By the example of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of propane the process of peroxide radicals transfer from the surface of catalysts into the reactor volume is studied. For comparison ZnO/SiO2 contacts obtained by depositing the active phase on the silica surface by sol-gel and chemical transport reaction (CTR) were used. It was established that for the case both the temperature of the radicals transfer from the surface to the volume and the value of the activation energy are lower than in the case. It was shown that the modification of the silica gel surface with zinc oxide by the CTR method is more effective as compared with the sol-gel method. It is established that in both cases the active phase of the catalyst exhibits paramagnetic properties. On the basis of the given, semi-artificial kinetic method of radical detachment, the obligatory mechanism of activation failed.

Undergraduate students participating in the UCLA Undergraduate Research Consortium for Functional Genomics (URCFG) have conducted a two-phased screen using RNA interference (RNAi) in combination with fluorescent reporter proteins to identify genes important for hematopoiesis in Drosophila. This screen disrupted the function of approximately 3500 genes and identified 137 candidate genes for which loss of function leads to observable changes in the hematopoietic development. Targeting RNAi to maturing, progenitor, and regulatory cell types identified key subsets that either limit or promote blood cell maturation. Bioinformatic analysis reveals gene enrichment in several previously uncharacterized areas, including RNA processing and export and vesicular trafficking. Lastly, the participation of students in this course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) correlated with increased learning gains across several areas, as well as increased STEM retention, indicating that authentic, student-driven research in the form of a CURE represents an impactful and enriching pedagogical approach.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication of cancer. This study aimed to evaluate immature platelet fraction (IPF), mean platelet volume (MPV), P-selectin, D-dimer, and thrombin generation (TG) as predictive biomarkers for VTE and further the improvement of existing risk assessment models (RAMs). Methods: A prospective, observational, exploratory study was conducted on ambulatory cancer patients with indication for systemic chemotherapy. Baseline RAMs included the Khorana-, Vienna Cancer, Thrombosis-, Protecht-, ONKOTEV-, and Catscore. IPF, MPV, P-selectin, D-dimer, and TG were analysed at baseline and 3-month follow-up. Results: We enrolled 100 patients, of whom 89 completed the follow-up. Frequent tumour types were breast (30%), gastric (14%), gynaecological (14%), and colorectal (14%) cancer. Ten of the 89 patients (11.2%) developed VTE. The highest VTE rate was observed in patients with cholangiocarcinoma (3/5; 60%). Baseline D-dimer levels but not IPF, MPV, or P-selectin were associated with the risk of developing VTE (HR 6.9; p = 0.021). None of the RAMs showed statistical significance in predicting VTE. Peak thrombin and endogenous thrombin potential were lower in patients who developed VTE. Biomarker changes between baseline and follow-up were not associated with VTE risk. Conclusions: VTE risk was well predicted by baseline D-dimer levels. Adding D-dimer could improve existing RAMs to better identify patients who may benefit from primary VTE prophylaxis. The VTE risk among patients with cholangiocarcinoma should be further evaluated.

Objectives Radiation therapy is the treatment of choice for cats with sinonasal carcinomas. Different protocols have been described in the literature, though a clear consensus regarding the optimal protocol is lacking. The aim of the study was to describe the tolerability, efficacy and outcome of cats treated with a cyclical hypofractionated protocol. Methods Cats with histologically diagnosed sinonasal carcinomas in a single institution were retrospectively included. All patients were treated with a cyclical hypofractionated protocol (‘QUAD shot’ regime). Cats were treated with 4 Gray (Gy) delivered in four fractions within 48 h, with a minimum of 6 h between two treatments, and repeated every 3–4 weeks for a total dose of 48 Gy in three cycles. Results Seven cats met the inclusion criteria. Nasal discharge and sneezing were the most common presenting complaints. All cats presented with advanced stage of disease with CT examination (three with modified Adams stage 3 and four with stage 4). Clinical improvement was seen in six cats. Five cats had a follow-up CT; one had a complete response, two had partial responses, one had stable disease and one had progressive disease. Two cats were still alive at the time of writing while four were euthanased owing to tumour-related causes. The median overall survival time was 460 days. The 1-year survival time was 80% and the 2-year survival time was 0%. Severe acute or late toxicity was not reported. Conclusions and relevance This is the first report of a cyclical hypofractionated protocol in the veterinary literature that can provide prolonged survival in cats with advanced stage sinonasal carcinoma. Its use should be considered in patients when prolonged hospitalisation can be detrimental to quality of life, while still delivering a therapeutic total dose of radiation therapy.

In this paper, we consider the ergodic channel capacity (ECC) of several generalized fading channels for a mobile user that moves inside a coverage area according to the random waypoint (RWP) mobility model. The ECC with RWP mobility provides the average capacity of a mobile receiver taking into account the probability density function (PDF) of the distance between the user and the transmitting antenna, the path loss exponent and the fading channel. It turns out that the ECC in a mobile environment can be written in terms of the corresponding ECC in the static case. Therefore, we use analytical expressions of the ECC of different generalized fading models for the static channel to derive the corresponding analytical expressions for the ECC in the mobile case. Asymptotic expressions, in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, are also provided that quickly converge to the exact ones. Monte Carlo simulation is also used to show the validity of the derived expressions. The analytical exact and asymptotic expressions enable the system designer to quantify the effect of different physical channel and mobility parameters on the attained average capacity of generalized fading channels.

Purpose: Endoscope-assisted transsphenoidal surgery over the last few years has led to more radical excision of pituitary adenomas (PAs) with a low complication rate. Systematic registration of complications by experienced surgical teams could help to improve this technique while ameliorating the patients’ quality of life. Materials and methods: One hundred ten endoscopic procedures were performed in 94 patients with PAs (37 functional) by the same neurosurgical team of a tertiary center during the period 2014–2019. Post-surgical complications were analyzed and compared with data published during the last 5 years in the PubMed and Cochrane databases by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. Results: The overall complication rate in our series was 23.4%. Diabetes insipidus (DI) and intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage were the commonest complications (12.8%), followed by postoperative hypopituitarism (9.2%) and hematoma (8.5%) during the follow-up of 2.15 ± 1.4 years. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, meningitis, deep vein thrombosis, and hyposmia were rare (< 3%). Postoperative hypopituitarism was significantly associated with incidence of hematoma. No statistically significant association was found between PAs Hardy and Knosp scale grading or between patients’ characteristics with the occurrence of postoperative complications. Our meta-analysis including nine studies found no significant differences comparing the complications of endoscopic versus microscopic surgery. Conclusion: The endoscopic approach is safe when performed by experienced surgical teams. CSF leakage and DI were the commonest complications in our series; however, confirmation by larger studies is required. Meta-analysis showed no statistically significant differences in complication rates comparing endoscopic versus microscopic surgery. © 2022, Hellenic Endocrine Society.

In this paper, an airborne multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system is investigated, consisting of multiple users sources, multiple users destinations, and an aerial platform acting as a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. In this context, a novel three-dimensional (3-D) geometry-based optimization method for the relay location is proposed and expressions for the outage probability are presented. The results highlight the impact of the relay position, power allocation, fading severity, and number of antennas on the system performance.

Multi-Antenna communication techniques are an efficient and relatively simple approach for the performance improvement of wireless communication systems. However, the direct application of multi-antenna techniques to an aerial communication system is not always feasible due to the constraints induced by the aerial platforms. Reconfigurable intelligent antenna technologies could provide an efficient solution to these problems and thus they are considered as ideal candidates for adaption in the aerial communication platforms that will be used in the 5G and beyond communication networks. In this paper, a joint Tx-Rx beamforming with beam selection and combining technique is proposed for improving the performance of an aerial communication system supported by electronically steerable antenna arrays. The main idea of the proposed scheme is to select, using an SNR maximization criterion, a pair of beam patterns between each RF chain of the ground station and the aerial platform, and combine the received SNRs under the maximal ratio principle. Initially, an analytical stochastic framework has been developed that is based on a Markov chain model, which is used to investigate the statistics of the received SNR. Then, an implementation of the novel beamforming and pattern adaptation scheme is presented, with the use of Electronically Steerable Parasitic Array Radiators (ESPAR), properly designed for Ground Station to UAV links. In addition, a realistic simulator is also developed with proper channel model selection, by the aid of which, the performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated in conjunction with the extracted analytical results.

One of the most crucial emergencies that require instant action to be taken during traveling across water is the so-called man overboard (MOB). Thus, constant monitoring equipment needs to be installed for the fast notice and detection of the victim to be rescued, if an incident happens. Despite the fact that different installations such as radar sensors, thermal cameras etc., can be handy, a combination of these could be beneficial yet it would increase the complexity. Nevertheless, the full potential may be not reached yet. The key component to what needs to be done in order to achieve the utmost accuracy is artificial intelligence (AI). That is, with the aid of AI, one can deploy an automated surveillance system capable of making its own humanlike decisions regarding such incidents like MOB. To achieve this, fully organized real-time cooperation among the concerned system components is essential. The latter holds since in such dynamically changing operational environments like these, information must be distributed fast, errorless and reliably to the decision center. This study aims to analyze and demonstrate the outcome of an integrated sensor-based system that utilizes AI, implemented for ship incidents. Different machine learning algorithms were used where each one of them made use of information that originated from a cluster of radar sensors located remotely. In particular, the deployed system’s objective is to detect human motion so it can be used to protect against potentially fateful events during ship voyages.
