The Mid Infra Red Instrument (MIRI) is one of the four instruments onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), providing imaging, coronagraphy and spectroscopy over the 5-28 microns band. To verify the optical performance of the instrument, extensive tests were performed at CEA on the flight model (FM) of the Mid-InfraRed IMager (MIRIM) at cryogenic temperatures and in the infrared. This paper reports on the point spread function (PSF) measurements at 5.6 microns, the shortest operating wavelength for imaging. At 5.6 microns the PSF is not Nyquist-sampled, so we use am original technique that combines a microscanning measurement strategy with a deconvolution algorithm to obtain an over-resolved MIRIM PSF. The microscanning consists in a sub-pixel scan of a point source on the focal plane. A data inversion method is used to reconstruct PSF images that are over-resolved by a factor of 7 compared to the native resolution of MIRI. We show that the FWHM of the high-resolution PSFs were 5-10% wider than that obtained with Zemax simulations. The main cause was identified as an out-of-specification tilt of the M4 mirror. After correction, two additional test campaigns were carried out, and we show that the shape of the PSF is conform to expectations. The FWHM of the PSFs are 0.18-0.20 arcsec, in agreement with simulations. 56.1-59.2% of the total encircled energy (normalized to a 5 arcsec radius) is contained within the first dark Airy ring, over the whole field of view. At longer wavelengths (7.7-25.5 microns), this percentage is 57-68%. MIRIM is thus compliant with the optical quality requirements. The Herschel GASPS Key Program is a survey of the gas phase of protoplanetary discs, targeting 240 objects which cover a large range of ages, spectral types, and disc properties. To interpret this large quantity of data and initiate self-consistent analyses of the gas and dust properties of protoplanetary discs, we have combined the capabilities of the radiative transfer code MCFOST with the gas thermal balance and chemistry code ProDiMo to compute a grid of 300 000 disc models (DENT). We present a comparison of the first Herschel/GASPS line and continuum data with the predictions from the DENT grid of models. Our objective is to test some of the main trends already identified in the DENT grid, as well as to define better empirical diagnostics to estimate the total gas mass of protoplanetary discs. Photospheric UV radiation appears to be the dominant gas-heating mechanism for Herbig stars, whereas UV excess and/or X-rays emission dominates for T Tauri stars. The DENT grid reveals the complexity in the analysis of far-IR lines and the difficulty to invert these observations into physical quantities. The combination of Herschel line observations with continuum data and/or with rotational lines in the (sub-)millimetre regime, in particular CO lines, is required for a detailed characterisation of the physical and chemical properties of circumstellar discs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the A&A Herschel special issue

Planets are formed in disks around young stars. With an age of ~10 Myr, TW Hya is one of the nearest T Tauri stars that is still surrounded by a relatively massive disk. In addition a large number of molecules has been found in the TW Hya disk, making TW Hya the perfect test case in a large survey of disks with Herschel-PACS to directly study their gaseous component. We aim to constrain the gas and dust mass of the circumstellar disk around TW Hya. We observed the fine-structure lines of [OI] and [CII] as part of the Open-time large program GASPS. We complement this with continuum data and ground-based 12CO 3-2 and 13CO 3-2 observations. We simultaneously model the continuum and the line fluxes with the 3D Monte-Carlo code MCFOST and the thermo-chemical code ProDiMo to derive the gas and dust masses. We detect the [OI] line at 63 micron. The other lines that were observed, [OI] at 145 micron and [CII] at 157 micron, are not detected. No extended emission has been found. Preliminary modeling of the photometric and line data assuming [12CO]/[13CO]=69 suggests a dust mass for grains with radius < 1 mm of ~1.9 times 10^-4 Msun (total solid mass of 3 times 10^-3 Msun) and a gas mass of (0.5--5) times 10^-3 Msun. Context - Circumstellar discs are ubiquitous around young stars, but rapidly dissipate their gas and dust on timescales of a few Myr. The Herschel space observatory allows for the study of the warm disc atmosphere, using far-infrared spectroscopy to measure gas content and excitation conditions, and far-IR photometry to constrain the dust distribution. Aims - We aim to detect and characterize the gas content of circumstellar discs in four targets as part of the Herschel science demonstration phase. Methods - We carried out sensitive medium resolution spectroscopy and high sensitivity photometry at lambda ~60-190 micron using the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer instrument on the Herschel space observatory. Results - We detect [OI] 63 micron emission from the young stars HD 169142, TW Hydrae, and RECX 15, but not HD 181327. No other lines, including [CII] 158 and [OI] 145, are significantly detected. All four stars are detected in photometry at 70 and 160 micron. In an effort to simultaneously study the gas and dust components of the disc surrounding the young Herbig Ae star HD 169142, we present far-IR observations obtained with the PACS instrument onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. This work is part of the Open Time Key Project GASPS, which is aimed at studying the evolution of protoplanetary discs. To constrain the gas properties in the outer disc, we observed the star at several key gas-lines, including [OI] 63.2 and 145.5 micron, [CII] 157.7 micron, CO 72.8 and 90.2 micron, and o-H2O 78.7 and 179.5 micron. We only detect the [OI] 63.2 micron line in our spectra, and derive upper limits for the other lines. We complement our data set with PACS photometry and 12/13CO data obtained with the Submillimeter Array. Furthermore, we derive accurate stellar parameters from optical spectra and UV to mm photometry. We model the dust continuum with the 3D radiative transfer code MCFOST and use this model as an input to analyse the gas lines with the thermo-chemical code ProDiMo. Our dataset is consistent with a simple model in which the gas and dust are well-mixed in a disc with a continuous structure between 20 and 200 AU, but this is not a unique solution. Our modelling effort allows us to constrain the gas-to-dust mass ratio as well as the relative abundance of the PAHs in the disc by simultaneously fitting the lines of several species that originate in different regions. Our results are inconsistent with a gas-poor disc with a large UV excess; a gas mass of 5.0 +/- 2.0 times 10^(-3) Msun is still present in this disc, in agreement with earlier CO observations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in the A&A Herschel special issue

Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is the supermassive black hole residing at the center of the Milky Way. It has been the main target of an extensive multiwavelength campaign we carried out in April 2007. Herein, we report the detection of a bright flare from the vicinity of the horizon, observed simultaneously in X-rays (XMM/EPIC) and near infrared (VLT/NACO) on April 4th for 1-2 h. For the first time, such an event also benefitted from a soft gamma-rays (INTEGRAL/ISGRI) and mid infrared (VLT/VISIR) coverage, which enabled us to derive upper limits at both ends of the flare spectral energy distribution (SED). We discuss the physical implications of the contemporaneous light curves as well as the SED, in terms of synchrotron, synchrotron self-Compton and external Compton emission processes., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ASR

We discuss observational evidence that quasars play a key role in the formation of galaxies starting from the detailed study of the quasar HE0450-2958 and extending the discussion to a series of converging evidence that radio jets may trigger galaxy formation. The direct detection with VISIR at the ESO-VLT of the 7 kpc distant companion galaxy of HE0450-2958 allows us to spatially separate the sites of quasar and star formation activity in this composite system made of two ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). No host galaxy has yet been detected for this quasar, but the companion galaxy stellar mass would bring HE0450-2958 in the local M(BH)-M(stellar bulge) relation if it were to merge with the QSO. This is bound to happen because of their close distance (7 kpc) and small relative velocity (~60-200 km/s). We conclude that we may be witnessing the building of the M(BH)-M(stellar bulge) relation, or at least of a major event in that process. The star formation rate (~340 Msun/yr), age (40-200 Myr) and stellar mass ([5-6]x10^10 Msun) are consistent with jet-induced formation of the companion galaxy. We suggest that HE0450-2958 may be fueled in fresh material by cold gas accretion from intergalactic filaments. We map the projected galaxy density surrounding the QSO as a potential tracer of intergalactic filaments and discuss a putative detection. Comparison to other systems suggests that inside-out formation of quasar host galaxies and jet-induced galaxy formation may be a common process. Two tests are proposed for this new paradigm: (1) the detection of offset molecular gas or dust emission with respect to the position of distant QSOs, (2) the delayed formation of host galaxies as a result of QSO activity, hence the two step building of the M(BH)/M(stellar bulge) ratio., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (with minor corrections)

This paper reports measurements of Sgr A* made with NACO in L' -band (3.80 um), Ks-band (2.12 um) and H-band (1.66 um) and with VISIR in N-band (11.88 um) at the ESO VLT, as well as with XMM-Newton at X-ray (2-10 keV) wavelengths. On 4 April, 2007, a very bright flare was observed from Sgr A* simultaneously at L'-band and X-ray wavelengths. No emission was detected using VISIR. The resulting SED has a blue slope (beta > 0 for nuL_nu ~ nu^beta, consistent with nuL_nu ~ nu^0.4) between 12 micron and 3.8 micron. For the first time our high quality data allow a detailed comparison of infrared and X-ray light curves with a resolution of a few minutes. The IR and X-ray flares are simultaneous to within 3 minutes. However the IR flare lasts significantly longer than the X-ray flare (both before and after the X-ray peak) and prominent substructures in the 3.8 micron light curve are clearly not seen in the X-ray data. From the shortest timescale variations in the L'-band lightcurve we find that the flaring region must be no more than 1.2 R_S in size. The high X-ray to infrared flux ratio, blue nuL_nu slope MIR to L' -band, and the soft nuL_nu spectral index of the X-ray flare together place strong constraints on possible flare emission mechanisms. We find that it is quantitatively difficult to explain this bright X-ray flare with inverse Compton processes. A synchrotron emission scenario from an electron distribution with a cooling break is a more viable scenario., Comment: ApJ, 49 pages, 9 figures

We present high-resolution spectroscopic mid-infrared observations of the circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae star HD97048 obtained with the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed (VISIR). We conducted observations of mid-infrared pure rotational lines of molecular hydrogen (H2) as a tracer of warm gas in the disk surface layers. In a previous paper, we reported the detection of the S(1) pure rotational line of H2 at 17.035 microns and argued it is arising from the inner regions of the disk around the star. We used VISIR on the VLT for a more comprehensive study based on complementary observations of the other mid-infrared molecular transitions, namely S(2) and S(4) at 12.278 microns and 8.025 microns respectively, to investigate the physical properties of the molecular gas in the circumstellar disk around HD97048. We do not detect neither the S(2) line nor the S(4) H2 line from the disk of HD97048, but we derive upper limits on the integrated line fluxes which allows us to estimate an upper limit on the gas excitation temperature, T_ex < 570 K. This limit on the temperature is consistent with the assumptions previously used in the analysis of the S(1) line, and allows us to set stronger contraints on the mass of warm gas in the inner regions of the disk. Indeed, we estimate the mass of warm gas to be lower than 0.1 M_Jup. The 12.81 micrometer [NeII] line has recently gained interest as a potential tracer of gas in the tenuous surface layers of circumstellar disks. The line has been detected using the Spitzer Space Telescope in many young stars, yet these observations neiter spatially nor spectrally resolve the [NeII emission, leaving the nature of the emission mechanism unclear. Both an origin in an X-ray irradiated disk surface and an origin in strong, dissociative shocks have been proposed. We have performed a high spatial and spectral resolution (0.4 arcsec, R=30000) study of the T Tau triplet. This system contains three young stars with disks, at least one strong X-ray source (T Tau N), and diffuse regions of shocked gas surrounding the system on a scale of a few arcseconds. We find that the dominant component of [NeII] emission is centered on T Tau S and has a spatial extent of approximately 1.1 arcseconds, which is much larger than the disks in T Tau S. We detect spatially extended red-shifted emission NW of the system and fainter blue-shifted emission to the SE, which we associate with the N-S outflow from T Tau S. Only a small fraction of the [NeII] emission appears to be directly related to the X-ray bright northern component. We propose [NeII] emission in jets as a major factor causing the observed large scatter in the X-ray luminosity vs. [NeII] luminosity relation. We present ground-based observations of the disk around the A-type star $\beta$ Pictoris to perform a close inspection of the inner disk morphology. Images were collected with NACO, the AO-assisted near-IR instrument on the VLT (ESO) which includes two types of coronagraphs: classical Lyot masks and phase masks. In this program we took advantage of both types of coronagraphs in two spectral bands, H-band for the Lyot mask and Ks-band for the phase mask. In addition, we simulated an extended object to understand the limitations in deconvolution of coronagraphic images. The reduced coronagraphic images allow us to carefully measure the structures of the debris disk and reveal a number of asymmetries of which some were not reported before (position, elevation and thickness of the warp). In this program, the circumstellar material is visible as close as 0.7" ($13.5 $AU) owing to the phase mask while the Lyot mask generates artifacts which hamper the detection of the dust at separations closer than 1.2" ($23.2 $AU). The point source detection limit is compared to recently published observations of a planet candidate. Finally, the simulations show that deconvolution of coronagraphic data may indeed produce artificial patterns within the image of a disk., Comment: 13 pages, to appear in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Context: Molecular hydrogen (H2) is the most abundant molecule in the circumstellar (CS) environments of young stars, and is a key element in giant planet formation. The measurement of the H2 content provides the most direct probe of the total amount of CS gas, especially in the inner warm planet-forming regions of the disks. Aims: Most Herbig Be stars (HBes) are distant from the Sun and their nature and evolution are still debated. We therefore conducted mid-infrared observations of H2 as a tracer of warm gas around HBes known to have gas-rich CS environments. Methods: We report a search for the H2 S(1) emission line at 17.0348 microns in the CS environments of 5 HBes with the high resolution spectroscopic mode of VISIR (ESO VLT Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed). Results: No source shows evidence for H2 emission at 17.0348 microns. Stringent 3sigma upper limits on the integrated line fluxes are derived. Depending on the adopted temperature, limits on column densities and masses of warm gas are also estimated. These non-detections constrain the amount of warm (>150 K) gas in the immediate CS environments of our target stars to be less than 1-10 Jupiter masses., Comment: Research Note accepted for publication in A&A, 5 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables

Context: The earliest phases of massive star formation are currently much debated. Aims. In an effort to make progress, we took a census of Class0-like protostellar dense cores in the NGC 3576 region, one of the nearest and most luminous embedded sites of high-mass star formation in the Galaxy. Methods: We used the P-ArTeMiS bolometer camera on the APEX telescope to produce the first 450-micron dust continuum map of the filamentary dense clump associated with NGC 3576. Results: Combining our 450-micron observations with existing data at other wavelengths, we have identified seven massive protostellar sources along the NGC 3576 filament and placed them in the M_env - L_bol evolutionary diagram for protostars. Conclusions: Comparison with theoretical evolutionary tracks suggests that these seven protostellar sources will evolve into massive stars with masses M* ~ 15-50 Msun. Four sources are classified as candidate high-mass Class 0 objects, two sources as massive Class I objects, and one source appears to be at an intermediate stage., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures + 2 online figures, 2 online tables. In a previous work, three bright MIR/radio sources were discovered in the nuclear region of NGC1365. We here confirm that these sources are young and massive ``embedded'' clusters, and derive their parameters, such as extinction, age and mass. Using ISAAC and VISIR at the VLT we obtained NIR and MIR maps and LR spectra. The dataset is first interpreted by comparing the observations with images and spectra of the close-by young cluster R136 in the LMC and then by using model predictions for both the nebular emission lines and the spectral energy distribution of the sources. We produce maps of the region containing the three sources in the R, J, Ks, L' bands and at 12.8micro. We also provide spectra in K, L and N. The spectral energy distribution of the three sources rises with wavelength. Emission lines from ionised hydrogen and molecular hydrogen are detected, as well as PAH emission. Conspicuous [NeII]12.8 line is also present, while neither the [ArIII] 8.9 nor the [SIV] 10.4 lines are detected. This provides a stringent constraint on the age of the sources: they are relatively evolved young clusters (6-8 Myr). Owing to their ionising photon rates and ages, they must be extremely massive clusters (around 10^7 solar masses). Their MIR spectral energy distribution suggests the presence of two components: (1) an optically thin component, with a continuum comparable to that of R136, and (2) an optically thick component which might be related to subsequent or on-going episodes of star formation. These sources are good candidates for evolving according to a bi-modal hydrodynamical regime, in which matter is trapped at the centre of a compact and massive cluster., Comment: A&A accepted, 23 pages, 22 figures and 1 table

Preliminary site testing datasets suggest that Dome C in Antarctica is one of the best sites on Earth for astronomical observations in the 200 to 500 micron regime, i.e. for far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre (submm) astronomy. We present an overview of potential science cases that could be addressed with a large telescope facility at Dome C. This paper also includes a presentation of the current knowledge about the site characterics in terms of atmospheric transmission, stability, sky noise and polar constraints on telescopes. Current and future site testing campaigns are finally described., Comment: 20

Dust enshrouded activity can ideally be studied by mid-infrared (MIR) observations. In order to explore the AGN versus star forming origin of the nuclear MIR emission of galaxies, observations of high spatial resolution are required. Here we report on 11.3mic. observations with VISIR at the VLT, reaching 0.35'' spatial resolution (FWHM). During the scientific verification of VISIR we have observed a sample of 36 nearby galaxies having a variety of optically classified nuclear activity: 17 black hole driven active galactic nuclei (AGN), 10 starbursts (SBs) and 9 quiet spirals. 16/17 AGN are detected and unresolved, 5/10 SBs are detected and resolved with structured emission up to a few arcsec, while for 5/10 SB and all 9 quiet nuclei low upper limits are provided. The morphology of the resolved SB nuclei follows that seen at radio frequencies. The compactness of AGN and the extent of the SB nuclei is consistent with predictions from radiative transfer models and with MIR spectra of lower spatial resolution. We explore the nuclear MIR surface brightness as a quantitative measure. While AGN and SB cannot be distinguished with MIR data from 4m class telescopes, our data provide evidence that, up to a distance of 100 Mpc, AGN and SB can well be separated by means of MIR surface brightness when using 8m class telescopes., Comment: accepted by A&A: 14 pages, 5 Figures; rsiebenm@eso.org

In order to improve our understanding of substellar formation, we have performed a compositional and structural study of a brown dwarf disk. We present the result of photometric, spectroscopic and imaging observations of 2MASS J04442713+2512164, a young brown dwarf (M7.25) member of the Taurus association. Our dataset, combined with results from the literature, provides a complete coverage of the spectral energy distribution from the optical to the millimeter including the first photometric measurement of a brown dwarf disk at 3.7mm, and allows us to perform a detailed analysis of the disk properties. The target was known to have a disk. High resolution optical spectroscopy shows that it is intensely accreting, and powers a jet and an outflow. The disk structure is similar to that observed for more massive TTauri stars. Spectral decomposition models of Spitzer/IRS spectra suggest that the mid-infrared emission from the optically thin disk layers is dominated by grains with intermediate sizes (1.5micron). Crystalline silicates are significantly more abondant in the outer part and/or deeper layers of the disk, implying very efficient mixing and/or additional annealing processes. On 4 July 2005 at 05:52 UT, the impactor of NASA's Deep Impact (DI) mission crashed into comet 9P/Tempel 1 with a velocity of about 10 km/s. The material ejected by the impact expanded into the normal coma, produced by ordinary cometary activity. The characteristics of the non-impact coma and cloud produced by the impact were studied by observations in the visible wavelengths and in the near-IR. The scattering characteristics of the "normal" coma of solid particles were studied by comparing images in various spectral regions, from the UV to the near-IR. For the non-impact coma, a proxy of the dust production has been measured in various spectral regions. The presence of sublimating grains has been detected. Their lifetime was found to be about 11 hours. Regarding the cloud produced by the impact, the total geometric cross section multiplied by the albedo was measured as a function of the color and time. The projected velocity appeared to obey a Gaussian distribution with the average velocity of the order of 115 m/s. By comparing the observations taken about 3 hours after the impact, we have found a strong decrease in the cross section in J filter, while that in Ks remained almost constant. This is interpreted as the result of sublimation of grains dominated by particles of sizes of the order of some microns., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We present high resolution spectroscopic mid-infrared observations of the circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae star HD97048 with the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed (VISIR). We detect the S(1) pure rotational line of molecular hydrogen (H2) at 17.035 microns arising from the disk around the star. This detection reinforces the claim that HD97048 is a young object surrounded by a flared disk at an early stage of evolution. The emitting warm gas is located within the inner 35 AU of the disk. The line-to-continuum flux ratio is much higher than expected from models of disks at local thermodynamics equilibrium. We investigate the possible physical conditions, such as a gas-to-dust mass ratio higher than 100 and different excitation mechanisms of molecular hydrogen (X-ray heating, shocks, ...) in order to explain the detection. We tentatively estimate the mass of warm gas to be in the range from 0.01 to nearly 1 Jupiter Mass. Context: To investigate the formation of sub-stellar objects, we observed a sample of ultracool dwarf members of the Upper Scorpius OB association. Aims: The properties of disks, such as their composition, life-time, and frequency compared to the accretor frequency, provide important clues to the mechanisms responsible for the formation of stellar and sub-stellar objects. Methods: We report the results of mid-IR observations with VISIR at the VLT of 10 ultracool dwarf members of the nearby Upper Scorpius OB association in four filters ranging from 8.59 (PAH1) to 12.8 ¿m (Ne II) and one brown dwarf obserbed with Spitzer between 3.6 and 24 ¿m. Results: Seven of our targets were detected in at least one of the bands, and we derived upper limits on the fluxes of the remaining 4. These results combined with previous studies from the literature lead to an improved disk frequency of 50±12%. This frequency is significantly higher than for accretors (16.3%±6.2%). Only one object showing mid-IR excess also has H¿ emission at a level that indicates it must be accreting. Four of the detected targets are multiple system candidates. Conclusions: .The observed disk frequency for sub-stellar objects in the Upper Scorpius association is similar to that of stars, consistent with a common formation scenario. It is also similar to the disk fractions observed in younger clusters, suggesting that the disk lifetimes might be longer for ultracool dwarfs than for higher-mass stars.

We present a new mode of observations with VISIR, the mid-InfraRed (mid-IR) imager and spectrometer on the VLT (ESO, Chile): the so-called BURST mode. This mode allows to reach the diffraction limit of the telescope. To illustrate results obtained with this mode, we discuss observations of disks around Herbig Ae stars. These stars are the more massive analogues of T Tauri stars and are believed to harbour circumstellar disks. The 10-20 microns atmospheric windows are well-suited to study the extended emission of these objects. With a 8 m class telescope, in fair seeing conditions, the observations are diffraction-limited at 10 microns and the spatial resolution could reach the diffraction limit of 0.3 arcsec. As a result, it is possible to resolve disks with a typical size of 100 AU around objects at a distance of 100 pc. Planet formation has been known for many years to be tied to the spatial distribution of gas and dust in disks around young stars. To constrain planet formation models, imaging observations of protoplanetary disks are required. In this framework, we have undertaken a mid-infrared imaging survey of Herbig Ae stars, which are pre-main sequence stars of intermediate mass still surrounded by a large amount of circumstellar material. The observations were made at a wavelength of 20.5 $\mu$m with the CAMIRAS camera mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. We report the observations of three stars, HD135344, CQTau and HD163296. The circumstellar material around the three objects is spatially resolved. The extensions feature a disk like shape. The images provide direct information on two key parameters of the disk : its inclination and its outer radius. The outer radius is found to be quite different from the one deduced from disk models only constrained by fitting the Spectral Energy Distribution of the object. Other parameters of the disk, such as flaring, dust mass have been deduced from fitting both the observed extension and the spectral energy distribution with sophisticated disk models. High resolution mid-infrared (MIR) images of the central region of NGC1068 have been obtained with VISIR, the multi-mode MIR instrument recently installed at the ESO/VLT on Paranal. A map of the emission at 12.8mic with increased sensitivity over the central 8"x 8" area is discussed. It shows a central core (unresolved along the E-W direction) and an extended emission which draws a spiral pattern similar to that observed on near-infrared images. Patches of MIR emission can be detected up to a distance of 4" from the core. The deconvolved 12.8mic map is fully consistent with previous high-resolution MIR observations. It highlights the structure of the extended emission, already seen on the un-deconvolved image, and allows to identify a set of mid-infrared sources: 7 in the NE quadrant and 5 in the SW quadrant. The MIR emission map is compared with those obtained at comparable angular resolution in the near-infrared and in the [OIII] line emission. The very good correlation between the VISIR map and the HST optical map supports the idea that the MIR emission not associated with the torus arises from dust associated with the narrow line region clouds. The N-S extension of the MIR core (0.44") is then probably simply due to the mixing of the MIR emission from the dusty torus and the MIR emission from NLR cloud B, located only 0.1" to the North., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure (reduced quality), accepted MNRAS Letter. High resolution, mid-infrared (MIR) images of a set of nine nearby active galaxies are presented. The data were obtained with the TIMMI2 instrument mounted at the ESO 3.6m telescope using a set of N-band narrow filters. The resulting images have an angular resolution of 0.6"-1". The MIR emission has been resolved in four galaxies: NGC253, NGC1365, NGC1808 and NGC7469. The images unveil a circumnuclear population of unknown MIR sources in NGC1365 and NGC1808, coincident with radio sources. These MIR/radio sources are interpreted in terms of embedded young star clusters. A high-resolution MIR map of NGC253 is also presented, and enables the identification of a previously unknown MIR counterpart to the radio nucleus. Extended MIR emission is detected in NGC7469, and concurs with previous observations in the NIR and radio. For this source, an interesting morphological difference between the 10.4mic and the 11.9mic emission is observed, suggesting the presence of a dust-rich micro-bar. Our MIR images of Circinus do not show resolved emission from the nucleus down to an angular scale of 0.5". In the case of NGC2992, an upper limit to the extended MIR emission can be set. We have imaged $\epsilon$ Indi B, the closest brown dwarf binary known, with VISIR at the VLT in three narrow-band mid-infrared bandpasses located around 8.6$\mu$m, 10.5$\mu$m and 11.3$\mu$m. We are able to spatially resolve both components, and determine accurate mid-infrared photometry for both components independently. In particular, our VISIR observations probe the NH$_3$ feature in the atmospheres of the cooler and warmer brown dwarfs. For the first time, we can disentangle the contributions of the two components, and find that % our photometry of $\epsilon$ IndiBb is in good agreement with recent ``cloud-free'' atmosphere models having an effective temperature of $T_\mathrm{eff}=800$ K. With an assumed age of 1 Gyr for the $\epsilon$ Indi system, component Ba agrees more with $T_\mathrm{eff} \approx 1100$ K rather than with $T_\mathrm{eff}=1200$ K, as suggested by SPITZER spectroscopic observations of the combined $\epsilon$ Indi B system (Roellig et al., 2004). Even higher effective temperatures appear inconsistent with our absolute photometry, as they would imply an unphysical small size of the brown dwarf $\epsilon$ IndiBa., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

On 4 July 2005, many observatories around the world and in space observed the collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 or its aftermath. This was an unprecedented coordinated observational campaign. These data show that (i) there was new material after impact that was compositionally different from that seen before impact; (ii) the ratio of dust mass to gas mass in the ejecta was much larger than before impact; (iii) the new activity did not last more than a few days, and by 9 July the comet's behavior was indistinguishable from its pre-impact behavior; and (iv) there were interesting transient phenomena that may be correlated with cratering physics.

We present results of a coronographic imaging search for circumstellar dust disks with the Adaptive Optics Near Infrared System (ADONIS) at the ESO 3.6m telescope in La Silla (Chile). 22 candidate stars, known to be orbited by a planet or to show infrared excess radiation, were examined for circumstellar material. In the PSF-subtracted images no clear disk was found. We further determine the detection sensitivities and outline how remaining atmospheric fluctuations still can hamper adaptive optics observations., Comment: To appear in A&A, in press
