Catalytic conversion of CO2 to produce fuels and chemicals is attractive in prospect because it provides an alternative to fossil feedstocks and the benefit of converting and cycling the greenhouse gas CO2 on a large scale. In today's technology, CO2 is converted into hydrocarbon fuels in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis via the water gas shift reaction, but processes for direct conversion of CO2 to fuels and chemicals such as methane, methanol, and C2+ hydrocarbons or syngas are still far from large-scale applications because of processing challenges that may be best addressed by the discovery of improved catalysts—those with enhanced activity, selectivity, and stability. Core–shell structured catalysts are a relatively new class of nanomaterials that allow a controlled integration of the functions of complementary materials with optimised compositions and morphologies. For CO2 conversion, core–shell catalysts can provide distinctive advantages by addressing challenges such as catalyst sintering and activity loss in CO2 reforming processes, insufficient product selectivity in thermocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation, and low efficiency and selectivity in photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation. In the preceding decade, substantial progress has been made in the synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of core–shell catalysts for such potential applications. Nonetheless, challenges remain in the discovery of inexpensive, robust, regenerable catalysts in this class. The applicability of advanced composite materials with hierarchical structure that conjugate metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with macroporous materials is commonly limited by their inferior mechanical properties. Here, a universal green synthesis method for the in situ growth of MOF nanocrystals within wood substrates is introduced. Nucleation sites for different types of MOFs are readily created by a sodium hydroxide treatment, which is demonstrated to be broadly applicable to different wood species. The resulting MOF/wood composite exhibits hierarchical porosity with 130 times larger specific surface area compared to native wood. Assessment of the CO2 adsorption capacity demonstrates the efficient utilization of the MOF loading along with similar adsorption ability to that of pure MOF. Compression and tensile tests reveal superior mechanical properties, which surpass those obtained for polymer substrates. A dual system comprising two catalytic reactors connected in series was developed for the direct conversion of ethene to vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). The first reactor uses ZrO2-supported ceria (CeO2/ZrO2) to perform ethene oxychlorination to 1,2-dichloroethene (EDC) that is dehydrochlorinated to VCM in the second reactor over calcium-promoted γ-Al2O3. The choice of carrier for ceria is of critical importance to maximize the EDC production by reducing combustion products. While MgO, SiO2, SiC, TiO2, ZSM-5, and γ-Al2O3 carriers induced higher overoxidation compared to bulk ceria, ZrO2 was the only carrier that suppressed COx formation. Moreover, the latter carrier led to the highest oxychlorination activity. The unique performance of the CeO2/ZrO2 catalyst was rationalized by its ability to promote chlorine evolution and to suppress the combustion of chlorinated products, as inferred from the activity evaluation in HCl and VCM oxidation, respectively. The outstanding redox properties, enabling operation at low temperature and thus high selectivity, are associated with the formation of defective CeO2 nanoparticles, contrasting the low activity over Ce–Zr mixed oxide. In order to subsequently form VCM, an efficient EDC dehydrochlorination catalyst was designed by moderating the acidity of γ-Al2O3via calcium doping and used in a reactor after CeO2/ZrO2. This dual catalyst system displayed 100% selectivity to VCM at 25% ethene conversion, surpassing the space time yield of the best ethene-to-VCM catalyst EuOCl by a factor of four, where the first step is operated at an elevated temperature of about 100–150 K with respect to cupric chloride benchmarks. In addition, the catalytic dehydrochlorination, operated at a lower temperature of 100 K than the current non-catalytic process, showed minimized coke formation. Isolated atoms featuring unique reactivity are at the heart of enzymatic and homogeneous catalysts. In contrast, although the concept has long existed, single-atom heterogeneous catalysts (SACs) have only recently gained prominence. Host materials have similar functions to ligands in homogeneous catalysts, determining the stability, local environment, and electronic properties of isolated atoms and thus providing a platform for tailoring heterogeneous catalysts for targeted applications. Within just a decade, we have witnessed many examples of SACs both disrupting diverse fields of heterogeneous catalysis with their distinctive reactivity and substantially enriching our understanding of molecular processes on surfaces. To date, the term SAC mostly refers to late transition metal-based systems, but numerous examples exist in which isolated atoms of other elements play key catalytic roles. This review provides a compositional encyclopedia of SACs, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the introduction of this term. By defining single-atom catalysis in the broadest sense, we explore the full elemental diversity, joining different areas across the whole periodic table, and discussing historical milestones and recent developments. In particular, we examine the coordination structures and associated properties accessed through distinct single-atom–host combinations and relate them to their main applications in thermo-, electro-, and photocatalysis, revealing trends in element-specific evolution, host design, and uses. Finally, we highlight frontiers in the field, including multimetallic SACs, atom proximity control, and possible applications for multistep and cascade reactions, identifying challenges, and propose directions for future development in this flourishing field., Chemical Reviews, 120 (21), ISSN:0009-2665, ISSN:1520-6890

A critical assessment of methanol production from carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen is here presented, gathering an insightful picture of its wide sustainability and establishing a hierarchy of factors dictating its performance. Process simulation and life-cycle analysis indicate that green methanol is at present economically unattractive, i.e., it has a 1.3–2.6-fold higher cost compared to the current fossil-based analogue, even when considering indirect environmental costs via monetisation of impacts and a potential CO2 tax of at least 430.5 USD tCO2-eq−1. This is mainly due to the high price of hydrogen (water electrolysis powered with solar, wind, and nuclear energy, or biomass gasification, up to 73% of the total cost), which shall drop significantly due to reductions in electricity costs and technological advances. The scenario radically changes when quantifying for the first time the absolute sustainability of this carbon capture and utilisation route through eight planetary boundaries, revealing that CO2-based methanol would contribute to operating safely within critical ecological limits of the Earth linked to carbon emissions, currently transgressed by the conventional process.
