Although X‐ray contrast agents offer specific characteristics in terms of targeting and attenuation, their accumulation in the tissue on a cellular level is usually not known and difficult to access, as it requires high resolution and sensitivity. Here, quantitative near‐field ptychographic X‐ray computed tomography is demonstrated to assess the location of X‐ray stains at a resolution sufficient to identify intracellular structures by means of a basis material decomposition. On the example of two different X‐ray stains, the nonspecific iodine potassium iodide, and eosin Y, which mostly interacts with proteins and peptides in the cell cytoplasm, the distribution of the stains within the cells in murine kidney samples is assessed and compared to unstained samples with similar structural features. Quantitative nanoscopic stain concentrations are in good agreement with dual‐energy micro computed tomography measurements, the state‐of‐the‐art modality for material‐selective imaging. The photocatalytic decarboxylative alkylation of 3‐cyanochromones using triphenylphosphine and potassium iodide as photoredox‐mediators has been described. The lower price of potassium iodide and triphenylphosphine, compared to standard photocatalysts, make this method cost‐effective and interesting. Visible light, cheap and readily available substrates, anhydrous solvent and inert atmosphere constitute the key parameters for the success of the developed transformation. Background: The present study aimed to assess the impact of application of fluoridated- 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) with or without potassium iodide (KI) on silver diamine fluoride (SDF)-treated enamel surface in the primary teeth. Methods: After stained-remineralized caries lesions (s-RCLs) creation, 96 teeth were randomly allocated to four experimental groups: Group 1:SDF-treated enamel followed by 8-h/day application of 10% CP for 2 weeks; Group 2: SDF-treated enamel followed by 15-min/day application of 10% CP for 3 weeks; Group 3: SDF + KI-treated enamel followed by 8-h/day application of 10% CP for 2 weeks; and Group 4: SDF + KI-treated enamel followed by 15-min/day application of 10% CP for 3 weeks. Enamel microhardness (EMH) test (n = 12) and spectrophotometric color assessment (n = 12) was performed at four stages: baseline (intact enamel), demineralized enamel, aged remineralized-stained enamel, and after final intervention. Sixteen samples were used for SEM evaluation. Data were analyzed with the paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post-hoc test (p < 0.05). Results: EMH values in all groups showed significant decrease after demineralization (all, p < 0.00001). All samples showed complete recovery of EMH values (%REMH) after SDF application compared to demineralization (%REMHSDF) (p = 0.971). Bleaching caused a slight decrease in %REMH for all groups. However, the differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.979). SEM findings revealed no changes in enamel porosity after bleaching. Bleaching application ameliorated the discoloration in all groups (all, p < 0.00001). All samples in Groups 2 and 4 had significantly lighter color after 21 days as compared to 14-day exposure to the bleaching material (both, p < 0.00001). Conclusions: SDF application on demineralized primary tooth enamel completely recovered enamel microhardness. 10% carbamide peroxide effectively bleached SDF stain without causing significant decrease in EMH values. Color improvement was more evident with the use of KI immediately after SDF application. Both 15-min and 8-h application of fluoridated CP resulted in statistically similar color enhancement in primary teeth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alkali post‐deposition treatment (PDT) of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) film is an effective approach to obtain high‐efficiency CIGS solar cells. Herein, a low‐cost and scalable surface passivation process is reported when the potassium iodide (KI) alkali source is employed instead of the conventional potassium fluoride (KF). CIGS surface is modified by spin‐coating of KI solution and subsequent annealing at 350 °C in a Se atmosphere. With the KI PDT, the cell efficiency is enhanced by almost 20% due to the increase of shunt resistance and the lowering of reverse saturation current. To clarify the origin of the efficiency enhancement, the chemical state and electronic structure at the CIGS surface are investigated. The KI PDT yields a valence band lowering by 0.18 eV at the CIGS/CdS interface, leading to the suppression of the interface recombination. This is possible by Cu depletion and Cu cation reduction at the CIGS surface after KI treatment. The developed process may be considered an upcoming alternative alkali PDT for CIGS absorbers. The results provide the knowledge base for further optimization of the interface properties to form high‐quality heterojunction in the CIGS solar cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a paper-based sensor was developed for the detection of hydrogen-peroxide-related biomarkers, with glucose oxidase catalyzing as an example. Potassium iodide can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to colorize the paper-based biosensor detection area, which was imaged by a scanner, and the color intensity was analyzed by the Adobe Photoshop. Under the optimal conditions, the color intensity shows a good linear relationship with hydrogen peroxide and glucose concentrations in the ranges of 0.1–5.0 mM and 0.5–6.0 mM, respectively. The detection limit of hydrogen peroxide is 0.03 mM and the limit of quantification of glucose is 0.5 mM. Besides, the method was employed in measuring glucose concentration in fruit samples, and the spiked recoveries are in the range of 95.4–106.1%. This method is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and easy to be operated, which is expected to realize the point-of-care testing of more hydrogen-peroxide-related biomarkers. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is radiopaque. This in vitro study compares the changes in the radiopacity of carious lesions after SDF application, potassium iodide (PI) application, and water rinse. Ten recently extracted human teeth were sectioned and divided into two groups (n = 10 in each group): Group 1 = SDF, Group 2 = SDF + PI. Teeth in Group 1 received SDF for 1 min and rinsed with 15 mL water. Group 2 received the same protocol with the addition of PI application for 1 min after SDF application. All samples were scanned with micro-computed tomography before SDF application, after SDF application, after PI application (group 2) and after water rinse. The radiopacity of the carious lesions increased significantly after SDF application in Group 1 and 2 (p < 0.017, p < 0.008, respectively). A significant increase in radiopacity after PI application was also observed in Group 2 (p < 0.008). Water rinsing significantly decreased the radiopacity in Group 1 and 2 (p < 0.017, p < 0.008, respectively), but the radiopacity remained significantly higher than the preoperative values (Group 1 p < 0.017, Group 2 p < 0.008). The radiopacity of carious lesions increases after SDF and SDF + PI applications. Water rinsing could reduce the radiopacity of SDF and SDF + PI treated carious lesions, and might reduce the content of SDF in carious lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: During a nuclear accident, numerous products of nuclear fission are released, including isotopes of radioactive iodine. Among them is iodine-131, with a half-life of 8.02 days, which emits β radiation. For decades, it has been effectively and safely used in medicine. However, in the event of a nuclear accident, uncontrolled exposure can have harmful biological effects. The main sources of internal contamination with iodine-131 are contaminated air, food and water. The most exposed organ is the thyroid gland, where radioactive iodine accumulates via the Na+/I- symporter (NIS). NIS does not distinguish between radioactive iodine isotopes and the stable isotope iodine-127, which is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Exposure to radioactive iodine during a nuclear accident is primarily associated with papillary thyroid cancer, whose incidence begins to increase a few years after exposure. Children and adolescents are at the highest risk, and the risk is particularly significant for individuals living in iodine-deficient areas., Conclusions: Ensuring an adequate iodine supply is therefore crucial for lowering the risk of the harmful effects of exposure to radioactive iodine at the population level. Protecting the thyroid with potassium iodide tablets significantly reduces radiation exposure, as stable iodine prevents the entry of radioactive iodine into the thyroid. Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to examine the methods used to minimize discoloration of the carious lesions after topical silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application., Data/sources: Two independent researchers conducted a search of English literature published up to 30th April 2024 in three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science). They screened titles and abstracts, excluding conference proceedings, books, reviews and publications unrelated to SDF. They included only original research on methods to minimize SDF-induced discoloration. The publications lacking comparative color change data were excluded. Full texts of the included articles were then analyzed. The Cochrane guidelines for clinical trials and the guidelines for in-vitro studies on dental materials were used for the risk of bias assessment., Results: The systematic review included 33 publications from 1,283 identified publications (26 laboratory studies and 7 clinical studies). Thirteen laboratory studies and five clinical studies were rated as having 'low risk'. Three main methods to minimize discoloration were identified: masking with restoration, using chemicals, and substituting silver with nano-silver. Nine studies used resin composite or glass ionomer cement to mask the SDF-induced discoloration. Twenty-nine studies used chemicals to reduce SDF-induced discoloration. These chemicals included precipitating agents like potassium iodide, oxidizing agents like hydrogen peroxide, and chelating agents like glutathione. Seven publications used chemicals (potassium iodide or glutathione) before restoration and six of them found improved masking effect. Four studies substituted silver ions with silver nanoparticles which did not discolor carious lesion., Conclusions: Masking with restoration, using chemicals, and substituting silver ions with nano-silver particles have been reported to address the discoloring effects of SDF therapy. However, most are laboratory studies, and more clinical trials are needed to confirm their effectiveness in reducing SDF-induced discoloration., Clinical Significance: SDF effectively arrests caries, but it discolors carious lesions. Almost a century has passed since Plummer reported the efficacy of short-term preoperative inorganic iodine therapy for Graves' disease in the 1920s. Since there were concerns about the escape phenomenon and exacerbation with inorganic iodine, antithyroid drugs became the mainstay of pharmacotherapy for Graves' disease following their development in the 1940s. With regard to long-term inorganic iodine monotherapy, Trousseau reported a case in the 1860s, and several subsequent reports suggested its efficacy. Around 1930, Thompson et al. published a number of papers and concluded that long-term inorganic iodine monotherapy was useful if limited to mild cases under careful follow-up. From Japan, in 1970, Nagataki et al. reported that, of 12 patients treated with inorganic iodine, three remained eumetabolic for more than two years. Since 2014, some reports have also been published from Japan. A summary of these recent reports is given below. The starting dose of potassium iodide is around 50 mg/day, and candidate responders have mild disease, with FT4 <2.76 ng/dL (35.5 pmol/L), a small goiter, and are female and elderly. Response rates are relatively high, at 60-80%, and the remission rate is about 40%. In cases of insufficient response, changing therapy should be considered. Inorganic iodine can be used as a possible alternative if the patient experiences adverse events with antithyroid drugs and/or prefers conservative treatments, with an understanding of their efficacy and limitations. These recent reports have been published from Japan, where iodine is sufficient, and the dose of inorganic iodine is empirical and requires further study.

Objective:  This study aimed to investigate and contrast the degree of dentin discoloration resulting from the application of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) alone, SDF in combination with potassium iodide (KI), and SDF in combination with glutathione. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of these combinations in reducing the aesthetic issues associated with SDF treatment in minimally invasive dentistry and preventive procedures., Methodology: We conducted this in-vitro study on 136 permanent molar teeth. The teeth were randomly assigned to two main groups of total-etch and self-etch and four subgroups of control, SDF, SDF plus KI, and SDF with glutathione. The teeth underwent colorimetry before and 1 week after applying materials to compare the color change. We mounted the teeth in acrylic resin 1 mm below their cementoenamel junction. A low-speed diamond saw and 600-grit silicon carbide abrasive paper eliminated the occlusal enamel for 10 seconds under water coolant, exposing the dentin. The teeth were then immersed in a demineralizing solution (pH of 4.4, 50 mmol acetate, 2.2 mmol potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 2.2 mmol calcium chloride) for 7 days at 37°C to induce dentin demineralization and simulate demineralized dentin artificially. The teeth were then gently polished with 600-grit silicon carbide abrasive paper to create a standard smear layer and eliminate the demineralized dentin layer., Results: 136 teeth were evaluated in the total-etch (n = 68) and self-etch (n = 68) groups. Glutathione and KI significantly decreased the discoloration caused by SDF (P<0.05). No significant difference was noted in color change between SDF/glutathione and SDF plus KI groups (P > 0.05). In self-etch groups, glutathione yielded an ∆E=4.12, while KI yielded an ∆E=4.44, with no significant difference., Conclusion: The application of glutathione and KI can significantly decrease dentin discoloration caused by SDF., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Dental caries prevention using an application of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is an emerging advanced treatment modality in pediatric dentistry. However, a major drawback of SDF application is the black staining of carious lesions, which limits its clinical use due to esthetic concerns. Improving the esthetic outcome by reducing black staining would significantly enhance the opportunity for the universal use of SDF. This case series comprises three cases demonstrating the clinical success of using potassium iodide (KI) to reduce staining, followed by glass ionomer cement (GIC) restoration in primary molars. Upon 12-month follow-up visits, the treated teeth remained clinically asymptomatic, with esthetically acceptable restoration margins. Additionally, the esthetic results were acceptable to both parents and patients. The significance of utilizing KI and GIC following SDF application lies in their synergistic effect on masking discoloration resulting from SDF treatment while enhancing tooth functionality, thereby meeting patients' esthetic requirements and improving chewing efficiency., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate antibacterial effects of silver diamine fluoride (SDF), SDF/potassium iodide (KI), and nanosilver fluoride (NSF)., Methods: Antimicrobial activity of sterile saline, 5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), SDF, SDF/KI, NSF, and KI solutions against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei was assessed through disc diffusion tests. A dual-species biofilm of S. mutans-L. casei was formed on 48 enamel samples, divided into six groups (n = 8). Group 1 was treated with sterile saline, Group 2 with 5% NaOCl, Group 3 with 2% CHX, Group 4 with SDF, Group 5 with SDF/KI, and Group 6 with NSF. The samples were analysed using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistical analysis utilized Shapiro-Wilk and Kruskal-Wallis tests and multiple comparisons were conducted using Dunn test., Results: SDF, SDF/KI, and NaOCl displayed significantly higher antibacterial activity against dual-species biofilm compared to NSF and CHX (p < 0.050)., Conclusions: In conclusion, SDF and SDF/KI demonstrated greater antibacterial activity than NSF. SDF's antibacterial activity was unaffected by KI. Further research is needed to determine the appropriate content and concentration for achieving effective antibacterial activity with NSF., Clinical Significance: The use of silver-containing materials is increasing in popularity within pediatric dentistry. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is now considered as an efficient, non-invasive material that can be used in prevention and arresting of dental caries. Potassium iodide (KI) is used to reduce the dental staining produced by SDF. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of SDF+KI application on demineralized dentin immediately after application and 3 days after a simulated caries attack. Materials and methods. Demineralized dentin specimens were treated by applying SDF-KI. Half of the specimens were stored in lactate buffer solution for 3 days. The specimens were subsequently analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results. SEM evaluation of SDF+KI treated specimens showed a thin continuous layer of material covering the dentin surface. The EDS analysis showed decreasing percentages of silver and iodine, concurrent with the increase of calcium and phosphate concentrations from the external surface towards the inner dentin. The specimens subjected to the acidic challenge after SDF+KI application showed the same pattern of element distribution. Conclusions. The application of SDF-KI on demineralized dentin resulted in the formation of an external layer containing high percentages of silver and iodine. The silver-rich layer was resistant to acidic challenge and effective in protecting the subjacent dentin from further demineralization.

Abstract Background Globally, has been an increase in the use of silver fluoride products to arrest carious lesions and a variety of products are available. Objectives To examine differences in caries arrest and lesion colour of primary tooth carious lesions. Material and Methods A four‐armed, parallel‐design cluster‐randomised controlled trial which investigated four protocols for caries arrest at 6m and 12m. Children in Group 1 and Group 2 received Rivastar Silver Diammine Fluoride (SDF), and children in Group 3 and Group 4 received a stabilised aqueous silver fluoride solution (AgF). Children in Group 2 and Group 4 received an additional application of KI immediately after the fluoride. Differences in caries arrest and lesion appearance were examined at 6m and 12m using two level logistic regression modelling. Results The arrest rate varied by group membership; group 1 and group 3 had higher arrest rates (77.3% and 75.3% respectively) than group 2 and group 4 (65.4% and 51.2% respectively). The use of KI was also associated with lower odds of arrest (12m OR 0.25; CI 0.19, 0.34) and higher odds of avoiding black discolouration (12m OR 6.08; 2.36, 15.67). Conclusions Globally, has been an increase in the use of silver fluoride products to arrest carious lesions and a variety of products are available. This study demonstrated that both AgF and SDF can effectively arrest carious lesions on primary teeth. The use of KI is associated with poorer caries control but better aesthetic outcomes.

Prophylaxis by “KI 65 mg, breakable tablet” is a pharmacological countermeasure of radiological protection adapted for the prevention of thyroid cancer after exposure to radioactive iodine. A first modification of the marketing authorization of “KI 65 mg, breakable tablet” for repeated prophylaxis for adults and children above 12 years old was obtained in France in 2020. At this point in time it is recommended to exclude the repeated intake of “KI- 65 mg, breakable tablet” by pregnant and breastfeeding women and children below 12 years old, who should consequently be subjected to a priority evacuation from the contaminated zone. Regulatory toxicology studies are underway in order to support an upcoming proposal of modification of the marketing authorization of “KI- 65 mg, breakable tablet” for repeated prophylaxis for pregnant women and children below 12 years old.
