Abstract

Cross section, tensor analyzing power T20, and vector polarization correlation coefficient Cy,y for the 3He(d,p)4He reaction have been measured at 0° and Ed=140, 200, and 270 MeV. The data are compared with a calculation based on an impulse approximation taking the D-state admixtures in deuteron, 3He, and 4He explicitly into account. The reasonable agreement with the data is understood as a consequence of a close connection between the 3He(d,p)4He reaction and the d+N backward scattering. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Educators have devoted little attention to formal evaluation of educational administrative personnel. The authors surveyed the educational administrators working in McMaster University's Department of Medicine residency program and found they felt they were receiving little useful feedback. The authors also surveyed the colleagues, residents, and administrative staff with whom the administrators worked and found they felt they had inadequate input into the administrators' evaluation. In response to these results, a measurement instrument was developed based on existing job descriptions and feedback was obtained on administrators' performance from relevant individuals. After three yearly evaluations, administrators and evaluators acknowledged much broader input into evaluation but saw little evaluation-related improvement in performance. Of the administrators, 85% felt the process should continue as did 91% of the evaluators. An evaluation process may not alter perceived performance when it is already good but there may be other benefits to rigorous evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The preliminary results on the tensor T20analyzing power for the 12C([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]C*reaction with the excitation of 13C levels and the [Formula: see text]d([Formula: see text] reaction at the energies Td= 140, 200 and 270?MeV at the emission angle ?cm=0?are presented. The data on the tensor Ayyand vector Ayanalyzing powers for the 12C[Formula: see text]([Formula: see text]C*reaction at the energy Td= 270?MeV in the angular range from 4?to 18?in the laboratory are also obtained.

Abstract

The data on the vector Ayand tensor Ayy, Axx, Axzanalyzing powers for the [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]H p reaction have been obtained at the energy of the initial deuteron of 200?MeV in the angular range of 0?95 degrees in the c.m.s. The calculations performed within one-nucleon exchange model with the use of the standard three-nucleon bound state wave functions fail to reproduce the data on the tensor analyzing powers.

Abstract

On August 7 (09h 12m, local time), 1977, a major eruption of dacite pumice occurred from the summit of Usu Volcano (42°32'N, 140°50'E), Hokkaido, Japan, after 32 years of dormancy since the birth of Showa-Shinzan lava dome. Four notable explosive eruptions, two moderate and ten small ones have been recorded until the midnight of August 13-14, and then marked crustal movements and local earthquake swarms continue still at present. The sequence of the present eruption, the distribution and nature of the new ejecta, and the topographic deformation of the volcano, are briefly given in this report.

213. The transcriptional co-activator P/CAF potentiates TGF-beta/Smad signaling.

Abstract

Smads perform pivotal functions in the intracellular signaling of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). TGF-beta-mediated activation of TGF-beta type I receptor stimulates the phosphorylation of Smad2 and Smad3 and subsequent heteromeric complex formation with Smad4. The heteromeric Smad complexes translocate into the nucleus where they, in co-operation with co-activators and co-repressors, regulate transcriptional responses. Here we investigated the possible co-activator function of P/CAF in TGF-beta/Smad signaling. P/CAF was found to interact directly with Smad3 in vitro. Moreover, Smad2 and Smad3 interacted with P/CAF upon TGF-beta type I receptor activation in cultured mammalian cells. The interaction involves the MH2 domain of Smad3 and the N-terminal region of P/CAF. P/CAF potentiated the transcriptional activity of heterologous Gal4-Smad2 and Gal4-Smad3 fusion proteins. In addition, P/CAF potentiated the TGF-beta/Smad3-induced transcriptional responses, which could be further enhanced by co-activators p300 and Smad4. P/CAF may, therefore, activate Smad-mediated transcriptional responses independently or in co-operation with p300/CBP. Our results indicate a direct physical and functional interplay between two negative regulators of cell proliferation, Smad3 and P/CAF.

Abstract

The data on the tensor analyzing power T20 in the dd→He3n and dd→H3p reactions obtained at 140–270 and 140–200 MeV of the deuteron kinetic energy, respectively, and at zero degree were measured at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The observed positive sign of T20 clearly demonstrates the sensitivity to the D/S wave ratios in the 3He and 3H in the energy domain of the measurements. The T20 data for the 3He–n and 3H–p channels are in agreement within experimental accuracy.

The high precision experimental data are compared with the theoretical calculation within the one nucleon exchange model by using standard He, H and deuteron wave functions. 217. Apoptotic cell death of renal tubules in experimental severe acute pancreatitis

Abstract

Background: Recently renal cell apoptosis has been reported in various disorders that result in renal failure. Thus we hypothesized that renal cell injury resulting from apoptosis is involved in renal failure with severe acute pancreatitis. Methods: Renal cell apoptosis in kidneys harvested from rats with necrotizing pancreatitis was evaluated by in situ nick-end labeling. Ascitic fluid that had been collected 6 hours after development of pancreatitis was injected into the peritoneal cavities of healthy rats, and renal apoptosis was also evaluated. The apoptosis-inducing activity of the ascitic fluid was estimated in vitro with use of isolated rat renal tubules and the normal rat kidney cell line NRK52E by nuclear staining, cell cycle analysis, and DNA electrophoresis. Results: Apoptosis was detected by in situ nick-end labeling on the renal tubules 6 hours after induction of pancreatitis in vivo. Similar tubular apoptosis was detected in the rats that had intraperitoneal injection of the ascitic fluid. In in vitro analyses the ascitic fluid induced nuclear and DNA fragmentation on the isolated renal tubules and promoted apoptosis on NRK52E cells in a time-dependent manner. Conclusions: Apoptotic cell death of renal tubules occurs in severe acute pancreatitis within several hours and is possibly involved in the mechanism of renal failure through undefined substance(s) in the ascitic fluid associated with pancreatitis. Abstract

The experiment with polarized deuteron beam was performed at energies 140, 200 and 270 MeV at RIKEN, Japan, in December 2000. The high-momentum structure of the 3He, 3H and deuteron was investigated. For this purpose the angular dependence of the tensor and vector analyzing powers were measured for the reactions d+d→3H+p and d+d→3He+n. Abstract

Field surveys were conducted along 140°E in the Southern Ocean north of Terre Adelie during three cruises: the KH cruise by RV Hakuho Maru, and TC1 and TC2 cruises by RV Tangaroa during the austral summers of 2002 and 2003. Macrozooplankton were sampled using a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT 8: mesh size: 4.5mm; effective mouth area: 8m2) along each transect. Macrozooplankton communities were separated by the Southern Boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (SB-ACC) based on cluster analysis. North of the SB-ACC, macrozooplankton assemblages comprised species of the northern oceanic community characterized by Salpa thompsoni, Euphausia frigida and Themisto gaudichaudii, while south of the SB-ACC, macrozooplankton assemblages were numerically dominated by Euphausia superba and/or Euphausia crystallorophias. It is suggested that the SB-ACC functions as the major biogeographic barrier to separate the macrozooplankton communities, and the contributions of macro- and meso-zooplankton to total zooplankton abundance varies seasonally as well as regionally in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean crossing the SB-ACC.

Abstract

Over 300 extrasolar planets (exoplanets) have been detected orbiting nearby stars. We now hope to conduct a census of all planets around nearby stars and to characterize their atmospheres and surfaces with spectroscopy. Rocky planets within their star's habitable zones have the highest priority, as these have the potential to harbor life. Our science goal is to find and characterize all nearby exoplanets; this requires that we measure the mass, orbit, and spectroscopic signature of each one at visible and infrared wavelengths. The techniques for doing this are at hand today. Within the decade we could answer long-standing questions about the evolution and nature of other planetary systems, and we could search for clues as to whether life exists elsewhere in our galactic neighborhood., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Astro2010 Decadal Review

Abstract

Hokkaido, Japan was attacked by earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 twice in January and July, 1993. One is the Kushiro-Oki Earthquake and the other the Hokkaido Nansei-Oki Earthquake. River dikes were severely damaged by liquefaction of sand. The former caused liquefaction of subsided dike materials and the latter caused liquefaction of sand of the foundation bed. Relations between dimensional elements of dike and peat bed and stress relaxation within dike were analyzed. Old channels recently filled with sandy materials were distinguished from pointbar zones in ancient river bed covered with silty sediment, based on degree of damage due to liquefaction. Repairing works were completed by the end of the year precedent the snow season.

Abstract

For the direct detection of extrasolar planets, a high contrast imaging optics system is required. One of the problems in it is speckle noise due to the wave-front error in the coronagraph optics. Abstract

We present our recent progress in development of two novel coronagraphs; an eightoctant phase-mask (8OPM) coronagraph and a tandem common-path achromatic interferocoronagraph (TCP-AIC). These methods have fourth-order responses to tip-tilt errors, and can realize deep stellar suppression for partially resolved stars.
