Purpose: To analyze the visibility of the maxillary sinus septa (MSS) in panoramic radiography (PR) versus cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to investigate whether the buccal cortical bone thickness (BT) or the septa dimensions influence their visibility. Methods: Corresponding PR and CBCT images of 355 patients were selected and examined for MSS visibility. The septa dimensions (width, height, depth) and the BT were measured. Results were analysed statistically. Results: Comparing the corresponding regions on CBCT and PR, 170 MSS were identified; however, only 106 of these were also visible using PR. The MSS visibility was significantly higher on CBCT versus PR images (P1: p = 0.039, P2: p = 0.015, M1: p = 0.041, M2: p = 0.017, M3: p = 0.000), except region C (p = 0.625). Regarding the measurements of MSS dimensions, only the height in region M1 (p = 0.013) and the width in region P2 (p = 0.034) were significantly more visible on CBCT. The BT in the area of the MSS was found to have a marginal influence on its visibility on the PR images only in regions M3 and M1 (M3: p = 0.043, M1: p = 0.047). In terms of MSS visibility based on the dimensions, significance was found for all three influencing variables only in region P2 (width; p = 0.041, height; p = 0.001, depth; p = 0.007). There were only isolated cases of further significance: M3 for width (p = 0.043), M2 for height (p = 0.024), and P1 for depth (p = 0.034), no further significance was noted. Conclusion: MSS visibility appears significantly higher on CBCT versus PR images. It is concluded that the septa dimensions and BT can influence MSS visibility on PR images just in certain regions. Background/Objectives: Periapical lesions (PLs) are frequently detected in dental radiology. Accurate diagnosis of these lesions is essential for proper treatment planning. Imaging techniques such as orthopantomogram (OPG) and cone-beam CT (CBCT) imaging are used to identify PLs. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) software Diagnocat for PL detection in OPG and CBCT images. Methods: The study included 49 patients, totaling 1223 teeth. Both OPG and CBCT images were analyzed by AI software and by three experienced clinicians. All the images were obtained in one patient cohort, and findings were compared to the consensus of human readers using CBCT. The AI's diagnostic accuracy was compared to a reference method, calculating sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and F1 score. Results: The AI's sensitivity for OPG images was 33.33% with an F1 score of 32.73%. For CBCT images, the AI's sensitivity was 77.78% with an F1 score of 84.00%. The AI's specificity was over 98% for both OPG and CBCT images. Objectives: The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) and periodontal disease (periodontitis) (PD) in Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in relation to their treatment phase. Subjects and Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, 188 patients with CKD were divided into two groups: patients without dialysis (WD group, n = 53) and patients on dialysis (DP group, n = 135). Panoramic radiographs were used to diagnose AP. The presence of periodontal disease was evaluated radiographically assessing alveolar bone loss. Student's t‐test, chi‐squared test, and logistic regression analysis were used to determine the significance of differences between groups. Results: In the WD group, 55% of patients had at least one tooth with AP, whereas in the DP group 67% had at least one tooth with AP (OR = 2.11; 95% CI = 1.09–4.08; p < 0.05). PD was more prevalent in the DP group (78%) than in the WD group (36%) (OR = 6.26; CI 95% = 3.13–12.52; p < 0.01). Conclusions: Oral infections are more prevalent in the advanced stages of CKD. Introduction: The need for this study on the prevalence of hypodontia in a sample of orthodontic patients from Bosnia and Herzegovina arises from the fact that in the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is a lack of data on the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia as a previously defined, growing global problem and that it could emphasize the importance of its early diagnosis, as this is still the best standard for preventing the occurrence of complications due to a lack of teeth. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia in orthodontic patients in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods: The study was conducted in the Orthodontic Department of the University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Dentistry, with the Center for Clinical Dentistry. The study included all patients who presented to the Orthodontic Department in the period from January 2020 to March 2023 and whose diagnostic protocol included panoramic radiographs, which were analyzed for the purposes of this study. The sample consisted of the orthopantomography radiographs of 5084 patients (2031 males and 3053 females). Results: Hypodontia was found in 6.77% of orthodontic patients, of which 38.4% were male patients and 61.6% were female. The teeth most frequently affected by hypodontia were the second premolars (68.15%). After stratifying the sample by jaw, the most common hypodontic tooth was the second premolar in the mandible and the lateral incisor in the maxilla. Conclusion: We can conclude that the prevalence of hypodontia in orthodontic patients in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its distribution are very similar to the general population. The results of this study may help to improve the early diagnosis of hypodontia as a growing problem, which may reduce the complications that may arise from missing a tooth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mandibular foramen and its canal are one of the most important structures in the skull, as they solely supply the mandible through their associated nerves and vessels. Many anatomical variations have been reported in the literature until now, and this case report represents a clear-cut appearance of its shape in a panoramic radiograph, which is not mostly seen in normal panoramic radiographs. These factors are of utmost importance when it comes to performing various surgeries and preventing complications due to their varied anatomy, which will allow dentists to create a better treatment plan and provide better treatments without any complications. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the functionality and usability of machine learning (ML) in classifying missing teeth in panoramic radiography. Material and Method: In this study, of 1000 anonymous panoramic radiographs archived for the classification of missing teeth, 500 contained missing teeth, while the other 500 did not contain missing teeth. 700 of the images are reserved for training and 300 for testing. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to extract features from panoramic radiographs. Six different classification model algorithms (Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest Classifier, Logistic Regression, Neighbors Classifier, Decision Tree Classifier, and Gaussian NB) were used for missing/complete tooth classification on the created data set. The performance of these models was evaluated. Results: Among the classification models included in the study, the accuracy scores of SVM were found to be higher than other algorithms, with 98.14% in the training data set and 81.67% in the test data set. Conclusion: The selection of the appropriate machine learning model is very important to ensure accurate and reliable diagnosis in the field of medical image classification. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of employing a deep learning approach for the automated detection of pulp stones in panoramic imaging. A comprehensive dataset comprising 2409 panoramic radiography images (7564 labels) underwent labeling using the CranioCatch labeling program, developed in Eskişehir, Turkey. The dataset was stratified into three distinct subsets: training (n = 1929, 80% of the total), validation (n = 240, 10% of the total), and test (n = 240, 10% of the total) sets. To optimize the visual clarity of labeled regions, a 3 × 3 clash operation was applied to the images. The YOLOv5 architecture was employed for artificial intelligence modeling, yielding F1, sensitivity, and precision metrics of 0.7892, 0.8026, and 0.7762, respectively, during the evaluation of the test dataset. Among deep learning-based artificial intelligence algorithms applied to panoramic radiographs, the use of numerical identification for the detection of pulp stones has achieved remarkable success. It is expected that the success rates of training models will increase by using datasets consisting of a larger number of images. Tooth impaction is an abnormality that occurs when a tooth does not emerge into its place in the dental arch. Impacted permanent molar is an unusual condition that is usually detected during a routine examination. This impaction type is mostly problematic and can cause serious issues, especially when early detection and appropriate treatment are not achieved. This article highlights a case with a complaint of an ill-fitting denture, accompanied by an impacted molar that was identified during routine radiographic examination. The available treatment options include periodic follow-up, surgical exposure and orthodontic repositioning, and more invasively, surgical extraction and prosthetic replacement. The case was treated by a nonsurgical prosthodontics approach, in addition to regular follow-up, avoiding surgical interventions. This approach successfully restored both the patient’s function and esthetics. The case demonstrated the potential of prosthodontics therapy for managing impacted teeth and offering a minimally invasive and short treatment alternative to surgical and orthodontic interventions. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of common dental anomalies in children. Methods: In this study, 5280 digital orthopantomographic images of patients aged 5-16 years were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 3619 digital orthopantomographic images that met the study criteria were evaluated. Descriptive statistics of the categorical data obtained were analyzed using percentage and frequency analyses, followed by Pearson Chi-Square or Fisher’s Exact test for binary group comparisons. The significance level for statistical analyses was set at (p < 0.05). Results: In the individuals included in the study, at least one dental anomaly was detected in 13.78%. Numerical anomalies were the most commonly observed type of anomaly, with hypodontia being the anomaly with the highest prevalence in this group. A statistically significant difference was observed between genders in the frequency of supernumerary teeth, ectopy, and mesiodens (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Dental anomalies can occur in different types in humans. Clinicians can prevent future dental problems that may occur in later ages with the early diagnosis and treatment of dental anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a disorder of tooth development characterized by abnormal enamel formation. In order to detect other dental and jawbone abnormalities that could be associated with AI, a retrospective and analytic study was conducted comparing panoramic radiographs of AI and non‐AI patients. Material and Methods: Digital panoramic radiographs of 60 AI and 60 non‐AI patients were examined. Abnormalities in dental number, size, shape, eruption, and in the shape of the dental arches were checked and blindly recorded by two experimented observers. Descriptive statistics using percentages and chi‐square test with.05 level of significance value was used. Results: Prevalence of supernumerary teeth, dental agenesis, microdontia, taurodontism, radicular dilacerations, dental inclusions, temporary teeth persistence, and pulp calcifications was significantly higher in AI patients compared to control patients. Prevalence of periapical images, cysts, and hypercementosis was lower in AI patients compared to control patients, with no statistically significant difference. A significant prevalence of mandibular hypoplasia was also noted in AI patients. Conclusion: In addition to enamel defect, panoramic radiography was useful in detecting other dental abnormalities and mandibular hypoplasia associated with AI and should therefore be systematically indicated for AI patients' care. Background: The reliance on specialized diagnostic techniques is on the rise across various medical fields, including dentistry. While orthopantomogram (OPG), offers many advantages in terms of dental diagnosis, it also poses potential risks to sensitive organs, notably the thyroid gland. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the fluctuations in the absorbed dose within the thyroid gland during swallowing while undergoing an OPG procedure. Material and Methods: In this computational simulation study, the BEAMnrc Monte Carlo code was employed to model an OPG machine, using 700 million particles across the energy range of 60-75 keV, which is standard for OPG procedures. The Monte Carlo (MC) model was cross-verified by comparing the derived spectra with those in the IPEM Report 78. A head and neck phantom was constructed using CT scan images with a slice thickness of 5 mm. This phantom underwent simulated beam exposure under two conditions: pre-swallow and post-swallow. Subsequently, the percentage depth dose was measured and contrasted across different depths. Results: After swallowing, there was an increase in the absorbed dose across all three regions of the thyroid (right, left, and center). Notably, regions near the hyoid bone exhibited a particularly significant increase in dose. In certain areas, the absorbed dose even tripled when compared to the pre-swallowing state. Conclusion: The findings indicate that during OPG imaging, swallowing can lead to an increased radiation dose to the thyroid gland. Background: Dental development assessment is an important factor in dental age estimation and dental maturity evaluation. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the performance of an automated dental development staging system based on Demirjian's method using deep learning. Methods: The study included 5133 anonymous panoramic radiographs obtained from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry database at Seoul National University Dental Hospital between 2020 and 2021. The proposed methodology involves a three-step procedure for dental staging: detection, segmentation, and classification. The panoramic data were randomly divided into training and validating sets (8:2), and YOLOv5, U-Net, and EfficientNet were trained and employed for each stage. The models' performance, along with the Grad-CAM analysis of EfficientNet, was evaluated. Results: The mean average precision (mAP) was 0.995 for detection, and the segmentation achieved an accuracy of 0.978. The classification performance showed F1 scores of 69.23, 80.67, 84.97, and 90.81 for the Incisor, Canine, Premolar, and Molar models, respectively. In the Grad-CAM analysis, the classification model focused on the apical portion of the developing tooth, a crucial feature for staging according to Demirjian's method. Conclusions: These results indicate that the proposed deep learning approach for automated dental staging can serve as a supportive tool for dentists, facilitating rapid and objective dental age estimation and dental maturity evaluation. Introduction: Poor oral hygiene can cause infections and inflammatory diseases. Data on its impact on outcome after lung transplantation (LuTX) is scarce. Most transplant centers have individual standards regarding dental care as there is no clinical guideline. This study's objective was to assess LuTX‐listed patient's dental status and determine its effect on postoperative outcome. Methods: Two hundred patients having undergone LuTX from 2014 to 2019 were selected. Collected data comprised LuTX‐indication, periodontal status, and number of carious teeth/fillings. A preoperative panoramic dental X‐ray and a dentist's consultative clarification were mandatory. Results: 63.5% had carious dental status, differing significantly regarding TX‐indication (p < 0.001; ILD: 41.7% vs. CF: 3.1% of all patients with carious teeth). Mean age at the time of LuTX differed significantly within these groups. Neither preoperative carious dental status nor periodontitis or bone loss deteriorated post‐LuTX survival significantly. No evidence was found that either resulted in a greater number of deaths related to an infectious etiology. Conclusion: This study shows that carious dental status, periodontitis, and bone loss do not affect post‐TX survival. However, literature indicates that they can cause systemic/pulmonary infections that deteriorate post‐LuTX survival. Objective: To identify local radiographic risk factors for Medication‐Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ) in osteoporotic patients treated with antiresorptive drugs (ARD) and undergoing tooth extraction. Material and Methods: Patients were included in this retrospective, longitudinal, case‐control study, if having at least one administration of ARD, underwent tooth extraction(s), and had pre‐ and post‐operative panoramic radiographs. Additionally, a matched control group was selected. Three calibrated, blinded, and independent observers assessed each tooth extraction site. Statistical analysis compared control against study group, and within the latter, sites MRONJ+ and MRONJ−. Results: In total, 120 patients (99 females/21 males) with 354 tooth extractions were included, from which nine patients (7.5%) and eleven tooth extraction sites (3.1%) developed MRONJ. When comparing control with study group, the latter showed significantly more thickened lamina dura, persistence of the alveolar socket, heterogeneous bone patterns, and sequestrum formation. In the study group, MRONJ developed significantly more in males (19%, p = 0.049), smokers (25%, p = 0.008), in the mandible (82%, p = 0.027), when identifying a radiolucent or sclerotic trabecular pattern (p = 0.004) or when extracting teeth with furcation involvement (p < 0.001), root remnants (p = 0.017), or unrestored caries lesions (p = 0.005). Periapical cyst is considered one of the most common non-odontogenic cysts affecting oral and maxillofacial tissues. It is characterized by having a pathological cavity lined with epithelium, and is most often asymptomatic, originating from a tooth without vitality, derived from a long-term inflammatory process, and for this reason, it ends up being considered an imaging finding when diagnosed through imaging exams. The aim of this study is to report a clinical case of a root cyst in the mandibular body region, emphasizing the large volume and extent of the lesion presented, relating endodontic treatment with the use of biomaterial to fill the tooth, and the association of the surgical technique of cystic enucleation. A 63-year-old male patient presented with a periapical cyst located at the apex of tooth 34, a radiographic finding discovered through a complementary examination (panoramic radiography) requested during a routine consultation. Endodontic treatment was chosen for tooth 34, associated with surgical treatment of the cystic lesion in the mandible, using the enucleation technique. The surgical intervention associated with the endodontic treatment proved to be effective based on the imaging exams, where it was possible to see the beginning of bone neoformation and maintenance of the tooth without altering its masticatory function. Recently, an artificial intelligence-based computer-assisted diagnosis (AI-CAD) for panoramic radiography was developed to scan the inferior margin of the mandible and automatically evaluate mandibular cortical morphology. The aim of this study was to analyze quantitatively the mandibular cortical morphology using the AI-CAD, especially focusing on underlying diseases and dental status in women over 20 years of age. 419 patients in women over 20 years of age who underwent panoramic radiography were included in this study. The mandibular cortical morphology was analyzed with an AI-CAD that evaluated the degree of deformation of the mandibular inferior cortex (MIC) and mandibular cortical index (MCI) automatically. Those were analyzed in relation to underlying diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, rheumatism and osteoporosis, and dental status, such as the number of teeth present in the maxilla and mandible. The degree of deformation of MIC in women under 51 years of age (21–50 years; n = 229, 16.0 ± 12.7) was significantly lower than those of over 50 years of age (51–90 years; n = 190, 45.1 ± 23.0), and the MCI was a significant difference for the different age group. Regarding the degree of deformation of MIC and MCI in women over 50 years of age, osteoporosis and number of total teeth present in the maxilla and mandible were significant differences. The results of this study indicated that the mandibular cortical morphology using the AI-CAD is significantly related to osteoporosis and dental status in women over 50 years of age. Sialolithiasis along with sialadenitis is one of the commonly occurring salivary gland disorders. Sialadenitis is an inflammatory disease of the salivary glands. It usually occurs insidiously causing pain to the patient and may lead to development of fibrous mass of the salivary gland. The cause of sialadenitis is most commonly due to the salivary duct caliculi which is termed as sialolith or salivary stones which causes statis of saliva in the ducts. This condition is usually accompanied by pain and tenderness of the involved site. Therefore, we report a case of a male patient aged 60 years with pain in the floor of the mouth in the submandibular region which was diagnosed as submandibular sialolithiasis along with sialadenitis and propose a diagnostic algorithm. Panoramic radiography imaging modality is widely used by dentists for diagnosing dental and jaw conditions. It can also detect carotid artery calcification (CAC), indicative of calcified atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries. This cross-sectional retrospective study at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center investigated the link between CAC identified on panoramic radiograph (PR) and cerebrovascular accident (CVA), coronary artery disease (CAD), and poor oral health. Data from 314 CAC patients collected from 2014 to 2023 included age at diagnosis, gender, and clinical histories of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, CVA, CAD, and the decay, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index. These patients were age- and gender-matched with non-CAC patients for analysis. The findings revealed high prevalences of hypertension (86.2%), hyperlipidemia (57.6%), diabetes mellitus (30.7%), CVA (15.5%), and CAD (28.7%) amongst CAC patients and the average DMFT index was 26.6. A comparative analysis of 276 matched controls demonstrated significant differences in hypertension (85.9% vs. 57.6%), hyperlipidemia (58.3% vs. 33.7%), diabetes (32.6% vs. 22.1%), CVA history (14.9% vs. 5.1%), CAD (26.1% vs. 9.8%), and DMFT scores (26.3 vs. 23.7), all indicating strong associations between CAC and these health conditions. The adjusted analysis showed that hypertension (aOR: 3.20 [95% CI: 2.06–5.07]), hyperlipidemia (aOR: 1.70 [95% CI: 1.14–2.50]), CVA (aOR: 2.20 [95% CI: 1.13–4.30]), and CAD (aOR: 2.10 [95% CI: 1.28–3.60]) were significantly associated with CAC. Dentigerous cysts are known as the second most common type of cyst in the jaws. The cyst is one of the lesions occurred frequently in the posterior body of the mandible and is often related to the unerupted third molar and forms around the crown of the unerupted tooth attaching at the cementoenamel junction. Such characteristic appearances are the diagnostic points differentiating from ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocyst. However, it would be hard for us to diagnose it as a dentigerous cyst if the lesion does not show its typical appearance. We experienced two cases of dentigerous cysts which did not form around the crown of the unerupted tooth on radiologically. Both cysts were relatively large and resorbed adjacent teeth roots. Therefore, an ameloblastoma or an odontogenic keratocyst was suspected rather than a dentigerous cyst as the imaging diagnosis. The biopsy revealed that the lesion was a "dentigerous cyst" in one of the cases and "developmental cyst with inflammation" in another case. After the excision, the histopathological diagnosis was a dentigerous cyst with inflammation in both cases. This report shows the two cases of dentigerous cysts focusing on panoramic radiography and CT images. Also, we discuss the differential diagnosis by reconsidering those diagnostic points. We report an unusual case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) in the submandibular gland. The mass had a unique calcification. Panoramic tomography revealed sponge-like calcification. The central portion displayed heterogeneous high signal intensity on T1-weighted image (T1WI) and T2-weighted image (T2WI), and heterogeneously moderate signal intensity on a short-TI inversion recovery (STIR) image. The ADC was low (0.78 × 10−3mm2/sec). After surgical excision, a pathological examination revealed that the mass contained CXPA as a minor component. Tumor cells with large hyperchromatic nuclei and eosinophilic or clear cytoplasm proliferated in irregular small tubule formations or cribriform or Roman-bridge structures in hyalinized or focally ossified stroma. The entire mass was calcified, particularly in the central region. Taken together, the reduced T1 relaxation times were related to the surface effects of diamagnetic particles, which were observed at calcium particle concentrations of up to 30%. We report a CXPA with unusual sponge-like calcification, which appeared unusually hyperintense on T1WI due to a surface effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to find out which soft tissue simulation material have been studied to use in dentomaxillofacial radiology and showed similarity in radiodensity to the soft tissues of the maxillofacial region. Methods: In this scoping review, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Google scholar and PubMed databases were searched on April 9, 2023, considering the following PICOS: Population: soft tissue simulants, Intervention: X-ray-based imaging, Comparison: —, Outcome: properties of the soft tissue simulants, Study design: in-vitro studies. Screening, study selection, and data extraction were performed by two independent researchers. A third team member was consulted in the case of disagreement. Quality assessment of the included studies was made using Quality Assessment Tool For In-Vitro Studies (QUIN Tool). Results: Of the initial 1172 articles retrieved in the database search, 13 studies were included in the review. Seven studies had a low risk of bias. In 8 studies, computed tomography (CT) or cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), in 4 studies intraoral radiography, and in 2 studies panoramic radiography was used (one study has used CT/CBCT and panoramic radiography). The studies varied in the radiographic modality, acquisition parameters, selected outcomes, and gold standard. In the majority of the studies (n = 10, 77%), acrylic resin derivatives were used in the soft tissue simulant formula alone or as a major component. Wax was used in the simulant material in 8 studies (62%). In addition, in 3 studies (23%) ice/water was used as the main simulant. Conclusion: Ballistic gelatin, expanded 2-cm thick polystyrene with or without 1-cm utility wax, and 0.5 cm of acrylic resin were shown to have a radiographic density similar to soft tissue in standardized studies employing CBCT scanning. For intraoral radiographs, using self-polymerizing acrylic resin, utility wax, and wood, as well as a polymethylmethacrylate box filled with water in thicknesses ranging from 4 to 45 mm, provides suitable radiographic contrast. However, for 4 and 8 mm of wax and 4 mm of water, the radiographic contrast is not appropriate. In addition, 13–17 mm wax and 14.5 mm acrylic resin showed acceptable soft tissue densities in intraoral radiography. Further studies using different imaging modalities with standardized conditions and objective metrics are required to confirm the most appropriate soft tissue simulant material for in-vitro dental radiographic research. Radicular cysts are the most common cystic lesions in the oral cavity, and have a rare occurrence in the primary dentition. We report a case of radicular cyst of mandible in child by multimodal imaging including panoramic radiography, CT, and MR imaging. A 7-year-old girl presented with swelling and without pain, and hypoesthesia on the right side of the mandible. On clinical examination, an expansive lesion with undulation was found to the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. Panoramic radiograph showed a unilocular radiolucency with well-defined margin, displaced tooth, and root resorption in the right mandible. Regarding CT imaging, axial soft tissue algorithm CT and bone tissue algorithm CT showed a low-attenuation internal structure and expansion of the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. Three-dimensional-CT showed expansion of the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. Multiplanar reformation imaging showed displaced tooth, root resorption, and expansion of the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. On T1-weighted image, the expansive lesion showed low signal intensity, and T2-weighted and STIR images revealed high signal intensity. A partial biopsy of the mandibular region was performed. Histopathological diagnosis was radicular cyst caused by apical periodontitis with abscess. The current case report aims to document a rare presentation of a distant odontogenic lesion of a 35-year-old male patient with mild clinical discomfort in the mandibular right first molar; exploring the diagnostic and therapeutic intricacies of an uncommon distant endodontic pathosis ultimately resolved through meticulous nonsurgical retreatment. Despite a normal oral examination, diagnostic radiography revealed a suboptimal root canal treatment and apical lesions surrounding mesial- and distal-root apices; including a distinct radiolucency beneath the apex of the second mandibular molar discovered through panoramic radiography, and confirmed via cone-beam computed tomography. In addition, the computed tomography disclosed a previously unreported and unusually large endodontic lesion that extended toward the mandibular canal; highlighting a necessity for the continued exploration of a unique endodontic presentation. A nonsurgical endodontic retreatment led to a remarkable reduction in the radiolucent lesions within one year; emphasizing the significance of comprehensive diagnostic approaches and individualized treatments. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with perforation of the undercut (U)-shaped lingual plate (LP) by the lower third molar (LM3) root using panoramic radiography (PAN). We retrospectively examined 468 impacted LM3s from 468 individuals, categorizing LM3–LP associations and LP morphology in the coronal section of cone-beam computed tomography as perforation or nonperforation and U-type or non-U-type, respectively. The outcome was the combination of perforation and U-type, and study variables included patient demographics (age and sex) and PAN-associated features (Winter's classification, Pell–Gregory classification, and two major Rood signs). Multivariate logistic regression methods were used for analysis. Perforated and U-type LPs were observed in 205 (43.8%) and 212 (45.3%) cases, respectively. The double-positive outcome was observed in 126 LM3s (26.9%). In the multivariate model, age ≥ 26 years [odds ratio (OR), 2.66; p = 0.002], men (OR, 2.01; p = 0.002), mesioangular (OR, 2.74; p = 0.038) and horizontal impaction (OR, 3.05; p = 0.019), and root darkening (OR, 1.73; p = 0.039) were independently associated with the risk. Class III impaction (OR, 0.35; p = 0.021) and interruption of the white line (OR, 0.55; p = 0.017) were negatively correlated with the risk. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of identifying the higher probability of U-type LP perforation by the LM3 root in men aged over their midtwenties with Class I/II impaction and mesioangularly or horizontally impacted LM3s, along with root darkening and no interruption of the white line on PAN. Panoramic radiography imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnostic process of dental diseases. However, current artificial intelligence research datasets for panoramic radiography dental image processing are often limited to single-center and single-task scenarios, making it difficult to generalize their results. To address this, we present a multi-center, multi-task labeled dataset. In this study, our dataset comprises three datasets obtained from different hospitals. The first set has 4940 panoramic radiography images and corresponding labels from the Stemmatological Hospital of the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University. The second set includes 716 panoramic radiography images and labels from the People's Hospital of Yinchuan City, Ningxia. The third dataset contains 880 panoramic radiography images and labels from a hospital in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. This comprehensive dataset encompasses three types of dental diseases: impacted teeth, periodontitis, and dental caries. Specifically, it comprises 2555 images related to impacted teeth, 2735 images related to periodontitis, and 1246 images related to dental caries. In order to evaluate the performance of the dataset, we conducted benchmark tests for segmentation and classification tasks on our dataset. The results show that the presented dataset could be effectively used for benchmarking segmentation and classification tasks critical to the diagnosis of dental diseases. Adult age estimation is one of the most challenging problems in forensic science and physical anthropology. In this study, we aimed to develop and evaluate machine learning (ML) methods based on the modified Gustafson's criteria for dental age estimation. In this retrospective study, a total of 851 orthopantomograms were collected from patients aged 15 to 40 years old. The secondary dentin formation (SE), periodontal recession (PE), and attrition (AT) of four mandibular premolars were analyzed according to the modified Gustafson's criteria. Ten ML models were generated and compared for age estimation. The partial least squares regressor outperformed other models in males with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 4.151 years. The support vector regressor (MAE = 3.806 years) showed good performance in females. The accuracy of ML models is better than the single-tooth model provided in the previous studies (MAE = 4.747 years in males and MAE = 4.957 years in females). The Shapley additive explanations method was used to reveal the importance of the 12 features in ML models and found that AT and PE are the most influential in age estimation. The findings suggest that the modified Gustafson method can be effectively employed for adult age estimation in the southwest Chinese population. Modern photon counting detectors allow the calculation of virtual monoenergetic or material decomposed X-ray images but are not yet used for dental panoramic radiography systems. To assess the diagnostic potential and image quality of photon counting detectors in dental panoramic radiography, ethics approval from the local ethics committee was obtained for this retrospective study. Conventional CT scans of the head and neck region were segmented into bone and soft tissue. The resulting datasets were used to calculate panoramic equivalent thickness bone and soft tissue images by forward projection, using a geometry like that of conventional panoramic radiographic systems. The panoramic equivalent thickness images were utilized to generate synthetic conventional panoramic radiographs and panoramic virtual monoenergetic radiographs at various energies. The conventional, two virtual monoenergetic images at 40 keV and 60 keV, and material-separated bone and soft tissue panoramic equivalent thickness X-ray images simulated from 17 head CTs were evaluated in a reader study involving three experienced radiologists regarding their diagnostic value and image quality. Compared to conventional panoramic radiographs, the material-separated bone panoramic equivalent thickness image exhibits a higher image quality and diagnostic value in assessing the bone structure p <. 001 and details such as teeth or root canals p <. 001 . Background: Endodontic literature search revealed that no study has been conducted to evaluate the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) in root canal treated teeth from an adult Nepalese population of Madhesh Province. Consequently, little is known about the extent and risk factors associated with it. This study aimed to determine AP prevalence in root canal treated teeth from an adult Nepalese subpopulation and to analyze the related risk factors including age, sex, tooth type, type of coronal restoration and quality of root canal treatment and coronal restoration as predictors of AP. Methods: Digital panoramic radiographs were evaluated. Periapical status of 300 root canal-treated teeth was scored by using the periapical index. The quality of root canal treatment and coronal restorations were categorized as adequate or inadequate through radiographic and clinical evaluation. The data were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. Results: Prevalence of AP in the present study was 31.7%. In 45.7% of the treated teeth, quality of root canal treatment was adequate whereas 46% of the cases had adequate coronal restorations. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed statistically significant associations and remarkably increased risk for AP in teeth with inadequate root canal treatment (odds ratio [OR] = 7.92; 95% CI: 3.96–15.82; p < 0.001) whereas lower risk for AP was found in females (OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.28–0.90; p = 0.021) and in teeth restored with crown (OR = 0.22; 95% CI: 0.09–0.51; p < 0.001) and filling (OR = 0.18; 95% CI: 0.08–0.42; p < 0.001). Quality of coronal restoration, tooth type and age of the patient were not found to be the predictors of AP. Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, a high prevalence of AP and poor overall quality of root canal treatment and coronal restoration was found in the subpopulation studied. Quality of root canal treatment, type of coronal restoration and sex of the patient are significant predictors of possible AP development in root canal treated teeth. Objective: Panoramic radiographs (PRs) provide a comprehensive view of the oral and maxillofacial region and are used routinely to assess dental and osseous pathologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to improve the diagnostic accuracy of PRs compared to bitewings and periapical radiographs. This study aimed to evaluate the advantages and challenges of using publicly available datasets in dental AI research, focusing on solving the novel task of predicting tooth segmentations, FDI numbers, and tooth diagnoses, simultaneously. Materials and methods: Datasets from the OdontoAI platform (tooth instance segmentations) and the DENTEX challenge (tooth bounding boxes with associated diagnoses) were combined to develop a two-stage AI model. The first stage implemented tooth instance segmentation with FDI numbering and extracted regions of interest around each tooth segmentation, whereafter the second stage implemented multi-label classification to detect dental caries, impacted teeth, and periapical lesions in PRs. The performance of the automated tooth segmentation algorithm was evaluated using a free-response receiver-operating-characteristics (FROC) curve and mean average precision (mAP) metrics. The diagnostic accuracy of detection and classification of dental pathology was evaluated with ROC curves and F1 and AUC metrics. Results: The two-stage AI model achieved high accuracy in tooth segmentations with a FROC score of 0.988 and a mAP of 0.848. High accuracy was also achieved in the diagnostic classification of impacted teeth (F1 = 0.901, AUC = 0.996), whereas moderate accuracy was achieved in the diagnostic classification of deep caries (F1 = 0.683, AUC = 0.960), early caries (F1 = 0.662, AUC = 0.881), and periapical lesions (F1 = 0.603, AUC = 0.974). The model's performance correlated positively with the quality of annotations in the used public datasets. Selected samples from the DENTEX dataset revealed cases of missing (false-negative) and incorrect (false-positive) diagnoses, which negatively influenced the performance of the AI model. Conclusions: The use and pooling of public datasets in dental AI research can significantly accelerate the development of new AI models and enable fast exploration of novel tasks. Background: The most severe complication that can occur after mandibular third molar (MM3) surgery is inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) damage. It is crucial to have a comprehensive radiographic evaluation to reduce the possibility of nerve damage. The objective of this study is to assess the diagnostic accuracy of panoramic radiographs (PR) and posteroanterior (PA) radiographs in identifying the association between impacted MM3 roots and IAN. Methods: This study included individuals who had PR, PA radiographs, and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and who had at least one impacted MM3. A total of 141 impacted MM3s were evaluated on CBCT images, and the findings were considered gold standard. The relationship between impacted MM3 roots and IAN was also evaluated on PR and PA radiographies. The data was analyzed using the McNemar and Chi-squared tests. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and diagnostic accuracy of PR and PA radiographies were determined. Results: Considering CBCT the gold standard, the relationship between MM3 roots and IAN was found to be statistically significant between PR and CBCT (p = 0.00). However, there was no statistically significant relationship between PA radiography and CBCT (0.227). The study revealed that the most prevalent limitation of the PR in assessing the relationship between MM3 roots and IAN was the identification of false-positive relationship. Conclusions: PA radiography may be a good alternative in developing countries to find out if there is a contact between MM3 roots and IAN because it is easier to get to, cheaper, and uses less radiation. Background: The correlation between dental maturity and skeletal maturity has been proposed, but its clinical application remains challenging. Moreover, the varying correlations observed in different studies indicate the necessity for research tailored to specific populations. Aim: To compare skeletal maturity in Korean children with advanced and delayed dental maturity using dental maturity percentile. Design: Dental panoramic radiographs and cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 5133 and 395 healthy Korean children aged between 4 and 16 years old. Dental maturity was assessed with Demirjian's method, while skeletal maturity was assessed with the cervical vertebral maturation method. Standard percentile curves were developed through quantile regression. Advanced (93 boys and 110 girls) and delayed (92 boys and 100 girls) dental maturity groups were defined by the 50th percentile. Results: The advanced group showed earlier skeletal maturity in multiple cervical stages (CS) in both boys (CS 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6) and girls (CS 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6). Significant differences, as determined by Mann-Whitney U tests, were observed in CS 1 for boys (p = 0.004) and in CS 4 for girls (p = 0.037). High Spearman correlation coefficients between dental maturity and cervical vertebral maturity exceeded 0.826 (p = 0.000) in all groups. Conclusion: A correlation between dental and skeletal maturity, as well as advanced skeletal maturity in the advanced dental maturity group, was observed. Background: Investigation is to utilize decision trees in conjunction with orthopantomography (OPT) and lateral panoramic graphy (LPG) to diagnose unilateral anterior disc displacement (ADD) of the temporomandibular joint. Methods: In this study, 161 patients with images obtained through all three imaging methods, MRI, OPT, and LPG, were selected from the archives. The participants were categorized into two groups: the study group, comprising 89 patients with unilateral anterior disc displacement, and the control group, consisting of 72 healthy individuals. Measurements, including 2 angles (antero-posterior angle and superior-inferior angle) and 3 distance parameters (anterior joint space distance, superior joint space distance, and posterior joint space distance), were conducted on each imaging modality dataset. To assess the obtained measurement data within each patient, the differences from each measurement were calculated. Statistical analysis of the measurement differences between the control and study groups was carried out with independent t test, and decision trees were generated using the SPSS 25 decision tree module 5.0. Results: In ADD patients, it was statistically significantly found that the APA increased while the SIA decreased for angle measurements. But for linear measurements, AS increased while the SS and PS decreased in MRI, OPT, and LPG. Conclusion: ADD can be diagnosed in OPT and LPG. Simple Summary: This study delves into bisphosphonate therapy's effects on oral health in 80 breast and prostate cancer patients with bone metastases. Objective: Marginal alveolar bone loss is one of the key features of periodontitis and can be observed via panoramic radiographs. This study aimed to establish a cascading learning method with deep learning (DL) for precise radiographic bone loss (RBL) measurements at specific tooth positions. Materials and methods: Through the design of two tasks for tooth position recognition and tooth semantic segmentation using the SegFormer model, specific tooth's crown, intrabony portion, and suprabony portion of the roots were obtained. The RBL was subsequently measured by length through these three areas using the principal component analysis (PCA) principal axis. Results: The average intersection over union (IoU) for the tooth position recognition task was 0.8906, with an F1-score of 0.9338. The average IoU for the tooth semantic segmentation task was 0.8465, with an F1-score of 0.9138. When the two tasks were combined, the average IoU was 0.7889, with an F1-score of 0.8674. The correlation coefficient between the RBL prediction results based on the PCA principal axis and the clinicians' measurements exceeded 0.85. Compared to those of the other two methods, the average precision of the predicted RBL was 0.7722, the average sensitivity was 0.7416, and the average F1-score was 0.7444. Conclusions: The method for predicting RBL using DL and PCA produced promising results, offering rapid and reliable auxiliary information for future periodontal disease diagnosis. Clinical relevance: Precise RBL measurements are important for periodontal diagnosis. The proposed RBL-SF can measure RBL at specific tooth positions and assign the bone loss stage. Background. The aim of this study is to determine the atheromatous plaques' prevalence in orthopantomography and their relationship with periodontal disease and missing teeth. Material and Methods. Orthopantomographs of 1,254 patients over 18 years of age from Clínica Arlanza in Lerma, Burgos, were examined between 2017 and 2021. A Planmeca ProOne® orthopantomograph (68 kV, 7 mA, and 10 sg) was used. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS Statistics® version 25. The results of the categorical variables were described as frequencies (%). Contingency tables were made with the qualitative variables, and the chi-square test was applied to study the relationship among them. The measure of statistical power used was the relative risk (RR), which was described with its respective 95% confidence interval (CI). Student's t-test was applied to study the relationship between the qualitative variable "presence or absence of atheroma plaque" and the quantitative variable "number of teeth." Results. A 6.2% prevalence of atheroma plaques was obtained from 1,079 selected X-rays. The risk in patients with periodontal disease increased as periodontal disease worsened. Objectives: To evaluate the performance of a commercially available Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) in describing and establishing differential diagnoses for radiolucent lesions in panoramic radiographs. Materials and methods: Twenty-eight panoramic radiographs, each containing a single radiolucent lesion, were evaluated in consensus by three examiners and a commercially available ChatGPT-3.5 model. They provided descriptions regarding internal structure (radiodensity, loculation), periphery (margin type, cortication), shape, location (bone, side, region, teeth/structures), and effects on adjacent structures (effect, adjacent structure). Diagnostic impressions related to origin, behavior, and nature were also provided. The GPT program was additionally prompted to provide differential diagnoses. Keywords used by the GPT program were compared to those used by the examiners and scored as 0 (incorrect), 0.5 (partially correct), or 1 (correct). Mean score values and standard deviation were calculated for each description. Performance in establishing differential diagnoses was assessed using Rank-1, -2, and − 3. Results: Descriptions of margination, affected bone, and origin received the highest scores: 0.93, 0.93, and 0.87, respectively. Shape, region, teeth/structures, effect, affected region, and nature received considerably lower scores ranging from 0.22 to 0.50. Rank-1, -2, and − 3 demonstrated accuracy in 25%, 57.14%, and 67.85% of cases, respectively. Conclusion: The performance of the GPT program in describing and providing differential diagnoses for radiolucent lesions in panoramic radiographs is variable and at this stage limited in its use for clinical application. This review aims to evaluate the accuracy of various mandibular radiomorphometric indices in comparison with DEXA BMD measurements in the diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis based on a meta-analysis of the sensitivity and specificity of the indices. PRISMA statement was followed. The materials for analysis were collected in August 2023 by searching three databases: PubMed Central, Web of Science, and Scopus. The selection of studies consisted of three selection stages, and 64 articles were finally obtained. Quality assessment was performed with the QUADAS-2 tool, and the general methodological quality of retrieved studies was low. Statistical analysis was performed based on 2 × 2 tables and estimated sensitivity and specificity were obtained using SROC curves. The most used indices were MCI, MCW and PMI. The best results in detecting reduced BMD obtained for MCW ≤ 3 mm, estimated sensitivity and specificity were 0.712 (95% CI, 0.477–0.870) and 0.804 (95% CI, 0.589–0.921), respectively. The most prone to the risk of bias is the MCI due to the examiner's subjectivism. Radiomorphometric indices of the mandible can be useful as a screening tool to identify patients with low BMD, but should not be used as a diagnostic method. Further research needs to focus on analysing the ability of the indices to detect osteoporosis and also in combination the indices with clinical parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a novel method for real‐time generation of seamless spherical panoramic videos from an omnidirectional multi‐camera system (OMS). Firstly, a multi‐view video alignment model called spherical projection constrained thin‐plate spline (SP‐TPS) was established and estimated using an approximately symmetrical seam‐line, maintaining the structure inconsistency around the seam‐line. Then, a look‐up table was designed to support real‐time processing of video re‐projection, video dodging and seam‐line updates. In the table, the overlapping areas in OMS multi‐view videos, the seam‐lines between spherical panoramas and OMS multi‐view videos and the pixel coordinate mapping relationship between spherical panoramas and OMS multi‐view videos were pre‐stored as a whole. Finally, a spherical panoramic video was outputted in real‐time through look‐up table computation under an ordinary GPU processor. The experiments were conducted on multi‐view video taken by "1 + 4" and "1 + 7" OMS, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with four state‐of‐the‐art methods reported in the literature and two bits of commercial software for video stitching, the proposed method excels in eliminating visual artefacts and demonstrates superior adaptability to scenes with varying depths of field. Assuming that OMS is not movable in the scene, this method can generate seamless spherical panoramic videos with a resolution of 8 K in real time, which is of great value to the surveillance field. A biometric system is used to identify and authenticate a person based on the information, which are unique biological traits to work effectively. Physiological biometrics such as fingerprint, face, iris, etc., provide reliable information for human identification. However, most of these cannot be used in the case of identifying a person after a disaster. In this paper a dental biometric technique is presented based on dental radiographs and photographs. It is aimed to obtain casualty identification with photographs, in circumstances where radiographs are unavailable. Here, it is proposed to improve the shape extraction performance by using shape descriptors and skeleton. The obtained data from the test image are compared with the set of database images and the best match is obtained for authentication. An improved nodal-based matching is proposed with both dental radiographs and photographs to improve the matching rate. The final matching is carried out with both the shape information and nodal graphs obtained. The hit rate obtained is comparable with the existing algorithm with a rank −1 accuracy of 78%. The purpose of this research was to test the reliability of a modified magnification method for determining the position of an impacted canine from a single panoramic radiograph. This retrospective study evaluated 114 panoramic radiographs showing 136 impacted maxillary canines. The widths of the impacted canines, contralateral erupted canines, and ipsilateral maxillary incisors were measured, and ratios for the canine-incisor index (CII) and canine-canine index (CCI) were calculated. The impacted canines were also classified according to their location in the vertical plane (apical, middle, or coronal zone) relative to the contralateral central incisor. Continuous data were analyzed for normal distribution, and logistic and multivariate logistic regression models were conducted. The Benjamini-Hochberg procedure with a false discovery rate of 0.05 was used to account for multiple testing. The intrarater reliability was excellent for impacted canine, central incisor, and contralateral canine measurements (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.9). The CII and vertical zone were strong predictors of an impacted canine position with clinically useful sensitivity and specificity values (0.69 and 0.74, respectively, based on an area under the curve concordance statistic of 0.75). A predictive range was evident for the CII of palatally (1.10-1.39) and buccally (0.90-1.19) impacted canines in the middle and coronal zones, respectively. The occurrence of palatal or buccal positioning was not significantly associated with the CCI (P = 0.2). The CII and vertical zone identified from a single panoramic radiograph can be used to determine the buccopalatal position of an impacted canine, with more reliability if the impacted canine crown is in the middle or coronal zone of the contralateral central incisor. Abnormalities commonly encountered in dental practice include tooth and supporting tissue issues such as caries, periapical abnormalities, resorption, and impacted third molars. Panoramic radiographs are frequently used for image scanning in dentistry and oral surgery. Diagnosing dental anomalies can be time-consuming due to the complexity of the orthodontic area, potentially leading to inaccuracies. This research proposes an end-to-end automated detection of dental and supporting tissue anomalies in patients, encompassing cavities, periapical lesions, resorption, and impacted third molars. This study evaluated the effectiveness of employing various pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network architectures, including ResNet-50, ResNeXt-50 32×4d, Inception-V3, and EfficientNet-V2. To enhance model performance, a batch normalization technique was integrated into the classification layer of these pre-trained models. Data pre-processing techniques, including horizontal and vertical flips, as well as random affine transformations, were applied to augment the dataset. Additionally, an image normalization procedure was implemented before the training and prediction phases. In the evaluation on 202 images, the integrated ResNeXt-50 32x4d model with batch normalization achieved the highest accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score of 83.663%, 81.615%, 81.271%, and 81.066%, respectively. Based on the F1-score, this model demonstrates promising predictions of tooth and supporting tissue anomalies in an imbalanced dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives To investigate the management of imaging errors from panoramic radiography (PAN) datasets used in the development of machine learning (ML) models. Methods This systematic literature followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and used three databases. Keywords were selected from relevant literature. Eligibility criteria PAN studies that used ML models and mentioned image quality concerns. Results Out of 400 articles, 41 papers satisfied the inclusion criteria. All the studies used ML models, with 35 papers using deep learning (DL) models. PAN quality assessment was approached in 3 ways: acknowledgement and acceptance of imaging errors in the ML model, removal of low-quality radiographs from the dataset before building the model, and application of image enhancement methods prior to model development. The criteria for determining PAN image quality varied widely across studies and were prone to bias. Conclusions This study revealed significant inconsistencies in the management of PAN imaging errors in ML research. However, most studies agree that such errors are detrimental when building ML models. More research is needed to understand the impact of low-quality inputs on model performance. Prospective studies may streamline image quality assessment by leveraging DL models, which excel at pattern recognition tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Panoramic radiography (OPG) evaluates mandibular third molar impaction (MTMI). This systematic review aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of OPG in detecting bone loss distal to the lower second molars. The associated bone loss with different impaction positions and the most prevalent positions of MTMI were investigated as secondary outcomes. In January 2023, PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane were searched to identify studies published between January 2012 and January 2023. Two examiners blindly selected the eligible studies for data extraction and quality assessment. Of 427 studies, 8 were suitable for data extraction. All studies reported bone loss distal to the second molar using OPG, ranging from 4.9 to 62.9%. The most frequent position of MTMI is mesioangular. The distal bone loss in the vertical and horizontal positions is statistically significant compared to typically positioned third molars and those that are fully erupted or impacted, but in a normal orientation (p-value 0.005 and 0.02, respectively). Bone loss was not statistically significant in the mesioangular position compared to other impacted positions (p-value 0.14). The risk of bias ranges between 66 and 88%. Despite its limitations, OPG is still considered a valuable tool to assess bone loss distal to the lower second molar in cases of an impacted mandibular third molar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
