Hyperspectral imaging is an active area of research in Earth and planetary observation. One of the most important techniques for analyzing hyperspectral images is spectral unmixing, in which mixed pixels (resulting from insufficient spatial resolution of the imaging sensor) are decomposed into a collection of spectrally pure constituent spectra, called endmembers weighted by their correspondent fractions, or abundances. Over the last years, several algorithms have been developed for automatic endmember extraction. Many of them assume that the images contain at least one pure spectral signature for each distinct material. However, this assumption is usually not valid due to spatial resolution, mixing phenomena, and other considerations. A recent trend in the hyperspectral imaging community is to design endmember identification algorithms which do not assume the presence of pure pixels. Despite the proliferation of this kind of algorithms, many of which are based on minimum enclosing simplex concepts, a rigorous quantitative and comparative assessment is not yet available. In this paper, we provide a comparative analysis of endmember extraction algorithms without the pure pixel assumption. dvances in sensor technology are revolutionizing the way remotely sensed data is collected, managed and analyzed. The incorporation of latest-generation sensors to airborne and satellite platforms is currently producing a nearly continual stream of high-dimensional data, and this explosion in the amount of collected information has rapidly created new processing challenges. For instance, hyperspectral signal processing is a new technique in remote sensing that generates hundreds of spectral bands at different wavelength channels for the same area on the surface of the Earth. Many current and future applications of remote sensing in Earth science, space science, and soon in exploration science will require (near) real-time processing capabilities. In recent years, several efforts have been directed towards the incorporation of high-performance computing (HPC) systems and architectures in remote sensing missions. With the aim of providing an overview of current and new trends in parallel and distributed systems for remote sensing applications, this paper explores three HPC-based paradigms for efficient implementation of the Pixel Purity Index (PPI) algorithm, available from the popular Kodak’s Research Systems ENVI software package, as a representative case study for demonstration purposes. Several different parallel programming techniques are used to improve the performance of the PPI on a variety of parallel platforms, including a set of message passing interface (MPI)-based implementations on a massively parallel Beowulf cluster at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and on a variety of heterogeneous networks of workstations at University of Maryland; a Handel-C implementation of the algorithm on a Virtex-II field programmable gate array (FPGA); and a compute unified device architecture (CUDA)-based implementation on graphical processing units (GPUs) of NVidia. Combined, these parts deliver an excellent snapshot of the state-of-the-art in those areas, and offer a thoughtful perspective on the potential and emerging challenges of adapting HPC systems to remote sensing problems. Abstract: Latest generation remote sensing instruments (called hyperspectral imagers) are now able to generate hundreds of images, corresponding to different wavelength channels, for the same area on the surface of the Earth. In previous work, we have reported that the scalability of parallel processing algorithms dealing with these high-dimensional data volumes is affected by the amount of data to be exchanged through the communication network of the system. However, large messages are common in hyperspectral imaging applications since processing algorithms are pixel-based, and each pixel vector to be exchanged through the communication network is made up of hundreds of spectral values. Thus, decreasing the amount of data to be exchanged could improve the scalability and parallel performance. In this paper, we propose a new framework based on intelligent utilization of wavelet-based data compression techniques for improving the scalability of a standard hyperspectral image processing chain on heterogeneous networks of workstations. This type of parallel platform is quickly becoming a standard in hyperspectral image processing due to the distributed nature of collected hyperspectral data as well as its flexibility and low cost. Our experimental results indicate that adaptive lossy compression can lead to improvements in the scalability of the hyperspectral processing chain without sacrificing analysis accuracy, even at sub-pixel precision levels. The purpose of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is to retrieve, from real data stored in a database, information that is relevant to a query. In remote sensing applications, the wealth of spectral information provided by latest-generation (hyperspectral) instruments has quickly introduced the need for parallel CBIR systems able to effectively retrieve features of interest from ever-growing data archives. To address this need, this paper develops a new parallel CBIR system that has been specifically designed to be run on heterogeneous networks of computers (HNOCs). These platforms have soon become a standard computing architecture in remote sensing missions due to the distributed nature of data repositories. The proposed heterogeneous system first extracts an image feature vector able to characterize image content with sub-pixel precision using spectral mixture analysis concepts, and then uses the obtained feature as a search reference. The system is validated using a complex hyperspectral image database, and implemented on several networks of workstations and a Beowulf cluster at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed parallel system can efficiently retrieve hyperspectral images from complex image databases by efficiently adapting to the underlying parallel platform on which it is run, regardless of the heterogeneity in the compute nodes and communication links that form such parallel platform. The accurate identification of crops is essential to help environmental sustainability and support agricultural policies. This study presents the use of a Spanish radar mission, PAZ, to classify agricultural areas with a very high spatial resolution. PAZ was recently launched, and it operates at X band, joining the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation along with TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellites. Owing to its novelty and its ability to classify crop areas (both taking individually its time series and blending with the Sentinel-1 series), it has been tested in an agricultural area of the central-western part of Spain during 2020. The random forest algorithm was selected to classify the time series under five alternatives of standalone/fused data. The map accuracy resulting from the PAZ series standalone was acceptable, but it highlighted the need for a denser time-series of data. The overall accuracy provided by eight PAZ images or by eight Sentinel-1 images was below 60%. The fusion of both sets of eight images improved the overall accuracy by more than 10%. In addition, the exploitation of the whole Sentinel-1 series, with many more observations (up to 40 in the same temporal window) improved the results, reaching an overall accuracy around 76%. The main objective of this paper is to describe a realistic framework to understand parallel performance of high-dimensional image processing algorithms in the context of heterogeneous networks of workstations (NOWs). As a case study, this paper explores techniques for mapping hyperspectral image analysis techniques onto fully heterogeneous NOWs. Hyperspectral imaging is a new technique in remote sensing that has gained tremendous popularity in many research areas, including satellite imaging and aerial reconnaissance. The automation of techniques able to transform massive amounts of hyperspectral data into scientific understanding in valid response times is critical for space-based Earth science and planetary exploration. Using an evaluation strategy which is based on comparing the efficiency achieved by an heterogeneous algorithm on a fully heterogeneous NOW with that evidenced by its homogeneous version on a homogeneous NOW with the same aggregate performance as the heterogeneous one, we develop a detailed analysis of parallel algorithms that integrate the spatial and spectral information in the image data through mathematical morphology concepts. For comparative purposes, performance data for the tested algorithms on Thunderhead (a large-scale Beowulf cluster at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center) are also provided. Our detailed investigation of the parallel properties of the proposed morphological algorithms provides several intriguing findings that may help image analysts in selection of parallel techniques and strategies for specific applications. This paper describes sequences of extended morphological transformations for filtering and classification of high-dimensional remotely sensed hyperspectral datasets. The proposed approaches are based on the generalization of concepts from mathematical morphology theory to multichannel imagery. A new vector organization scheme is described, and fundamental morphological vector operations are defined by extension. Extended morphological transformations, characterized by Simultaneously considering the spatial and spectral information contained in hyperspectral datasets, are applied to agricultural and urban classification problems where efficacy in discriminating between subtly different ground covers is required. The methods are tested using real hyperspectral imagery collected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer and the German Aerospace Agency Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (DAIS 7915). Experimental results reveal that, by designing morphological filtering methods that take into account the complementary nature of spatial and spectral information in a simultaneous manner, it is possible to alleviate the problems related to each of them when taken separately. Linear spectral unmixing is a commonly accepted approach to mixed-pixel classification in hyperspectral imagery. This approach involves two steps. First, to find spectrally unique signatures of pure ground components, usually known as endmembers, and, second, to express mixed pixels as linear combinations of endmember materials. Over the past years, several algorithms have been developed for autonomous and supervised endmember extraction from hyperspectral data. Due to a lack of commonly accepted data and quantitative approaches to substantiate new algorithms, available methods have not been rigorously compared by using a unified scheme. In this paper, we present a comparative study of standard endmember extraction algorithms using a custom-designed quantitative and comparative framework that involves both the spectral and spatial information. The algorithms considered in this study represent substantiate different design choices. A database formed by simulated and real hyperspectral data collected by the Airborne Visible and Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) is used to investigate the impact of noise, mixture complexity, and use of radiance/reflectance data on algorithm performance. The results obtained indicate that endmember selection and subsequent mixed-pixel interpretation by a linear mixture model are more successful when methods combining spatial and spectral information are applied. Spectral mixture analysis provides an efficient mechanism for the interpretation and classification of remotely sensed multidimensional imagery. It aims to identify a set of reference signatures (also known as endmembers) that can be used to model the reflectance spectrum at each pixel of the original image. Thus, the modeling is carried out as a linear combination of a finite number of ground components. Although spectral mixture models have proved to be appropriate for the purpose of large hyperspectral dataset subpixel analysis, few methods are available in the literature for the extraction of appropriate endmembers in spectral unmixing. Most approaches have been designed from a spectroscopic viewpoint and, thus, tend to neglect the existing spatial correlation between pixels. This paper presents a new automated method that performs unsupervised pixel purity determination and endmember extraction from multidimensional datasets; this is achieved by using both spatial and spectral information in a combined manner. The method is based on mathematical morphology, a classic image processing technique that can be applied to the spectral domain while being able to keep its spatial characteristics. The capability of UAVs imagery to monitor and predict the evolution of several forage associations was assessed during the whole growing cycle of 2019–20. For this purpose, eight different forage associations grown in triplicate were used: vetch-barley-triticale (VBT), vetch-triticale (VT), vetch-rye (VR), vetch-oats (VO), pea-barley-triticale (PBT), pea-triticale (PT), pea-rye (PR) and pea-oats (PO). Six biophysical parameters were monitored through six vegetation indices on seven measurements dates distributed along the growing cycle. The experiments were carried out on the organic farm "Gallegos de Crespes" located in the municipality of Larrodrigo (Salamanca, Spain). The results obtained in the exploratory and the correlation analysis suggested that a predictive model (PLS regression) could be performed. Overall, vetch-based associations showed slightly higher values for both the field parameters and the vegetation indices than pea-based ones. Correlations were very strong and significant for each association throughout their growing cycle, suggesting that the evolution of the associations would be monitored from the spectral indices. Integrating these multispectral observations in the PLS model, the agronomic parameters of forage associations were predicted with a reliability of more than 50%. A single combination of VNIR (or even only visible) bands was able to feed the regression model, leading to a successful prediction of the agronomic parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, there is a growing demand for high-quality vegetal protein food products, such as pulses and lentils in particular. However, there is no scientific evidence on the nutritional and morphometric characterization of the main lentil cultivars in the Western Mediterranean area. For this reason, the aim of this work is to carry out a morphometric and nutritional characterization of the main Spanish lentil cultivars. Nutrient content assessment was performed on dry matter. The results showed that all studied cultivars are large and heavy lentils, except for the cultivar "Pardina". They have high protein levels, ranging from 21% to 25%, which is higher than those found in any other pulse, as well as a high carbohydrate content, greater than 59% in all cases. Fiber content was higher than expected in "Armuña" and "Rubia Castellana" cultivars, ranging from 6% to 6.6%, and exceptionally high in the case of the cultivar "Pardina", which reached 7.8%. Conversely, very low values were found for fat content, varying between 0.5% and 0.9%. Ca, Fe and Mg levels were remarkably higher (from 550 ppm to 851 ppm, from 98 ppm to 139 ppm and from 790 ppm to 989 ppm, respectively) than those found for other lentil cultivars, especially the high Mg content in the cultivars "Jaspeada" and "Microjaspeada", both above 955 ppm. Clear differentiation was found between the cultivars "Rubia Castellana", "Pardina" and those included in the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Lenteja de la Armuña". Overall, lentil cultivars included in the PGI "Lenteja de la Armuña" showed better morphometric and nutritional characteristics than cultivars "Pardina" or "Rubia Castellana". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surgical site infection constitutes a serious complication in the healing process of bone fractures and has been associated with increases in medical resource use and healthcare costs. This study evaluates the economic impact of surgical site infection in tibial fractures in a Spanish cohort. It is a retrospective, single-centre, comparative cohort study of patients with tibial fractures with longitudinal follow-up for up to 18 months post-surgery. Included patients (n = 325) were adults, with tibial fracture, either isolated or polyfracture, or polytrauma with an Injury Severity Score >15. Patients had been surgically treated within 30 days of the tibial fracture by external or internal fixation, or external followed by internal fixation. Most patients (84.9%) had an American Society of Anaesthesiology score of 1–2. 20% of the patients had one open tibial fracture, 12.3% had polytrauma, and 20% had multiple fractures. Most patients were treated with a nail (41.8%) or a plate (33.8%). 56 patients (17.2%) developed surgical site infection. Patients with infection had significantly higher hospital length of stay (34.9 vs 12.0 days; p<0.001; +191%), readmissions (1.21 vs 0.25; p<0.001; +380%) and mean operating theatre time (499 vs 219 min; p<0.001; +128%) than patients without infection. Mean length of stay in intensive care did not significantly increase with infection (2.8 vs 1.7 days; p = 0.25). Total in-hospital costs for patients with infection increased from €7,607 to €17,538 (p<0.001; +131%). Overall, infections were associated with significantly increased healthcare resource use and costs. Preventive strategies to avoid infections could lead to substantial cost savings. Simple Summary: In order to assess the effect of grazing level on milk quality and indicators related to the carbon footprint of dairy sheep farms, monthly data collection was carried out for 1 year on 17 farms in the region of Castilla y León (Spain). These data were analysed using a multivariate statistical procedure that allowed the association of the mentioned indicators with the grazing level and identifying the management system of the farms. It was shown that farms with higher grazing levels were more environmentally sustainable, as indirect gas emissions and energy consumption were much lower. Milk quality from these farms was higher in terms of total protein, fat, omega 3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid and α-tocopherol levels. Currently, there are very few studies in the dairy sheep sector associating milk quality and indicators regarding carbon footprint and their link to grazing levels. For 1 year, monthly milk samples and records related to environmental emissions and management systems were collected through surveys from 17 dairy sheep farms in the region of Castilla y León (Spain), in order to relate this information to the use of natural pastures under free grazing. Indicators were constructed on the collected data and subjected to a multivariate statistical procedure that involved a factor analysis, a cluster analysis and a population canonical analysis. By applying multivariate statistical techniques on milk quality and carbon footprint indicators, it was possible to identify the management system of the farms. From an environmental point of view, farms with a higher grazing level (cluster 4) were more sustainable, as they had the lowest carbon footprint (lower CO2, N2O and CO2 equivalent emissions per sheep and year) and the lowest energy consumption levels, which were gradually lower than those of farms in cluster 3; both indicators were much lower than those of farms in clusters 1 and 2. The milk quality of cluster 1 and 2 farms was significantly lower in terms of total protein and fat content, dry extract, omega-3 fatty acid levels and α-tocopherol content than farms in clusters 3 and 4, which had higher accessibility to grazing resources. Remote sensing soil moisture (SM) has a low spatial resolution. By contrast, to validate remote SM maps, point measurements gathered from scattered in situ stations are typically used. Therefore, a single representative SM value for the entire domain is required. The simplest approach is the arithmetic mean. Here, eight upscaling methods for in situ SM based in geostatistical interpolations and physical characteristics were tested and used to validate the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission observations. Simple Summary: There is an increasing demand for meat products with high nutritional quality and produced through eco-friendly and sustainable systems, such as organic production. Therefore, in this work, it was proposed to study how the main characteristics of nutritional quality of beef are modified according to the feed management system, in terms of grazing level, and the ageing time of the meat. We found that the increase in pasture intake caused calves' meat to present lower values of fat oxidation and, simultaneously, higher values of healthy fatty acids for humans. In the case of samples from organic farming, these showed a higher fat content and lower moisture, besides being the darkest samples and those with the lowest score regarding flavour quality in the tasting panel. Furthermore, it was proved that the increase in ageing time resulted in a general improvement of the sensory characteristics of the meat samples, especially those from the animals that had consumed more pasture. Therefore, we suggest extending the ageing period of beef since there is a clear tendency to increase the tenderness and juiciness of beef meat. This study investigated the influence of the production system (conventional vs. organic), the grass consumption level and the ageing period (7 and 14 days) on beef quality. Three groups of samples from Limousin × Avileña calves were analysed: F100, formed by animals fed 100% on forage; F74, formed by animals fed on an average amount of forage of 74%; and F35, formed by animals fed on straw fodder (35%) and concentrate (65%). The results showed that the higher the grass content, the lower the fat oxidation and the higher the n-3 content, but also the higher the SFA level, the initial Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), and the more residue it leaves on chewing. As for the effect of production system, organic samples showed higher intramuscular fat content and lower moisture and MUFA content. These samples were darker and showed lower values for flavour quality. Among the organic samples, F100 had higher n-3 and CLA content and higher values for colour, hardness, odour and flavour quality. Increased ageing time may improve the sensory characteristics of the meat, especially in the case of the F100 samples. Endmember estimation plays a key role in hyperspectral image unmixing, often requiring an estimation of the number of endmembers and extracting endmembers. However, most of the existing extraction algorithms require prior knowledge regarding the number of endmembers, being a critical process during unmixing. To bridge this, a new maximum distance analysis (MDA) method is proposed that simultaneously estimates the number and spectral signatures of endmembers without any prior information on the experimental data containing pure pixel spectral signatures and no noise, being based on the assumption that endmembers form a simplex with the greatest volume over all pixel combinations. The simplex includes the farthest pixel point from the coordinate origin in the spectral space, which implies that: (1) the farthest pixel point from any other pixel point must be an endmember, (2) the farthest pixel point from any line must be an endmember, and (3) the farthest pixel point from any plane (or affine hull) must be an endmember. Under this scenario, the farthest pixel point from the coordinate origin is the first endmember, being used to create the aforementioned point, line, plane, and affine hull. The remaining endmembers are extracted by repetitively searching for the pixel points that satisfy the above three assumptions. In addition to behaving as an endmember estimation algorithm by itself, the MDA method can co-operate with existing endmember extraction techniques without the pure pixel assumption via generalizing them into more effective schemes. One of the most important tasks in hyperspectral imaging is the classification of the pixels in the scene in order to produce thematic maps. This problem can be typically solved through machine learning techniques. In particular, deep learning algorithms have emerged in recent years as a suitable methodology to classify hyperspectral data. Moreover, the high dimensionality of hyperspectral data, together with the increasing availability of unlabeled samples, makes deep learning an appealing approach to process and interpret those data. However, the limited number of labeled samples often complicates the exploitation of supervised techniques. Indeed, in order to guarantee a suitable precision, a large number of labeled samples is normally required. This hurdle can be overcome by resorting to unsupervised classification algorithms. In particular, autoencoders can be used to analyze a hyperspectral image using only unlabeled data. However, the high data dimensionality leads to prohibitive training times. In this regard, it is important to realize that the operations involved in autoencoders training are intrinsically parallel. Therefore, in this paper we present an approach that exploits multi-core and many-core devices in order to achieve efficient autoencoders training in hyperspectral imaging applications. Specifically, in this paper, we present new OpenMP and CUDA frameworks for autoencoder training.
