Billions of dollars are now spent annually in the United States and Europe for spatially delineated environmental services such as agricultural landscape management and river restoration programs, yet little is known about the spatial distribution of the benefits from these policies. This paper develops a framework for recovering information on this question from the spatial pattern of votes cast for referenda on the provision of spatially delineated public goods. We specify a model linking voter support for environmental improvement to the distance at which such improvements are expected to occur. The empirical application is to a river restoration referendum in the Swiss canton of Bern. Our results indicate that the benefits from river restoration have a strong local component, sufficiently strong that voter approval would not occur if only canton-wide benefits were at stake. Surprisingly, support of river restoration is no greater, and in some specifications is actually lower, in locations where rivers are a prominent feature in the environment.

Career self‐management (CSM) has attracted increased scholarly interest, but definitional issues and the lack of an integrative understanding constrain research on the topic. In two studies, we seek to clarify the nature and dimensionality of CSM behaviour, examine the relation of specific dimensions to the general construct and investigate the relation of different CSM behaviours to facets of employability. In Study 1, we used a systematic literature review and thematic analysis to identify seven key CSM behaviours: (a) impression management, (b) building contacts, (c) using contacts, (d) human capital development, (e) goal setting and planning, (f) self‐exploration and (g) mobility‐oriented behaviour. Across two samples in Study 2 (combined N = 1065), we examined the relation of the seven behaviours to the general CSM construct and their relation to facets of employability in a time‐lagged analysis. The results show that CSM behaviours are best modelled as a bifactor structure with a general dimension and seven specific behaviours. Specific CSM behaviours explained unique variance in specific facets of employability. In sum, the studies clarify our understanding of CSM's nature, dimensionality, structure, and nomological net. Abstract Background Reversible protein acetylation occurring on Lys-Ne has emerged as a key regulatory post-translational modification in eukaryotes. It is mediated by two groups of enzymes: lysine acetyltransferases (KATs) and lysine deacetylases (KDACs) that catalyze the addition and removal of acetyl groups from target proteins. Estimates indicate that protein acetylation is second to protein phosphorylation in abundance, with thousands of acetylated sites now identified in different subcellular compartments. Considering the important regulatory role of protein phosphorylation, elucidating the diversity of KATs and KDACs across photosynthetic eukaryotes is essential in furthering our understanding of the impact of reversible protein acetylation on plant cell processes. Results We report a genome-scale analysis of lysine acetyltransferase (KAT)- and lysine deacetylase (KDAC)-families from 53 photosynthetic eukaryotes. KAT and KDAC orthologs were identified in sequenced genomes ranging from glaucophytes and algae to land plants and then analyzed for evolutionary relationships. Based on consensus molecular phylogenetic and subcellular localization data we found new sub-classes of enzymes in established KAT- and KDAC-families. Specifically, we identified a non-photosynthetic origin of the HD-tuin family KDACs, a new monocot-specific Class I HDA-family sub-class, and a phylogenetically distinct Class II algal/heterokont sub-class which maintains an ankyrin domain not conserved in land plant Class II KDACs. Protein structure analysis showed that HDA- and SRT-KDACs exist as bare catalytic subunits with highly conserved median protein length, while all KATs maintained auxiliary domains, with CBP- and TAFII250-KATs displaying protein domain gain and loss over the course of photosynthetic eukaryote evolution in addition to variable protein length. Lastly, promoter element enrichment analyses across species revealed conserved cis-regulatory sequences that support KAT and KDAC involvement in the regulation of plant development, cold/drought stress response, as well as cellular processes such as the circadian clock. Conclusions Our results reveal new evolutionary, structural, and biological insights into the KAT- and KDAC-families of photosynthetic eukaryotes, including evolutionary parallels to protein kinases and protein phosphatases. Further, we provide a comprehensive annotation framework through our extensive phylogenetic analysis, from which future research investigating aspects of protein acetylation in plants can use to position new findings in a broader context.

High quality census data are not always available in developing countries. Instead, mobile phone data are becoming a popular proxy to evaluate the density, activity and social characteristics of a population. They offer additional advantages: they are updated in real-time, include mobility information and record visitors' activity. However, we show with the example of Senegal that the direct correlation between the average phone activity and both the population density and the nighttime lights intensity may be insufficiently high to provide an accurate representation of the situation. There are reasons to expect this, such as the heterogeneity of the market share or the particular granularity of the distribution of cell towers. In contrast, we present a method based on the daily, weekly and yearly phone activity curves and on the network characteristics of the mobile phone data, that allows to estimate more accurately such information without compromising people's privacy. This information can be vital for development and infrastructure planning. In particular, this method could help to reduce significantly the logistic costs of data collection in the particularly budget-constrained context of developing countries.

Background: Psychiatric patients are at risk of cardiovascular diseases, and many psychotropic drugs can prolong QTc interval. Requirements for electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring have been set up in our psychiatric university hospital. The objective of this study was to determine the proportion of adult patients who had an ECG during their hospitalization, the prevalence of ECG abnormalities, the evolution of the QTc after admission, and the risk factors for QTc prolongation. Methods: Retrospective analysis of ECGs and clinical data of all patients with a complete hospitalization in 2015. Assessment of the influence of covariates on QTc using linear mixed-effects models. Results: At least one ECG ( n = 600) was performed during 37.6% of the stays ( n = 1198) and in 45.5% of the patients ( n = 871). Among the patients with an ECG, 17.9% had significant ECG abnormalities, including 7.6% with a prolonged QTc. QTc measured at admission and during hospitalization did not change significantly ( n = 46, 419.4 ± 29.7 ms, 417.2 ± 27.6 ms, p = 0.71). Background The incidence and predictors of atrial fibrillation (AF) progression are currently not well defined, and clinical AF progression partly overlaps with rhythm control interventions (RCIs). Methods and Results We assessed AF type and intercurrent RCIs during yearly follow‐ups in 2869 prospectively followed patients with paroxysmal or persistent AF. Clinical AF progression was defined as progression from paroxysmal to nonparoxysmal or from persistent to permanent AF. An RCI was defined as pulmonary vein isolation, electrical cardioversion, or new treatment with amiodarone. During a median follow‐up of 3 years, the incidence of clinical AF progression was 5.2 per 100 patient‐years, and 10.9 per 100 patient‐years for any RCI. Significant predictors for AF progression were body mass index (hazard ratio [HR], 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01–1.05), heart rate (HR per 5 beats/min increase, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.02–1.08), age (HR per 5‐year increase 1.19; 95% CI, 1.13–1.27), systolic blood pressure (HR per 5 mm Hg increase, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.00–1.05), history of hyperthyroidism (HR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.16–2.52), stroke (HR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.19–1.88), and heart failure (HR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.34–2.13). Regular physical activity (HR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.66–0.98) and previous pulmonary vein isolation (HR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.53–0.90) showed an inverse association. Significant predictive factors for RCIs were physical activity (HR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.20–1.68), AF‐related symptoms (HR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.47–2.30), age (HR per 5‐year increase, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.85–0.92), and paroxysmal AF (HR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.51–0.73). Conclusions Cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities were key predictors of clinical AF progression. A healthy lifestyle may therefore reduce the risk of AF progression.
