Abstract

Angular distributions of the elastic, inelastic, and breakup cross sections of the halo nucleus Be-11 on Au-197 were measured at energies below (E-lab = 31.9 MeV) and around (39.6 MeV) the Coulomb barrier. These three channels were unambiguously separated for the first time for reactions of Be-11 on a high-Z target at low energies. The experiment was performed at TRIUMF (Vancouver, Canada). The differential cross sections were compared with three different calculations: semiclassical, inert-core continuum-coupled-channels and continuum-coupled-channels ones with including core deformation. These results show conclusively that the elastic and inelastic differential cross sections can only be accounted for if core-excited admixtures are taken into account. The cross sections for these channels strongly depend on the B(E1) distribution in Be-11, and the reaction mechanism is sensitive to the entanglement of core and halo degrees of freedom in Be-11.

Abstract

Abstract

Rhinovirus infections cause exacerbations of eosinophilic airway disease. The acute effects of allergen‐challenge on nasal interleukin‐8 (IL‐8), eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), and α2‐macroglobulin were examined in atopic subjects with common cold symptoms. Twenty‐three patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis were inoculated with human rhinovirus 16 outside the pollen season. Diluent and allergen challenges, followed by nasal lavages, were carried out about 3 months before and 4 days after virus inoculation. Abstract

Objective: Treatment with most antipsychotics is associated with an increased risk of weight gain and metabolic disturbances. In a randomized trial, we previously demonstrated that 16 weeks of glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonist liraglutide treatment vs. placebo significantly reduced glucometabolic disturbances and body weight in prediabetic, overweight/obese schizophrenia‐spectrum disorder patients treated with clozapine or olanzapine. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the beneficial effects of the 16‐week intervention were sustained beyond the intervention period. Method: One year after completion of the intervention, we investigated changes in body weight, fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, C‐peptide, and lipids comparing 1‐year follow‐up levels to end of treatment (week 16) and baseline (week 0) levels. Results: From end of treatment to the 1‐year follow‐up, body weight had increased in the liraglutide‐treated group. However, compared to baseline levels, the placebo‐subtracted body weight loss remained significantly reduced (−3.8 kg, 95% CI: −7.3 to −0.2, P = 0.04). Fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, C‐peptide, and lipids had each returned to baseline levels 1 year after stopping liraglutide. Conclusion: The body weight reduction during 16 weeks of liraglutide treatment was partially sustained 1 year after the intervention was completed. Abstract

1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation data as well as 1H decoupled 13C spectra have been utilized to study the dynamics of the molecular disorder in solid 9-hydroxyphenalenone. In the room-temperature phase—stable between 255 and 380 K—the proton spectrum is narrowed compared to the spectrum of a static structure. This is consistent with a dynamically disordered structure where one of the two nonequivalent molecules reorients rapidly between its two possible equilibrium orientations. The proton spin-lattice relaxation has a maximum of 7.2 s-1 in the same phase at about 355 K, in close agreement with a value of 7.6 s-1 calculated from the dynamical disorder model. The 1H decoupled 13C powder spectrum in the room-temperature phase is also consistent with this picture. Above the 385 K phase transition, the 13C powder spectrum is approaching axial symmetry, proving that all molecules reorient rapidly in that phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Duplex scanning may be used to detect high-grade stenoses in the mesenteric vessels in patients with suspect Chronic Mesenterial Ischemia (CMI). The aim of the study was to evaluate reserve and collateral vascular function in relation to bowel symptoms in patients with CMI. Methods: Fourteen consecutive patients, referred to the vascular laboratory with suspicion of CMI, 7 men (average 79 years), and 7 women (average 66 years), were investigated by Duplex ultrasound (DUS) of the visceral arteries. All patients were examined both fasting and 30 min after a standard meal. A reference group of 10 patients with diffuse bowel symptoms (5 men and 5 women, (average 75 years) were investigated by the same DUS protocol, all showing normal mesenteric arteries. Possible collateral reserve capacity was defined as a marked increase of flow velocities (>20%) in vessels with lesions and/or in non-affected vessels. Results: All patients had a significant stenosis (>70%) in one or several visceral arteries at the baseline DUS investigation. Six patients had abdominal pain after the test meal, whilst 8 patients experienced no pain. In patients without postprandial pain a possible collateral reserve capacity was detected. In this group superior mesenteric artery (SMA) peak systolic velocity (PSV) increased significantly (baseline PSV 2.6 ± 1.3 m/s vs. postprandial PSV 4.1 ± 1.6 m/s, P < 0.05) whereas patients with postprandial pain showed no signs of collateral reserve capacity in any vessel except one patient who showed possible collateral reserve in one vessel. In the reference group a significant increase of PSV was seen in SMA only, (1.7 ± 0.6, vs. 2.5 ± 0.9, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Postprandial duplex adds information about the functional flow limitation of the stenosis and possible collateral reserve flow capacity. Further studies have to be performed to establish criteria for selection of patients appropriate for intervention.

Abstract

The reaction mechanisms of the two-neutron transfer reaction $^{12}$C($^6$He,$^4$He) have been studied at 30 MeV at the TRIUMF ISAC-II facility using the SHARC charged-particle detector array. Optical potential parameters have been extracted from the analysis of the elastic scattering angular distribution. The new potential has been applied to the study of the transfer angular distribution to the 2$^+_2$ 8.32 MeV state in $^{14}$C, using a realistic 3-body $^6$He model and advanced shell model calculations for the carbon structure, allowing to calculate the relative contributions of the simultaneous and sequential two-neutron transfer. The reaction model provides a good description of the 30 MeV data set and shows that the simultaneous process is the dominant transfer mechanism. Sensitivity tests of optical potential parameters show that the final results can be considerably affected by the choice of optical potentials. A reanalysis of data measured previously at 18 MeV however, is not as well described by the same reaction model, suggesting that one needs to include higher order effects in the reaction mechanism., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures
