The ongoing deforestation process in Amazonia has led to intensified forest fires in the region, particularly in Brazil, after more than a decade of effective forest conservation policy. This study aims to investigate the recovery of two mature sub‐montane ombrophile Amazonian forests affected by fire in terms of energy, water and carbon fluxes utilizing remote sensing (MODIS) and climate reanalysis data (GLDAS). These two forest plots, mainly composed of Manilkaraspp. (Maçaranduba), Protiumspp. (Breu) (∼30 m), Bertholletia excelsa(Castanheira) and Dinizia excelsaDucke (Angelim‐Pedra) (∼50 m), occupy areas of 100.5 and 122.1 km2and were subject to fire on the same day, on September 12, 2010. The fire significantly increased land surface temperature (0.8°C) and air temperature (1.2°C) in the forests over a 3 years interval. However, the forests showed an ability to recover their original states in terms of coupling between the carbon and water cycles comparing the 3‐year periods before and after the fires. Results from a wavelet analysis showed an intensification in annual and seasonal fluctuations, and in some cases (e.g., daily net radiation and evapotrasnspiration) sub‐annual fluctuation. We interpreted these changes to be consistent with overall intensification of the coupling of energy balance components and drivers imposed by climate and solar cycle seasonality, as well as faster time scale changes, consistent with a shift toward greater forest openness and consequent reduction in the interception of incoming solar radiation by the canopy. Deforestation in the Amazon is leading to larger areas of the forest being burned recently. We wanted to know how this deforestation impacts other aspects of the environment. In particular, we looked at how the deforestation changed the amount of carbon dioxide and water that is being transferred between the surface and the atmosphere. To do this, we used satellite data that monitors the amount of vegetation on the surface of the Earth. By combining the satellite data with climate data, we show that fires caused warming in the areas for 3 years after the fire. The amount of carbon dioxide and water moving between the surface and the atmosphere returned to normal within the same time interval. We observed that the fire causes changes in the amount of sunlight that is captured by the forest, which can vary from days to months. These changes at different time‐scales play a key role on how quickly the forest will recover after the fire. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a work and stress overload to healthcare workers, increasing their vulnerability to mental health impairments. In response, the authors created the COMVC-19 program. The program offered preventive actions and mental health treatment for the 22,000 workers of The Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (HCFMUSP). This paper aims to describe its implementation and share what we have learned from this experience.

Panitumumab is a monoclonal antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor used in metastatic colorectal cancer; in addition to tumor cells, it acts on epidermal keratinocytes and on the external follicular sheath and presents skin toxicity in up to 90% of cases. A scanning electron microscope was used to examine the eyelashes and hair of a 65-year-old patient with eyelash trichomegaly, wavy hair, and paronychia undergoing treatment with panitumumab. Channels in the hair shafts were identified, which were more evident in the eyelashes. Similar to oral epidermal growth factor inhibitors (erlotinib and gefitinib), panitumumab triggers acquired pili canaliculi.

Phenotypic assay against Leishmania amazonensisin vitroand in vivoled to identification of an adamantyl-based phenyl sulfonyl acetamide (compound 1) as a promising antileishmanial agent. Compound 1 inhibited the growth of intracellular forms of L. amazonensis(50% inhibitory concentration [IC50] = 4 μM) and exhibited low toxicity to host cells, with a selectivity index (SI) of >125. However, in a cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) mouse model, compound 1 did not reduce lesions and parasite load when administered as monotherapy or when given simultaneously with a suboptimal dose of miltefosine.

ABSTRACTFive bis-arylimidamides were assayed as anti-Trypanosoma cruziagents by in vitro, in silico, and in vivoapproaches. None were considered to be pan-assay interference compounds. They had a favorable pharmacokinetic landscape and were active against trypomastigotes and intracellular forms, and in combination with benznidazole, they gave no interaction. The most selective agent (28SMB032) tested in vivoled to a 40% reduction in parasitemia (0.1 mg/kg of body weight/5 days intraperitoneally) but without mortality protection. In silicotarget fishing suggested DNA as the main target, but ultrastructural data did not match.

A 10-month-old male infant was admitted to the hospital because of failure to thrive, pallor, petechia, generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, macrocephaly, nystagmus, and mucopurulent rhinitis. Laboratory studies disclosed the following values: red blood cells, 1,860,000/cu mm; hemoglobin, 6.0 g/dL; hematocrit, 17%; platelets, 8,000/cu mm; white blood cells, 28,500/cu mm (76% lymphocytes); calcium, 4.0 mEq/L (normal, 4.5 to 5.5 mEq/L); phosphorus, 1.6 mg/dL (normal, 2.5 to 4.8 mg/dL); alkaline phosphatase, 173 IU (normal, 56 to 156 IU); and acid phosphatase, 7.1 Bessey-Lowry units (normal, 0.13 to 0.63 Bessey-Lowry units). Roentgenograms of the limbs were obtained (Figs 1 and 2). The parents were not blood-related. They and the patient's five older siblings were healthy and roentgenographic bone surveys showed no abnormalities in any of them. Severe upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding and bronchopneumonia developed in the infant. He died after a stormy hospital course.
