206. Human Ecology: A Means of Environmental and Demographic Analysis in Educational Research.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to provide an ecological-demographic analysis of a suburban elementary school attendance area by examining the sociocultural elements within the spatially delimited boundaries. The area, though beyond the limits of the incorporated city, was part of the urban school district which transcended the political boundaries of the city to include its non-incorporated suburban areas. The framework of the study was built upon the four fundamental elements of human ecology: population, technology, environment, and organization. Residents were surveyed to determine age, mobility, and career stability. Local business men, land developers, and county planning officers, were interviewed; land use patterns within the area were analyzed. The study established that there was no definable neighborhood: the attendance area was an artificial construct used to delimit the elementary school population. The research methodology provided information from which school administrators and district policy makers could estimate growth patterns, financial support for educational programs within the area, and the effect that these factors could have upon school programs. 207. Mapping: A Method for Organizing Data about Your School Attendance Area.

Abstract

This paper shows the school principal how to map his school district or attendance area to systematically organize and relate physical and cultural data into a comprehensive spatial pattern. Use of such maps is shown to make interactions of cultural and physical elements within the spatial pattern more easily seen and understood. Major sources of generally available information and some of the principal methods of observation which may be employed in constructing such maps are provided. A map of the attendance area of a suburban elementary school is developed in detail to demonstrate the specific procedure, and the completed map is discussed in terms of a projected future for the area under study. Maps are shown to provide such information as locations of community support for schools, neighborhood representation in school activities, socioeconomic background of pupils, parental aspirations, parental attitudes toward school, tax bases, attitudes toward school bond elections, and transient areas with high student turnover. Abstract

This book, intended for directors or managers of sport facilities, presents an overview of management techniques, strategies, and considerations. The first section, which focuses on planning for effective facility and equipment management, states that the foundation for such planning efforts is the manager's own personal philosophy, which in turn gives direction and consistency to operational efforts. Some of the topics addressed in this section include suggestions for identifying resources that can be used to assess the needs of a program, and how to emphasize important operational components of a facility management plan. Part 2 presents specific strategies for implementing and evaluating these plans. These strategies include guidelines, checklists, and forms that illustrate important components of an equipment management plan. The section also describes the importance of facility maintenance to the satisfaction and safety of users, provides operational guidance to the overall supervisor and coordinator of the multiple activities in the facility, considers the multiple aspects of facility scheduling, and outlines a comprehensive model for planning and conducting new facility construction. Three appendixes list addresses and phone numbers for resources that provide information regarding facility standards, equipment management, and planning and renovating facilities. (RJM)

232. Computers and Conceptual Change.

Abstract

A systematic study was conducted with a group of 10- to 12-year-olds using computer assisted instruction in a unit on fire which included a computer simulation of combustion. Three research questions were addressed to learn more about how the computer experience challenged the students' preconceptions: what the students thought the computer knew, what they knew about burning, and how they learned from the computer. Sixteen students were interviewed about the actual study of combusion (by putting candles in jars) and the simulation of this process on the computer, and their attitudes toward classroom experiments versus computer simulation were noted. The students' responses were analyzed to examine the interaction between real and simulated science experiments and ways in which each can be used to stimulate concept formation and conceptual development in science. Results indicate that teaching methods that rely solely on computer simulation may overlook the fact that students have preconceptions concerning science which must be addressed in order for learning to occur. It is concluded that, although simulations can contribute to conceptual change, they must be used in conjunction with traditional teaching methods. (DB)
