Cold three flavor quark matter at large (but not asymptotically large) densities may exist in a crystalline color superconducting phase. These phases are characterized by a gap parameter $\Delta$ that varies periodically in space, forming a crystal structure. A Ginzburg-Landau expansion in $\Delta$ shows that two crystal structures based on cubic symmetry are particularly favorable, and may be the ground state of matter at densities present in neutron star cores. We derive the effective action for the phonon fields that describe space- and time-dependent fluctuations of the crystal structure formed by $\Delta$, and obtain the shear modulus from the coefficients of the spatial derivative terms. Within a Ginzburg-Landau approximation, we find shear moduli which are 20 to 1000 times larger than those of neutron star crusts. This phase of matter is thus more rigid than any known material in the universe, but at the same time the crystalline color superconducting phase is also superfluid. These properties raise the possibility that the presence of this phase within neutron stars may have distinct implications for their phenomenology. We report on a new mechanism for heat conduction in the neutron star crust. We find that collective modes of superfluid neutron matter, called superfluid phonons (sPhs), can influence heat conduction in magnetized neutron stars. They can dominate the heat conduction transverse to magnetic field when the magnetic field $B \gsim 10^{13}$ G. At density $\rho \simeq 10^{12}-10^{14} $ g/cm$^3$ the conductivity due to sPhs is significantly larger than that due to lattice phonons and is comparable to electron conductivity when temperature $\simeq 10^8$ K. This new mode of heat conduction can limit the surface anisotropy in highly magnetized neutron stars. We study the phase diagram of a two component Fermi system with a weak attractive interaction. Our analysis includes the leading order Hartree energy shifts and pairing correlations at finite temperature and chemical potential difference between the two fermion species. We show that in an asymmetric system, the Hartree shift to the single particle energies are important for the phase competition between normal and superfluid phase and can change the phase transition curve qualitatively. At large asymmetry we find that a novel but somewhat fragile superfluid state can be favored due to finite temperature effects. We also investigate the transition between the normal phase and an inhomogeneous superfluid phase to study how gradient instabilities evolve with temperature and asymmetry. Finally, we adopt our analysis to study the density profiles of similar asymmetric Fermi systems that are being observed in cold atom experiments., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

We derive the low energy effective action for the collective modes in systems of fermions interacting via a short-range s-wave attraction, featuring unequal chemical potentials for the two fermionic species (asymmetric systems). As a consequence of the attractive interaction, fermions form a condensate that spontaneously breaks the U(1) symmetry associated with total number conservation. Therefore at sufficiently small temperatures and asymmetries, the system is a superfluid. We reproduce previous results for the stability conditions of the system as a function of the four-fermion coupling and asymmetry. We obtain these results analyzing the coefficients of the low energy effective Lagrangian of the modes describing fluctuations in the magnitude (Higgs mode) and in the phase (Goldstone mode) of the difermion condensate. We find that for certain values of parameters, the mass of the Higgs mode decreases with increasing mismatch between the chemical potentials of the two populations, if we keep the scattering length and the gap parameter constant. Furthermore, we find that the energy cost for creating a position dependent fluctuation of the condensate is constant in the gapped region and increases in the gapless region. These two features may lead to experimentally detectable effects. As an example, we argue that if the superfluid is put in rotation, the square of the radius of the outer core of a vortex should sharply increase on increasing the asymmetry, when we pass through the relevant region in the gapless superfluid phase. We calculate the shear modulus of crystalline color superconducting quark matter, showing that this phase of dense, but not asymptotically dense, three-flavor quark matter responds to shear stress like a very rigid solid. To evaluate the shear modulus, we derive the low energy effective Lagrangian that describes the phonons that originate from the spontaneous breaking of translation invariance by the spatial modulation of the gap parameter $\Delta$. These massless bosons describe space- and time-dependent fluctuations of the crystal structure and are analogous to the phonons in ordinary crystals. The coefficients of the spatial derivative terms of the phonon effective Lagrangian are related to the elastic moduli of the crystal; the coefficients that encode the linear response of the crystal to a shearing stress define the shear modulus. We analyze the two particular crystal structures which are energetically favored over a wide range of densities, in each case evaluating the phonon effective action and the shear modulus up to order $\Delta^2$ in a Ginzburg-Landau expansion, finding shear moduli which are 20 to 1000 times larger than those of neutron star crusts. The crystalline color superconducting phase has long been known to be a superfluid -- by picking a phase its order parameter breaks the quark-number $U(1)_B$ symmetry spontaneously. Our results demonstrate that this superfluid phase of matter is at the same time a rigid solid. We close with a rough estimate of the pinning force on the rotational vortices which would be formed embedded within this rigid superfluid upon rotation. Cold three-flavor quark matter at large (but not asymptotically large) densities may exist as a crystalline color superconductor. We explore this possibility by calculating the gap parameter Delta and free energy Omega(Delta) for possible crystal structures within a Ginzburg-Landau approximation, evaluating Omega(Delta) to order Delta^6. We develop a qualitative understanding of what makes a crystal structure stable, and find two structures with particularly large values of Delta and the condensation energy, within a factor of two of those for the CFL phase known to characterize QCD at asymptotically large densities. The robustness of these phases results in their being favored over wide ranges of density and though it also implies that the Ginzburg-Landau approximation is not quantitatively reliable, previous work suggests that it can be trusted for qualitative comparisons between crystal structures. We analyze and compare candidate crystal structures for the crystalline color superconducting phase that may arise in cold, dense but not asymptotically dense, three-flavor quark matter. We determine the gap parameter Delta and free energy Omega(Delta) for many possible crystal structures within a Ginzburg-Landau approximation, evaluating Omega(Delta) to order Delta^6. In contrast to the two-flavor case, we find a positive Delta^6 term and hence an Omega(Delta) that is bounded from below for all the structures that we analyze. This means that we are able to evaluate Delta and Omega as a function of the splitting between Fermi surfaces for all the structures we consider. We find two structures with particularly robust values of Delta and the condensation energy, within a factor of two of those for the CFL phase which is known to characterize QCD at asymptotically large densities. The robustness of these phases results in their being favored over wide ranges of density. However, it also implies that the Ginzburg-Landau approximation is not quantitatively reliable. We develop qualitative insights into what makes a crystal structure favorable, and use these to winnow the possibilities. The two structures that we find to be most favorable are both built from condensates with face-centered cubic symmetry: in one case, the and condensates are separately face centered cubic; in the other case and combined make up a face centered cube., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

It is an open challenge to analyze the crystalline color superconducting phases that may arise in cold dense, but not asymptotically dense, three-flavor quark matter. At present the only approximation within which it seems possible to compare the free energies of the myriad possible crystal structures is the Ginzburg-Landau approximation. Here, we test this approximation on a particularly simple "crystal" structure in which there are only two condensates $ \sim \Delta \exp(i {\bf q_2}\cdot {\bf r})$ and $ \sim \Delta \exp(i {\bf q_3}\cdot {\bf r})$ whose position-space dependence is that of two plane waves with wave vectors ${\bf q_2}$ and ${\bf q_3}$ at arbitrary angles. For this case, we are able to solve the mean-field gap equation without making a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. We find that the Ginzburg-Landau approximation works in the $\Delta\to 0$ limit as expected, find that it correctly predicts that $\Delta$ decreases with increasing angle between ${\bf q_2}$ and ${\bf q_3}$ meaning that the phase with ${\bf q_2}\parallel {\bf q_3}$ has the lowest free energy, and find that the Ginzburg-Landau approximation is conservative in the sense that it underestimates $\Delta$ at all values of the angle between ${\bf q_2}$ and ${\bf q_3}$., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures.
