Passive fire protection materials insulate steel structures from the effects of the elevated temperatures that may be generated during fire. They can be divided into two types, non-reactive, of which the most common types are boards and sprays, and reactive, being intumescent coatings an example. They are available as solvent or water based systems applied up to approximately 3[mm]. One problem associated with the use of such systems is the adhesion of the charred structure to the steel element during fire and upon it. It is very important that the char remains in the steel surface to insure the fire protection. Como desafios, o trabalho apresenta os de compreender, analisar m??todos e diagnosticar as falhas na miss??o de transmitir uma programa????o pautada na educa????o libertadora. Adotamos a pesquisa de campo fenomenol??gica de cunho qualitativo como m??todo de investiga????o da r??dio A Voz das Comunidades, com destaque para a educa????o, a comunica????o e a participa????o comunit??ria. A pesquisa fenomenol??gica qualitativa permite que elementos de subjetividade possam ser ressaltados na an??lise. Os dados colhidos no trabalho de campo realizado por meio de entrevistas abertas, semi-abertas e grupo focal foram analisados a partir da metodologia hermen??utica-dial??tica. Ao unirmos a hermen??utica, que se movimenta na perspectiva da compreens??o, consci??ncia hist??rica, empatia e intersubjetividade, e a dial??tica, cujo ponto de partida ?? id??ia de cr??tica, nega????o, oposi????o, transforma????o e contradi????o da realidade social, o resultado foi enriquecedor, pois um volume consider??vel de informa????es e revela????es sobre o cotidiano no qual A Voz das Comunidades estava inserida foi revelado. Al??m de reunir elementos, conhecer e analisar as contribui????es da r??dio para o Mutir??o, tamb??m apontamos a necessidade de ajustes no sentido de melhorar o envolvimento da popula????o com a r??dio. As teorias da A????o Comunicativa de Habermas e a da A????o Dial??gica de Paulo Freire serviram de sustenta????o te??rica para evidenciar a urg??ncia para a cria????o e refor??o de v??nculos com a cultura local, promovendo o di??logo horizontal entre moradores e gestores da emissora. Trabalhamos tamb??m com o conceito de Educomunica????o, um novo campo de inter-rela????o entre a comunica????o e a educa????o, para compreender as media????es educacionais da r??dio, propor a????es pr??ticas na ??rea da gest??o comunicativa que estimulem a participa????o popular na emissora e facilite a capta????o de recursos financeiros, uma das principais dificuldades enfrentadas. Nossa conclus??o aponta para a educa????o inter-relacionada ?? comunica????o e ?? participa????o popular como possibilidade frut??fera para consolidar pr??ticas e fortalecer o espa??o de aprendizagem ou ecossistema educativo informal que a r??dio representa. Apontamos a necessidade de metodologias que consideram a diversidade cultural local para estimular e manter o protagonismo popular e, assim, criar uma ambiente favor??vel para a educa????o libertadora.

A method is developed to search for air showers initiated by photons using data recorded by the surface detector of the Auger Observatory. The approach is based on observables sensitive to the longitudinal shower development, the signal risetime and the curvature of the shower front. Applying this method to the data, upper limits on the flux of photons of 3.8 x 10-3, 2.5 x 10-3; and 2.2 x 10-3 km-2 sr-1 yr-1 above 1019 eV, 2 x 1019 eV; and 4 x 1019 eV are derived, with corresponding limits on the fraction of photons being 2.0%, 5.1%, and 31% (all limits at 95% c.l.). These photon limits disfavor certain exotic models of sources of cosmic rays. The results also show that the approach adopted by the Auger Observatory to calibrate the shower energy is not strongly biased by a contamination from photons., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

- Abstract
Este trabalho apresenta um estudo experimental e numérico efectuado em placas de aço protegidas com tinta intumescente e sujeitas a um fluxo de calor radiante proveniente de um calorímetro de cone. A variação da temperatura em ambas as faces da placa é obtida através de termopares do tipo k soldados à placa. Os resultados permitem caracterizar o comportamento térmico do intumescente, estimar a expansão volumétrica e a taxa de perda de massa. O método das diferenças finitas é utilizado para resolver o problema inverso, determinar a condutividade térmica efectiva e a temperatura à superfície do intumescente.

Intumescent coatings are an important group of passive fire protection materials, representing about one third of steel fire protection costs. This insulating system is made of four different chemical compounds that can be classified as: a carbonisation agent, an acid source, a foaming agent and a catalyst. When protecting a steel structure under fire conditions, the intumescent paint is heated, beginning to melt, to bubble and to swell, forming a multi-cellular barrier which decreases the heat transfer from the fire to the substrate. The film behaviour is characterized by an expansion and mass loss, producing a foam char with a geometry that varies from 5 to 200 times its original volume. In order to design this type of protection, the intumescence physical and thermal behaviour must be acknowledged, being the thickness and the effective thermal conductivity the key parameters during this process.

Background: First degree relatives of patients with colorectal carcinoma are at a higher risk of having the disease than the general population. Therefore, they should be subjected to screening colonoscopy. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of colonoscopy among first degree relatives of patients with colorectal carcinoma. Material and methods: A free colonoscopy was offered to first degree relatives of patients operated on for colorectal cancer between 1998 and 2000. As inclusion criteria, subjects had to be asymptomatic, older than 40 years or less than 10 years younger than the index case. Each subject was contacted twice, inviting him/her to have a colonoscopy performed. Results: Two hundred forty three relatives were contacted for the study and in 76, a colonoscopy was performed. Among the latter, a neoplasm was found in 13 (17%): One adenocarcinoma and 12 adenomas. Three of these lesions were located in the right colon. The main reason given by the 176 subjects that did not agree to have a colonoscopy was lack of interest. Conclusions: Screening colonoscopy is effective to detect adenoma and adenocarcinomaamong first degree relatives of patients with colorectal carcinoma, however only 31% of all potential relatives agreed to undergo a colonoscopy (Rev Méd Chile 2006; 134: 997-1001)
