New tricyanofuran intramolecular charge transfer dyes comprising the hydrazone group were prepared and fully characterized in order to study their possible solvatochromism, dyeing ability, and antimicrobial activity. The preparation of the hydrazone dyes was achieved in relatively good yields starting from different aromatic amines. The hydrazone functional group was presented via the azo-coupling reaction of the tricyanofuran compound by the properly substituted diazonium chloride. Chemical structures of the prepared hydrazones were confirmed via nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H- and 13C-NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and elemental analysis (C, H, and N). The UV-visible absorption spectra of the produced sensor colorants displayed interesting solvatochromism in solvents with a different polarity, which was found to be affected by the substituents bonded to the aromatic hydrazone moiety. The pH molecular switching was investigated through tuning the intramolecular charge transfer stimulated by the reversible deprotonation/protonation process in acetonitrile solution showing color change from yellow to purple. The produced disperse dyestuffs were employed for dyeing polyester fibers to introduce acceptable color strength and colorfastness properties. Moreover, the dyes verified a weak to moderate antimicrobial activity against some selected pathogens, including S. aureus, E. coli, and Candida albicans.

Abstract Superhydrophobic 3D robust materials are introduced for the separation of hexane and water. For the first time, novel 3D zigzag polystyrene on graphene‐incorporated polyurethane (3D zz‐PS/GR/PU) is prepared using exclusively natural sunlight without any chemical initiator. The zigzag polystyrene growth is accomplished by polymerizing the styrene vapors. The natural sunlight provides a compact 3D zz‐PS/GR/PU material with superoleophilic and hydrophobic channels that allow for the rapid passage of oil, whereas water is entirely prevented from passing. The 3D zz‐PS/GR/PU compact channels are transformed into the compressible material by treating them with toluene without affecting the hydrophobicity of the material. The 3D zz‐PS/GR/PU displays a high‐water contact angle of approximately 150°. The developed materials are characterized by FTIR, SEM, and BET. The graphene incorporation makes surface area of the 3D zz‐PS/GR/PU substantially large compared with PU. It is improved from 15 to 67 m2 g−1. The pore size of the adsorption and desorption in the 3D zz‐PS/GR/PU is also reduced from 354 and 352 Å to 34 and 33 Å. The 3D zz‐PS/GR/PU satisfies the requirement of high‐demanding superhydrophobic materials, like a low‐cost fabrication process, reusability, and tunability. This strategy can trigger large‐scale production with a controlled morphology.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the most heterogeneous chronic autoimmune disease; it is characterized by the presence of auto reactive B and T cells, responsible for the aberrant production of a broad and heterogeneous group of autoantibodies. Recent studies using various detection methods have demonstrated the elevations of circulating DNA in SLE patients. Aim of the study: The current study aimed to measure cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) in SLE patients as a potential tool to predict disease activity and treatment follow up. Subjects and methods: 52 of SLE patients with age ranging from 10 to 48 years were randomly selected and 25 healthy subjects with age and gender matched with the patients were included as a control group. Thorough clinical examination stressing on the central nervous system, vascular, renal, rash, musculoskeletal, mucocutaneous manifestations, and fever was done for patients. The following investigations were done: Complete blood count (CBC), kidney function tests, C-reactive protein (CRP), routine autoantibodies for autoimmune diseases, complements (C3 & C4), anti-nucleosome antibodies and cf-DNA by real time PCR (RT-PCR). Results: The levels of anti-double stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA), anti-nucleosome Ab, and cf-DNA were significantly increased in SLE patients compared to controls. The cf-DNA level was correlated to markers of disease severity namely CRP and anti-nucleosome. A significant reduction in levels of cf-DNA, anti-nucleosome Ab and anti-dsDNA was noticed after therapy. Conclusion: Our findings support that the measurement of cf-DNA appears to be a useful marker in addition to laboratory tests used in SLE diagnosis. High correlation with markers of disease severity suggesting its role in disease pathogenesis and decreasing its level after therapy makes it to be a marker of treatment follow-up.

In this work, ferric oxide nanoparticle decorated carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes (CNF/Fe2O3 and CNT/Fe2O3) were synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), zeta potential and BET surface area analyzer. The prepared nanocomposites were evaluated or the removal of phenol ions from aqueous solution. The effects of experimental parameters, such as shaking speed, pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration, were evaluated for the phenol removal efficiency. The adsorption experimental data were represented by both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The Langmuir isotherm model best fitted the data on the adsorption of phenol, with a high correlation coefficient. The adsorption capacities, as determined by the Langmuir isotherm model were 0.842, 1.098, 1.684 and 2.778 mg/g for raw CNFs, raw CNTs, CNF–Fe2O3 and CNT–Fe2O3, respectively.

PURPOSE: Population-based prevalence surveys are essential for decision-making on interventions to achieve trachoma elimination as a public health problem. This paper outlines the methodologies of Tropical Data, which supports work to undertake those surveys. METHODS: Tropical Data is a consortium of partners that supports health ministries worldwide to conduct globally standardised prevalence surveys that conform to World Health Organization recommendations. Founding principles are health ministry ownership, partnership and collaboration, and quality assurance and quality control at every step of the survey process. Support covers survey planning, survey design, training, electronic data collection and fieldwork, and data management, analysis and dissemination. Methods are adapted to meet local context and needs. Customisations, operational research and integration of other diseases into routine trachoma surveys have also been supported. RESULTS: Between 29th February 2016 and 24th April 2023, 3373 trachoma surveys across 50 countries have been supported, resulting in 10,818,502 people being examined for trachoma. CONCLUSION: This health ministry-led, standardised approach, with support from the start to the end of the survey process, has helped all trachoma elimination stakeholders to know where interventions are needed, where interventions can be stopped, and when elimination as a public health problem has been achieved. Flexibility to meet specific country contexts, adaptation to changes in global guidance and adjustments in response to user feedback have facilitated innovation in evidence-based methodologies, and supported health ministries to strive for global disease control targets.

OBJECTIVE: To achieve consensus on critical steps and create an assessment tool for actual and simulated pediatric tracheostomy emergencies that incorporates human and systems factors along with tracheostomy-specific steps. METHODS: A modified Delphi method was used. Using REDCap software, an instrument comprising 29 potential items was circulated to 171 tracheostomy and simulation experts. Consensus criteria were determined a priori with a goal of consolidating and ordering 15 to 25 final items. In the first round, items were rated as keep or remove. In the second and third rounds, experts were asked to rate the importance of each item on a 9-point Likert scale. Items were refined in subsequent iterations based on analysis of results and respondents comments. RESULTS: The response rates were 125/171 (73.1%) for the first round, 111/125 (88.8%) for the second round, and 109/125 (87.2%) for the third round. 133 comments were incorporated. Consensus (>60% participants scoring ≥8, or mean score >7.5) was reached on 22 items distributed across three domains. There were 12, 4, and 6 items in the domains of tracheostomy-specific steps, team and personnel factors, and equipment respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The resultant assessment tool can be used to assess both tracheostomy-specific steps as well as systems factors affecting hospital team response to simulated and clinical pediatric tracheostomy emergencies. The tool can also be used to guide debriefing discussions of both simulated and clinical emergencies, and to spur quality improvement initiatives. Facial cleanliness and sanitation are postulated to reduce trachoma transmission, but there are no previous data on community-level herd protection thresholds. We characterize associations between active trachoma, access to improved sanitation facilities, and access to improved water sources for the purpose of face washing, with the aim of estimating community-level or herd protection thresholds.We used cluster-sampled Global Trachoma Mapping Project data on 884,850 children aged 1-9 years from 354,990 households in 13 countries. We employed multivariable mixed-effects modified Poisson regression models to assess the relationships between water and sanitation coverage and trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF). We observed lower TF prevalence among those with household-level access to improved sanitation (prevalence ratio, PR = 0.87; 95%CI: 0.83-0.91), and household-level access to an improved washing water source in the residence/yard (PR = 0.81; 95%CI: 0.75-0.88). Controlling for household-level water and latrine access, we found evidence of community-level protection against TF for children living in communities with high sanitation coverage (PR80-90% = 0.87; 95%CI: 0.73-1.02; PR90-100% = 0.76; 95%CI: 0.67-0.85). Community sanitation coverage levels greater than 80% were associated with herd protection against TF (PR = 0.77; 95%CI: 0.62-0.97)-that is, lower TF in individuals whose households lacked individual sanitation but who lived in communities with high sanitation coverage. For community-level water coverage, there was no apparent threshold, although we observed lower TF among several of the higher deciles of community-level water coverage.Our study provides insights into the community water and sanitation coverage levels that might be required to best control trachoma. Our results suggest access to adequate water and sanitation can be important components in working towards the 2020 target of eliminating trachoma as a public health problem.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) integrate the advantages of WLANs and mobile Ad Hoc networks, which have become the key techniques of next-generation wireless networks in the context of emergency recovery. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are multi-hop wireless networks with instant deployment, self-healing, self-organization and self-configuration features. These capabilities make WMNs a promising technology for incident and emergency communication. An incident area network (IAN) needs a reliable and lively routing path during disaster recovery and emergency response operations when infrastructure-based communications and power resources have been destroyed and no routes are available. Power aware routing plays a significant role in WMNs, in order to provide continuous efficient emergency services. The existing power aware routing algorithms used in wireless networks cannot fully fit the characteristics of WMNs, to be used for emergency recovery. This paper proposes a power aware routing algorithm (PARA) for WMNs, which selects optimal paths to send packets, mainly based on the power level of next node along the path. This algorithm was implemented and tested in a proven simulator. The analytic results show that the proposed power node-type aware routing algorithm metric can clearly improve the network performance by reducing the network overheads and maintaining a high delivery ratio with low latency.

In future 5G systems, the millimeter wave (mmWave) band will be used to support a large capacity for current mobile broadband. Therefore, the radio access technology (RAT) should be made available for 5G devices to help in distinct situations, for example device-to-device communications (D2D) and multi-hops. This paper presents ultra-wideband channel measurements for millimeter wave bands at 19, 28, and 38 GHz. We used an ultra-wideband channel sounder (1 GHz bandwidth) in an indoor to outdoor (I2O) environment for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. In an NLOS environment, there is no direct path (line of sight), and all of the contributed paths are received from different physical objects by refection propagation phenomena. Hence, in this work, a directional horn antenna (high gain) was used at the transmitter, while an omnidirectional antenna was used at the receiver to collect the radio signals from all directions. The path loss and temporal dispersion were examined based on the acquired measurement data—the 5G propagation characteristics. Two different path loss models were used, namely close-in (CI) free space reference distance and alpha-beta-gamma (ABG) models. The time dispersion parameters were provided based on a mean excess delay, a root mean square (RMS) delay spread, and a maximum excess delay. The path loss exponent for this NLOS specific environment was found to be low for all of the proposed frequencies, and the RMS delay spread values were less than 30 ns for all of the measured frequencies, and the average RMS delay spread values were 19.2, 19.3, and 20.3 ns for 19, 28, and 38 GHz frequencies, respectively. Moreover, the mean excess delay values were found also at 26.1, 25.8, and 27.3 ns for 19, 28, and 38 GHz frequencies, respectively. The propagation signal through the NLOS channel at 19, 28, and 38 GHz was strong with a low delay; it is concluded that these bands are reliable for 5G systems in short-range applications.

Theorists and educators increasingly highlight the importance of computational thinking in STEM education. While various scaffolding strategies describe how to best support this skillset (i.e., paired programming, worked examples), less research has focused on the design and development of these digital tools. One way to support computational thinking and data science is through block coding and other ways that visualize the coding process. However, less is known about the learning experience design of these tools. Based on this gap, this work-in-progress study compared the learning experience design of novices and those with more advanced understanding of computational thinking. Results found differences emerge in the perceived dynamic interaction and scaffolding constructs of learning experience design. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Students employing problem-based learning (PBL) face complex problems admitting multiple solutions. Knowledge maps are an effective tool to support students in PBL to represent, analyze, and guide their knowledge structure. Previous studies have examined the use of knowledge mapping techniques in both individual and collaborative learning process. These studies explored how knowledge mapping influenced students' learning outcomes and their knowledge understanding, but they did not document how the map structure changed when shifting from individual to collaborative mapping process. In this work-in-process study, we collected maps from students first as individuals and then as they collaboratively worked in groups to solve a case. We examined two questions: (Q1) how does the structure of a map change when shifting from individuals to groups, and (Q2) how does the size of a group mediate these changes. We used 12 network science metrics capturing the breadth (e.g., number of edges) and complexity (e.g., number of cycles) of problems and compared these metrics in individuals versus groups (Q1) and across group sizes (Q2). Based on 44 individual maps arranged in 10 groups of four or five students, we found that (1) five metrics significantly differ (p < 0.05 in a one-way ANOVA) between individual and group maps; and (2) only the number of edges and paths are affected by the size of a group (based on Tukey's HSD test). Our first result confirms that learner-learner interactions can enhance performance. The second result shows that group sizes of four or five students have no implications on the results, hence instructors who may currently be hesitating between these two options may choose either size. Future studies may reveal whether differences exist between pairs, medium group sizes, or larger groups.

This paper reports on development of a system consisting of a portable sequential injector coupled with potentiometric unit for sensing of chlorpheniramine (CPA), based on the reaction of CPA with potassium permanganate in acidic media. Various experimental conditions affecting the potential intensity were studied and incorporated into the procedure. Under the optimum conditions, linear relationship between the CPA concentration and peak area was obtained for the concentration range of 0.1â50Â ppm. Increasing and maintaining student engagement within anatomy education at a pre-collegiate level is a challenge that educators continue to encounter. Finding an appropriate level of difficulty that prepares students for the rigor of undergraduate anatomy education while balancing the need to inspire student interest in STEM-related fields of study can inadvertently discourage students, particularly when content is relayed in a 'traditional' lecture-based curriculum. The University of Colorado's Pre-Health Scholars Program (CUPS) is an academic enrichment program for high school students from under-represented minority groups who are interested in healthcare and STEM-related professions. To address the challenges in pre-collegiate anatomy education, the CUPS anatomy curriculum has shifted away from instruction that is purely lecture-based, to a project-oriented curriculum utilizing 3D printing. Here, students are encouraged to connect hands-on experiences and collaborate on individualized projects that require mastery of anatomical principles to create. Students are also introduced to anatomic structures in a multi-dimensional fashion that allows them to examine the complementary relationship between structure and function. This model of curriculum has the potential to improve engagement and create better foundations of anatomical knowledge through thoughtful instructional design. This article focuses on the design decisions and curricular components of this course.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) display an elevated risk of thrombosis. Thrombosis occurs in cardiovascular events, such as venous thromboembolism, stroke, and acute coronary syndrome, and is a cause of hemodialysis vascular access dysfunction. CKD leads to the accumulation of uremic toxins, which exerts toxic effects on blood and the vessel wall. Some uremic toxins result from tryptophan metabolization in the gut through the indolic and the kynurenine pathways. An increasing number of studies are highlighting the link between such uremic toxins and thrombosis in CKD. In this review, we describe the thrombotic mechanisms induced by tryptophan-derived uremic toxins (TDUT). These mechanisms include an increase in plasma levels of procoagulant factors, induction of platelet hyperactivity, induction of endothelial dysfunction/ impairment of endothelial healing, decrease in nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, and production of procoagulant microparticles. We focus on one important prothrombotic mechanism: The induction of tissue factor (TF), the initiator of the extrinsic pathway of the blood coagulation. This induction occurs via a new pathway, dependent on the transcription factor Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), the receptor of TDUT in cells. A better understanding of the prothrombotic mechanisms of uremic toxins could help to find novel therapeutic targets to prevent thrombosis in CKD.

New World arenaviruses cause fatal hemorrhagic disease in South America. Pirital virus (PIRV), a mammarenavirus hosted by Alston’s cotton rat (Sigmodon alstoni), causes a disease in Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) (biosafety level-3, BSL-3) that has many pathologic similarities to the South American hemorrhagic fevers (BSL-4) and, thus, is considered among the best small-animal models for human arenavirus disease. Here, we extend in greater detail previously described clinical and pathological findings in Syrian hamsters and provide evidence for a pro-inflammatory macrophage response during PIRV infection. The liver was the principal target organ of the disease, and signs of Kupffer cell involvement were identified in mortally infected hamster histopathology data. Differential expression analysis of liver mRNA revealed signatures of the pro-inflammatory response, hematologic dysregulation, interferon pathway and other host response pathways, including 17 key transcripts that were also reported in two non-human primate (NHP) arenavirus liver-infection models, representing both Old and New World mammarenavirus infections. Although antigen presentation may differ among rodent and NHP species, key hemostatic and innate immune-response components showed expression parallels. Signatures of pro-inflammatory macrophage involvement in PIRV-infected livers included enrichment of Ifng, Nfkb2, Stat1, Irf1, Klf6, Il1b, Cxcl10, and Cxcl11 transcripts. Together, these data indicate that pro-inflammatory macrophage M1 responses likely contribute to the pathogenesis of acute PIRV infection.
