Abstract

Second-harmonic generation by Cerenkov radiation from proton-exchanged waveguides has been studied using both planar and stripe waveguide geometries. The conversion efficiency has been investigated as a function of waveguide fabrication conditions. The effect of annealing on the conversion efficiency has also been investigated.

Abstract

In-plane scattering in Ti-indiffused LiNbO3 optical waveguides arises from several possible sources. The importance of the different sources changes as a function of the total diffusion time used in waveguide fabrication. This letter describes detailed observations of different sources and shows that at long diffusion times the in-plane scattering is dominated by an increasing density of misfit dislocations growing in the waveguiding layer. Abstract

Impurity-induced disordering of GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well waveguide structures has been carried out using the neutral impurities boron and fluorine, introduced by ion implantation and followed by thermal annealing. Substantial blue shifts (up to 100 meV) in the absorption edge have been obtained and, for similar conditions, fluorine-induced disordering produces larger shifts than boron-induced disordering. Optical transmission measurements performed in slab and rib waveguides indicate that the additional contribution to the absorption coefficient associated with boron disordering is 15 dB cm-1 and with fluorine disordering is only 6 dB cm-1. Abstract

Dyna-METRIC models repairable aircraft parts and assumes that the failure of any part would cause the aircraft to be Not Mission Capable due to Supply (NMCS). That assumption is relaxed in this paper to allow parts to be classified as essential, those whose failure would cause the aircraft to be NMCS, and nonessential, those whose failure would cause an aircraft to be Partially Mission Capable due to Supply (PMCS). Formulas are developed for computing the expected number of aircraft NMCS, PMCS, or both at any time for each of two maintenance policies. The first policy does not allow good parts to be removed from an aircraft, whereas the second does. Also, the results for two sets of parts are extended to allow the nonessential class to be further divided. (Author)

Abstract

Regular periodic structures with large refractive index contrast are often called photonic crystals and may exhibit photonic bandgap behaviour. Planar waveguide 2D and 1D periodic microstructures exhibiting photonic bandgap behaviour are likely to be useful in realising the devices and connecting structures required for compact forms of integrated optical circuit.
