The guava cottony scale, Capulinia linarosae Kondo & Gullan (Hemiptera: Eriococcidae), is an important pest of guava, Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae) in northern Colombia and Venezuela. A species of Metaphycus (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is the only known primary parasitoid associated with this insect pest. The parasitoid is herein described as M. marensis Chirinos & Kondo, sp. nov., based on morphological characteristics of the adult female and male. Biological studies on adult longevity, fecundity, host preference, and sex ratio were conducted. The maximum longevity of the female and the male were 8.0 and 6.5 days, respectively, when fed with diluted honey. On average, a fed mated female laid approximately 40 eggs. Adult females of M. marensis were shown to prefer to parasitize 11- to 15-day-old adult females of C. linarosae and do not parasitize first-instar nymphs of the host eriococcid. The female-to-male sex ratio of the parasitoid was 2.24: 1. When ovipositing females of M. marensis were given only small-sized individuals (second-instar nymphs) of C. linarosae , generally the resulting progeny was a single male wasp. This parasitoid species has arrhenotokous reproduction and is a facultative gregarious parasitoid. These results show a short adult longevity, as well as a relatively low fecundity of the female compared with studies conducted on other Metaphycus species. Ureides are nitrogenous compounds with a special function in some legume under nitrogen fixing conditions, the ureidic legumes. In this group, ureides are the predominant nitrogen transport molecule from nodules to the upper part, whereas amidic legumes use amides as nitrogen transport compounds. In this study, the ureide levels have been analysed in seedlings from four ureidic and four amidic legume plants. It has been found that the differentiation among ureide and amide plants already exists in seedlings during early seedling development, with high levels of ureide and allantoinase activity in cotyledons and embryonic axes from ureide plants. Since ureides have been implicated in the response of plant to several stress, total hydrosoluble antioxidant capacity and the levels of several antioxidant activities have been determined and compared among these two legume groups. The total antioxidant capacity did not follow any differential pattern in cotyledons or embryonic axes for the analysed plants. The levels of superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase in both embryonic axes and cotyledons are statistical different between amide and ureide seedlings, whereas the catalase activity was similar among these groups of plants. Begomoviruses are one of the major groups of plant viruses with an important economic impact on crop production in tropical and subtropical regions. The global spread of its polyphagous vector, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci , has contributed to the emergence and diversification of species within this genus. In this study, we found a putative novel begomovirus infecting tomato plants in Venezuela without a cognate DNA-B component. This begomovirus was genetically characterized and compared with related species. Furthermore, its infectivity was demonstrated by agroinoculation of infectious clones in tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ) and Nicotiana benthamiana plants. The name Tomato twisted leaf virus (ToTLV) is proposed. ToTLV showed the typical genome organization of the DNA-A component of New World bipartite begomoviruses. However, the single DNA component of ToTLV was able to develop systemic infection in tomato and N. benthamiana plants, suggesting a monopartite nature of its genome. Interestingly, an additional open reading frame ORF was observed in ToTLV encompassing the intergenic region and the coat protein gene, which is not present in other closely related begomoviruses. A putative transcript from this region was amplified by strand-specific reverse transcription-PCR. Along with recent studies, our results showed that the diversity of monopartite begomoviruses from the New World is greater than previously thought.

Quorum sensing (QS) and quorum quenching (QQ) are increasingly reported in biological wastewater treatment processes because of their inherent roles in biofilm development, bacterial aggregation, granulation, colonization, and biotransformation of pollutants. As such, the fundamentals and ubiquitous nature of QS bacteria are critical for fully understanding the process of the wastewater treatment system. In this article, the details of QS-based strategies related to community behaviors and phenotypes in wastewater treatment systems were reviewed. The molecular aspects and coexistence of QS and QQ bacteria were also mentioned, which provide evidence that future wastewater treatment will indispensably rely on QS-based strategies. In addition, recent attempts focusing on the use of QQ for biofilm or biofouling control were also summarized. Nevertheless, there are still several challenges and knowledge gaps that warrant future targeted research on the ecological niche, abundance, and community of QS- and QQ-bacteria in environmental settings or engineered systems., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Coptoborus ochromactonus Smith and Cognato is a recently described xyleborine ambrosia beetle pest associated with balsa, Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. Ex Lam.) Urb., in Ecuador. This pest has caused significant loss of cultivated balsa in Ecuador, but little is known of its biology and ecology. Based on examination of multiple gallery systems, this study describes the gallery pattern and life cycle of C. ochromactonus and confirms the generic identity of the symbiotic fungus. Females initiated attack, excavating a gallery perpendicular to the bole. The primary tunnel branched into a secondary tunnel at a mean 3.13 mm. This first secondary tunnel was excavated in a horizontal plane between the phloem and xylem for a mean 18.0 mm. Along its length, two tertiary tunnels were constructed on each side, measuring a mean 26.0 and 20.0 mm, respectively. Conidiophores and conidia of an unidentified Fusarium sp. grew on the tunnel walls and were fed upon by the beetle and her progeny. Coptoborus ochromactonus exhibits sexual dimorphism. The female is 2.6 mm long and possesses a round pronotum, whereas the male is 2.2 mm long and has a quadrate pronotum. The developmental stages last a mean 6, 14, 6, 4 and 30 d for egg, larva, pupa, teneral adult, and adult, respectively, when reared at 25°C. Three larval instars were present, with mean head capsule widths of 0.23, 0.31, and 0.42 mm, respectively. Background: Polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for Gaultheria pumila (Ericaceae) to evaluate genetic diversity and population structure within its native range in Chile. This is a very important Ericaceae endemic to Chile with a large commercial potential. Its resistance to different abiotic conditions makes it a valuable target for genetic improvement., Results: Ten polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci were isolated from Gaultheria pumila using new-generation 454 FLX Titanium pyrosequencing technology. The mean number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 4. Observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.00 to 1.0 and 0.00 to 0.64, respectively., Conclusions: From 10 SSR markers developed for G. pumila, 9 markers are promising candidates for analyzing genetic variation within or between natural populations of G. pumila and other species from the same genus.

To study the acclimation responses of the leaves of saplings of six tree species when changed to low or high levels of irradiance, we carried out a light exposure experiment. Species representative of contrasting shade tolerance groups were identified across a light gradient in the understorey of a Venezuelan Andean cloud forest. Measured traits included gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and morphoanatomical, biochemical and optical properties. Saplings were grown for 6 months in a shade-house receiving 20% photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of full sunlight. Plant samples were then moved to shade-houses receiving low PPF (4%) or high PPF (65%). A factorial model (species×PPF), with repeated measurements (0, 15 and 120 days) was designed. Our results showed that morphological and anatomical traits were more plastic to PPF changes than photosynthetic traits. All species were susceptible to photoinhibition (15 days): shade-intolerant species showed dynamic photoinhibition (120 days), whereas shade-tolerant species presented chronic photoinhibition and the consequent inability to increase C assimilation rates under high PPF. The partially shade-tolerant species showed mixed responses; nonetheless, they exhibited larger adjustments in morphoanatomical and optical properties. Thus the acclimation responses of these species when subject to contrasting light conditions could help to explain their distribution along the light gradient in the understorey.

A new caligid copepod species, Pupulinamantensis sp. n. is described based on female and male specimens collected from the gills of the myliobatid elasmobranch Aetobatuscf.narinari Euphrasen, 1790 captured off the Pacific coast of Ecuador. The new species has a unique combination of characters that diverges from its known congeners, including: (i) weakly developed posterolateral processes on the genital complex; (ii) large spines on posterior surface of maxilliped basis (iii) abdomen slender, unsegmented, approximately 1/2 length and 1/5 width of genital complex; (iv) third exopodal segment of leg II with single long naked spine adjacent to minute, naked lateral spine; (v) velum of leg II with adjacent patch of denticles; (vi) caudal rami slightly less than half the length of genital complex; (vii) post-antennal process with robust, posteriorly directed tine, sclerotized stump posterolaterally, and two multi-sensillate papillae located on or near base of process (viii) post-oral process oval. The overall prevalence of P.mantensis sp. n. on its host was 37.5% and its mean abundance was 1.87 specimens per host. This is the second record of the genus Pupulina from Ecuador and the second record of Pupulina infecting rays of the Myliobatinae genus Aetobatus , of the subfamily Myliobatinae, after its discovery on A.ocellatus in Australia, thus confirming this expansion of its previously known host range to a new elasmobranch subfamily.

Classic swine fever virus (CSFV) is a Pestivirus from the Flaviviridae family that affects pigs worldwide and is endemic in several Latin American countries. However, there are still some countries in the region, including Ecuador, for which CSFV molecular information is lacking. To better understand the epidemiology of CSFV in the Americas, sequences from CSFVs from Ecuador were generated and a phylodynamic analysis of the virus was performed. Sequences for the full-length glycoprotein E2 gene of twenty field isolates were obtained and, along with sequences from strains previously described in the Americas and from the most representative strains worldwide, were used to analyse the phylodynamics of the virus. Bayesian methods were used to test several molecular clock and demographic models. A calibrated ultrametric tree and a Bayesian skyline were constructed, and codons associated with positive selection involving immune scape were detected. The best model according to Bayes factors was the strict molecular clock and Bayesian skyline model, which shows that CSFV has an evolution rate of 3.2 × 10 -4 substitutions per site per year. The model estimates the origin of CSFV in the mid-1500s. There is a strong spatial structure for CSFV in the Americas, indicating that the virus is moving mainly through neighbouring countries. The genetic diversity of CSFV has increased constantly since its appearance, with a slight decrease in mid-twentieth century, which coincides, with eradication campaigns in North America. Even though there is no evidence of strong directional evolution of the E2 gene in CSFV, codons 713, 761, 762 and 975 appear to be selected positively and could be related to virulence or pathogenesis. A study on the electrophile-induced rearrangement of two 15-hydroxygermacranolides, salonitenolide and artemisiifolin, was carried out. These compounds underwent electrophilic intramolecular cyclizations or acid-mediated rearrangements to give sesquiterpene lactones with different skeletons such as eudesmanolides, guaianolides, amorphanolides, or other germacranolides. The cyclization that gives guaianolides can be considered a biomimetic route to this type of sesquiterpene lactones. The use of acetone as a solvent changes the reactivity of the two starting germacranolides to the acid catalysts, with a 4,15-diol acetonide being the main product obtained. The δ-amorphenolide obtained by intramolecular cyclization of this acetonide is a valuable intermediate for accessing the antimalarials artemisinin and its derivatives. Mechanistic proposals for the transformations are raised, and to provide support them, quantum chemical calculations [DFT B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level] were undertaken.

Flavonoids upregulate gene expression of PPAR-α and underregulate the gene expression of SREBP-1c, and their intake increases the plasmatic concentration of n-3 LC-PUFAs. However, the biological mechanisms underlying these effects have not been elucidated. In this work, the effect of oral supplementation of ALA from chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seed oil and anthocyanins from a purple corn extract (PCE) on gene expression of SREBP-1c, PPAR-α and Δ5 and Δ6 desaturases (Δ5D and Δ6D), the activity of these enzymes in the liver as well as the hepatic lipid profile were evaluated in thirty-six female Sprague Dawley rats whose diet was supplemented with olive oil (OL), chia oil (CH), olive oil and PCE (OL + PCE) or chia oil and PCE (CH + PCE). Gene expression of PPAR-α was significantly higher when supplemented with CH and CH + PCE, SREBP-1c gene expression was higher when supplemented with chia oil. CH supplementation enhanced Δ5D expression whereas no significant differences between treatments were observed concerning Δ6D gene expression. Activities of both desaturases were increased by including olive oil (OL + PCE and OL), and they were found to be higher in CH + PCE respect to CH for both enzymes. The ALA and n-3 LCPUFAs hepatic content was higher with CH, decreasing the levels of AA and n-6 LCPUFAs. It is concluded that the joint action of flavonoids such as anthocyanins and ALA show an anti-adipogenic effect. Desaturase activity was inhibited by ALA and kept by the anthocyanins from PCE, thus anthocyanins would exert a protective effect on the desaturase activity but they would not affect on its gene expression, however, high doses of ALA increased the production of its metabolites, masking the effect of PCE., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Agroforestry systems are environment-friendly production systems which help to preserve biodiversity while providing people with a way of earning a living. Cacao is a historically important crop in Venezuela that traditionally has been produced in agroforestry systems. However, few studies have evaluated how different trees used in those systems affect the dynamics and abundance of insects. The present study evaluated the entomofauna assemblages associated with different combinations of four timber-yielding trees and four Criollo cacao cultivars established in a lowland tropical ecosystem in Venezuela. A randomized block design with two replicates was used, each block having 16 plots which included all 16 possible combinations of four native timber trees ( Cordia thaisiana , Cedrela odorata , Swietenia macrophylla , and Tabebuia rosea ) and four Criollo cacao cultivars (Porcelana, Guasare, Lobatera and Criollo Merideño). Insects were collected with yellow pan traps and sorted to order. Coleoptera and parasitoid Hymenoptera were determined to the family level. In total, 49,538 individuals of seven orders were collected, with Hymenoptera, Diptera, and Hemiptera being the most abundant, although only Lepidoptera and Coleoptera abundances were significantly influenced by the timber tree species. Twenty-three families of parasitoid Hymenoptera and 26 of Coleoptera were found. Significant differences in insects’ assemblages were found both in parasitoid Hymenoptera and Coleoptera families associated to every shade tree, with the families Eulophidae and Lycidae being indicators for Cordia , and Chalcididae for Swietenia . The entomofauna relationship with the cacao cultivar was barely significant, although Scydmaenidae and Scarabaeidae were indicators for Lobatera and Merideño, respectively. No significant effects were found for interaction with cacao cultivars and native trees. We concluded that the particular insect assemblages found in Cedrela odorata and Cordia thaisiana , together with their high growing rates, make these two species an optimal choice for cacao agroforestry systems.

The rational design of quinones with specific redox properties is an issue of great interest because of their applications in pharmaceutical and material sciences. In this work, the electrochemical behavior of a series of four p -quinones was studied experimentally and theoretically. The first and second one-electron reduction potentials of the quinones were determined using cyclic voltammetry and correlated with those calculated by density functional theory (DFT) using three different functionals, BHandHLYP, M06-2x and PBE0. The differences among the experimental reduction potentials were explained in terms of structural effects on the stabilities of the formed species. DFT calculations accurately reproduced the first one-electron experimental reduction potentials with R ² higher than 0.94. The BHandHLYP functional presented the best fit to the experimental values ( R ² = 0.957), followed by M06-2x ( R ² = 0.947) and PBE0 ( R ² = 0.942).

For this work, a phenol solution model was treated by an advanced oxidation process (AOPs), using the heterogeneous catalyst TiO 2 /BiPO 4 and hydrogen peroxide combined with UVA for 240 min. An annular reactor containing a UVA lamp (80 W) was employed. A central composite rotacional design was developed employing a TiO 2 /BiPO 4 concentration of 87 mg L -1 and a hydrogen peroxide concentration of 1800 mg L -1 , being evaluated by the degradation percentage and phenol mineralization percentage as responses; 94.30 and 67.00 % were obtained for the phenol degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) conversion, respectively. The lumped kinetic model (LKM) was applied and a satisfactory profile of the residual fractions of the organic compounds present in the liquid phase as a time function with a determination coefficient (R 2  = 0.9945). The toxicity tests employing microbiological species indicated that the organisms tested for the evaluation of the toxic compounds present in the contaminated samples presented a practical low cost test, rapid execution, and high sensibility as an indicator of the presence of toxic substances in liquid effluents.

The solute carrier 15 family (Slc15), also called oligopeptide transporter family (Pept), was well-known for its role in the cellular uptake of di/tripeptides and peptide-like molecules. Our understanding of Slc15 family has already been enlarged since the rapid increasing of genome information; however, efforts are still expected to reveal the diversification of the family in an evolutionary manner. In the study, the sequence information were collected and analyzed through eleven eukaryotic organism representatives, especially in fish species. Gene expansion was observed through the evolution of the family. Further study was carried out with the representative species-Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Tissue expression profiles were compared among members of the Slc15 family. Generally, they were all highly expressed both in the intestine and stomach, however, different members possessed its special tissue expression pattern. The mRNA levels of all the members (except Slc15a4) decreased after fasting while refeeding could restore the expression level. The recovery ability was impaired after exposure to environmental relevant concentration of copper (Cu(2+), 160 nmol/L).
