by the fact that some P450s have been reported to catalyze the carbon-nitrogen (C–N) bond formation, we were curious about whether hybrids through C–N bond formation could be generated in the indole-3-carbinol (I3C) exposed culture of D. eschscholzii. As expected, two skeletally undescribed polyketide-indole hybrids, designated as indolpolyketone A and B (1 and 2), were isolated and assigned to be constructed through C–N bond formation. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectra. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were determined by comparing the recorded and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Furthermore, the plausible biosynthetic pathways for 1 and 2 were proposed. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited significant antiviral activity against H1N1 with IC50 values of 45.2 and 31.4 μM, respectively. In brief, compounds 1 and 2 were reported here for the first time and were the first example of polyketide-indole hybrids pieced together through C–N bond formation in the I3C-exposed culture of D. eschscholzii. Therefore, this study expands the knowledge about the chemical production of D. eschscholzii through precursor-directed biosynthesis (PDB).

Abstract Background Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by persistent antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) positivity with a wide manifestation spectrum. A risk stratification is needed for management guidance and prognosis assessment. We aimed to identify phenotypes among aPL-positive patients and assess the prognosis of each phenotype. Methods This was a single-center, prospective cohort study of aPL-positive patients presented to Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 2012 to 2020. Demographic characteristics, aPL-related manifestations, cardiovascular risk factors, and antibodies profiles were recorded. The primary endpoint was defined as a combination of newly onset thrombosis, major bleeding events, non-criteria manifestations, and all-cause death. Hierarchical cluster analysis and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were performed. Results Four clusters among 383 patients (70.2% female; mean age 37.7 years) were identified. Cluster 1 (n = 138): patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and non-criteria manifestations; cluster 2 (n = 112): patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors; cluster 3 (n = 83): female patients with obstetric morbidity; cluster 4 (n = 50): patients with isolated lupus anticoagulant (LA) positivity. Non-criteria manifestations were found aggregated with SLE from cluster analysis of variables. Cluster 3 showed the best outcome, while cluster 2 suffered highest frenquency of newly onset arterial thrombosis. Conclusions We identified 4 clinical phenotypes of aPL-positive patients. Non-criteria manifestations may indicate underlying SLE, for which immunosuppressive therapy besides anticoagulation may be necessary. Patients with isolated LA positivity suffered similar risks with secondary APS and patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Attention should be paid to male patients, and the screening of cardiovascular risk factors should never be ignored.

BackgroundDepression escalating public health concern and the modest efficacy of currently available treatments have prompted efforts to identify modifiable risk factors associated with depression symptoms. Physical inactivity, poor nutrition, or other lifestyle behaviors are among the potentially modifiable risk factors most consistently linked with depression. Past evidence regarding the single effect of physical activity (PA) or dietary quality (DQ) on reducing the risk of depression symptoms has been well-documented. However, the association of the joint effect of PA and DQ on depression symptoms has never been investigated in a representative sample of adults. ObjectiveThis study investigates the association between PA and depression symptoms and between DQ and depression symptoms, and their combined effects on US adults. MethodsData were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007 to 2018 cycles. The primary exposures were DQ and PA, measured using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 and the metabolic equivalent (MET) minutes per week reported in questionnaires, respectively. Depression symptoms were defined as a 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score of ≥10. We created 4 lifestyle categories: healthy diet and active individuals, unhealthy diet but active individuals, healthy diet but inactive individuals, and unhealthy diet and inactive individuals. Participants were considered to have a healthy diet if they fell within the 60th percentile of the HEI-2015 or to be active if they met the current guidelines for PA. A survey-multivariable logistic regression approach was used to model adjust the variables relevant to the associations, and an age-adjusted prevalence for depression symptoms was calculated following the NHANES guidelines. ResultsIn total, 19,295 participants represented a weighted number of 932.5 million adults aged 20 to 80 years in the noninstitutionalized US population. The total age-adjusted prevalence of depression symptoms among all respondents was 7.08% (1507/19,295). Of the respondents, 81.97% (15,816/19,295) met the PA recommendation and 26.79% (5170/19,295) scored at or above the 60th percentile on the HEI-2015. Depression symptoms were inversely associated with a higher level of PA (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.819, 95% CI 0.716-0.938) and healthy DQ (AOR 0.809, 95% CI 0.701-0.931), respectively. A healthy diet combined with recommended PA was associated with a significantly lower risk of depression symptoms (AOR 0.658, 95% CI 0.538-0.803) than those who consumed an unhealthy diet but were physically active (AOR 0.890, 95% CI 0.765-1.038) or consumed a healthy diet but were physically inactive (AOR 1.077, 95% CI 0.817-1.406). ConclusionsOur findings indicate that people with a healthy diet and recommended PA have a lower risk of depression symptoms than those with an unhealthy diet and a low level of PA. A healthy dietary habit and regular PA are potential precautions against depression.

Ta-10W alloy has great potential in the aerospace and nuclear industries due to its good formability, high melting point and excellent high-temperature strength. The purpose of this study was to experimentally research the tribological behaviors of Ta-10W at elevated temperatures and the effects of temperatures on the friction coefficient and the wear rate of Ta-10W in sliding wear. It was found that the main wear mechanism of the material at 100°C was abrasive wear, as well as adhesive wear and slight oxidative wear occurred at 200°C and 300°C. The friction coefficients increased as the temperature rose, which was attributed to the increase in metal viscosity at elevated temperatures. The wear rate gradually decreased with the temperature rising, such that there was a conversion from severe wear to light wear. At 200°C and 300°C, a large amount of stable oxide film covered the scar surface, resulting in decreased wear rate.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are commonly associated with poor prognosis and are primarily caused by germline mutations in the SMARCB1/INI-1 gene. However, these tumors are rarely found in the spine. This case report presents the case of a 3-year-old boy diagnosed with a lumbosacral dumbbell-shaped epithelioid MPNST, an extremely uncommon manifestation. Immunohistochemistry revealed the complete absence of the SMARCB1/INI-1 protein, and genetic testing identified a novel germline mutation in the SMARCB1/INI-1 gene in both the patient and his father, suggesting a “second-hit loss.” One year of follow-up after the tumor's radical resection revealed no suspected metastasis. This case report offers novel genetic research results regarding spinal dumbbell-shaped MPNSTs. Six studies, including 13 cases associated with spinal dumbbell MPNST, were included in the literature. The range of age of these patients varied from 2 to 71 years. Of the 12 known patients diagnosed with spinal dumbbell MPNST, only one received radiation therapy, while the rest underwent surgery. Two patients who underwent partial resection had metastases after surgery, while one of the five patients who underwent complete surgical resection alone had no distant metastases and a good prognosis, indicating that radical resection is more likely to be effective in inhibiting distant metastasis and improving the prognosis.

Making tea from jujube leaves changed the chemical composition and aroma composition of jujube leaves. Here, Through LC-MS, GC-IMS, and GC-MS technology, we have revealed the effect of jujube leaf processing changes on metabolites. LC-MS identified 468 non-volatile metabolites, while GC-IMS and GC-MS detected 52 and 24 volatile metabolites, respectively. 109 non-volatile metabolites exhibiting more pronounced differences were screened. Most lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids, amino acids, and flavonoids increased significantly after processing. GC-IMS and GC-MS analysis revealed that the contents of aldehydes and ketones were significantly increased, while esters and partial alcohols were decreased after processing into jujube leaf tea. The main flavor substances of fresh jujube leaf and jujube leaf tea were eugenol and (E) - 2-Hexenal, respectively. Furthermore, amino acids and lipids were closely linked to the formation of volatile metabolites. Our study provided new insights into the changes in metabolites of jujube leaves processed into jujube leaf tea, and had great potential for industrial application. It laid a foundation for further research on fruit tree leaf tea.

IntroductionTraditional DBS is usually conducted under local anesthesia (LA) which is intolerable to some patients, DBS under general anesthesia (GA) was opted to extended surgical indication. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of bilateral subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) for Parkinson’s disease (PD) under asleep and awake anesthesia state in 1-year postoperative follow-up.MethodsTwenty-one PD patients were assigned to asleep group and 25 patients to awake group. Patients received bilateral STN-DBS under different anesthesia state. The PD participants were interviewed and assessed preoperatively and at 1-year postoperative follow-up.ResultsAt 1-year follow-up, compared surgical coordinate in two groups, the left-side Y of asleep group showed more posterior than awake group (Y was-2.39 ± 0.23 in asleep group, −1.46 ± 0.22 in awake group, p = 0.007). Compared with preoperative OFF MED state, MDS-UPDRS III scores in OFF MED/OFF STIM state remained unchanged, while in OFF MED/ON STIM state were significantly improved in awake and asleep groups, yet without significant difference. Compared with preoperative ON MED state, MDS-UPDRS III scores in ON MED/OFF STIM, and ON MED/ON STIM state remained unchanged in both groups. In non-motor outcomes, PSQI, HAMD, and HAMA score significantly improved in asleep group compared to awake group at 1-year follow-up (PSQI, HAMD, and HAMA score in 1-year follow-up were 9.81 ± 4.43; 10.00 ± 5.80; 5.71 ± 4.75 in awake group, 6.64 ± 4.14; 5.32 ± 3.78; 3.76 ± 3.87 in asleep group, p = 0.009; 0.008; 0.015, respectively), while there was no significant difference in PDQ-39, NMSS, ESS, PDSS score, and cognitive function. Anesthesia methods was significantly associated with improvement of HAMA and HAMD score (p = 0.029; 0.002, respectively). No difference in LEDD, stimulation parameters and adverse events was observed between two groups.DiscussionAsleep STN-DBS may be considered a good alternative method for PD patients. It is largely consistent with awake STN-DBS in motor symptoms and safety. Yet, it showed higher improvement in terms of mood and sleep compared to awake group at 1-year follow-up.

Abstract As a major cause of clinical chronic infection, microbial biofilms/microcolonies in host tissues essentially live in 3D‐constrained microenvironments, which potentially modulate their spatial self‐organization and morphodynamics. However, it still remains unclear whether and how mechanical cues of 3D confined microenvironments, for example, extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness, exert an impact on antibiotic resistance of bacterial biofilms/microcolonies. With a high‐throughput antibiotic sensitivity testing (AST) platform, it is revealed that 3D ECM rigidities greatly modulate their resistance to diverse antibiotics. The microcolonies in 3D ECM with human tissue‐specific rigidities varying from 0.5 to 20 kPa show a ≈2–10 000‐fold increase in minimum inhibitory concentration, depending on the types of antibiotics. The authors subsequently identified that the increase in 3D ECM rigidities leads to the downregulation of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, which is responsible for enhanced antibiotic resistance. Further, it is shown that fumarate, as a potentiator of TCA cycle activity, can alleviate the elevated antibiotic resistance and thus remarkably improve the efficacy of antibiotics against bacterial microcolonies in 3D confined ECM, as confirmed in the chronic infection mice model. These findings suggest fumarate can be employed as an antibiotic adjuvant to effectively treat infections induced by bacterial biofilms/microcolonies in a 3D‐confined environment.

Context constraint strength (constraining and neutral) and word predictability (predictable and unpredictable) were strictly manipulated. The statistical results suggest that: (1) There is a Context Predictability Effect for Chinese native speakers in reading processing, which is consistent with most previous studies; (2) There is also a Context Predictability Effect for advanced Chinese L2 learners; (3) Both Chinese native speakers and Chinese L2 learners have a prediction error cost in reading processing, a finding different from those of much previous research. (4) Chinese L2 learners are significantly slower than Chinese native speakers when they conduct predictive reading processing. This paper is very enlightening in that it identifies the existence of a prediction error cost in Chinese L2 processing by means of behavioral experiments, providing evidence for the hypothesis of Lexical Prediction. In a strongly predictive setting, when encountering a plausible but unpredictable word, the brain must expend extra effort to suppress, revise, or reanalyze the material, and this may account for the prediction error cost.

BackgroundWork-family conflict is common among emergency department physicians. Identifying the factors associated with work-family conflict is key to reducing its negative impact on mental health and work attitudes. However, the work-family conflict of Chinese emergency department physicians and the related factors have been scarcely studied.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the current status and related factors of work-family conflict among Chinese emergency department physicians.MethodsA national cross-sectional study was conducted among emergency department physicians in China from June 2018 to August 2018. A standard questionnaire was used to investigate the demographic characteristics, work-related factors, and work-family conflict of emergency department physicians. The generalized linear regression analysis was used to identify the related factors of work-family conflict.ResultsA total of 10,457 licensed emergency department physicians participated in the study. The average score of work-family conflict among the enrolled emergency department physicians was 19.27 ± 3.94, and the prevalence of high levels of work-family conflict was 69.19%. The multivariable regression analysis showed that emergency physicians who were female (linear regression coefficient, −0.25; SE, 0.08; P = 0.002), older than 40 years (linear regression coefficient,−0.53; SE, 0.14; P < 0.001), and earning more than 4,000 CNY per month (e.g., 4,001~6,000 vs. ≤4,000 CNY: linear regression coefficient, −0.17; SE, 0.09; P = 0.04) had lower work-family conflicts. However, emergency department physicians who were married (linear regression coefficient, 0.37; SE, 0.11; P < 0.001), highly educated (linear regression coefficient, 0.46; SE, 0.10; P < 0.001), had a high technical title (e.g., intermediate vs. junior technical title: linear regression coefficient, 0.61; SE, 0.09; P < 0.001), worked in a high-grade hospital (e.g., tertiary hospital vs. emergency center: linear regression coefficient, 0.38; SE, 0.11; P < 0.001), had a higher frequency of night shifts (e.g., 6~10 night shifts per month vs. 0~5 night shifts per month: linear regression coefficient, 0.43; SE, 0.10; P < 0.001), self-perceived shortage of physicians in the department (linear regression coefficient, 2.22; SE, 0.08; P < 0.001), and experienced verbal abuse (linear regression coefficient, 1.48; SE, 0.10; P < 0.001) and physical violence (linear regression coefficient, 0.84; SE, 0.08; P < 0.001) in the workplace had higher work-family conflict scores.ConclusionMost emergency department physicians in China experience a high-level work-family conflict. Hospital administrations are recommended to develop family-friendly workplace policies, establish a scientific shift system, and keep the number of emergency department physicians to meet the demand to reduce work-family conflict.

Introduction: Ubiquitination is involved in many biological processes and its predictive value for prognosis in cervical cancer is still unclear.Methods: To further explore the predictive value of the ubiquitination-related genes we obtained URGs from the Ubiquitin and Ubiquitin-like Conjugation Database, analyzed datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus databases, and then selected differentially expressed ubiquitination-related genes between normal and cancer tissues. Then, DURGs significantly associated with overall survival were selected through univariate Cox regression. Machine learning was further used to select the DURGs. Then, we constructed and validated a reliable prognostic gene signature by multivariate analysis. In addition, we predicted the substrate proteins of the signature genes and did a functional analysis to further understand the molecular biology mechanisms. The study provided new guidelines for evaluating cervical cancer prognosis and also suggested new directions for drug development.Results: By analyzing 1,390 URGs in GEO and TCGA databases, we obtained 175 DURGs. Our results showed 19 DURGs were related to prognosis. Finally, eight DURGs were identified via machine learning to construct the first ubiquitination prognostic gene signature. Patients were stratified into high-risk and low-risk groups and the prognosis was worse in the high-risk group. In addition, these gene protein levels were mostly consistent with their transcript level. According to the functional analysis of substrate proteins, the signature genes may be involved in cancer development through the transcription factor activity and the classical P53 pathway ubiquitination-related signaling pathways. Additionally, 71 small molecular compounds were identified as potential drugs.Conclusion: We systematically studied the influence of ubiquitination-related genes on prognosis in cervical cancer, established a prognostic model through a machine learning algorithm, and verified it. Also, our study provides a new treatment strategy for cervical cancer.

Abstract Thanks to the gustatory system, humans can experience the flavors in foods and drinks while avoiding the intake of some harmful substances. Although great advances in the fields of biotechnology, microfluidics, and nanotechnologies have been made in recent years, this astonishing recognition system can hardly be replaced by any artificial sensors designed so far. Here, taste organoids are coupled with an extracellular potential sensor array to form a novel bioelectronic organoid and developed a taste organoids‐on‐a‐chip system (TOS) for highly mimicking the biological sense of taste ex vivo with high stability and repeatability. The taste organoids maintain key taste receptors expression after the third passage and high cell viability during 7 days of on‐chip culture. Most importantly, the TOS not only distinguishs sour, sweet, bitter, and salt stimuli with great specificity, but also recognizes varying concentrations of the stimuli through an analytical method based on the extraction of signal features and principal component analysis. It is hoped that this bioelectronic tongue can facilitate studies in food quality controls, disease modelling, and drug screening.

Free-text data with long duration and continuity have great potential for studying environmental concerns and emotional expressions in child development. Based on ecosystem theory, using topic modeling and sentiment analysis in text mining to mine 4556 free-text writing data from first to sixth grade in elementary school, this study aims to reveal concerned topics’ evolutionary trends and sentiment expression differences in topics during elementary school children’s development. The results show the following: (1) Children prefer to focus on the topics of school and family in elementary school; (2) With the growth of grades, the proportion of family topics continues to decline, while that of social culture topics keeps rising; (3) When describing school, family, social culture, and interest, children mostly express negative emotions, and when describing peers and ability they mostly express positive emotions; (4) As the grade increases, the emotional expression on social culture topics become negative, while that on ability and interest topics become positive, and there are more differences in emotion expression between topics in junior and senior elementary grades. Discussion and conclusion are discussed at the end.

Summary: Background: Tongue images (the colour, size and shape of the tongue and the colour, thickness and moisture content of the tongue coating), reflecting the health state of the whole body according to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), have been widely used in China for thousands of years. Herein, we investigated the value of tongue images and the tongue coating microbiome in the diagnosis of gastric cancer (GC). Methods: From May 2020 to January 2021, we simultaneously collected tongue images and tongue coating samples from 328 patients with GC (all newly diagnosed with GC) and 304 non-gastric cancer (NGC) participants in China, and 16 S rDNA was used to characterize the microbiome of the tongue coating samples. Then, artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning models were established to evaluate the value of tongue images and the tongue coating microbiome in the diagnosis of GC. Considering that tongue imaging is more convenient and economical as a diagnostic tool, we further conducted a prospective multicentre clinical study from May 2020 to March 2022 in China and recruited 937 patients with GC and 1911 participants with NGC from 10 centres across China to further evaluate the role of tongue images in the diagnosis of GC. Moreover, we verified this approach in another independent external validation cohort that included 294 patients with GC and 521 participants with NGC from 7 centres. This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01090362. Findings: For the first time, we found that both tongue images and the tongue coating microbiome can be used as tools for the diagnosis of GC, and the area under the curve (AUC) value of the tongue image-based diagnostic model was 0.89. The AUC values of the tongue coating microbiome-based model reached 0.94 using genus data and 0.95 using species data. The results of the prospective multicentre clinical study showed that the AUC values of the three tongue image-based models for GCs reached 0.88–0.92 in the internal verification and 0.83–0.88 in the independent external verification, which were significantly superior to the combination of eight blood biomarkers. Interpretation: Our results suggest that tongue images can be used as a stable method for GC diagnosis and are significantly superior to conventional blood biomarkers. The three kinds of tongue image-based AI deep learning diagnostic models that we developed can be used to adequately distinguish patients with GC from participants with NGC, even early GC and precancerous lesions, such as atrophic gastritis (AG). To study the impact of nitrogen application on the photosynthetic structure and photosystem activity of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) leaves during the recovery stage after heat stress, the OJIP curve and JIP parameters were determined through a control experiment in an artificial climate chamber. The tomato variety was “Jinfen No. 1”. Four day/night temperature levels (25 °C/15 °C as control CKT; 30 °C/20 °C, lightly high-temperature LHT; 35 °C/25 °C, moderate high-temperature MHT; 40 °C/30 °C, severe high-temperature SHT) were set for a duration of 7 days. Five nitrogen supply levels (N1–N5: 0, 1.3, 1.95, 2.6 and 3.75 g/plant, respectively; 2.6 g/plant is the recommended nitrogen application rate, CKTN4) were applied. The results showed that the O, K, J, I and P phases on the chlorophyll a fluorescence curve were significantly affected by different nitrogen treatments in heat stress recovery. Compared with CKT, with the increase in nitrogen supply, the fluorescence intensity of SHTN2-SHTN5 treatment increased significantly at P, I and J phases, while that of MHTN1-MHTN4 treatment decreased. The fluorescence intensity of SHTN5 and SHTN3 increased by 13.27% and 10.10% in the P phase, 13.52% and 12.1% in the I phase and 20.16% and 26.18% in the J phase, respectively. There were highly significant differences (p < 0.01) in the impact of high temperatures and nitrogen levels on the fluorescence parameters. On the 1st day after short-term heat stress, N had no significant effect on Fv/FM, Fv, Fo and FM; however, their interaction was significant (p < 0.05). On the 8th day, there were no significant interaction effects between HT and N for Fv/Fo, ABS/RC and DIo/RC. Fv/Fo proved to be sensitive to the application of both high temperatures and nitrogen. Under all five nitrogen applications, temperature played a significant role in increasing DIo/RC, especially for N2 and N3. The results indicated that decreasing the nitrogen application under SHT resulted in a higher number of active RCs and an increased value of specific energy flux (ABS/RC, TRo/RC and DIo/RC), indicating the enhanced ability of RC to reduce plastoquinone. The study provides a reference for the diagnosis of nitrogen nutrition under high-temperature stress using chlorophyll fluorescence methods.

Anthracite-associated graphite is an important graphite resource with a wide range of applications besides being used as a fuel. This paper introduces a method for evaluating the graphite equivalent evaluation of anthracite-associated graphite. A series of graphite-anthracite standard samples with known graphite content were prepared, and their Raman spectra were obtained using a Raman spectrometer. By employing peak-fitting analysis to decipher the peak spectrum information of the D peak and G peak, trends in the peak position, peak intensity ratio, half-width, and peak area of the D peak and G peak in standard samples with different graphite contents were obtained. Subsequently, a standard curve and fitting equation were established using the peak area data. The goodness of fit for the equation (R2) was 0.9984. Then the equation was used to evaluate 100 natural anthracite-associated graphite samples with unknown graphite content, obtaining a corresponding graphite equivalent evaluation.

Enhancing public awareness for epidemic prevention is crucial for safeguarding public health. This experimental study investigated the effectiveness of a combined approach involving three persuasive elements in public health advertising. Specifically, the study examined the interplay between emotional appeals (fear messages versus efficacy messages) and spokesperson type on the public’s response to health announcements. The results demonstrated that fear messages were more persuasive when conveyed by real human spokespersons (versus animated spokespersons), whereas efficacy messages were more acceptable when conveyed by animated spokespersons (versus real humans). Furthermore, the study revealed that the impact of emotional appeals and spokesperson type is moderated by benefit appeals (self-benefit or other-benefit). The joint effects of these persuasive variables on individuals’ intention to adopt preventive measures indicated that the interactions significantly differed across the two types of benefit appeal. Taken together, the findings represent a pioneering contribution to the field of health communication by comparing the persuasive effects of different combinations of emotional appeals, spokesperson types, and benefit appeals on public behavior. These findings offer practical guidance for public communicators to design more appropriate health advertisements based on the results of this study, thereby enhancing public acceptance of disease prevention measures.

Controllable bonded prestress represents an innovative advancement stemming from retard-bonded prestress systems, distinguished by its intrinsic controllability in bonding. The controllable bonded binder can be artificially heated and cured rapidly through DC heating after the completion of prestressed tension, allowing for enhanced control over the process. FLUENT simulates controllable bonded prestressed structure’s temperature field, yielding a 1.73% max error validated against measured data. Based on the theory of heat transfer, the maximum error of the calculated temperature field of the controllable bonded test beam under DC heating using the Stehfest numerical algorithm is 1.28%, which exhibits a strong alignment with both simulated and measured results. The parameter analysis identifies current, binder thickness, and steel-strand diameter as key temperature distribution influencers. The relationship between the current and heating time follows a quadratic inverse pattern. Increasing the heating current can significantly reduce the duration of heating. Under identical heating conditions, the temperature of the controllable binder is directly proportional to its thickness. A higher thickness results in a higher temperature. Additionally, larger diameters of steel-stranded wire lead to a lower heating efficiency.

With the rapid development of Internet technology, the number of global Internet users is rapidly increasing, and the scale of the Internet is also expanding. The huge Internet system has accelerated the spread of bad information, including bad images. Bad images reflect the vulgar culture of the Internet. They will not only pollute the Internet environment and impact the core culture of society but also endanger the physical and mental health of young people. In addition, some criminals use bad images to induce users to download software containing computer viruses, which also greatly endanger the security of cyberspace. Cyberspace governance faces enormous challenges. Most existing methods for classifying bad images face problems such as low classification accuracy and long inference times, and these limitations are not conducive to effectively curbing the spread of bad images and reducing their harm. To address this issue, this paper proposes a classification method (RepVGG-SimAM) based on RepVGG and a simple parameter-free attention mechanism (SimAM). This method uses RepVGG as the backbone network and embeds the SimAM attention mechanism in the network so that the neural network can obtain more effective information and suppress useless information. We used pornographic images publicly disclosed by data scientist Alexander Kim and violent images collected from the internet to construct the dataset for our experiment. The experimental results prove that the classification accuracy of the method proposed in this paper can reach 94.5% for bad images, that the false positive rate of bad images is only 4.3%, and that the inference speed is doubled compared with the ResNet101 network. Our proposed method can effectively identify bad images and provide efficient and powerful support for cyberspace governance.

To investigate the effects of low-temperature (LT) stress on photosynthetic properties and senescence characteristics of winter wheat leaves during the jointing stage, an environmental temperature control experiment was designed at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology in 2023, using Triticum aestivum L. cv. “Ji Mai 22” as the test material. Four different temperature levels were set: 18 °C/8 °C (daily maximum/daily minimum temperature; CK), 13 °C/3 °C, 10 °C/0 °C, and 7 °C/3 °C. The duration of each treatment was 2, 4, and 6 days, respectively. The experimental findings reveal that the changes in physiological parameters of winter wheat leaves under low-temperature stress treatments are nonlinear. Under the 3 °C LT treatment, the photosynthetic parameters and endogenous hormone levels of wheat leaves significantly decrease after 6 days of stress. Under the 0 °C LT treatment, the photosynthetic parameters, leaf pigment content, and endogenous hormones of wheat decrease significantly, while under the −3 °C LT treatment, all the parameters of winter wheat leaves show a significant decline. Generally, the “Ji Mai22” wheat cultivar has a lower growth temperature limit of −3 °C during the jointing stage.

Jatropha curcas is widely planted as a highly drought-resistant biodiesel feedstock. Curcin protein is one of the Jatropha ribosomal inactivation proteins with broad-spectrum antifungal activity that may enter the soil ecosystem as a result of large-scale Jatropha cultivation and affect fungi and various enzymatic activities in the soil. In this research, the influence of curcin protein and Jatropha planting on soil fungi was investigated, and the levels of curcin in various tissues and organs of Jatropha were measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. It was found that the content of curcin in seed kernels reaches 2 mg/g, which is much higher than that in other tissues. After the seeds have fallen into the soil, the level of curcin in the soil rises rapidly, reaching 59.22 µg/g soil and 67.49 µg/g soil in different soil samples, respectively. It then falls by more than 99% within six days. High-throughput sequencing technology was used to study the soils treated with different concentrations of curcin, and the results of the soil fungal alpha diversity index analysis showed that the fungal communities did not change significantly, but the abundance of each fungal community changed significantly. The degree of influence of different concentrations of curcin treatment on the abundance of the soil dominant fungal community were investigated for concentrations of 0.5 μg/g, 50 μg/g and 5 μg/g, and showed that concentrations of 0.5 μg/g and 50 μg/g are more likely to change fungal community structure in soil, and with the increasing extension of the treatment time, they may be detrimental to the conservation of soil ecosystems. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing of soil fungi from Jatropha planted and unplanted areas in four regions with different climate types showed that Jatropha planting significantly altered the soil fungal communities in each region. There was a negative impact on soil fungal communities in tropical maritime monsoon and subtropical dry and hot monsoon climates, while a positive impact was observed in subtropical monsoon and tropical highland monsoon climates due to Jatropha cultivation. In conclusion, Jatropha plantations and curcin protein have an impact on soil fungi and thereby affect the ecological system of the soil.

Drought is the main meteorological disaster that affects the yield and quality of spring maize on the Loess Plateau. This study used data of the spring maize growth period, relative soil humidity, and yield at 18 agricultural meteorological observation stations on the Loess Plateau from 1997 to 2013 to determine the drought category based on the yield reduction rate. Through the drought index according to the conformity rate of category standard and individual case verification, a refined suitability drought index of spring maize on the Loess Plateau was constructed, and the spatial distribution characteristics of drought in different growth stages of spring maize were analyzed. The results showed the following: (1) The number of days in the whole growth period of spring maize in all regions of the Loess Plateau has been extended. The average sowing date of spring maize in the northwest region of the Loess Plateau was 9 April, and that in the east and central regions was 26 April. In terms of spatial distribution, each growth period was gradually delayed from west to east. (2) The correlation between relative soil humidity and yield of spring maize at the jointing stage and heading stage was the best, followed by the milky stage and mature stage, and the relative soil humidity at the sowing stage and emergence stage had little effect on the yield. (3) According to the national drought category standard “Drought Category of Spring Maize in the North”, based on the data of yield reduction rate, the drought index of spring maize on the Loess Plateau was refined by region and growth stage. The drought category index values of spring maize in different growth stages and regions changed according to the revised drought category standard, with 71.4% of the sites in the sowing seedling stage and 85.7% of the sites in the seedling jointing stage, and the revised drought category was more severe than the national drought category standard, while at 57.1% of the sites in the jointing and tasseling stages and 71.4% in the tasseling and milking stages, the revised drought category was less severe than the national drought category standard. (4) Based on the revised refined drought index for spring maize on the Loess Plateau, the spatial distribution of drought occurrence frequency across different growth stages of spring maize on the Loess Plateau was analyzed. The frequency of drought occurrence during the seeding and emergence stages was 25–75%. With the change in growth stages, the high-value area of drought occurrence frequency gradually moved northward, and the overall frequency of drought occurrence decreased. For the milky mature stage, the frequency of drought occurrence in a few regions was around 42%, and the drought frequency in most regions was between 8% and 33%.

Controlling NOx and CO2 emissions from heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) is receiving increasing attention. Accurate measurement of HDDV NOx and CO2 emissions is the prerequisite for HDDV emission control. Vehicle emission regulations srecommend the measurement of NOx and CO2 emissions from vehicles using an emission analyzer, which is expensive and unsuitable to measure a large number of vehicles in a short time. The on-board diagnostics (OBD) data stream of HDDVs provides great convenience for calculating vehicle NOx and CO2 emissions by providing the engine fuel flow rate, NOx sensor output, and air mass flow. The calculated vehicle NOx and CO2 emissions based on the OBD data were validated by testing a heavy-duty truck’s emissions on the chassis dynamometer over the CHTC-HT driving cycle, showing that the calculated NOx and CO2 emissions based on the OBD data are consistent with the measured results by the emission analyzer. The calculated vehicle fuel consumptions based on the OBD data were close to the calculated results based on the carbon balance method and the measured results by the fuel flowmeter. The experimental results show that accessing vehicle NOx and CO2 emissions based on the OBD data is a convenient and applicable method.

Abstract Ground blast loads are of great importance to the safe operation of steel and gas pipelines, and the results obtained from traditional theoretical formulas for pipeline safety prediction are in error with the actual measured data. In this paper, full-size field tests and corresponding numerical simulations are carried out using Timoshenko beam theory and explosion stress wave theory, which consider shear effects. At the same time, combined with the theory of foundation stiffness and pipeline stiffness flexibility ratio, a modified theoretical model is obtained in line with the actual conditions of the site, which can accurately calculate the deformation and displacement of pipeline underground explosion load, and greatly reduce the error of theoretical prediction results. The innovation of the research results in this paper is that the theoretical stress in the Timoshenko beam can be replaced by the circumferential strain. On the other hand, the modified theoretical solution can obtain the critical weight of explosives to prevent pipeline damage at different buried depths. It provides a theoretical basis for the protection of pipelines’ underground blast loads and provides research ideas for the safe protection and design of pipelines.

Abstract Background Xerostomia and changes in saliva characteristics are common side-effects in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiotherapy, which negatively impact their oral health. However, there are no consensus standards for intervention to manage these problems. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an integrated supportive program on xerostomia and saliva characteristics at a 1-year follow-up of patients with HNC radiated with a low dose to the major salivary glands. Methods The CONSORT guidelines for a randomized controlled trial were used. Participants with a low overall dose to major salivary glands were randomly allocated to an intervention group (n = 47) or a control group (n = 45). The intervention group received usual care and an integrated supportive program, which included three steps: face-to-face education; face-to-face coaching at 1 month post-radiotherapy; and four telephone coaching sessions at 2, 3, 6, and 9 months post-radiotherapy. The face-to-face education consisted of oral hygiene instruction, oral self-care strategies, facial and tongue muscle exercises, and salivary gland massage. Adherence to the intervention was evaluated using a questionnaire completed during the 9 months follow-up. The control group received usual care. The unstimulated saliva flow rate and xerostomia were assessed in both groups. Results A total of 79 participants (40 in the intervention group and 39 in the control group) completed the 12 months follow-up. The intervention group achieved significantly greater relief from xerostomia than the control group after 3 months (intervention group: 35.1 ± 5.9 versus control group: 38.0 ± 5.9, P = 0.027) and 12 months follow-up (intervention group: 18.5 ± 4.1 versus control group: 22.8 ± 4.3, P

Abstract With a large population of people vaccinated, it is possible that at-risk people are shielded, and the coronavirus disease is contained. Given the low vaccine uptakes, achieving herd immunity via vaccination campaigns can be challenging. After a literature review, we found a paucity of research studies of vaccine hesitancy from social media settings. This study aims to categorise and create a typology of social media contents and assess the priority of concerns for future public health messaging. With a dataset of 43,203 YouTube comments, we applied text analytics and multiple regression analyses to examine the correlations between vaccine hesitancy factors and vaccination intention. Our major findings are (i) Polarized views on vaccines existed in the social media ecology of public discourse, with a majority of people unwilling to get vaccinated against COVID-19; (ii) Reasons behind vaccine hesitancy included concerns about vaccine safety, potential side-effects, lack of trust in government and pharmaceutical companies; (iii) Political partisan-preferences were exemplified in vaccine decision-making processes; (iv) Anti-vaccine movements with amplified misinformation fuelled vaccine hesitancy and undermined public confidence in COVID-19 vaccines. We suggest public health practitioners engage in social media and craft evidenced-based messages to online communities in a balanced and palatable way.

Abstract Background Perioperative coronary artery spasm (CAS) following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a severe or lethal condition that is rarely reported. In addition, rare cases with CAS following CABG in the non-manipulated coronary artery are angiographically documented in the perioperative period. We aimed to report our experiences on the diagnosis and treatment of a case with CAS following off-pump CABG in the non-manipulated coronary artery. Methods A 57-year old male with coronary heart disease and unstable angina willing to undergo CABG was admitted to our department. CABG was recommended as he showed 90% stenosis in distal left anterior descending artery, 90% stenosis in intermediate branch, 90% stenosis in left circumflex coronary artery, as well as 50% stenosis in proximal right coronary artery (RCA). Results After CABG, the patient showed Adams–Stokes syndrome and ST-segment elevation. Then CPR was conducted and coronary angiography indicated perioperative CAS in the non-manipulated posterior descending artery. For the treatment, the patient received nitroglycerin injection into the coronary artery by catheter and pumping of diltiazem. Finally, the patient was discharged on day 7 after surgery. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to summarize the studies focused on the diagnosis and treatment of such condition, which indicated that all of the CAS cases occurred in the manipulated vessels, except one study showing CAS in the untouched native coronary artery which was similar with our case. Conclusions Perioperative CAS in the non-manipulated coronary artery following CABG is a severe or lethal condition that is rarely reported, which deserves close attention by the clinicians in clinical practice.

Abstract Objectives To investigate whether social trust is associated with more stress symptoms among middle-aged and older adults in six East and Southeast Asia regions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This multi-region study used cross-sectional survey data collected in May 2020. Participants were a probability-based internet sample of adults aged 55 or older. Results Government trust was negatively associated with stress in Singapore and South Korea. Higher levels of health care trust were significantly associated with less stress in Singapore and Taiwan. Trust in neighbors was associated with a higher likelihood of stress in Hong Kong and a lower likelihood in Singapore. Social trust was not associated with stress in Japan or Thailand. Discussion Findings suggest the level of social trust in relation to stress substantially varied by region. Interventions to strengthen trust during COVID-19 and other major health crises need to be tailored to fit regions’ unique circumstances.

Tumor DNA vaccine as an effective therapeutic approach can induce systemic immunity against malignant tumors, but its therapeutic effect is still not satisfactory in advanced renal cancer. Herein, a novel DNA vaccine containing dual antigens of fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGL1) and carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) was developed and intramuscularly delivered by PLGA/PEI nanoparticles for renal cancer therapy. Compared with PLGA/PEI-pCAIX immunization, PLGA/PEI-pFGL1/pCAIX co-immunization significantly inhibited the subcutaneous tumor growth and promoted the differentiation and maturation of CD11c+ DCs and CD11c+CD11b+ DCs subset. Likewise, the increased capabilities of CD8 T cell proliferation, CTL responses, and multi-functional CD8+ T cell immune responses were observed in PLGA/PEI-pFGL1/pCAIX vaccine group. Interestingly, depletion of CD8+ T cells by using CD8 mAb resulted in a loss of anti-tumor function of PLGA/PEI-pFGL1/pCAIX vaccine, suggesting that the anti-tumor activity of the vaccine was dependent on CD8+ T cell immune responses. Furthermore, PLGA/PEI-pFGL1/pCAIX co-immunization also suppressed the lung metastasis of tumor mice by enhancing the multi-functional CD8+ T cell responses. Therefore, these results indicate that PLGA/PEI-pFGL1/pCAIX vaccine could provide an effective protective effect for renal cancer by enhanced DC-mediated multi-functional CD8+ T cell immune responses. This vaccine strategy offers a potential approach for solid or metastatic tumor treatment.

Amber suppression has been widely used to incorporate unnatural amino acids (UNAAs) with unique structures or functional side-chain groups into specific sites of the target protein, which expands the scope of protein-coding chemistry. However, this traditional strategy does not allow multiple-site incorporation of different UNAAs into a single protein, which limits the development of unnatural proteins. To address this challenge, the suppression method using multiple termination codons (TAG, TAA or TGA) was proposed, and cell-free unnatural protein synthesis (CFUPS) system was employed. By the analysis of incorporating 3 different UNAAs (p-propargyloxy-l-phenylalanine, p-azyl-phenylalanine and L-4-Iodophenylalanine) and mass spectrometry, the simultaneous usage of the codons TAG and TAA were suggested for better multiple-site UNAA incorporation. The CFUPS conditions were further optimized for better UNAA incorporation efficiency, including the orthogonal translation system (OTS) components, magnesium ions, and the redox environment. This study established a CFUPS approach based on multiple termination codon suppression to achieve efficient and precise incorporation of different types of UNAAs, thereby synthesizing unnatural proteins with novel physicochemical functions.

AIM: To explore the effect of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) on recruitment and chemotaxis function of neutrophils in Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) keratitis. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice models of A. fumigatus keratitis were established by inoculating hyphae of A. fumigatus evenly on the corneas. The clinical scores and inflammatory cytokines expression were measured respectively on the 1st, 3rd, 5th day after infection. The 1-MT (1 mg/mL) was administered by gavage to exert an inhibitory effect on IDO during infection. The mice were divided into control group, 1-MT group, A. fumigatus (A.F.) group, and 1-MT+A.F. groups. The corneas were monitored by slit lamp microscopy, and recorded disease scores in 3d after infection. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) assay was done to evaluate the neutrophils infiltration. Immunofluorescence staining was used to detect the recruitment of neutrophils in murine corneas. The mRNA of inflammatory cytokines was measured with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS: The corneal inflammation and the clinical score reached the peak on the 3rd day after the corneal infection. The mRNA of inflammatory cytokines of the A.F. group reached the highest on the 3rd day after the infection accordingly. Meanwhile, the results of slit light photography indicated that inhibitors of IDO made inflammation more serious contrasted with the A.F. group on the 3rd day. Besides, imunofluorescence staining and MPO indicated that 1-MT enhanced the recruitment, infiltration and chemotaxis of neutrophils obviously in contrast to the A.F. group. RT-PCR indicated that 1-MT increased the expression of CXCL-1, ICAM-1, IL-1β, and IL-8 significantly. CONCLUSION: IDO participates in the pathogenesis of A. fumigatus keratitis and plays an important role in inducing immune protection by inhibiting neutrophils-related inflammatory reaction and suppressing recruitment and chemotaxis of the neutrophils.

ABSTRACT: To regulate cell behaviors and promote nerve function recovery, three-dimensional (3D) conductive hydrogel can transmit intercellular electrical signals, and effectively provide the cell survival environment. However, producing hydrogels with simultaneous high conductivity, favorable biocompatibility, and tissue-matching properties remains a challenge for spinal cord injury (SCI) treatment. Here, a conductive, multifunctional, and biocompatible VPImBF4 ionic liquid (IL) with photosensitive chitosan-based hydrogel (pCM@IL) is developed. The pCM@IL hydrogel exhibits a 3D microporous structure that could maintain cell viability and improve cell growth. Elastic modulus, conductivity, and biodegradability of the pCM@IL hydrogels are investigated with tissue-matching mechanical properties. The pCM@IL conductive hydrogels synergistically enhance neuronal cell proliferation and promote neuronal cells differentiation via upregulates synapse gene (Tubulin β3, GAP43, Synaptophysin) expression. Furthermore, in vivo studies of the pCM@IL conductive hydrogels as implants demonstrate low-inflammation and neovascularize promotion and appropriate biodegradable properties. The developed pCM@IL conductive hydrogel is a promising therapeutic scaffold biomaterial for SCI repair.

Zinc–air battery (ZAB) has considerable potential to be applied in the energy storage field. The main commercial electrocatalysts are Pt/C and RuO2, which are expensive and cannot possess good bifunctional electrocatalytic activities including oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, the rare‐earth metal lanthanum is first constructed to be a Mott–Schottky heterojunction, and the S vacancy is introduced into the Mott–Schottky heterojunction. The so‐obtained La/La2O2S1−x shows excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity with ΔE of 0.68 V, which is superior to La/La2O2S without S vacancies and the commercial Pt/C + RuO2 system. In addition, the La/La2O2S1−x is assembled into ZABs, showing a high open power density of 212 mW cm−2, and a large specific capacity of 707 mAh g−1, as good cycle stability. The density functional theory calculations reveal the tailoring effect of S vacancy on the Schottky barrier to control the electron transfer concentration and ameliorate over‐strong adsorption, which blocks the reflux of electrons and promotes the unidirectional flow of electrons. In addition, the S vacancy modulates the electron cloud of La‐4f orbit and makes the electrocatalytic pathway closer to the ideal pathway.

Food-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs) can relatively easily be synthesized and chemically manipulated for a broad spectrum of biomedical applications. However, their toxicity may hinder their actual use. Here, Spinacia oleracea-derived CQDs i.e., CQD-1 and CQD-2, were synthesized by means of different shredding methods and followed by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. Subsequently, these CQDs were analyzed in vitro and in an in vivo mice model to test their biocompatibility and potential use as bioimaging agents and for activation of osteogenic differentiation.When comparing CQD-1 and CQD-2, it was found that CQD-1 exhibited 7.6 times higher photoluminescent (PL) emission intensity around 411 nm compared to CQD-2. Besides, it was found that the size distribution of CQD-1 was 2.05 ± 0.08 nm, compared with 2.14 ± 0.04 nm for CQD-2. Upon exposure to human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) in vitro, CQD-1 was endocytosed into the cytoplasm and significantly increased the differentiation of hBMSCs up to 10 μg mL−1 after 7 and 14 days. Apparently, the presence of relatively low doses of CQD-1 showed virtually no toxic or histological effects in the major organs in vivo. In contrast, high doses of CQD-1 (1 mg mL-1) caused cell death in vitro ranging from 35% on day 1 to 80% on day 3 post-exposure, and activated the apoptotic machinery and increased lymphocyte aggregates in the liver tissue. In conclusion, S. oleracea-derived CQDs have the potential for biomedical applications in bioimaging and activation of stem cells osteogenic differentiation. Therefore, it is postulated that CQD-1 from S. oleracea remains potential prospective material at appropriate doses and specifications.

IntroductionRecessive mutations in the gene encoding the histidine triad nucleotide-binding protein 1 (HINT1) are associated with axonal motor-predominant Charcot–Marie–Tooth (CMT) disease with neuromyotonia. A total of 24 HINT1 gene mutations have been reported so far. Some of these cases had mild to moderate elevations of creatinine kinase with no earlier reports of muscle biopsy findings in these cases. In this study, we describe a patient with axonal motor-predominant neuropathy and myopathy with rimmed vacuoles, likely due to a novel HINT1 gene mutation.Case reportA 35-year-old African American man presented with insidious onset and progressive symmetric distal leg weakness followed by hand muscle atrophy and weakness since the age of 25. He had no muscle cramps or sensory complaints. His 38-year-old brother developed similar symptoms beginning in his early 30 s. On neurologic examination, the patient had distal weakness and atrophy in all limbs, claw hands, pes cavus, absent Achilles reflexes, and normal sensory examination. Electrodiagnostic studies revealed absent/reduced compound motor action potential amplitudes distally with normal sensory responses with no neuromyotonia. His sural nerve biopsy showed a chronic non-specific axonal neuropathy, and a biopsy of the tibialis anterior muscle demonstrated myopathic features and several muscle fibers harboring rimmed vacuoles without inflammation in addition to chronic denervation changes. A homozygous variant, p.I63N (c.188T > A), in the HINT1 gene was found in both brothers.ConclusionWe describe a novel, likely pathogenic, HINT1 pI63N (c.188T > A) homozygous variant associated with hereditary axonal motor-predominant neuropathy without neuromyotonia in two African American brothers. The presence of rimmed vacuoles on muscle biopsy raises the possibility that mutations in the HINT1 gene may also cause myopathy.
