We present interstellar gas-phase abundances of zinc and chromium in the Milky Way for comparison with the abundances of these elements in damped Ly-alpha systems at redshifts near z approximately 2. We make use of both IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) and GHRS (Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph) archival information in deriving the Milky Way values and find that the average difference in (Zn/H) and (Cr/Zn) between the Milky Way and damped Ly-alpha systems at large N(H1) is about 0.9 dex. The Zn/H values we find for the Milky Way are approximately -0.2 to -0.7 dex below solar and are due in large part to depletion of Zn onto dust grains. The amount of this gas-phase depletion is variable and depends upon the H1 column density and molecular fraction of the gas. Milky Way sight lines having low molecular fractions have values of (Zn/H) within approximately 0.2 dex of the solar value. Combined with larger values of (Cr/Zn) found for the damped Ly-alpha systems, this result confirms that measures of (Zn/H) should accurately reflect the lower gas-phase abundances of Zn found in these systems.

Using a sample of 119 QSOs, containing objects we have selected having previously available high quality ground-based and IUE spectral observations, together with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of 26 QSOs from Bahcall et al. (1993, 1995) and Impey et al. (1995) and new optical observations of 41 objects by Steidel & Sargent (1995), we study the redshift evolution of Lyman limit absorption systems (LLSs; tau greater than 1.0) over the reshift range 0.32 less than or equal to z(sub LLS) less than or equal to 4.11. The HST observations significantly improve the determination of the low redshift (0.4 less than or equal to z(sub LLS) less than or equal to 1.4) distribution. We find the effect which may have been responsible for the apparent strong evolution at a(sub LLS) greater than or equal to 2.5 found by Lanzetta (1991), which led him to consider a broken, not single power law as a better description of the redshift distribution of LLSs. After removing objects which may bias our sample, leaving a total of 169 QSOs, we find the distribution is well described by a single power law, and obtain for the number density as a function of redshift the form N(z) = N(sub 0)(1 + z)(exp gamma) with gamma = 1.50 =/- 0.39 and N(sub 0) = 0.25(sup -0.10)(sub +0.17), consistent with a constant comoving density of absorbers in a Firedmann universe with q(sub 0) = 0 but indicating evolution if q(sub 0) = 1/2.

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based data on the Z(sub abs) = 0.8596 metal-line absorption system along the line of sight to PKS 0454+0356. The system is a moderate-redshift damped Ly-alpha system, with N(H I) = (5.7 +/- 0.3) x 10(exp 20)/sq cm as measured from the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) spectrum. We also present ground-based images which we use to identify the galaxy which most probably gives rise to the damped system; the most likely candidate is relatively underluminous by QSO absorber standards M(sub B) approximately -19.0 for A(sub 0) = 0.5 and H(sub 0) = 50 km/s/Mpc) and lies approximately 8.5/h kpc in projection from the QSO sight line. Ground-based measurements of Zn II, Cr II, and Fe II absorption lines from this system allow us to infer abundances of (Zn/H) = -1.1, (Cr/H) = -1.2, and (Fe/H) = -1.2 indicating overall metallicity similar to damped systems at z is greater than 2, and that the depletion of Cr and Fe onto dust grains may be even less important than in many of the high-redshift systems of comparable metallicity. Limits previously placed on the 21 cm optical depth in the z = 0.8596 system, together with our new N(H I) measurement, suggest a very high spin temperature for the H I, T(sub s) is greater than 580 K.

Our recent statistical investigations of broad UV lines of luminous quasars (QSOs) suggest that the traditional broadline region (BLR) consists of two components-one of width approximately 2000 km/s FWHM with the peak within a few hundred kilometers per second of the systemic redshift, and another very broad component of width greater than or equal to 7000 km/s FWHM and blueshifted by greater than or equal to 1000 km/s. Differences in the relative strengths of these components account for much of the diversity of broad-line profiles, as well as relations among line strength, line width, asymmetry, and peak blueshift. We have suggested that the narrower component arises in a distinct intermediate-line region (ILR) that is an inner extension of the narrow-line region (NLR). We form spectra of the ILR and very broad line region (VBLR) in two complementary ways. First, using a small sample of high-quality spectra, we difference two composite spectra, one with FWHM (sub C IV) approximately 3000 km/s, the other with FWHM (sub C IV) approximately 7000 km/s (essentially a VBLR spectrum)-revealing a narrower line spectrum with FWHM approximately 2000 km/s. Second, we use a principal component analysis of 200 low signal-to-noise ratio spectra from the Large Bright Quasar Survey. The ILR is identified with the first principal component-that component accounting for most of the spectrum-to-spectrum variation. The VBLR spectrum is derived by subtracting this ILR from the mean spectrum. The two methods yield similar results, and the spectra of the ILR and VBLR are very different. Additional support for the existence of two component is the lack of a correlation between the equivalent widths of the ILR and VBLR. We discuss the relationships between the VBLR, the ILR, and the traditional NLR. The ILR line intensity ratios are distinctly different from those of the VBLR, with (relative to C IV lambda 1549) stronger Lyman alpha and weaker N v lambda 1240, lambda 1400 feature, He II lambda 1640, O III lambda 1663, and Al III lambda 1860. Comparison with other active galactic nuclei (AGN) emission-line regions shows that the ILR spectrum tends to be intermediate between that of the VBLR and that of gas more distant from the ionizing continuum, such as the NLR and extended Lyman alpha nebulosity. Comparison of the spectra with results from photoionization models suggests that, compared with the VBLR, the ILR is about 10 times more distant from the ionizing continuum (approximately 1 pc), 100 to 1000 times less dense (10(exp 10)/cu cm), and has a smaller covering factor (less than or approximately 3%, compared with approximately 24% for the VBLR).

We report the possible detection of a cluster of 16 radio-quiet galaxies at z = 3.4, identified in the field around the optically thick absorption system toward Q0000-263 at z(sub abs) = 3.390. Two of them, a Lyman alpha emitter at z = 3.428 and the galaxy responsible for the absorption system, have redshifts spectroscopically confirmed. The other 14 galaxies identified using a multicolor imaging technique designed to detect sources in the redshift interval 3 approximately less than z approximately less than 3.5 which are characterized by a Lyman discontinuity in an otherwise flat spectrum, have broad-band spectral energy distributions identical to the two galaxies with known redshift. They are spatially distributed in two apparent clumps, around the damped absorber and the Lyman alpha galaxy, respectively. A clustering analysis excludes with 98.8% confidence that this association is a realization of a Poissonian distribution and confirms that the observed clumps are real. The implications are that the 16 galaxies are members of a cluster at z approximately equals 3.4, by far the most distant ever detected. An estimate of the mass bounded in stars of this cluster is 3 x 10(exp 12) solar mass (q(sub 0) = 0 and H(sub 0) = 50 km/s/Mpc throughout this Letter), while the total mass (baryonic + dark) is 6 x 10(exp 14) solar mass. We also estimate that at z = 3.4 the correlation length is 2.2 Mpc, which, compared to the present value of 11 Mpc, suggests that the clustering evolution is still close to the linear regime.

Microlensing by compact objects with masses between approximately 0.001 solar masses and approximately 300 solar masses will amplify the continuum emission of a quasar, without significantly changing its line emission. Thus, compact objects with masses associated with stars, subdwarfs, and stellar remnants will reduce the apparent equivalent widths of quasar emission lines. It is possible to detect this population of lenses by searching for an increase in the number of small equivalent width quasars with redshift. This increase was looked for, but not found, in quasar samples taken from the Einstein Medium Sensitivity Survey and the Steidel & Sargent absorption-line studies. Thus, Omega(sub c), the cosmological density of compact objects relative to the critical density, is less than or approximately equal to 0.1 in the mass range 0.01 solar masses-20 solar masses (for Omega less than 0.6). For any value of Omega, Omega(sub c) less than or approximately equal to 0.2 in the larger mass range 0.001 solar masses-60 solar masses, and Omega(sub c) less than 1 for 0.001 solar masses-300 solar masses. Subdwarfs, stellar objects, or their remnants (e.g., MACHOS) cannot close the universe.

We report the discovery of a dwarf galaxy (MB = -17.2 for H0 = 50 km/s per Mpc) at z = 0.072 which is only 4 arcsec (3.7/h(100) kpc) in projection from the line of sight to the bright quasar PKS 0454+0356 (z(em) = 1.345). The dwarf has very blue optical and optical/IR colors and exhibits line emission indicative of ongoing or recent star formation. However, there is no detection of Ca II 3934 A, 3969 A absorption at z(abs) = 0.072 to equivalent width limits (3 sigma) of about 40 mA, which would suggest an H I column density along the line of sight of less than 5 x 10 exp 19/sq cm, if the Ca II/H I ratio is similar to sight lines in the Galaxy. Based on the absence of Ca II absorption and the unusually weak line emission given the very blue color of the dwarf, we speculate that it may be close to exhausting its supply of gas. As its star formation rate declines, the galaxy's blue magnitude should fade substantially, eventually reaching a quiescent state in accord with its K luminosity of about 0.005 L*. Future observations of the sight line to PKS 0454+0356 using HST in search of Mg II resonance lines, or a search for 21 cm absorption against the quasar radio continuum, could place even more stringent limits on the extent of the gas associated with an intrinsically faint, star-forming dwarf.

We present an analysis of the number counts and colors of faint galaxies to about 26.5 mag in the fields of two high Galactic latitude, very-high-redshift QSOs. We concentrate on the general properties of the field galaxies at faint magnitudes. In particular, we readdress the faint galaxy number counts and colors as a function of apparent magnitude and we reexamine the possible contribution of very-high-redshift galaxies to the faint samples. We find that the number counts to R = 26 are well fitted by the relation log N(m) = 0.31R + C. The G-band counts for the same galaxies are consistent with the same slope fainter than G about 23.5, but exhibit a much steeper slope at brighter magnitudes. At R = 25.5, the differential number counts have reached about 1.2 x 10 exp 5/sq deg; the same surface density of galaxies is reached at G = 26.5. We confirm the existence of a gradual 'blueing' trend of the field galaxies toward fainter apparent magnitude; however, the blueing trend appears to extend only as faint as G about 24, fainter than which both the (G-R) and (U sub n-G) colors appear to level off. The mean colors of faint galaxies are considerably redder than flat spectrum. There are essentially no objects to R = 26 which have spectral energy distributions which are bluer than flat spectrum. The potential contribution of very-high-redshift galaxies may have been underestimated in previous analyses; the current data are consistent with the same population of relatively luminous galaxies at z about 3 as exist at z about 0.7.

Results are presented for the first field completed in a new survey involving very deep imaging of the fields of high redshift QSOs which exhibit thick Lyman limit absorption systems that completely remove the QSO from the observed broadband UV bandpass. The broadband colors of galaxies near the QSO sightline are examined with knowledge of the redshifts of heavy element absorption systems already discovered in the QSO spectrum. It is suggested that the colors and magnitudes are more consistent with a moderately underluminous galaxy at z = 0.438. A galaxy is identified which is 2.3 mag fainter and is only 2.8 arcsec from the QSO sightline, which is undetected in the present UV bandpass, and could plausibly be associated with the object responsible for the 3.390-z damped Ly-alpha absorption system in the spectrum of Q0000-263.

Imaging and spectroscopic observations of the field of the QSO 3C 336 (z = 0.927), whose absorption spectrum exhibits at least three Mg II 2796, 2803-A absorption systems with z sub abs less than z sub em, making it the richest low-redshift absorption spectrum observed in a recently completed absorption line survey. The most intrinsically faint Mg II absorbing galaxy yet discovered is tentatively identified. With z equal to 0.472 and B greater than 24, its properties strongly resemble those of the so-called faint blue galaxies found in deep imaging and spectroscopic surveys for field galaxies. The implications of this very complex field for the general properties of galaxies producing heavy element absorption systems in the spectra of QSOs are discussed.

Spectra of 103 low- and intermediate-redshift QSOs with a resolution of 4-6 A were obtained in order to investigate the statistics of the M II 2796, 2803 absorption systems over the redshift range of 0.2-2.2. New emission-line redshifts, based mostly on Mg II 2800 and semiforbidden 1909, were determined for the QSOs. The mean number density of Mg II absorbers per unit redshift range decreased from 0.97 +/-0.10 for a rest equivalent width threshold of 0.3 A to 0.27 +/-0.05 for a threshold of 1.0 A. The results are in agreement with comparable previous work. The observed equivalent width distribution could be fitted with either exponential or power-law analytic distributions, with parameters in line with those found in earlier studies. Statistical tests show that the Mg II absorbers are uniformly distributed in both comoving coordinates and velocity relative to the QSO.

The emission line and continuum properties of new spectra of 92 QSOs are investigated. A detailed deconvolution of the semiforbidden C III 1909 A blend reveals that the secondary feature is almost certainly Al III 1859 A. A study of the Mg II 2800 A emission-line profiles suggests that the broad 'shoulders' often observed are probably intrinsic to the Mg II emission line. It is shown that the QSOs discovered by slitless spectroscopic methods do not differ significantly from those discovered by UV excess surveys. Significant correlations with luminosity are found for W(Mg II), W(semiforbidden C III), I(C III)/I(Mg II), and the continuum ratio fv(1909 A)/fv(2800 A). All of the significant correlations are substantially stronger for a radio-selected subsample compared to a radio-quiet subsample. The C IV and semiforbidden C III emission lines each have a mean blueshift relative to Mg II of 450 km/s while semiforbidden C IV has a mean blueshift relative to semiforbidden C III of 200 km/s.

High S/N spectra of two candidate gravitational lens pairs, over the wavelength range 3150-7000 A at 4-6 A resolution are obtained in order to compare the emission line, continuum, and absorption line properties. The continuum shapes of Q1634 + 267A,B over the observed wavelength range agree remarkably well, and a constant multiplicative factor of 3.28 is found for the ratio A/B over the whole observed wavelength range. In agreement with previous investigations, it is found that the redshifts of the C III 1909 emission line are consistent with zero relative velocity shift and that the line profiles in the two images are identical. The continua of Q2345 + 007A and B match fairly well over the whole observed wavelength range if a constant scaling factor of 2.51 is used. Scaled difference spectra show that the Ly-alpha, NV, CIII, and Fe II emission lines are stronger relative to the continuum in Q2345 + 007B than in A. It is concluded that the pairs of images constituting Q1634 + 267A and B and Q2345 + 007A and B both result from gravitatinal lensing.
