Little is known about the physiological and psychobiological responses that occur during and after high intensity functional training (HIFT). We compared physiological and psychobiological responses during and after a HIFT session with a high intensity continuous training (HICT) session. Twenty-one trained and healthy men were submitted to 20-min session of HIFT and HICT on separate days. The heart rate, blood lactate concentration [Lac], levels of state anxiety, rates of perceived exertion (RPE) and perceived discomfort (RPE-D), and affective valence were measured. Exercise intensity of the HICT was adjusted to the mean heart rate obtained in the HIFT session. The highest heart rate in the training sessions was significantly higher in HIFT (mean standard deviation [SD]: [187 9] bpm) than in HICT (mean SD: [178 8] bpm, p < 0.001). The [Lac] was significantly higher immediately after the HIFT (median [interquartile range (IQR)]: 6.8 [4.4] mmol/L) than the HICT (median [IQR]: 3.2 [1.9], p ¼ 0.021) and 10 min after (median [IQR]: HIFT ¼ 6.8 [4.9] mmol/L, HICT ¼ 2.9 [2.4] mmol/L, p ¼ 0.003). The RPE was also significantly higher in the HIFT (median [IQR]: HIFT ¼ 20 [2], HICT ¼ 15 [5], p ¼ 0.009). The physiological and psychobiological responses compared between HIFT and HICT sessions are similar, except for the higher heart rate obtained during the sessions, [Lac] and RPE. Probably, the results found for the higher heart rate obtained during the sessions, [Lac] and RPE may be explained by the higher participation of the anaerobic glycolytic metabolism during the HIFT session. Leopard seals have traditionally been considered Antarctic predators with a Southern Ocean distribution. Historically, sightings north of the Antarctic Polar Front were considered extralimital. However, recent studies suggest a significant presence of leopard seals in subantarctic regions. Here, we assess the spatial occurrence, residency status, and temporal trends of leopard seals in Chile using historical records, stranding reports, standardized monitoring data, photo-identification (photo ID) catalogs, and sightings from four research expeditions. We also characterize glaciers where sightings are concentrated, identifying glaciological and geomorphic attributes that prolong iceberg residency time, which is linked to high leopard seal concentrations. Based on these attributes, we evaluated other potential suitable glacial habitats in Patagonia. We obtained 438 sighting records of leopard seals from 1927 to 2023. Over the last 15 years, we documented a 4-18% annual increase in stranding events reported to national authorities. Most sightings (75%) were concentrated in two hotspots: National Park San Rafael Lagoon, located in Northern Patagonia, and Parry Fjord in Tierra del Fuego. Using photo ID catalogs, we identified 19 resident leopard seals, including 16 multi-year residents observed between 2010-2023 (10 in San Rafael, 6 in Tierra del Fuego) and 3 potential residents (observed multiple months in the same year in Tierra del Fuego). San Rafael monitoring data showed no inter-annual trend, but seasonal trends were observed. We also provide evidence of breeding in Chile, with records of at least 14 pups born and at least two females giving birth in multiple years. Our habitat characterization suggests that calving flux, fjord sinuosity, and fjord width variation are crucial for prolonging iceberg residency in hotspot areas. Based on these attributes, we identified 13 additional fjords in Patagonia as "very likely" suitable for leopard seals. Our study confirms that Patagonia is part of the species' breeding distribution, shifting the paradigm that leopard seals are merely visitors north of the Antarctic Polar Front. Given the limited number of suitable glaciers in Chile and the potential impacts of climate change, our assessment highlights glacial retreat as a major threat for the ecosystem of this pagophilic marine apex predator in South America. Within armadillos, two clades are currently recognized: Chlamyphoridae and Dasypodidae. Major evolutionary processes of Chlamyphoridae are linked to the main environmental and climatic events that occurred in South America in the Cenozoic. More precisely, the Euphractinae reached a high diversity concomitant with the cooling period of the Late Miocene–Pliocene. One of the largest euphractines is Macrochorobates , which includes the species M. scalabrinii and M. chapalmalensis , differentiated by minor details on the osteoderms of the dorsal carapace. This genus had a wide distribution, with records in Late Miocene–Pliocene deposits of different regions of Argentina. Here we describe and compare new specimens of M. scalabrinii , which represent the most complete material known so far. Our comparative analysis strongly suggests that M. chapalmalensis represents a junior synonym of M. scalabrinii. This way, the biochron of M. scalabrinii would range from the Late Miocene to the Late Pliocene. Additionally, anatomical comparisons and cladistic analysis show that Macrochorobates and Macroeuphractus (another Late Neogene large euphractine) share some cranial characters, not observable in other armadillos; therefore, we propose that Macrochorobates scalabrinii could have had intermediate carnivorous diets between more generalist taxa such as Euphractus and the specialized carnivory proposed for Macroeuphractus. Microbial aromatic catabolism offers a promising approach to convert lignin, a vast source of renewable carbon, into useful products. Aryl-O-demethylation is an essential biochemical reaction to ultimately catabolize coniferyl and sinapyl lignin-derived aromatic compounds, and is often a key bottleneck for both native and engineered bioconversion pathways. Here, we report the comprehensive characterization of a promiscuous P450 aryl-O-demethylase, consisting of a cytochrome P450 protein from the family CYP255A (GcoA) and a three-domain reductase (GcoB) that together represent a new two-component P450 class. Though originally described as converting guaiacol to catechol, we show that this system efficiently demethylates both guaiacol and an unexpectedly wide variety of lignin-relevant monomers. Structural, biochemical, and computational studies of this novel two-component system elucidate the mechanism of its broad substrate specificity, presenting it as a new tool for a critical step in biological lignin conversion.

Com o objetivo de descrever os acidentes de trânsito de uma cidade de porte médio e comparar os riscos de lesão e morte de diferentes tipos de veículos e pedestres, foram registrados dados de todos os acidentes de trânsito identificados por meio de boletins de ocorrência e de fichas de atendimento de pronto-socorro durante um período de dois anos. Os óbitos por acidentes de trânsito foram rastreados e verificados junto ao Instituto Médico Legal e o número de veículos registrados no município obtido através do Departamento Estadual de Trânsito do Rio Grande do Sul. Foram calculadas taxas de acidente e morte por habitante e por veículo, e realizados testes de associação entre variáveis. Observou-se um sub-registro importante de acidentes a partir do boletim de ocorrência (até 53%), que variou em função do tipo do acidente e da hora de ocorrência. A maior letalidade ocorreu entre ciclistas e pedestres (cerca de 5%), seguidos pelos motociclistas (3%), sendo pedestres o maior contingente de vítimas fatais. Encontrou-se um risco oito vezes maior de morte, quatro vezes maior de lesão e duas vezes maior de atropelar um pedestre para os motociclistas, comparados com os automobilistas. Concluímos que os pedestres e motociclistas são os grupos prioritários para intervenções preventivas.

This work aims to establish a hierarchy of risks of the stabilizers used in nitrocellulose-based propellants concerning to toxicity, carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Four stabilizers - diphenylamine, ethyl centralite, akardite-II and 2-nitrodiphenylamine - and their products of degradation were investigated. The prediction of the toxicity was based on the analysis of their structures with the software Lazar, using the OpenTox framework. Our results provide a quantitative reference of the risks involved in the manufacturing and disposal of propellants due to the use of such stabilizers.

The genus Hyalella Smith, 1874 is typical from the continental American waters and show high levels of endemicity. In Brazil, the occurrence of 12 species was reported, of which only Hyalella caeca Pereira 1989 is troglobiotic. A new species was found in a cave, Gruta da Toca, located near Itirapina city, state of São Paulo, Brazil. This species represents the second troglobiotic for the genus in Brazil.

Parrotfishes (Perciformes: Scaridae) represent a critical functional group on coral reefs because their intense herbivory activity helps in avoiding coral overgrowth by algae. Although feeding preferentially on algae and detritus, some parrotfish species also consume live corals, leading to detrimental effects that may offset the benefits of removing competitive seaweeds. Parrotfish species differ markedly in terms of jaw morphology, foraging activity and extent of substratum excavation, and are typically divided into three functional groups: browsers, scrapers and excavators. The recognition of species within each functional group helps to understand their relative effects in terms of bioerosion, coral fitness and survival, habitat alteration and ecosystem dynamics. Here we report on live coral predation by the Brazilian endemic parrotfishes Scarus trispinosus and Sparisoma amplum in the largest coral reefs of the South Atlantic (Abrolhos Bank, eastern Brazil) and comment on their classification into functional groups based on direct behavioral observations. Scarus trispinosus and Sp. amplum allocated 0.8% and 8.1% of their bites to live corals respectively. Sparisoma amplum fed at lower rates, took shorter feeding forays and larger bites than Sc. trispinosus. Bite rates and foray size were negatively correlated to body size for Sc. trispinosus, but not for Sp. amplum. Our results indicate that Sp. amplum may be primarily recognized as an excavating species, as well as the most specialized parrotfish coral predator in Brazil, while Sc. trispinosus may be recognized as a scraper or excavator depending on its body size. This functional classification corresponds to the classification used for the putative sister taxa of Sc. trispinosus (Sc. coeruleus) and the sister taxa of Sp. amplum (Sp. viride) in the Caribbean, indicating that these two congeneric species pairs play similar ecological roles in different geographic regions.

In recent years, the increase in the generation of waste (e.g., bones and skin) from the processing of fish-based food related to the increase in fish consumption and the accumulation of synthetic polymers in the environment are causing major environmental concerns. Hydroxyapatite (HA) extracted from the bones and collagen from the skin of fish processing residues can be combined with synthetic polymers to maximize the use of waste material derived from fish while simultaneously reducing the use of synthetic polymers. Hence, in this study, collagen and HA were extracted from the carcasses of Lophiosilurus alexandri, and the obtained materials were reused to prepare low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blends and composites. The integrity of the triple helix structure of collagen was confirmed by FTIR and DSC showing that there was no collagen denaturation during its extraction and sample processing. The results indicated that the material produced by the incorporation of collagen into LDPE compatibilized with polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride exhibits good mechanical and surface properties for use as a support material for ornamental articles, among other applications.

Resumo Entre as áreas que são reconhecidas pela carência de inventários florísticos no estado da Bahia, destaca-se a região sudoeste, mais precisamente as áreas que compreendem o Espinhaço Setentrional. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar o levantamento florístico e taxonômico de Rubiaceae da Serra Geral de Licínio de Almeida (SGLA), Bahia. Foram realizadas dez expedições de campo para coleta entre julho de 2012 e maio de 2015, abrangendo todas as fitofisionomias existentes na área. Os materiais coletados foram processados e depositados nos herbários ALCB e HUEFS. Materiais de referência foram também analisados em visita aos herbários ALCB, CEPEC, HRB, HUEFS, RB, SPF. Foram reconhecidas 43 espécies, distribuídas em 28 gêneros, sendo Declieuxia (5 spp.), Borreria (3 spp.), Cordiera (3 spp.) e Psychotria (3 spp.) os gêneros mais diversos e, seguindo os estudos florísticos prévios na Cadeia do Espinhaço, houve um grande número de gêneros (19) com apenas uma única espécie. Psyllocarpus asparagoides, Psyllocarpus laricoides, Stachyarrhena reflexa são endêmicas da Bahia e Minas Gerais; Declieuxia passerina e Galianthe peruviana são novas ocorrências para a Bahia, e duas espécies (Randia sp. e Staelia sp.) são possivelmente inéditas para a ciência. São apresentados chaves de identificação genérica e específica, descrições, comentários taxonômicos para as espécies, além de fotos e ilustrações.
