This study addresses flexible job shop scheduling problem (FJSP) with fuzzy processing time. The fuzzy or uncertainty of processing time is one of seven characteristics in remanufacturing. A discrete harmony search (DHS) algorithm is proposed for FJSP with fuzzy processing time. The objective is to minimise maximum fuzzy completion time. A simple and effective heuristic rule is proposed to initialise harmony population. Extensive computational experiments are carried out using five benchmark cases with eight instances from remanufacturing. The proposed heuristic rule is evaluated using five benchmark cases. The proposed DHS algorithm is compared to six metaheuristics. The results and comparisons show the effectiveness and efficiency of DHS for solving FJSP with fuzzy processing time. Crossover and mutation operators in NSGA-II are random and aimless, and encounter difficulties in generating offspring with high quality. Aiming to overcoming these drawbacks, we proposed an improved NSGA-II algorithm (INSGA-II) and applied it to solve the lot-streaming flow shop scheduling problem with four criteria. We first presented four variants of NEH heuristic to generate the initial population, and then incorporated the estimation of distribution algorithm and a mutation operator based on insertion and swap into NSGA-II to replace traditional crossover and mutation operators. Last but not least, we performed a simple and efficient restarting strategy on the population when the diversity of the population is smaller than a given threshold. This paper presents a hybrid Pareto-based local search (PLS) algorithm for solving the multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling problem. Three minimisation objectives are considered simultaneously, i.e. the maximum completion time (makespan), the total workload of all machines, and the workload of the critical machine. In this study, several well-designed neighbouring approaches are proposed, which consider the problem characteristics and thus can hold fast convergence ability while keep the population with a certain level of quality and diversity. Moreover, a variable neighbourhood search (VNS) based self-adaptive strategy is embedded in the hybrid algorithm to utilise the neighbouring approaches efficiently. Then, an external Pareto archive is developed to record the non-dominated solutions found so far. In addition, a speed-up method is devised to update the Pareto archive set. Experimental results on several well-known benchmarks show the efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm. In this paper, we investigate the use of a continuous algorithm for the no-idle permutation flowshop scheduling (NIPFS) problem with tardiness criterion. For this purpose, a differential evolution algorithm with variable parameter search (vpsDE) is developed to be compared to a well-known random key genetic algorithm (RKGA) from the literature. The motivation is due to the fact that a continuous DE can be very competitive for the problems where RKGAs are well suited. As an application area, we choose the NIPFS problem with the total tardiness criterion in which there is no literature on it to the best of our knowledge. The NIPFS problem is a variant of the well-known permutation flowshop (PFSP) scheduling problem where idle time is not allowed on machines. In other words, the start time of processing the first job on a given machine must be delayed in order to satisfy the no-idle constraint. The paper presents the following contributions. First of all, a continuous optimisation algorithm is used to solve a combinatorial optimisation problem where some efficient methods of converting a continuous vector to a discrete job permutation and vice versa are presented. These methods are not problem specific and can be employed in any continuous algorithm to tackle the permutation type of optimisation problems. Secondly, a variable parameter search is introduced for the differential evolution algorithm which significantly accelerates the search process for global optimisation and enhances the solution quality. Thirdly, some novel ways of calculating the total tardiness from makespan are introduced for the NIPFS problem. The performance of vpsDE is evaluated against a well-known RKGA from the literature. The computational results show its highly competitive performance when compared to RKGA. It is shown in this paper that the vpsDE performs better than the RKGA, thus providing an alternative solution approach to the literature that the RKGA can be well suited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• We study a new hot rolling scheduling problem from compact strip production. • We divide the problem into two sub-problems of minimizing virtual sheet strips and optimizing the sequence of sheet strips. • An improved heuristic is developed to minimize virtual sheet strips. • A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is proposed to optimize the sequence of sheet strips. • The effectiveness of the presented algorithms is demonstrated by example instances from practice. This paper addresses a hot-rolling scheduling problem from compact strip production processes. At first, a mathematical model that consists of two coupled sub-problems is presented. The first sub-problem is the sheet-strip assignment problem that is about how to assign sheet-strips to rolling-turns with the objective of minimizing virtual sheet-strips. The second is the sheet-strip sequencing problem that is about how to sort the sheet-strips in each rolling-turn with the objective of minimizing the maximal changes in thickness between adjacent sheet-strips and the change times of the thickness so as to ensure high quality sheet-strips to be produced. And then, an improved hot-rolling scheduling heuristic is proposed to solve the sheet-strip assignment problem. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is developed to find the Pareto optimal or near-optimal solutions for the sheet-strip sequencing problem. Besides, the problem-specific knowledge is explored. The key operators including crossover operator, mutation operator and repair operator are designed for the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. At last, extensive experiments based on real-world instances from a compact strip production process are carried out.
