Heavy metal pollution is posing significant threats to the environment and human health. Engineered biochar, derived from various biomass sources through thermochemical processes, has emerged as a promising solution for metal pollutant remediation and metal recovery. This review explores the latest advancements in the preparation, characterization, and application of engineered biochar for metal adsorption, recycling, and utilization. It begins by discussing the significance of metal adsorption and providing an overview of biochar properties. The review examines the preparation and characterization techniques, emphasizing feedstock selection, thermochemical conversion methods, and surface modifications. Mechanisms of metal adsorption, such as physical and chemical adsorption, ion exchange, and surface complexation, are critically discussed. Moreover, factors influencing metal adsorption capacity, including biochar properties, metal characteristics, and environmental conditions, are critically analyzed. The efficacy of engineered biochar in adsorbing specific metals, including heavy metals, transition metals, and rare earth elements, is reviewed with recent studies and key findings. Furthermore, the recycling and regeneration of metal-loaded biochar are discussed, focusing on recycling and repurposed application techniques alongside challenges and economic considerations. Finally, future perspectives are provided for the enlightening of future research. This review is unique in addressing the potential of metal-adsorbed biochar as a novel precursor to produce catalytical and electrochemical materials.

Conclusion: miRNA-221 may be used as a potential plasma biomarker for early prediction of fibrosis progression in CLD patients.

PurposeTo evaluate the feasibility of using the Proximity Extension Assay (PEA) platform to detect biomarkers in vitreous and to compare the findings with results obtained with an electrochemiluminescent (ECL) sandwich immunoassay.MethodsVitreous samples from patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and non-diabetic controls were tested using two different proteomics platforms. Forty-one assays were completed with the ECL platform and 459 with the PEA platform. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (rs ) was used to determine the direction and strength of the relationship between protein levels detected by both platforms.ResultsThree hundred sixty-six PEA assays detected the tested protein in at least 25% of samples, and the difference in protein abundance between PDR and controls was statistically significant for 262 assays. Seventeen ECL assays yielded a detection rate ≥ 25%, and the difference in protein concentration between PDR and controls was statistically significant for 13 proteins. There was a subset of proteins that were detected by both platforms, and for those the Spearman's correlation coefficient was higher than 0.8.ConclusionsPEA is suitable for the analysis of vitreous samples, showing a strong correlation with the ECL platform. The detection rate of PEA panels was higher than the panels tested with ECL. The levels of several proinflammatory and angiogenic cytokines were significantly higher in PDR vitreous compared to controls.Translational relevanceThis study provides new information on the yields of small-volume assays that can detect proteins of interest in ocular specimens, and it identifies patterns of cytokine dysregulation in PDR.

Background and objective: Childhood obesity plays major role in the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Serum adiponectin has been found to be associated with several cardiometabolic risk factors. The study investigated the serum adiponectin levels and its relationship with obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors in Bangladeshi obese children. Material and methods: Overweight or obese children, between 6-18 years of age, attending the obesity clinic of the Department of Endocrinology, BSMMU were enrolled. Waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure (BP) were measured and blood samples were taken for estimation of glucose, insulin, lipid profile and adiponectin. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), serum insulin and lipid profile were estimated by automated analyzer. Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated from fasting insulin and fasting plasma glucose values. Serum adiponectin (total) was measured by ELISA method using DRG ELISA kit, Germany. Results:A total of 78 overweight or obese children of 6-18-year of age were enrolled. The mean (±SD) age of the study population was 12.22 ± 2.56 years and the mean BMI was 28.79 ± 4.54 kg/m2. Mean (±SD) serum adiponectin was 36.93 ± 17.85 µg/ml in 78 overweight/obese children. One way ANOVA showed no significant (P= 0.582) difference of adiponectin levels among children with overweight and different grades of obesity. There was no significant correlation between adiponectin and measures of generalized (r=0.035, p=0.763) or central (r=0.098, p=0.392) obesity. Also, no significant correlation was found between serum adiponectin level and any of cardiovascular risk factors of obesity or metabolic health. Conclusion: The study showed high serum adiponectin level in obese Bangladeshi children. Also, no association was found between serum adiponectin levels with grades of obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors among obese children of Bangladesh. IMC J Med Sci. 2023; 17(2):009. While Covid-19 pandemic has affected countries across the world, the burden has been shared disproportionately by urban poor from the cities in Global South. In much of Global South, while cities have emerged as growth centers, they are mostly driven by informalities, belying the image of cities, visualized in the mainstream development economics literature as a place of secured formal jobs that free one from the drudgery of rural life. Covid-19 pandemic has exposed these fault-lines in the cities. India serves as a typical case of such urban-centric growth, with informal workers, predominated by disadvantaged social and religious categories, accounting for 81% of workers in urban space. In cities, migrant in general and seasonal migrants increasingly account for bulk of informal workforce. The lockdown imposed in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic left the community of households reliant on informal works for livelihoods, without any rights and entitlements, which affect their access to food. The review of evidence collected in both primary surveys and macro level data points towards sluggishness in recovery of jobs, which coupled with high food inflation, suggests that access to food continues to be an issue in urban governance. The paper calls for a roadmap entailing both short-term and long-term measures to build sustainable urban livelihoods for ensuring food secure urban space in India.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), especially in the era of mammographic screening, is a commonly diagnosed breast tumor. Despite the low breast cancer mortality risk, management with breast conserving surgery (BCS) and radiotherapy (RT) is the prevailing treatment approach in order to reduce the risk of local recurrence (LR), including invasive LR, which carries a subsequent risk of breast cancer mortality. However, reliable and accurate individual risk prediction remains elusive and RT continues to be standardly recommended for most women with DCIS. Three molecular biomarkers have been studied to better estimate LR risk after BCS—Oncotype DX DCIS score, DCISionRT Decision Score and its associated Residual Risk subtypes, and Oncotype 21-gene Recurrence Score. All these molecular biomarkers represent important efforts towards improving predicted risk of LR after BCS. To prove clinical utility, these biomarkers require careful predictive modeling with calibration and external validation, and evidence of benefit to patients; on this front, further research is needed. Most trials do not incorporate molecular biomarkers in evaluating de-escalation of therapy for DCIS; however, one—the Prospective Evaluation of Breast-Conserving Surgery Alone in Low-Risk DCIS (ELISA) trial—incorporates the Oncotype DX DCIS score in defining a low-risk population and is an important next step in this line of research.

Abstract Background Symptom burden in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer is poorly characterized but impacts quality of life. Methods All Ontario, Canada AYA aged 15–29 years at diagnosis between 2010 and 2018 were linked to population‐based healthcare databases, including to Edmonton Symptom Assessment System‐revised (ESAS) scores, an 11‐point scale routinely obtained at the time of cancer‐related outpatient visits and collected provincially. Multistate models estimated mean duration of symptom severity states [none (0) vs. mild (1 vs. 2 vs. 3) vs. moderate (4–6) vs. severe (7–10)], trajectories, and subsequent mortality risk. Variables associated with severe symptoms were also determined. Results In total, 4296 AYA with ≥1 ESAS score within a year of diagnosis were included (median age 25 years). Prevalent moderate/severe symptoms included fatigue (59% of AYA) and anxiety (44%). Across symptom type, AYA reporting moderate symptoms were likelier to subsequently experience improvement versus worsening. Risk of death within 6 months increased with increasing symptom burden and was highest in AYA with severe dyspnea (9.0%), pain (8.0%), or drowsiness (7.5%). AYA in the poorest urban neighborhoods were more likely to experience severe symptoms than in the wealthiest areas, with twice the odds of reporting severe depression [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.95, 95th confidence interval (95% CI) 1.37–2.78], pain (OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.39–2.70), and dyspnea (OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.27–3.02). Conclusions AYA with cancer experience substantial symptom burden. Risk of death increased with symptom severity. Interventions targeting cancer fatigue and anxiety, and targeting AYA in lower‐income neighborhoods, are likely to improve quality of life in this population.

Abstract Background Little is known about the association between the COVID‐19 pandemic and early survival among newly diagnosed cancer patients. Methods This retrospective population‐based cohort study used linked administrative datasets from Ontario, Canada. Adults (≥18 years) who received a cancer diagnosis between March 15 and December 31, 2020, were included in a pandemic cohort, while those diagnosed during the same dates in 2018/2019 were included in a pre‐pandemic cohort. All patients were followed for one full year after the date of diagnosis. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess survival in relation to the pandemic, patient characteristics at diagnosis, and the modality of first cancer treatment as a time‐varying covariate. Interaction terms were explored to measure the pandemic association with survival for each cancer type. Results Among 179,746 patients, 53,387 (29.7%) were in the pandemic cohort and 37,741 (21.0%) died over the first post‐diagnosis year. No association between the pandemic and survival was found when adjusting for patient characteristics at diagnosis (HR 0.99 [95% CI 0.96–1.01]), while marginally better survival was found for the pandemic cohort when the modality of treatment was additionally considered (HR 0.97 [95% CI 0.95–0.99]). When examining each cancer type, only a new melanoma diagnosis was associated with a worse survival in the pandemic cohort (HR 1.25 [95% CI 1.05–1.49]). Conclusions Among patients able to receive a cancer diagnosis during the pandemic, one‐year overall survival was not different than those diagnosed in the previous 2 years. This study highlights the complex nature of the COVID‐19 pandemic impact on cancer care.

Abstract Background Little is known about the COVID‐19 pandemic impact on the provision of diagnostic imaging and physician visits at cancer diagnosis. Methods We used administrative databases from Ontario, Canada, to identify MRI/CT/ultrasound scans and in‐person/virtual physician visits conducted with cancer patients within 91 days around the date of diagnosis in 2016–2020. In separate segmented regression procedures, we assessed the trends in weekly volume of these services per thousand cancer patients in prepandemic (June 26, 2016 to March 14, 2020), the change in mean volume at the start of the pandemic, and the additional change in weekly volume during the pandemic (March 15, 2020, to September 26, 2020). Results Totally, 403,561 cancer patients were included. On March 15, 2020 (COVID‐19 arrived), mean scan volume decreased by 12.3% (95% CI: 6.4%–17.9%) where ultrasound decreased the most by 31.8% (95% CI: 23.9%–37.0%). Afterward, the volume of all scans increased further by 1.6% per week (95% CI: 1.3%–2.0%), where ultrasound increased the fastest by 2.4% (95% CI: 1.8%–2.9%). Mean in‐person visits dropped by 47.4% when COVID‐19 started (95% CI: 41.6%–52.6%) while virtual visits rose by 55.15‐fold (95% CI: 4927%‐6173%). In the pandemic (until September 26, 2020), in‐person visits increased each week by 2.6% (95% CI: 2.0%–3.2%), but no change was observed for virtual visits (p ‐value = 0.10). Conclusions Provision of diagnostic imaging and virtual visits at cancer diagnosis has been increasing since the start of COVID‐19 and has exceeded prepandemic utilization levels. Future work should monitor the impact of these shifts on quality of delivered care.

This process also detects many challenges and defines and advises a proper solution to the problems that the Garments industry is facing in the current situation. Morphometric analysis and sub-watershed prioritising were carried out to ascertain the Ajay river basin's susceptibility to flooding. The whole Ajay river basin was divided into seven smaller watersheds, and a ranking algorithm was used to the morphometric features of these smaller watersheds to determine their prioritization rank. 13 distinct morphometric criteria of linear, relief and areal characters have been found and used to rank and priorities sub-watersheds, for critical analysis. Some morphometric parameters have a direct correlation with flood occurrence, whilst others have an indirect association with flood occurrence. According to their relative significance and impact on the floods, all parameters have been given weighted ratings. The basin with the lowest parameter value is placed first in the ranking. According to the results of the study, sub-watershed 7, which is located in the lower catchment of the Ajay river basin, is very vulnerable to floods. The findings of this research may be utilized as advice by competent authorities in the early stages of flood mitigation efforts, if necessary.

Due to their excellent prospects in biological applications, Schiff bases and their complexes are a source of continuing interest. The present study examines the formation of four cobalt(II) complexes with the reduced Schiff base N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)phenylalanine (PhAlaSal) in alkaline aqueous solution by pH-metry. UV–Vis and ESI–MS studies confirmed the model of proposed species. Kinetic analysis indicated that the single- and bi-ligand cobalt(II) complexes transitioned from octahedral to tetrahedral structures. The Schiff base and its complexes detected under physiological pH were tested for antimicrobial abilities and compared with analogous structures of the Schiff base derivative, N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)alanine (AlaSal). The ability of these structures to influence cell growth was tested on L929 mouse fibroblasts and on cervix and gastric adenocarcinoma cancer cell lines. N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)phenylalanine demonstrates greater antimicrobial efficacy than N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)alanine but also higher cytotoxicity; however, it is nonetheless effective against cancer cells. In turn, AlaSal demonstrates low cytotoxicity for fibroblasts and high cytotoxicity for gastric adenocarcinoma epithelial cells at bacteriostatic concentration for Helicobacter pylori and Candida strains. The presence of these microorganisms in the gastric milieu supports the development of gastritis and gastric cancer; AlaSal therapy may be simultaneously effective against both. Due to their cytotoxicity, Schiff base complexes are not suitable for use against fungal and bacterial infections, but may effectively prevent cancer cell growth. Context: Comorbidities in alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS) are often associated with poor treatment outcomes and high service utilization. Deliberate self-harm (DSH) in India is a silent epidemic. There is a shortage of research on individuals with ADS, psychiatric comorbidities, and DSH. Aim: To study DSH and psychiatric comorbidity in persons with ADS. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional study of 1-year duration is conducted in out patient department/indoor patient department of a tertiary care hospital. Methods and Material: Eighty-one individuals with ADS were selected purposefully. A semi-structured pro forma, the severity of alcohol dependence questionnaire, Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), and Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory were administered for assessment. The statistical analysis used is as follows: correlation statistics and logistic regression. Results: Most subjects were married, belonged to upper-middle socioeconomic status, had at least secondary education, and had moderate alcohol dependence severity. Almost 3/4th of the subjects had at least one lifetime psychiatric disorder. A past episode of major depressive disorder was found in 47%. Nearly 20% of study subjects had a history of DSH, which was significantly associated with unmarried status, and earlier age of alcohol dependence. Marital status, educational level, and age of onset of alcohol dependence explain 64.3% of the variance in DSH attempts. Suicidality was significantly related to the presence of DSH. Conclusions: The study found a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders and a history of DSH in individuals with ADS. The study confirmed the association between DSH and suicidality and indicated a specific subpopulation of ADS who need thorough clinical assessments to recognize these psychiatric comorbidities and DSH.
