We investigate theoretically whether it is feasible to detect $\eta$- and $\omega$-nucleus bound states. As well as the closed shell nuclei, $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb, we also investigate $^6$He, $^{11}$B and $^{26}$Mg, which are the final nuclei in the proposed experiment involving the (d,$^3$He) reaction at GSI. Potentials for the $\eta$ and $\omega$ mesons in these nuclei are calculated in local density approximation, embedding the mesons in the nucleus described by solving the mean-field equations of motion in the QMC model. Our results suggest that one should expect to find $\eta$- and $\omega$-nucleus bound states in all these nuclei., Comment: Latex, 14 pages, 3 Postscript figures, text and figures are reduced, version to appear in Phys. The propagation of the scalar ($\sigma$) and vector ($\omega$) mesons in nuclear matter is studied in detail using the Walecka model over a wide range of densities and including the effects of a finite $\sigma$ width through the inclusion of a two-pion loop. We calculate the dispersion relation and spectral functions of the $\sigma$ and (transverse and longitudinal) $\omega$ mesons, including the effect of $\sigma$-$\omega$ mixing in matter. It is shown that the mixing effect is quite important in the propagation of the (longitudinal) $\omega$ and $\sigma$ mesons above normal nuclear matter density. We find that there is a two-peak structure in the spectral function of the $\sigma$ channel, caused by $\sigma$-$\omega$ mixing., Comment: 17 pages including 6 ps files, submitted to Phys. Lett. B. In order to measure the charge form factor of the neutron, $G^n_E(Q^2)$, one needs to use a neutron bound in a nuclear target. We calculate the change in the form factor for a neutron bound in $^3He$, with respect to the free case, using several versions of the quark meson coupling model. It is found that the form factor may be suppressed by as much as 12% at $Q^2 = 0.5{GeV}^2$ with respect to that of the free neutron., Comment: 13 pages including 2 ps figures

The properties of the kaon, $K$, and antikaon, $\kbar$, in nuclear medium are studied in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Employing a constituent quark-antiquark (MIT bag model) picture, their excitation energies in a nuclear medium at zero momentum are calculated within mean field approximation. The scalar, and the vector mesons are assumed to couple directly to the nonstrange quarks and antiquarks in the $K$ and $\kbar$ mesons. It is demonstrated that the $\rho$ meson induces different mean field potentials for each member of the isodoublets, $K$ and $\kbar$, when they are embedded in asymmetric nuclear matter. Furthermore, it is also shown that this $\rho$ meson potential is repulsive for the $K^-$ meson in matter with a neutron excess, and renders $K^-$ condensation less likely to occur., Comment: Latex, 11 pages, 4 Postscript figures, a few typos which can be important for an interpretation (but not reflected in the results) are corrected, as published in (E) Phys. Possible variations of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model are examined in which the bag constant decreases in the nuclear medium. The reduction is supposed to depend on either the mean scalar field or the effective mass of the nucleon. It is shown that the electric and magnetic radii of the bound nucleon are almost linearly correlated with the bag constant. Using the fact that the size of the bound nucleon inside a nucleus is strongly constrained by $y$-scaling data in quasielastic, electron-nucleus scattering, we set a limit for the reduction allowed in the bag constant for these two models. The present study implies that the bag constant can decrease up to 10--17 % at average nuclear density, depending on the details of the model., Comment: 31 pages including 4 ps figures, to appear in Nucl.Phys.A

Using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, we study the density dependence of the quark and gluon condensates in nuclear matter. We show that the change of the quark condensate is mainly driven by the scalar field in the medium and that the reduction of the quark condensate is suppressed at high density, even in the mean-field approximation. The gluon condensate decreases by 4 - 6 % at nuclear saturation density. We also give a simple relationship between the change of the quark condensate and that of a hadron mass in the medium., Comment: Latex 14 pages, 2 postscript figures. The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which has been successfully used to describe the properties of both infinite nuclear matter and finite nuclei, is applied to a systematic study of $\Lambda, \Sigma$ and $\Xi$ hypernuclei. Assumptions made in the present study are, (i) the (self-consistent) exchanged scalar, and vector, mesons couple only to the u and d quarks, and (ii) an SU(6) valence quark model for the bound nucleons and hyperon. The model automatically leads to a very weak spin-orbit interaction for the $\Lambda$ in a hypernucleus. Effects of the Pauli blocking at the quark level, particularly in the open, coupled, $\Sigma N - \Lambda N$ channel (strong conversion), is also taken into account in a phenomenological way., Comment: 27 pages, 14 postscript figures, uses epsfig.sty. In-medium nucleon electromagnetic form factors are calculated in the quark meson coupling model. The form factors are typically found to be suppressed as the density increases. For example, at normal nuclear density and $Q^2 \sim 0.3 { GeV}^2$, the nucleon electric form factors are reduced by approximately 8% while the magnetic form factors are reduced by only 1 - 2%. These variations are consistent with current experimental limits but should be tested by more precise experiments in the near future., Comment: 14 pages, latex, 3 figures

The meson(K and $\pi$) exchange currents for the hypernuclear magnetic moments are calculated using the effective Lagrangian method. The seagull diagram, the mesonic diagram and the $\Sigma^0$-excitation diagram are considered. The $\Lambda$-N exchange magnetic moments for the ${}^5_{\Lambda}He$, ${}^6_{\Lambda}He$ and ${}^6_{\Lambda}Li$ are calculated employing the harmonic oscillator shell model. It is found that the two-body correction is about -9% of the single particle value for ${}^5_{\Lambda}He$. The $\pi$ exchange current, induced only in the $\Sigma^0$-excitation diagram, is found to give dominant contribution for the isovector magnetic moments of hypernuclei with A=6., Comment: 11pp, LaTeX, 7 EPS figures, uses epsf.sty

The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model is applied to a study of the mass of the $\rho$-meson in helium and carbon nuclei. The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which has been successfully used to describe the properties of both finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter, is applied to a study of $\Lambda$ hypernuclei. With the assumption that the (self-consistent) exchanged scalar, and vector, mesons couple only to the u and d quarks, a very weak spin-orbit force in the $\Lambda$-nucleus interaction is achieved automatically. The quark-meson coupling model, based on a mean-field description of non-overlapping nucleon bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of $\sigma$, $\omega$ and $\rho$ mesons, is extended to investigate the change of hadron properties in finite nuclei. Relativistic Hartree equations for spherical nuclei have been derived from a relativistic quark model of the structure of bound nucleons and mesons. Using this unified, self-consistent description of both infinite nuclear matter and finite nuclei, we investigate the properties of some closed-shell nuclei, and study the changes in the hadron masses of the non-strange vector mesons, the hyperons and the nucleon in those nuclei. Using a self-consistent quark model for nuclear matter we investigate variations of the masses of the non-strange vector mesons, the hyperons and the nucleon in dense nuclear matter (up to four times the normal nuclear density). We find that the changes in the hadron masses can be described in terms of the value of the scalar mean-field in matter. The model is then used to calculate the density dependence of the quark condensate in-medium, which turns out to be well approximated by a linear function of the nuclear density. The quark-meson coupling model which we have developed previously is extended to incorporate the $\delta$ meson. It is then used to study the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly and isospin symmetry breaking in nuclear matter. We find that, in combination with the {\it u-d\/} mass difference, the difference between quark scalar densities in protons and neutrons generates an effective neutron-proton mass difference of the right magnitude. Finally we find that isospin symmetry breaking in the quark condensates can be directly related to the $\delta$ meson field., Comment: 13 pages
