Water structures are sites of collective memory and have a vital role in providing ecosystem services in India. An alternative model of water sensitive urban design based upon the conceptual framework of regenerative urbanism is proposed in Ayodhya, a pilgrim town in Northern India. Reclamation of water bodies is salient to planning the soft infrastructure of blue-greenways for regenerating degraded sites and prevents loss of collective memories and place rituals, both significant forms of intangible heritage. With a focus on the urban periphery of Ayodhya, the article discusses water structures as sites of mythic memory, their current condition and context, and their potential as nodes in community spaces and green corridors of pilgrim movement. This work studies the physical and mechanical composition of soils of reclaimed territories after ilmenite extraction in Zhytomyr Polissya. Namely, the granulometric composition and soil moisture of the reclaimed territories of the Irshansky Mining and Processing Plant were determined. The types of soil by their fractional composition are determined. The condition of soils in the areas affected by the mining industry and reclaimed has been studied at different times. The dependence between the relief of the experimental plots and the soil moisture and the content of fine fraction in the soil is determined. The results of the study showed that the soils are mostly sandy, sandy loam and loamy. These soils are characterized by low moisture retention properties and low nutrient content. The study found that soils in areas affected by open pit mining are undergoing significant changes, which negatively affects their forest vegetation potential, to restore which requires quality technical and biological reclamation.

The use of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is still controversial, especially in managed forests, due to its invasive nature. The black locust has been proven effective in reclamation of degraded lands when native species are not an alternative in the face of the climate change and desertification. Therefore, the importance of black locust in European ecosystems remains a matter of debate. Of course, it is an adventitious species originating from another continent. However, the ecological characteristics of the species in its natural range are very useful for ensuring the restoration of vegetation cover in areas that have experienced significant anthropogenic pressure. This species has a large number of important and useful features that make it an important agent in the forestry system and provide significant environmental and economic benefits. The status of black locust as an invasive species, i.e. one that is capable of uncontrolled spread, remains speculative. Such a conclusion requires various studies, including those identifying exact age of the plants based on morphometric parameters. In our study, we tested the hypothesis that plant height and trunk diameter will allow for an accurate assessment of black locust age. The plants of black locust were measured in the zone of spontaneous self-seeding of plants from a planted 60-years-old forest. The plants dispersed towards a fallow land, formed in the corner of an agricultural field. The spreading began 15 to 20 years ago. The plants are mainly propagated by seedlings. An expert estimated the age of the plants visually. The measured trees were cut to obtain cross sections to account for the number of annual rings. A total of 68 trees were examined for morphometric characters. Black locust communities during self-dispersal are represented by individuals of different ages. The spatial pattern of distribution of individuals of different ages can reveal the spatial and temporal dynamics of the formation of spontaneous populations of black locust. For this purpose, it is critical to accurately identify the age of a large sample. Expert estimation of age is fast and fairly accurate, but it depends greatly on the qualifications of the expert and oftentimes plant ages are underestimated, especially in the early stages of population development. Plant height is also a good predictor of plant age, but the model gives poor predictions for plants older than 10 years. The tree height ranged 2.3 to 16.0 meters. The diameter at breast height (DBH) ranged 1.0 to 17.5 cm. The diameter at the root collar (DRC) ranged 1.6 to 21.7 cm. The age of the studied trees, determined by the number of annual rings per transect, ranged 6 to 17 years. The age of the trees according to the expert estimates was 8.2 ± 4.8 years. The expert estimates of age and the age according to the number of annual rings were statistically significantly different. The expert estimates of tree age were linearly related to tree size, while estimates of the number of annual rings showed a logarithmic relationship with tree height. Expert estimates also showed a closer relationship with tree height, while the relationship of estimates based on the number of annual rings had a slightly lower dependence on the morphometric traits. Regression analysis showed that there is a linear relationship between morphometric traits of the black locust. The coefficient of determination for the dependence of diameter at breast height on tree height was 0.96, and for the dependence of diameter at the base of the trunk on diameter at breast height was 0.97. This indicates a high level of multicollinearity of these morphometric traits when considering them as predictors of plant age. Taking into account the diameter at breast height and the diameter at the level of the root collar significantly improved the predictive ability of the model for identifying the age of the black locust trees.

Jakarta Bay is a bay supporting the economy of thousands of nearby fishermen. Therefore, the reclamation in Jakarta Bay raises many environmental, economic, and social problems. During this reclamation, dredging and stockpiling activities increase the turbidity of the waters. This research aims to determine the changes in the distribution of total suspended solids (TSS) after reclamation using Sentinel 2A satellite imagery from 2016 to 2022. This research implemented the previous algorithm to produce the distribution of TSS in Jakarta Bay for attaining TSS values from Sentinel 2A satellite imagery processed by Google Earth Engine with overlay analysis method in a geographic information system. Spatial data were obtained by extracting TSS values using the previous estimation algorithm, namely the Budhiman algorithm, with a correlation coefficient of -0.745 and NMAE of 0.167. Based on the data processing results, it was found that the distribution of TSS from 2016 to 2022 was at a moderate level, which had a relatively significant influence on fisheries, requiring the fishermen to go to the open sea farther from the coast. This shows that reclamation carries no impact on the life of marine biota in Jakarta Bay.

Microbiological remediation is a promising technology for the elimination of environmental contamination by oil and petroleum products, based on the use of the metabolic potential of microorganisms. The issue of environmental contamination by crude oil and its refined products is relevant in the Russian Federation since the oil industry is one of the leading sectors of the country. Mechanical and physico-chemical methods of treatment are widely used to clean oil-contaminated soils. However, the methods belonging to these groups have a number of significant drawbacks, which actualizes the development of new methods (mainly biological), since they are more environmentally friendly, cost-effective, less labor-intensive, and do not require the use of technical capacities. Various bio-based products based on strains and consortia of microorganisms have been developed that have proven effectiveness. They include certain genera of bacteria, microscopic fungi, and microalgae, substances or materials acting as sorbents of biological agents and designed to retain them in the soil and increase the efficiency of bioremediation, as well as some nutrients. Statistical data, the most effective methods, and technologies, as well as cases of using microorganisms to restore oil-contaminated soils in various climatic conditions are presented.

During the development of coal deposits, acid mine waters flowing to the surface cause the formation of acid sulphate soils. We study the effectiveness of soil reclamation by agrochemical and geochemical methods at the site of acid mine water discharge in the Kizel Coal Basin, carried out in 2005 using alkaline waste from soda production and activated sludge. A technosol with a stable phytocenosis was detected on the reclaimed site, and soddy-podzolic soil buried under the technogenic soil layer with no vegetation on the non-reclaimed site. The buried soddy-podzolic soil retains a strong acid рН concentration Н2О = 3. A high content of organic matter (8-1.5 %) is caused by carbonaceous particles; the presence of sulphide minerals reaches a depth of 40 cm. Technosol has a slightly acid pH reaction H2O = 5.5, the content of organic matter due to the use of activated sludge is 19-65 %, the presence of sulphide minerals reaches a depth of 20-40 cm. The total iron content in the upper layers of the technosol did not change (190-200 g/kg), the excess over the background reaches 15 times. There is no contamination with heavy metals and trace elements, single elevated concentrations of Li, Se, B and V are found.

Abstract Background Coastal wetlands with high biodiversity and productivity provide essential ecosystem services that have a significant positive socio-economic impact. However, coastal reclamation, pollution, and climate change are threatening coastal wetlands. Thus, it is critical to identify priority areas for restoration and improve habitat resilience to adapt to environmental changes. Here, we propose a general analysis framework integrating nature-based solutions (NbS) into habitat restoration to increase coastal resilience to multiple stressors in Sansha Bay, southeast China. Results The total loss of value in ecosystem services due to reclamation in Sansha Bay was US$162.18 million from 2000 to 2015. The coastal habitats were at medium risk of degradation, with some high-risk areas concentrated in the northwest and along the west coasts, which were prioritized for restoration. Conclusions Our proposed framework, which integrates hard and soft engineering such as mudflat renovation, mangrove afforestation, and an ecological seawall, can aid in the improvement of coastal resilience. The project cost was US$12.71 million and was estimated to generate US$36.75 million in environmental services. We recommend evaluating and monitoring shoreline changes, environmental factors, and marine biological resources using long-term sampling surveys and remote sensing methods. Our findings can serve as a guide for government decision-making in coastal restoration planning and management.

Abstract Background Grassland conversion to cropland is a prevailing change of land use in traditionally nomadic areas, especially in the Mongolian Plateau. We investigated the effects of grassland conversion followed by continuous cultivation on soil properties and microbial community characteristics in Horqin Sandy Land, a typical agro-pastoral transition zone of Northern China. Soil samples were collected from the topsoil (upper 20 cm) across a 60-year cultivation chronosequence (5, 15, 25, 35 and 60 years) and unconverted native grassland. Soil physico-chemical properties were determined and high-throughput sequencing was used to assess microbial community diversity and composition. Results Grassland cultivation resulted in changes to soil properties in both the short and longer term. Initially, it significantly increased soil bulk density (BD), electrical conductivity (EC), soil total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK) concentrations, while reducing soil water content (SWC) and soil organic carbon content (SOC). Over the next 35–55 years of continuous cultivation, the trend for most of these characteristics was of reversion towards values nearer to those of native grassland, except for SOC which remained highly depleted. Cultivation of grassland substantially altered soil microbial communities at phylum level but there was no significant difference in microbial α-diversity between native grassland and any cropland. However, soil bacterial and fungal community structures at phylum level in the croplands of all cultivation years were different from those in the native grasslands. Heatmaps further revealed that bacterial and fungal structures in cropland tended to become more similar to native grassland after 15 and 25 years of cultivation, respectively. Redundancy analysis indicated that SOC, EC and BD were primary determinants of microbial community composition and diversity. Conclusions These findings suggest that agricultural cultivation of grassland has considerable effects on soil fertility and microbial characteristics of Horqin Sandy Land. Intensive high-yield forage grass production is proposed as an alternative to avoid further native grassland reclamation, while meeting the grazing development needs in the ethnic minority settlements of eco-fragile regions.

The path toward coming home to an embodied sense of wholeness in queer identity is often a long journey marked by personal severance. For trans and non-binary people, the arts have become an invaluable space for reclamative wayfinding and liberation. Artistic pathways offer processes to (re)presence the severed parts of ourselves that were laid down to survive in a binary framework that collapses wholeness. Here, I offer forward a sartorial expression of non-binary poiesis as a reclamative act of (re)weaving the lost threads of self. In the disassembling of my adopted aesthetic, sewing and sartorial expressions become a pathway home to wholeness in queer body, where (re)stitching binary endpoints gestures toward a third space for belonging. Abstract Successful restoration of human‐disturbed landscapes and ecosystems will be increasingly compromised by the impacts of climate warming. Assisted migration and climate‐informed restoration, in which populations and species adapted to future climates are selected for restoration planting, have emerged as management tools to mitigate climate change effects. However, it is unclear whether climate‐informed restoration could offset the negative effects of climate change and enable successful restoration. We used a forest landscape model to evaluate the potential for reclamation activities to restore western Canadian boreal forest landscapes severely degraded by oil sands mining. We parametrized tree populations adapted to growing in warmer climates and then simulated the planting of local or southern tree populations under different climate change, mining, and wildfire disturbance scenarios. We found that planting trees better adapted to a warmer climate mitigated climate‐change and wildfire‐caused decreases in biomass across the landscape, but only under moderate climate change scenarios. The compensatory effect of planting populations adapted to warmer southern climates disappeared under a more severe climate change scenario. The advantage of planting southern populations also disappeared under wildfire scenarios, generally doubling the biomass loss compared with scenarios without wildfire. With wildfire and strong climate change effects, forest cover disappeared from much of the landscape, regardless of the planting scenario, causing it to change markedly from present‐day continuous boreal forest cover. We argue that such conditions would have large ecological and economic consequences. Scenario modeling with forest landscape models could be used as a tool to identify the long‐term success of restoration actions and to understand possible consequences of climate‐informed restoration.

ABSTRACTSalt-affected soils are a global challenge, affecting 1 billion ha of land, with 200 million ha found in Africa. The challenge brings adverse impacts on agricultural productivity, food security, environmental sustainability, and food security. In Tanzania, more than 2 million ha of land are salt-affected, of which 1.7 million ha are saline soil and 0.3 million ha are sodic soil. To cope with this threat, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of its extent (coverage), existing types, and available management strategies. This review presents a comprehensive account of the challenges and opportunities of salt-affected soils in Tanzania and examines management options that have been observed to increase agricultural productivity in rice-growing areas. A systematic review of relevant articles published in databases was carried out using PRISMA guidelines and flowcharts. This review highlights the origin, extent, types, and various techniques for alleviating salt-affected soil problems. It also emphasize on the use of inorganic and organic amendments, salt-tolerant varieties, irrigation water quality, and drainage infrastructure. We revealed that farmers, use burned and unburned rice husks, sawdust, gypsum, and farm yard manure (FYM) as copping mechanisms. Furthermore, there have been continuing efforts to develop salt-tolerant rice varieties, coupled with maintenance of irrigation infrastructure and site-specific soil management options, as appropriate solutions to tackle salt issues. Given the light of existing data, the review recommends using RS and GIS for updating information on salt-affected soils, particularly in irrigated areas, as an essential component of sustainable management and preventing further loss of agricultural land.

As we enter the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, the need to engage in restoration activities has never been greater. Included within this need is a requirement for clear communication between researchers, practitioners, policymakers, stakeholders, and community members. To facilitate the discussion and assessment of restorative activities, we propose two decision trees to differentiate between key restoration terms (Reclamation, Rehabilitation, Ecological Restoration, Rewilding, Landscape Restoration, Intra-Ecosystem Restoration, Reference Condition Restoration, and Ecological Reclamation) and to clarify how they relate to each other, based upon project scope and desired/intended project outcomes. Continued use of unclear terminology impedes practitioners or researchers from using the literature efficiently, to find precedents that could assist their current efforts. As such, increasing clarity of communications will ensure restoration is discussed within a framework of well-defined and agreed upon terms. It is our hope that this suggested framework will contribute to the ongoing and much needed terminology debate and help enhance cohesion on the use of key terms within the restoration focused literature. Given the increased focus upon restoration projects of any kind, especially during the UN's decade of ecosystem restoration, it is more important than ever that restoration practitioners speak the same language. As a coastal area, Bohai Bay plays an important role in the economic development and urbanization of its neighboring cities. However, its water exchange capacity has been affected by the reclamation. This study uses Delft3D to contrast the water exchange processes before and after reclamation in Bohai Bay. To find out the change of water exchange in Bohai Bay after reclamation, TRACLUS, a trajectory clustering method, is used to obtain the representative trajectories for comparison in the water exchange processes. The influence from hydrodynamics is described by comparing the residual current distribution in the water exchange processes. The comparison of the representative trajectory distribution shows that the local water exchange around the new shoreline has been reduced. The change of residual current distribution shows a similar feature to the change of trajectory distribution after reclamation. This phenomenon means that water transport has been hindered by the inward shorelines built during the reclamation period, so the water exchange has been weakened in the coastal areas. In Sweden, a dry cover solution is commonly used to stop sulfide oxidation and the production of acid rock drainage from unattended sulfidic mine waste. Recycling a non-hazardous industrial residue, such as green liquor dregs (GLD) generated during pulp production, in this cover solution is beneficial for both the mining industry where there is a great need for cover materials and the pulp production industry. The objectives of this field study were to install and evaluate the instrumentation of sealing layers made of GLD- and bentonite-amended till, and to evaluate the practical aspects of two different methods of installation: monitoring wells and pits. This practical field study demonstrated that it is difficult to properly seal the drill holes after installing the probes in observation wells and suggests that a better (easier and less costly) alternative for future instrument installation in a sealing layer might be to excavate a pit in the protective layer after installation of the soil cover and then drill the probes into the sealing layer from that pit. The return to equivalent capability was evaluated on a >1000 km oil and gas pipeline corridor on the western Canadian prairies. Resource constraints limited this first phase of sampling to soils more likely damaged by disturbance. Three pipelines were selected to span a 55‐year period of construction. Data were collected from four transects established within each of six randomly chosen quarter sections (each 65 hectares) that included reference sites. Laboratory analysis provided data for organic carbon, pH, calcium carbonate equivalent, sodicity, salinity, and particle size distribution. Field procedures were used to obtain data for topsoil thickness, bulk density, aggregate size distribution, and carbonate distribution. The Canadian Land Suitability Rating System was employed to evaluate and compare the land capability (LSRS rating) of three pipelines to that of adjacent reference capability. Pipeline‐reference differences were detected in the topsoil for soil organic carbon (83% of reference), calcium carbonate equivalent (62% higher), and pH (0.4 units higher), and in the subsoil for bulk density (2% higher) and electrical conductivity (a fivefold increase). Carbonates were observed more frequently on the pipelines than on references. Soil organic carbon increased and electrical conductivity decreased with time since construction. The mode of land capability was class 4 on the corridor and class 3 on references. Residual effects remained. Neither soil conservation and reclamation practices, nor natural recovery had yet achieved equivalent capability for the target soil group, representing 17% of the extent of the corridor. The United Nations estimate that by 2030 about half of the world's population would be comprised of the middle-class, who mostly live in the increasing number of megacities around the world. Southeast Asian megacities, such as Metropolitan Manila, have long been troubled by rapid urbanization, increasing disaster risk, and the looming impacts of climate change. As a response, there is a growing focus on disaster and climate resilient policies in megacities, most of which have only centered on how future disasters and climate uncertainty would impact vulnerable communities. This has resulted in policies that cater towards relocation of the poor to combat disasters and climate change. This exploratory study attempts to elucidate how the middle-class views disasters and land reclamation in Metro Manila, the Philippines. Using an online questionnaire survey of 425 middle-class respondents, the study shows that middle-class perception of risk potentially amplifies vulnerability and reduces the resilience of the poor. While knowledge about the risks is high, the capacity of the middle class to act is low, especially compared to vulnerable communities. Also, climate change and disasters are viewed primarily as environmental issues, which is compounded by inadequate defenses. Land reclamation, along with coastal informal settlements, are viewed as an intrusion into the environment. This study finds that the middle-class's perception of risk may marginalize the poor by favoring eviction of vulnerable communities in coastal areas, including those targeted for land reclamation, under the pretext of controlling the city's population growth and environmental impact. Mechanized approaches to the rehabilitation of degraded rangeland have been extremely popular since the early 1930s but their effectiveness depends on climatic and environmental conditions (e.g. soil texture, pre‐treatment plant cover). We evaluated the effects of pitting, a popular rehabilitation technique based on the creation of elongated soil depressions (pits), on ecosystem structure from 14 trials conducted at 10 sites across an extensive area (~100,000 km2) of rangelands in eastern Australia. Averaged across all sites and rehabilitation times, pitting had a significant positive effect on the cover of perennial forbs and annuals, and suppressed bare ground compared with untreated sites. However, these treatment effects varied with different site conditions such as soil texture, and pre‐treatment rainfall and plant cover among individual sites. Pre‐treatment plant cover, and rainfall in the 3 months prior to measurements increased the effects of pitting on litter cover, and time since treatment increased the relative effect of pitting on annual plant cover. Negative effect of pitting on the cover of bare soil declined with increasing rainfall. Soil moisture was generally greater beneath pits than either control soils or soils between the pits (inter‐pits). Despite some positive effects on annual plant and litter cover, pitting effects were generally short lived, suggesting that a single pitting treatment may fail to achieve long‐term rehabilitation. Given that these field trials were conducted half a century ago under conditions of higher average rainfall, the prognosis for the success of pitting under current conditions of lower rainfall and higher temperature is generally poor. Key message: Elevated root zone pH and NaCl caused a similar physiological response in all species tested. This may be a result of a deliberate stunting of growth. Surface mining for bitumen in the Athabasca oil sands region of Northern Alberta involves the removal of all vegetation and soil from native boreal forest lands. Revegetation is challenging because reclamation sites have soils with elevated pH and NaCl levels. In the present study, trembling aspen, green alder, tamarack, and white spruce were grown in liquid culture and subjected to treatments with three pH levels (5, 7, 9) and three NaCl levels (0, 30, 60 mM) in a factorial design. After 50 days of treatment, total dry weight, gas exchange, foliar elemental, and chlorophyll concentrations were measured. Trembling aspen exhibited less than 50% survival for all pH 9 treatments, whereas green alder was sensitive to any increases in pH or NaCl. Tamarack and white spruce showed high survival and tolerance to pH levels of 9 and NaCl levels of 60 mM. However, some decreases in physiological variables were observed. All species showed decreases in total dry weight, foliar nitrogen and chlorophyll concentrations, net photosynthesis, and transpiration rates from elevated root zone pH and NaCl levels, potentially due to a deliberate downregulation of metabolism. Also, measuring chlorophyll concentration may provide a reliable indicator of seedling health. This study recommends reclamation sites with moderately high soil pH and NaCl be planted with trembling aspen, tamarack, or white spruce. Overplanting of trembling aspen may be needed to compensate for anticipated lower survival rates at pH 9. Biostimulants, such as beneficial bacteria, biochar, mycorrhizal fungi, and seaweed extracts, may be useful in reversing symptoms of plant stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The oil sands mining operations in Alberta have produced billions of m3 of tailings which must be reclaimed and integrated into various mine closure landforms, including terrestrial landforms. Microorganisms play a central role in nutrient cycling during the reclamation of disturbed landscapes, contributing to successful vegetation restoration and long-term sustainability. However, microbial community succession and response in reconstructed and revegetated tailings remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to monitor the structural and functional responses of microbial communities in tailings subjected to different capping and vegetation strategies over two growing seasons (GS). To achieve this, a column-based greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate microbial communities in tailings that were capped with a layer (10 or 30 cm) of peat-mineral mix (PMM) and planted with either upland or wetland communities. DNA metabarcoding analysis of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS2 region as well as shotgun metagenomics were used to asses the impact of treatments on microbial taxonomy and functions, respectively. Results showed that tailings microbial diversity and community composition changed considerably after two GS compared to baseline samples, while communities in the PMM capping layer were much more stable. Likewise, several microbial functions were significantly enriched in tailings after two GS. Interestingly, the impact of capping on bacterial communities in tailings varied depending on the plant community, leading to a higher number of differentially abundant taxa and to a decrease in Shannon diversity and evenness in the upland treatment but not in the wetland treatment. Moreover, while capping in the presence of wetland vegetation increased the energy-related metabolic functions (carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur), these functions were depleted by capping in the upland treatment. Fungi represented a small proportion of the microbial community in tailings, but the relative abundance of several taxa changed over time, while the capping treatments favored the growth of some beneficial taxa, notably the root endophyte Serendipita, in both upland and wetland columns. The results suggest that selecting the right combination of capping material and vegetation type may contribute to improve below-ground microbial processes and sustain plant growth in harsh environments such as oil sands tailings. Open-cast coal mining is one of the most often-debated industries in the world. Due to the significant environmental and health issues it causes, many of these sites have been reclaimed over the years, and many scientific publications and research has followed. In this paper, we have tried to assess the trends in recent research performed on reclaimed coal mining sites (RMS) by analyzing the publications visible on Web of Science (WoS) between 2015 and 2020 and dividing the research into six categories. The results show that there is a trend of rapid increase in research that deals with carbon and its pooling, nutrients, vegetation, and microbiology, and a significant decline in research on RMS soil physical properties, whereas other categories have shown an increasing but relatively steady trend. The application of modern technologies is also discussed. China, the USA, and India are the countries that quantitatively take the lead in coal RMS research, with India slowly overtaking the US in more recent years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global energy production is in high demand and is expanding its development into new landscapes, including grasslands. This expansion has intensive impacts on aboveground and belowground components of grasslands which need to be addressed during reclamation to promote long‐term ecological integrity. This study was conducted to ascertain how alternative reclamation practices may improve soil structure (i.e., compaction) while aiding in the creation of conditions that are conducive to both the establishment and continued growth of native grassland plant species. The grassland was reclaimed with different combinations of seeding mixtures (grass or grass and forb), ripping techniques (subsoil ripping or topsoil ripping), and the integration of mulch into the soil profile. Year, seed mixtures, and ripping techniques and their interactions significantly affected community composition and species diversity. Topsoil‐ripping and grass‐forb treatment had a higher association with native, perennial grasses while subsoil‐ripping and grass treatment favor more short‐lived species. Similar trends persisted across penetration resistance and soil moisture readings where topsoil‐ripping and grass‐forb treatment were different from subsoil‐ripping and grass treatments (p ≤ 0.10). Additionally, Kentucky bluegrass, an invasive grass species, increased by 76% over 1 year and was more common in the topsoil‐ripping and grass‐forb treatments. While early in the reclamation process, results suggest topsoil‐ripping and grass‐forb treatment are promising combination reclamation practices that can establish a native grassland community and initiate the improvement of compacted soil conditions. The environmental legacy of post-closure mine sites poses a significant risk to the sustainability of mining operations and natural resource development. This study aims to advance the understanding of sustainable mine site reclamation behavior in Canada by using multi-temporal Landsat satellite images to examine the long-term land cover changes at post-closure mine sites. Six representative post-closure mine sites were selected for the evaluation and comparison. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis, Landsat image classification, post-classification change detection, and Regrowth Index (RI) analysis were conducted to assess the speed and extent of landscape and vegetation recovery at the target mine sites. A significant vegetation recovery was quantified for the mine sites that have experienced active reclamation activities. In contrast, the post-closure mine area undergoing only passive revegetation typically demonstrated a slow and minor increase in vegetation over time. The actively revegetated mine sites can typically be restored to a vegetation cover level that equals or is better than the pre-mining situation. This work confirms that active reclamation and revegetation at post-closure mine sites is critically important in sustainable mining. Globally, the number of heavy metal (HM)-polluted sites has increased rapidly in recent years, posing a serious threat to agricultural productivity, human health, and environmental safety. Hence, it is necessary to remediate HM-polluted sites to increase cultivatable lands for agricultural productivity, prevent hazardous effects to human health, and promote environmental safety. Removal of HMs using plants (phytoremediation) is a promising method as it is eco-friendly. Recently, ornamental plants have been widely used in phytoremediation programs as they can simultaneously eliminate HMs and are aesthetically pleasing. Among the ornamental plants, Iris species are frequently used; however, their role in HM remediation has not been reviewed yet. Here, the importance of Iris species in the ornamental industry and their different commercial aspects are briefly described. Additionally, the mechanisms of how the plant species absorb and transport the HMs to the above-ground tissues and tolerate HM stress are highlighted. The variation in HM remediation efficiency depending on the plant species, HM type and concentration, use of certain supplements, and experimental conditions are also discussed. Iris species are able to remove other hazards as well, such as pesticides, pharmaceutical compounds, and industrial wastes, from polluted soils or waste-water. Owing to the valuable information presented in this review, we expect more applications of the species in reclaiming polluted sites and beautifying the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Severe disturbances of landscapes entail an ecosystem development with the formation of structures and functions which may reach either a new equilibrium state or a state similar to the original ecosystem. Natural disturbances can result from major events such as volcanoes, glaciers, or denudations from landslides. Major disturbance may also evolve from anthropogenic influences such as from mining operations. They all can be considered starting points for the development of ecosystems from 'point zero', which was one central research interest of Dieter Mueller-Dombois. In this paper results from research in the Lusatian post-mining landscapes (Eastern Germany) are presented. Different methodological approaches are discussed. The well-defined 'point zero' of the ecosystem development allows for research on chronosequence designs as well as real time series studies. Chronosequences have been investigated to gain insight into the medium to long-term direction of the development. Real time series are recorded to obtain a more detailed understanding. The paper is structured into three main parts: First, effects of ecosystem disturbances by mining in Lusatia and the initial conditions for restoration are presented. In the following part practical rehabilitation measures and land use options are discussed. Finally, the third part summarizes results of long-term monitoring in an artificial watershed. In conclusion, post-mining landscapes allow for relevant case studies of ecosystem development after severe disturbances. Particularly, the starting point of the initial phase is very well defined which distinguishes these anthropogenically disturbed landscapes from landscapes after natural disturbances. Mountaintop removal mining, and other surface mining operations have severe, large‐scale impacts on the communities and ecosystems of Appalachia. The impact of this disturbance surpasses that of other land clearing events, such as fire or timber harvesting; mines remove both established vegetation and soil, but also alter landscape topography. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act legally mandates restoration of former mines after the end of mining activity, yet the long‐term outcomes of restoration efforts across Central Appalachia are unknown. We conducted the first regionwide analysis of the lands mined between 1985 and 2015 in Central Appalachia, and explore post‐mining ecological trajectories. Pairing mine‐footprint and remote sensing data, we characterize the vegetation trends and site health at 71,140 mine sites across Central Appalachia. We use first order autoregressive models to describe the rates of recovery, expected long‐term ecological state, and probability of recovery to reference state for former mines. We found that only 7.9% of sites recover to 95% of the forest reference condition in all remote sensing indices. Overall only 0.10% of sites have a 95% probability of reaching or exceeding reference forests in all remote sensing indices. While much of these mined lands are intentionally not being reforested, 19% of mines in Kentucky, 81% of mines in Virginia, and 46.5% of mines in West Virginia have declared forestry as the primary land use for post‐mining operations. As part of their reconstruction of the city following Allied bombing during World War II, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government infilled medium to small inland waterways (namely, canals and moats constructed during the 17th century) and utilised the resultant terrestrial strips for new purposes. Wartime damage reconstruction was conducted as part of the official city planning of Tokyo. During the 1940s, various waterways in Tokyo were infilled primarily with debris resulting from wartime bombing and, thereby, these landfills presented a model for the disposal of debris from disasters. In Japan, 115 municipalities were designated as war-damaged cities by the government, whose reconstruction was conducted as official city planning. The article examines how common the disposal of wartime debris via the in-filling of inland waterways was. The in-filling of Tokyo's inland waterways caused the loss of watery spaces that are nowadays regarded as cultural heritage assets with recreational potential. Studies have either criticised the infilling of waterways or else underscored opposition to the activity. How then was it possible for the authorities to decide on infilling and land reclamation as city planning? Was there any social support for this project? Relatedly, should the decision by the metropolitan government to infill inland waterways be regarded as inappropriate? There is a serious problem with Indonesia's environmental politics because the government supported policies that potentially harmed the environment, including the reclamation project. Reclamation has harmed the mangrove forest and coral reef, as well as the fishing area. Civil society questioned the commitment of Indonesia's government to protecting the mangrove forest in Indonesia. The problem is worsened when activists and indigenous communities are criminalized. Activists are threatened by legal action due to their political activism. This research attempted to understand the role of civil society in changing government decisions by using a case study of the cancellation of the reclamation plan in Tanjung Benoa, Bali. Primary data is obtained through direct observation in Tanjung Benoa, Bali, and supported by secondary data from journals, news outlets, and official reports. There are two main findings. Firstly, the criminalization of civil society showed that the contradiction between the Indonesian constitution and law enforcement is clearer. Secondly, the government finally canceled the reclamation project in Tanjung Benoa due to massive protests from communities and civil society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The exploitation of natural resources remains a common practice in many countries to stimulate economic growth, and coal is the most commonly exploited resource. However, the mining process often causes environmental disturbance. Therefore, this research was conducted to analyze the ideal implementation of coal mine reclamation in Indonesia. In the post-mining area, the land is often arid, with voids that are prone to flood and erosion. The reclamation of this area is carried out by returning topsoil, adding organic material, and planting cover crops and fast-growing species. When the topographical conditions have steep slopes, scrap engineering is often added to hills up to a maximum height of 8 meters, trimming the slope with a maximum remaining slope of 35 degrees and making drainage channels with a width of more than 3 meters, a depth of more than 2 meters, and an edge slope of 2-5 percent. Approximately 70.59% of reclamation programs in Indonesia are aimed at reforesting mining areas into secondary forests because they were previously a forest ecosystem. The types of reclamation that had been carried out but were still uncommon included aquaculture, urban forests, parks playground, sports park, cattle farms, and fauna conservation ecotourism. A new approach to reclamation, such as ecohabitat, is important to obtain optimal social, economic, and ecological benefits. This approach involves optimizing sources of livelihood based on area rezoning according to the level of interference, revegetation of plants involving the community, and revitalization of sources of community livelihood, specifically environmental restoration with plant species as sources of food, nutrition, minerals, income, and non-timber forest products. Therefore, the reclamation program should be carried out through a collaborative partnership between companies, local communities, academics, technical ministries, and the media. Over the last two decades, social protests in Kenya have shifted to using art. Social protests involving art, such as the 'State-Burial-ballot-Revolution' and 'Occupy-Parliament Movement,' among others, have been witnessed in the country in the recent past. These artistic productions interpellate the spaces they interact with – the street, parliament, buildings, perimeter fences and public arenas – to denounce various issues, such as corruption, extra-judicial killings, political greed and other social injustices afflicting the nation. Espousing concepts of the carnivalesque by Mikhail Bakhtin, this article analyzes street art – street theatre and graffiti – utilized in Nairobi's streets. In examining the literary aesthetics embedded in these innovative creative works, this article shows the significant potential of street art to stake, reclaim and reconfigure civil advocacy and, in the process, spur civic participation in various issues affecting the country today. Abstract Coastal reclamation in several villages in the deep bay of Ambon City has an impact on the environment and causes rejection from the society. Reclamation is a challenge for the Ambon City Government in making efforts to manage coastal areas, in a sustainable manner. In principle, reclamation is a method to restore environmental functions that have been damaged. The issues in this reseach are: what is the impact of reclamation on the people of Ambon City in terms of environmental law? The aim of this research to analyze the impact of reclamation on the people of Ambon City in terms of environmental law. This research uses a normative research with statute approach and conceptual approach. The inventory was conducted towards primary and secondary legal materials and they were then classified. The result of the analysis indicates the arguments to suggest some prescriptions to solve the analyzed problem. Reclamation on the coast of Teluk Ambon and Teluk Dalam Ambon has an impact on the destruction that occurs in mangrove forests, sedimentation, rob floods in certain areas. Supervision by the Ambon City Government has not been optimal to prevent further damage. Management and sustainable use of the environment by humans is very important to ensure the availability of a good environment for future generations.

During the exploitation of coal, both surface and underground exploitation systems damage larger or smaller areas of land. Experiences show that land damage is significantly greater with the surface exploitation system, where the content of the space is degraded not only in the contour of the mine and the surrounding area, but changes are made in the natural flows and conditions as well. The article presents the results of a study of the regulatory framework the issues of reclamation in some world countries also in Serbia. Practical experience of reclamation has shown that utilisation and devastation by mining activities present not only danger to affected areas but also an opportunity to correct negative developments and to plan in accordance with the expectations of the population and respected to laws.
