Background: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and intravascular ultrasound are promising imaging modalities to identify non-obstructive plaques likely to cause coronary-related events. We aimed to assess whether combined NIRS and intravascular ultrasound can identify high-risk plaques and patients that are at risk for future major adverse cardiac events (MACEs). Methods: PROSPECT II is an investigator-sponsored, multicentre, prospective natural history study done at 14 university hospitals and two community hospitals in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. We recruited patients of any age with recent (within past 4 weeks) myocardial infarction. After treatment of all flow-limiting coronary lesions, three-vessel imaging was done with a combined NIRS and intravascular ultrasound catheter. Untreated lesions (also known as non-culprit lesions) were identified by intravascular ultrasound and their lipid content was assessed by NIRS. The primary outcome was the covariate-adjusted rate of MACEs (the composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, unstable angina, or progressive angina) arising from untreated non-culprit lesions during follow-up. The relations between plaques with high lipid content, large plaque burden, and small lumen areas and patient-level and lesion-level events were determined. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02171065. Findings: Between June 10, 2014, and Dec 20, 2017, 3629 non-culprit lesions were characterised in 898 patients (153 [17%] women, 745 [83%] men; median age 63 [IQR 55-70] years). Median follow-up was 3.7 (IQR 3.0-4.4) years. Adverse events within 4 years occurred in 112 (13.2%, 95% CI 11.0-15.6) of 898 patients, with 66 (8.0%, 95% CI 6.2-10.0) arising from 78 untreated non-culprit lesions (mean baseline angiographic diameter stenosis 46.9% [SD 15.9]). Intracellular iron is essential for many neurobiological mechanisms. However, at high concentrations, iron may induce oxidative stress and inflammation. Brain iron overload has been shown in various neurodegenerative disorders and in normal aging. Elevated brain iron in old age may trigger brain dysfunction and concomitant cognitive decline. However, the exact mechanism underlying the deleterious impact of iron on brain function in aging is unknown. Here, we investigated the role of iron on brain function across the adult lifespan from 187 healthy participants (20-79 years old, 99 women) who underwent fMRI scanning while performing a working-memory n-back task. Iron content was quantified using R2* relaxometry, whereas neuroinflammation was estimated using myo-inositol measured by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Striatal iron increased non-linearly with age, with linear increases at both ends of adulthood. Whereas higher frontostriatal activity was related to better memory performance independent of age, the link between brain activity and iron differed across age groups. Higher striatal iron was linked to greater frontostriatal activity in younger, but reduced activity in older adults. Further mediation analysis revealed that, after age 40, iron provided unique and shared contributions with neuroinflammation to brain activations, such that neuroinflammation partly mediated brain-iron associations. These findings promote a novel mechanistic understanding of how iron may exert deleterious effects on brain function and cognition with advancing age.

BACKGROUND: Observational and small, randomized studies suggest that influenza vaccine may reduce future cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease. METHODS: We conducted an investigator-initiated, randomized, double-blind trial to compare inactivated influenza vaccine with saline placebo administered shortly after myocardial infarction (MI; 99.7% of patients) or high-risk stable coronary heart disease (0.3%). The primary end point was the composite of all-cause death, MI, or stent thrombosis at 12 months. A hierarchical testing strategy was used for the key secondary end points: all-cause death, cardiovascular death, MI, and stent thrombosis. RESULTS: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the data safety and monitoring board recommended to halt the trial before attaining the prespecified sample size. Between October 1, 2016, and March 1, 2020, 2571 participants were randomized at 30 centers across 8 countries. Participants assigned to influenza vaccine totaled 1290 and individuals assigned to placebo equaled 1281; of these, 2532 received the study treatment (1272 influenza vaccine and 1260 placebo) and were included in the modified intention to treat analysis. Over the 12-month follow-up, the primary outcome occurred in 67 participants (5.3%) assigned influenza vaccine and 91 participants (7.2%) assigned placebo (hazard ratio, 0.72 [95% CI, 0.52-0.99]; P=0.040). Rates of all-cause death were 2.9% and 4.9% (hazard ratio, 0.59 [95% CI, 0.39-0.89]; P=0.010), rates of cardiovascular death were 2.7% and 4.5%, (hazard ratio, 0.59 [95% CI, 0.39-0.90]; P=0.014), and rates of MI were 2.0% and 2.4% (hazard ratio, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.50-1.46]; P=0.57) in the influenza vaccine and placebo groups, respectively. Introduction: Pharmaceutical treatment and psychotherapy constitute the most common treatment methods for depression and anxiety. Physical training has been shown to have comparable effect to cognitive behavioral therapy in treatment of mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Physically active individuals also show lower risks to develop depression and relapse in depression. Objectives: The objectives are to evaluate how physical activity can affect depressive and anxiety symptoms, by examining biomarkers in the blood and from the gut and also by measuring cognitive functions. Hopefully, this can lead to new treatment strategies for patients with depression and anxiety. Methods: 102 patients are randomized to two groups and undergo 12 weeks intervention as add-on to standard outpatient psychiatric treatment. The first group will participate in physical training three times per week and the other group will receive relaxation therapy on a weekly basis. Daily activity intensity will be measured before and at the last week of intervention with an accelerometer. Blood and faeces sample collection, symptom grading by clinician together with self-rating scales and cognitive screening will be performed at baseline, week 12 and one year of follow-up. The cognitive screenings are performed digitally in cooperation with Mindmore. Results: The RCT is currently recruiting patients at the Department of Psychiatry of Örebro University Hospital. Conclusions: The project aims to be holistic in its approach, combining the defining clinical psychiatric symptoms in patients who have both depression and anxiety with the finding and evaluation of new biomarkers from blood and gut to improve cognitive functions.

Background: In PROSPECT II, 182 patients with plaque burden (PB) ≥ 65% were randomized to bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) + guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) versus GDMT alone. Protocol-directed 3-vessel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-IVUS was repeated at 25 months. Methods: Excluding lesions treated by BVS, paired (baseline and follow-up) NIRS-IVUS was available in 626 nonculprit lesions in 165 patients. Follow-up minimum lumen area (MLA) and the corresponding baseline sites were measured: rapid lesion progression (RLP) was a ≥ 0.5 mm2 decrease of MLA, and rapid lesion regression (RLR) was a ≥ 0.5 mm2 increase of MLA. Results: RLP occurred in 34.5%, RLR occurred in 15.5%, and 49.8% had “no change.” The % change in vessel area correlated with the % change of plaque area (r = 0.81, P < 0.001), demonstrating vessel remodeling (Figure 1). At baseline, the RLP lesions had larger plaque areas, longer lesions, and higher prevalence of lipid-rich plaque (maxLCBI4mm ≥ 324.7). During follow-up, 80.2% of RLP lesions had negative remodeling irrespective of the change in plaque area, whereas 76.3% of RLR lesions had a decrease in plaque area irrespective of negative or positive remodeling. In lesions without change in lumen area, there were compensatory changes in plaque and vessel areas. Conclusion: In stabilized patients post-MI treated with GDMT, half of untreated non–flow- limiting lesions had significant lumen changes at 25 months, with RLP twice as frequent as RLR. The predominant mechanism of RLP was negative vessel remodeling whereas the predominant mechanism of RLR was reduction in plaque area.

In working memory (WM), successful maintenance of information is affected by interference. Older adults may be especially susceptible to the effects of interference, which may cause age-related cognitive impairments. A relative score of IC was derived from cross-sectional (n = 869) and longitudinal (n = 443) data to investigate (1) if IC is reduced in normal aging, (2) if individual differences in IC related to individual performance in other cognitive domains, and (3) if 5-year change in IC is related to change in general cognition. Older age was associated with reduced IC, but no decline in IC occurred over 5 years. Also, the ability to control interference in WM was related to performance in episodic memory, verbal fluency, and block design. We also found that IC mediates the relationship between age and cognition, suggesting that age-related cognitive decline is linked to IC. Background We hypothesized that the transition from bare-metal stents (BMS) to newer generation drug-eluting stents (n-DES) in clinical practice may have reduced the risk also in patients with kidney dysfunction. Methods: Observational study in the national SWEDEHEART registry, that compared the 1-year risk of in-stent restenosis (RS) and stent thrombosis (ST) in all percutaneous coronary intervention treated patients(n = 92 994) during 2007-2013. Results: N-DES patients were younger than BMS, but had more often diabetes, previous myocardial infarction, previous revascularization and were more often treated with potent platelet inhibition. N-DES versus BMS, was associated with lower 1-year risk of RS in patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) >60 with a cumulative probability of 2.1% versus 5.3%, adjusted hazard ratio 0.30, 95% CI (0.27-0.34) and with eGFR 30-60: 3.0% versus 4.9%; hazard ratio 0.46 (0.36-0.60) but not in patients with eGFR <30: 8.1% versus 6.0%; hazard ratio 1.32 (0.71-2.45) (pinteraction = 0.009) as well as lower risk of ST for eGFR >60 and eGFR 30-60: 0.5% versus 0.9%; hazard ratio 0.52 (0.40-0.68) and 0.6% versus 1.3%; hazard ratio 0.54 (0.54-0.72) but not for eGFR <30; 2.1% versus 1.1%; hazard ratio 1.49 (0.56-3.98) (p(interaction)= 0.027). Conclusion: N-DES is associated with lower 1-year risk of in-stent restenosis and stent thrombosis in patients with normal or moderately reduced kidney function but not in patients with severe kidney dysfunction, where stenting is associated with worse outcomes regardless of stent type.

BACKGROUND: It is not clear if the European Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation algorithm is useful for identifying prevalent subclinical atherosclerosis in a population of apparently healthy individuals. Our aim was to explore the association between the risk estimates from Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation and prevalent subclinical atherosclerosis. DESIGN: The design of this study was as a cross-sectional analysis from a population-based study cohort. METHODS: From the general population, the Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study randomly invited individuals aged 50-64 years and enrolled 13,411 participants mean age 57 (standard deviation 4.3) years; 46% males between November 2013-December 2016. Associations between Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation risk estimates and coronary artery calcification and plaques in the carotid arteries by using imaging data from a computed tomography of the heart and ultrasonography of the carotid arteries were examined. RESULTS: Coronary calcification was present in 39.5% and carotid plaque in 56.0%. In men, coronary artery calcium score >0 ranged from 40.7-65.9% and presence of carotid plaques from 54.5% to 72.8% in the age group 50-54 and 60-65 years, respectively. In women, the corresponding difference was from 17.1-38.9% and from 41.0-58.4%. A doubling of Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation was associated with an increased probability to have coronary artery calcium score >0 (odds ratio: 2.18 (95% confidence interval 2.07-2.30)) and to have >1 carotid plaques (1.67 (1.61-1.74)). CONCLUSION: Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation estimated risk is associated with prevalent subclinical atherosclerosis in two major vascular beds in a general population sample without established cardiovascular disease or diabetes mellitus. Thus, the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation risk chart may be of use for estimating the risk of subclinical atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndromes most commonly arise from thrombosis of lipid-rich coronary atheromas that have large plaque burden despite angiographically appearing mild. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine the outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of non-flow-limiting vulnerable plaques. METHODS: Three-vessel imaging was performed with a combination intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) catheter after successful PCI of all flow-limiting coronary lesions in 898 patients presenting with myocardial infarction (MI). Patients with an angiographically nonobstructive stenosis not intended for PCI but with IVUS plaque burden of ≥65% were randomized to treatment of the lesion with a bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) plus guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) versus GDMT alone. The primary powered effectiveness endpoint was the IVUS-derived minimum lumen area (MLA) at protocol-driven 25-month follow-up. The primary (nonpowered) safety endpoint was randomized target lesion failure (cardiac death, target vessel-related MI, or clinically driven target lesion revascularization) at 24 months. The secondary (nonpowered) clinical effectiveness endpoint was randomized lesion-related major adverse cardiac events (cardiac death, MI, unstable angina, or progressive angina) at latest follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 182 patients were randomized (93 BVS, 89 GDMT alone) at 15 centers. The median angiographic diameter stenosis of the randomized lesions was 41.6%; by near-infrared spectroscopy-IVUS, the median plaque burden was 73.7%, the median MLA was 2.9 mm2, and the median maximum lipid plaque content was 33.4%. Angiographic follow-up at 25 months was completed in 167 patients (91.8%), and the median clinical follow-up was 4.1 years. The follow-up MLA in BVS-treated lesions was 6.9 ± 2.6 mm2 compared with 3.0 ± 1.0 mm2 in GDMT alone-treated lesions (least square means difference: 3.9 mm2; 95% confidence interval: 3.3 to 4.5

Objective: Most reports on the declining incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) during the COVID-19 have either been anecdotal, survey results or geographically limited to areas with lockdowns. We examined the incidence of MI during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden, which has remained an open society with a different public health approach fighting COVID-19. Methods: We assessed the incidence rate (IR) as well as the incidence rate ratios (IRRs) of all MI referred for coronary angiography in Sweden using the nationwide Swedish Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty Registry (SCAAR), during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden (1 March 2020-7 May 2020) in relation to the same days 2015-2019. Results: A total of 2443 MIs were referred for coronary angiography during the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in an IR 36 MIs/day (204 MIs/100 000 per year) compared with 15 213 MIs during the reference period with an IR of 45 MIs/day (254 MIs/100 000 per year) resulting in IRR of 0.80, 95% CI (0.74 to 0.86), p<0.001. Results were consistent in all investigated patient subgroups, indicating no change in patient category seeking cardiac care. Kaplan-Meier event rates for 7-day case fatality were 439 (2.3%) compared with 37 (2.9%) (HR: 0.81, 95% CI (0.58 to 1.13), p=0.21). Time to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was shorter during the pandemic and PCI was equally performed, indicating no change in quality of care during the pandemic. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reduced the incidence of MI referred for invasive treatment strategy. No differences in overall short-term case fatality or quality of care indicators were observed.

The mechanisms underlying repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment are largely unknown. Although there is a general lack of sham controlled studies, findings show altered functional connectivity to the stimulated region following treatment. When targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), connectivity with the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) is predictive of response, but less is known about the effects on functional connectivity of targeting the dorsomedial PFC (dmPFC). Here, 30 patients with an ongoing depressive episode were recruited and randomized to 20 sessions at target intensity of either active or sham intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) over dmPFC. Those receiving sham were offered active treatment in a subsequent open phase. A seven minute resting-state scan and depressive symptom assessment was performed before and after treatment. After exclusions due to attrition and excessive head movements 23 patients remained for analysis. Seed-based resting-state connectivity was calculated using two seeds for the dmPFC target as well as the sgACC. A symptom related increase in dmPFC connectivity after active treatment, compared to sham treatment, was found. The effect was observed in a region overlapping the precuneus and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), suggesting an increase in the connectivity between the targeted salience network and the default mode network mediating improvement in depressive symptoms. Connectivity between the precuneus and both the sgACC and the treatment target was predictive of symptom improvement following active treatment. The findings have implications for understanding the mechanisms behind iTBS and may inform future efforts to individualize the treatment.

Background: Prefrontal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is an established add-on treatment for major depressive disorder and is increasingly feasible with protocols of short duration, such as intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS). The most common and limiting side effect is pain at the site of application. Our objective was to investigate how pain develops over time in patients with depression receiving iTBS compared to sham stimulation. Methods: This is a subsample from a randomized clinical trial. Patients received daily sessions of 2400 pulses of dorsomedial prefrontal iTBS or sham stimulation with transcutaneous electric stimulation during 2 to 3 weeks. After unmasking of treatment allocation, patients receiving sham treatment were offered active iTBS in an open phase. Patients rated pain on a scale from 0 to 10 after the last train of stimulation on the first, fifth and final treatment day. A Mann-Whitney U-test was conducted to test for group differences and related-samples Friedman's tests to analyze changes in pain ratings over time. Results: The scalp pain in the group receiving iTBS was rated higher than sham treatment on the first (U = 263.5,p = 0.035) and fifth day (U = 271.0,p = 0.020) but not on the final day (U = 210.5,p = 0.121). The pain decreased mainly during the first 5 days of treatment (chi(2) = 0.875,p = 0.040). In the open phase the pain decreased from the first day to the final day (chi(2) = 1.194,p = 0.001). Conclusions: The subjective pain perception of active dorsomedial iTBS was higher than sham treatment but decreased over time, indicating an analgesic effect, or habituation. The result from this study can be used to inform patients about what to expect regarding pain during an iTBS treatment course. Trial registration: Clinicaltrials.gov, NCT02905604. Heart rate variability (HRV), a measurement of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, has been found reduced in schizophrenia. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which is important in regulating the ANS, is structurally and functionally affected in schizophrenia. We investigate the relationship between HRV and functional and structural connectivity of the ACC in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Ten patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and ten healthy controls were recruited. Heart rate was monitored in a naturalistic out-of-clinic setting. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed, including resting-state functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging. Patients with schizophrenia had significantly lower HRV compared to controls. A positive correlation between ACC connectivity with the bilateral cerebellum and HRV was found in the patients. HRV was also positively correlated with amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in the cerebellum, and with axial diffusivity in the middle cerebellar peduncle, in the patients. There was a significant negative relationship between antipsychotic medication dosage, HRV and all neuroimaging measures related to HRV. We conclude that ACC connectivity seems to be affected in schizophrenia, both structurally and functionally, and that the ACC-cerebellum connectivity, as well as cerebellar function, is associated with ANS regulation in patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the outcomes of patients with de novo lesions in small coronary vessels undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-coated balloons (DCBs) or newer-generation drug-eluting stents (n-DES). BACKGROUND Notwithstanding the available evidence from a few randomized clinical trials and meta-analyses, the best device for PCI in patients with small-vessel coronary artery disease is not yet established. METHODS The study included all consecutive patients with de novo lesions in small coronary vessels undergoing PCI in Sweden from April 2009 to July 2017. A small coronary vessel was defined by a device diameter <= 2.5 mm. The primary outcomes were restenosis and definite target lesion thrombosis at 3-year follow-up. The secondary outcomes were the occurrence of all-cause death and myocardial infarction. RESULTS The study population included 14,788 patients: 1,154 treated with DCBs and 13,634 with n-DES. Overall, 35,541 PCIs were performed using 2,503 DCBs and 33,038 n-DES. The propensity score-adjusted regression analysis showed a significantly higher risk for restenosis in the DCB group compared with the n-DES group (adjusted hazard ratio [HR]: 2.027; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.537 to 2.674). Conversely, no difference in the risk for target lesion thrombosis (adjusted HR: 0.741; 95% CI: 0.412 to 1.331) was detected. The risk for all-cause death (adjusted HR: 1.178; 95% CI: 0.992 to 1.399) and myocardial infarction (adjusted HR: 1.251; 95% CI: 0.960 to 1.629) was comparable between groups. CONCLUSIONS Because of the significantly higher risk for restenosis up to 3 years, this research suggests that DCBs are not an equally effective alternative to n-DES for percutaneous treatment of small coronary vessels. Pharmacological inhibition of phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) is being investigated as a treatment option in schizophrenia. PDE10A acts postsynaptically on striatal dopamine signaling by regulating neuronal excitability through its inhibition of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), and we recently found it to be reduced in schizophrenia compared to controls. Here, this finding of reduced PDE10A in schizophrenia was followed up in the same sample to investigate the effect of reduced striatal PDE10A on the neural and behavioral function of striatal and downstream basal ganglia regions. A positron emission tomography (PET) scan with the PDE10A ligand [11C]Lu AE92686 was performed, followed by a 6 min resting-state magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan in ten patients with schizophrenia. To assess the relationship between striatal function and neurophysiological and behavioral functioning, salience processing was assessed using a mismatch negativity paradigm, an auditory event-related electroencephalographic measure, episodic memory was assessed using the Rey auditory verbal learning test (RAVLT) and executive functioning using trail-making test B. Reduced striatal PDE10A was associated with increased amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) within the putamen and substantia nigra, respectively. Higher ALFF in the substantia nigra, in turn, was associated with lower episodic memory performance. The findings are in line with a role for PDE10A in striatal functioning, and suggest that reduced striatal PDE10A may contribute to cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia.

Aims: Heparin is the preferred choice of anticoagulant in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (MI). An established dosage of heparin has not yet been determined, but treatment may be optimized through monitoring of activated clotting time (ACT). The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between heparin dose or ACT with a composite outcome of death, MI, or bleeding using data from the registry-based, randomized, controlled, and open-label VALIDATE-SWEDEHEART trial, although patients were not randomized to heparin dose in this substudy. Methods and results: Patients with MI undergoing PCI and receiving treatment with a potent P2Y12-inhibitor and anticoagulation with heparin, without the planned use of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor (GPI), were enrolled in this substudy. The primary endpoint was a composite endpoint of death, MI, and bleeding at 30 days. The individual components and stent thrombosis were analysed separately. We divided patients into groups according to the initial dose of unfractionated heparin during PCI (<70 U/kg, 70-100 U/kg, and >100 U/kg) or ACT (ACT <250 s, 250-350 s, and >350 s) as well as investigating them as continuous variables in Cox proportional hazards models using univariable and multi-variable analyses. No major differences were noted between heparin stratified in groups (P = 0.22) or heparin as a continuous variable in relation to the primary composite endpoint hazard ratio (HR) 1.0 confidence interval (CI) (0.99-1.01) for heparin dose/kg. No differences were found between ACT stratified in groups (P = 0.453) or ACT in seconds HR 1.0 CI (0.99-1.00) regarding the primary endpoint. The modelling of planing craft dynamics in waves and related fluid-structure interaction is a hard challenge due to the highly nonlinear, transient and stochastic nature of the whole process. This paper explores the prospectives of detailed experimental modelling of the local structure responses for high-speed planing craft in waves. A novel experimental setup is presented where a well-defined model structure is integrated into the hull bottom of a typical planing craft model. The model is instrumented for measuring strains in the model structure, related slamming pressures, craft rigid body motions and accelerations. The experimental setup is thoroughly described and motivated and crucial aspects of the setup are verified through testing in idealized static loading conditions and by modal analysis. The capabilities of the experimental setup are demonstrated through systematic experiments in regular waves. The most indicative results are presented and discussed in relation to corresponding results from time-domain simulations The presented experimental modelling approach is concluded to enable uniquely detailed studies of the complete slamming related fluid-structure interaction process and provides a good tool for further research and development towards establishment of first principles-based methods for hydrodynamic and structure design of high-speed planing craft., QC 20201230

In working memory (WM), successful maintenance of information is affected by interference. Older adults may be especially susceptible to the effects of interference, which may cause age-related cognitive impairments. A relative score of IC was derived from cross-sectional (n = 869) and longitudinal (n = 443) data to investigate (1) if IC is reduced in normal aging, (2) if individual differences in IC related to individual performance in other cognitive domains, and (3) if 5-year change in IC is related to change in general cognition. Older age was associated with reduced IC, but no decline in IC occurred over 5 years. Also, the ability to control interference in WM was related to performance in episodic memory, verbal fluency, and block design. We also found that IC mediates the relationship between age and cognition, suggesting that age-related cognitive decline is linked to IC. Finally, we demonstrate that change in IC was related to decline in episodic memory.

Iron homeostasis is important for maintaining normal physiological brain functioning. In two independent samples, we investigate the link between iron concentration in the basal ganglia (BG) and implicit sequence learning (ISL). In Study 1, we used quantitative susceptibility mapping and task-related fMRI to examine associations among regional iron concentration measurements, brain activation, and ISL in younger and older adults. In Study 2, we examined the link between brain iron and ISL using a metric derived from fMRI in an age-homogenous sample of older adults. Three main findings were obtained. First, BG iron concentration was positively related to ISL in both studies. Second, ISL was robust for both younger and older adults, and performance-related activation was found in fronto-striatal regions across both age groups. Third, BG iron was positively linked to task-related BOLD signal in fronto-striatal regions. This is the first study investigating the relationship among brain iron accumulation, functional brain activation, and ISL, and the results suggest that higher brain iron concentration may be linked to better neurocognitive functioning in this particular task.

Vid markberedning inför skogsplantering bör det göras en avvägning mellan att skapa tillräckligt många planteringspunkter samtidigt som marken orsakas så liten skada som möjligt. Faktorer som markfuktighet och hinder i terrängen inverkar på markberedningens kvalitet, vilket medför att dessa faktorer bör påverka valet av markberedningsmetod. Den idag dominerande metoden för maskinell markberedning är harvning. Alftaprodukter tillverkar markberedningsaggregatet MidiFlex, en midjemonterad harv som komprimerar tiltan vid körning. Den har vidareutvecklats från det tidigare MIDAS-aggregatet och marknadsförs idag som ett skonsamt markberedningsalternativ. Syftet med denna studie var att utvärdera MidiFlex markberedningsresultat på fuktiga marker. Anledningen till detta var att midjemonterade aggregat har tidigare konstaterats skapa planteringspunkter under marknivå på fuktiga marker. Ett delsyfte var att undersöka MidiFlex markberedningsresultat på hinderrika marker. Under våren 2020 genomfördes en fältstudie i Dalarna där MidiFlex markberedningsresultat studerades på främst fuktiga marker. Arbetsresultatet undersöktes specifikt genom att bedöma planteringspunkternas nivå i relation till den ursprungliga marknivån. Terrängfaktorer som markfuktighet, blockkvot och antalet stubbar per hektar samt markberedningsresultat bedömdes och analyserades. På fuktig mark var 33 % av planteringspunkterna under marknivån. På frisk mark hamnade cirka 8 % under marknivån. Det var även brist på högkvalitativa planteringspunkter på fuktig mark. Andelen markpåverkan var i stort sett densamma på fuktig och frisk mark. Däremot var höjdförändringen avseende djup och höjd i genomsnitt 22 % större på fuktig än frisk mark. Några slutsatser ur studien är att MidiFlex skapar en hög andel godkända planteringspunkter på relativt hinderfria marker. På grund av komprimering av tiltan tenderar MidiFlex-aggregatet att skapa planteringspunkter under marknivå på fuktig mark. MidiFlex markpåverkan verkar inte, When it comes to soil preparation, consideration should be taken into creating a sufficient number of planting spots while at the same time causing little damage to the soil. Factors such as soil moisture and obstacles in the terrain should thereby affect the choice of soil preparation method. Alftaprodukter is the manufacturer of the MidiFlex unit, a disc trencher mounted in front of the forwarder’s bogie assembly which compresses the berm. It is marketed as environmentally friendly, and it is based on the earlier MIDAS disc trencher concept. The objective of this study was to evaluate the soil preparation results of MidiFlex on moist soils. The reason for this is that the concept has previously been noted to create planting spots below ground level on moist soils. A secondary objective was to evaluate the soil preparation results of MidiFlex on terrain with many obstacles. During the spring of 2020, a field study was conducted in Dalarna. MidiFlex soil preparation results were observed on primarily moist soils. The results were specifically observed by evaluating the planting spots’ level in relation to the original ground level. Terrain factors such as soil moisture class, boulder quota, number of stumps per hectare and the soil preparation result were registered and analyzed. On moist soil, 33 % of the planting spots were below ground level. Approximately 8 % were below ground level on mesic soil. There was a lack of high-quality planting spots on moist soil. The percentage of disturbed soil was basically the same on moist and mesic soil. The change in topography, regarding the depth of the trenches and the height of the berms, were on average 22 % higher on moist soil than on mesic soil. A few conclusions from the study is that MidiFlex creates many acceptable planting spots on terrain with relatively few obstacles.
