Although regional and seasonal water scarcity occurs frequently in China, and the contradiction among domestic, production and ecological water is prominent in some watersheds, the Chinese government still attaches great importance to the determination and implementation of ecological flow of rivers or lakes. Practitioners have been seeking methods to determine the ecological flow of rivers or lakes and how to ensure its implementation. Taking the Dingnan River watershed as a case, drawing on the experience of ‘Hedging rule’, the ‘Determination-Assessment-Reduction’ for the ecological flow nexus approach (the D-A-R approach) is introduced, which includes the determination of the annual ecological flow process through the river section, the assessment of water scarcity degree of the watershed and various water reduction strategies, respectively, and respond to the three scenarios of ‘general type, saving type and constrained type’ during the gap period. The results show that it is possible to use the D-A-R approach to proactively and dynamically adjust the ecological flow according to the probability estimate of that amount of water inflow per month, which the adjusted ecological flow threshold can better adapt to water scarcity at different levels and alleviate the contradiction among domestic, production and ecological water in the watershed during the dry period. HIGHLIGHTS Drawing on the experience of the ‘Hedging rule’, the ‘synchronous reduction strategy’ about the demand for domestic, production and ecological water is proposed.; The D-A-R approach is an ecological flow determination approach combined with assessment and reduction.; The new approach is proposed to strengthen water allocation to water users with potential future water scarcity to degrade the probability of suffering more serious water scarcity events in the later stage.;

Abstract Background The pattern of changes in the cervical spine and the spinal cord and their dynamic characteristics in patients with cervical spinal cord injury without fracture and dislocation remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamic changes in the cervical spine and spinal cord from C2/3 to C7/T1 in different positions by using kinematic magnetic resonance imaging in patients with cervical spinal cord injury without fracture and dislocation. This study was approved by the ethics committee of Yuebei People's Hospital. Methods Using median sagittal T2-weighted images for 16 patients with cervical spinal cord injury without fracture and dislocation who underwent cervical kinematic MRI, the anterior space available for the cord, spinal cord diameter, posterior space available for the cord from C2/3 to C7/T1, and Muhle’s grade were determined. The spinal canal diameter was calculated by adding the anterior space available for the cord, spinal cord diameter, and posterior space available for the cord. Results The anterior space available for the cord, posterior space available for the cord, and spinal canal diameters at C2/3 and C7/T1 were significantly higher than those from C3/4 to C6/7. Muhle’s grades at C2/3 and C7/T1 were significantly lower than those at the other levels. Spinal canal diameter was lower in extension than in the neutral and flexion positions. In the operated segments, significantly lesser space was available for the cord (anterior space available for the cord + posterior space available for the cord), and the spinal cord diameter/spinal canal diameter ratio was higher than those in the C2/3, C7/T1, and non-operated segments. Conclusion Kinematic MRI demonstrated dynamic pathoanatomical changes, such as canal stenosis in different positions, in patients with cervical spinal cord injury without fracture and dislocation. The injured segment had a small canal diameter, high Muhle’s grade, low space available for the cord, and high spinal cord diameter/spinal canal diameter ratio.

With advanced artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques, a growing number of data sources are playing more and more critical roles in planning and operating transportation services. The General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), with standard open-source data in both static and real-time formats, is being widely used in public transport planning and operation management. However, compared to other extensively studied data sources such as smart card data and GPS trajectory data, the GTFS data lacks proper investigation yet. Utilization of the GTFS data is challenging for both transport planners and researchers due to its difficulty and complexity of understanding, processing, and leveraging the raw data. In this paper, a GTFS data acquisition and processing framework is proposed to offer an efficient and effective benchmark tool for converting and fusing the GTFS data to a ready-to-use format. To validate and test the proposed framework, a multivariate multistep Long Short-Term Memory is developed to predict train delay with minor anomaly in Sydney as a case study. The contribution of this new framework will render great potential for broader applications and deeper research.

Tunas are among the most economically important fish species and play critical roles in food composition and nutrition of humans. As apex predators, they also keep the marine ecosystem healthy and balanced. Both natural and human factors influence the status of this important marine resource and their habitats. There is a large cadre of studies on how tunas are of great significance to the exploitation and management of their fisheries, yet there are few summaries of this research. We aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively synthesize the global knowledge structure and emerging trends in tuna research using bibliometric software. References with ''Tuna'', ''Katsuwonus'', or ''Thunnus'' as the subject in the Web of Science Core Collection Database from 1995 to 2019 were visually analyzed using CiteSpace. Publication rate and output, active countries, institutions, authors, and co-cited references were performed. Results suggested that the number of international tuna research papers increased significantly between 2000 and 2010, as a considerable number of high-impact articles emerged during this period. Researchers paid more attention to 19 main topics during this period, notably ''overfishing'', ''bycatch'', ''climate change'', ''marine pollution'', and ''fish management'', which all posed potential risks and challenges to tuna survival. Future research should emphasize resolving these challenges and building international cooperation for the proper management of tuna populations.

[Objective] The ecological water requirement for restoring an area of damaged vegetation in an arid environment was analyzed in order to provide a scientific basis for determining the water resources required in different stages of ecological restoration and the optimal allocation of water resources. [Methods] Based on a series of Landsat images acquired in 1990, 2000, 2010, 2015, and 2020, the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of vegetation water consumption and ecological restoration water demand in the plain area of Habahe County, Xinjiang Wei Autonomous Region were quantitatively analyzed by remote sensing technology combined with an improved Penman formula method. [Results] ① From 1990 to 2020, the average water consumption of natural vegetation was 7.55×108 m3, and decreased at a rate of 3.60×107 m3/5 yr. Correspondingly, the area of natural vegetation decreased at a rate of 17.36 km2/yr, and the vegetation coverage changed from high vegetation coverage to medium vegetation coverage, resulting in serious ecological damage. ② There were great differences in the spatial and temporal distributions of vegetation water consumption in the region: the spatially high values were mainly located in the Haba River basin, while the vegetation water consumption in the Bie River basin was generally low. Temporally, vegetation water consumption in 2000 was the highest, and vegetation water consumption in a given year was mainly concentrated in the middle growth period. ③ The ecological restoration water demand in an oasis area was 4.62×108 m3 for maintaining the status quo (2020), 6.65×108 m3 for restoring to the average ecological level from 1990 to 2020, and 9.55×108 m3 for reaching the best ecological level from 1990 to 2020 (2000). [Conclusion] Under the dual actions of human activities and nature, the ecological environment of the irrigation area showed a degradation trend from 1990 to 2020, and the spatial distribution of ecological water consumption was unbalanced. The spatial and temporal allocation of water demand for ecological restoration of an area of damaged vegetation should be optimized and improved according to the spatial and temporal distribution of water consumption.

Abstract The femtosecond time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (fs-ISRS) has been performed to study the low frequency lattice mode dynamics of the RDX crystal. Through Fourier filtering, four lattice mode dynamics is distinguished from the time-resolved spectrum. And the wavenumbers and time constants of these four lattice modes are determined by fitting their dynamic curves. The energy dispersion paths of these four lattice modes are deduced from these fitting parameters. Compared with the other three lattice modes, the lattice mode with wavenumber 30 cm−1 has a very longer life time. We consider that the excitation of this lattice mode more likely to cause the damage of the intermolecular interaction under the strong external stimulation.

Abstract This paper uses a combination of EDXRF and LA-ICP-MS to analyse the chemical components including major elements and REE composition of the accompanying celadon from four different periods of tomb at the Yutu Hill burial complex on the Xunyang city site for sourcing their provenance. The combination of the two analytical methods not only provides additional data and information to explore the provenance of the accompanying celadon in the burials, but also validates the data’s accuracy. A comparison with the chemical composition of the products from several kiln sites producing celadon revealed that burials from the Eastern Han period (25–220 A.D) to the Tang dynasty (618–907 A.D) included celadon from the Hongzhou kiln, indicating the connection between the Xunyang city site and the Hongzhou kiln during these two periods. In addition, the REE composition of the accompanying celadon in tombs from the Six Dynasties (222–589 A.D) and the Sui dynasty (581–618 A.D) is very similar to that of Yue kiln celadon, despite their strikingly different appearance and shape. This paper deduces, based on the previous distribution of Yue kiln products in the Jiangxi region, that only the upper classes collected Yue kiln products during the initial period of their entry into Jiangxi during the Jin dynasty (266–420 A.D), but that during the later period of the Six Dynasties, the commoner classes also began to collect Yue kiln products.

To date, there is little information about the demography of vasectomy reversal (VR) patients or the factors currently influencing VR effectiveness in China, especially after the universal two-child policy was released in 2015. In this research, demographic data and perioperative medical records of VR patients were extracted from seven major hospitals in different provinces or municipalities of China. Meanwhile, a telephone survey of the patients was conducted to collect follow-up information. Eventually, 448 VR cases from the past 13 years were included. The results were analyzed by stratified comparison to investigate factors that can influence postoperative vas deferens patency and pregnancy rate. Appropriately statistical methods were used, and all of the protocols were approved by the Ethics Committees of the institutes in this research. The results showed that the annual operation volume of VR quadrupled after the two-child policy was implemented. Nonmicrosurgery and a long duration of vasectomy were significantly associated with a lower patency rate. A follow-up survey showed that the general postoperative pregnancy rate was 27.2%. For female partners over the age of 35 years, the postoperative pregnancy rate showed a more severe decline, but only 35.5% of them had been given a fertility examination before their husbands' VR surgery. Our work revealed that more patients in China have been demanding VR in recent years. High-quality microsurgery and a short duration of vasectomy are crucial for restoring patency by VR. Clinical andrologists should perform a preoperative fertility evaluation of the patients' female partners.

The nutrient availability of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) has been decreasing due to a decline in the biological function of yellow soil, limiting potato yield (PY). Increasing biochar or organic fertilizer input is an effective way to improve soil microbiological fertility. However, indexes to regulate soil microbiological fertility using biochar and organic fertilizer individually or in combination and these indexes’ associations with PY remain unclear. In this study, four fertilization strategies were developed using the nutrient balance method: CK (recommended NPK fertilization), BC (NPK + biochar), OF (NPK + organic fertilizer), and BF (NPK + 1/2 biochar + 1/2 organic fertilizer). Using different fertilization strategies, the eco-stoichiometry characteristics of the soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity; the bioavailability of C, N, and P; and the differences in PY were investigated, and the direct and indirect effects of these factors on PY were determined over a two-year period. The results showed that exogenous organic matter input could considerably affect the stoichiometric ratios of soil microbial biomass; C; N; P; the stoichiometric ratios of C-converting, N-converting, and P-converting enzyme activities (expressed as BG+CBH, NAG+LAP, and AP, respectively); and the integrated enzyme index (IEI). The IEI was the highest in BF, followed by OF, BC, and CK. A significant positive correlation was found between the microbial biomass C, N, and P and their corresponding converting enzyme activities (p < 0.05). The ln(BG+CBH):ln(NAG+LAP), ln(BG+CBH):lnAP, and ln(NAG+LAP):lnAP ratios were all higher than 1:1, but they approached 1:1 in the order of CK-BC-OF-BF. Compared to soil C and N, P-converting enzyme activity was the primary limiting factor for soil nutrient conversion in the study area. BF was less restricted by P and more balanced in its nutrient ratio. The microbial biomass C:N:P could affect PY in eight ways. (1) Microbial biomass C:N directly decreased PY, and microbial biomass C:P indirectly increased PY. (2) It could decrease C-converting enzyme activity, (3) decrease N availability to increase C-converting enzyme activity, (4) decrease P availability, or (5) decrease P availability to decrease the soil C:P-converting enzyme activity ratio. Microbial biomass N:P indirectly increased PY (6) by increasing the soil C:P-converting enzyme activity ratio, (7) by increasing C-converting enzyme activity, or (8) by increasing N availability to increase C-converting enzyme activity. Thus, BF is an effective strategy for regulating the soil microbiological fertility index; enhancing C, N, and P nutrient conversion; and increasing PY. The input of exogenous organic matter can alter the stoichiometric ratios of soil microbial biomass C, N, and P; the stoichiometric ratios of C-converting, N-converting, and P-converting enzyme activities; and nutrient availability, thus regulating PY. Microbial biomass N:P and soil C:P-converting enzyme activity ratios influence PY the most.

To accurately and non-destructively monitor the growth of spring wheat in the Hetao irrigation area, UAV remote sensing was employed during various fertility stages. Digital image indices from diverse fertilization treatments were calculated and compared with physiological indices to identify the most sensitive digital image indices corresponding to these indices. The study underscored the critical importance of the flowering stage in the growth of spring wheat, thus highlighting the necessity of focusing on this stage. This finding reiterated that the flowering stage was pivotal for spring wheat development in the Hetao Irrigation Area. Several digital image indices, such as GLA, R, G, INT, g, GRVI, MGRVI, RGBVI, EXG, and GRRI, exhibited a high frequency of significant correlations with physiological indices during the four primary reproductive stages of wheat. Consequently, these sensitive digital image indices during the flowering stage can more effectively characterize the physiological indices of spring wheat.

Purple sweetpotato anthocyanins (PSPA) exhibit significant potential as food colorants with associated health benefits. However, challenges related to browning and instability have hindered the application of PSPA. In this study, various pre-treatments and solvents for PSPA extraction were evaluated based on color, anthocyanin yields, antioxidant capabilities, and brown index. Browning markedly influenced the color and reduced the antioxidant capacity. Optimal results were obtained with the pre-treatment of “steaming of unpeeled whole sweetpotato” and the solvent “1% citric acid-ddH2O”. Furthermore, the color stability of purified PSPA solutions was evaluated under pH levels from 1 to 13 at 25 °C and 65 °C. The PSPA solutions showed a color spectrum from magenta, blue/green, and then to yellow across the pH range. The blue/green hues at pH 10–12 rapidly degraded, while the magenta hue at lower pH showed higher color stability. Elevated temperatures significantly accelerated the PSPA degradation. However, PSPA solutions at pH 1–2 exhibited remarkable color stability, with no spectral decay at either 65 °C for 12 h or 25 °C for 32 days. These results provide valid guidance for the extraction, preservation, and application of PSPA in the food industry.

Wine grape quality is influenced by the variety and growing environment, and the quality of the grapes has a significant impact on the quality of the wine. Tannins are a crucial indicator of wine grape quality, and, therefore, rapid and non-destructive methods for detecting tannin content are necessary. This study collected spectral data of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay using a geophysical spectrometer, with a focus on the 500–1800 nm spectrum. The spectra were preprocessed using Savitzky–Golay (SG), first-order differential (1D), standard normal transform (SNV), and their respective combinations. Characteristic bands were extracted through correlation analysis (PCC). Models such as partial least squares (PLS), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and one-dimensional neural network (1DCNN) were used to model tannin content. The study found that preprocessing the raw spectra improved the models’ predictive capacity. The SVM–RF model was the most effective in predicting grape tannin content, with a test set R2 of 0.78, an RMSE of 0.31, and an RE of 10.71%. These results provide a theoretical basis for non-destructive testing of wine grape tannin content.

Electrochemical machining (ECM) has become more prevalent in titanium alloy processing. However, the presence of the passivation layer on the titanium alloys significantly impacts the performance of ECM. In an attempt to overcome the passivation effects, a high-temperature electrolyte or the addition of halogen ions to the electrolyte has been used. Still, it often results in compromised machining accuracy and surface roughness. This study applied laser and shaped tube electrolytic machining (Laser-STEM) for titanium alloy drilling, where the laser was guided to the machining zone via total internal reflection. The performance of Laser-STEM using different types of electrolytes was compared. Further, the effects of laser power and pulse voltage on the machining side gap, material removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness were experimentally studied while drilling small holes in titanium alloy. The results indicated that the use of passivating electrolytes improved the machining precision, while the MRR decreased with an increase in laser power during Laser-STEM. The MRR showed an increase while using aggressive electrolytes; however, at the same time, the machining precision deteriorated with the increase in laser power. Particularly, the maximum feeding rate of 6.0 mm/min for the tool electrode was achieved using NaCl solution as the electrolyte during Laser-STEM, marking a 100% increase compared to the rate without the use of a laser. Moreover, the model and equivalent circuits were also established to illustrate the material removal mechanisms of Laser-STEM in different electrolytes. Lastly, the processing of deep small holes with a diameter of 1.5 mm, a depth of 38 mm, and a surface roughness of Ra 2 µm was achieved via Laser-STEM without the presence of a recast layer and heat-affected zones. In addition, the cross-inner flow channels in the titanium alloys were effectively processed.

Timber architectures have arisen as sustainable solutions for high-rise and long-span buildings, assisting in implementing a circular economy. The creep strain dissipation of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) was investigated in this work to understand the inherent creep behaviors of LVL derived from natural wood. The results demonstrated a significant loading regime dependency of the creep behaviors of LVL. Coupled creep strain dissipation that transits/is parallel to the wood–adhesive interface was proven in the creep deformation of flat-wise and edge-wise bent LVL. In contrast, the creep strain dissipated considerably along the wood–adhesive interface when the LVL was subjected to axial compression creep. Further investigation into the morphologies of LVL after creep revealed that direct contact between the loading plane and wood–adhesive interface could be a plausible trigger for the accelerated deformation and the resultant plastic deformation of the LVL after creep. We believe that this work provides essential insights into the creep strain dissipation of LVL. It is thus beneficial for improving creep resistance and assisting in the long-term safe application of LVL-based engineered wood products in timber architectures.

Rehmannia chingii is an important medicinal plant with immense value in scientific research. However, its mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) has not yet been characterized. Herein, based on whole-genome Illumina short reads and PacBio HiFi reads, we obtained the complete mitogenome of R. chingii through a de novo assembly strategy. We carried out comparative genomic analyses and found that, in comparison with the plastid genome (plastome) showing a high degree of structural conservation, the R. chingii mitogenome structure is relatively complex, showing an intricate ring structure with 16 connections, owing to five repetitive sequences. The R. chingii mitogenome was 783,161 bp with a GC content of 44.8% and contained 77 genes, comprising 47 protein-coding genes (CDS), 27 tRNA genes, and 3 rRNA genes. We counted 579 RNA editing events in 47 CDS and 12,828 codons in all CDSs of the R. chingii mitogenome. Furthermore, 24 unique sequence transfer fragments were found between the mitogenome and plastome, comprising 8 mitogenome CDS genes and 16 plastome CDS genes, corresponding to 2.39% of the R. chingii mitogenome. Mitogenomes had shorter but more collinear regions, evidenced by a comparison of the organelles of non-parasitic R. chingii, hemiparasitic Pedicularis chinensis, and holoparasitic Aeginetia indica in the Orobanchaceae family. Moreover, from non-parasitic to holoparasitic species, the genome size in the mitogenomes of Orobanchaceae species did not decrease gradually. Instead, the smallest mitogenome was found in the hemiparasitic species P. chinensis, with a size of 225,612 bp. The findings fill the gap in the mitogenome research of the medicinal plant R. chingii, promote the progress of the organelle genome research of the Orobanchaceae family, and provide clues for molecular breeding.

ObjectiveTo profile the serum metabolites and metabolic pathways in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients associated with spleen-deficiency and qi-stagnation syndrome (SDQSS) or damp-heat syndrome (DHS).MethodsFrom May 2020 to January 2021, CRC patients diagnosed with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes of SDQSS or DHS were enrolled. The clinicopathological data of the SDQSS and DHS groups were compared. The serum samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The variable importance in the projection >1, fold change ≥3 or ≤0.333, and P value ≤0.05 were used to identify differential metabolites between the two groups. Furthermore, areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve > 0.9 were applied to select biomarkers with good predictive performance. The enrichment metabolic pathways were searched through the database of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes.Results60 CRC patients were included (30 SDQSS and 30 DHS). The level of alanine aminotransferase was marginally significantly higher in the DHS group than the SDQSS group (P = 0.051). The other baseline clinicopathological characteristics were all comparable between the two groups. 23 differential serum metabolites were identified, among which 16 were significantly up-regulated and 7 were significantly down-regulated in the SDQSS group compared with the DHS group. ROC curve analysis showed that (S)-3-methyl-2-oxopentanoic acid, neocembrene, 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid, 3-methyl-3-hydroxypentanedioate, and nicotine were symbolic differential metabolites with higher predictive power. The top five enrichment signalling pathways were valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis; lysosome; nicotine addiction; fructose and mannose metabolism; and pertussis.ConclusionOur study identifies the differential metabolites and characteristic metabolic pathways among CRC patients with SDQSS or DHS, offering the possibility of accurate and objective syndrome differentiation and TCM treatment for CRC patients.

Objective This study aimed to investigate inflammatory cytokine expression profiles in the aqueous humor (AH) of diabetic cataract (DC) patients. Methods A quantitative multiplexed antibody assay was performed to measure the expression levels of 40 inflammatory cytokines in AH samples from DC and age-related cataract (ARC) patients. Bioinformatics analysis was used to examine the functions of the cytokines. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and western blots were performed to verify the data. Results The multiplexed antibody assay revealed that the expression levels of IL-6, sIL-6R, IL-17A, IL-8, MCP-1, TNF-β, RANTES, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 were higher in the AH of DC patients compared with ARC patients. However, IL-1ra and IL-1a expression levels were lower in the DC patient AH samples. Pathway analysis indicated that IL-6 and sIL-6R belong to the class I helical cytokine family, which is associated with many biological functions. ELISA and western blot results confirmed that IL-6R and IL-6 expression levels were significantly higher in DC patients compared with ARC patients. Conclusions Our results revealed the status of 40 inflammatory cytokines in the AH by quantitative multiplexed assays. Additionally, IL-6 and sIL-6R were expressed markedly higher in DC compared with ARC, which may play critical roles in DC pathophysiology.
