Sir Frank Francis was the most important figure in the history of the British Museum Department of Printed Books in the twentieth century. While he was one of the Keepers of the Department (1948–1959) he modernized many of the procedures which had remained virtually unchanged since the mid-nineteenth century. His greatest achievements were to devise a new method of producing very rapidly an updated version of the General Catalogue of Printed Books, and to initiate the process which led to the creation of the National Library of Science and Invention as part of the British Museum Library. During his time as Director of the Museum (1959–1968) there were many improvements to the buildings, and the British Museum Act of 1963 transformed the constitution of the Museum. He extended the opening hours of the reading rooms and began detailed planning of a new building for the library to the south of the Museum; this latter work was vitiated as a result of a volte-face by the Wilson Government in 1967. Objective. To determine cause and manner of death for consecutive infant deaths in the Aberdeen Area of the Indian Health Service (AAIHS) from 1998 to 2002 and to identify risk markers for infant mortality. Methods. Infant deaths in the AAIHS were identified from four data sources: death certificates from the four states in the AAIHS, deaths reported by local IHS Service Units, from obituaries in local and regional newspapers, and deaths reported by area hospitals. Each infant death is then sent to the local IHS service unit for review, where data from the infant and mother's chart is extracted and recorded. Local community factors, birth and death certificates, and autopsy reports are collected. The case is then reviewed at the Perinatal Infant Mortality Review (PIMR) meeting and a cause and manner of death is assigned. Summary data for the cohort was examined and then compared by mortality category and three age-at-death groups. Results. Sudden infant death syndrome accounted for 33% of all infant deaths in the AAIHS. Prematurity was the second most prevalent cause-specific mortality category, accounting for 22% of all infant deaths. The authors found that infant mortality was surprisingly recurrent, with 32% of mothers of this infant having had a previous infant death. Conclusions. The PIMR committee requires substantial resources to support a review committee with appropriate expertise and their travel. Participation of local IHS staff and tribal members provides an important cultural and community perspective for the review process. Quality improvement changes are currently being implemented. These include increasing data on substance use, mental health needs, and reviews of fetal deaths. The process of mortality review has been very helpful in public education in the AAIHS. This essay is written in memory of Rodney Hilton (1916–2002), who died on 7 June 2002. He was one of the towering historians of medieval England. Along with the Russian scholar, E. A. Kosminsky, of a previous generation of historians, he provided a formidable Marxist treatment of English feudalism, at once empirically rich, through extensive archival research, and theoretically informed. His work, while displaying a particular vision of the nature of feudal society, and embracing certain recurring themes, is broad in its scope and varied in the issues it covers. The essay is offered as a tribute to the particular tradition of Marxist historical scholarship represented by him, and which he did so much to foster. A brief account of his career and writing is given. This essay presents the author's emotions while writing obituaries of his fellow poets and writers. The author's poet friend Thom Gunn, died of a heart attack, and the author had to write about him in the "San Fransico Chronicle." The author had spent his days with Gunn in Los Angeles, California. Thom had then and for the rest of his career a very modest style of reading; he read with enough emotion to demonstrate his seriousness, but he never went over the top. He spoke little between poems—just enough to mark a pause between one poem and another.

Noel Baker was born on 10 August 1932 and died, of a heart attack, on 20 May 2001. He was the only child of a farming family living near the township of Virginia north of Adelaide in South Australia, and a fourth-generation Australian. From 1938 to 1944 he attended the local school, winning a scholarship to King's College, Adelaide, and from there another scholarship to Prince Alfred College, Adelaide. Here he was inspired by an enthusiastic mathematics teacher, Mr Williams, who expected pupils to practise mathematics assiduously, even on Saturday mornings. This article comments on an obituary for French philosopher Jacques Derrida published in the periodical "New York Times." This study examined various manifestations of the obituary announcement genre in Arabic to see what generic structures are common in a variety of death announcements, and what communicative functions are articulated by their generic components. Drawing on a corpus of 200 announcements randomly collected from two Jordanian daily newspapers, I identified two types of obituary announcements; one communicates a normal death, whereas the other celebrates an unusual death, termed a `martyr's wedding'. I identified nine recurrent components in the death announcements, reflecting the sociocultural norms, practices and beliefs that give rise to these two distinct, yet related, communicative events. Despite observed similarities in their generic components and their overall communicative purpose, the `martyr's wedding' notices were found to incorporate promotion of the deceased and communicate a feeling of pride and honor on the part of the announcer. I hope that the results of this study will be of help in further understanding sociocultutral factors that influence this communicative event and provide greater insight into the relationship between genres as social communicative events. The article presents information about publication of the periodical "Language." All in all, the past twelve months proved to be interesting and exciting in their own right, even without the sense of newness. As is the norm for "Language," four issues appeared, the last two issues of September and December, appearing on time, after some unfortunate but unavoidable events delayed the publication of the March and June issues. These four issues contained 869 pages, with 540 devoted to 16 articles, 17 to 1 review article, 40 to 4 discussion notes, 42 to 4 obituaries, 51 to 18 book reviews, 123 to 163 book notices and 56 to other sorts of material. This compares favorably with the previous year overall, especially with regard to articles in both number and length-the average length of an article this past year was 33.75 pages, almost exactly the same as last year's length, 34 pages, but far greater than was the case in the 1960s and into the 1970s.

This article presents an illustration of the work of author Douglas Leigh who died just two weeks short of the centuries end. When the author read his obituary in the "New York Times," he considered Leigh as a figure worth considering in light of several arguments the essay will pursue. On the event of his death the "Times" remembered him as "the dazzling impresario of electrical splendor" who helped turn Broadway in the "Great White Way." Among his signature productions was the Camel billboard that blew giant smoke rings over the heads of pedestrians and passer-bys, many of whom were no doubt left gawking at the spectacle of it all. In "A Small Boy and Others," published in 1913 and the first installment of the extended autobiographical project left unfinished upon his death in 1916. The author focuses on the book because it provided a compelling account of New York in the 1850s. All .protestations of his "alien" status in the "The American Scene" notwithstanding, what one sees in "A Small Boy and Others," is a version of Henry James who appeared extraordinarily at home in a New York thick with all manner of visual pleasure, which he apprehended with an altogether typical and involved intensity.

Presents literary criticism which focuses on Eudora Welty, a Southern writer. The particular words used "Grand Lady," "Southern" and "Universal" point to a complex operation of codification in which the complexity of an author's life and work are simplified into keywords that point obliquely to the person who is absent. The obituary proves a useful form for examining the larger public's view of an author because it is in the public space of newspapers instead of specialized literary journals available to laymen only in libraries. Obituaries also do the work of codification in that in the short space of a column or two they attempt to provide a complete picture of a person and his or her work. Because the obituaries are all written and published within a couple of days, they provide a snapshot of the status of the author in the popular imagination.

Paying homage to a great sociologist comes in many forms, that of disciple on the one hand and critic on the other. Disciples carry and propagate the faith, transmitting it to new generations. By contrast, the critic brings assessment and evaluation, identifying those rough edges and slippery slopes where the disciple fears to thread. This article devoted to the recognition of the importance of Pierre Bourdieu assiduously avoids both extremes: devotion to or profanation of a "sacred" work. Rather, it charts a course that will undoubtedly frustrate disciples and polemical critics alike. It offers ample testimony to the importance of how Bourdieu's work has inspired further sociological research; yet, it advances some criticism that suggest gaps in or ways to elaborate portions of Bourdieu's work in different areas.

This section introduces the articles featured in the April 2003 issue of Social Studies of Science. In order to remember the late David Edge and to celebrate his contributions to the journal and the field of social science, the editors of the journal have put together two collections of material. The first is a section of the April 2003 issue of the journal, and the second is a memorial website containing testimonies, pictures, and brief articles. The section of the issue dedicated to David's memory contains an obituary by David Bloor, tributes written by Sheila Jasanoff, Roy MacLeod, and Harry Collins, and a selection of brief testimonials to David by other colleagues and friends. The tributes represented in the issue are but a subset of the many moving commentaries about David that have circulated over the past few months. Many were projected on a screen at David's memorial service, and others were published in the March 2003 issue of the EASST Review. The special memorial section of the issue also contains an essay by David Edge himself. It is a draft of the talk David gave at the presidential plenary session of the 2002 4S meetings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. David's address puts on display many of the qualities that his colleagues mention in their tributes to him: his sense of humor, his irreverence for academic convention, his strong religious sensitivity, his love for poetry and music, and his deep humanity.

Eve Sedgwick's essay "White glasses' started out, she says, as an intended obituary for her friend Michael Lynch, who was dying of AIDS. But in the course of writing the obituary Lynch (temporarily) recovers, and Sedgwick discovers that she has breast cancer. Though the obituary is a text of mourning, melancholia is the operative psychoanalytic mechanism at work in this essay. Melancholia, far more than the mechanisms of mourning, suggests a resistance to separation, a self- consciousness about the formulation of the text, that is, about writing, and also an investment in art and writing as a mechanism that might prevent or protect against loss. Through the melancholic gestures of introjection, and also, this essay argues, incorporation, she attempts to sustain the dying Lynch in her text and at the same time, talismanically, to sustain herself. Through an identification with Lynch as a gay man, by way of his white glasses, Sedgwick metonymically incorporates his HIV through the mirror illness of her own breast cancer. Finally, the essay argues that the white glasses, melancholically incorporated, function as a fetish meant to ward off death, at least in the text. Nathan Jacobson, who died on 5 December 1999, was an outstanding algebraist, whose work on almost all aspects of algebra was of fundamental importance, and whose writings will exercise a lasting influence. He had been an honorary member of the Society since 1972.Nathan Jacobson (later known as ‘Jake’ to his friends) was born in Warsaw (in what he describes as the ‘Jewish ghetto’) on 5 October 1910 (through an error some documents have the date 8 September); he was the second son of Charles Jacobson (as he would be known later) and his wife Pauline, née Rosenberg. His family emigrated to the USA during the First World War, first to Nashville, Tennessee, where his father owned a small grocery store, but they then settled in Birmingham, Alabama, where Nathan received most of his schooling. Later the family moved to Columbus, Mississippi, but the young Nathan entered the University of Alabama in 1926 and graduated in 1930. His initial aim was to follow an uncle and obtain a degree in law, but at the same time he took all the (not very numerous) mathematics courses, in which he did so well that he was offered a teaching assistantship in mathematics in his junior (3rd) year. This marked a turning point; he now decided to major in mathematics and pursue this study beyond College. During his final year at Alabama he applied for admission and financial aid to three top graduate schools in the country: Princeton, Harvard and Chicago. He was awarded a research assistantship at Princeton; after the first year he was appointed a part-time instructor for two years, and during his fourth year he was appointed a Procter Fellow. The stipend was enough to enable him to make a grand tour of Europe by car in 1935, in the company of two Princeton fellow-students at the time: H. F. Bohnenblust and Robert J. Walker.
