Abstract

Networks of ligand-free semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offer a valuable combination of high carrier mobility and optoelectronic properties tunable via quantum confinement. In principle, maximizing carrier mobility entails crossing the insulator-metal transition (IMT), where carriers become delocalized. A recent theoretical study predicted that this transition occurs at n\rho^3 ~ 0.3, where n is the carrier density and \rho is the interparticle contact radius. In this work, we satisfy this criterion in networks of plasma-synthesized ZnO NCs by using intense pulsed light (IPL) annealing to tune n and \rho independently. IPL applied to as-deposited NCs increases \rho by inducing sintering, and IPL applied after the NCs are coated with Al2O3 by atomic layer deposition increases n by removing electron-trapping surface hydroxyls. This procedure does not substantially alter NC size or composition and is potentially applicable to a wide variety of nanomaterials. As we increase n\rho^3 to at least twice the predicted critical value, we observe conductivity scaling consistent with arrival at the critical region of a continuous quantum phase transition. This allows us to determine the critical behavior of the dielectric constant and electron localization length at the IMT. However, our samples remain on the insulating side of the critical region, which suggests that the critical value of n\rho^3 may in fact be significantly higher than 0.3.

Abstract

Electron conduction through bare metal oxide nanocrystal (NC) films is hindered by surface depletion regions resulting from the presence of surface states. We control the radial dopant distribution in tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) NCs as a means to manipulate the NC depletion width. We find in films of ITO NCs of equal overall dopant concentration that those with dopant-enriched surfaces show decreased depletion width and increased conductivity. Variable temperature conductivity data shows electron localization length increases and associated depletion width decreases monotonically with increased density of dopants near the NC surface. We calculate band profiles for NCs of differing radial dopant distributions and, in agreement with variable temperature conductivity fits, find NCs with dopant-enriched surfaces have narrower depletion widths and longer localization lengths than those with dopant-enriched cores. Following amelioration of NC surface depletion by atomic layer deposition of alumina, all films of equal overall dopant concentration have similar conductivity. Variable temperature conductivity measurements on alumina-capped films indicate all films behave as granular metals. Herein, we conclude that dopant-enriched surfaces decrease the near-surface depletion region, which directly increases the electron localization length and conductivity of NC films.

Abstract

This special issue features some new studies that are referred to by the editorial team as 'second generation' research in the field of leadership-as-practice (L-A-P). Consistent with this journal's title, Journal of Change Management: Reframing Leadership and Organizational Practice, this issue focuses on those sociomaterial practical accomplishments and turning points that change trajectories within the flow of practice, thus producing leadership. In this second generation of L-A-P studies, writers would begin to establish the boundary conditions that explicitly define the field's interpretation of leadership, especially its concentration on collective change agency. This essay as well as the accompanying four papers, through the exploration of un- and under-explored areas, thus intend to contribute to further L-A-P theoretical development and application. In particular, the special issue begins to resolve where and when leadership within the flow of practice actually occurs, how it integrates with but also differentiates from other plural leadership traditions, which kinds of applied practices can enhance applications in organizational learning and development, and lastly how agency can be mobilized through the interconnection between current and dispersed chains of activity over time and across space. MAD statement This article serves to introduce the accompanying Special Issue intending to Make A Difference (MAD) in launching a second generation of L-A-P research that further contributes to help scholars and practitioners make the transition from leadership as an individual property to leadership as a practice. In so doing, it positions leadership as no longer dependent upon individuals but as a process of collective change agency. Thus, social change would not be contingent on receiving marching orders from others; it would be mobilized from the contested sociomaterial interactions among the voices involved. Purpose of Review: This review assesses the role of wearable technologies in pain management, emphasizing their capability to transcend subjective pain evaluations with objective functional outcome tracking. We explore the types and veracity of health metrics wearable devices track, illustrating how this technological evolution can significantly enhance patient care in the context of chronic pain prevention and management. Recent Findings: The advancements in modular wearable technology offer new avenues to track a variety of health outcomes, including aerobic capacity, physical activity, stress, and sleep quality. This provides objective measurements that can aid in the management of chronic conditions and can offer a more comprehensive assessment of a patient's pain and function. Summary: Although the initial approach to pain management that emphasized pain as the fifth vital sign had unintended devastating consequences, leveraging wearable technology for objective outcomes tracking presents an opportunity to optimize pain management strategies. Wearable technologies capture functional metrics that provide insight into many aspects of the biopsychosocial model of pain. 233. Rhomboid Intercostal and Subserratus Plane Block for Acute Pain Management after Abdominal Surgeries: A Narrative Review.

Abstract

Purpose of Review: The rhomboid intercostal and subserratus plane (RISS) block is an effective, safer alternative for managing postoperative acute pain following abdominal surgeries. The RISS block offers several advantages over traditional approaches, including reduced incidence of puncture-related complications, lower rates of systemic opioid consumption, and more consistent analgesic coverage of lower thoracic dermatomes. Recent Findings: Despite a favorable safety profile, the RISS block carries potential risks, such as pneumothorax and local anesthetic systemic toxicity, particularly when long-acting anesthetics such as bupivacaine or ropivacaine are used. Careful administration with ultrasound guidance minimizes these risks, enhancing patient safety. Compared to epidural and paravertebral blocks, RISS is associated with fewer instances of nerve damage, hemodynamic instability, and bleeding. Research suggests that RISS not only improves postoperative pain scores, but also extends duration of analgesic effect, reducing total opioid use by nearly 40%. Conclusion: Future directions include clinical trials to validate efficacy across diverse patient populations, comparative studies with other regional blocks, and evaluations of long-term outcomes. Expanding our understanding of RISS block application may help advance multimodal pain management protocols, underscoring potential to improve recovery, reduce opioid dependency, and elevate patient quality of life in postoperative settings. 234. Overview and Comparison of Interscalene Block Techniques for Brachial Plexus Pain Management.

Abstract

Purpose of Review: Peripheral nerve blocks are performed using local anesthetics that are commonly performed prior to surgery to either be the sole anesthetic and/or for postoperative pain management. Interscalene blocks are a specific type of nerve block that targets the superior and middle trunks of the brachial plexus inhibiting transmission of pain signals from the upper extremities to the central nervous system making them useful in mitigating pain following surgeries involving the shoulder, upper arm, and elbow. Recent Findings: Previously, interscalene blocks were performed with a nerve stimulator, which is an instrument designed to generate a twitch in surrounding muscles to verify the anesthetic block was placed in the correct location. However, this approach with a nerve stimulator alone is being done less frequently as physicians now often employ ultrasound either by itself or in conjunction with a nerve stimulator to in the block. Several clinical studies have shown that the use of ultrasound leads to improved safety and effectiveness of the interscalene block as compared to performing the block using a nerve stimulator alone. Clinical studies comparing interscalene blocks done with ultrasound versus ultrasound in conjunction with a nerve stimulator have shown the combination to be slightly safer and more efficacious with reduced side effects, though the difference in these metrics between the two is small. Summary: Interscalene blocks are highly effective for postoperative pain related to shoulder and upper extremity surgeries. Ultrasound guided blocks are more effective with reduced adverse effects when compared to nerve stimulation alone. The combination of both ultrasound and nerve stimulation allows for increased efficacy and decreaed side effects in limited clinical investigations. Therefore, more studies are needed to further compare and determine best practice interscalene techniques for shoulder and upper extremity surgeries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose of Review: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic condition characterized by disproportional pain typically affecting an extremity. Management of CRPS is centered around specific symptomatology, which tends to be a combination of autonomic dysfunction, nociceptive sensitization, chronic inflammation, and/or motor dysfunction. Targeting the autoimmune component of CRPS provides a way to both symptomatically treat as well as minimize progression of CRPS. Recent Findings: Understanding the physiology of CRPS and strategies for treating and targeting immunophysiology behind CRPS allows examination of the efficacy of such treatments. IL-1 receptor antagonism, glucocorticoid administration, IVIG infusion, and TNFα inhibitors are treatments that target the immune response and decrease inflammation, thereby reducing pain and enhancing function in patients with CRPS. IL-1 receptor antagonism is thought to inhibit the inflammatory effects of IL-1, a key player in the inflammatory process in CRPS. Glucocorticoids have anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce inflammation in affected tissues. IVIG infusion involves administering immunoglobulins, which may modulate the immune response and reduce autoimmunity in CRPS. TNFα inhibitors block the action of TNFα, a pro-inflammatory cytokine associated with CRPS development. These therapies are further discussed at the extent of mechanism of action as well as advantages and limitations of such therapies. Summary: The present investigation provides a detailed summary of the mechanism of action, advantages, and limitations of novel immunomodulatory therapies and recent studies and trials that investigated these therapies for CRPS. Purpose of Review: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a gradual deterioration of articular cartilage characterized by pain and physical dysfunction. Although analgesic pharmacological agents are the first–line treatment for knee OA, they are not effective for all patients. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of an intra–articular injection treatment using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in reducing pain and improving functional ability. Recent Findings: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta–Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, this systematic review and meta–analysis (SR/MA) provides an updated overview for the role of PRP in knee OA treatment. Ten articles, published between 2016 and 2023, met the inclusion criteria and compared PRP treatment to a placebo control at six-month follow–up. A total of 9,409 potential studies were identified from a review of four different databases: PubMed (n = 4595), Cochrane (n = 4252), VHL (n = 112), and OpenSigle (n = 450). After the titles and abstracts and inclusion and exclusion criteria were considered, a total of 10 studies were analyzed. Although a significant improvement among PRP–treated groups in some studies was found, there was variability such as where the aforementioned scores appeared to worsen and some only demonstrated trends. Summary: Overall, PRP may be a promising treatment for symptomatic knee OA. However, further research is necessary to determine the efficacy of PRP in treating knee OA, with specific considerations for times at follow–up, frequency and dosage of injections, and comorbidities, which were unaccounted for in this SR/MA. Abstract

A search for instability of nucleons bound in $^{136}$Xe nuclei is reported with 223 kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{136}$Xe in the EXO-200 experiment. Lifetime limits of 3.3$\times 10^{23}$ and 1.9$\times 10^{23}$ yrs are established for nucleon decay to $^{133}$Sb and $^{133}$Te, respectively. These are the most stringent to date, exceeding the prior decay limits by a factor of 9 and 7, respectively.

Abstract

The mass distribution of stellar mass black holes can provide important clues to supernova modeling, but observationally it is still ill constrained. Therefore it is of importance to make black hole mass measurements as accurate as possible. The X-ray transient 1A 0620-00 is well studied, with a published black hole mass of $6.61\pm0.25\,$M$_{\odot}$, based on an orbital inclination $i$ of $51.0\pm0.9$ degrees. This was obtained by Cantrell et al. (2010), as an average of independent fits to $V$-, $I$- and $H$-band light curves. In this work we perform an independent check on the value of $i$ by re-analyzing existing YALO/SMARTS $V$-, $I$- and $H$-band photometry, using different modeling software and fitting strategy. Performing a fit to the three light curves simultaneously, we obtain a value for $i$ of $54.1\pm1.1$ degrees, resulting in a black hole mass of $5.86\pm0.24\,$M$_{\odot}$. Applying the same model to the light curves individually, we obtain $58.2\pm1.9$, $53.6\pm1.6$ and $50.5\pm2.2$ degrees for $V$-, $I$- and $H$-band, respectively, where the differences in best-fitting $i$ are caused by the contribution of the residual accretion disc light in the three different bands. We conclude that the mass determination of this black hole may still be subject to systematic effects exceeding the statistical uncertainty. Abstract

SS~433 is an X-ray binary and the source of sub-relativistic, precessing, baryonic jets. We present high-resolution spectrograms of SS 433 in the infrared H and K bands. The spectrum is dominated by hydrogen and helium emission lines. The precession phase of the emission lines from the jet continues to be described by a constant period, P_jet= 162.375 d. The limit on any secularly changing period is $|\dot P| \lesssim 10^{-5}$. The He I 2.0587 micron line has complex and variable P Cygni absorption features produced by an inhomogeneous wind with a maximum outflow velocity near 900 km/s. The He II emission lines in the spectrum also arise in this wind. The higher members of the hydrogen Brackett lines show a double-peaked profile with symmetric wings extending more than +/-1500 km/s from the line center. The lines display radial velocity variations in phase with the radial velocity variation expected of the compact star, and they show a distortion during disk eclipse that we interpret as a rotational distortion. We fit the line profiles with a model in which the emission comes from the surface of a symmetric, Keplerian accretion disk around the compact object. The outer edge of the disk has velocities that vary from 110 to 190 km/s. These comparatively low velocities place an important constraint on the mass of the compact star: Its mass must be less than 2.2 M_solar and is probably less than 1.6 M_solar., Comment: ApJ, accepted
