We present results of a blind 21cm HI-line imaging survey of a galaxy overdensity located behind the Milky Way at $\ell,b$ $\approx$ 160 deg, 0.5 deg. The overdensity corresponds to a Zone-of-Avoidance crossing of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster filament. Although it is known that this filament contains an X-ray galaxy cluster (3C129) hosting two strong radio galaxies, little is known about galaxies associated with this potentially rich cluster because of the high Galactic dust extinction. We mapped a sky area of $\sim$9.6 sq.deg using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in a hexagonal mosaic of 35 pointings observed for 12 hours each, in the radial velocity range $cz = 2400 - 16600$ km/s. The survey has a sensitivity of 0.36 mJy/beam rms at a velocity resolution of 16.5 km/s. We detected 211 galaxies, 62% of which have a near-infrared counterpart in the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey. We present a catalogue of the HI properties and an HI atlas containing total intensity maps, position-velocity diagrams, global HI profiles and UKIDSS counterpart images. For the resolved galaxies we also present HI velocity fields and radial HI surface density profiles. A brief analysis of the structures outlined by these galaxies finds that 87 of them lie at the distance of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster ($cz \sim 4000 - 8000$ km/s) and seem to form part of the 3C129 cluster. Further 72 detections trace an overdensity at a velocity of $cz \approx$ 10000 km/s and seem to coincide with a structure predicted from mass density reconstructions in the first 2MASS Redshift Survey., 28 pages, 18 figures, 6 Tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a catalogue of 261 new infrared selected members of the 3C129 galaxy cluster. The cluster, located at $z \approx$ 0.02, forms part of the Perseus-Pisces filament and is obscured at optical wavelengths due to its location in the zone of avoidance. We identified these galaxies using the $J-$ and $K-$band imaging data provided by the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey within an area with a radius of $1.1^{\circ}$ centred on the X-ray emission of the cluster at $\ell, b \approx 160.52^{\circ}, 0.27^{\circ}$. A total of 26 of the identified galaxy members have known redshifts 24 of which are from our 2016 Westerbork HI survey and two are from optical spectroscopy. An analysis of the galaxy density at the core of the 3C129 cluster shows it to be less dense than the Coma and Norma clusters, but comparable to the galaxy density in the core of the Perseus cluster. From an assessment of the spatial and velocity distributions of the 3C129 cluster galaxies that have redshifts, we derived a velocity of $cz = 5227 \pm 171$ km/s and $\sigma = 1097 \pm 252$ km/s for the main cluster, with a substructure in the cluster outskirts at $cz = 6923 \pm 71$ km/s with $\sigma = 422 \pm 100$ km/s. We present observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope of the nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxy KKH 22 = LEDA 2807114 in the vicinity of the massive spiral galaxy IC 342. We derived its distance of 3.12+-0.19 Mpc using the tip of red giant branch (TRGB) method. We also used the 6 m BTA spectroscopy to measure a heliocentric radial velocity of the globular cluster in KKH22 to be +30+-10 km/s. The dSph galaxy KKH 22 has the V-band absolute magnitude of -12.19 mag and the central surface brightness mu_v,0 = 24.1 mag/sq.arcsec. Both the velocity and the distance of KKH 22 are consistent with the dSph galaxy being gravitationally bound to IC 342. Another nearby dIr galaxy, KKH 34, with a low heliocentric velocity of +106 km/s has the TRGB distance of 7.28+-0.36 Mpc residing in the background with respect to the IC 342 group. We present a measurement of the Hubble constant made using geometric distance measurements to megamaser-hosting galaxies. We have applied an improved approach for fitting maser data and obtained better distance estimates for four galaxies previously published by the Megamaser Cosmology Project: UGC 3789, NGC 6264, NGC 6323, and NGC 5765b. Combining these updated distance measurements with those for the maser galaxies CGCG 074-064 and NGC 4258, and assuming a fixed velocity uncertainty of 250 km s$^{-1}$ associated with peculiar motions, we constrain the Hubble constant to be $H_0 = 73.9 \pm 3.0$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ independent of distance ladders and the cosmic microwave background. This best value relies solely on maser-based distance and velocity measurements, and it does not use any peculiar velocity corrections. Different approaches for correcting peculiar velocities do not modify $H_0$ by more than ${\pm}1{\sigma}$, with the full range of best-fit Hubble constant values spanning 71.8-76.9 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. We corroborate prior indications that the local value of $H_0$ exceeds the early-Universe value, with a confidence level varying from 95-99% for different treatments of the peculiar velocities., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJL

The kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) and polarized Sunyaev Zel'dovich (pSZ) effects are temperature and polarization anisotropies induced by the scattering of CMB photons from structure in the post-reionization Universe. In the case of the kSZ effect, small angular scale anisotropies in the optical depth are modulated by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole field, i.e. the CMB dipole observed at each spacetime point, which is sourced by the primordial dipole and especially the local peculiar velocity. In the case of the pSZ effect, similar small-scale anisotropies are modulated by the CMB quadrupole field, which receives contributions from both scalar and tensor modes. Statistical anisotropies in the cross correlations of CMB temperature and polarization with tracers of the inhomogeneous distribution of electrons provide a means of isolating and reconstructing the dipole and quadrupole fields. In this paper, we present a set of unbiased minimum variance quadratic estimators for the reconstruction of the dipole and quadrupole fields, and forecast the ability of future CMB experiments and large scale structure surveys to perform this reconstruction. Consistent with previous work, we find that a high fidelity reconstruction of the dipole and quadrupole fields over a variety of scales is indeed possible, and demonstrate the sensitivity of the pSZ effect to primordial tensor modes. Using a principle component analysis, we estimate how many independent modes could be accessed in such a reconstruction. We also comment on a few first applications of a detection of the dipole and quadrupole fields, including a reconstruction of the primordial contribution to our locally observed CMB dipole, a test of statistical homogeneity on large scales from the first modes of the quadrupole field, and a reconstruction technique for the primordial potential on the largest scales., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, minor changes

Motions of galaxies in the universe are due to the rivalry between the expansion of the universe and gravitation. This tug-of-war impacts the formation and the growth of large scale structures of the universe. Thus, depending on the identity of the winner of this duel, the universe is more or less compact. Within this context, this PhD thesis is divided into three parts, spanning from HI observations to the estimate of the growth of rate of large scale structures of the universe and the compactness of the local universe.The Cosmicflows collaboration assembles catalogues of galaxy distances. Up to now, three catalogues have been published, the last one being Cosmicflows-3. This thesis presents and analyses observational data obtained from HI observations. These new data will be used to construct the new compilation of distances Cosmicflows-4 by the use of the Tully-Fisher relation, in order to correct the lack of data in the Northern celestial hemisphere in the current catalog.From the distance of a galaxy, one can derive the radial part of its peculiar velocity corresponding to the component of its total velocity caused by gravitation. Peculiar velocities allow to probe the matter content of the universe and to extract information on large scale structures of the universe. Two methodologies using peculiar velocities have been developed during this thesis to characterize large scale structures of the local universe.On the one hand, peculiar velocity catalogues can be used to reconstruct tri-dimensional velocity fields. These velocity field allow one to map the structure of the local universe and are used in this thesis to identify gravitational basins and valleys within the local universe by computing streamlines.On the other hand, a method based on the analysis of two-point galaxy peculiar velocity correlations has been developed in order to constrain the growth rate of large scale structures of the local universe from observational data. This method is applied to the Cosmicflows-3 catalogue of observed peculiar velocities; Les mouvements des galaxies dans l'Univers sont causés par le tir à la corde qui a lieu entre l'expansion de l'univers et la gravitation. Cette rivalité a un impact sur la formation et la croissance des grandes structures de l'univers. Par conséquent, l'univers est plus ou moins compact selon le gagnant de ce duel. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse est divisée en trois parties, allant des observations à 21 cm à la mesure du taux de croissance actuel des grandes structures de l'univers et de la compacité de l'univers local.La collaboration Cosmicflows prépare des catalogues de distances de galaxies. The recent discovery of gravitational waves marks the culmination of a sequence of successful tests of the general theory of relativity (GR) since its formulation in 1915. Yet these tests remain confined to the scale of stellar systems or the strong gravity regime. A departure from GR on larger, cosmological scales has been advocated by the proponents of modified gravity theories as an alternative to the Cosmological Constant to account for the observed cosmic expansion history. While indistinguishable in these terms by construction, such models on the other hand yield distinct values for the linear growth rate of density perturbations and, as a consequence, for the associated galaxy peculiar velocity field. Measurements of the resulting anisotropy of galaxy clustering, when spectroscopic redshifts are used to derive distances, have thus been proposed as a powerful probe of the validity of GR on cosmological scales. However, despite significant effort in modelling such redshift space distortions, systematic errors remain comparable to current statistical uncertainties. Here, we present the results of a different forward-modelling approach, which fully exploits the sensitivity of the galaxy velocity field to modifications of GR. We use state-of-the-art, high-resolution N-body simulations of a standard GR and a compelling f(R) model, one of GR's simplest variants, to build simulated catalogues of stellar-mass-selected galaxies through a robust match to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey observations. We find that, well within the uncertainty of this technique, f(R) fails to reproduce the observed redshift-space clustering on scales 1-10 Mpc/h. Instead, the standard LCDM GR model agrees impressively well with the data. This result provides a strong confirmation, on cosmological scales, of the robustness of Einstein's general theory of relativity., 35 Pages, 8 figures. Published in Nature Astronomy. Radial velocities of 1726 candidate B- and A-type stars within 3deg of the Galactic center (GC) were estimated from FLAMES/VLT spectra in the range of 396-457 nm. The final sample was limited to 1507 stars with either Gaia DR2 parallaxes or main-sequence B-type stars having reliable spectroscopic distances. The solar peculiar motion in the direction of the GC relative to the local standard of rest (LSR) was estimated to Uo = 10.7+-1.3 km/s. The variation in the median radial velocity relative to the LSR as a function of distance from the sun shows a gradual increase from slightly negative values near the sun to almost 5 km/s at a distance of around 4 kpc. A sinusoidal function with an amplitude of 3.4+-1.3 km/s and a maximum at 4.0+-0.6 kpc inside the sun is the best fit to the data. A positive median radial velocity relative to the LSR around 1.8 kpc, the expected distance to the Sagittarius arm, can be excluded at a 99% level of confidence. A marginal peak detected at this distance may be associated with stellar streams in the star-forming regions, but it is too narrow to be associated with a major arm feature. A comparison with test-particle simulations in a fixed galactic potential with an imposed spiral pattern shows the best agreement with a two-armed spiral potential having the Scutum-Crux arm as the next major inner arm. A relative radial forcing of ~1.5% and a pattern speed in the range of 20-30 km/s/kpc yield the best fit. The lack of a positive velocity perturbation in the region around the Sagittarius arm excludes it from being a major arm. Thus, the main spiral potential of the Galaxy is two-armed, while the Sagittarius arm is an inter-arm feature with only a small mass perturbation associated with it., 10 pages, 8 figures

Peculiar velocities are a precious tool to study the large-scale distribution of matter in the local universe and test cosmological models. However, present measurements of peculiar velocities are based on empirical distance indicators, which introduce large error bars. Here we present a new method to measure the peculiar velocities, by directly estimating luminosity distances through waveform signals from inspiralling compact binaries and measuring redshifts from electromagnetic (EM) counterparts. In the future, with the distance uncertainty of GW events reducing to $0.1$ per cent by future GW detectors, the uncertainty of the peculiar velocity can be reduced to $10$ km/s at 100 mega parsecs. We find that dozens of GW events with EM counterparts can provide a Hubble constant $H_0$ uncertainty of $0.5\%$ and the growth rate of structure with a $0.6\%$ precision in the third-generation ground-base GW detectors, which can reconcile the $H_0$ tension and determine the origins for cosmic accelerated expansion., 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The mapping of galaxy clustering from real space to redshift space introduces the anisotropic property to the measured galaxy density power spectrum in redshift space, known as the redshift space distortion (RSD) effect. The mapping formula is intrinsically non-linear, which is complicated by the higher order polynomials due to indefinite orders of cross correlations between density and velocity fields, and the Finger--of--God (FoG) effect due to the randomness of the galaxy peculiar velocity field. In previous works, we have verified the robustness of advanced TNS mapping formula in our hybrid RSD model in dark matter case, where the halo bias models are not taken into account for the halo mapping formula in redshift space. Using 100 realizations of halo catalogs in N-body simulations, we find that our halo RSD model with the known halo bias model and the effective FoG function accurately predicts the halo power spectrum measurements, within 1$\sim$2% accuracy up to $k\sim 0.2h$/Mpc, depending on different halo masses and redshifts., 33 pages, 12 figures. H$_2$O megamasers residing in the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGN) exhibit Keplerian rotation about the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Such disk maser systems are excellent tools for diagnosing the kinematic status of the SMBH, and they currently provide the only direct and unambiguous measure of SMBH velocities outside of the Milky Way. We have measured the galaxy recession velocities for a sample of 10 maser disk systems using a combination of spatially resolved HI disk modeling, spatially integrated HI profile fitting, and optical spectral line and continuum fitting. In comparing the SMBH velocities to those of their host galaxies, we find two (out of 10) systems -- J0437+2456 and NGC 6264 -- for which the SMBH and galaxy velocities show a statistically significant ($>$3$\sigma$) difference. For NGC 6264 the apparent velocity offset can likely be explained by ionized gas motion within the host galaxy (e.g., from AGN-driven shocks). The velocity measurements for J0437+2456, however, imply a SMBH peculiar velocity of $69.6 \pm 12.7$ km s$^{-1}$ (5.5$\sigma$). We thus consider J0437+2456 to be a promising candidate for hosting either a recoiling or binary SMBH, though additional observations are necessary to exclude the possibility of a systematic offset between the galactic recession velocity and that measured using the optical spectrum., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Galaxy clusters are excellent cosmological probes provided that their formation and evolution within the large scale environment are precisely understood. Therefore studies with simulated galaxy clusters have flourished. However detailed comparisons between simulated and observed clusters and their population - the galaxies - are complicated by the diversity of clusters and their surrounding environment. An original way initiated by Bertschinger as early as 1987, to legitimize the one-to-one comparison exercise down to the details, is to produce simulations constrained to resemble the cluster under study within its large scale environment. Subsequently several methods have emerged to produce simulations that look like the local Universe. This paper highlights one of these methods and its essential steps to get simulations that not only resemble the local Large Scale Structure but also that host the local clusters. It includes a new modeling of the radial peculiar velocity uncertainties to remove the observed correlation between the decreases of the simulated cluster masses and of the amount of data used as constraints with the distance from us. This method has the particularity to use solely radial peculiar velocities as constraints: no additional density constraints are required to get local cluster simulacra. The new resulting simulations host dark matter halos that match the most prominent local clusters such as Coma. Zoom-in simulations of the latter and of a volume larger than the 30 Mpc/h radius inner sphere become now possible to study local clusters and their effects. We develop a formalism to describe extensions of existing axion haloscope designs to those that possess directional sensitivity to incoming dark matter axion velocities. The effects are measurable if experiments are designed to have dimensions that approach the typical coherence length for the local axion field. With directional sensitivity, axion detection experiments would have a greatly enhanced potential to probe the local dark matter velocity distribution. We develop our formalism generally, but apply it to specific experimental designs, namely resonant cavities and dielectric disk haloscopes. We demonstrate that these experiments are capable of measuring the daily modulation of the dark matter signal and using it to reconstruct the three-dimensional velocity distribution. This allows one to measure the Solar peculiar velocity, probe the anisotropy of the dark matter velocity ellipsoid and identify cold substructures such as the recently discovered streams near to Earth. Directional experiments can also identify features over much shorter timescales, potentially facilitating the mapping of debris from axion miniclusters., 62 pages, 13 figures

Astronomy and astrophysics 615, A162 (2018). doi:10.1051/0004-6361/201832932, Context. Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are widely used to measure the expansion of the Universe. To perform such measurements the luminosity and cosmological redshift (z) of the SNe Ia have to be determined. The uncertainty on z includes an unknown peculiar velocity, which can be very large for SNe Ia in the virialized cores of massive clusters.Aims. We determine which SNe Ia exploded in galaxy clusters using 145 SNe Ia from the Nearby Supernova Factory. We then study how the correction for peculiar velocities of host galaxies inside the clusters improves the Hubble residuals.Methods. We found 11 candidates for membership in clusters. We applied the biweight technique to estimate the redshift of a cluster. Then, we used the galaxy cluster redshift instead of the host galaxy redshift to construct the Hubble diagram.Results. For SNe Ia inside galaxy clusters, the dispersion around the Hubble diagram when peculiar velocities are taken into account is smaller compared with a case without peculiar velocity correction, which has a wRMS = 0.130 ± 0.038 mag instead of wRMS = 0.137 ± 0.036 mag. The significance of this improvement is 3.58σ. If we remove the very nearby Virgo cluster member SN2006X (z < 0.01) from the analysis, the significance decreases to 1.34σ. The peculiar velocity correction is found to be highest for the SNe Ia hosted by blue spiral galaxies. Those SNe Ia have high local specific star formation rates and smaller stellar masses, which is seemingly counter to what might be expected given the heavy concentration of old, massive elliptical galaxies in clusters.Conclusions. As expected, the Hubble residuals of SNe Ia associated with massive galaxy clusters improve when the cluster redshift is taken as the cosmological redshift of the supernova. This fact has to be taken into account in future cosmological analyses in order to achieve higher accuracy for cosmological redshift measurements. [Abridged] We study the abundance and clustering properties of HI at redshifts $z\leqslant5$ using TNG100, a large state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamic simulation of a 75 Mpc/h box size. We show that most of the HI lies within dark matter halos and quantify the average HI mass hosted by halos of mass M at redshift z. We find that only halos with circular velocities larger than $\simeq$ 30 km/s contain HI. While the density profiles of HI exhibit a large halo-to-halo scatter, the mean profiles are universal across mass and redshift. The HI in low-mass halos is mostly located in the central galaxy, while in massive halos is concentrated in the satellites. We show that the HI and matter density probability distribution functions differ significantly. Our results point out that for small halos the HI bulk velocity goes in the same direction and has the same magnitude as the halo peculiar velocity, while in large halos differences show up. We find that halo HI velocity dispersion follows a power-law with halo mass. We find a complicated HI bias, with HI becoming non-linear already at $k=0.3$ h/Mpc at $z\gtrsim3$. Our simulation reproduces the DLAs bias value from observations. We find that the clustering of HI can be accurately reproduced by perturbative methods. We identify a new secondary bias, by showing that the clustering of halos depends not only on mass but also on HI content. We compute the amplitude of the HI shot-noise and find that it is small at all redshifts. We study the clustering of HI in redshift-space, and show that linear theory can explain the ratio between the monopoles in redshift- and real-space down to small scales at high redshift. We find that the amplitude of the Fingers-of-God effect is larger for HI than for matter. We consider the total nonlocal energy associated with a particle at rest in the Hubble flow, i.e., the relational energy between this particle and all connected particles within the causal horizon. The particle, even while at rest, partakes in relative recessional and peculiar motion of connected particles in 3 dimensions. A geometrical argument due to Berkeley suggests that the nonlocal mass of recessional energy associated with the particle is 3 times its Newtonian mass. It follows that nonlocal recessional and peculiar energy of the Universe are equal, and match Misner-Sharp energy within the apparent horizon. Contributions of recessional and peculiar nonlocal energy are thus shown to generate a 6 times higher level of matter energy than expected from the Newtonian mass. Accordingly, the nonlocal energy density of baryons is expected to be 6 times the standard local energy density of baryons, i.e., $\Omega_{\textrm{b,eff}}=6\Omega_{\textrm{b}}$. At $\Omega_{\textrm{b}}\sim0.0484\pm0.0017$ (Planck 2015 results) this predicts a nonlocal baryon energy density $\Omega_{\textrm{b,eff}}\sim0.290\pm0.010$, in agreement with observed matter density $\Omega_{\textrm{m}}\sim0.308\pm0.012$. We study the hydrodynamics of bubble expansion in cosmological first-order phase transition in the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background with probe limit. Recent spectroscopic observations of a few thousand partially obscured galaxies in the Vela constellation revealed a massive overdensity on supercluster scales straddling the Galactic Equator (l~272.5deg) at cz~18000km/s. It remained unrecognised because it is located just beyond the boundaries and volumes of systematic whole-sky redshift and peculiar velocity surveys – and is obscured by the Milky Way. The structure lies close to the apex where residual bulkflows suggest considerable mass excess. The uncovered Vela Supercluster (VSCL) conforms of a confluence of merging walls, but its core remains uncharted. At the thickest foreground dust column densities (|b|< 6deg) galaxies are not visible and optical spectroscopy is not effective. This precludes a reliable estimate of the mass of VSCL, hence its effect on the cosmic flow field and the peculiar velocity of the Local Group. Only systematic HI-surveys can bridge that gap. We have run simulations and will present early-science observing scenarios with MeerKAT 32 (M32) to complete the census of this dynamically and cosmologically relevant supercluster. M32 has been put forward because this pilot project will also serve as precursor project for HI MeerKAT Large Survey Projects, like Fornax and Laduma. Our calculations have shown that a survey area of the fully obscured part of the supercluster, where the two walls cross and the potential core of the supercluster resides, can be achieved on reasonable time-scales (200 hrs) with M32.

The observed power spectrum in redshift space appears distorted due to the peculiar motion of galaxies, known as redshift-space distortions (RSD). While all the effects in RSD are accounted for by the simple mapping formula from real to redshift spaces, accurately modeling redshift-space power spectrum is rather difficult due to the non-perturbative properties of the mapping. Still, however, a perturbative treatment may be applied to the power spectrum at large-scales, and on top of a careful modeling of the Finger-of-God effect caused by the small-scale random motion, the redshift-space power spectrum can be expressed as a series of expansion which contains the higher-order correlations of density and velocity fields. In our previous work [JCAP 8 (Aug., 2016) 050], we provide a perturbation-theory inspired model for power spectrum in which the higher-order correlations are evaluated directly from the cosmological $N$-body simulations. Adopting a simple Gaussian ansatz for Finger-of-God effect, the model is shown to quantitatively describe the simulation results. Here, we further push this approach, and present an accurate power spectrum template which can be used to estimate the growth of structure as a key to probe gravity on cosmological scales. Based on the simulations, we first calibrate the uncertainties and systematics in the pertrubation theory calculation in a fiducial cosmological model. Then, using the scaling relations, the calibrated power spectrum template is applied to a different cosmological model. We demonstrate that with our new template, the best-fitted growth functions are shown to reproduce the fiducial values in a good accuracy of 1 \% at $k, 24 pages

We recently discovered a yellow supergiant (YSG) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with a heliocentric radial velocity of ~300 km/s which is much larger than expected for a star in its location in the SMC. This is the first runaway YSG ever discovered and only the second evolved runaway star discovered in a different galaxy than the Milky Way. We classify the star as G5-8I, and use de-reddened broad-band colors with model atmospheres to determine an effective temperature of 4700+/-250K, consistent with what is expected from its spectral type. The star's luminosity is then L/Lo ~ 4.2+/-0.1, consistent with it being a ~30Myr 9Mo star according to the Geneva evolution models. The star is currently located in the outer portion of the SMC's body, but if the star's transverse peculiar velocity is similar to its peculiar radial velocity, in 10Myr the star would have moved 1.6 degrees across the disk of the SMC, and could easily have been born in one of the SMC's star-forming regions. Based on its large radial velocity, we suggest it originated in a binary system where the primary exploded as a supernovae thus flinging the runaway star out into space. Such stars may provide an important mechanism for the dispersal of heavier elements in galaxies given the large percentage of massive stars that are runaways. The dipole anisotropy seen in the {cosmic microwave background radiation} is interpreted as due to our peculiar motion. The Cosmological Principle implies that this cosmic dipole signal should also be present, with the same direction, in the large-scale distribution of matter. Measurement of the cosmic matter dipole constitutes a key test of the standard cosmological model. Current measurements of this dipole are barely above the expected noise and unable to provide a robust test. Upcoming radio continuum surveys with the SKA should be able to detect the dipole at high signal to noise. We simulate number count maps for SKA survey specifications in Phases 1 and 2, including all relevant effects. Nonlinear effects from local large-scale structure contaminate the {cosmic (kinematic)} dipole signal, and we find that removal of radio sources at low redshift ($z\lesssim 0.5$) leads to significantly improved constraints. We forecast that the SKA could determine the kinematic dipole direction in Galactic coordinates with an error of $(\Delta l,\Delta b)\sim(9^\circ,5^\circ)$ to $(8^\circ, 4^\circ)$, depending on the sensitivity. The predicted errors on the relative speed are $\sim 10\%$. These measurements would significantly reduce the present uncertainty on the direction of the radio dipole, and thus enable the first critical test of consistency between the matter and CMB dipoles., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. We present an improved Minimal Variance (MV) method for using a radial peculiar velocity sample to estimate the average of the three-dimensional velocity field over a spherical volume, which leads to an easily interpretable bulk flow measurement. The only assumption required is that the velocity field is irrotational. The resulting bulk flow estimate is particularly insensitive to smaller scale flows. We also introduce a new constraint into the MV method that ensures that bulk flow estimates are independent of the value of the Hubble constant $H_o$; this is important given the tension between the locally measured $H_o$ and that obtained from the cosmic background radiation observations. We apply our method to the \textit{CosmicFlows-3} catalogue and find that, while the bulk flows for shallower spheres are consistent with the standard cosmological model, there is some tension between the bulk flow in a spherical volume with radius $150$\hmpc\ and its expectations; we find only a $\sim 2\%$ chance of obtaining a bulk flow as large or larger in the standard cosmological model with \textit{Planck} parameters, Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, To be published in MNRAS

High precision astrometry now enables to measure the time drift of astrophysical observables in real time, hence providing new ways to probe different cosmological models. This article presents a general derivation of the redshift and direction drifts for general observers. It is then applied to the standard cosmological framework of a Friedmann-Lemaitre space- time including all effects at first order in the cosmological perturbations, as well as in the class of spatially anisotropic universe models of the Bianchi I family. It shows that for a general observer, the direction drift splits into a parallax and an aberration drifts and order of magnitude estimates of these two components are provided. The multipolar decomposition of the redshift and aberration drifts is also derived and shows that the observer's peculiar velocity contributes only as a dipole whereas the anisotropic shear contributes as a quadrupole., 18 pages, 2 figures

We present an analysis of the two-point peculiar velocity correlation function using data from the CosmicFlows catalogues. The Millennium and MultiDark Planck 2 N-body simulations are used to estimate cosmic variance and uncertainties due to measurement errors. We compare the velocity correlation function to expectations from linear theory to constrain cosmological parameters. Using the maximum likelihood method, we find values of $\Omega_m= 0.315^{+0.205}_{-0.135}$ and $\sigma_8=0.92^{+0.440}_{-0.295}$, consistent with the Planck and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe CMB derived estimates. However, we find that the cosmic variance of the correlation function is large and non-Gaussian distributed, making the peculiar velocity correlation function less than ideal as a probe of large-scale structure., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

We present a multiwavelength study of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 1763 at redshift z = 0.231. Image analysis of a 19.6 ks Chandra archival observation reveals a cluster-wide spiral of enhanced surface brightness in the intracluster medium (ICM). While such spirals are understood to form in clusters with sloshing strong cool cores (SCCs), the gas comprising the spiral's apex is of intermediate entropy ($\sim$ 110 keV cm$^{2}$) and cooling time ($\sim$ 6.8 Gyr), indicating core disruption is occurring throughout the spiral formation process. Two subclusters dominated by the second- and third-ranked galaxies in the system lie along a line parallel to the elongation axis of the primary cluster's ICM. Both subsystems appear to have fallen in along a previously discovered intercluster filament and are each considered candidates as the perturber responsible for initiating disruptive core sloshing. Dynamical analysis indicates infall is occurring with a relative radial velocity of $\sim$ 1800 km s$^{-1}$. The brightest cluster galaxy of Abell 1763 possesses a high line-of-sight peculiar velocity (v$_{pec}$ $\sim$ 650 km s$^{-1}$) and hosts a powerful (P$_{1.4}$ $\sim$ 10$^{26}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) bent double-lobed radio source, likely shaped by the relative bulk ICM flow induced in the merger. The cluster merger model of SCC destruction invokes low impact parameter infall as the condition required for core transformation. In contrast to this, the high angular momentum event occurring in Abell 1763 suggests that off-axis mergers play a greater role in establishing the non-cool core cluster population than previously assumed., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures, accepted by ApJ

We construct an analytic model for the void-galaxy cross-correlation function that enables theoretical predictions of the dipole signal produced dominantly by the gravitational redshift within voids for the first time. By extending a theoretical formulation for the redshift-space distortion of galaxies to include the second order terms of the galaxy peculiar velocity $\bm v$ and the gravitational potential, we formulate the void-galaxy cross-correlation function multipoles in the redshift space, the monopole $\xi_0^{(s)}$, dipole $\xi_1^{(s)}$ and quadrupole $\xi_2^{(s)}$. We find that the dipole $\xi_1^{(s)}$ is dominated by the gravitational redshift, which provide a unique opportunity to detect the gravitational potential of voids. Thus, for the dipole $\xi_1^{(s)}(s)$, the gravitational redshift is crucial. Although the higher order effect is almost negligible on the monopole $\xi_0^{(s)}$, it has an influence on the quadrupole $\xi_2^{(s)}$. The effects from the random velocity of galaxies and the definition of the void center on the dipole signal are also discussed. We discuss the effects on the CMB, CIB, and thermal SZ effect due to the peculiar motion of an observer with respect to the CMB rest frame, which induces boosting effects. We investigate the scientific perspectives opened by future CMB space missions, focussing on the CORE proposal. The improvements in sensitivity offered by a mission like CORE, together with its high resolution over a wide frequency range, will provide a more accurate estimate of the CMB dipole. The extension of boosting effects to polarization and cross-correlations will enable a more robust determination of purely velocity-driven effects that are not degenerate with the intrinsic CMB dipole, allowing us to achieve a S/N ratio of 13; this improves on the Planck detection and essentially equals that of an ideal cosmic-variance-limited experiment up to a multipole l of 2000. Precise inter-frequency calibration will offer the opportunity to constrain or even detect CMB spectral distortions, particularly from the cosmological reionization, because of the frequency dependence of the dipole spectrum, without resorting to precise absolute calibration. The expected improvement with respect to COBE-FIRAS in the recovery of distortion parameters (in principle, a factor of several hundred for an ideal experiment with the CORE configuration) ranges from a factor of several up to about 50, depending on the quality of foreground removal and relative calibration. Even for 1% accuracy in both foreground removal and relative calibration at an angular scale of 1 deg, we find that dipole analyses for a mission like CORE will be able to improve the recovery of the CIB spectrum amplitude by a factor of 17 in comparison with current results based on FIRAS. The apparent sizes and brightnesses of galaxies are correlated in a dipolar pattern around matter overdensities in redshift space, appearing larger on their near side and smaller on their far side. The opposite effect occurs for galaxies around an underdense region. These patterns of apparent magnification induce dipole and higher multipole terms in the cross-correlation of galaxy number density fluctuations with galaxy size/brightness (which is sensitive to the convergence field). This provides a means of directly measuring peculiar velocity statistics at low and intermediate redshift, with several advantages for performing cosmological tests of GR. In particular, it does not depend on empirically-calibrated scaling relations like the Tully-Fisher and Fundamental Plane methods. We show that the next generation of spectroscopic galaxy redshift surveys will be able to measure the Doppler magnification effect with sufficient signal-to-noise to test GR on large scales. We illustrate this with forecasts for the constraints that can be achieved on parametrised deviations from GR for forthcoming low-redshift galaxy surveys with DESI and SKA2. We investigate the alignment of haloes with the filaments of the cosmic web using an unprecedently large sample of dark matter haloes taken from the P-Millennium $\Lambda$CDM cosmological N-body simulation. We use the state-of-the-art NEXUS morphological formalism which, due to its multiscale nature, simultaneously identifies structures at all scales. We find strong and highly significant alignments, with both the major axis of haloes and their peculiar velocity tending to orient along the filament. However, the spin - filament alignment displays a more complex trend changing from preferentially parallel at low masses to preferentially perpendicular at high masses. This "spin flip" occurs at an average mass of $5\times10^{11}~h^{-1}M_\odot$. This mass increases with increasing filament diameter, varying by more than an order of magnitude between the thinnest and thickest filament samples. We also find that the inner parts of haloes have a spin flip mass that is several times smaller than that of the halo as a whole. These results confirm that recent accretion is responsible for the complex behaviour of the halo spin - filament alignment. Low-mass haloes mainly accrete mass along directions perpendicular to their host filament and thus their spins tend to be oriented along the filaments. In contrast, high-mass haloes mainly accrete along their host filaments and have their spins preferentially perpendicular to them. Furthermore, haloes located in thinner filaments are more likely to accrete along their host filaments than haloes of the same mass located in thicker filaments., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS on 16th August 2018

We construct the rotation curve of the Milky Way in the extended solar neighbourhood using a sample of SEGUE (Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration) G-dwarfs. We investigate the rotation curve shape for the presence of any peculiarities just outside the solar radius as has been reported by some authors. We approach the problem in a framework of classical Jeans analysis. Using the most recent data from RAVE (RAdial Velocity Experiment), we determine the solar peculiar velocity and the radial scalelengths for the three populations of different metallicities representing the Galactic thin disc. Then with the same binning in metallicity for the SEGUE G-dwarfs, we construct the rotation curve in the range of Galactocentric distances 7-10 kpc. We derive the circular velocity by correcting the mean tangential velocity for the asymmetric drift in each distance bin. With SEGUE data we also calculate the radial scalelength of the thick disc taking as known the derived peculiar motion of the Sun and the slope of the rotation curve. The rotation curve constructed through SEGUE G-dwarfs appears to be smooth in the selected radial range. The local kinematics of the thin disc rotation as determined in the framework of our new careful analysis does not favour the presence of a massive overdensity ring just outside the solar radius., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. A long-standing issue in peculiar velocity cosmology is whether the halo/galaxy velocity bias $b_v=1$ at large scale. The resolution of this important issue must resort to high precision cosmological simulations. However, this is hampered by another long-standing `sampling artifact' problem in volume weighted velocity measurement. We circumvent this problem with a hybrid approach. We first measure statistics free of sampling artifact, then link them to volume weighted statistics in theory, finally solve for the velocity bias. $b_v$ determined by our method is not only free of sampling artifact, but also free of cosmic variance. We apply this method to a $\Lambda$CDM N-body simulation of $3072^3$ particles and $1200 Mpc/{\rm h}$ box size. For the first time, we determine the halo velocity bias to $0.1\%$-$1\%$ accuracy. Our major findings are as follows: (1) $b_v\neq 1$ at $k>0.1 h/{\rm Mpc}$. The deviation from unity ($|b_v-1|$) increases with $k$. Depending on halo mass and redshift, it may reach $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ at $k=0.2 h/{\rm Mpc}$ and $\mathcal{O}(0.05)$ at $k\sim 0.3 h/{\rm Mpc}$. The discovered $b_v\neq 1$ has statistically significant impact on structure growth rate measurement by spectroscopic redshift surveys, including DESI, Euclid and SKA. (2) Both the sign and the amplitude of $b_v-1$ depend on mass and redshift. These results disagree with the peak model prediction in that $b_v$ has much weaker deviation from unity, varies with redshift, and can be bigger than unity. (3) Most of the mass and redshift dependences can be compressed into a single dependence on the halo density bias. In an isotropic and homogeneous Hubble expansion, all transverse motion is peculiar. Like the radial peculiar velocities of galaxies, transverse peculiar velocities are a means to trace the density of matter that does not rely on light tracing mass. Unlike radial peculiar velocity measurements that require precise redshift-independent distances in order to distinguish between the Hubble expansion and the observed redshift, transverse peculiar velocities can be measured using redshifts alone as a proxy for distance. Extragalactic proper motions can therefore directly measure peculiar velocities and probe the matter power spectrum. Here we develop two-point transverse velocity correlation statistics and demonstrate their dependence on the matter power spectrum. We predict the power in these correlation statistics as a function of the physical separation, angular separation, and distance of pairs of galaxies and demonstrate that the effect of large scale structure on transverse motions is best measured for pairs of objects with comoving separations less than about 50 Mpc. Motions of galaxies in the universe are due to the rivalry between the expansion of the universe and gravitation. This tug-of-war impacts the formation and the growth of large scale structures of the universe. Thus, depending on the identity of the winner of this duel, the universe is more or less compact. Within this context, this PhD thesis is divided into three parts, spanning from HI observations to the estimate of the growth of rate of large scale structures of the universe and the compactness of the local universe.The Cosmicflows collaboration assembles catalogues of galaxy distances. Up to now, three catalogues have been published, the last one being Cosmicflows-3. This thesis presents and analyses observational data obtained from HI observations. These new data will be used to construct the new compilation of distances Cosmicflows-4 by the use of the Tully-Fisher relation, in order to correct the lack of data in the Northern celestial hemisphere in the current catalog.From the distance of a galaxy, one can derive the radial part of its peculiar velocity corresponding to the component of its total velocity caused by gravitation. Peculiar velocities allow to probe the matter content of the universe and to extract information on large scale structures of the universe. Two methodologies using peculiar velocities have been developed during this thesis to characterize large scale structures of the local universe.On the one hand, peculiar velocity catalogues can be used to reconstruct tri-dimensional velocity fields. These velocity field allow one to map the structure of the local universe and are used in this thesis to identify gravitational basins and valleys within the local universe by computing streamlines.On the other hand, a method based on the analysis of two-point galaxy peculiar velocity correlations has been developed in order to constrain the growth rate of large scale structures of the local universe from observational data. This method is applied to the Cosmicflows-3 catalogue of observed peculiar velocities, Les mouvements des galaxies dans l'Univers sont causés par le tir à la corde qui a lieu entre l'expansion de l'univers et la gravitation. Cette rivalité a un impact sur la formation et la croissance des grandes structures de l'univers. Par conséquent, l'univers est plus ou moins compact selon le gagnant de ce duel. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse est divisée en trois parties, allant des observations à 21 cm à la mesure du taux de croissance actuel des grandes structures de l'univers et de la compacité de l'univers local.La collaboration Cosmicflows prépare des catalogues de distances de galaxies. Archival HST data taken in F606W+F814W of two different fields in the outer regions of NGC 6946 is used to measure a tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance to the galaxy. We employ a Bayesian maximum-likelihood modeling method that incorporates the completeness of the photometry, and allows us to model the luminosity function of the RGB population. Our two fields provide us with distances of 7.74 $\pm$ 0.42 Mpc and 7.69 $\pm$ 0.50 Mpc, respectively. Our final distance of 7.72 $\pm$ 0.32 Mpc is higher than most values published previously in the literature. This has important implications for supernova measurements, as NGC 6946 is host to the most observed supernovae (10) of any galaxy to date. We find that the supernovae in NGC 6946 are on average $\sim$ 2.3 times more luminous than previous estimates. Our distance gives NGC 6946 a peculiar velocity of $v_{pec}$ = $-229$ $\pm$ $29$ km/s in the Local Sheet frame. This velocity is the projected component of a substantial negative SGZ motion, indicating a coherent motion along with the other members of the M101 wall toward the plane of the Local Sheet. We compute the bulk motions of cosmic voids, using a $\Lambda$CDM numerical simulation considering the mean velocities of the dark matter inside the void itself and that of the haloes in the surrounding shell. We find coincident values of these two measures in the range $\sim$ 300-400 km/s, not far from the expected mean peculiar velocities of groups and galaxy clusters. When analysing the distribution of the pairwise relative velocities of voids, we find a remarkable bimodal behaviour consistent with an excess of both systematically approaching and receding voids. We determine that the origin of this bimodality resides in the void large scale environment, since once voids are classified into void-in-void (R-type) or void-in-cloud (S-type), R-types are found mutually receding away, while S-types approach each other. The magnitude of these systematic relative velocities account for more than 100 km/s, reaching large coherence lengths of up to 200 h$^{-1}$ Mpc . We have used samples of voids from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS-DR7) and the peculiar velocity field inferred from linear theory, finding fully consistent results with the simulation predictions. We explore similarities and differences between several estimators of the cosmological bulk flow, $\bf B$, from the observed radial peculiar velocities of galaxies. A distinction is made between two theoretical definitions of $\bf B$ as a dipole moment of the velocity field weighted by a radial window function. One definition involves the three dimensional (3D) peculiar velocity, while the other is based on its radial component alone. Different methods attempt at inferring $\bf B$ for either of these definitions which coincide only for a constant velocity field. We focus on the Wiener Filtering (WF, Hoffman et al. 2015) and the Constrained Minimum Variance (CMV,Feldman et al. 2010) methodologies. Both methodologies require a prior expressed in terms of the radial velocity correlation function. Hoffman et al. compute $\bf B$ in Top-Hat windows from a WF realization of the 3D peculiar velocity field. Feldman et al. infer $\bf B$ directly from the observed velocities for the second definition of $\bf B$. The WF methodology could easily be adapted to the second definition, in which case it will be equivalent to the CMV with the exception of the imposed constraint. For a prior with vanishing correlations or very noisy data, CMV reproduces the standard Maximum Likelihood (ML, Kaiser 1988) estimation for $\bf B$ of the entire sample independent of the radial weighting function. Therefore, this estimator is likely more susceptible to observational biases that could be present in measurements of distant galaxies. Finally, two additional estimators are proposed., 7 pages

A rigorous theoretical investigation has been made on dust-acoustic (DA) shock structures in an unmagnetized dusty plasma system whose constituents are negatively charged cold mobile dust fluid, electrons following Boltzmann distribution, and positively charged ions of two distinct temperatures following nonextensive ( $q$ ) and nonthermal distributions, respectively. In this paper, the Burgers’ equation has been derived by employing reductive perturbation technique which is valid for small but finite amplitude limit. It is observed that both the nonextensive and nonthermal ions of two distinct temperatures and dust kinematic viscosity significantly modify the basic properties (amplitudes, width, and polarities) of the DA shockwaves (DASHWs). The effects of low (high) temperature ions following nonextensive (nonthermal) and dust kinematic viscosity on DASHWs are examined both analytically and numerically. The implications of these results to some astrophysical environments and space plasmas (e.g., stellar polytropes, peculiar velocity distributions of galaxies, and collisionless thermal plasma), and laboratory dusty plasma systems are briefly mentioned.

In this paper, we constrain the dimensionless Compton wavelength parameter B0 of f(R) gravity as well as the mass of sterile neutrino by using the cosmic microwave background observations, the baryon acoustic oscillation surveys, and the linear growth rate measurements. Since both the f(R) model and the sterile neutrino generally predict scale-dependent growth rates, we utilize the growth rate data measured in different wavenumber bins with the theoretical growth rate approximatively scale-independent in each bin. The employed growth rate data come from the peculiar velocity measurements at z=0 in five wavenumber bins, and the redshift space distortions measurements at z=0.25 and z=0.37 in one wavenumber bin. By constraining the f(R) model alone, we get a tight 95% upper limit of log10⁡B0

The cyclic tilt of a retaining wall induces a peculiar motion in the backfill (sand), which exhibits closed trajectories (eddies). In this paper, the motion of the backfill has been optically traced and analyzed by means of particle image velocimetry, also known as digital image correlation. The results are of importance for cyclically loaded structures (e.g, piles for off-shore structures) and can also serve to test numerical simulations of large deformation.

In the region of the sky limited by the coordinates RA$=7.0^h...12.0^h$, Dec$=0^\circ...+20^\circ$ and extending from the Virgo Cluster to the South Pole of the Local Supercluster, we consider the data on the galaxies with radial velocities $V_{LG}\lesssim 2000$ km/s. For 290 among them, we determine individual distances and peculiar velocities. In this region, known as the local velocity anomaly zone, there are 23 groups and 20 pairs of galaxies for which the estimates of virial/orbital masses are obtained. A nearby group around NGC3379 = Leo I and NGC3627 as well as the Local Group show the motion from the Local Void in the direction of Leo cloud with a characteristic velocity of about 400 km/s. Another rich group of galaxies around NGC3607 reveals peculiar velocity of about -420 km/s in the frame of reference related with the cosmic background radiation. A peculiar scattered association of dwarf galaxies Gemini Flock at a distance of 8 Mpc has the radial velocity dispersion of only 20 km/s and the size of approximately 0.7 Mpc. The virial mass estimate for it is 300 times greater than the total stellar mass. The ratio of the sum of virial masses of groups and pairs in the Leo/Can region to the sum of stellar masses of the galaxies contained in them equals 26, which is equivalent to the local average density $\Omega_{m(local)} = 0.074$, which is 3-4 times smaller than the global average density of matter., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. We introduce a $\textit{frequency-dependent}$ Doppler and aberration transformation kernel for the harmonic multipoles of a general cosmological observable with spin weight $s$, Doppler weight $d$ and arbitrary frequency spectrum. In the context of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) studies, the frequency-dependent formalism allows to correct for the motion-induced aberration and Doppler effects on individual frequency maps with different masks. It also permits to deboost background radiations with non-blackbody frequency spectra, like extragalactic foregrounds and CMB spectra with primordial spectral distortions. The formalism can also be used to correct individual E and B polarization modes and account for motion-induced E/B mixing of polarized observables with $d\neq1$ at different frequencies. We apply the generalized aberration kernel on polarized and unpolarized CMB specific intensity at 100 and 217 GHz and show that the motion-induced effects typically increase with the frequency of observation. In all-sky CMB experiments, the frequency-dependence of the motion-induced effects for a blackbody spectrum are overall negligible. However in a cut-sky analysis, ignoring the frequency dependence can lead to percent level error in the polarized and unpolarized power spectra over all angular scales. In the specific cut-sky used in our analysis ($b > 45^\circ, f_\text{sky}\simeq14\%$), and for the dipole-inferred velocity $��=0.00123$ typically attributed to our peculiar motion, the Doppler and aberration effects can change polarized and unpolarized power spectra of specific intensity in the CMB rest frame by $1-2\%$, but we find the polarization cross-leakage between E and B modes to be negligible., 15 pages, 12 figures. The historic detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger (GW170817) and its electromagnetic counterpart led to the first accurate (sub-arcsecond) localization of a gravitational-wave event. The transient was found to be $\sim$10" from the nucleus of the S0 galaxy NGC 4993. We report here the luminosity distance to this galaxy using two independent methods. (1) Based on our MUSE/VLT measurement of the heliocentric redshift ($z_{\rm helio}=0.009783\pm0.000023$) we infer the systemic recession velocity of the NGC 4993 group of galaxies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) frame to be $v_{\rm CMB}=3231 \pm 53$ km s$^{-1}$. Using constrained cosmological simulations we estimate the line-of-sight peculiar velocity to be $v_{\rm pec}=307 \pm 230$ km s$^{-1}$, resulting in a cosmic velocity of $v_{\rm cosmic}=2924 \pm 236$ km s$^{-1}$ ($z_{\rm cosmic}=0.00980\pm 0.00079$) and a distance of $D_z=40.4\pm 3.4$ Mpc assuming a local Hubble constant of $H_0=73.24\pm 1.74$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. (2) Using Hubble Space Telescope measurements of the effective radius (15.5" $\pm$ 1.5") and contained intensity and MUSE/VLT measurements of the velocity dispersion, we place NGC 4993 on the Fundamental Plane (FP) of E and S0 galaxies. Comparing to a frame of 10 clusters containing 226 galaxies, this yields a distance estimate of $D_{\rm FP}=44.0\pm 7.5$ Mpc. The combined redshift and FP distance is $D_{\rm NGC 4993}= 41.0\pm 3.1$ Mpc. This 'electromagnetic' distance estimate is consistent with the independent measurement of the distance to GW170817 as obtained from the gravitational-wave signal ($D_{\rm GW}= 43.8^{+2.9}_{-6.9}$ Mpc) and confirms that GW170817 occurred in NGC 4993., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We have shown that Lyman-$\alpha$ blobs (LABs) may still exist even at $z\sim0.3$, about 7 billion years later than most other LABs known (Schirmer et al. 2016). Their luminous Ly$\alpha$ and [OIII] emitters at $z\sim0.3$ offer new insights into the ionization mechanism. This paper focuses on the two X-ray brightest LABs at $z\sim0.3$, SDSS J0113$+$0106 (J0113) and SDSS J1155$-$0147 (J1155), comparable in size and luminosity to `B1', one of the best-studied LABs at $z \gtrsim$ 2. Our NuSTAR hard X-ray (3--30 keV) observations reveal powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN) with $L_{2-10{\;\rm keV}}=(0.5$--$3)\times10^{44}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. J0113 also faded by a factor of $\sim 5$ between 2014 and 2016, emphasizing that variable AGN may cause apparent ionization deficits in LABs. Joint spectral analyses including Chandra data constrain column densities of $N_{\rm H}=5.1^{+3.1}_{-3.3}\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ (J0113) and $N_{\rm H}=6.0^{+1.4}_{-1.1}\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (J1155). J0113 is likely buried in a torus with a narrow ionization cone, but ionizing radiation is also leaking in other directions as revealed by our Gemini/GMOS 3D spectroscopy. The latter shows a bipolar outflow over $10$ kpc, with a peculiar velocity profile that is best explained by AGN flickering. X-ray analysis of J1155 reveals a weakly absorbed AGN that may ionize over a wide solid angle, consistent with our 3D spectra. Extinction corrected [OIII] log-luminosities are high, $\sim43.6$. The velocity dispersions are low, $\sim100$--$150$ km s$^{-1}$, even at the AGN positions. We argue that this is a combination of high extinction hiding the turbulent gas, and previous outflows that have cleared the escape paths for their successors., Comment: 15 pages, 17 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

ALMA imaging of the cold molecular medium in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 1808 is presented. The observations reveal the distribution of molecular gas, traced by $^{12}$CO (1-0) and $^{12}$CO (3-2), and continuum (93 and 350 GHz) across the central 1 kpc starburst region at high resolution of $\sim1$ arcsec. A molecular gas torus (radius $\sim30$ pc) is discovered in the circumnuclear disk (CND; central 100 pc), with a high CO (3-2)/CO (1-0) ratio of $\sim1$, surrounded by massive ($10^6$-$10^7$ $M_\odot$) clouds with high star formation efficiency (SFE$\sim10^{-8}$ yr$^{-1}$), molecular spiral arms, and a 500 pc pseudoring. The CND harbors a continuum core and molecular gas exhibiting peculiar motion. The new data confirm the line splitting along the minor galactic axis, interpreted as a nuclear gas outflow with average velocity $\sim180$ km s$^{-1}$, and show evidence of a velocity gradient of $\sim+0.4$ km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{-1}$ along the axis. In addition, supershells expanding from the 500 pc ring with maximum velocities of $\sim75$ km s$^{-1}$ are revealed. The distribution and CO luminosities of molecular clouds in the central 1 kpc starburst region indicate an evolutionary sequence, from gas accretion onto the 500 pc ring from the large-scale bar, to enhanced star formation in the ring, and outflow as feedback., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We conducted an SiO maser survey towards 221 O-rich AGB stars with the aim of identifying maser emission associated with the Sagittarius stellar stream. In this survey, maser emission was detected in 44 targets, of which 35 were new detections. All of these masers are within 5 kpc of the Sun. We also compiled a Galactic SiO maser catalogue including ~2300 SiO masers from the literature. The distribution of these SiO masers give a scale height of 0.40 kpc, while 42 sources deviate from the Galactic plane by more than 1.2 kpc, half of which were found in this survey. Regarding SiO masers in the disc, we found both the rotational speeds and the velocity dispersions vary with the Galactic plane distance. Assuming Galactic rotational speed $\Theta$0 = 240 km/s , we derived the velocity lags are 15 km/s and 55 km/s for disc and off-plane SiO masers respectively. Moreover, we identified three groups with significant peculiar motions (with 70% confidence). The most significant group is in the thick disc that might trace stream/peculiar motion of the Perseus arm. The other two groups are mainly made up of off-plane sources. The northern and southern off-plane sources were found to be moving at ~33 km/s and 54 km/s away from the Galactic plane, respectively. Causes of these peculiar motions are still unclear. Gravitational clustering in the nonlinear regime remains poorly understood. Gravity dual of gravitational clustering has recently been proposed as a means to study the nonlinear regime. The stable clustering ansatz remains a key ingredient to our understanding of gravitational clustering in the highly nonlinear regime. We study certain aspects of violation of the stable clustering ansatz in the gravity dual of Large Scale Structure (LSS). We extend the recent studies of gravitational clustering using AdS gravity dual to take into account possible departure from the stable clustering ansatz and to arbitrary dimensions. Next, we extend the recently introduced consistency relations to arbitrary dimensions. We use the consistency relations to test the commonly used models of gravitational clustering including the halo models and hierarchical ans\"atze. In particular we establish a tower of consistency relations for the hierarchical amplitudes: $Q, R_a, R_b, S_a,S_b,S_c$ etc. as a functions of the scaled peculiar velocity $h$. We also study the variants of popular halo models in this context. In contrast to recent claims, none of these models, in their simplest incarnation, seem to satisfy the consistency relations in the soft limit., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures
