Fire can have large effects on ecosystems, with phosphorus being highly important in this regard, especially when considering productivity in burned or adjacent ecosystems after fire. Unfortunately, existing data pose contradictions and methodological challenges to assessing P availability. Here, the impact of fire on topsoil available P was estimated using three different types of organic soil layers (raw humus from spruce, humus from beech, and peat) and two fire regimes (obtaining black carbon and ash). Our findings suggest a strong fire impact on P availability, by enhancing available P during burning to black carbon (~10-fold), and to ash (~2- to 7.5-fold) dependent on calcite content. Fire impact on P availability is on a similar order of magnitude as mineral weathering and annual P cycling/ uptake in/by ecosystems. Furthermore, the proportion of available P in relation to total P depends on the origin of the organic soil layers. When related to the remaining mass after burning, as is commonly done, P availability can be overestimated by up to 1400%. Results from this study provide a realistic magnitude of shifts in P release and P availability by fire events of different intensity for widely abundant ecosystem conditions. Taking the importance of P for ecosystem processes into account, these results are highly relevant, because fires for fuel reduction are a common application, and for temperate and boreal ecosystems even moderate climate change scenarios predict an increasing appearance of fires in these regions. Ongoing global changes, such as climate warming and increasing supply of reactive nitrogen (N), are expected to affect essential ecosystem processes such as the decomposition of plant litter. Determining the influence of environmental heterogeneity on the magnitude of these effects remains an important task, with silicon (Si) availability being a notable component of this heterogeneity, especially for grasses. We conducted an outdoor enclosure experiment to test if increased Si supply to a widespread foundation species (.Phragmites australis) alters the effect of climate warming and excess N supply on litter decomposition by curbing fungal decomposers. Consistent with expectations, Si supply during plant growth reduced fungal biomass in decomposing leaf blades by 50%, an effect that was doubled by excess external N supply. These strong impacts, however, did not directly translate to reduced litter decomposition or associated changes in nutrient dynamics. Instead, plant tissue-specific effects determined the influence of Si, N, and elevated temperature on litter mass loss. Specifically, Si accelerated the decomposition of leaf sheaths, warming enhanced leaf-sheath and leaf-blade decomposition, and N decreased the decomposition of culm litter, in line with expectations based on differences in litter chemistry. Thus, despite highly detrimental effects of Si and N on fungal decomposers, compensation by other members of the microbial community could dampen the realized impact of these global-change factors on the decomposition of plant litter in the future. Background: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rarely diagnosed ulcerative neutrophilic dermatosis with unknown origin that has been poorly characterized in clinical studies so far. Consequently there have been significant discussions about its associated factors and comorbidities. The aim of our multicenter study was to analyze current data from patients in dermatologic wound care centers in Germany in order to describe associated factors and comorbidities in patients with PG. Methods: Retrospective clinical investigation of patients with PG from dermatologic wound care centers in Germany. Results: We received data from 259 patients with PG from 20 different dermatologic wound care centers in Germany. Of these 142 (54.8%) patients were female, 117 (45.2%) were male; with an age range of 21 to 95 years, and a mean of 58 years. In our patient population we found 45.6% with anemia, 44.8% with endocrine diseases, 12.4% with internal malignancies, 9.3% with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and 4.3% with elevated creatinine levels. Moreover 25.5% of all patients had a diabetes mellitus with some aspects of potential association with the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Our study describes one of the world's largest populations with PG. Beside the well-known association with chronic bowel diseases and neoplasms, a potentially relevant new aspect is an association with endocrine diseases, in particular the metabolic syndrome, thyroid dysfunctions and renal disorders. Our findings represent clinically relevant new aspects. • Heat effects form fire potentially plays an important role in global Si cycling. • Heat increased Si availability up to ~700% in different mineral soils. • Heat increased amorphous Si up to 1.9 × 104% in these soils. Altered fire regimes as a response to climate change are significantly affecting terrestrial ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles. In this context, not only natural fires but also anthropogenic fires like rice straw burning have to be considered. While heat effects of fire on some nutrient cycles (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus) have been well-studied, little is known about consequences of heat for the silicon (Si) cycle. There is some information that heat increases the release of Si from soil organic matter. However, nothing is known about the effect of heat on Si availability in mineral soils to the best of our knowledge. We analyzed the effect of heat on Si availability in six different mineral soils. Our data show that heat is increasing Si availability (Mehlich-3 extractable) of all tested soils. The same pattern was found for amorphous Si (alkaline extraction) for most of these soils. Consequently, heated soils might represent a strong and immediate source for plant available Si. Ecosystem characteristics (e.g., vegetation, soil type) that affect uptake-leaching balances determine the further fate of the released Si. There is increased interest in the terrestrial silicon cycle in the last decades as its different compounds and species have large implications for ecosystem performance in terms of soil nutrient and water availability, ecosystem productivity as well as ecological aspects such as plant–microbe and plant-animal feedbacks. The currently existing analytical methods are limited. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis is suggested being a promising tool to differentiate between the different Si species. We report here on the differentiation of varying Si-species/Si-binding (in synthetic material) using FTIR-analyses. Therefore, we collected FTIR-spectra of five different amorphous silica, Ca-silicate, sodium silicate (all particulate), a water-soluble fraction of amorphous silica and soil affected by volcanic activity and compared their spectra with existing data. A decrease of the internal order of the materials analyzed was indicated by peak broadening of the Si–O–Si absorption band. Peak shifts at this absorption band were induced by larger ions incorporated in the Si–O–Si network. Additionally, short-range ordered aluminosilicates (SROAS) have specific IR absorption bands such as the Si–O–Al band. Hence, SROAS and Si phases containing other ions can be distinguished from pure amorphous Si species using FTIR-analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water shortage and drought are a growing problem in Europe. Therefore, effective methods for limiting its effects are necessary. At the same time, the "field to fork" strategy adopted by the European Commission aims to achieve a significant reduction in the use of plant protection products and fertilizers in the European Union. In an experiment conducted in 2018–2020, the effect of the method of foliar fertilization containing silicon and potassium on the yield and technological quality of sugar beet roots was assessed. The fertilizer was used in seven combinations, differing in the number and time of application. The best results were obtained by treating plants during drought stress. The better soil moisture for the plants, the smaller the pure sugar yield increase was observed. Predicted climate warming and prolonged droughts pose a threat to the soil structure as organic carbon losses weaken the stability of soil aggregates. Well-structured soils are important for storage and movement of water, solutes, and air, the development of plant roots, as habitat for soil organisms, and the microbial activity. Structural stability is measured in terms of hydro-mechanical properties. This study compares effects of amorphous silica with those of organic carbon on stability parameters during drying of aggregates from relatively finer- and coarser-textured soils. Silica amendment enhanced the positive effect of organic carbon on structural stability in terms of the tensile strength. Synergistic effects between silica and organic carbon in soil colloids appear to dynamically alter aggregate density and friability (i.e., ability to crumble) during drying. Humans modify ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide, with negative consequences for ecosystem functioning. Promoting plant diversity is increasingly suggested as a mitigation strategy. However, our mechanistic understanding of how plant diversity affects the diversity of heterotrophic consumer communities remains limited. Here, we disentangle the relative importance of key components of plant diversity as drivers of herbivore, predator, and parasitoid species richness in experimental forests and grasslands. We find that plant species richness effects on consumer species richness are consistently positive and mediated by elevated structural and functional diversity of the plant communities. The importance of these diversity components differs across trophic levels and ecosystems, cautioning against ignoring the fundamental ecological complexity of biodiversity effects. Importantly, plant diversity effects on higher trophic-level species richness are in many cases mediated by modifications of consumer abundances. In light of recently reported drastic declines in insect abundances, our study identifies important pathways connecting plant diversity and consumer diversity across ecosystems. Here, Schuldt et al. collate data from two long-term grassland and forest biodiversity experiments to ask how plant diversity facets affect the diversity of higher trophic levels. Phosphorus availability in soils is an important parameter influencing primary production in terrestrial ecosystems. Phosphorus limitation exists in many soils since a high proportion of soil phosphorus is stored in unavailable forms for plants, such as bound to iron minerals or stabilized organic matter. This is in spite of soils having a high amount of total soil phosphorus. The feasibility of silicon to mobilize phosphorus from strong binding sites of iron minerals has been shown for marine sediments but is less well studied in soils. Here we tested the effect of silicon on phosphorus mobilization for 143 Artic soils (representing contrasting soil characteristics), which have not been affected by agriculture or other anthropogenic management practices. In agreement with marine studies, silicon availabilities were significantly positive correlated to phosphorus mobilization in these soils. Laboratory experiments confirmed that silicon addition significantly increases phosphorus mobilization, by mobilizing Fe(II)-P phases from mineral surfaces. Silicon addition increased also soil respiration in phosphorus deficient soils. We conclude that silicon is a key component regulating mobilization of phosphorous in Arctic soils, suggesting that this may also be important for sustainable management of phosphorus availability in soils in general. Soil water holding capacity (WHC) is a key soil property determining water availability to plants. Plants increase the organic carbon content of soils, depending on the amount and quality of litter, and with this affect the WHC. Plants accumulate also high amounts of amorphous silica (ASi) of calcium oxalate (Ca-ox) in their tissues. After plant tissues are deposited in the soil, this results in elevated concentrations of these compounds in soils. ASi content in soils range between 0 and 6%. It was suggested that agricultural practice (yearly export of biomass) leads to a strong decrease of ASi content in soils. We tested the effect of biogenic (plant derived) ASi on soil water holding capacity. We found that biogenic ASi forms silica gels with WHC > 700% and it increases soil WHC to values similar to those of clay minerals. An increase of biogenic ASi pools by 5% enhances soil WHC by >15%. Biogenic ASi (mostly phytoliths) can be preserved in soils for many years (as biogenic ASi) until Si is mobilized to dissolved silica DSi by phytolith dissolution. Increasing DSi content in soils slightly decreases the soil WHC. However, high DSi contents favor neoformation of clay minerals, which have high WHC. WHC of soils with 5% biogenic ASi content is higher than soils with 5% montmorillonite, a mineral of the fine clay fraction, known to be responsible for large parts of WHC. Consequently, the speciation of Si is highly important because it determines the WHC of soils. Additionally, we analyzed the effect of Ca-ox on WHC. Increasing soil Ca-ox content increases WHC, especially under negative water potentials. However, for common values of Ca-ox in soils (<1%) Ca-ox effects on soil WHC are negligible. In summary, we propose that preserving the biogenic ASi content in soils should be a target of agricultural practices that aim at increasing WHC and reducing the negative effects of drought on crops. Rice straw increasingly remains on the fields for nutrient supply to the next generation of crop plants. It can be applied either fresh or after burning to black carbon or ash. A central concern during rice cultivation is accumulation of carcinogenic arsenic and the question arises how much rice straw application contributes to nutrient versus arsenic supply in paddy fields. Laboratory incubation experiments were performed to assess the effect of rice straw, black carbon and ash on element mobilization. Our experiments showed initially higher silicon and phosphorus release from black carbon compared to fresh straw amendments. However, more re-sorption to soil lead to finally slightly lower pore water concentrations for black carbon versus fresh straw amendments. Highest arsenic, iron, manganese and dissolved organic carbon concentrations were observed after fresh rice straw application. Black carbon and ash application lead to only minor increases of arsenic compared to controls without amendments. Overall, for silicon and phosphorus the soil acts as sink while for iron and arsenic it was the main source. In summary, burning of rice straw to black carbon prior to application seems to yield a high increase in desired nutrient and a decrease in undesired arsenic mobilization in paddy soils. Plant monocultures growing for extended periods face severe losses of productivity. This phenomenon, known as 'yield decline', is often caused by the accumulation of above‐ and below‐ground plant antagonists. The effectiveness of plant defences against antagonists might help explain differences in yield decline among species. Using a trait‐based approach, we studied the role of 20 physical and chemical defence traits of leaves and fine roots on yield decline of 4‐ and 18‐year‐old monocultures of 27 grassland species. We hypothesized that yield decline is lower for species with high defences, that root defences are better predictors of yield decline than leaf defences, and that in roots, physical defences better predict yield decline than chemical defences, while the reverse is true for leaves. We additionally hypothesized that the relationship between defences and yield decline increases with time and that species increasing the expression of defence traits after long‐term monoculture growth would suffer less yield decline. We summarized leaf and fine root defence traits using principal component analyses and analysed the relationship between the most informative components along with their temporal changes and monoculture yield decline. The significant predictors of yield decline were traits related to the so‐called collaboration gradient of the root economics space (specific root length and root diameter) as well as their temporal changes and traits related to the leaf physical vs chemical defence tradeoff (leaf dry matter, silicon and cellulose content, toughness and phytochemical diversity). We were unable to unequivocally identify the mechanisms relating the effect of those traits to yield decline as they could mediate plant responses to several stressors such as antagonist accumulation, nutrient depletion or drought. Further studies are needed to differentiate between these alternative mechanisms and to gain a comprehensive understanding of the drivers of yield decline in relation to root and leaf defence traits. In melanoma patients, surgical excision of the first draining lymph node, the sentinel lymph node (SLN), is a routine procedure to evaluate lymphogenic metastases. Metastasis detection by histopathological analysis assesses multiple tissue levels with hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemically stained glass slides. Considering the amount of tissue to analyze, the detection of metastasis can be highly time-consuming for pathologists. The application of artificial intelligence in the clinical routine has constantly increased over the past few years. In this multi-center study, a deep learning method was established on histological tissue sections of sentinel lymph nodes collected from the clinical routine. The algorithm was trained to highlight potential melanoma metastases for further review by pathologists, without relying on supplementary immunohistochemical stainings (e.g. anti-S100, anti-MelanA). The established method was able to detect the existence of metastasis on individual tissue cuts with an area under the curve of 0.9630 and 0.9856 respectively on two test cohorts from different laboratories. The method was able to accurately identify tumour deposits>0.1 mm and, by automatic tumour diameter measurement, classify these into 0.1 mm to −1.0 mm and>1.0 mm groups, thus identifying and classifying metastasis currently relevant for assessing prognosis and stratifying treatment. Our results demonstrate that AI-based SLN melanoma metastasis detection has great potential and could become a routinely applied aid for pathologists. Despite seminal papers that stress the significance of silicon (Si) in plant biology and ecology, most studies focus on manipulations of Si supply and mitigation of stresses. The ecological significance of Si varies with different levels of biological organization, and remains hard to capture. We show that the costs of Si accumulation are greater than is currently acknowledged, and discuss potential links between Si and fitness components (growth, survival, reproduction), environment, and ecosystem functioning. We suggest that Si is more important in trait-based ecology than is currently recognized. Si potentially plays a significant role in many aspects of plant ecology, but knowledge gaps prevent us from understanding its possible contribution to the success of some clades and the expansion of specific biomes. The significance of silicon (Si) in plant ecology remains elusive. Trait-based analyses show that Si accumulates most in leaves of small non-woody species and is linked to key functional traits, suggesting trade-offs and physiological constraints on the evolution of Si accumulation in plants. Plant Si-related functions affect fitness components (growth, survival, reproduction), but a sound understanding of Si–fitness relationships is missing. In grasses, there is evidence for a Si-mediated trade-off between growth and defense. Si accumulation is more expensive than is currently acknowledged, and cost–benefit analyses are pivotal to understand how variation is dependent on environment and on trade-offs with other traits. Si plays a significant role in many aspects of plant ecology, but major gaps prevent us from understanding why this trait has been selected for and has contributed to the success of specific clades. Arctic soils store large amounts of organic carbon and other elements, such as amorphous silicon, silicon, calcium, iron, aluminum, and phosphorous. Global warming is projected to be most pronounced in the Arctic, leading to thawing permafrost which, in turn, changes the soil element availability. To project how biogeochemical cycling in Arctic ecosystems will be affected by climate change, there is a need for data on element availability. Here, we analyzed the amorphous silicon (ASi) content as a solid fraction of the soils as well as Mehlich III extractions for the bioavailability of silicon (Si), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), phosphorus (P), and aluminum (Al) from 574 soil samples from the circumpolar Arctic region. We show large differences in the ASi fraction and in Si, Ca, Fe, Al, and P availability among different lithologies and Arctic regions. We summarize these data in pan-Arctic maps of the ASi fraction and available Si, Ca, Fe, P, and Al concentrations, focusing on the top 100 cm of Arctic soil. Furthermore, we provide element availability values for the organic and mineral layers of the seasonally thawing active layer as well as for the uppermost permafrost layer. Our spatially explicit data on differences in the availability of elements between the different lithological classes and regions now and in the future will improve Arctic Earth system models for estimating current and future carbon and nutrient feedbacks under climate change (10.17617/3.8KGQUN, Schaller and Goeckede, 2022). In recent years the association of conditioned pain modulation (CPM) with trait fear and anxiety has become a hot topic in pain research due to the assumption that such variables may explain the low CPM efficiency in some individuals. However, empirical evidence concerning this association is still equivocal. Our study is the first to investigate the predictive power of fear and anxiety for CPM by using a well-established psycho-physiological measure of trait fear, i.e. startle potentiation, in addition to two self-report measures of pain-related trait anxiety. Forty healthy, pain-free participants (female: N = 20; age: M = 23.62 years) underwent two experimental blocks in counter-balanced order: (1) a startle paradigm with affective picture presentation and (2) a CPM procedure with hot water as conditioning stimulus (CS) and contact heat as test stimulus (TS). At the end of the experimental session, pain catastrophizing (PCS) and pain anxiety (PASS) were assessed. PCS score, PASS score and startle potentiation to threatening pictures were entered as predictors in a linear regression model with CPM magnitude as criterion. We were able to show an inhibitory CPM effect in our sample: pain ratings of the heat stimuli were significantly reduced during hot water immersion. However, CPM was neither predicted by self-report of pain-related anxiety nor by startle potentiation as psycho-physiological measure of trait fear. These results corroborate previous negative findings concerning the association between trait fear/anxiety and CPM efficiency and suggest that shifting the focus from trait to state measures might be promising. Biogeochemical cycling in permafrost‐affected ecosystems remains associated with large uncertainties, which could impact the Earth's greenhouse gas budget and future climate policies. In particular, increased nutrient availability following permafrost thaw could perturb the greenhouse gas exchange in these systems, an effect largely unexplored until now. Here, we enhance the terrestrial ecosystem model QUINCY (QUantifying Interactions between terrestrial Nutrient CYcles and the climate system), which simulates fully coupled carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycles in vegetation and soil, with processes relevant in high latitudes (e.g., soil freezing and snow dynamics). In combination with site‐level and satellite‐based observations, we use the model to investigate impacts of increased nutrient availability from permafrost thawing in comparison to other climate‐induced effects and CO2 fertilization over 1960 to 2018 across the high Arctic. Our simulations show that enhanced availability of nutrients following permafrost thaw account for less than 15% of the total Gross primary productivity increase over the time period, despite simulated N limitation over the high Arctic scale. As an explanation for this weak fertilization effect, observational and model data indicate a mismatch between the timing of peak vegetative growth (week 26–27 of the year, corresponding to the beginning of July) and peak thaw depth (week 32–35, mid‐to‐late August), resulting in incomplete plant use of nutrients near the permafrost table. The resulting increasing N availability approaching the permafrost table enhances N loss pathways, which leads to rising nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in our model. Site‐level emission trends of 2 mg N m−2 year−1 on average over the historical time period could therefore predict an emerging increasing source of N2O emissions following future permafrost thaw in the high Arctic. Background: Onychomycosis numbers among the most common fungal infections in humans affecting finger- or toenails. Histology remains a frequently applied screening technique to diagnose onychomycosis. Screening slides for fungal elements can be time-consuming for pathologists, and sensitivity in cases with low amounts of fungi remains a concern. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have revolutionized image classification in recent years. The goal of our project was to evaluate if a U-NET-based segmentation approach as a subcategory of CNNs can be applied to detect fungal elements on digitized histologic sections of human nail specimens and to compare it with the performance of 11 board-certified dermatopathologists. Methods: In total, 664 corresponding H&E- and PAS-stained histologic whole-slide images (WSIs) of human nail plates from four different laboratories were digitized. Histologic structures were manually annotated. A U-NET image segmentation model was trained for binary segmentation on the dataset generated by annotated slides. Results: The U-NET algorithm detected 90.5% of WSIs with fungi, demonstrating a comparable sensitivity with that of the 11 board-certified dermatopathologists (sensitivity of 89.2%). Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that machine-learning-based algorithms applied to real-world clinical cases can produce comparable sensitivities to human pathologists. Our established U-NET may be used as a supportive diagnostic tool to preselect possible slides with fungal elements. Slides where fungal elements are indicated by our U-NET should be reevaluated by the pathologist to confirm or refute the diagnosis of onychomycosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Bowen's disease (malignant) and seborrheic keratosis (benign) are frequent cutaneous neoplasms. Our study assessed the potential of artificial intelligence to distinguish these entities histologically. A dermatopathologist trained deep learning network diagnosed Bowen's disease and seborrheic keratosis with AUCs of 0.9858 and 0.9764 and sensitivities of 0.9511 and 0.9394, respectively. The algorithm proved robust to slides prepared in three different labs and two different scanner models. Nevertheless, challenges, such as distinguishing irritated seborrheic keratosis from Bowen's disease remained. We believe our findings demonstrate that deep learning algorithms can aid in clinical routine; however, results should be confirmed by qualified histopathologists. Background: Some of the most common cutaneous neoplasms are Bowen's disease and seborrheic keratosis, a malignant and a benign proliferation, respectively. These entities represent a significant fraction of a dermatopathologists' workload, and in some cases, histological differentiation may be challenging. The potential of deep learning networks to distinguish these diseases is assessed. Methods: In total, 1935 whole-slide images from three institutions were scanned on two different slide scanners. A U-Net-based segmentation deep learning algorithm was trained on data from one of the centers to differentiate Bowen's disease, seborrheic keratosis, and normal tissue, learning from annotations performed by dermatopathologists. Optimal thresholds for the class distinction of diagnoses were extracted and assessed on a test set with data from all three institutions. Results: We aimed to diagnose Bowen's diseases with the highest sensitivity. A good performance was observed across all three centers, underlining the model's robustness. In one of the centers, the distinction between Bowen's disease and all other diagnoses was achieved with an AUC of 0.9858 and a sensitivity of 0.9511. Seborrheic keratosis was detected with an AUC of 0.9764 and a sensitivity of 0.9394. Nevertheless, distinguishing irritated seborrheic keratosis from Bowen's disease remained challenging. Conclusions: Bowen's disease and seborrheic keratosis could be correctly identified by the evaluated deep learning model on test sets from three different centers, two of which were not involved in training, and AUC scores > 0.97 were obtained. The method proved robust to changes in the staining solution and scanner model. Peatlands are globally important sinks and sources for greenhouse gasses. Their carbon (C) balances are dependent on input of biomass, its quality and decomposition. Silicon (Si) is known to influence the C quality, especially of graminoids, and it influences decomposition under oxic conditions. Drying – rewetting events (D/W), which may influence C mineralization and change nutrient availability, have been predicted to increase in frequency. This raises the question if effects of Si on decomposition are modified by such D/W events. To elucidate this question, we conducted a study with mesocosms extracted from a fen peatland. We hypothesized, that (I, II) there would be higher gas and solute concentrations after Si addition compared to the control after D/W. Further we expected (III) that higher respiratory fluxes of CO 2 and CH 4 would occur after Si addition and D/W and that (IV) there would be a higher gross primary production (GPP) under Si addition due to more viable biomass that is less prone to drought effects. Finally we hypothesized that (V) the chemical composition of Carex rostrata Stokes leaves grown under Si fertilization after a D/W cycle would be less recalcitrant compared to of C. rostrata leaves from the controls. To test these hypotheses, a control and a Si treatment group of mesocosms were subjected to a controlled D/W cycle. We measured soil gas (DIC and CH 4), and solute concentrations (P, Si, Fe and TOC) and gas fluxes of CO 2 and CH 4. Furthermore, we characterized the graminoid biomass for major element contents and by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for organic matter quality. Higher CH 4 fluxes were observed in the Si fertilized mesocosms. There was no difference between the treatments in the ER CO 2 fluxes, whereas the NEE and GPP fluxes indicated higher CO 2 uptake in the Si treated mesocosms. Solute concentrations showed no differences, neither for dissolved gasses , nor for solutes. C. rostrata leaves had lower shares of lignin, waxes, fats, and phenols in plants from the Si fertilized mesocosms. We concluded, that during D/W, plants from Si fertilized mesocosms accumulated more Si than plants from the control mesocosms. These plants were more viable, produced potentially more exudates and had more readily decomposable litter than controls, due to their lower share in recalcitrant moieties. This may have stimulated CH 4 production and emission of CH 4 from the soil into the atmosphere through abundant aerenchyma roots, bypassing oxic, methanotrophic peat layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the fact that silicon (Si) increases the resistance of plants against diverse abiotic and biotic stresses, Si nowadays is categorized as beneficial substance for plants. However, humans directly influence Si cycling on a global scale. Intensified agriculture and corresponding harvest-related Si exports lead to Si losses in agricultural soils. This anthropogenic desilication might be a big challenge for modern agriculture. However, there is still only little knowledge about Si cycling in agricultural systems of the temperate zone, because most studies focus on rice and sugarcane production in (sub)tropical areas. Furthermore, many studies are performed for a short term only, and thus do not provide the opportunity to analyze slow changes in soil–plant systems (e.g., desilication) over long periods. We analyzed soil and plant samples from an ongoing long-term field experiment (established 1963) in the temperate zone (NE Germany) to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) fertilization rates and crop straw recycling (i.e., straw incorporation) on anthropogenic desilication in the long term. Our results clearly show that crop straw recycling not only prevents anthropogenic desilication (about 43–60% of Si exports can be saved by crop straw recycling in the long term), but also replenishes plant available Si stocks of agricultural soil–plant systems. Furthermore, we found that a reduction of N fertilization rates of about 69% is possible without considerable biomass losses. This economy of the need for N fertilizers potentially can be combined with the benefits of crop straw recycling, i.e., enhancement of carbon sequestration via straw inputs and prevention of anthropogenic desilication of agricultural soil–plant systems. Water chemistry is important for the maintenance of wetland structure and function. Interpreting ecological patterns in a wetland system therefore requires an in-depth understanding of the water chemistry of that system. We investigated the spatial distribution of chemical solutes both in soil pore water and surface water, along island-floodplain-channel hydrological gradients in seasonally and permanently inundated habitats between major regions in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Our results show that major cations (Ca, Na, Mg, and K), dissolved silica (DSi), dissolved boron (B), dissolved organic matter (DOC) and electrical conductivity increased significantly, at p ≤ 0.05, from the inlet of the Delta (the Panhandle) to the distal downstream reaches, suggesting the influence of evapoconcentration. Concentrations of dissolved Fe, Al, Zn, Cu, and Mn significantly decreased, at p ≤ 0.05, from the inflow of the Delta to the distal reaches. Only Na, Mn, Fe, Al, and DOC showed significant differences, at p ≤ 0.05, along the local floodplain-channel hydrological gradients, with higher solute concentrations in the floodplains than the channels. Solute concentrations in soil water exhibited similar distribution patterns to those in surface water, but concentrations were higher in soil water. Based on the results, we hypothesise that floodplain emergent vegetation and the channel-fringing vegetation in the Panhandle (a faultbounded entry trough to the Delta) and the permanently inundated eco-region together influence the cycling of solutes that enter the Delta through uptake. High concentrations of arsenic (As) in groundwater threaten the environment and public health. Geogenically, groundwater As contamination predominantly occurs via its mobilization from underground As-rich sediments. In an aquatic ecosystem, As is typically driven by several underlying processes, such as redox transitions, microbially driven reduction of iron (Fe) oxide minerals, and release of associated As. Notably, dissolved As mobilized from soils and sediments exhibits high affinity for dissolved organic matter (DOM). Thus, high DOM concentrations can increase As mobility. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the complex interactions and biogeochemical cycling of As, DOM, and Fe oxides. This review collates knowledge regarding the fate of As in multicomponent As–DOM–Fe systems, including ternary complexes involving both Fe and DOM. Additionally, the release mechanisms of As from sediments into groundwater in the presence of both Fe and DOM have been discussed. The mechanisms of As mobilization/sorption at the solid–water interface can be affected by negatively charged DOM competing for sorption sites with As on Fe (oxy)(hydr)oxides and may be further modified by other anionic ubiquitous species such as phosphate, silicic acid, or sulfur. This review emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of the impact of DOM, Fe oxides, and related biogeochemical processes on As mobilization to aquifers. The review identifies important knowledge gaps that may aid in developing applicable practices for preventing the spread of As contamination in aquatic resources and traditional soil management practices.
