This series for the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, "Dreaming Mum again", has been created in response to the curators’ invitation to present work about my Aboriginal (Bigambul) mother, Pearl King, by way of my photographic layering technique. In my interpretations of the original photos of Mum I have again returned to my photographic practice of working with layers and curved interpenetrating edges. I am drawn to challenging the camera’s entanglement with colonial Imperialism by offering photographic and digital techniques that counter-balance the hard-edged epistemological canon of the lens. The lens as a canonical device interprets and filters worldviews. In my use of camera, mirror, scanner and photo editor, I choose to layer and sometimes distort multiple lenses and perspectives to propose a metaphor for the simultaneous multidimensional nature of consciousness. By weaving photographic moments and places together I am constructing a web of connections, of associations that expand the view, as it were, beyond the foreground, middle-ground, background relationship of a one-lens perspective. In museum catalogues and libraries photographs are more often contextualised within limited temporal terms. In my work veins and threads are like the warp and weft of woven fabrics where patterns of interconnection and interrelationship construct dancing forms and ideations. Mum is in the fabric of Bigambul Country. She is simultaneously mother, free agent, lover, model and majestic power.

Singing Place is a collaborative temporal public art installation undertaken as part of a major contemporary art exhibition of "new and significant artworks from local and national artists" affiliated with the Commonwealth Games Event City Festival 2018 comprising suspended bamboo sculptures, video projection, audio installation and choral performance. This project combines ephemeral natural forms with human voices, visual imagery and environmental sounds to address the harmonious gathering of diverse cultures and creative energies

This bibliography of social and economic studies of the fisheries of the Northeast United States (Maine to North Carolina) includes annotated listings for each entry and an index of key words for cross-referencing. We have attempted to include all studies published since 1970, and a selected group of particularly significant studies done earlier. The major focus has been on commercial fisheries, but recreational fishing studies have also been included when possible. In addition to studies of the Northeast United States fisheries, studies of Canadian fishing subsidies, European and other markets, have been included because of their relevance to the regional industry. All stages of the fishing industry's operation - harvesting, processing, distribution, marketing - are included, along with management and policy oriented material., Prepared for the National Marine Fisheries Service Contract NA-81-FA-C-00018 and for The Pew Memorial Trust, also for the Department of Commerce, NOAA Office of Sea Grant under NA-80AA-D-0077 (E/L-1) and the Institution's Marine Policy and Ocean Management Program.

This description of the small-scale sector of the Southern New England (Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut) fishery includes information on the fishermen (their ages, education, experience, occupational training, family involvement and reasons for fishing) and the physical characteristics of the fleet (the boats and gear). Fishing patterns are analyzed by species, geographical areas and seasons. The economic structure of small-scale fishing is described in terms of investment, net and gross earnings, fuel costs, crew payments systems and marketing arrangements. The New England fishing industry is examined in terms of the capacity of the fishing fleet, of the processing plants, and of the transportation system. Limitations on the capacity of the industry, and its capability and flexibility, are explored in terms of social, economic and technical aspects. The study is based on interviews with fishermen, buyers, processors and distributors, and on data made available by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Although the fisheries is in a state of expansion and both vessels and plants have a greater capacity than is now being used, the major problems that may restrict expansion in both fishing and processing are quality control, species selection and market development., This document is the final report for NOAA Contract #03-6-043-35165, which supported most of the research. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was used to determine the etiology of recurrent hydrops fetalis in this case of Hennekam lymphangiectasia-lymphedema syndrome-1. WES is a useful approach for diagnosing rare single-gene conditions with nonspecific phenotypes and should be considered early in the diagnostic process of investigating fetal abnormalities.

"Mill Binna" is an English translation for "Eye Ear" or more appropriately "See Hear" in Bigambul language. The reference to this language respects the spoken dialect of Leah's Bigambul ancestral heritage and draws attention to a decolonising methodology that offers an alternative knowledge construct from the standpoint of an Indigenous creative practice. In collaboration with artist Duncan King-Smith, who works in the transdisciplinary field of acoustic ecology, Mill Binna creates an aural, visual and spatial experience that deploys and interrogates photographic, sound, 3d motion graphics, video and artefact cultures. Employing experimental and innovative uses of technology, the exhibition presents disembodied beings, entities or characters who emerge to exuberantly play upon a corporeal stage.

Research suggests that variability in the input plays an important role in learning language. The current study examined the role of object variability for word learning by preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI). Seventeen 4- and 5-year-old children with SLI were taught eight new words in three short activities during the first three weeks of a six-week program. Half of the children saw three identical objects (No Variability group) corresponding to each target word during training, and the other half of the children saw three variable objects (High Variability group) corresponding to each target word during training. Children completed identification tests for objects seen during training and new within-category objects that were never seen to test generalization. Tests were administered the day after each training activity and three weeks after the last training session. There were no group differences on trained or generalization items immediately following training sessions. However, children in the High Variability group demonstrated significantly better learning, as measured by performance on generalization items, at retention testing three weeks after experimental training. These findings demonstrate that object variability facilitates retention of word learning by children with SLI.

The acoustic reflex (AR) occurs as the result of a contraction of the stapedius muscle in response to the presentation of a loud sound. When the stapedius muscle contracts, the ossicular chain and the tympanic membrane are stiffened. Generally, increased stiffness of the middle ear system causes low frequency sounds to be more readily reflected off the tympanic membrane, while high frequency sounds are more easily admitted into the middle ear. Wideband power reflectance (WPR) measures energy across a broad frequency range (200-6000Hz) as it is reflected off of the tympanic membrane. Use of WPR allows for measurement of stiffness effects across frequencies, in comparison to conventional immittance instruments, which measure admittance changes at a single probe tone frequency (226Hz). The purpose of this study was to identify whether reflectance measures could be used to differentiate reflectance patterns resulting from activation of the acoustic reflex as a function of contralateral stimulus type (broadband noise, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000Hz). This study hypothesized that innervation distribution patterns of the basilar membrane would result in the AR producing different stiffness changes based on contralateral stimulus type. This study additionally demonstrates the potential of WPR to enhance understanding of the AR effects on the auditory system.
