Abstract

This Report summarises the results of the second year's activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) focuses on predictions (central values and errors) for total Higgs production cross sections and Higgs branching ratios in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension, covering also related issues such as Monte Carlo generators, parton distribution functions, and pseudo-observables. This second Report represents the next natural step towards realistic predictions upon providing results on cross sections with benchmark cuts, differential distributions, details of specific decay channels, and further recent developments.

This Report summarizes the results of the first 10 months' activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Sections Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the status-of-art on Higgs Physics at the LHC integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The Report is more than a mere collection of the proceedings of the general meetings. The subgroups have been working in different directions. An attempt has been made to present the first Report from these subgroups in a complete and homogeneous form. The subgroups' contributions correspondingly comprise the main parts of the Report. A significant amount of work has been performed in providing higher-order corrections to the Higgs-boson cross sections and pinning down the theoretical uncertainty of the Standard Model predictions. This Report comprises explicit numerical results on total cross sections, leaving the issues of event selection cuts and differential distributions to future publications. Abstract

This study reports, by immunocytochemistry. ultrastructure and morphometry, the in vitro effects of SMS 201-995 (10 nhl), bromocriptine ( 1 pM) and TRH (10 pM) on the morphology of cells from two acromegalic patient atlenomas containing immunoreactive growth hormone (GH). By electron microscopy. one tumor presented numerous large secretory granules (densely granulated growth hormone cell adenoma) while they were scarce and small in the other (sparsely granulated growth hormone cell adenoma); fibrous bodies could be seen in the specimen and in vitro. ln the sparsely granulated growth hormone cell adenoma. TRH produced an increase in endoplasmic reticulum surface density compared to the other cultures. Bromocriptine increased the number and decreased the secretory granule diameters, while SMS 201-995 produced no significant changes in the same time. In the densely granulated growth hormone cell adenoma, the three substances increased the number of granules. TRH increased the mitochondrial volume density and endoplasmic reticulum surface density (with respect to the other cultures). SMS 201-995 decreased the mitochondrial and lysosome volume densities and endoplasmic reticulum surface density. We conclude that 1) TRH produces in cultured cells of both adenoma types an increase in cellular activity. 2) In cultured sparsely granulated growth hormone adenoma cells, bromocriptine has a stronger inhibitory effect than SMS 201-995. In cultured densely granulated growth hormone cells adenoma, bromocriptine has smaller inhibitory effect than SMS 201-99.5

Abstract

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. We review the status of the QCD corrected cross sections and kinematic distributions for the production of a Higgs boson in association with top quark or bottom quark pairs at the Fermilab Tevatron and at the LHC. Results for b-bbar-H production are presented in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model, where the rates can be greatly enhanced relative to the Standard Model rates. Abstract

Diagnostic confirmation of growth hormone (GH) deficiency in children and adults is based on stimulation tests designed to assess the pituitary reserve by measuring the amount of GH released into the bloodstream; however, the results obtained by this means cannot provide any direct indication of the amount of GH actually produced by pituitary somatotroph cells. The present paper sought to test the hypothesis that release of GH following administration of specific stimuli does not accurately reflect the somatotroph cell response, and that the amount of GH released into the bloodstream may often be greater or smaller than the amount synthesized. GH release and changes in the proportion of somatotroph cells were charted in prepuberal female Wistar rats, following administration of several different GH stimuli: GHRH (1 µg/kg), GHRP-6 (1 µg/kg), GHRELIN (1 µg/kg) and combined GHRH-based treatments, with or without SRIH pretreatment (1 µg/kg) 90 minutes earlier. Peak serum GH values were recorded 15 minutes after administration of GHRH+GHRELIN and GHRH+GHRP-6; maximum stimulation in terms of an increased proportion of somatotroph cells occurred 15 minutes after combined adminstration of GHRH + GHRELIN. SRIH pretreatment (- 90 min) inhibited GH release, with a subsequent "escape" and lack of response to stimulation which lasted at least 30 minutes except following administration of GHRH. However, combined administration of GHRH+GHRELIN maintained stimulation of the somatotroph cell population. In conclusion, the results suggest that the enhanced GH release prompted by stimulation tests used to diagnose GH deficiency in prepuberal female rats does not fully reflect somatroph cell dynamics, and that not all the GH produced and stored by somatotroph cells is released into the bloodstream.

Abstract

In the Standard Model, the coupling of the Higgs boson to b quarks is weak, leading to small cross sections for producing a Higgs boson in association with b quarks. However, Higgs bosons with enhanced couplings to b quarks, such as occur in supersymmetric models for large values of tan beta, will be copiously produced at both the Tevatron and the LHC in association with b quarks, which will be an important discovery channel. We investigate the connections between the production channels, bg -> bh and gg ->b bbar h, at next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative QCD and present results for the cases with two high p_T b jets and with one high p_T b jet at both the Tevatron the the LHC. Abstract

We present in detail the calculation of the O(alpha_s^3) inclusive total cross section for the process pp -> t-tbar-h, in the Standard Model, at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with center-of-mass energy sqrt(s_H)=14 TeV. The calculation is based on the complete set of virtual and real O(alpha_s) corrections to the parton level processes q-qbar -> t-tbar-h and gg -> t-tbar-h, as well as the tree level processes (q,qbar)g -> t-tbar-h-(q,qbar). The virtual corrections involve the computation of pentagon diagrams with several internal and external massive particles, first encountered in this process. The real corrections are computed using both the single and the two cutoff phase space slicing method. The next-to-leading order QCD corrections significantly reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence of the Born cross section and moderately increase the Born cross section for values of the renormalization and factorization scales above m_t., 70 pages, 12 figures, RevTeX4: one word changed in the abstract, one sentence reworded in the introduction. Abstract

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Abstract

We present total and differential cross sections for the production of a hard photon with up to two b jets at both the Tevatron with center-of-mass energy 1.96 TeV and the Large Hadron Collider with center-of-mass energy 8 TeV, including Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections and full b-quark mass effects. We study the theoretical uncertainty due to the residual renormalization- and factorization-scale dependence and explain its origin on the basis of the different subprocesses contributing to the NLO cross section. Abstract

This is the summary report of the energy frontier QCD working group prepared for Snowmass 2013. We review the status of tools, both theoretical and experimental, for understanding the strong interactions at colliders. We attempt to prioritize important directions that future developments should take. Most of the efforts of the QCD working group concentrate on proton-proton colliders, at 14 TeV as planned for the next run of the LHC, and for 33 and 100 TeV, possible energies of the colliders that will be necessary to carry on the physics program started at 14 TeV. Abstract

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc., Comment: 404 pages, 139 figures, 162 tables. Abstract

Growth hormone (GH) is secreted in the anterior pituitary gland by the somatotroph cells. Secretion is regulated by growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin. Morever, GH secretagogues (GHS) can exert a considerable effect on GH secretion. In order to determine the effects of chronic treatment with the GHS Ipamorelin on the composition of the somatotroph cell population and on somatotroph GH content, an in vitro analysis was performed of the percentage of somatotroph cells (% of total), the ratio of different GH cell types (strongly/weakly-staining) and individual GH content, in pituitary cell cultures obtained from young female rats receiving Ipamorelin over 21 days (Ipamorelin group) and the effects were compared with those of GHRH (GHRH group) or saline (saline group). Abstract

The effect of in vivo chronic administration of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) on morphology and individual GH release in somatotroph cells was evaluated in young male Wistar rats. Over an 18-day period, 30-day-old male rats were injected daily with 1.5 1U rhGH/kg (GPG group) or saline (VPG group) by subcutaneous injection. Electron-immunocytochemical, ultrastructural and morphometric studies of somatotroph cells were carried out. Additionally, rat pituitary cells were dispersed and overall and individual GH release was studied by radioimmunoassay and cell immunoblot assay (quantified by image analysis), respectively. The ultrastructure and size of somatotroph cells did not change, but volume density of secretion granules was reduced (pc0.01) by previous in vivo GH treatment. At four days, basal GH release of rat pituitary cell monolayer cultures was lower in the GPG group than in the VPG group (pc0.05); after 12 hours of culture, GHRH stimulation of GH release was lower in the GPG group than in the VPG group (p

237. W(+/-)b(b)over-bar production in POWHEG

Abstract

We present an implementation of the next-to-leading order hadronic production of a W-+/- boson in association with a pair of massive bottom quarks in the framework of POWHEG, a method to consistently interface NLO QCD calculations with shower Monte Carlo generators. The process has been implemented using the POWHEG BOX, an automated computer code that systematically applies the POWHEG method to NLO QCD calculations. Spin correlations in the decay of the W-+/- boson into leptons have been taken into account using standard approximated techniques. We present phenomenological results for Wb (b) over bar --> l nu b (b) over bar production, at both the Tevatron and the LHC, obtained by showering the POWHEG results with PYTHIA and HERWIG, and we discuss the outputs of the two different shower Monte Carlo programs.

Abstract

We calculate the production of a W boson in association with up to two jets including at least one b-jet to next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with 7 TeV center-of-mass energy. Both exclusive and inclusive event cross section and b-jet cross sections are presented. The calculation is performed consistently in the five-flavor-number scheme where both q anti-q' and bq (q =\= b) initiated parton level processes are included at NLO QCD. We study the residual theoretical uncertainties of the NLO predictions due to the renormalization and factorization scale dependence, to the uncertainty from the parton distribution functions, and to the values of alpha_s and the bottom-quark mass., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

This Report summarizes the results of the first 10 months' activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Sections Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the status-of-art on Higgs Physics at the LHC integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The Report is more than a mere collection of the proceedings of the general meetings. The subgroups have been working in different directions. An attempt has been made to present the first Report from these subgroups in a complete and homogeneous form. The subgroups' contributions correspondingly comprise the main parts of the Report. A significant amount of work has been performed in providing higher-order corrections to the Higgs-boson cross sections and pinning down the theoretical uncertainty of the Standard Model predictions. This Report comprises explicit numerical results on total cross sections, leaving the issues of event selection cuts and differential distributions to future publications. Abstract

We investigate the inclusive production of a Higgs boson with a pair of heavy quarks (t-tbar b-bbar), in e^+e^- collisions at high energies, sqrt(s)=500 GeV and sqrt(s)=1 TeV. We consider both the Standard Model and the supersymmetric case. In both cases O(alpha_s) QCD corrections are included. The associated production of a Higgs boson with a t-tbar pair is extremely sensitive to the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling and may allow the precision measurement of this coupling. In some regions of the supersymmetric parameter space the associated production of a Higgs boson with a b-bbar pair receives large resonant contributions and can have a significant rate., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, use sprocl.sty. Abstract

Discoveries at the LHC will soon set the physics agenda for future colliders. This report of a CERN Theory Institute includes the summaries of Working Groups that reviewed the physics goals and prospects of LHC running with 10 to 300/fb of integrated luminosity, of the proposed sLHC luminosity upgrade, of the ILC, of CLIC, of the LHeC and of a muon collider. The four Working Groups considered possible scenarios for the first 10/fb of data at the LHC in which (i) a state with properties that are compatible with a Higgs boson is discovered, (ii) no such state is discovered either because the Higgs properties are such that it is difficult to detect or because no Higgs boson exists, (iii) a missing-energy signal beyond the Standard Model is discovered as in some supersymmetric models, and (iv) some other exotic signature of new physics is discovered. In the contexts of these scenarios, the Working Groups reviewed the capabilities of the future colliders to study in more detail whatever new physics may be discovered by the LHC. Their reports provide the particle physics community with some tools for reviewing the scientific priorities for future colliders after the LHC produces its first harvest of new physics from multi-TeV collisions., Comment: 98 pages, CERN Theory Institute Summary Report

Abstract

We present total and differential cross sections for W b anti-b and Z b anti-b production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, including Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections and full bottom-quark mass effects. We also provide numerical results obtained with a center-of-mass energy of 10 TeV. We study the scale uncertainty of the total cross sections due to the residual renormalization- and factorization-scale dependence of the truncated perturbative series. While in the case of Z b anti-b production the scale uncertainty of the total cross section is reduced by NLO QCD corrections, the W b anti-b production process at NLO in QCD still suffers from large scale uncertainties, in particular in the inclusive case. We also perform a detailed comparison with a calculation that considers massless bottom quarks, as implemented in the Monte Carlo program MCFM. The effects of a non-zero bottom-quark mass (m_b) cannot be neglected in phase-space regions where the relevant kinematic observable, such as the transverse momentum of the bottom quarks or the invariant mass of the bottom-quark pair, are of the order of m_b. We calculate the production of a W boson and a single b jet to next-to-leading order in QCD at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. 245. NLO QCD corrections to Z b anti-b production with massive bottom quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron

Abstract

We calculate the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections to Z b anti-b production in hadronic collisions including full bottom-quark mass effects. We present results for the total cross section and the invariant mass distribution of the bottom-quark jet pair at the Fermilab Tevatron p anti-p collider. We perform a detailed comparison with a calculation that considers massless bottom quarks, as implemented in the Monte Carlo program MCFM. We find that neglecting bottom-quark mass effects overestimates the total NLO QCD cross section for Z b anti-b production at the Tevatron by about 7%, independent of the choice of the renormalization and factorization scales. Abstract

We investigate the inclusive production of the Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric model with a heavy quark pair, ($t {\bar t}$ and $b {\bar b}$), in e^+e^- collisions at high energies, $\sqrt{s}=500 GeV$ and $\sqrt{s}=1 TeV$. The ${\cal O}(\alpha_s)$ QCD radiative corrections are included and the dependence of the production rates on the parameters of the MSSM is explored. The associated production of a Higgs boson with a $b {\bar b}$ pair receives large resonant contributions and can have a significant rate.
