New biobased plasticizers made of di‐functional glycidyl ether epoxy cardanol (ECard) were investigated to improve the ductility of renewable poly(lactide) (PLA). Compatibility between PLA and ECard was achieved out through in situ reactive grafting strategy catalyzed with Ethyltriphenyl phosphonium bromide (ETPB) using twin‐screw extruder. In absence of catalyst, ECard forms domain ill‐dispersed in the PLA matrix due to the high incompatibility between both phases. When ETPB is added as catalyst domain size distribution of the plasticizer decreased, indicating an enhanced compatibility due to the reactive grafting of a fraction of ECard plasticizer onto PLA backbone. Although all plasticized PLA specimens exhibit lower glass transition temperature, lower elastic/tensile modulus, lower yield stress, and higher strain at break, the reactive blend containing the lowest amount of catalyst, that is, 0.02 phr, exhibited the highest ductility behavior. Abstract: In this work, the synthesis and characterization of triple‐shape and two‐way shape‐memory effect of novel poly(ester‐urethane)s (PURs) made of a poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(ω‐pentadecalactone) (PPDL) segments and N,N‐bis(2‐hydroxyethyl)cinnamide (BHECA) monomer by reactive extrusion (REx) is reported. PCL and PPDL are chosen as semicrystalline segments because of their inherent ability to undergo tensile elongation upon cooling, as prerequisite for the two‐way shape‐memory effect. BHECA is used as the “cross‐linker” due to its ability to participate in reversible [2+2] cycloaddition reaction and to mainly maintain the crystalline features of semicrystalline precursors within these PURs. This novel simple strategy is considered extremely versatile and adaptive because of the possibility to vary crystallizable segments and coupling agents, thus paving the way to the design of a multitude of triple (or more) shape‐memory polymers with two‐way behavior. Feasibility with PURs containing PCL, PPDL, and BHECA is demonstrated by adjusting the shape‐memory behavior (one and two‐way effects), and studying the structure–property relationships of the resulting PURs by DSC, DMTA, and 2D wide angle X‐ray scattering analyses while varying the weight composition of the two semicrystalline segments. Polymeric capsules can have an advantage over glass capsules used up to now as proof-of-concept carriers in self-healing concrete. They allow easier processing and afford the possibility to fine tune their mechanical properties. Out of the multiple requirements for capsules used in this context, the capability of rupturing when crossed by a crack in concrete of a typical size is one of the most relevant, as without it no healing agent is released into the crack. This study assessed the fitness of five types of polymeric capsules to fulfill this requirement by using a numerical model to screen the best performing ones and verifying their fitness with experimental methods. Capsules made of a specific type of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were considered fit for the intended application, rupturing at average crack sizes of 69 and 128 μm, respectively for a wall thickness of ∼0.3 and ∼0.7 mm. Thicker walls were considered unfit, as they ruptured for crack sizes much higher than 100 μm. Other types of PMMA used and polylactic acid were equally unfit for the same reason. There was overall good fitting between model output and experimental results and an elongation at break of 1.5% is recommended regarding polymers for this application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The best-selling compostable plastics, polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), can accidentally end up in the marine environment due to plastic waste mismanagement. Their degradation and colonization by microbial communities are poorly documented in marine conditions. To better understand their degradation, as well as the dynamics of bacterial colonization after a long immersion time (99, 160, and 260 days), PBAT, semicrystalline, and amorphous PLA films were immersed in a marine aquarium. Sequencing and chemical analyses were used in parallel to characterize these samples. Despite the variation in the chemical intrinsic parameters of these plastics, their degradation remains very slow. Microbial community structure varied according to the immersion time with a high proportion of Archaea. Moreover, the plastisphere structure of PBAT was specific. A better understanding of compostable plastic degradability is crucial to evaluate their impact on ecosystems and to eco-design new recyclable plastics with optimal degradation properties. Employing the hydroxyl groups on the surface of Cloisite® 30B montmorillonite (Cl30B), the ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide was performed with a metal-free catalyst to yield a PLLA-g-Cl30B nanohybrid with low Mn grafted PLLA chains (i.e., 9 kg mol−1). This nanohybrid was then melt mixed with PLA 4032D from NatureWorks, which is a slow-crystallizing PLA as it contains 2% d-isomers and has a high Mn value (i.e., 123 kg mol−1). The samples were characterized by TEM, WAXS, SAXS, DSC and Polarized Light Optical Microscopy (PLOM) in order to study their crystallization kinetics in depth. The dispersion of the nanoclay was excellent and much better in the PLA/PLLA-g-Cl30B nanocomposites in comparison to PLA/Cl30B blends prepared as reference. In order to ascertain the role of the nanoclay, analogue PLA/PLLA blends without Cl30B were also prepared. The spherulitic crystallization kinetics from the melt was determined for all samples. The growth rate of neat PLA was accelerated approximately 3 times by incorporating the PLLA-g-Cl30B nanohybrid with an inorganic content of 5%. The overall crystallization kinetics from the glassy state of PLA was also accelerated in a similar way by the nanohybrid addition. Nevertheless, the PLA/PLLA blends crystallized even faster indicating that the dominant effect that causes the acceleration of the crystallization of PLA is the plasticization of PLA by the low Mn PLLA molecules. The changes in Tg of PLA also support this explanation. In the case of the PLA/PLLA-g-Cl30B nanocomposites, even though the plasticizing effect of the PLLA chains still dominates, their action is counterbalanced by their tethering on one end, as they are grafted to the surface of the exfoliated clay nanoplatelets.
