This paper studies linear reconstruction of partially observed functional data which are recorded on a discrete grid. We propose a novel estimation approach based on approximate factor models with increasing rank taking into account potential covariate information. Whereas alternative reconstruction procedures commonly involve some preliminary smoothing, our method separates the signal from noise and reconstructs missing fragments at once. We establish uniform convergence rates of our estimator and introduce a new method for constructing simultaneous prediction bands for the missing trajectories. A simulation study examines the performance of the proposed methods in finite samples. Finally, a real data application of temperature curves demonstrates that our theory provides a simple and effective method to recover missing fragments.

We revisit the procedure of deformation of $C^*$-algebras via coactions of locally compact groups and extend the methods to cover deformations for maximal, reduced, and exotic coactions for a given group $G$ and circle-valued Borel $2$-cocycles on $G$. In the special case of reduced (or normal) coactions our deformation method substantially differs from -- but turns out to be equivalent to -- the ones used by previous authors, specially those given by Bhowmick, Neshveyev, and Sangha in [7]. We describe and benchmark a new quantum charge-coupled device (QCCD) trapped-ion quantum computer based on a linear trap with periodic boundary conditions, which resembles a race track. The new system successfully incorporates several technologies crucial to future scalability, including electrode broadcasting, multi-layer RF routing, and magneto-optical trap (MOT) loading, while maintaining, and in some cases exceeding, the gate fidelities of previous QCCD systems. The system is initially operated with 32 qubits, but future upgrades will allow for more. We benchmark the performance of primitive operations, including an average state preparation and measurement error of 1.6(1)$\times 10^{-3}$, an average single-qubit gate infidelity of $2.5(3)\times 10^{-5}$, and an average two-qubit gate infidelity of $1.84(5)\times 10^{-3}$. The system-level performance of the quantum processor is assessed with mirror benchmarking, linear cross-entropy benchmarking, a quantum volume measurement of $\mathrm{QV}=2^{16}$, and the creation of 32-qubit entanglement in a GHZ state. We also tested application benchmarks including Hamiltonian simulation, QAOA, error correction on a repetition code, and dynamics simulations using qubit reuse. Non-Abelian topological order (TO) is a coveted state of matter with remarkable properties, including quasiparticles that can remember the sequence in which they are exchanged. These anyonic excitations are promising building blocks of fault-tolerant quantum computers. However, despite extensive efforts, non-Abelian TO and its excitations have remained elusive, unlike the simpler quasiparticles or defects in Abelian TO. In this work, we present the first unambiguous realization of non-Abelian TO and demonstrate control of its anyons. Using an adaptive circuit on Quantinuum's H2 trapped-ion quantum processor, we create the ground state wavefunction of $D_4$ TO on a kagome lattice of 27 qubits, with fidelity per site exceeding $98.4\%$. By creating and moving anyons along Borromean rings in spacetime, anyon interferometry detects an intrinsically non-Abelian braiding process. Furthermore, tunneling non-Abelions around a torus creates all 22 ground states, as well as an excited state with a single anyon -- a peculiar feature of non-Abelian TO. In the domain of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), collaborative perception has emerged as a promising approach to overcome the limitations of individual perception by enabling multiple agents to exchange information, thus enhancing their situational awareness. Collaborative perception overcomes the limitations of individual sensors, allowing connected agents to perceive environments beyond their line-of-sight and field of view. However, the reliability of collaborative perception heavily depends on the data aggregation strategy and communication bandwidth, which must overcome the challenges posed by limited network resources. To improve the precision of object detection and alleviate limited network resources, we propose an intermediate collaborative perception solution in the form of a graph attention network (GAT). The proposed approach develops an attention-based aggregation strategy to fuse intermediate representations exchanged among multiple connected agents. This approach adaptively highlights important regions in the intermediate feature maps at both the channel and spatial levels, resulting in improved object detection precision. We propose a feature fusion scheme using attention-based architectures and evaluate the results quantitatively in comparison to other state-of-the-art collaborative perception approaches. Our proposed approach is validated using the V2XSim dataset. The results of this work demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach for intermediate collaborative perception in improving object detection average precision while reducing network resource usage.

A novel numerical scheme to solve coupled systems of conservation laws is introduced. The scheme is derived based on a relaxation approach and does not require information on the Lax curves of the coupled systems, which simplifies the computation of suitable coupling data. The coupling condition for the underlying relaxation system plays a crucial role as it determines the behavior of the scheme in the zero relaxation limit. The role of this condition is discussed, a consistency concept with respect to the original problem is introduced, well-posedness is analyzed and explicit, nodal Riemann solvers are provided. Kagome lattice magnets are an interesting class of materials as they can host topological properties in their magnetic and electronic structures. YMn6Sn6 is one such compound in which a series of competing magnetic phases is stabilized by an applied magnetic field, and both an enigmatic topological Hall effect and a Dirac crossing close to the Fermi energy have been realized. This material also shows a magnetization-induced Lifshitz transition and evidence of a unique charge spin coupling in one of the magnetic phases, namely the fan-like phase. Tuning the magnetism, and thus the interplay with the electronic states, opens new avenues for precise control of these novel properties. Here, we demonstrate the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic phases in YMn6Sn4Ge2 through the investigation of structural, magnetic, and transport properties. The high sensitivity to small doping provides great potential for engineering the magnetic phases and associated electronic properties in this family of rare-earth kagome magnets.

This research article analyzes the language used in the official statements released by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) after its scheduled meetings to gain insights into the impact of FOMC official statements on financial markets and economic forecasting. The study reveals that the FOMC is careful to avoid expressing emotion in their sentences and follows a set of templates to cover economic situations. The analysis employs advanced language modeling techniques such as VADER and FinBERT, and a trial test with GPT-4. The results show that FinBERT outperforms other techniques in predicting negative sentiment accurately. However, the study also highlights the challenges and limitations of using current NLP techniques to analyze FOMC texts and suggests the potential for enhancing language models and exploring alternative approaches., Comment: 15pages, 4 figures, 5 tables

Subject movement during the magnetic resonance examination is inevitable and causes not only image artefacts but also deteriorates the homogeneity of the main magnetic field (B0), which is a prerequisite for high quality data. Thus, characterization of changes to B0, e.g. induced by patient movement, is important for MR applications that are prone to B0 inhomogeneities. We propose a deep learning based method to predict such changes within the brain from the change of the head position to facilitate retrospective or even real-time correction. A 3D U-net was trained on in vivo brain 7T MRI data. The input consisted of B0 maps and anatomical images at an initial position, and anatomical images at a different head position (obtained by applying a rigid-body transformation on the initial anatomical image). The output consisted of B0 maps at the new head positions. We further fine-tuned the network weights to each subject by measuring a limited number of head positions of the given subject, and trained the U-net with these data. Our approach was compared to established dynamic B0 field mapping via interleaved navigators, which suffer from limited spatial resolution and the need for undesirable sequence modifications. Qualitative and quantitative comparison showed similar performance between an interleaved navigator-equivalent method and proposed method. We therefore conclude that it is feasible to predict B0 maps from rigid subject movement and, when combined with external tracking hardware, this information could be used to improve the quality of magnetic resonance acquisitions without the use of navigators., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

This paper discusses the results for the second edition of the Monocular Depth Estimation Challenge (MDEC). This edition was open to methods using any form of supervision, including fully-supervised, self-supervised, multi-task or proxy depth. The challenge was based around the SYNS-Patches dataset, which features a wide diversity of environments with high-quality dense ground-truth. This includes complex natural environments, e.g. forests or fields, which are greatly underrepresented in current benchmarks. The challenge received eight unique submissions that outperformed the provided SotA baseline on any of the pointcloud- or image-based metrics. The top supervised submission improved relative F-Score by 27.62%, while the top self-supervised improved it by 16.61%. Supervised submissions generally leveraged large collections of datasets to improve data diversity. Self-supervised submissions instead updated the network architecture and pretrained backbones. These results represent a significant progress in the field, while highlighting avenues for future research, such as reducing interpolation artifacts at depth boundaries, improving self-supervised indoor performance and overall natural image accuracy., Comment: Published at CVPRW2023

This paper investigates the correlation between magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) in glioma patients by comparing neuro-oncological markers obtained from MRSI to T1/T2 maps from MRF. Data from 12 consenting patients with gliomas were analyzed by defining hotspots for T1, T2 and various metabolic ratios, and comparing them using S{\o}rensen-Dice Similarity Coefficients (DSCs) and the distances between their centers of intensity (COIDs). Median DSCs between MRF and the tumor segmentation were 0.73 (T1) and 0.79 (T2). The DSCs between MRSI and MRF were highest for Gln/tNAA (T1: 0.75, T2: 0.80, tumor: 0.78), followed by Gly/tNAA (T1: 0.57, T2: 0.62, tumor: 0.54) and tCho/tNAA (T1: 0.61, T2: 0.58, tumor: 0.45). The median values in the tumor hotspot were T1=1724 ms, T2=86 ms, Gln/tNAA=0.61, Gly/tNAA=0.28, Ins/tNAA=1.15, and tCho/tNAA=0.48, and, in the peritumoral region, were T1=1756 ms, T2=102ms, Gln/tNAA=0.38, Gly/tNAA=0.20, Ins/tNAA=1.06, and tCho/tNAA=0.38, and, in the NAWM, were T1=950 ms, T2=43 ms, Gln/tNAA=0.16, Gly/tNAA=0.07, Ins/tNAA=0.54, and tCho/tNAA=0.20. We present dual-attention neural biasing, an architecture designed to boost Wake Words (WW) recognition and improve inference time latency on speech recognition tasks. This architecture enables a dynamic switch for its runtime compute paths by exploiting WW spotting to select which branch of its attention networks to execute for an input audio frame. With this approach, we effectively improve WW spotting accuracy while saving runtime compute cost as defined by floating point operations (FLOPs). Using an in-house de-identified dataset, we demonstrate that the proposed dual-attention network can reduce the compute cost by $90\%$ for WW audio frames, with only $1\%$ increase in the number of parameters. This architecture improves WW F1 score by $16\%$ relative and improves generic rare word error rate by $3\%$ relative compared to the baselines., Comment: Accepted to Proc. IEEE ICASSP 2023

The NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission performed a kinetic impact on asteroid Dimorphos, the satellite of the binary asteroid (65803) Didymos, at 23:14 UTC on September 26, 2022 as a planetary defense test. DART was the first hypervelocity impact experiment on an asteroid at size and velocity scales relevant to planetary defense, intended to validate kinetic impact as a means of asteroid deflection. Here we report the first determination of the momentum transferred to an asteroid by kinetic impact. Based on the change in the binary orbit period, we find an instantaneous reduction in Dimorphos's along-track orbital velocity component of 2.70 +/- 0.10 mm/s, indicating enhanced momentum transfer due to recoil from ejecta streams produced by the impact. For a Dimorphos bulk density range of 1,500 to 3,300 kg/m$^3$, we find that the expected value of the momentum enhancement factor, $\beta$, ranges between 2.2 and 4.9, depending on the mass of Dimorphos. If Dimorphos and Didymos are assumed to have equal densities of 2,400 kg/m$^3$, $\beta$= 3.61 +0.19/-0.25 (1 $\sigma$). These $\beta$ values indicate that significantly more momentum was transferred to Dimorphos from the escaping impact ejecta than was incident with DART. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is expected to start the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) in early to mid-2025. This multi-band wide-field synoptic survey will transform our view of the solar system, with the discovery and monitoring of over 5 million small bodies.The final survey strategy chosen for LSST has direct implications on the discoverability and characterization of solar system minor planets and passing interstellar objects. Creating an inventory of the solar system is one of the four main LSST science drivers. The LSST observing cadence is a complex optimization problem that must balance the priorities and needs of all the key LSST science areas. To design the best LSST survey strategy, a series of operation simulations using the Rubin Observatory scheduler have been generated to explore the various options for tuning observing parameters and prioritizations. We explore the impact of the various simulated LSST observing strategies on studying the solar system's small body reservoirs. We examine what are the best observing scenarios and review what are the important considerations for maximizing LSST solar system science. In general, most of the LSST cadence simulations produce +/-5% or less variations in our chosen key metrics, but a subset of the simulations significantly hinder science returns with much larger losses in the discovery and light curve metrics., Comment: Accepted to ApJS, 103 pages (including references), 43 figures, 9 Tables. In this work, we devise a model adaptation strategy for a class of model hierarchies consisting of two levels of model complexity. In particular, the fine model consists of a system of hyperbolic balance laws with stiff reaction terms and the coarse model consists of a system of hyperbolic conservation laws. We employ the relative entropy stability framework to obtain an a posteriori modeling error estimator. The efficiency of the model adaptation strategy is demonstrated by conducting simulations for chemically reacting fluid mixtures in one space dimension.

Electrostatic potentials strongly affect molecular energy levels and charge states, providing the fascinating opportunity of molecular gating. Their influence on molecular vibrations remains less explored. Here, we investigate Ethyl-Diaminodicyanoquinone molecules on a monolayer of MoS$_2$ on Au(111) using scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy and spectroscopy. These molecules exhibit a large dipole moment in gas phase, which we find to (partially) persist on the MoS$_2$ monolayer. The self-assembled structures consist of chains, where the dipoles of neighboring molecules are aligned anti-parallel. Thanks to the decoupling efficiency of the molecular states from the metal by the MoS$_2$ interlayer, we resolve vibronic states of the molecules, which vary in intensity depending on the molecular surrounding. We suggest that the vibrations are strongly damped by electrostatic interactions with the environment.

In this paper, we present an experiment that explores the plasma dynamics of a 7 micron diameter carbon wire after being irradiated with a near-relativistic-intensity short pulse laser. Using an X-ray Free Electron Laser pulse to measure the small angle X-ray scattering signal, we observe that the scattering surface is bent and prone to instability over tens of picoseconds. The dynamics of this process are consistent with the presence of a sharp, propagating shock front inside the wire, moving at a speed close to the hole boring velocity.

This paper is one in a series reporting results from small telescope observations of variable young stars. Here, we study the repeating outbursts of three likely Be stars based on long-term optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared photometry for all three objects, along with follow-up spectra for two of the three. The sources are characterised as rare, truly regularly outbursting Be stars. We interpret the photometric data within a framework for modelling light curve morphology, and find that the models correctly predict the burst shapes, including their larger amplitudes and later peaks towards longer wavelengths. We are thus able to infer the start and end times of mass loading into the circumstellar disks of these stars. The disk sizes are typically 3-6 times the areas of the central star. The disk temperatures are ~40%, and the disk luminosities are ~10% of those of the central Be star, respectively. The available spectroscopy is consistent with inside-out evolution of the disk. Higher excitation lines have larger velocity widths in their double-horned shaped emission profiles. We prove that all mod $p^m$ singular forms of level $N$, degree $n+r$, and $p$-rank $r$ with $n\ge r$ are congruent mod $p^m$ to linear combinations of theta series of degree $r$ attached to quadratic forms of some level. We study state-of-the-art approaches for calculating x-ray Thomson scattering spectra from density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations based on a modified Chihara formula that expresses the inelastic contribution in terms of the dielectric function. We compare the electronic dynamic structure factor computed from the Mermin dielectric function using an ab initio electron-ion collision frequency to computations using a linear response time dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT) framework for hydrogen and beryllium and investigate the dispersion of free-free and bound-free contributions to the scattering signal. A separate treatment of these contributions in the Mermin dielectric function shows excellent agreement with LR-TDDFT results for ambient-density beryllium, but breaks down for highly compressed matter where the bound states become pressure ionized. LR-TDDFT is used to reanalyze x-ray Thomson scattering experiments on beryllium demonstrating strong deviations from the plasma conditions inferred with traditional analytic models at small scattering angles., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Physical Review E
