Abstract: International audience; We describe the synthesis of two new dumbbell-shaped small molecules used as near ultraviolet absorbers for transparent organic solar cell application. The electron-donor TAT units, sandwiching the central chromophore, constitute very efficient π-stacking platforms that are nevertheless highly soluble thanks to the presence of three alkyl chains. The TAT units are used in combination, with a small central electron donor unit, either a carbazole or a thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT) unit. The two new dumbbell-shaped small molecules including only electron-donor units are strongly absorbing in the near UV range, due to the reduced electronic conjugation. Combined with a suitable hole mobility, the most conjugated thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based derivative, when used as electrondonor component in a bulk heterojunction organic solar cell, exhibits a 48% of average visible transmittance with a power conversion efficiency close to 2%.

Abstract: International audience; The precise bottom-up synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with controlled width and edge structures may compensate for graphene's limitations, such as the absence of an electronic bandgap. At the same time, GNRs maintain graphene's unique lattice structure in one dimension and provide more open-edge structures compared to graphene, thus allowing faster ion diffusion, which makes GNRs highly promising for energy storage systems. However, the current solution-synthesized GNRs suffer from severe aggregation due to the strong π–π interactions, which limits their potential applications. Thus, it is indispensable to develop a facile and scalable approach to exfoliate the GNRs from the postsynthetic aggregates, yielding individual nanoribbons. Here, a high-shear-mixing approach is demonstrated to untie the GNR bundles into practically individual GNRs, by introducing suitable molecular interactions. The micro-supercapacitor (MSC) electrode based on solution-processed GNR film exhibits an excellent volumetric capacitance of 355 F cm−3 and a high power density of 550 W cm−3, reaching the state-of-the-art performance of graphene and related carbon materials, and thus demonstrating the great potential of GNRs as electrode materials for future energy storage.

Abstract: Thermalization is the dynamical process by which a many-body system evolves toward a thermal equilibrium state that maximizes its entropy. In certain cases, however, the establishment of thermal equilibrium is significantly slowed down and a phenomenon of pre-thermalization can emerge. It describes the initial relaxation toward a quasi-steady state after a perturbation. While having similar properties to their thermal counterparts, pre-thermal states exhibit a partial memory of initial conditions. Here, we observe the dynamical formation of a pre-thermal state in a non-equilibrium, two-dimensional (2D) fluid of light after an interaction quench. Direct measurements of the fluid's first-order correlation function reveal the spontaneous emergence of long-range algebraic correlations spreading within a light-cone, providing a clear signature of a quasi steady-state strongly similar to a 2D thermal superfluid. Detailed experimental characterization of the algebraic order is presented and a partial memory of the initial conditions is demonstrated, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions. Furthermore, by a controlled increase of the fluid fluctuations, we unveil a cross-over from algebraic to short-range (exponential) correlations, analogous to the celebrated Kosterlitz-Thouless transition observed at thermal equilibrium. These results suggest the existence of non-equilibrium precursors for thermodynamic phase transitions.

Abstract: International audience; Rare-earth ions (REIs) are promising solid-state systems for building light-matter interfaces at the quantum level1,2. This relies on their potential to show narrow optical and spin homogeneous linewidths, or, equivalently, long-lived quantum states. This enables the use of REIs for photonic quantum technologies such as memories for light, optical-microwave transduction and computing3-5. However, so far, few crystalline materials have shown an environment quiet enough to fully exploit REI properties. This hinders further progress, in particular towards REI-containing integrated nanophotonics devices6,7. Molecular systems can provide such capability but generally lack spin states. If, however, molecular systems do have spin states, they show broad optical lines that severely limit optical-to-spin coherent interfacing8-10. Here we report on europium molecular crystals that exhibit linewidths in the tens of kilohertz range, orders of magnitude narrower than those of other molecular systems. We harness this property to demonstrate efficient optical spin initialization, coherent storage of light using an atomic frequency comb, and optical control of ion-ion interactions towards implementation of quantum gates. These results illustrate the utility of rare-earth molecular crystals as a new platform for photonic quantum technologies that combines highly coherent emitters with the unmatched versatility in composition, structure and integration capability of molecular materials.

Abstract: International audience; The reliable generation of hydrogel foams remains a challenge in a wide range of sectors, including food, cosmetic, agricultural, and medical applications. Using the example of calcium alginate foams, we introduce a novel foam generation method that uses CO2 for the simultaneous foaming and pH reduction of the alginate solution to trigger gelation. We show that gelled foams of different gas fractions can be generated in a simple one-step process. We macroscopically follow the acidification using a pH-responsive indicator and investigate the role of CO2 in foam ageing via foam stability measurements. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of interfacial rheology to provide evidence for the gelation process initiated by the dissolution of the CO2 from the dispersed phase. Both approaches, gas-initiated gelation and interfacial rheology for its characterization, can be readily transferred to other types of gases and formulations.

Abstract: International audience; The unprecedented use of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) for the ionothermal synthesis of Ca(II) based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been explored. The 1 : 2 choline chloride : e-urea DES (e-urea = 2-imidazolidinone, ethylene urea) has been successfully employed for the preparation of Ca-MOFs with a series of dicarboxylic acid ligands. These materials have been structurally characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques as well as by thermo-gravimetric analysis and infrared, UV-visible and emission spectroscopy techniques in the crystalline state. The MOFs obtained have been found to be three-dimensional with the presence of channels occupied by coordinated e-urea solvent molecules. While the latter solvent acts as a bridging ligand in the case of terephthalate and isophthalate based MOFs, it behaves as a terminal ligand in the MOFs isolated with 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (dobdcH22−). With this ligand, two phases differing in the coordination mode of the dobdcH22− anion have been obtained. Interestingly, for one of them formulated as [Ca(dobdcH2)(e-urea)2], the crystals rapidly lost their transparency and luster upon exposure to air. This phenomenon could be rationalized by X-ray diffraction to result from the uptake of water molecules from the ambient atmosphere leading to the replacement of one e-urea molecule by H2O in the Ca(II) cation coordination sphere. These results demonstrate that the 1 : 2 choline chloride : e-urea DES can be considered as an effective solvent for the synthesis of water-sensitive Ca-MOFs.

Abstract: To advance the widespread implementation of electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies, the development of inexpensive electrocatalysts is imperative. In this context, Fe/N/C-materials represent a promising alternative to the costly noble metals currently used to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and also display encouraging activities for the reduction of CO2. Nevertheless, the application of these materials in commercial devices requires further improvements in their performance and stability that are currently hindered by a lack of understanding of the nature of their active sites and the associated catalytic mechanisms. With this motivation, herein the authors exploit the high sensitivity of modulation excitation X-ray absorption spectroscopy toward species undergoing potential-induced changes to elucidate the operando local geometry of the active sites in two sorts of Fe/N/C-catalysts. While the ligand environment of a part of both materials' sites appears to change from six-/five- to fourfold coordination upon potential decrease, they differ substantially when it comes to the geometry of the coordination sphere, with the more ORR-active material undergoing more pronounced restructuring. Furthermore, these time-resolved spectroscopic measurements yield unprecedented insights into the kinetics of Fe-based molecular sites' structural reorganization, identifying the oxidation of iron as a rate-limiting process for the less ORR-active catalyst., Advanced Energy Materials, 12 (14)

Abstract: International audience; Formation and coalescence of solvent droplets on a thread of polymer solution at the final stage of capillary pinching is studied theoretically. It is considered that macromolecules are already almost completely stretched along the extension axis and their contour length exceeds the diameter of the thread. In this regime, the radius of polymer string decreases slowly with time under the action of capillary forces and the solvent squeezes out to the thread surface forming annular droplets of different sizes. The thinning process stops when the capillary pressure is balanced by the osmotic pressure of the polymer. As a result, a quasistationary two-phase structure of polydisperse solvent droplets on a polymer string is formed. We develop a rigorous theory showing that the polymer core is swollen in the droplet regions but still remains much thinner than the solvent phase. We also demonstrate that such a blistering structure is unstable with respect to droplet coalescence and elucidate two mechanisms of this process due to the solvent flow between the droplets and due to diffusion of solvent droplets along the polymer string. Both mechanisms lead to the same long-time power law (t1/7) for the droplet radius. It is shown that a breakage of the polymer string may occur at time scales exceeding the Rouse time of polymer chains.

Abstract: International audience; Background: fiber diameter is one of the most important morphological parameters which drives the applications of microfibers. This creates a need for the development of processes capable of producing a large variety of microfibers with a given diameter. To this regards, microfluidic spinning has recently emerged as an outstanding and simple technique for the production of micro- and nanofibers with controllable size and morphology.Methods: herein, microfibers were produced from (macro)monomers or prepolymers (core phase) by in situ photoirradiation using a capillary-based microfluidic device and a miscible sheath phase of various viscosity. The effects of the flow rate of both phases as well as the viscosity of the sheath fluid, the capillary dimensions and the monomer volume fraction in the core phase were thoroughly studied.Significant findings: by calculating the capillary number ratio from the ratios of sheath to core flow rate and viscosity, an empirical relationship which perfectly predicts the microfiber diameter as a function of monomer volume fraction, the capillary number ratio and capillary inner diameter but independent of its outer diameter is extracted. This result paves the way to the continuous-flow production of microfibers with well-controlled morphological characteristics

Abstract: Polyethylene glycol-modified terphenyl tetracarboxylic ligands were used for the preparation of copper-based MOFs: SUM-102 and SUM-103. The influence of side chains on the stability and adsorption capacities was investigated. Compared to the simpler analogue-NOTT-101, these MOFs, in particular SUM-103, exhibit high stability in water. Also, side chains do not affect the thermostability. The extraction capacity of organic cationic and anionic dyes was demonstrated by adsorption experiments carried out in water. SUM-103 showed a high Langmuir adsorption capacity of methylene blue in an aqueous solution (194 ± 4 mg g−1 at 30 °C).

Abstract: International audience; Combining side chain engineering and controlled alignment of PBTTT is an effective strategy to produce oriented thin films with improved thermoelectric performances when doped sequentially with the acceptor molecule F 6 TCNNQ. The substitution of linear alkyl side-chains (n-C 12) with a chain of identical length including an ether function (n-C 7 OC 4) leads to a new class of slightly polar PBTTT polymers, preserving the ease of synthesis and air stability of alkylated PBTTTs. This sidechain modification improves the structural order of PBTTT backbones and the thermomechanical properties of the polymer. It then can be oriented by high temperature rubbing up to 240°C to reach very high dichroic ratios up to 20 thanks to enhanced cohesive forces within side-chain layers. The side chain polarity of n-C7OC4 helps to tune the polymer-dopant interactions. A multi-technique approach demonstrates that F6TCNNQ dopants are randomly oriented in the disordered side chain layers of n-C7OC4 with some evidence of dopant clustering. The combination of improved alignment and random orientation of intercalated F6TCNNQ dopants helps reach a very high charge conductivity o = 5.104 S/cm and a record power factors PF = 2.9 mWm-1K-2 in the polymer chain direction.

Abstract: International audience; The spatiotemporal correlations of the local stress tensor in supercooled liquids are studied both theoretically and by molecular dynamics simulations of a two-dimensional (2D) polydisperse Lennard-Jones system. Asymptotically exact theoretical equations defining the dynamical structure factor and all components of the stress correlation tensor for low wave-vector q are presented in terms of the generalized ( q-dependent) shear and longitudinal relaxation moduli, G( q, t) and K( q, t). We developed a rigorous approach (valid for low q) to calculate K( q, t) in terms of certain bulk correlation functions (for q = 0), the static structure factor S( q), and thermal conductivity κ. The proposed approach takes into account both the thermostatting effect and the effect of polydispersity. The theoretical results for the ( q, t)-dependent stress correlation functions are compared with our simulation data, and an excellent agreement is found for [Formula: see text] (with [Formula: see text] being the mean particle diameter) both above and below the glass transition without any fitting parameters. Our data are consistent with recently predicted (both theoretically and by simulations) long-range correlations of the shear stress quenched in heterogeneous glassy structures.

Abstract: International audience; Chirality describes the geometric property of an object that is not superimposable on its mirror image and has been a pivotal concept in chemistry and biology since the 19th century. Chiral plasmonics has attracted increasing attention over the past years as modern nanofabrication techniques and soft-chemistry synthesis and assembly approaches have allowed the preparation of complex and well-controlled chiral metallic nanostructures with promising applications in fields such as molecular sensing and chiral separation and synthesis, or as optical polarizing elements. This review covers the main techniques employed to construct chiral plasmonic materials, in particular using soft-chemistry approaches, and discusses some applications of these nanostructures on the basis of recent examples drawn from the literature.

Abstract: International audience; Tunable physicochemical properties combined with the high chemical and thermal stabilities of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) make them ideal candidates for the next generation of energy storage systems. The integration of redox-active moieties (e.g., thiols) in COFs imparts them a pseudocapacitive characteristic and represents an efficient strategy to boost their performance as electrochemical supercapacitors (SCs). We report the synthesis of two thiol-decorated COFs (SH-COF-1 and SH-COF-2) via the condensation between 2,5-diaminobenzene-1,4-dithiol (DABDT) and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxaldehyde (TBA), or 1,2,4,5-tetrakis-(4-formylphenyl)benzene (TFPB), respectively. SH-COF-1, which possesses a higher number of thiol groups per structural repeat unit compared to SH-COF-2, exhibits a higher surface area (227 m2 g−1) and enhanced electrochemical performance (areal capacitance of 118 mF cm−2 and a capacitance retention >95% after 1000 cycles), being superior to previously reported COFs missing redox-active units in their scaffolds. Moreover, to demonstrate the multifunctionality resulting from the presence of thiol groups, AuNPs were in situ grown using SH-COFs as templates. By taking advantage of the strength of the bonding between the AuNPs and the SH-COFs, Au-SH-COF hybrids were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP), showing an excellent catalytic activity kobs, of 1.01 min−1 and 0.71 min−1 for Au-SH-COF-1 and Au-SH-COF-2, respectively, and long-term performance (4-NP to 4-AP conversion above 95% after 10 catalytic cycles). This work highlights the importance of COFs' molecular design towards the development of highly efficient (multi)functional materials.

Abstract: International audience; We report on investigations into the rheological properties of organogels prepared from triarylamine trisamide (TATA) and oligo phenylene vinylene (OPVOH) molecules in binary organogel gels and in ternary thermoreversible networks with poly vinyl chloride (PVC). In the case of OPVOH, we show that the modulus of the ternary gel is simply the sum of the modulus of each binary gel, corresponding to the so-called Voigt upper limit. In contrast, TATA/PVC ternary gels generally exceed the Voigt upper limit. In an attempt to account for this unexpected outcome, we hypothesized that a de-solvation process might occur in the PVC fibrils that possibly originates in the propensity of TATA molecules to form molecular compounds with the solvent. Finally, the conducting properties of TATA/solvent organogels and TAT/PVC/solvent reversible networks were measured. It was found that they strongly depend on the solvent type but are not significantly altered when PVC is present. Therefore, PVC gels can be made conducive by incorporating TATA fibers.

Abstract: International audience; In the search for efficient building blocks for nonlinear metamaterials, plasmonic nanoparticles have received considerable attention. Their quadratic nonlinear optical properties result from a complex interplay between the nature of the bulk material, the object shape, surface defects and retardation effects. This versatility can be used to tailor the properties of the resulting material. However, despite extensive investigation, separating and controlling these contributions is still a challenge. In this report, we control the morphology ofexplore the second harmonic scattering response from colloidal gold nanoparticles with tetrahedral symmetry and explore their second harmonic scattering response. The material itself is centrosymmetric but not the shape, conferring to the first hyperpolarizability an almost purely octupolar symmetry. Gradually reshaping the nanoparticles into spheres (and thus decreasing their asymmetry) reduces their nonlinear response, showing that it is is controlled by the morphology.

Abstract: International audience; The oxidation of porous Ni-yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Ni-gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) ceramic-metal (cermet) electrodes in H2O and CO2 atmospheres was studied by near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS). We show that the oxidation of nickel by the two gases is not similar, as is commonly believed, but it depends on the ceramic type. Nickel is vulnerable to oxidation in H2O but it resists to CO2 in Ni-GDC, as compared to the Ni-YSZ electrode. Inspired by this observation we conceptualize and fabricate Ni-YSZ electrodes modified by ceria nanoparticles, which show significantly higher resistance to CO2 oxidation as compared with conventional Ni-YSZ electrodes. The preparation of tailor-made cermet electrodes with identical bulk/mechanical characteristics but very different surface properties offers a promising fabrication strategy for high-performance and durability solid oxide electrolysis cells for CO2 conversion.

Abstract: Strong coupling provides a powerful way to modify the nonlinear optical properties of materials. The coupling strength of the state-of-the-art strongly coupled systems is restricted by a weak-field confinement of the cavity, which limits the enhancement of the optical nonlinearity. Here, we investigate a strong coupling between Mie resonant modes of high-index dielectric nanocavities and an epsilon-near-zero mode of an ultrathin indium tin oxide film and obtain an anticrossing splitting of 220 meV. Static nonlinear optical measurements reveal a large enhancement in the intensity-independent effective optical nonlinear coefficients, reaching more than 3 orders of magnitude at the coupled resonance. In addition, we observe a transient response of ∼300 fs for the coupled system. The ultrafast and large optical nonlinear coefficients presented here offer a new route towards strong coupling-assisted high-speed photonics.

Abstract: International audience; The world has been facing a major resources crisis for few decades. In order to tackle with such environmental issues, new solutions have to be found in order to replace fossil resources by more sustainable, biobased resources. One of the most promising biobased resources are vegetable oils which are used as building blocks for renewable polymers synthesis. Industrial productions and the corresponding chemical structures make oleo-chemistry very attractive. Nevertheless, such building blocks have to compete with usual petrol-based monomers. Hence, this work focuses on the development of new foams in order to replace toxic isocyanate-based polyurethanes foams. Different efficient soft foams were obtained for the first time by Aza Michael reactions, using acrylated soybean oils and biobased amines, with an original chemical blowing system. Properties of the foams have been studied in order to determine the influence of the different structures in terms of morphologies, glass transition, hardness or deformation…. Homogeneous open cells foams with a pore size from 0.1 to 0.5 mm were obtained. Flexible foams were obtained with glass transition form-20 °C to-7 °C. These soft foams demonstrated a time recovery about few seconds and exhibited similar properties to equivalent commercial fossil-polyurethane foams, without the use of highly toxic chemicals.

Abstract: International audience; Here we describe that HFIP greatly expands the scope with respect to both reaction partners of the Brønsted acid-catalyzed hydroarylation of enamides. The reaction is fast and practical and can be performed on the gram scale. A hexafluoroisopropyl ether intermediate was isolated from the reaction mixture and was shown to convert to the product when resubmitted to the reaction conditions. Extensive kinetic studies and computations reveal that the hexafluoroisopropyl ether is formed rapidly and serves as a slow-release reservoir for the key cationic intermediate, preventing the oligomerization of the substrate under the reaction conditions. Given the relatively low electrophilicity of the cationic intermediates in the present study, it seems likely that HFIP also actively participates in other reactions involving more electrophilic carbocations.

Abstract: International audience; Focusing on non-ergodic macroscopic systems we reconsider the variances δO 2 of time averages O[x] of time-series x. The total variance δO 2 tot = δO 2 int + δO 2 ext (direct average over all time-series) is known to be the sum of an internal variance δO 2 int (fluctuations within the meta-basins) and an external variance δO 2 ext (fluctuations between meta-basins). It is shown that whenever O[x] can be expressed as a volume average of a local field Or the three variances can be written as volume averages of correlation functions Ctot(r), Cint(r) and Cext(r) with Ctot(r) = Cint(r) + Cext(r). The dependences of the δO 2 on the sampling time ∆τ and the system volume V can thus be traced back to Cint(r) and Cext(r). Various relations are illustrated using lattice spring models with spatially correlated spring constants.

Abstract: International audience; Kemp's triacid (H3kta; cis,cis-1,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid) has been used to synthesize three lead(II) complexes under solvo-hydrothermal conditions. [Pb$_3$(kta)Cl$_3$] (1) and [Pb$_3$(H$_3$kta)(kta)$_2$] (2) are both diperiodic coordination polymers displaying hydrophobic surfaces with protruding methyl groups, complex 2 being isomorphous with an Sr$^{II}$ complex previously reported. In contrast, [Pb(Hkta)(phen)] (3), where phen is 1,10-phenanthroline, is a monoperiodic, helical coordination polymer. In all cases, Pb$^{II}$ cations are in seven-or eight-coordinate environments of predominantly hemidirected nature. The possible effects of the Pb$^{II}$ valence shell lone pair are discussed in terms of coordination geometry and Pb...H weak interactions as revealed on Hirshfeld surfaces. Only in complex 1 is a short Pb...H contact at 2.84 Å possibly indicative of appreciable basicity of the metal ion. All three complexes show similar weak luminescence, apparently independent of the nature of the ligands.

Abstract: International audience; The sustainable production of environmentally-friendly alternative fuels from renewable resources is one of the worldwide high-prospect strategies for future biorefinery schemes. 2methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) that can be obtained from renewable sources such as lignocellulosic biomass is considered as an ideal green fuel competitive to benchmarks products due to high-value properties like high energy density. In our work we showed that bimetallic Ni-Co/g-Al2O3 catalysts with an appropriate amount of Ni are worth robust, reusable and cheap earth-abundant non-noble metals-based catalysts enabling the high yield production of 2-MTHF. The factors allowing the activity to be strongly boosted compared to the monometallic counterparts while keeping a high selectivity to the targeted 2-MTHF product were identified and discussed. Among the key factors we identified the role of the Ni-Co interaction allowing the Ni availability at the surface of the catalyst to be enhanced. Additionally, the surface acidity was recognized as another important factor. Silica supported catalysts were selective towards the 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PDO) intermediate obtained by GVL dehydration, while more acidic g-Al2O3 was pushing the reaction further towards 2-MTHF. The synthesis parameters were optimized in terms of reduction temperature (500°C) and Ni:Co ratio (1:4) on the most active g-Al2O3 supported catalyst.

Abstract: International audience; To enable the programmable thermoresponsive transport of anions between two phases, multifunctional hyperbranched polymer ionic liquids (hyperPILs) exhibiting micelle-inspired architectures are tailored as molecular shuttles. These polyelectrolytes consist of a hyperbranched poly(3-ethyl-3-hydroxymethyloxetane) (PEHO) core, an inner polyionic imidazolium (Im+) and an outer thermoresponsive polyoxazoline (POx) shell, which exhibits lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior in aqueous medium. Key step of the hyperPIL synthesis is the efficient chain termination of the cationic ring-opening 2-oxazoline polymerization by addition of polyfunctional imidazole-terminated PEHO. The resulting covalent attachment of the LCST-polyoxazoline shell renders hyperPIL polyelectrolytes thermoresponsive. As a function of the polyoxazoline chain length and the oxazoline monomer type, the hyperPIL cloud points (TCP) vary over a wide temperature range. The inner imidazolium shell enables the immobilization and transport of various anionically charged organic and inorganic payloads via anion exchange. Due to the thermal switching of the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity balance, hyperPILs function as programmable molecular shuttles for anionic payloads transported back and forth between the phases of ethyl acetate and water. Thus, switchable hyperPILs qualify for manifold potential applications like catalytic processes with facile recycling of homogeneous catalysts via phase transfer.

Abstract: Vibrational strong coupling (VSC) is currently emerging as a tool to control chemical dynamics. Here we study the impact of strong coupling strength, given by the Rabi splitting energy (ħΩR), on the thermodynamic parameters associated with the transition state of the desilylation reaction of the model molecule 1-phenyl-2-trimethylsilylacetylene. Under VSC, the enthalpy and entropy of activation determined from the temperature-dependent kinetic studies varied nonlinearly with the coupling strength. The thermodynamic parameters of the noncavity reaction did not show noticeable variation, ruling out concentration effects other than the enhanced ħΩR for the changes observed under VSC. The difference between the total free energy change under VSC and in noncavity was relatively smaller possibly because the enthalpy and entropy of activation compensate each other. This thermodynamic study gives more insight into the role of collective strong coupling on the transition state that leads to modified dynamics and branching ratios.

Abstract: Inspired from biology, one current goal in supramolecular chemistry is to control the emergence of new functionalities arising from self-assembly of molecules. In particular, some peptides can self-assemble and lead to exceptional catalytically-active fibrous networks able to underpin hydrogels. Unfortunately, the mechanical fragility of these materials is incompatible with process developments relaying this exciting field to academic curiosity. Here, we show that this drawback can be circumvented using enzyme-assisted self-assembly of peptides initiated at the walls of a supporting porous material. We apply this strategy to grow an esterase-like catalytically-active supramolecular hydrogel (CASH) in an open-cell polymer foam, filling the whole interior space of it. Our so-supported-CASH is highly efficient toward inactivated esters and shows kinetic resolution of racemates. Abstract: The rippled sheet structure is a remarkable insight due to Pauling and Corey, that supplements the pleated sheet structure of homochiral proteins introduced in 1951. Whereas the pleated sheet was immediately adopted by the scientific community, the rippled sheet has remained more confidential since it applies only to blends of poly(L-peptides) and poly(D-peptides). The present account tells the intimate but patchy relationship developed by the author with the rippled sheet. In the 1970s, twenty years after Pauling and Corey's proposal, the rippled sheet was recognized as a valid model for the sheet structure of the achiral polyglycine, polyglycine I, which helped improve the structure of Bombyx mori silk fibroin. Very recently, pleated and rippled sheets were found to account for unsolved crystal structures of a variety of nylons. These structures help to explain a mysterious high temperature "Brill transition" first reported in nylon 6-6 by Brill in 1942.

Abstract: We propose to use a correlated noise bath to drive an optically trapped Brownian particle that mimics active biological matter. Thanks to the flexibility and precision of our setup, we are able to control the different parameters that drive the stochastic motion of the particle with unprecedented accuracy, thus reaching strongly correlated regimes that are not easily accessible with real active matter. In particular, by using the correlation time (i.e., the "color") of the noise as a control parameter, we can trigger transitions between two non-equilibrium steady states with no expended work, but only a calorific cost. Remarkably, the measured heat production is directly proportional to the spectral entropy of the correlated noise, in a fashion that is reminiscent of Landauer's principle. Abstract: International audience; Benzene-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid (123btcH$_3$) was used to synthesize 7 uranyl ion complexes under hydrosolvothermal conditions, in the presence of different structure-directing agents. [Zn(phen)$_3$][Zn$_2$(123btc)(phen)$_4$][(UO$_2$)2(123btc)$_2$(OH)(CH$_3$CN)]$^\cdot$3H$_2$O (1, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), the only discrete species in the series, crystallizes as a binuclear, cup-shaped dimer. Both [PP$_3$Me][UO$_2$(123btc)] (2) and [C(NH$_2$)$_3$][UO$_2$(123btc)]$^\cdot$0.5H$_2$O (3) contain anionic, monoperiodic coordination polymers based on quasi-planar, binuclear (UO$_2$)$_2$(123btc)$_2$$^{2-}$subunits in which two oxygen atoms of each ligand are uncoordinated. Similar chains are found in [UO$_2$(123btc)K(18C6)]$^\cdot$H$_2$O (4, 18C6 = 18-crown-6), the potassium cations being decorating groups bound to carboxylato and uranyl oxo donors. An analogous decorating role to monoperiodic polymers is played by UO$_2$(DMF)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$$^{2+}$ cations in [(UO$_2$)$_3$(123btc)$_2$(DMF)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$] (5), while bridging of chains by UO$_2$(NMP)$_3$$^{2+}$ cations in [(UO$-2$)$-3$(123btc)$-2$(NMP)$-3$] (6) yields a diperiodic network with V$_2$O$_5$ topology. [NH$_4$][UO$_2$(123btc)] (7), which does not contain the dimeric subunit found in the other cases, crystallizes as a diperiodic network with sql topology, the layers being associated through hydrogen bonding interactions with the ammonium counterions.

Abstract: International audience; Gold-catalyzed CO oxidation is a reaction of both practical and fundamental interest. In particular, ratedetermining oxygen activation pathways have attracted a lot of attention. They have been found to depend on the surface chemistry of the catalyst support, titania providing the most active catalysts and carbon nitride leading to inactive catalysts. Here we show that C 3 N 4-TiO 2 composites with rather similar surface chemistries can be engineered by using titania nanotubes as hard templates and by performing the polycondensation of melamine and dicyandiamide in air and in ammonia. By varying the C 3 N 4 content from 2 to 75wt.%, the mesoporosity can be tuned from 8 nm to 40 nm. A systematic study of CO oxidation turnover numbers in the absence and in the presence of hydrogen over the composites loaded with well-calibrated, 2-4 nm gold nanoparticles clearly shows that (1) the chemical composition of the support surface has much less impact on PROX than on dry CO oxidation (2) NH 2-terminated supports are as active as OH-terminated supports in PROX (3) hydrogen/water-mediated CO oxidation pathways are active on C 3 N 4-based Au catalysts, (4) PROX activity requires a rather large porosity (40 nm), which suggests the involvement of much larger intermediates than the usually postulated peroxo-type species.

Abstract: International audience; Organic photovoltaics has many advantages over other photovoltaic technologies to become a major player in sustainable electricity production worldwide. The specificities of organic photovoltaics are presented as well as the operating principles of this technology, from the materials used to the devices. The state of the art and the obstacles to be overcome in order for this technology of the future to reach full maturity are also discussed.; Le photovoltaïque organique présente de nombreux avantages par rapport aux autres technologies photovoltaïques pour devenir un acteur majeur de la production durable d’électricité partout dans le monde. Abstract: Ni-yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Ni-gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) are the SoA cathode electrodes for SOEC operating under H2O, CO2 and CO2/H2O fuels. However, they are still facing degradation issues and low activation/conversion efficiency issues. Degradation can be categorized into irreversible and reversible effects. The former is related to the mechanical stability of the SOEC device such as loss of the TPB, delamination, and microstructural changes etc., which can be easily demonstrated by post-mortem analysis of the SOEC devices. Reversible phenomena, such as electrode oxidation, and reversible pollution (especially carbon) etc., are dynamic and depend very much on the operational conditions. Therefore, operando characterization technologies are required to understand the exact degradation mechanism to eradicate the degradation issues. In terms of low conversion efficiency issues, despite the fact that Ni/YSZ is promising as SOEC cathode electrocatalyst due to its low cost and good mechanical strength, it exhibits high overpotential losses and poor durability both in single cell and stacks studies. In response to these problems, modification/decoration of present Ni/YSZ material is continuously being proposed as a main direction for CO2 electrolysis in SOECs. The principal objective of this work is to understand the electrode oxidation, which is believed to be one of the main caused for reversible degradation. This will be done through investigating the surface chemistry of two nickel-based cathode electrodes, Ni/GDC and Ni/YSZ, under SOEC feed gases and the effect of the electrode surface state in the electrocatalytic performance using near ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS). Finally, based on the above research, our goal is to develop a more robust and active solid oxide electrode for SOC applications via modification/decoration of SoA Ni/YSZ., Les matériaux à base de Ni et zircone stabilisée à l’oxyde d’yttrium (YSZ) ou d'oxyde de cérium dopé au gadolinium (GDC) sont les électrodes cathodiques de référence pour les SOEC fonctionnant avec des combustibles comme H2O, CO2 et CO2/H2O. Cependant, elles sont toujours confrontées à des problèmes de dégradation et de faible efficacité d'activation/conversion. Les dégradations peuvent être classées en effets irréversibles et réversibles. Les premiers sont liés à la stabilité mécanique du dispositif SOEC, comme la perte du TPB, la délamination, les changements microstructuraux, etc. qui peuvent être facilement démontrés par l'analyse post-mortem des dispositifs SOEC. Les phénomènes réversibles, tels que l'oxydation des électrodes et la pollution réversible (en particulier le carbone), sont quant à eux dynamiques et dépendent fortement des conditions opérationnelles. Par conséquent, les technologies de caractérisation en conditions opératoires sont nécessaires pour comprendre les mécanismes de dégradation exacts et envisager leur éradication. En ce qui concerne les problèmes de faible activité, malgré le fait que le Ni/YSZ soit prometteur comme électrocatalyseur de cathode SOEC en raison de son faible coût et de sa bonne résistance mécanique, il présente néanmoins des pertes de surtension élevées ainsi qu’une faible durabilité dans les études de cellules individuelles et de piles. En réponse à ces problèmes, la modification/décoration du matériau Ni/YSZ actuel est continuellement proposée comme solution principale pour l'électrolyse du CO2 dans les SOECs. L'objectif principal de ce travail est de comprendre l'oxydation de l'électrode, qui est considérée comme l'une des principales causes de dégradation réversible du matériau. Pour ce faire, nous étudierons la chimie de surface de deux électrodes cathodiques à base de nickel, Ni/GDC et Ni/YSZ, sous gaz d'alimentation SOEC et l'effet de l'état de surface de l'électrode sur leurs performances électrocatalytiques en utilisant la spectroscopie photoélectronique à rayons X à pression quasi ambiante (NAP-XPS). Enfin, sur la base des recherches ci-dessus, notre objectif est de développer une électrode à oxyde solide plus robuste et plus active pour les applications en SOC via la modification/décoration du matériau Ni/YSZ de référence.

Abstract: The evolution in energy consumption has led to negative repercussions on the quality of life of living beings and on the atmosphere of our planet, which has pushed the world to seek solutions based on H2 as energy vector. In this context, this thesis presents works aiming at developing TiO2 and graphene (FLG, Few Layer Graphene)-based composites, by a simple and green process. The efficiency of these composites has been studied by the production of H2 by photoreforming of methanol under artificial sunlight. The best activities are provided by composites with low FLG (FLG’) content: 1.0 and (0.5) wt% which are 2 to 3 times more efficient than the reference and commercial TiO2. The remarkable activity of these photocatalysts is attributed to higher specific surface area, better photogenerated charge separation due to high charge transport properties on the graphene sheets that formed a good interface with the TiO2 nanoparticles, but also to additional visible light absorption properties by FLG, charge carrier generation and defect/functionalization enhancement of the graphene sheet edges. The best samples were studied in biomass transformation by comparing three processes: photocatalysis, hydrothermal and the coupled process. We have shown that the coupled process is an efficient way to produce products of high energy value. Moreover, FLG is a material of choice to achieve interesting photocatalytic activities for H2 production and glucose conversion, while minimizing the amount of noble metal., L’évolution fulgurante du niveau de la consommation énergétique a entraîné des répercussions négatives sur la qualité de vie de l’être humain et sur l’atmosphère de notre chère planète bleue, chose qui a poussé le monde à chercher des solutions urgentes de vecteur d’énergie comme H2. Dans ce cadre, cette thèse présente des travaux visant à développer des composites à base de TiO2/graphène principalement FLG (Few Layer Graphene), par un procédé simple et vert. L’efficacité de ces composites a été étudiée vis-à-vis de la production de H2 par photo-reformage du méthanol sous lumière solaire artificielle. Les meilleures activités sont fournies par les composites avec une faible teneur en FLG (FLG’): 1,0 et (0,5) wt%, qui sont 2 à 3 fois plus efficaces que les TiO2 de référence et commerciaux. Leur activité remarquable est attribuée à une surface spécifique plus élevée, à une meilleure séparation des charges photogénérées, grâce au transport de charges accrue sur les feuillets de graphène qui forment une interface de qualité avec les nanoparticules de TiO2, mais également à des propriétés supplémentaires d'absorption de la lumière visible par FLG, à la génération de porteurs de charges et à l’amélioration des défauts/fonctionnalisation des bords des feuillets de graphène. Les meilleurs échantillons ont été étudiés pour la transformation de la biomasse en comparant trois procédés : photocatalyse, hydrothermal et leur couplage. Nous avons montré que le procédé couplé est une voie efficace pour la production de produits d’une valeur énergétique recherchée. De plus, le FLG est un matériau de choix qui permet d’atteindre des activités photocatalytiques intéressantes pour la production de H2 et pour la conversion du glucose, tout en minimisant la quantité de métal noble.

Abstract: Interaction of a self-propelling artificial or biological entity, with cell membrane plays a crucial role in governing various important processes like microbial infections, drug delivery, and nanomaterial toxicity. In this thesis, the behaviour of self-propelling artificial Janus colloids in- and out-of thermal equilibrium conditions on encountering a Giant Unilamellar Vesicle was investigated. Also, the interaction dynamics for Janus colloids in active and passive conditions were observed by utilizing spontaneous and force driven interactions conditions. Centrifugations and Optical tweezer methods were employed to achieve activated engulfment which helped in gaining a deeper understanding on the factors that govern engulfment of a spherical colloid by GUV.The rotation and translation diffusion for a Brownian Janus colloid near a single solid boundary as well as in spontaneous interaction with a GUV were investigated and the results were found in tune with the previous theoretical prediction. A striking orbital motion was observed when an active Janus colloid encountered a GUV in its path. Activated engulfment of spherical Janus/bare colloids, triggered by external force showed a severe confinement effect and significant slowing down in the rotational and translational diffusion of the colloids. The activity of a Janus colloid was also found to be severely hampered in engulfed conditions., L'interaction d'une entité artificielle ou biologique autopropulsée avec la membrane cellulaire joue un rôle crucial dans la gestion de divers processus importants tels que les infections microbiennes, l'administration de médicaments et la toxicité des nanomatériaux Dans cette thèse, le comportement des colloïdes artificiels autopropulsés de Janus dans et hors des conditions d'équilibre thermique lors de la rencontre avec une colloïdes de Janus a été observée en utilisant des conditions d'interactions spontanées et forcées. Des centrifugations et des méthodes de pinces optiques ont été utilisées pour obtenir un engloutissement activé, ce qui a permis de mieux comprendre les facteurs qui régissent l'engloutissement d'un colloïde sphérique par une GUV.La diffusion de la rotation et de la translation pour un colloïde brownien de Janus près d'une surface a solide unique ainsi que dans l'interaction spontanée avec un GUV a été étudiée et les résultats se sont avérés en accord avec les prédictions théorique. Un mouvement orbital a été observé lorsqu'un colloïde de Janus actif rencontre un GUV sur son chemin. L'engloutissement activé de colloïdes de Janus sphériques ou nus, déclenché par une force externe, a montré un effet de confinement important et un ralentissement significatif de la diffusion rotationnelle et translationnelle des colloïdes. L'activité d'un colloïde de Janus est également sévèrement entravée dans des conditions d'engloutissement.

Abstract: Organic–inorganic xerogel networks were synthesized from bacterial poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) for potential biomedical applications. Since silane-based networks usually demonstrate increased biocompatibility and mechanical properties, siloxane groups have been added onto polyurethane (PU) architectures. In this work, a diol oligomer (oligoPHB-diol) was first prepared from bacterial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) with an environmentally friendly method. Then, hexamethylene diisocyanate or biobased dimeryl diisocyanate was used as diisocyanate to react with the short oligoPHB-diol for the synthesis of different NCO-terminated PU systems in a bulk process and without catalyst. Various PU systems containing increasing NCO/OH molar ratios were prepared. Siloxane precursors were then obtained after reaction of the NCO-terminated PUs with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane, resulting in silane-terminated polymers. These structures were confirmed by different analytical techniques. Finally, four series of xerogels were prepared via a sol–gel process from the siloxane precursors, and their properties were evaluated depending on varying parameters such as the inorganic network crosslinking density. The final xerogels exhibited adequate properties in connection with biomedical applications such as a high in vitro degradation up to 15 wt% after 12 weeks.

Abstract: International audience; The structure of catalyst containing Ni nanoparticles (NPs) supported over carbon nanofibers/few layer graphene (CNFs/FLG) was tailored via modification of chemical vapor deposition parameters in view of methanation of CO 2 under induction heating mode (IH). High edges-to-graphitic plane ratio in the support achieved due to the specific herringbone morphology of CNFs allowed to get high CO 2 conversion of 85% at relatively low temperature (360°C) at very low Ni loading of only 10%. A design of catalyst included also the use of FLG known for high temperature conductivity and by occasion serving as a support to grow CNFs. The performances of certain catalysts are also tested under "standard" Joule heating in order to check the role of the magnetic and conductive carbon support. The morphology, chemical composition and SAR measurements of the catalysts and carbon supports themselves are addressed and their structure-catalytic performances are discussed.

Abstract: Isobutanal is a high value bulk material that, in principle, could be produced with 100 % atom-economy by isoselective hydroformylation of propylene with syngas. However, leading industrial Rh- and Co-catalyzed hydroformylation methods preferentially form n-butanal over the iso-product, and methods offering isoselectivity remain underdeveloped. Here we report an iodide-assisted Pd-catalyzed hydroformylation of propylene that produces isobutanal with unprecedented levels of selectivity. The method involves PdI2 , simple alkyl monophosphines, such as tricyclohexylphosphine, and common green solvents, enabling the title reaction to occur with isoselectivity in up to 50 : 1 iso/n product ratios under industrially relevant conditions (80-120 °C). The catalytic and preliminary mechanistic experiments indicate a key role of the iodide anions in both the catalytic activity and the isoselectivity.

Abstract: Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are continuously released into the atmosphere, lead to their analysis important for understanding ambient air quality. New material like NMC@ SiC® foam is chosen as the passive sampler in air. This grafted Silicon Carbide (SiC) foam exhibits properties (such as specific surface area and porosity) which make it a mixed adsorbent making it possible to trap gas phase and particulate phase. The campaign was carried out at the six sites in Strasbourg and the surrounding area during from June 2018 until the end of February 2020 and next to a site in the centre of Strasbourg, the active sampler is operated in parallel. The compounds targeted in this work were PAHs, PCBs, organochlorine and non-organochlorine pesticides, phenols, acids and amines. An analytical method coupling between ASE, SPE and SPME has been developed and optimized for these compounds. The optimized method achieves low LOD and LOQ for the desired compounds. The sample taken by the passive and active sampler makes it possible to determine the passive flow rates which are comparable to the values published in the literature for PUF foam and XAD-2 resin. The campaign results obtained from each site are converted into ng m-3, which shows the efficiency of this foam. It can absorb large numbers of more volatile compounds like pesticides, less volatile compounds like heavy PAHs and PCBs, and with its low hydrophobicity allows it to trap polar compounds (phenols and acids). In addition, the companions showed the trends in the concentration of compounds at each site studied and the different temporal variation., Les composés organiques semi volatiles (COSVs) sont rejetés continuellement dans l’atmosphère, ce qui rend leur analyse importante pour évaluer la qualité de l'air ambiant. Le nouveau matériau comme la mousse NMC@SiC® a été choisi comme échantillonneur passif dans l’air. Ce mousse de Carbure de Silicium (SiC) greffé présente des propriétés (telles que surface spécifique et porosité) qui en font un adsorbant mixte permettant de piéger phase gazeuse et phase particulaire. La campagne a été réalisée sur six sites à Strasbourg et alentours entre juin 2018 et fin février 2020 et à côté du site au centre de Strasbourg, un échantillonneur actif est exploité en parallèle. Les composés ciblés dans ce travail étaient les HAP, PCB, les pesticides organochlorés et non organochlorés, les phénols, les acides et les amines. Une couplage de méthode analytique entre ASE, SPE et SPME a été développé et optimisée pour ces composés. La méthode optimisée permet d’obtenir de faibles LOD et LOQ pour les composés recherchés. Le prélèvement réalisé par l’échantillonneur passif et actif permet de déterminer les débits d’échantillonnage qui sont comparables aux valeurs publiés dans la littérature pour la mousse PUF et la résine XAD-2. Les résultats de campagnes obtenues de chaque site sont convertis en ng m-3, ce qui permet de montrer l’efficacité de cette mousse. Elle peut adsorber un grand nombre de composés plus volatils comme des pesticides, des composés moins volatils comme les HAPs et PCBs lourds, et avec son hydrophobicité faible, elle permet de piéger des composés polaires (phénols et acides). De plus, les compagnes ont montré les tendances de concentrations de composés sur chaque site étudiés et les différentes variations temporelles.

Abstract: The preferential oxidation of CO in H2-rich mixtures (COPrOx) is a major catalytic reaction utilized for hydrogen purification. In the exploration of alternatives to noble metals, cobalt-based catalysts appear to be a very promising choice. The activity and stability of cobalt in the COPrOx reaction can be improved by the addition of transition metals and manganese is maybe the most prominent among them. Yet, the arrangement of the two components in the catalytically active state is largely unknown, which hinders in-depth understanding of the manganese promotion effect. Here, we compare pure and Mn-modified cobalt catalysts and correlate their structural and chemical characteristics with their COPrOx performance. The Mn-promoted cobalt catalyst is significantly more active than pure cobalt especially at intermediate reaction temperatures (around 200 °C). The addition of Mn improves the structural stability of the catalyst and helps to maintain higher specific surface areas. Chemical and microstructural analysis using various operando and in situ techniques revealed that Mn promotes CO conversion by partially stabilizing CoO phase during reaction conditions. It is also suggested that at high temperature, Mn suppress CO methanation reaction but promotes H2 oxidation. Apart of the particular interest in COPrOx reaction, in a general context, this work shows how the spatial distribution of the different catalyst components at nanoscopic level, may affect the surface chemistry and consequently control the reactivity.

Abstract: International audience; The functionalization of carbon nanotubes by polymers necessitates two steps, first their modification by oxidizing them or by covalently attaching small compounds to them, then the growth of the polymer chains from these anchors or their grafting onto them. In order to better control the process and the rate of functionalization, we develop polymers able to covalently react with the carbon nanotubes by their side chains in one step. We describe the synthesis of a copolymer of dodecylthiophene and its analogue bearing an aniline group at the end of the dodecyl side chain. This copolymer can functionalize single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) non-covalently and disperse more SWNTs than its hexyl analogues. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies show that in these non-covalent hybrids, the polymer forms p-stacked aggregates on the SWNTs. The non-covalent hybrids can be transformed into covalent ones by diazonium coupling. In these covalent hybrids the polymer is no longer p-stacked. According to Raman spectroscopy, the conformation of the poly(3-hexylthiophene) backbone is more ordered in the non-covalent hybrids than in the covalent ones.

Abstract: Electrospinning allows the fabrication of microstructured mats when the nanofiber is deposited on a patterned collector made of regularly distributed protuberances. Such directed self-assembling strategy results from the building of an electrostatic template induced by the charged deposited fiber strands suspended between the protuberances which in turns induces a field of attractive and repulsive forces that guide the deposition of the fiber during its landing. However, after a certain time of electrospinning the microstructuration of the mat is generally subjected to modification and is eventually lost. Here, it is shown that the measurement of the surface potential above the deposited nanofibers is a powerful tool to track the evolution of the fibrous microstructuration during the fabrication. First, the electrospinning above a single and adjustable gap is deeply investigated and a model is proposed to explain the surface potential kinetics as a function of the gap size and the processed polymer solution. Then, the surface potential kinetics is correlated with the evolution of the 3D microstructuration in the case of electrospinning on a micropatterned collector. This original strategy paves the way for the controlled fabrication of 3D microstructured mats dedicated to a wide range of applications.

Abstract: Proline homopolymer motifs are found in many proteins; their peculiar conformational and dynamic properties are often directly involved in those proteins' functions. However, the dynamics of proline homopolymers is hard to study by NMR due to a lack of amide protons and small chemical shift dispersion. Exploiting the spectroscopic properties of fluorinated prolines opens interesting perspectives to address these issues. Fluorinated prolines are already widely used in protein structure engineering – they introduce conformational and dynamical biases – but their use as 19F NMR reporters of proline conformation has not yet been explored. In this work, we look at model peptides where Cγ-fluorinated prolines with opposite configurations of the chiral Cγ centre have been introduced at two positions in distinct polyproline segments. By looking at the effects of swapping these (4R)-fluoroproline and (4S)-fluoroproline within the polyproline segments, we were able to separate the intrinsic conformational properties of the polyproline sequence from the conformational alterations instilled by fluorination. We assess the fluoroproline 19F relaxation properties, and we exploit the latter in elucidating binding kinetics to the SH3 (Src homology 3) domain.

Abstract: International audience; Several classes of biological reactions that are mediated by an enzyme and a co-factor can occur, to a slower extent, not only without the enzyme but even without the co-factor, under catalysis by metal ions. This observation has led to the proposal that metabolic pathways progressively evolved from using inorganic catalysts to using organocatalysts of increasing complexity. Transamination, the biological process by which ammonia is transferred between amino acids and α-keto acids, has a mechanism that has been well studied under enzyme/co-factor catalysis and under co-factor catalysis, but the metal ion-catalyzed variant was generally studied mostly at high temperatures (70–100 °C), and the details of its mechanism remained unclear. Here, we investigate which metal ions catalyze transamination under conditions relevant to biology (pH 7, 20–50 °C) and study the mechanism in detail. Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, and V5+ were identified as the most active metal ions under these constraints. Kinetic, stereochemical, and computational studies illuminate the mechanism of the reaction. Cu2+ and Co2+ are found to predominantly speed up the reaction by stabilizing a key imine intermediate. V5+ is found to accelerate the reaction by increasing the acidity of the bound imine. Ni2+ is found to do both to a limited extent. These results show that direct metal ion-catalyzed amino group transfer is highly favored even in the absence of co-factors or protein catalysts under biologically compatible reaction conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Although solar energy is considered as one of the ideal abundant sources of renewable energy to be integrated into catalytic processing, photonic and thermal excitations were perceived till recently as independent strategies in overcoming Arrhenius-type activation energy barriers in catalytic reactions. However, this dual-mode excitation of catalysts is receiving a growing interest nowadays due to promising evidence of synergy effects. A Ru/TiO2 photo-thermo-catalyst was prepared according to a UV-A light photo-assisted synthesis method allowing a fine control of the Ru nanoparticle size distribution, and the influence of a combined photonic (UV-A) and thermal activation on its performances in the gas phase decomposition of formic acid into hydrogen was investigated. The results showed that a dual photonic/thermal excitation in a onepot operation allows to increase the formic acid conversion and consequently the production of hydrogen vs. the reaction in the dark, the enhancement being all the more pronounced as the irradiance is high. The combined excitation allowed to drive the reaction at lower temperatures 2 upon irradiation while maintaining a similar conversion level. This low-temperature shift was all the more marked as the irradiance was high, and was accompanied by a strong increase in the selectivity to hydrogen. The change in both conversion and selectivity patterns suggested the implication of the light-excited electrons in the non-plasmonic Ru nanoparticles for conducting the reaction through an alternative low-energy transition state, with a lowering of the apparent energy activation, rather than a mechanism of localized-heat delivery.

Abstract: International audience; Polygonum cuspidatum (P. cuspidatum) is among the world’s most problematic invasive plant species with negative ecological, socio-economic and security consequences. Management operations in areas invaded systematically generate a large quantity of plant waste, most often without outlets. Using this plant material could constitute a new alternative treatment for sustainable management. P. cuspidatum is well known to have numerous biological properties, containing notably stilbenes, quinones, flavonoids and phenolic acids. The present work proposes a reliable strategy using powerful techniques for the screening and the evaluation of the dermo-cosmetic potential of its aerial parts (AP) and root parts (RP). To the best of our knowledge, only antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase activities were previously evaluated on P. cuspidatum among the targets studied (superoxide dismutase, hyaluronidase, elastase, collagenase and tyrosinase). The results revealed strong antioxidant and anti-collagenase activities, moderate anti-hyaluronidase activity, while weak anti-elastase and anti-tyrosinase activities were observed for ethanolic extracts. Different standards selected and screened on the same targets made it possible to correlate the observed residual activities of produced extracts of P. cuspidatum from Savoie Mont Blanc and their chemical compositions. A structure-activity study was thus conducted on main molecular families, widely represented in the genus Polygonum.
