Numerosity perception is a key ability for human and non-human species, probably mediated by dedicated brain mechanisms. Electrophysiological studies revealed the existence of both early and mid-latency components of the Electrophysiological (EEG) signal sensitive to numerosity changes. However, it is still unknown whether these components respond to physical or perceived variation in numerical attributes. We here tackled this point by recording electrophysiological signal while participants performed a numerosity adaptation task, a robust psychophysical method yielding changes in perceived numerosity judgments despite physical numerosity invariance. Behavioral measures confirmed that the test stimulus was consistently underestimated when presented after a high numerous adaptor while perceived as veridical when presented after a neutral adaptor. Congruently, EEG results revealed a potential at around 200 ms (P2p) which was reduced when the test stimulus was presented after the high numerous adaptor. This result was much prominent over the left posterior cluster of electrodes and correlated significantly with the amount of adaptation. No earlier modulations were retrievable when changes in numerosity were illusory while both early and mid-latency modulations occurred for physical changes. Taken together, our results reveal that mid-latency P2p mainly reflects perceived changes in numerical attributes, while earlier components are likely to be bounded to the physical characteristics of the stimuli. These results suggest that short-term plastic mechanisms induced by numerosity adaptation may involve a relatively late processing stage of the visual hierarchy likely engaging cortical areas beyond the primary visual cortex. Furthermore, these results also indicate mid-latency electrophysiological correlates as a signature of the internal representation of numerical information.

Oceanic Anoxic Event 2, spanning the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary (93.9 Ma), was an episode of major perturbations in the global carbon cycle. To investigate the response of biota and the paleoceanographic conditions across this event, we present data from International Ocean Discovery Program sites U1513 and U1516 in the Mentelle Basin (offshore SW Australia; paleolatitude 59°-60°S in the mid-Cretaceous) that register the first complete records of OAE 2 at southern high latitudes. Calcareous nannofossils provide a reliable bio-chronostratigraphic framework. The distribution and abundance patterns of planktonic and benthic foraminifera, radiolaria, and calcispheres permit interpretation of the dynamics of the water mass stratification and provide support for the paleobathymetric reconstruction of the two sites, with Site U1513 located northwest of the Mentelle Basin depocenter and at a deeper depth than Site U1516. The lower OAE 2 interval is characterized by reduced water mass stratification with alternating episodes of enhanced surface water productivity and variations of the thickness of the mixed layer as indicated by the fluctuations in abundance of the intermediate dwelling planktonic foraminifera. Although it represents a valid alternative for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) with insufficient glycemic control and/or with recurrent hypoglycemia, insulin pump therapy (Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion, CSII) in Italy is nowadays still relatively uncommon. The following review aims to investigate the barriers that limit the transition to CSII and the reasons behind the widespread cases of drop-out, particularly evident in younger patients. Among the interventions that could contribute to the solution of the problem, catheter-less insulin pumps (or patch-pumps) will be described: a tool potentially able to reduce, if not eliminate, some of the main obstacles encountered by patients. In particular, a new opportunity has become available today thanks to the evolution of the generation of catheter-less insulin pumps represented by Accu-Chek® Solo (Roche Diabetes Care GmbH), therefore three clinical cases of patients with T1DM undergoing therapy with the Accu-Chek® Solo insulin pump will be presented and discussed herein.

Obesity affects the health and well-being of children globally. Despite recommendations to routinely screen children for obesity starting at age 6 years, physicians do not consistently address weight or provide effective weight-management counseling. We developed an interactive session for second-year medical students with foundational knowledge and practical communication skills around partnership and discussion of pediatric healthy weight management. Students were administered a pre-/post-Likert survey to self-assess knowledge, comfort, and confidence in counseling patients and caregivers about weight management. Students' related counseling skills were assessed during a standardized patient encounter of a teen with rapid weight gain. The session successfully increased students' self-assessed knowledge, comfort, and confidence, and resulted in successful application of weight management skills in a simulated patient encounter. Utilization of empathy skills requires continued coaching. We propose incorporation of similar sessions into medical school curricula to address the pediatric obesity epidemic.

The Arda and Stirone marine successions (Italy) represent key sections for the early Pleistocene; they were deposited continuously within a frame of climate change, recording the Calabrian cooling as testified by the occurrence of the “northern guests,” such as the bivalve Arctica islandica. In addition, although the first occurrence of A. islandica in the Mediterranean Sea was used as the main criterion to mark the former Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary, the age of this bioevent was never well constrained. Here, we describe the Stirone depositional environment and constrain for the first time the section age using calcareous nannofossil and foraminifera biostratigraphy. We also correlate the Arda and Stirone sections using complementary biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic data. Our results indicate that A. islandica first occurred in both the successions slightly below the top of the CNPL7 biozone (dated at 1.71 Ma). Comparisons with other lower Pleistocene Mediterranean marine successions indicate that the stratigraphically lowest level where A. islandica first occurred in the Mediterranean Sea is in the Arda and Stirone sections; these environments satisfied the ecological requirements for the establishment and the proliferation of the species, which only subsequently (late Calabrian) has been retrieved in southern Italy and other areas of the Mediterranean Sea.

Austral planktonic foraminiferal assemblages from immediately above the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary at Ocean Drilling Program Hole 690C (Maud Rise, Weddell Sea) and International Ocean Drilling Program Hole U1514C (southeast Indian Ocean) show a much different record of post-extinction recovery than anywhere outside the circum-Antarctic region. Species of Woodringina and Parvularugoglobigerina, genera with well-documented evolutionary successions within the early Danian P0 and Pα biozones at tropical/subtropical and mid-latitude localities, are absent from southern high latitude sequences. This study proposes new criteria for biostratigraphic correlation of the lowermost Danian Antarctic Paleocene AP0 and AP1 Zones using stratophenetic observations from Scanning Electron Microscope images of lower Danian planktonic foraminifera at deep-sea sites in the southern South Atlantic and southern Indian Ocean. The small but distinctive species Turborotalita nikolasi (Koutsoukos) is a highly reliable index species for the lowermost Danian as it consistently occurs immediately above the K/Pg boundary at multiple southern high latitude sites, which is consistent with its distribution at middle and low latitudes. Also useful for cross-latitude correlation is Parasubbotina neanika n. sp., which first appears within the lowermost Danian worldwide. The geographic distribution of the New Zealand species Antarcticella pauciloculata (Jenkins) and Zeauvigerina waiparaensis (Jenkins), as well as Eoglobigerina maudrisensis n. sp. from just above the K/Pg in the southern South Atlantic and southern Indian Ocean, helps define the extent of the Austral Biogeographic Province and provides evidence for marine communication via marine seaways across Antarctica. While An. pauciloculata was previously considered a benthic species, new stable isotope evidence demonstrates that it lived a planktonic mode of life. It is possible this species evolved from a benthic ancestor and that the benthic to planktonic transition occurred through an intermediate tychopelagic lifestyle at a time when calcareous plankton were less abundant as a result of the terminal Cretaceous mass extinction.
