El propósito de este estudio es caracterizar las tendencias investigativas sobre descolonización educativa en Latinoamérica, durante el periodo 2010-2020. Con relación a la metodología, se partió de una revisión sistemática de la literatura en distintas bases académicas y motores de búsqueda. En total, se analizaron 176 artículos publicados en la última década. Los resultados demuestran que las tendencias de investigación más consolidadas se relacionan con los binomios enseñanza-descolonización, pueblos indígenas e interculturalidad, así como con la discusión epistemológica. Por su parte, la descolonización del arte, la descolonización curricular, la formación docente, el feminismo, y el vínculo entre descolonización y discapacidad representan agendas investigativas emergentes.

Biological-physical variability in the Cantabrian Sea is examined from data collected between 1993 and 2000. High hake recruitment occurs during years of high but not maximum upwelling in autumn and intermediate subsurface salinities in winter. These results define an optimal environmental window for successful hake recruitment. The variability in the subsurface salinities is believed to be related to the strength of the winter Poleward Current, which in turn is considered to influence hake recruitment through its effect on aggregation and dispersion of pre-recruits. Over the past decade, recruitment processes of the two species of Lepidorhombus that overlap in the southern Bay of Biscay seem to respond to similar patterns. This appears to be partially explained by density independent factors. Before summer, egg and larval drift by the currents over the continental shelf play a key role. Metabolites produced by an altered gut microbiota might mediate the effects in the brain. Among metabolites, the fecal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered to be potential biomarkers. In this study, we examined both the VOCs and bacterial taxa in the feces from healthy subjects and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients at early and middle stages. Remarkably, 29 fecal VOCs and 13 bacterial genera were differentiated from the healthy subjects and the AD patients. In general, higher amounts of acids and esters were found in in the feces of the AD patients and terpenes, sulfur compounds and aldehydes in the healthy subjects. At the early stage of AD, the most relevant VOCs with a higher abundance were short-chain fatty acids and their producing bacteria, Faecalibacterium and Lachnoclostridium. Coinciding with the development of dementia in the AD patients, parallel rises of heptanoic acid and Peptococcus were observed. At a more advanced stage of AD, the microbiota and volatiles shifted towards a profile in the feces with increases in hexanoic acid, Ruminococcus and Blautia. The most remarkable VOCs that were associated with the healthy subjects were 4-ethyl-phenol and dodecanol, together with their possible producers Clostridium and Coprococcus. Our results revealed a VOCs and microbiota crosstalk in AD development and their profiles in the feces were specific depending on the stage of AD. Additionally, some of the most significant fecal VOCs identified in our study could be used as potential biomarkers for the initiation and progression of AD.

The occurrence of coastal upwelling along the southern Bay of Biscay in response to easterly winds shows clear seasonal variability, with peak development centred during the spring and summer. The historical series (1993-2000) of autumn temperatures has allowed identification of different patterns of upwelling. One of the main conclusions deals with the non-permanent character of the upwelling fringe along the Galicia-Cantabrian coast. This feature is related to the magnitude, time-span and synoptic occurrence of the winds. The occurrence of westerly winds pushes warm waters onto the coastal regions and leads to a reversal of the current pattern over the continental shelf. This may affect the survival of fish recruits via reduced primary production and its subsequent affect on zooplankton. Background COVID-19 severely impacted older adults and long-term care facility (LTCF) residents. Our primary aim was to describe differences in clinical and epidemiological variables, in-hospital management, and outcomes between LTCF residents and community-dwelling older adults hospitalized with COVID-19. The secondary aim was to identify risk factors for mortality due to COVID-19 in hospitalized LTCF residents. Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis within a retrospective cohort of hospitalized patients ≥75 years with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to 160 Spanish hospitals. Differences between groups and factors associated with mortality among LTCF residents were assessed through comparisons and logistic regression analysis. Results Of 6 189 patients ≥75 years, 1 185 (19.1%) were LTCF residents and 4 548 (73.5%) were community-dwelling. LTCF residents were older (median: 87.4 vs 82.1 years), mostly female (61.6% vs 43.2%), had more severe functional dependence (47.0% vs 7.8%), more comorbidities (Charlson Comorbidity Index: 6 vs 5), had dementia more often (59.1% vs 14.4%), and had shorter duration of symptoms (median: 3 vs 6 days) than community-dwelling patients (all, p < .001). Mortality risk factors in LTCF residents were severe functional dependence (adjusted odds ratios [aOR]: 1.79; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13–2.83; p = .012), dyspnea (1.66; 1.16–2.39; p = .004), SatO2 < 94% (1.73; 1.27–2.37; p = .001), temperature ≥ 37.8°C (1.62; 1.11–2.38; p = .013); qSOFA index ≥ 2 (1.62; 1.11–2.38; p = .013), bilateral infiltrates (1.98; 1.24–2.98; p < .001), and high C-reactive protein (1.005; 1.003–1.007; p < .001). In-hospital mortality was initially higher among LTCF residents (43.3% vs 39.7%), but lower after adjusting for sex, age, functional dependence, and comorbidities (aOR: 0.74, 95%CI: 0.62–0.87; p < .001). Conclusion Basal functional status and COVID-19 severity are risk factors of mortality in LTCF residents. The lower adjusted mortality rate in LTCF residents may be explained by earlier identification, treatment, and hospitalization for COVID-19.
