Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of death in the European population, primarily attributed to atherosclerosis and subsequent complications. Although statin drugs effectively prevent atherosclerosis, they fail to reduce plaque size and vascular stenosis. Bare metal stents (BMS) have shown promise in acute coronary disease treatment but are associated with restenosis in the stent. Drug-eluting stents (DES) have improved restenosis rates but present long-term complications. To overcome these limitations, nanomaterial-based modifications of the stent surfaces have been explored. This study focuses on the incorporation of detonation nanodiamonds (NDs) into a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coating on nitinol stents to enhance their performance. The functionalized ND showed a high surface-to-volume ratio and was incorporated into the oxide layer to mimic high-density lipoproteins (HDL) for reverse cholesterol transport (RCT). We provide substantial characterization of DND, including stability in two media (acetone and water), Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy, and nanoparticle tracking analysis. The characterization of the modified ND revealed successful functionalization and adequate suspension stability. Scanning electron microscopy with EDX demonstrated successful incorporation of DND into the ceramic layer, but the formation of a porous surface is possible only in the high-voltage PEO. The biological assessment demonstrated the biocompatibility of the decorated nitinol surface with enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation. This study presents a novel approach to improving the performance of nitinol stents using ND-based surface modifications, providing a promising avenue for cardiovascular disease.

Increasing number of unicorns worldwide is attracting researchers' attention to analyze their phenomena from their growth and financial flexibility interaction perspective. Unicorns as young companies have many external and internal environment development elements affecting their financial performance while going public with an IPO. Thus in the paper, we target to analyze factors revealing unicorns' growth and the relationship between financial flexibility and unicorns' growth before and after the IPO process. The financial data of 20 unicorns from Asia with IPOs from 2009 to 2018 was collected for the research. A literature review was performed to develop the frame and variables of growth and financial flexibility for research design. OLS regression was used for the analysis. Our main findings show the significant negative impact of EBIT on the growth of unicorns before the IPO, which becomes positive after the IPO. The impact of cash or debt on the growth of unicorns is negative after the IPO. The growth of unicorns is significantly influenced by capital expenditures and current liabilities affected by their management policies. Our research fills the existing gap in the literature by analyzing the interaction between the growth and financial flexibility of the high-growth unicorns in the context of the IPO and enriches existing literature by the combination of different theories to support the research, thus further research could focus on a more in-depth analysis of these processes., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2023 The Authors.)

Synthetic bone grafting materials play a significant role in various medical applications involving bone regeneration and repair. Their ability to mimic the properties of natural bone and promote the healing process has contributed to their growing relevance. While calcium-phosphates and their composites with various polymers and biopolymers are widely used in clinical and experimental research, the diverse range of available polymer-based materials poses challenges in selecting the most suitable grafts for successful bone repair. This review aims to address the fundamental issues of bone biology and regeneration while providing a clear perspective on the principles guiding the development of synthetic materials. In this study, we delve into the basic principles underlying the creation of synthetic bone composites and explore the mechanisms of formation for biologically important complexes and structures associated with the various constituent parts of these materials. Additionally, we offer comprehensive information on the application of biologically active substances to enhance the properties and bioactivity of synthetic bone grafting materials. By presenting these insights, our review enables a deeper understanding of the regeneration processes facilitated by the application of synthetic bone composites.

Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica, also known as Bazex syndrome, is a relatively understudied yet clinically important dermatological condition that is inextricably associated with squamous cell carcinoma, predominantly of the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Manifesting as unique psoriasis-like cutaneous lesions, Bazex syndrome functions as an early warning signal for underlying malignancies, underscoring the urgent need for its timely diagnosis and intervention. Notwithstanding its clinical relevance, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning its pathogenesis are not fully understood. To address these gaps, this comprehensive literature review undertook a meticulous search across reputable databases such as EMBASE, MEDLINE/PubMed, and Web of Science. Our analysis ventures into multiple putative pathogenic pathways, including shifts in Th2 immune responses, aberrant secretion of growth factors, and immunological reactions to tumor-specific antigens. We also detail the clinical phenotypes of Bazex syndrome and their chronological linkage with the corresponding malignancies. Finally, the review evaluates the therapeutic effectiveness of various approaches, including but not limited to targeted cancer treatments, PUVA therapy, and topical corticosteroids. Background: Prostatitis is an inflammatory disease of the prostate gland, which affects 2-16% of men worldwide and thought to be a cause for prostate cancer (PCa) development. Carcinoembryogenic antigen-related cell adhesion molecules (CEACAMs) are deregulated in inflammation and in PCa. The role of CEACAMs in prostate inflammation and their possible contribution to the malignant transformation of prostate epithelial cells is still elusive. In this study, we investigated the expression of CEACAMs in an in-vitro prostatitis model and their potential role in malignant transformation of prostate epithelial cells., Methods: Normal prostate epithelial RWPE-1 cells were treated with pro-inflammatory cytokines to achieve an inflammatory state of the cells. The expression of CEACAMs and their related isoforms were analyzed. Additionally, the expression levels of selected CEACAMs were correlated with the expression of malignancy markers and the migratory properties of the cells., Results: This study demonstrates that the pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interferon-gamma (IFNγ), induce synergistically an up-regulation of CEACAM1 expression in RWPE-1 cells, specifically favoring the CEACAM1-L isoform. Biodegradable Magnesium (Mg) implants are promising alternatives to permanent metallic prosthesis. To improve the biocompatibility and with the aim of degradation control, we provided Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) of pure Mg implant in silicate-based solution with NaOH (S1 250 V) and Ca(OH) 2 (S2 300 V). Despite the well-structured surface, S1 250 V implants induced enormous innate immunity reaction with the prevalence of neutrophils (MPO+) and M1-macrophages (CD68+), causing secondary alteration and massive necrosis in the peri-implant area in a week. This reaction was also accompanied by systemic changes in visceral organs affecting animals' survival after seven days of the experiment. In contrast, S2 300 V implantation was associated with focal lymphohistiocytic infiltration and granulation tissue formation, defining a more favorable outcome. This reaction was associated with the prevalence of M2-macrophages (CD163+) and high density of αSMA+ myofibroblasts, implying a resolution of inflammation and effective tissue repair at the site of the implantation. At 30 days, no remnants of S2 300 V implants were found, suggesting complete resorption with minor histological changes in peri-implant tissues. In conclusion, Ca(OH) 2 -contained silicate-based solution allows generating biocompatible coating reducing toxicity and immunogenicity with appropriate degradation properties that make it a promising candidate for medical applications.

Hyperthyroidism is an endocrine disorder characterized by excess thyroid hormone production. Its classic symptoms include weight loss, palpitations, tremors, and anxiety. We present a case of a 33-year-old female who initially presented with anxiety-like symptoms, leading to a misdiagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder. Upon further evaluation, the patient was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, highlighting the importance of evaluating endocrine causes in patients presenting with anxiety-like symptoms. With increasing prevalence and an expected rise in disease burden, cancer is a cause of concern for African healthcare. The cancer burden in Africa is expected to rise to 2.1 million new cases per year and 1.4 million deaths annually by the year 2040. Even though efforts are being made to improve the standard of oncology service delivery in Africa, the current state of cancer care is not yet on par with the rise in the cancer burden. Cutting-edge technologies and innovations are being developed across the globe to augment the battle against cancer; however, many of them are beyond the reach of African countries. Modern oncology innovations targeted to ward Africa would be promising to address the high cancer mortality rates. The innovations should be cost-effective and widely accessible to tackle the rapidly rising mortality rate on the African continent. Background and Aims: Prostate cancer imposes a significant health burden, particularly in South America with its high incidence and mortality rates. This article explores the emergence of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) as a potential solution in the region., Methods: This study relies on a comprehensive review of relevant literature. The analysis highlights the advantages of RARP, identifies impediments to its implementation, and proposes strategies to overcome these barriers., Results: RARP demonstrates notable benefits, including improved functional outcomes, reduced complications, and minimized incisions. However, the integration of RARP in South America is hindered by challenges such as regional disparities, financial limitations, and data gaps. Limited healthcare infrastructure and a scarcity of skilled professionals further compound the issues., Conclusion: Despite its potential, RARP faces obstacles to widespread adoption in South America. Endometrial hyperplastic processes (EHPs) encompass various morphological changes, characterized by an increased ratio of endometrial glands to stroma. These changes manifest as endometrial hyperplasia (EH) and endometrial polyps. The objective of this study was to investigate the expressions of ER and Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) in EH and endometrial polyps, and determine their correlation with histological and anthropometric parameters. Tissue samples were obtained during hysteroresectoscopy and divided into 3 groups: non-atypical EH, glandular EP, and glandular-fibrous EP. We examined the immunoprofile of epithelial and stromal cells using rabbit polyclonal anti-COX2 antibodies and rabbit monoclonal anti-ER antibodies (clone SP1). Our results indicate that there is no association between the expressions of ER and COX2 and the type of EHP. Furthermore, the expression levels of ER and COX2 are not influenced by the patients anthropometric parameters. However, tissues with EHPs exhibited significantly higher COX2 expression compared to intact tissues. We also observed a direct correlation between ER and COX2 expression in the endometrial epithelium. The circadian rhythm (CR) is a fundamental biological process regulated by the Earth's rotation and solar cycles. It plays a critical role in various bodily functions, and its dysregulation can have systemic effects. These effects impact metabolism, redox homeostasis, cell cycle regulation, gut microbiota, cognition, and immune response. Immune mediators, cycle proteins, and hormones exhibit circadian oscillations, supporting optimal immune function and defence against pathogens. Sleep deprivation and disruptions challenge the regulatory mechanisms, making immune responses vulnerable. Altered CR pathways have been implicated in diseases such as diabetes, neurological conditions, and systemic autoimmune diseases (SADs). SADs involve abnormal immune responses to self-antigens, with genetic and environmental factors disrupting self-tolerance and contributing to conditions like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Inflammatory Myositis. Dysregulated CR may lead to increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to the systemic responses observed in SADs. Sleep disturbances significantly impact the quality of life of patients with SADs; however, they are often overlooked. The relationship between sleep and autoimmune conditions, whether causal or consequential to CR dysregulation, remains unclear. Chrono-immunology investigates the role of CR in immunity, offering potential for targeted therapies in autoimmune conditions. Introduction Somatoform disorders (SFDs) are a spectrum of diseases mainly manifesting with physical symptoms of no recognizable etiology. These disorders are believed to be primarily influenced and exacerbated by psychological factors. Given the connection between parental sociodemographics and psychological factors and SFDs, there is a pressing need to investigate this area further, particularly concerning parents and their children affected by somatoform disorders. Aims and objectives The aims and objectives of this study are as follows: i) study the determinants of SFDs, namely, parent handling of child, parent-child relationship, parenting with respect to attending to the needs of children, and intelligence quotient (IQ) of parents, and ii) compare host factors to the factors matched in control subjects. Materials and methods We adopted purposive sampling in our case-control study. The study sample was obtained from the psychiatry department of the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, Kanpur, India, from September 2020 to December 2022, once a week, every Monday. Children manifesting SFD manifestations that are among the chief complaints were included in our study. Results A total of 115 cases were included in our study based on inclusion criteria. The study compared sociodemographic characteristics, intelligence quotient (IQ), parental characteristics, parental handling, parent-child relationships, and parenting practices between a patient group and a control group. The results showed no significant differences in sex, religion, occupation, domicile, and socioeconomic status in both control and patient groups. However, significant differences were found in parental characteristics, such as lower mean age, education, and IQ, in the patient group. This difference between the patient and control groups with respect to the parental handling questionnaire was statistically significant for the domain of "praise," "talk," "feel better," "comes to you," "unduly strict" items, "frequently reprimanded," "tried to control everything," creative activities, protectiveness, education, neglecting, objective punishment, housing, medical care, demanding, symbolic reward, loving, objective reward, food, parent-to-child communication, clothing, support, routine, recreation, social activities, rules, managing problem behavior, guidance for career, and security. Conclusion Parents were deficient in terms of years of education, occupational status, IQ, parental handling, parent-child relationship, and parenting with respect to the children's needs. The issues of safety and its impact on both human health and the environment are on-going challenges in the field of explosives (EXs). Consequently, environmentally-friendly EXs have attracted significant interest. Our previous work, dedicated to on-site mixed (OSM) EXs utilising concentrated hydrogen peroxide (HTP) as an oxidising agent, revealed that the gradual decomposition of HTP may be harnessed as an additional safety measure, e.g., protection from theft. The rate of HTP decomposition is dependent on the OSM components, but this dependence is not straightforward. Relevant information about the decomposition of HTP in such complex mixtures is unavailable in literature. Consequently, in this work, we present a more detailed picture of the factors influencing the dynamics of HTP decomposition in EXformulations. The relevant measurement and validation methodology is laid out and the most relevant factors for determining the rate of HTP decomposition are highlighted. Among these, the choice of auxiliary oxidising agent is of particular relevance and it can be seen that the choice to use ammonium nitrate (AN), made in previous works dealing with HTP-based EXs, is sub-optimal in terms of maintaining the stability of HTP. Another important finding is that glass microspheres are not as inert to HTP as would be expected, as replacing them with polymer microspheres significantly slowed the decomposition of HTP in the investigated OSM samples.

Intracranial aneurysms (IAs) pose complex and potentially life-threatening challenges in Africa, where limited resources, restricted access to specialised healthcare facilities, and disparities in healthcare provision amplify the difficulties of management. Timely diagnosis and treatment are pivotal in preventing complications, including subarachnoid haemorrhage. Treatment options encompass observation, surgical clipping, endovascular coiling, and flow diversion. Positive outcomes observed in IA management in Africa include high survival rates, favourable functional outcomes, successful treatment techniques, and the absence of complications in some cases. However, negative outcomes such as postoperative complications, reduced quality of life, perioperative mortality, and the risk of recurrence persist. Challenges in IA management encompass limited access to diagnostic tools, a scarcity of specialised healthcare professionals, and an unequal distribution of services. Addressing these challenges requires interventions focused on improving access to diagnostic tools, expanding the number of trained professionals, and establishing specialised IA treatment centres. The present study demonstrates a strategy for preparing porous composite fibrous materials with superior biocompatibility and antibacterial performance. The findings reveal that the incorporation of PEG into the spinning solutions significantly influences the fiber diameters, morphology, and porous area fraction. The addition of a hydrophilic homopolymer, PEG, into the Ch/PLA spinning solution enhances the hydrophilicity of the resulting materials. The hybrid fibrous materials, comprising Ch modified with PLA and PEG as a co-solvent, along with post-treatment to improve water stability, exhibit a slower rate of degradation (stable, moderate weight loss over 16 weeks) and reduced hydrophobicity (lower contact angle, reaching 21.95 ± 2.17°), rendering them promising for biomedical applications. The antibacterial activity of the membranes is evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with PEG-containing samples showing a twofold increase in bacterial reduction rate. In vitro cell culture studies demonstrated that PEG-containing materials promote uniform cell attachment, comparable to PEG-free nanofibers. The comprehensive evaluation of these novel materials, which exhibit improved physical, chemical, and biological properties, highlights their potential for biomedical applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) is a powerful technique that yields detailed structural information of solids and thin films that complements electronic structure measurements. Among the strongholds of XPD we can identify dopant sites, track structural phase transitions, and perform holographic reconstruction. High-resolution imaging of k ll -distributions (momentum microscopy) presents a new approach to core-level photoemission. It yields full-field k x -k y XPD patterns with unprecedented acquisition speed and richness in details. Here, we show that beyond the pure diffraction information, XPD patterns exhibit pronounced circular dichroism in the angular distribution (CDAD) with asymmetries up to 80%, alongside with rapid variations on a small k ll -scale (0.1 Å -1 ). Measurements with circularly-polarized hard X-rays (hν = 6 keV) for a number of core levels, including Si, Ge, Mo and W, prove that core-level CDAD is a general phenomenon that is independent of atomic number. The fine structure in CDAD is more pronounced compared to the corresponding intensity patterns. Additionally, they obey the same symmetry rules as found for atomic and molecular species, and valence bands. The CD is antisymmetric with respect to the mirror planes of the crystal, whose signatures are sharp zero lines. Calculations using both the Bloch-wave approach and one-step photoemission reveal the origin of the fine structure that represents the signature of Kikuchi diffraction. KEYNOTE-033 (NCT02864394) was a multicountry, open-label, phase 3 study that compared pembrolizumab vs docetaxel in previously treated, programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1)-positive, advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), with most patients enrolled in mainland China. Eligible patients were randomized (1:1) to pembrolizumab 2 mg/kg or docetaxel 75 mg/m 2 every 3 weeks. Primary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival and were evaluated sequentially using stratified log-rank tests, first in patients with PD-L1 tumor proportion score (TPS) ≥50% and then in patients with PD-L1 TPS ≥1% (significance threshold: P < .025, one-sided). A total of 425 patients were randomized to pembrolizumab (N = 213) or docetaxel (N = 212) between 8 September 2016 and 17 October 2018. In patients with a PD-L1 TPS ≥50% (n = 227), median OS was 12.3 months with pembrolizumab and 10.9 months with docetaxel; the hazard ratio (HR) was 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.61-1.14; P = .1276). Because the significance threshold was not met, sequential testing of OS and PFS was ceased. In patients with a PD-L1 TPS ≥1%, the HR for OS for pembrolizumab vs docetaxel was 0.75 (95% CI: 0.60-0.95). In patients from mainland China (n = 311) with a PD-L1 TPS ≥1%, HR for OS was 0.68 (95% CI: 0.51-0.89). Incidence of grade 3 to 5 treatment-related AEs was 11.3% with pembrolizumab vs 47.5% with docetaxel. In summary, pembrolizumab improved OS vs docetaxel in previously treated, PD-L1-positive NSCLC without unexpected safety signals; although the statistical significance threshold was not reached, the numerical improvement is consistent with that previously observed for pembrolizumab in previously treated, advanced NSCLC., (© 2023 The Authors. Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare primary neuroendocrine malignant neoplasm of the skin, which recurs in about 40 % of cases. The main factors are Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and mutations caused by ultraviolet radiation [Paulson, 2018]. In this study, we report a case of Merkel cell carcinoma with metastasis to the small intestine. In a 52-year-old woman, a subcutaneous formation of a nodule up to 2.0 cm in diameter was detected during the examination. This neoplasm was removed and sent for histological analysis. Dot-like expression of CK pan, CK 20, chromogranin A, and Synaptophysin was observed in tumor cells, and Ki-67 in 40 % of tumor cells. There is no reaction in tumor cells to CD 45, CK 7, TTF 1, and S100. The morphological picture corresponded to Merkel cell carcinoma. A year later, the patient underwent surgery for intestinal obstruction. The Ebola virus, a member of the filoviridae family of viruses, is responsible for causing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) with a case fatality rate as high as 50%. The largest EVD outbreak was recorded in West Africa from March 2013 to June 2016, leading to over 28 000 cases and 11 000 deaths. It affected several countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Until then, EVD was predominantly reported in remote villages in central and west Africa close to tropical rainforests. Human mobility, behavioral and cultural norms, the use of bushmeat, burial customs, preference for traditional remedies and treatments, and resistance to health interventions are just a few of the social factors that considerably aid and amplify the risk of transmission. The scale and persistence of recent ebola outbreaks, as well as the risk of widespread global transmission and its ability for bioterrorism, have led to a rethinking of public health strategies to curb the disease, such as the expedition of Ebola vaccine production. However, as vaccine production lags in the subcontinent, among other challenges, the risk of another ebola outbreak is likely and feared by public health authorities in the region. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a hereditary condition caused by mutations in the lipid pathway. The goal in managing FH is to reduce circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and, therefore, reduce the risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Because FH patients were considered high risk groups due to an increased susceptible for contracting COVID-19 infection, we hypothesized whether the effects of the pandemic hindered access to cardiovascular care. In this review, we conducted a literature search in databases Pubmed/Medline and ScienceDirect. We included a comprehensive analysis of findings from articles in English related and summarized the effects of the pandemic on cardiovascular care through direct and indirect effects. During the COVID-19 pandemic, FH patients presented with worse outcomes and prognosis, especially those that have suffered from early ASCVD. This caused avoidance in seeking care due to fear of transmission. The pandemic severely impacted consultations with lipidologists and cardiologists, causing a decline in lipid profile evaluations. Low socioeconomic communities and ethnic minorities were hit the hardest with job displacements and lacked healthcare coverage respectively, leading to treatment nonadherence. Lock-down restrictions promoted sedentary lifestyles and intake of fatty meals, but it is unclear whether these factors attenuated cardiovascular risk in FH. To prevent early atherogenesis in FH patients, universal screening programs, telemedicine, and lifestyle interventions are important recommendations that could improve outcomes in FH patients. The aim of this article is to compare rocket propellants containing a traditional binder (hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene) and an energetic binder (glycidyl azide polymer), as well as a perchlorate oxidising agent and a "green" one, i.e., ammonium perchlorate and phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate. We have outlined the effects of individual substances on the sensitivity parameters and decomposition temperature of the produced solid propellants. The linear combustion velocity was determined using electrical methods. Heats of combustion for the propellant samples and the thermal decomposition features of the utilised binders were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Activation energy values for the energetic decomposition of the propellants were determined via the Kissinger method, based on DSC measurements at varied heating rates.

Craniomaxillofacial trauma (CMFT) is a type of injury that affects the face, neck, and scalp, and includes facial bone fractures, dentoalveolar trauma, and soft tissue injuries. Work, traffic accidents, sports, and daily activities commonly cause these injuries. However, they are widespread in war-torn countries where armed conflict leads to a high incidence of CMFT. The lack of resources, health care infrastructure, and surgical personnel in these areas result in subpar treatment and poor patient outcomes, contributing to the high mortality and morbidity rates among war victims. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach to CMFT management cannot be overstated, but current obstacles, such as a lack of access to proper medical care and rehabilitation services, impede the development of effective treatments. CMFT treatment is complex and prohibitively expensive for war-torn nations to afford, necessitating international intervention to provide life-saving surgical procedures for those suffering from CMFT in conflict zones. Despite efforts to improve CMFT treatments in war-torn countries, more must be done to improve treatment outcomes. This work aims to investigate the combustion mechanism for a pyrotechnic delay composition (PDC), consisting of zinc powder as a fuel and KMnO 4 as an oxidising agent. For this purpose, the compositions were thermally conditioned at several set temperatures, chosen based on our previous work. Tests were also performed for post-combustion residues obtained via combustion of the PDCs in a manometric bomb. The samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Furthermore, the obtained results were correlated with previous studies by the authors and compared with data available in the literature. On the basis of tests carried out for thermally conditioned samples, a combustion mechanism was determined for Zn/KMnO 4 as a function of temperature. The results show that the combustion process dynamics are independent of equilibrium ratio and limited mainly by diffusion of liquid fuel into the solid oxidising agent. Moreover, it has been revealed that Raman spectroscopy can be effectively used to determine combustion mechanisms for pyrotechnic compositions.

Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are inexpensive and readily produced, but are highly prone to misfires, with the remaining explosive being a significant risk and environmental contaminant. In this work, studies on various additives, such as selected perchlorates and inorganic peroxides, which are intended to lower the susceptibility of ANFO to misfires by increasing its sensitivity to shock, have been conducted. These studies showed the viability of using these additives in ANFO, allowing for conducting shock wave sensitivity tests for bulk charges in the future. We investigated the effects of introducing these additives into ANFO (on its sensitivity), as well as thermal and energetic properties. We observed minor increases in friction and impact sensitivity, as well as a moderate reduction in the decomposition temperature of the additive-supplemented ANFO in comparison to unmodified ANFO.

The need for improved palliative care in developing countries is great. Of 58 million people who die every year, 45 million die in developing countries. An estimated 60% (27 million) of these people in poor nations would benefit from palliative care, and this number is growing as chronic diseases such as cancer rise rapidly. Yet a combination of highly restrictive policies on opioid prescription and a lack of awareness within the medical profession conspire to deprive patients of palliative care. Human rights advocates argue that this neglect is a breach of human rights that is tantamount to torture. Vancomycin is a widely used tricyclic glycopeptide antibiotic for treating various Gram-positive infections, including Clostridium difficile colitis. Although considered generally safe, it has been associated with several side effects. In this case report, we highlight a rare adverse effect in which a patient experienced chronic photophobia following treatment with oral vancomycin. This study proposes an approach to the external evaluation of medical education programs' quality based on a combination of indicators, including international rankings, external stakeholders' input, and independent agencies' assessments. We modify the success equation with a detailed consideration of the skill component and its decomposition into internal and external quality assurance elements along with authority. We carried out a bibliometric analysis regarding the problem of medical education quality assessment in the context of achieving sustainable development goals. We described the calculation model of external quality assessment indicators through the algorithms of independent education quality assurance agencies' activity and rating indicators shown in the modified Mauboussin's equation. The model considers the economic component (the consequence of achievement) of skill, which is expressed in raising funds from external sources to implement educational and scientific activities. The proposed algorithm for assessing the educational program quality can be applied to benchmark educational program components, complete educational programs within the subject area, and the educational institution for different areas. We propose a "financial" model for educational program quality based on the analysis results. The model makes it possible to determine the need for additional focused funding of the educational program based on the individual analysis of the external evaluation criteria of the achievement level. Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are birth abnormalities that may drastically alter the structure and functionality of the heart. For 70% of infants with congenital disorders to survive or maintain a better quality of life, surgery is necessary. Over 500 000 of the 1.5 million CHD cases reported annually, or 1% of all live births, occur in Africa, according to the WHO. A surmounted 90% of these patients are from Africa, and as a consequence, 300 000 infants die annually as a result of poor care or difficulty accessing adequate healthcare. However, the high prevalence of CHDs, precipitated by a plethora of aetiologies worldwide, is particularly pronounced in Africa due to maternal infectious diseases like syphilis and rubella amongst the pregnant populace. In low- and middle-income countries, especially in Africa, where foreign missions and organizations care for the majority of complicated cardiac surgical patients, access to secure and affordable cardiac surgical therapy is a substantial issue. Interventions for CHDs are very expensive in Africa as many of the continent's domiciles possess low expenditures and funding, thereby cannot afford the costs indicated by associated surgical treatments. Lumbar disk herniation (LDH) is a common condition affecting millions worldwide. The management of LDH has evolved over the years, with the development of newer surgical techniques that aim to provide better outcomes with minimal invasiveness. One promising emerging technique is biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS), which utilizes specialized endoscopic equipment to treat LDH through two small incisions. This review aims to assess the effectiveness of BESS as a management option for LDH by analyzing the available literature on surgical outcomes and potential complications associated with the technique. Our review shows that BESS is associated with favorable postoperative results as judged by clinical scoring systems, such as visual analog scale, Oswestry disability index, and MacNab criteria. BESS has several advantages over traditional open surgery, including minimized blood loss, a shorter duration of hospitalization, and an expedited healing process. However, the technique has limitations, such as a steep learning curve and practical challenges for surgeons. Most cases of gastric cancer are caused by chronic Helicobacter pylori infection, but the lack of early onco-diagnostics and a high risk for antibiotic resistance hampers early intervention through eradication of H. pylori infection by antibiotics. We reported on a protective mechanism where H. pylori gastric mucosal attachment can be reduced by natural antibodies that block the binding of its attachment protein BabA. Background: Chiari malformation type 1 (CM1) is a structural abnormality in the skull and cerebellum, causing cerebellar tonsils to shift downward. Decompression of the posterior fossa is a common surgical method to relieve symptoms and prevent neurological deterioration. After posterior fossa decompression (PFD), individuals with CM1 were more likely to have respiratory arrest. Here, we present, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of the potential risk factors and causes of respiratory arrest following PFD., Methods: A review of the literature highlighting the risk factors for postoperative respiratory arrest in CM1 patients was conducted in the databases of PubMed, Medline, and Google Scholar., Results: Patients with syringomyelia and CM1 are at increased risk for respiratory arrest due to a number of factors, including impaired respiratory mechanics, central respiratory center dysfunction from edema or ischemia, intraoperative brain stem ischemia, and delayed gastric emptying from autonomic dysfunction. The objective of study was to investigate the association between the Gln27Glu polymorphism in the β2-АR gene and body mass index in patients with bronchial asthma with regard to the age of onset. Study included 553 patients with bronchial asthma (BA) and 95 apparently healthy individuals with no individual and family history of asthma symptoms. All of them had previously signed an informed consent form for study participation. The patients were divided into 2 clinical groups depending on the age of BA onset. Group I included 282 patients with late-onset asthma (late-onset asthma phenotype), and Group II included 271 patients with early-onset asthma (early-onset asthma phenotype). There was no significant difference in gender, age, severity, or control level between the groups (р>0.05). BA diagnosis and BA severity were determined according to the GINA recommendations-2016 and its later version. Obesity was diagnosed in accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine № 574 dated 05.08.2009 and the WHO recommendations (1999), the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO, 2016). The Gln27Glu polymorphism in the β2-АR gene (rs1042714) was determined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The obtained results were statistically analyzed using SPSS-17 program. No significant difference was established in the distribution of alleles and genotypes for the Gln27Glu polymorphism in the β2-adrenergic receptor gene depending on body mass index (BMI), p=0.1. Obesity relative risk estimation showed a statistically significant correlation related to the dominant (p=0.03) and additive (p=0.04) models of inheritance. The risk of obesity in minor allele carriers (Glu/Glu+Gln/Glu) was 1.75 times higher than that in the major allele homozygotes (р=0.03). No association was observed between the Gln27Glu polymorphism in the β2-AR gene and obesity risk in patients with early-onset bronchial asthma in any model of inheritance. Obesity relative risk estimation in late-onset BA patients showed a statistically significant correlation related to the dominant (p=0.03) and additive (p = 0.001) models of inheritance. The minor allele carriers (Gln/Glu and Glu/Glu genotypes) with late-onset BA had a 1.95 times higher risk of obesity in the dominant model and 1.65 times higher risk of obesity in the additive model vs. the major allele homozygotes. The obtained data indicated that the minor allele carriers of the Gln27Glu polymorphism in the β2-АR gene (both homozygotes and heterozygotes) with late-onset BA had a higher risk of obesity.

Calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAS), the most prevalent valvular disease worldwide, has been demonstrated to frequently occur in conjunction with coronary artery disease (CAD), the third leading cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerosis has been proven to be the main mechanism involved in CAS and CAD. Evidence also exists that obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome (among others), along with specific genes involved in lipid metabolism, are important risk factors for CAS and CAD, leading to common pathological processes of atherosclerosis in both diseases. Therefore, it has been suggested that CAS could also be used as a marker of CAD. An understanding of the commonalities between the two conditions may improve therapeutic strategies for treating both CAD and CAS. This review explores the common pathogenesis and disparities between CAS and CAD, alongside their etiology. Maxillary sinus augmentation is a commonly used procedure for the placement of dental implants. However, the use of natural and synthetic materials in this procedure has resulted in postoperative complications ranging from 12% to 38%. To address this issue, we developed a novel calcium deficient HA/β-TCP bone grafting nanomaterial using a two-step synthesis method with appropriate structural and chemical parameters for sinus lifting applications. We demonstrated that our nanomaterial exhibits high biocompatibility, enhances cell proliferation, and stimulates collagen expression. Furthermore, the degradation of β-TCP in our nanomaterial promotes blood clot formation, which supports cell aggregation and new bone growth. In a clinical trial involving eight cases, we observed the formation of compact bone tissue 8 months after the operation, allowing for the successful installation of dental implants without any early postoperative complications. Our results suggest that our novel bone grafting nanomaterial has the potential to improve the success rate of maxillary sinus augmentation procedures.

The objective was to investigate the peculiarities of menstrual cycle changes in teenagers exposed to a devastating war for an extended period., Methods: A cross-sectional study of 120 Ukrainian girls aged 9-18 asked to complete a survey about their menstrual cycle status 3-6 months after the war began. Other examination methods used included anthropometry, laboratory, and instrumental studies., Results: The frequency of menstrual cycle disorders in the study group was 65.8% ( n =79). The following menstrual cycle disorders were most frequently reported; dysmenorrhea 45.6% ( n =36), excessive menstruation during puberty 27.8% ( n =22), and secondary amenorrhea 26.6% ( n =21). The 52.5% ( n =63) of those examined had pathological menarche. The 81.7% ( n =63) of respondents reported a change in eating habits in the previous few months. The 61.9% ( n =39) of these children had dyshormonal disorders or met the criteria for metabolic syndrome., Conclusion: Adolescent females under stress warrant a quick assessment of their psychoemotional and metabolic conditions. The protection from future menstruation and reproductive illnesses depends on this tactic. The most common malignant tumors of the uterus are endometrioid adenocarcinomas (EA). Their prognosis depends on the qualitative characteristics of the neoplastic cells and their stroma. The neovascularization of EA tissues and level of microvascular density (MVD) influence tumor progression. Our study aims to establish the relationship between MVD in EA tissue and the histological and immunohistochemical features of tumors., Materials and Methods: The authors studied 30 cases of endometrial ЕА and compared their histological and immunohistochemical characteristics with the MVD of tumor tissues., Results: Our study indicated that MVD in EA tissue depends on the grade of the tumors and their FIGO stage. Increased MVD was correlated with a depression of E-cadherin and PR expression and enhanced expression of VEGF and Ki-67. MVD enhancement during VEGF overexpression is a manifestation of the functional activity of these proteins. The increase in MVD was accompanied by more frequent metastasis of the EA to the lymph nodes., Conclusion: EA progression is accompanied by qualitative and quantitative variations of parenchymal and stromal patterns of tumors. Dedifferentiation of EA leads to overexpression of VEGF, which becomes diffuse in tumors cells, resulting in an increase of adenocarcinomas' MVD and their metastatic potential. The purpose of the study is to analyze the presence of functional interrelationships between the level of funding of the healthcare sector and the country's ability to withstand any pandemic, using the example of the COVID-19 pandemic. Official indicators presented by the WHO, analytical reports by Numbeo (the world's largest cost-of-living database), and the Global Health Security Index were used for the study. Using these indicators, the authors analyzed the following: the level of the spread of coronavirus infections in the world's countries, the share of public expenditures on the development of the medical sphere in the GDP of the countries, and the development of the healthcare sector in 12 developed countries and Ukraine. These countries were grouped into three groups, based on the model of the organization of the healthcare sector (Beveridge model, Bismark model, Market (private) model). The Farrar-Glauber method was used to check for multicollinearity in the input dataset, and thirteen relevant indicators were selected. These indicators took part in the formation of the generalized characteristics of the country's medical sphere and the ability to resist the pandemic. The state of readiness of countries to resist the spread of coronavirus infections was assessed using the country's index of vulnerability to COVID-19 and the integral index of the development of medicine. Additive convolution was used in combination with sigma-limited parameterization to form an integral index of the country's vulnerability to COVID-19 and to determine the weights of each indicator. The convolution of indicators according to the Kolmogorov-Gabor polynomial was used to construct an integral index of the development of medicine. Thus, while analyzing the ability of countries to resist the pandemic in terms of models of organization of the healthcare sector, it should be noted that none of the models demonstrated absolute effectiveness in the fight against the mass spread of COVID-19. The calculations made it possible to determine the nature of the relationship between the integral indices of the development of medicine and the vulnerability of countries to COVID-19, as well as a country's potential ability to resist any pandemic and prevent the mass spread of infectious diseases.

Thermal stability is an important feature of the materials used as components and parts of sensors and other devices of nanoelectronics. Here we report the results of the computational study of the thermal stability of the triple layered Au@Pt@Au core-shell nanoparticles, which are promising materials for H 2 O 2 bi-directional sensing. A distinct feature of the considered sample is the raspberry-like shape, due to the presence of Au nanoprotuberances on its surface. The thermal stability and melting of the samples were studied within classical molecular dynamics simulations. Interatomic forces were computed within the embedded atom method. To investigate the thermal properties of Au@Pt@Au nanoparticles, structural parameters such as Lindemann indexes, radial distribution functions, linear distributions of concentration, and atomistic configurations were calculated. As the performed simulations showed, the raspberry-like structure of the nanoparticle was preserved up to approximately 600 K, while the general core-shell structure was maintained up to approximately 900 K. At higher temperatures, the destruction of the initial fcc crystal structure and core-shell composition was observed for both considered samples. As Au@Pt@Au nanoparticles demonstrated high sensing performance due to their unique structure, the obtained results may be useful for the further design and fabrication of the nanoelectronic devices that are required to work within a certain range of temperatures.

In March 2020, WHO declared SARS-CoV-2 a global pandemic and lockdowns were enforced in most of the United States. Self-protective measures and travel restrictions were implemented, and schools/universities initiated online learning. Consequently, the global incidence and hospitalization rates of seasonal respiratory infections decreased significantly up to early 2021. Despite the decrease in hospitalization rates due to respiratory illnesses other than Covid-19, hospitals and healthcare providers faced huge stressors regarding workload dueto the pandemic. Furthermore, higher vaccination rates across the United States decreased non pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) implementation increasing the risk of major seasonal viral outbreaks. The appearance of biological molecules, so-called biomarkers in body fluids at abnormal concentrations, is considered a good tool for detecting disease. Biomarkers are usually looked for in the most common body fluids, such as blood, nasopharyngeal fluids, urine, tears, sweat, etc. Even with significant advances in diagnostic technology, many patients with suspected infections receive empiric antimicrobial therapy rather than appropriate treatment, which is driven by rapid identification of the infectious agent, leading to increased antimicrobial resistance. To positively impact healthcare, new tests are needed that are pathogen-specific, easy to use, and produce results quickly. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based biosensors can achieve these general goals and have enormous potential for disease detection. This article aimed to overview recent articles dedicated to electrochemical sensors modified with MIP to detect protein-based biomarkers of certain infectious diseases in human beings, particularly the biomarkers of infectious diseases, such as HIV-1, COVID-19, Dengue virus, and others. Some biomarkers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) found in blood tests, are not specific for a particular disease but are used to identify any inflammation process in the body and are also under consideration in this review. Other biomarkers are specific to a particular disease, e.g., SARS-CoV-2-S spike glycoprotein. This article analyzes the development of electrochemical sensors using molecular imprinting technology and the used materials' influence. The research methods, the application of different electrodes, the influence of the polymers, and the established detection limits are reviewed and compared.
