Abstract

The absolute and relative increases in the number of older persons are evident worldwide, from the most developed countries to the lowest-income regions. Multimorbidity and need for social support increase with age. Age-related conditions and, in particular, disabilities are a significant burden for the person, his or her family, and public health care systems. To guarantee the sustainability of public health systems and improve the quality of care provided, it is becoming urgent to act to prevent and delay the disabling cascade. Current evidence shows that too large a proportion of community-dwelling older people present risk factors for major health-related events and unmet clinical needs. In this scenario, the "frailty syndrome" is a condition of special interest. Frailty is a status of extreme vulnerability to endogenous and exogenous stressors exposing the individual to a higher risk of negative health-related outcomes. Frailty may represent a transition phase between successful aging and disability, and a condition to target for restoring robustness in the individual at risk. Given its syndromic nature, targeting frailty requires a comprehensive approach. The identification of frailty as a target for implementing preventive interventions against age-related conditions is pivotal. Every effort should be made by health care authorities to maximize efforts in this field, balancing priorities, needs, and resources. Raising awareness about frailty and age-related conditions in the population is important for effective prevention, and should lead to the promotion of lifelong healthy behaviors and lifestyle.

Abstract

The IS475 collaboration conducted Coulomb-excitation experiments with post-accelerated radioactive Rn-220 and Ra-224 beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility. The beam particles (E-beam: 2.83 MeV/u) were Coulomb excited using Ni-60, Cd-14, and Sn-120 scattering targets. De-excitation gamma-rays were detected employing the Miniball array and scattered particles were detected in a silicon detector. Exploiting the Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA for each nucleus several matrix elements could be obtained from the measured gamma-ray yields. The extracted <3 parallel to E3 parallel to 0(+)> matrix element allows for the conclusion that, while Rn-220 represents an octupole vibrational system, Ra-224 has already substantial octupole correlations in its ground state. This finding has i(m)plications for the search of CP-violating Schiff moments in the atomic systems of the adjacent odd-mass nuclei.

Abstract

Octupole correlations are described in a microscopic framework involving angular momentum, parity and particle number projected intrinsic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states. Linear combinations of those symmetry restored states are considered to account for collective positive and negative parity states in the nucleus 144Ba. The well-known Gogny D1S interaction is used in the calculations. A strong octupole collectivity is observed in the negative parity states justifying the assignment of 144Ba as an octupole deformed nucleus. Higher lying excited states are studied and its structure is identified by looking at the collective wave functions obtained in the calculations. An oblate-spherical 0+ shape isomer and a two-phonon octupole multiplet are described in detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent progress on the description of time reversal breaking (odd mass and multi-quasiparticle excitation) states in super-heavy nuclei within a mean field framework and using several flavors of the Gogny interaction is reported. The study includes ground and excited states in selected odd mass isotopes of nobelium and mendelevium as well as high K isomeric states in 254No. These are two and four-quasiparticle excitations that are treated in the same self-consistent HFB plus blocking framework as the odd mass states. Abstract

We investigate the emergence and evolution of shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient lead isotopes within the interacting boson model (IBM) plus configuration mixing with microscopic input based on the Gogny energy density functional (EDF). The microscopic potential-energy surface obtained from the constrained self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method employing the Gogny-D1M EDF is mapped onto the coherent-state expectation value of the configuration mixing IBM Hamiltonian. In this way, the parameters of the IBM Hamiltonian are fixed for each of the three relevant configurations (spherical, prolate, and oblate) associated to the mean-field minima. Subsequent diagonalization of the Hamiltonian provides the excitation energy of the low-lying states and transition strengths among them. The model predictions for the 0(+) level energies and evolving shape coexistence in the considered lead chain are consistent both with experiment and with the indications of the Gogny-EDF energy surfaces.

Abstract

The self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation based on the finite-range and density-dependent Gogny interaction (parametrization D1S) has been used to generate potential energy curves in various chains of Pd, Xe, Ba, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Dy isotopes. The evolution of shapes with the number of nucleons is studied and a search for signatures of E(5) and X(5) critical point symmetries is also conducted. The results are compared with those obtained in the framework of other mean-field approximations to the nuclear many-body problem. The role of triaxiality in nuclei where this degree of freedom could be relevant is considered and discussed.
