A tournament H is quasirandom-forcing if the following holds for every sequence (G_n) of tournaments of growing orders: if the density of H in G_n converges to the expected density of H in a random tournament, then (G_n) is quasirandom. Every transitive tournament with at least 4 vertices is quasirandom-forcing, and Coregliano et al. [Electron. J. Combin. 26 (2019), P1.44] showed that there is also a non-transitive 5-vertex tournament with the property. We show that no additional tournament has this property. This extends the result of Bucic et al. [Combinatorica 41 (2021), 175-208] that the non-transitive tournaments with seven or more vertices do not have this property.

In this article, we consider scenarios in which traditional estimates for the active subspace method based on probabilistic Poincar\'e inequalities are not valid due to unbounded Poincar\'e constants. Consequently, we propose a framework that allows to derive generalized estimates in the sense that it enables to control the trade-off between the size of the Poincar\'e constant and a weaker order of the final error bound. In particular, we investigate independently exponentially distributed random variables in dimension two or larger and give explicit expressions for corresponding Poincar\'e constants showing their dependence on the dimension of the problem. Finally, we suggest possibilities for future work that aim for extending the class of distributions applicable to the active subspace method as we regard this as an opportunity to enlarge its usability., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

In this paper, we study the emergence of a Landauer transport regime from the quantum-mechanical dynamics of free electrons in a disordered tight-binding chain, which is coupled to finite leads with open boundaries. Both partitioned and partition-free initial conditions are analyzed and seen to give rise, for large enough leads, to the same spatially uniform quasi-steady-state current, which agrees with the Landauer value. The quasi-steady-state regime is preceded by a transient regime, which last for a time proportional to the length of the disordered sample, and followed by recursions, after a time that is proportional to the lead size. These theoretical predictions may be of interest to future experiments on transport of fermionic ultra-cold atoms across optical lattices. We also observe finite-size current oscillations, superimposed on the quasi-steady-state, whose behavior depends crucially on the conditions initially imposed on the system. Finally, we show how a time-resolved Kubo formula is able to reproduce this Landauer transport regime, as the leads grow bigger., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
This technical note is an ancillary material for our research paper (Itoh and Parente, 2019). We discuss an alternating direction method of multipliers with generalized augmented terms (ADMM-GAT) and introduce a generalized residual balance technique for efficiently employing ADMM-GAT. These techniques are applied to least absolute deviation and its constrained version and their algorithmic details are presented. These algorithms are used for the implementation of the method described in (Itoh and Parente, 2019)., Comment: 9 pages, 0 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures ---formed by stacking or growing two-dimensional (2D) crystals on top of each other--- have emerged as a new promising route to tailor and engineer the properties of 2D materials. Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), a simple vdW structure where the interference between two misaligned graphene lattices leads to the formation of a moir\'e pattern, is a test bed to study the effects of the interaction and misalignment between layers, key players for determining the electronic properties of these stackings. In this chapter, we present in a pedagogical way the general theory used to describe lattice mismatched and misaligned vdW structures. We apply it to the study of tBLG in the limit of small rotations and see how the coupling between the two layers leads both to an angle dependent renormalization of graphene's Fermi velocity and appearance of low-energy van Hove singularities. The optical response of this system is then addressed by computing the optical conductivity and the dispersion relation of tBLG surface plasmon-polaritons.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Neutrinos with energies above $10^{17}$ eV are detectable with the Surface Detector Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The identification is efficiently performed for neutrinos of all flavors interacting in the atmosphere at large zenith angles, as well as for Earth-skimming $\tau$ neutrinos with nearly tangential trajectories relative to the earth. No neutrino candidates were found in $\sim\,14.7$ years of data taken up to 31 August 2018. This leads to restrictive upper bounds on their flux. The $90\%$ C.L. single-flavor limit to the diffuse flux of ultra-high-energy neutrinos with an $E_\nu^{-2}$ spectrum in the energy range $1.0 \times 10^{17}~{\rm eV} - 2.5 \times 10^{19}~{\rm eV}$ is $E^2 {\rm d}N_\nu/{\rm d}E_\nu < 4.4 \times 10^{-9}~{\rm GeV~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~sr^{-1}}$, placing strong constraints on several models of neutrino production at EeV energies and on the properties of the sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays., Comment: Published version, 27 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
With the Surface Detector array (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory we can detect neutrinos with energy between $10^{17}\,$eV and $10^{20}\,$eV from point-like sources across the sky, from close to the Southern Celestial Pole up to $60^\circ$ in declination, with peak sensitivities at declinations around $\sim -53^\circ$ and $\sim+55^\circ$, and an unmatched sensitivity for arrival directions in the Northern hemisphere. A search has been performed for highly-inclined air showers induced by neutrinos of all flavours with no candidate events found in data taken between 1 Jan 2004 and 31 Aug 2018. Upper limits on the neutrino flux from point-like steady sources have been derived as a function of source declination. An unrivaled sensitivity is achieved in searches for transient sources with emission lasting over an hour or less, if they occur within the field of view corresponding to the zenith angle range between $60^\circ$ and $~95^\circ$ where the SD of the Pierre Auger Observatory is most sensitive to neutrinos., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

According to a recent investigation, an estimated 33-50% of the world's coral reefs have undergone degradation, believed to be as a result of climate change. A strong driver of climate change and the subsequent environmental impact are greenhouse gases such as methane. However, the exact relation climate change has to the environmental condition cannot be easily established. Remote sensing methods are increasingly being used to quantify and draw connections between rapidly changing climatic conditions and environmental impact. A crucial part of this analysis is processing spectroscopy data using radiative transfer models (RTMs) which is a computationally expensive process and limits their use with high volume imaging spectrometers. This work presents an algorithm that can efficiently emulate RTMs using neural networks leading to a multifold speedup in processing time, and yielding multiple downstream benefits., Comment: Accepted to International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) 2019 Workshop: Climate Change: How Can AI Help?

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S.\ collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, Review published in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

Condensed Matter - Disordered Systems and Neural Networks - Abstract
The possibility of having a delocalization transition in the 1D de Moura-Lyra class of models (having a power-spectrum $\propto q^{-\alpha})$ has been the object of a long standing discussion in the literature, filled with ambiguities. In this letter, we report the first numerical evidences that such a transition happens at $\alpha=1$, where the localization length (measured from the scaling of the conductance) is shown to diverge as $(1-\alpha)^{-1}$. The persistent finite-size scaling of the data is shown to be caused by a very slow convergence of the nearest-neighbor correlator to its infinite-size limit, and controlled by the choice of a proper scaling parameter. This last conclusion leads to the re-interpretation of the localization in these models to be caused by an effective Anderson uncorrelated model at small length-scales. Finally, the numerical results are confirmed by analytical perturbative calculations which are built on previous work., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures Submitted to Physical Review B on the 25th of March 2019

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
In this work, we present numerical results for the second and third order conductivities of the plain graphene and gapped graphene monolayers associated with the second and third harmonic generation, the optical rectification and the optical Kerr effect. The frequencies considered here range from the microwave to the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum, the latter end of which had not yet been studied. These calculations are performed in the velocity gauge and directly address the components of the conductivity tensor. In the velocity gauge, the radiation field is represented by a power series in the vector potential, and we discuss a very efficient way of calculating its coefficients in the context of tight-binding models., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures

The speed and scale of the global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented pressures on health services worldwide, requiring new methods of service delivery during the health crisis. In the setting of severe resource constraint and high risk of infection to patients and clinicians, there is an urgent need to identify consensus statements on head and neck surgical oncology practice. We completed a modified Delphi consensus process of three rounds with 40 international experts in head and neck cancer surgical, radiation, and medical oncology, representing 35 international professional societies and national clinical trial groups. Endorsed by 39 societies and professional bodies, these consensus practice recommendations aim to decrease inconsistency of practice, reduce uncertainty in care, and provide reassurance for clinicians worldwide for head and neck surgical oncology in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the setting of acute severe resource constraint and high risk of infection to patients and staff.

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The determination of the primary energy of extensive air showers using the fluorescence detection technique requires an estimation of the energy carried away by particles that do not deposit all their energy in the atmosphere. This estimation is typically made using Monte Carlo simulations and thus depends on the assumed primary particle mass and on model predictions for neutrino and muon production. In this work we present a new method to obtain the invisible energy from events detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory. The method uses measurements of the muon number at ground level, and it allows us to reduce significantly the systematic uncertainties related to the mass composition and the high energy hadronic interaction models, and consequently to improve the estimation of the energy scale of the Observatory., Comment: Published version, 18 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

In this article, we perform a parameter study for a recently developed karst hydrological model. The study consists of a high-dimensional Bayesian inverse problem and a global sensitivity analysis. For the first time in karst hydrology, we use the active subspace method to find directions in the parameter space that dominate the Bayesian update from the prior to the posterior distribution in order to effectively reduce the dimension of the problem and for computational efficiency. Additionally, the calculated active subspace can be exploited to construct sensitivity metrics on each of the individual parameters and be used to construct a natural model surrogate. The model consists of 21 parameters to reproduce the hydrological behavior of spring discharge in a karst aquifer located in the Kerschbaum spring recharge area at Waidhofen a.d. Ybbs in Austria. The experimental spatial and time series data for the inference process were collected by the water works in Waidhofen. We show that this case study has implicit low-dimensionality, and we run an adjusted Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm in a low-dimensional subspace to construct samples of the posterior distribution. The results are visualized and verified by plots of the posterior's push-forward distribution displaying the uncertainty in predicting discharge values due to the experimental noise in the data. Finally, a discussion provides hydrological interpretation of these results for the Kerschbaum area., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; 5 pages supplementary information

Accelerating Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) by taking fewer measurements has the potential to reduce medical costs, minimize stress to patients and make MRI possible in applications where it is currently prohibitively slow or expensive. We introduce the fastMRI dataset, a large-scale collection of both raw MR measurements and clinical MR images, that can be used for training and evaluation of machine-learning approaches to MR image reconstruction. By introducing standardized evaluation criteria and a freely-accessible dataset, our goal is to help the community make rapid advances in the state of the art for MR image reconstruction. We also provide a self-contained introduction to MRI for machine learning researchers with no medical imaging background., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The profile of the longitudinal development of showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays carries information related to the interaction properties of the primary particles with atmospheric nuclei. In this work, we present the first measurement of the average shower profile in traversed atmospheric depth at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The shapes of profiles are well reproduced by the Gaisser-Hillas parametrization within the range studied, for E > 10^{17.8} eV. A detailed analysis of the systematic uncertainties is performed using 10 years of data and a full detector simulation. The average shape is quantified using two variables related to the width and asymmetry of the profile, and the results are compared with predictions of hadronic interaction models for different primary particles., Comment: Published version, 20 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

In this paper, we provide a new characterization of Keisler's order in terms of saturation of Boolean ultrapowers. To do so, we apply and expand the framework of 'separation of variables' recently developed by Malliaris and Shelah. We also show that good ultrafilters on Boolean algebras are precisely the ones which capture the maximum class in Keisler's order, answering a question posed by Benda in 1974.

This paper develops a comprehensive probabilistic setup to compute approximating functions in active subspaces. Constantine et al. proposed the active subspace method in (Constantine et al., 2014) to reduce the dimension of computational problems. It can be seen as an attempt to approximate a high-dimensional function of interest $f$ by a low-dimensional one. To do this, a common approach is to integrate $f$ over the inactive, i.e. non-dominant, directions with a suitable conditional density function. In practice, this can be done with a finite Monte Carlo sum, making not only the resulting approximation random in the inactive variable for each fixed input from the active subspace, but also its expectation, i.e. the integral of the low-dimensional function weighted with a probability measure on the active variable. In this regard we develop a fully probabilistic framework extending results from (Constantine et al., 2014, 2016). The results are supported by a simple numerical example., Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures

Physics - Geophysics - Abstract
Hydrological models of karst aquifers are often semi-distributed, and physical processes such as infiltration and spring discharge generation are described in a lumped way. Several works have previously addressed the problems associated with the calibration of such models, highlighting in particular the issue of model parameter estimation and model equifinality. In this work, we investigate the problem of model calibration using the active subspace (AS) method, a novel tool for model parameter dimension reduction. We apply the method to a newly proposed hydrological model for karst aquifers, LuKARS, to investigate if the AS framework identifies catchment-specific characteristics or if the results only depend on the chosen model structure. Therefore, we consider four different case studies, three synthetic and one real case (Kerschbaum springshed in Waidhofen a.d. Ybbs, Austria), with varying hydrotope distributions and properties. We find that both the hydrotope area coverage and the catchment characteristics have major impacts on parameter sensitivities. While model parameters are similarly informed in scenarios with less varying catchment characteristics, we find significant differences in parameter sensitivities when the applied hydrotopes were different from each other. Our results show that the AS method can be used to investigate the relation between the model structure, the area of a hydrotope, the physical properties of a catchment and the discharge data. Finally, we successfully effectively reduce the parameter dimensions of the LuKARS model for the Kerschbaum case study using the AS method. The model with reduced parameter dimensions is able to reproduce the observed impacts of land use changes in the Kerschbaum springshed, highlighting the robustness of the hydrotope-based modeling approach of LuKARS and its applicability for land use change impact studies in karstic systems.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present a detailed study of the large-scale anisotropies of cosmic rays with energies above 4 EeV measured using the Pierre Auger Observatory. For the energy bins [4,8] EeV and $E\geq 8$ EeV, the most significant signal is a dipolar modulation in right ascension at energies above 8 EeV, as previously reported. In this paper we further scrutinize the highest-energy bin by splitting it into three energy ranges. We find that the amplitude of the dipole increases with energy above 4 EeV. The growth can be fitted with a power law with index $\beta=0.79\pm 0.19$. The directions of the dipoles are consistent with an extragalactic origin of these anisotropies at all the energies considered. Additionally we have estimated the quadrupolar components of the anisotropy: they are not statistically significant. We discuss the results in the context of the predictions from different models for the distribution of ultrahigh-energy sources and cosmic magnetic fields., Comment: Published version, 16 pages, 7 figures, 8 tables

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
In this work, the demand Adjustment Problem (DAP) associated to urban traffic planning is studied. The framework for the formulation of the DAP is mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints. In particular, if the optimization program associated to the equilibrium constraints is considered, the DAP results in a bilevel optimization problem. In this approach the DAP via the Inexact Restoration method is treated.

Condensed Matter - Disordered Systems and Neural Networks - Abstract
We investigate the spectral function of Bloch states in an one-dimensional tight-binding non-interacting chain with two different models of static correlated disorder, at zero temperature. We report numerical calculations of the single-particle spectral function based on the Kernel Polynomial Method, which has an $\mathcal{O}(N)$ computational complexity. These results are then confirmed by analytical calculations, where precise conditions were obtained for the appearance of a classical limit in a single-band lattice system. Spatial correlations in the disordered potential give rise to non-perturbative spectral functions shaped as the probability distribution of the random on-site energies, even at low disorder strengths. In the case of disordered potentials with an algebraic power-spectrum, $\propto\left|k\right|^{-\alpha}$, we show that the spectral function is not self-averaging for $\alpha\geq1$., Comment: 27 Pages with 10 Figures

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
With the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we have observed the radio emission from 561 extensive air showers with zenith angles between 60$^\circ$ and 84$^\circ$. In contrast to air showers with more vertical incidence, these inclined air showers illuminate large ground areas of several km$^2$ with radio signals detectable in the 30 to 80\,MHz band. A comparison of the measured radio-signal amplitudes with Monte Carlo simulations of a subset of 50 events for which we reconstruct the energy using the Auger surface detector shows agreement within the uncertainties of the current analysis. As expected for forward-beamed radio emission undergoing no significant absorption or scattering in the atmosphere, the area illuminated by radio signals grows with the zenith angle of the air shower. Inclined air showers with EeV energies are thus measurable with sparse radio-antenna arrays with grid sizes of a km or more. This is particularly attractive as radio detection provides direct access to the energy in the electromagnetic cascade of an air shower, which in case of inclined air showers is not accessible by arrays of particle detectors on the ground., Comment: Published version, 14 pages, 12 figures

Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
The spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in the presence of a external magnetic field and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is studied by employing the usual mean-field approximation. The magnetic properties are obtained and it is shown that only second-order phase transitions take place for any values of the theoretical Hamiltonian parameters. Contrary to previous results from effective field theory, no anomalies have been observed at low temperatures. However, some re-entrancies still persist in some region of the phase diagram., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

How can a renormalization group fixed point be scale invariant without being conformal? Polchinski (1988) showed that this may happen if the theory contains a virial current -- a non-conserved vector operator of dimension exactly $(d-1)$, whose divergence expresses the trace of the stress tensor. We point out that this scenario can be probed via lattice Monte Carlo simulations, using the critical 3d Ising model as an example. Our results put a lower bound $\Delta_V>5.0$ on the scaling dimension of the lowest virial current candidate $V$, well above 2 expected for the true virial current. This implies that the critical 3d Ising model has no virial current, providing a structural explanation for the conformal invariance of the model., Comment: v2: 27pp; many explanations and some corrections added; Monte Carlo measurement reinterpreted as a lower bound; conclusions unchanged; v3: misprint in Eq. (2.5) corrected; v4: Eqs (1.4,1.5) and appendix B added, version to appear in JHEP; v5: Ref. [4] to 3d SAW conformal invariance added
