In a recent study entitled "Cell nuclei have lower refractive index and mass density than cytoplasm," we provided strong evidence indicating that the nuclear refractive index (RI) is lower than the RI of the cytoplasm for several cell lines. In a complementary study in 2017, entitled "Is the nuclear refractive index lower than cytoplasm? Validation of phase measurements and implications for light scattering technologies," Steelman et al. observed a lower nuclear RI also for other cell lines and ruled out methodological error sources such as phase wrapping and scattering effects. Recently, Yurkin composed a comment on these 2 publications, entitled "How a phase image of a cell with nucleus refractive index smaller than that of the cytoplasm should look like?," putting into question the methods used for measuring the cellular and nuclear RI in the aforementioned publications by suggesting that a lower nuclear RI would produce a characteristic dip in the measured phase profile in situ. We point out the difficulty of identifying this dip in the presence of other cell organelles, noise, or blurring due to the imaging point spread function. Furthermore, we mitigate Yurkin's concerns regarding the ability of the simple-transmission approximation to compare cellular and nuclear RI by analyzing a set of phase images with a novel, scattering-based approach. We conclude that the absence of a characteristic dip in the measured phase profiles does not contradict the usage of the simple-transmission approximation for the determination of the average cellular or nuclear RI. Our response can be regarded as an addition to the response by Steelman, Eldridge and Wax. We kindly ask the reader to attend to their thorough ascertainment prior to reading our response.

The total hip arthroplasty is one of the most common artificial joint replacement procedures. Several different surface coatings have been shown to improve implant fixation by facilitating bone ingrowth and consequently enhancing the longevity of uncemented orthopaedic hip prostheses. In the present study, two different layered double hydroxides (LDHs), Mg-Fe- and Mg-Al-LDH, were investigated as potential magnesium (Mg)-containing coating materials for orthopaedic applications in comparison to Mg hydroxide (Mg(OH)2). In vitro direct cell compatibility tests were carried out using the murine fibroblast cell line NIH 3T3 and the mouse osteosarcoma cell line MG 63. The host response of bone tissue was evaluated in in vivo experiments with nine rabbits. Two cylindrical pellets (3 × 3 mm) were implanted into each femoral condyle of the left hind leg. The samples were analyzed histologically and with μ-computed tomography (μ-CT) 6 weeks after surgery. An in vitro cytotoxicity test determined that more cells grew on the LDH pellets than on the Mg(OH)2-pellets. The pH value and the Mg2+ content of the cell culture media were increased after incubation of the cells on the degradable samples. The in vivo tests demonstrated the formation of fibrous capsules around Mg(OH)2 and Mg-Fe-LDH. In contrast, the host response of the Mg-Al-LDH samples indicated that this Mg-containing biomaterial is a potential candidate for implant coating. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Trotz jungster Fortschritte in der Strukturbestimmung von G-Protein-gekoppelten Rezeptoren (GPCR) gibt es nur wenige Daten zur Interaktion von GPCRs mit groseren Peptidliganden. In dieser Arbeit kombinieren wir Methoden der NMR-Spektroskopie, der molekularen Modellierung und der ortsgerichteten komplementaren Mutagenese und prasentieren ein Strukturmodell des Peptidhormons Neuropeptid Y (NPY) im Komplex mit seinem humanen G-Protein-gekoppelten Y2-Rezeptor (Y2R). Festkorper-NMR-Messungen von spezifisch isotopenmarkiertem NPY im Komplex mit in vitro gefaltetem und in Phospholipid-Bizellen rekonstituiertem Y2R liefern Daten zur bioaktiven Peptidstruktur. Unterstutzt von Losungs-NMR-Studien konnten Interaktionen des Liganden mit dem zweiten extrazellularen Loop des Rezeptors uber hydrophobe Kontakte nachgewiesen werden. Die C-terminale α-Helix von NPY, die sich in einer Membranumgebung in Abwesenheit des Rezeptors bildet, entfaltet sich ab T 32, um einen optimalen Kontakt tief in der Bindungstasche des transmembranen Bereichs des Y2R zu ermoglichen.

In this contribution, we report the thermal decomposition and thermo-X-ray diffraction analyses of a ZnII monomethyl terephthalate complex, [Zn(CH3O–CO–C6H4COO)2(OH2)3]·2H2O. Both XRD and temperature-dependent T-XRD patterns for the title compound in the thermal decomposition process (temperature range 30–300 °C) present diffraction peaks reminiscent of ordered, crystalline structure of the starting complex [Zn(CH3O–CO–C6H4COO)2(OH2)3]·2H2O. Crystallization and coordination water molecules of the title complex are eliminated in successive steps, and then the anhydrous complex decomposes to ZnO (the total experimental mass loss of 84.80 % versus the theoretical mass loss, 84.23 %). The formation of ZnO of wurtzite structure (hexagonal phase, space group P63 mc) as spherical nanoparticles with average size of 58 nm has been confirmed by XRD, SEM and EDX analyses performed on the final product.

Under anaerobic conditions, the reactions of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) acetate tetrahydrate with 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (H2L2, 3) in anhydrous acetonitrile afforded two tetranuclear metal(II) complexes [MII4(HL2)4(OAc)4] (4; MII = Co2+, Ni2+) with a [M4(μ3-O)4]4+ cubane core. X-ray structural analyses revealed that both MII cubanes 4a·2CH3OH and 4b·2CH3OH are isostructural and crystallize in the tetragonal space group I41/acd with eight molecules in the unit cell. In the solid state, the orientation of the cubane cores of 4 and the formation of a 3D framework were controlled by π–π interactions as well as intra- and intermolecular O–H···O hydrogen bonds. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that the cubanes 4 show a ferrimagnetic coupling scheme that leads to a diamagnetic ground state for both complexes. Core-level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the Co and Ni ions in 4a and 4b are in a divalent state. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism was performed to extract the spin and orbital contributions to the Co and Ni magnetic moments. We compared the experimental results of the local electronic structures around the Co2+ ions in 4a and the Ni2+ ions in 4b with charge-transfer multiplet simulations.

Real-time deformability (RT-DC) is a method for high-throughput mechanical and morphological phenotyping of cells in suspension. While analysis rates exceeding 1000 cells per second allow for a label-free characterization of complex biological samples, e.g., whole blood, data evaluation has so far been limited to a few geometrical and material parameters such as cell size, deformation, and elastic Young's modulus. But as a microscopy-based technology, RT-DC actually generates and yields multidimensional datasets that require automated and unbiased tools to obtain morphological and rheological cell information. Here, we present a statistical framework to shed light on this complex parameter space and to extract quantitative results under various experimental conditions. As model systems, we apply cell lines as well as primary cells and highlight more than 11 parameters that can be obtained from RT- DC data. These parameters are used to identify sub-populations in heterogeneous samples using Gaussian mixture models, to perform a dimensionality reduction using principal component analysis, and to quantify the statistical significance applying linear mixed models to datasets of multiple replicates. Optical diffraction tomography (ODT) is a tomographic technique that can be used to measure the three-dimensional (3D) refractive index distribution within living cells without the requirement of any marker. In principle, ODT can be regarded as a generalization of optical projection tomography which is equivalent to computerized tomography (CT). Both optical tomographic techniques require projection-phase images of cells measured at multiple angles. However, the reconstruction of the 3D refractive index distribution post-measurement differs for the two techniques. It is known that ODT yields better results than projection tomography, because it takes into account diffraction of the imaging light due to the refractive index structure of the sample. Here, we apply ODT to biological cells in a microfluidic chip which combines optical trapping and microfluidic flow to achieve an optofluidic single-cell rotation. In particular, we address the problem that arises when the trapped cell is not rotating about an axis perpendicular to the imaging plane, but instead about an arbitrarily tilted axis. The massively parallel nature of biological information processing plays an important role for its superiority to human-engineered computing devices. In particular, it may hold the key to overcoming the von Neumann bottleneck that limits contemporary computer architectures. Physical-model neuromorphic devices seek to replicate not only this inherent parallelism, but also aspects of its microscopic dynamics in analog circuits emulating neurons and synapses. However, these machines require network models that are not only adept at solving particular tasks, but that can also cope with the inherent imperfections of analog substrates. We present a spiking network model that performs Bayesian inference through sampling on the BrainScaleS neuromorphic platform, where we use it for generative and discriminative computations on visual data. By illustrating its functionality on this platform, we implicitly demonstrate its robustness to various substrate-specific distortive effects, as well as its accelerated capability for computation. These results showcase the advantages of brain-inspired physical computation and provide important building blocks for large-scale neuromorphic applications., Comment: This preprint has been published 2019 November 14. Here we describe a multi-compartment neuron circuit based on the Adaptive-Exponential I&F (AdEx) model, developed for the second-generation BrainScaleS hardware. Based on an existing modular Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) architecture designed in 65 nm CMOS, the circuit features exponential spike generation, neuronal adaptation, inter-compartmental connections as well as a conductance-based reset. The design reproduces a diverse set of firing patterns observed in cortical pyramidal neurons. Further, it enables the emulation of sodium and calcium spikes, as well as N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) plateau potentials known from apical and thin dendrites. We characterize the AdEx circuit extensions and exemplify how the interplay between passive and non-linear active signal processing enhances the computational capabilities of single (but structured) on-chip neurons., 11 pages, 17 figures (including author photographs)

Here we present analog circuits emulating an Adaptive Exponential I&F (AdEx) neuron model developed for our second generation 65-nm CMOS neuromorphic hardware. Designed for an existing accelerated Leaky Integrate and Fire (LIF) circuit, the modular circuit architecture allows us to switch between LIF and AdEx neuron models and further to multiple-compartments. We describe our circuit implementation and the simulation results for adaptation and exponential sub-circuits. The neuron circuit specifications are compared with a targeted set of computational models. We show how addition of analog AdEx circuits let us qualitatively reproduce spike patterns known from cortical neurons.

The mechanical properties of biological tissues are increasingly recognized as important factors in developmental and pathological processes. Most existing mechanical measurement techniques either necessitate destruction of the tissue for access or provide insufficient spatial resolution. Here, we show for the first time a systematic application of confocal Brillouin microscopy to quantitatively map the mechanical properties of spinal cord tissues during biologically relevant processes in a contact-free and non-destructive manner. Living zebrafish larvae were mechanically imaged in all anatomical planes, during development and after spinal cord injury. These experiments revealed that Brillouin microscopy is capable of detecting the mechanical properties of distinct anatomical structures without interfering with the animal’s natural development. The Brillouin shift within the spinal cord increased during development and transiently decreased during the repair processes following spinal cord transection. By taking into account the refractive index distribution, we explicitly determined the apparent longitudinal modulus and viscosity of different larval zebrafish tissues. Importantly, mechanical properties differed between tissues in situ and in excised slices. The presented work constitutes the first step towards an in vivo assessment of spinal cord tissue mechanics during regeneration, provides a methodical basis to identify key determinants of mechanical tissue properties and allows to test their relative importance in combination with biochemical and genetic factors during developmental and regenerative processes.

This paper presents an extension of the BrainScaleS accelerated analog neuromorphic hardware model. The scalable neuromorphic architecture is extended by the support for multi-compartment models and non-linear dendrites. These features are part of a \SI{65}{\nano\meter} prototype ASIC. It allows to emulate different spike types observed in cortical pyramidal neurons: NMDA plateau potentials, calcium and sodium spikes. By replicating some of the structures of these cells, they can be configured to perform coincidence detection within a single neuron. Built-in plasticity mechanisms can modify not only the synaptic weights, but also the dendritic synaptic composition to efficiently train large multi-compartment neurons. Emulating spiking neural networks on analog neuromorphic hardware offers several advantages over simulating them on conventional computers, particularly in terms of speed and energy consumption. However, this usually comes at the cost of reduced control over the dynamics of the emulated networks. In this paper, we demonstrate how iterative training of a hardware-emulated network can compensate for anomalies induced by the analog substrate. We first convert a deep neural network trained in software to a spiking network on the BrainScaleS wafer-scale neuromorphic system, thereby enabling an acceleration factor of 10 000 compared to the biological time domain. This mapping is followed by the in-the-loop training, where in each training step, the network activity is first recorded in hardware and then used to compute the parameter updates in software via backpropagation. An essential finding is that the parameter updates do not have to be precise, but only need to approximately follow the correct gradient, which simplifies the computation of updates. Using this approach, after only several tens of iterations, the spiking network shows an accuracy close to the ideal software-emulated prototype. Functionalization of the PNP pincer ligand backbone allows for a comparison of the dialkyl amido, vinyl alkyl amido, and divinyl amido ruthenium(II) pincer complex series [RuCl{N(CH2 CH2 PtBu2 )2 }], [RuCl{N(CHCHPtBu2 )(CH2 CH2 PtBu2 )}], and [RuCl{N(CHCHPtBu2 )2 }], in which the ruthenium(II) ions are in the extremely rare square-planar coordination geometry. Whereas the dialkylamido complex adopts an electronic singlet (S=0) ground state and energetically low-lying triplet (S=1) state, the vinyl alkyl amido and the divinyl amido complexes exhibit unusual triplet (S=1) ground states as confirmed by experimental and computational examination. However, essentially non-magnetic ground states arise for the two intermediate-spin complexes owing to unusually large zero-field splitting (D>+200 cm(-1) ). The change in ground state electronic configuration is attributed to tailored pincer ligand-to-metal π-donation within the PNP ligand series.

The tumor suppressor protein programmed cell death 4 (Pdcd4) has been implicated in the translational regulation of specific mRNAs, however, the identities of the natural Pdcd4 target mRNAs and the mechanisms by which Pdcd4 affects their translation are not well understood. Pdcd4 binds to the eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF4A and inhibits its helicase activity, which has suggested that Pdcd4 suppresses translation initiation of mRNAs containing structured 5′-untranslated regions. Recent work has revealed a second inhibitory mechanism, which is eIF4A-independent and involves direct RNA-binding of Pdcd4 to the target mRNAs. We have now identified the poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) as a novel direct interaction partner of Pdcd4. The ability to interact with PABP is shared between human and Drosophila Pdcd4, indicating that it has been highly conserved during evolution. Mutants of Pdcd4 that have lost the ability to interact with PABP fail to stably associate with ribosomal complexes in sucrose density gradients and to suppress translation, as exemplified by c-myb mRNA. Overall, our work identifies PABP as a novel functionally relevant Pdcd4 interaction partner that contributes to the regulation of translation by Pdcd4.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with a mixed phase composition (γ-Fe2O3)(1-x)(Fe3O4)x and sizes between 9 and 20 nm were synthesized via coprecipitation and were either left uncoated or subsequently surface-stabilized with citrate or malate anions. The sizes, morphology, surface chemistry, and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device measurements, respectively. Cellular uptake and intracellular distribution in normal tissue and tumor cells were verified by TEM images. X-ray-induced changes of the oxidation state and site geometries of surface iron ions of uncoated and citrate-coated SPIONs were explored by collecting Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy data. The potential applicability of citrate- and malate-coated SPIONs as an X-ray enhancer for radiation cancer therapy was substantiated by their drastic enhancement of the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in X-ray irradiated tumor cells.

A decanuclear cobalt(II) phosphonate, [Co10{2,3,5,6-(Me)4C6HCH2PO3}8{2,3,5,6-(Me)4C6HCH2PO3H}4Cl6]·6Et3NH·10n-hexane·16H2O (1) with a planar arrangement of the CoII ions is described. This compound shows slow relaxation of its dynamic magnetization.

Graphene oxide can be used as a precursor to graphene, but the quality of graphene flakes is highly heterogeneous. Scanning Raman microscopy (SRM) is used to characterize films of graphene derived from flakes of graphene oxide with an almost intact carbon framework (ai-GO). The defect density of these flakes is visualized in detail by analyzing the intensity and full width at half-maximum of the most pronounced Raman peaks. In addition, we superimpose the SRM results with AFM images and correlate the spectroscopic results with the morphology. Furthermore, we use the SRM technique to display the amount of defects in a film of graphene. Thus, an area of 250 × 250 μm2 of graphene is probed with a step-size increment of 1 μm. We are able to visualize the position of graphene flakes, edges and the substrate. Finally, we alter parameters of measurement to analyze the quality of graphene in a fast and reliable way. The described method can be used to probe and visualize the quality of graphene films.

In spite of the recent success in crystallizing several G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), a comprehensive biophysical characterization of these molecules under physiological conditions also requires the study of the molecular dynamics of these proteins. The molecular mobility of the human neuropeptide Y receptor type 2 reconstituted into dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) membranes was investigated by means of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Static (15) N NMR spectra show that the receptor performs axially symmetric motions in the membrane, and several residues undergo large amplitude fluctuations. This was confirmed by quantitative measurements of the motional (1) H,(13) C order parameter of the CH, CH2 , and CH3 groups. In directly polarized (13) C NMR experiments, these order parameters showed astonishingly low values of SCH =0.55, S CH 2=0.33, and S CH 3=0.17, which corresponds to segmental amplitudes of approximately 50° in the backbone and approximately 50-60° in the side chain. At physiological temperature, (2) H NMR spectra of the deuterated receptor showed a narrow component that is indicative of molecular order parameters of S≤0.3 superimposed with a very broad spectrum that could stem from the transmembrane α-helices. These results suggest that the crystal structures of GPCRs only represent a static snapshot of these highly mobile molecules, which undergo significant structural fluctuations with relatively large amplitudes in a liquid-crystalline membrane at physiological temperature.

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals call for affordable, clean energy. The efficient use of biogenic residues offers various means of promoting that goal. Key questions, however, are which biomasses are available to what extent, and what additional contribution can be expected from improved use. Answering these questions require cross-sectoral, regular and consistent information on the available resources. A comprehensive, continuously applicable measuring instrument for this task does not yet exist. To fill this gap, a monitoring system was developed which is able to quantify the resource base annually, is easy to update and can be used internationally. Using Germany as a case study, a review was carried out for 77 biomasses from five different sectors. The result is a network of 1,113 calculation elements, which forms the basis for an automatic data processing. Based on that, Germany's supply of technically usable biogenic residues was determined to 86–140 million Mg (DM) in 2015. Between 66% and 84% of this amount already has an established use, while the potential which can still be mobilised is in the range of 14–48 million Mg (DM). If this amount were provided as e.g. biomethane, the amount of final energy coming from renewable sources in Germany could thus be increased by up to 18%. Just four biomasses bear the main responsibility for this figure. The monitoring system is able to prioritise areas for action and can provide crucial support in the development of policy and business strategies for the future use of residues.

Mutually perpendicular hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds and stacking interactions are investigated in the seemingly simple crystal structure of bromomalonic aldehyde (C3H3O2Br). This combined experimental and theoretical study sheds new light on the role of electrostatic interactions in molecular crystalline networks and poses a caveat to look beyond what may be termed “chemical intuition”.

The reaction between Ln(III) chloride and NiCl2·4H2O salts in presence of a multidentate sterically unencumbered ligand, (E)-2,2'-(2-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxyphenylimino)methyl)-5-methylbenzylazanediyl)diethanol (LH4) leads to the synthesis of four isostructural pentanuclear hetereometallic complexes [Ni2Dy3(LH)4]Cl (1), [Ni2Gd3(LH)4]Cl (2), [Ni2Tb3(LH)3(LH2)]Cl2 (3), [Ni2 Ho3 (LH)3 (LH2)]Cl2 (4) with unprecedented topology. Here the two compounds 1 are 2 are monocationic and crystallize in chiral space group, P2(1)2(1)2(1) whereas compounds 3 and 4 are dicationic and crystallize in achiral space group P2(1)/n. The total metal framework, {Ni2Ln3} unit is held by four triply deprotonated ligands [LH](3-) in 1 and 2 whereas in case of 3 and 4 three triply deprotonated [LH](3-) and one doubly deprotonated [LH2](2-) ligands are involved. In these complexes both the lanthanide ions and the nickel(II) ions are doubly bridged and the bridging is composed of oxygen atoms derived from either phenolate or ethoxide groups. The analysis of SQUID measurements reveal a high magnetic ground state and a slow relaxation of the magnetization with two relaxation regimes for 1. For the thermally activated regime we found an effective energy barrier of U(eff) = 85 K. Micro Hall probe loop measurements directly proof the single-molecule magnet (SMM) nature of 1 with a blocking temperature of T(B) = 3 K and an open hysteresis for sweep rates faster than 50 mT/s.

A method for manufacturing a probe for a combined scanning tunneling and atomic-force microscope on the basis of a quartz tuning fork with a metal tip, which is equipped with an independent conductor, is described. The magnetic structure of Co(NCNH)₂ has been studied by neutron diffraction data below 10 K using the SPODI and DNS instruments at FRM II, Munich. There is an intensity change in the (1 1 0) and (0 2 0) reflections around 4 K, to be attributed to the onset of a magnetic ordering of the Co²⁺ spins. Four different spin orientations have been evaluated on the basis of Rietveld refinements, comprising antiferromagnetic as well as ferromagnetic ordering along all three crystallographic axes. Both residual values and supplementary susceptibility measurements evidence that only a ferromagnetic ordering with all Co²⁺ spins parallel to the c axis is a suitable description of the low-temperature magnetic ground state of Co(NCNH)₂. The deviation of the magnetic moment derived by the Rietveld refinement from the expectancy value may be explained either by an incomplete saturation of the moment at temperatures slightly below the Curie temperature or by a small Jahn–Teller distortion. - Graphical abstract: The magnetic ground state of Co(NCNH)₂ has been clarified by (spin-polarized) neutron diffraction data at low temperatures. Purpose Nowadays, research in magnesium alloys as a biodegradable implant material has increased. The aim of this study was to examine osteoinductive properties and tissue responses to pure magnesium in comparison to conventional permanent (titanium) and to degradable (glyconate) implant materials. Methods Magnesium wires (0.4 mm in diameter, 10 mm length) were implanted into tail veins of mice and examined after 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 weeks. Titanium and glyconate as controls were assessed after 2, 4, 8 and 24 weeks. μ-computed tompgraphy, histology and SEM examinations were performed. Results Magnesium implants showed increasing structural losses over time with fragmentation after an observation period of 32 weeks. Glyconate was fully degraded and titanium remained almost unaffected after 24 weeks. In contrast to some titanium and glyconate implants, first calcium and phosphate precipitations could be observed around magnesium implants after two weeks. However, ossification could not be observed even after 32 weeks, whereas enchondral ossification was found partially in the sourrounding of glyconate and titanium implants after eight weeks. Nevertheless, magnesium implants showed less inflammatory responses and fibrosing properties than the conventional implant materials. Conclusions Although the assumed osteoinductive properties could not be detected, magnesium appears to be a promising degradable implant material because of the low sensitizing and inflammatory potential.

Despite being originally inspired by the central nervous system, artificial neural networks have diverged from their biological archetypes as they have been remodeled to fit particular tasks. In this paper, we review several possibilites to reverse map these architectures to biologically more realistic spiking networks with the aim of emulating them on fast, low-power neuromorphic hardware. Since many of these devices employ analog components, which cannot be perfectly controlled, finding ways to compensate for the resulting effects represents a key challenge. Here, we discuss three different strategies to address this problem: the addition of auxiliary network components for stabilizing activity, the utilization of inherently robust architectures and a training method for hardware-emulated networks that functions without perfect knowledge of the system's dynamics and parameters. A direct assessment of contaminant concentrations in biota with respect to their biological relevance or importance for the ecosystem is rarely possible. Statistically derived reference values can serve as a guide to classify measured tissue concentrations, but they do not provide any information on the biological significance of the contaminant concentrations. However, previously such reference values did not exist for environmental-biomonitoring. Based on analytical data from muscle tissue of bream ( Abramis brama ) of the German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB), we present a method on how to derive dynamic reference values. These show the general state of inland surface water pollution in Germany at a certain time. The reference values allow for classification of measured contaminant concentrations in muscle tissue of bream. This classification enables a comparative assessment in means of how the actual state of pollution in a specific ecosystem is, compared to the general, macro state of pollution.

This microreview highlights recent techniques used to determine the spin state at or around room temperature in nanoscale objects composed of iron(II) spin-crossover complexes. Complexes have been studied in the form of thin films, nanoparticles, single molecules or oligomolecular aggregates. Three approaches are presented: Surface plasmon polariton resonance in films on Ti/Au substrates, the determination of single-particle current–voltage characteristics between gold electrodes, and current-imaging tunnelling spectroscopy performed on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite-adsorbed strings of oligonuclear, bead-like complex aggregates.

Magnesium alloys have been investigated in different fields of medicine and represent a promising biomaterial for implants due to characteristics like bioabsorbability and osteoinduction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usability of magnesium as implant material in middle ear surgery. Magnesium implants were placed into the right middle ear of eighteen New Zealand White rabbits. Nine animals were euthanized after four weeks and nine animals after three month. The petrous bones were removed and embedded in epoxy resin. The specimens were then polished, stained and evaluated with the aid of a light microscope. The histological examination revealed a good biocompatibility. After four weeks, a beginning corrosion of the implant’s surface and low amount of trabecular bone formation in the area of the stapes base plate was observed. A considerable degradation of implants and obvious bone formation was found three month after implantation. The magnesium alloy used in the present study partly corroded too fast, so that a complete bone reconstruction could not be established in time. The increased osteoinduction on the stapes base plate resulted in a tight bone-implant bonding. Thus, a promising application of magnesium could be a coating of biomaterials in order to improve the bony integration of implants.

Software-defined network/ing (SDN) is a novel configuration technique that has the potential to become the future backbone of computer networking. In contrast to conventional networking techniques, SDN utilizes controller elements to configure groups of networking nodes, resulting in a hierarchy. SDNs have to be simulated and analyzed to identify applicable configuration settings for real world applications. To determine the quality of a SDN configuration, its packet flow is an important indicator for the analysis. This work presents an interactive system for the analysis of SDN data. An intuitive overview of the SDN hierarchy and the underlying packet flow is provided. The ability to track packets through the SDN and to interlink multiple views of the SDN forms an interactive analysis tool that is successfully applied to a simulated SDN dataset.

Thermal properties of solid-state materials are a fundamental topic of study with important practical implications. For example, anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs) are routinely used in physics, chemistry, and crystallography to quantify the thermal motion of atoms in crystals. ADPs are commonly derived from diffraction experiments, but recent developments have also enabled their first-principles prediction using periodic density functional theory (DFT). Here, we combine experiments and dispersion-corrected DFT to quantify lattice thermal expansion and ADPs in crystalline {\alpha}-sulfur (S8), a prototypical elemental solid that is controlled by the interplay of covalent and van der Waals interactions. We first report on single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements that provide new and improved reference data from 10 K up to room temperature. We then use several popular dispersion-corrected DFT methods to predict vibrational and thermal properties of {\alpha}-sulfur, including the anisotropic lattice thermal expansion. Hereafter, ADPs are derived in the commonly used harmonic approximation (in the computed zero-Kelvin structure) and also in the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) which takes the predicted lattice thermal expansion into account. At the PBE+D3(BJ) level, the latter leads to excellent agreement with experiments. Finally, more general implications of this study for realistic materials modeling at finite temperature are discussed.
