A 38-year-old man with a history of resistant hypertension for more than 10 years underwent laparoscopic-based perivascular unilateral renal sympathetic nerve denervation in 2012. After the operation, the patient’s blood pressure has been controllable while the antihypertensive drug intake has decreased over 6 years. Laparoscopic-based perivascular unilateral renal sympathetic nerve denervation may be a potentially feasible and effective option in treating patients with resistant hypertension.

Controllable doping of iron (Fe) (3.9–17.8%) in hollow porous silica spheres with highly homogeneous distribution state was achieved successfully by a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis strategy. Based on the observation and analysis by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nitrogen sorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), it was found that molecular Fe species were intercalated into silica framework during the structural transformation of silica to hollow flake-shelled spheres, which leads to both stable fixation with open accessibility of Fe and high surface area of the Fe-doped silica hollow spheres (Fe-SHSs). When used as heterogeneous Fenton catalyst to degrade the dye of Acid orange 7 (AO7), enhanced catalysis performance was exhibited due to the sufficiently exposed active sites and fast mass transport in the system. The optimal catalysis condition was also studied by adjusting Fe-SHSs dosages, oxidant concentrations, and pH values). This work presents an effective strategy for chemical doping of metal components in the silica structures and may also be explored for other supported metal catalyst systems.

Adiponectin plays critical roles in energy metabolism and immunity of mammals by binding to its receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2). However, they have not been fully understood in fish. The present study examined the distribution of adiponectin receptors (AdipoRs) mRNA in grass carp, and the changes of their expressions under glucose load, insulin or glucagon stimulation, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid [poly (I:C)] challenge. As for glucose load, fish were orally administrated with glucose (1.67 mg/g BW) for 1, 3, 6, 12 h. For insulin or glucagon stimulation, the primary hepatocytes of grass carp were incubated with 0, 10, 100, 1000 nM insulin or glucagon for 1, 3, 6, 12 h. In the immune challenge experiment, grass carp were intraperitoneally injected with LPS or poly (I:C) (5 μg/g BW) for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 h. Finally, AdipoRs mRNA expression in all experiments was detected by Real-time quantitative PCR. The results showed that AdipoRs mRNA was widely expressed in various tissues of grass carp. The adipoR1a mRNA was highly expressed in the brain regions, and the highest level of adipoR2 mRNA was observed in the adipose tissue. Glucose load up-regulated adipoR1b and adipoR2 mRNA expressions in the liver at 6 h post administration and decreased adipoR1a expression in the muscle at 3 h. Insulin significantly enhanced adipoR1b and adipoR2 mRNA expressions in the hepatocytes at 1–12 h, and promoted adipoR1a mRNA expression at 1, 3 and 12 h, while glucagon had little effect on their expressions. LPS and poly (I:C) stimuli induced AdipoRs expression in the liver at 6 and 12 h, and their expressions in the muscle were decreased slightly or remained unchanged. In addition, LPS promoted AdipoRs expression in the kidney and spleen, whereas poly (I:C) only induced adipoR1a mRNA expression in the kidney, and increased adipoR2 mRNA level in the spleen. These results suggest that AdipoRs may act as one of the targets of insulin and immune response in grass carp, but whether they are direct target remains to be further studied.

Typically, Z-scheme heterojunctions with excellent photodegradation capability need electron mediator to assist electron transfer, such as redox water mediator and noble metal nanoparticles, but redox water mediators usually cause weak photoabsorption capability and constancy of the photocatalyst, and the noble metal nanoparticles as electron transfer mediator are costly and suffer from various reverse reactions between the redox mediators and the photocatalysts. In this work, oxygen vacancies (OVs)-assisting 2D/2D Z-scheme BiO1-XBr/g-C3N4 (OV-BOB-CN) photocatalysts were synthesized successfully via a simple hydrothermal treatment. Notably, the introduction of OVs is not only to improve visible-light absorption capacity of photocatalyst reflected by UV–vis DRS, but more importantly, it can act as electron mediator in capturing and shuttling electrons of Z-scheme heterostructure to accelerate the separation rate of photogenerated carriers, which was demonstrated by transient photocurrent analysis, EIS, and PL results. The suitable ratio of OV-BOB-CN (OV-50BOB-50CN) showed optimal photodegradation activity for RhB, which was mainly owed to the synergistic reaction between 2D/2D Z-scheme heterostructure and OVs. The photocatalytic mechanism of OV-BOB-CN was revealed by free radical trapping experiments. In conclusion, this work provided a new protocol to design 2D/2D Z-scheme photocatalyst involved OVs, thus guiding a new way to further enhance degradation activity of photocatalyst.

A mathematical model is proposed for a precipitation process of magnesium carbonate in a heterogeneous stirred tank reactor. The model includes a description of dissolution of Mg(OH)2, absorption of CO2 and precipitation of MgCO3. The Nernst-Planck equation is used in the dissolution model to maintain the mass balance and electroneutrality. The van Krevelen-Hoftijzer expression is introduced to describe the enhancement effect of reaction between dissolved CO2 and OH- on the mass transfer rate of dissolution and absorption. In the precipitation model, a simplified population balance equation is solved by a moment method for both dissolving and precipitating particles. Unknown precipitation kinetics parameters for Mg(OH)2MgCO3 system are fitted against experimental data and compared with Ca(OH)2CaCO3 system. According to the present analysis, the liquid-solid and gas-liquid mass transfer dominate the global rate of precipitation. The precipitation kinetics and pH have strong influences on the concentration of reactants and the yield of precipitation.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare disease in children, and its clinical severity varies. To better understand disease manifestation and treatment outcome, we analyzed 68 children diagnosed as AIHA for clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and treatment outcomes. Data show that primary AIHA accounted for 39.7% of all patients, whereas secondary AIHA accounted for 60.3%. Among them, Evans syndrome (ES) accounted for 20 cases (29.4%). The present study aimed to explore the function of miR‑34b promoter methylation in cell proliferation in children's acute leukemia. Quantitative PCR and methylation‑specific PCR were performed to measure the levels of miR‑34b and its promoter methylation in normal cells, eight leukemia cell lines as well as primary leukemic cells isolated from patients newly diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and mixed lymphocytic lymphoma. miR‑34b levels in leukemia cell lines and primary leukemic cells were significantly lower than those in normal cells. The miR‑34b promoter was found to be methylated in all leukemia cell lines, 24 of 31 ALL patients and 8 of 19 AML patients, but not in the 23 normal controls. miR‑34b expression and methylation of its promoter were not associated with most clinical parameters assessed; however, miR‑34b levels in prednisone‑sensitive ALL were significantly different from those in insensitive ALL. A cell counting kit‑8 assay showed that transfection of miR‑34b mimics into K562 cells inhibited their proliferation. Furthermore, treatment with the demethylating agent 5‑aza‑2‑deoxycytidine significantly enhanced miR‑34b expression levels and decreased the methylation status of its promoter in HL‑60 and K562 cells. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicated that in pediatric leukemia cells and leukemia cell lines, the expression of miR‑34b is inhibited by methylation of its promoter, which impairs the restraining effects of miR‑34b on cell proliferation. It was also indicated that the expression of miR‑34b in ALL patients may affect their response to early treatments.

An efficient titania supported Au nanocluster (NC) has been prepared for the direct synthesis of useful EtOH from CO2 and H2. The unique creation of an excellent synergistic effect between Au NCs and the underlying TiO2 support, especially the anatase crystal phase with abundant oxygen vacancies, can achieve the high performance for EtOH synthesis under moderate and practical conditions.

Ligustrazine is a principal ingredient of chuanxiong. Concerns regarding the evaluation of the effectiveness of ligustrazine in the treatment of UA have resulted in a meta-analysis combined with recent clinical evidence. Seven computer databases that included the China hospital knowledge database (CHKD), Wanfang Med Online, the Chinese medical journal database (CMJD), PubMed, Cochrane, Embase (Ovid), and Medline (Ovid) were systematically searched. We included randomized controlled trials and quasi-randomized controlled trials. Our systematic review identified 16 RCTs that met our eligibility criteria. Ligustrazine combined with conventional medicine was associated with an increased rate of marked improvement in symptoms and an increased rate of marked improvement of ECG compared with conventional Western medicine alone. Additionally, the use of ligustrazine was associated with significant trends in the reduction of the consumption of nitroglycerin and the level of fibrinogen when compared with conventional Western medicine alone. No firm results were found between the intervention and the control method groups in the reduction of the time of onset or the frequency of acute attack angina due to the high level of heterogeneity. In conclusion, our meta-analysis found that ligustrazine was associated with some benefits for people with unstable angina.

Black titania, with greatly improved solar absorption, has demonstrated its effectiveness in photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical cells (PEC), inspiring us to explore the blackening of other wide band-gap oxide materials for enhanced performance. Herein, we report the fabrication of black, reduced Nb2O5 nanorods (r-Nb2O5), with active exposed (001) surfaces, and their enhanced photocatalytic and PEC properties. Black r-Nb2O5 nanorods were obtained via reduction of pristine Nb2O5 by molten aluminum in a two-zone furnace. Unlike the black titania, r-Nb2O5 nanorods are well-crystallized, without a core-shell structure, which makes them outstanding in photocatalytic stability. Substantial Nb(4+) cation and oxygen vacancies (VO) were introduced into r-Nb2O5, resulting in the enhanced absorption in both the visible and near-infrared regions and improved charge separation and transport capability. The advantage of the r-Nb2O5 was also proved by its more efficient photoelectrochemical performance (138 times at 1.23 VRHE) and higher photocatalytic hydrogen-generation activity (13 times) than pristine Nb2O5. These results indicate that black r-Nb2O5 is a promising material for PEC application and photocatalysis.

Autophagy is required for hematopoietic stem cell multilineage differentiation, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. Using a conditional mouse model and human leukemia cells, we uncovered a mechanistic link between autophagy and hematopoietic stem cell differentiation. Loss of autophagy in mouse hematopoietic stem cells diminished the bone marrow generation of functional blood cells, in particular lymphocytes, and resulted in a leukemic phenotype and elevated Notch signaling. Physiological autophagy activity in mice was inversely correlated with Notch signaling during adult hematopoietic stem cell differentiation, while pathologically low autophagy was associated with upregulated Notch signaling in dysfunctional hematopoietic stem cells of acute leukemia patients. Furthermore, we show that autophagy directly degraded intracellular Notch, the active form of Notch receptor cleaved from the full-length Notch molecule by γ-secretase. Finally, we show that hematopoietic multilineage differentiation potential was restored in autophagy defective hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells when their Notch signaling was abrogated either pharmacologically with γ-secretase inhibitor DAPT or genetically with RNA interference of Notch effector RBPJ. Hence, we propose that autophagy sustains hematopoiesis by direct targeting Notch.

Autophagy is integral to hematopoiesis and protects against leukemogenesis. However, the fundamentals of the required molecular machinery have yet to be fully explored. Using conditional mouse models to create strategic defects in the hematopoietic hierarchy, we have shown that recovery capacities in stem cells and somatic cells differ if autophagy is impaired or flawed. An in vivo Atg7 deletion in hematopoietic stem cells completely ablates the autophagic response, leading to irreversible and ultimately lethal hematopoiesis. However, while no adverse phenotype is manifested in vivo by Atg7-deficient myeloid cells, they maintain active autophagy that is sensitive to brefeldin A, an inhibitor targeting Golgi-derived membranes destined for autophagosome formation in alternative autophagy. Removing Rab9, a key regulatory protein, in alternative autophagy, disables autophagy altogether in Atg7-deficient macrophages. Functional analysis indicates that ATG7-dependent canonical autophagy is physiologically active in both hematopoietic stem cells and in terminally differentiated hematopoietic cells; however, only terminally differentiated cells such as macrophages are rescued by alternative autophagy if canonical autophagy is ineffective. Thus, it appears that hematopoietic stem cells rely solely on ATG7-dependent canonical autophagy, whereas terminally differentiated or somatic cells are capable of alternative autophagy in the event that ATG7-mediated autophagy is dysfunctional. These findings offer new insight into the transformational trajectory of hematopoietic stem cells, which in our view renders the autophagic machinery in stem cells more vulnerable to disruption.

A series of novel 2D/2D Z-scheme visible-light-driven g-C3N4/Au/Bi2WO6 (CN/Au/BWO) photocatalysts were fabricated via a photoreduction and hydrothermal reaction process. The microscopic mechanisms of interface interaction, charge transfer and separation, as well as the influence on the photocatalytic activity of CN/Au/BWO composite were systematic investigated. The photocatalytic performance of CN/Au/BWO photocatalysts was evaluated by the photodegradation of Rhodamine B under visible-light illumination. The results showed that CN/Au(1)/BWO displayed the optimum photocatalytic activity, which was 1.48 times and 1.62 times as that of Bi2WO6 nanosheets and g-C3N4, respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity of CN/Au/BWO could be mainly attributed to the construction of 2D/2D Z-scheme architectures, which not only provided abundant active sites but also effectively improved the separation rate of photogenerated carriers. It was noted that Au nanoparticles acted as a redox mediator in the Z-scheme heterostructure between Bi2WO6 and g-C3N4 to promote the transmission and separation of photo-generated electrons and holes in the middle of Bi2WO6 and g-C3N4. A possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism of photocatalytic RhB degradation over CN/Au/BWO was tentatively proposed through active species trapping experiments. In summary, the current study could provide a new insight for designing effective 2D/2D Z-scheme photocatalysts to guide the further improvement of their photocatalytic activity.

IGFBPs play a pivotal role in regulating the physiological function of IGFs (insulin-like growth factors). As an important member of IGFBPs, IGFBP3 is involved in the regulation of physiological functions of IGFs. To investigate the functional role of Igfbp3 in a herbivorous fish species, grass carp igfbp3 (GenBank accession no. MN251843) was isolated from the liver by molecular cloning. The ORF of grass carp igfbp3 was 882 bp, which encoded 293 amino acids, and the first 22 amino acids comprised the signal peptide. The predicted molecular weight of grass carp Igfbp3 is 31.95 kDa, and the theoretical isoelectric point is 8.32. Grass carp Igfbp3 displayed a high identity with its counterparts of common carp and zebrafish. And phylogenetic tree analysis showed that the grass carp Igfbp3 was clustered into the Igfbp3 subgroups of common carp and zebrafish. Tissue distribution study showed that igfbp3 was ubiquitously expressed in all tissues examined in the present study. High expression level of igfbp3 was detected in the heart, brain and fat of grass carp. The OGTT demonstrated that igfbp3 mRNA expression was significantly elevated in the liver of grass carp in response to glucose treatment. In vitro study showed that insulin could markedly stimulated igfbp3 mRNA expression in primary grass carp hepatocytes. Moreover, igfbp3 mRNA levels were also regulated by glucagon in grass carp primary hepatocytes. These results may provide the theoretical foundation for investigating the role of Igfbp3 in fish metabolism.

“Atomic” intercalation of magnesium (Mg) in mesoporous silica hollow spheres which are composed of ultrathin nanosheets with several nanometers in width has been achieved through a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis process. The highly dispersed state of Mg in the silica hollow spheres leads to the creation of more complicated shell morphology with higher surface area and larger pore volume than the silica hollow spheres without Mg. With the Mg intercalation, the structure may provide not only suitable spaces but also surface functions for the adsorption of various organic pollutants. In the removal of dyes (cationic or anionic) in the water solution, the Mg intercalated silica spheres showed much higher adsorption capacity in contrast to the silica hollow spheres without Mg. The removal efficiency can also be well maintained for repeated usage after the recovery. The work presents a new strategy to obtain silica spheres with highly homogeneously dispersed Mg and also may further promote the potential applications of hybrid silica materials in catalysis, drug delivery, and biosensing etc.

Generally, fish are thought to have a limited ability to utilize carbohydrate. Postprandial blood glucose is cleared sluggishly in fish, resulting in prolonged hyperglycemia. Facilitative glucose transporters (GLUTs) play an important role in glucose utilization. In the present study, the expression levels of glut2 in different tissues were detected in grass carp. Furthermore, the effects of oral glucose administration on glut2 mRNA expression in the liver, intestine and kidney were investigated, and we also evaluated the response of glut2 mRNA to insulin and glucagon in the primary hepatocytes of grass carp. The expression level of glut2 mRNA was highest in the liver, followed by the intestine and kidney, but lower in other tissues. The result of glucose tolerance test (GTT) showed that serum glucose reached the highest level at 3 h after GTT and recovered to the basic level at 6 h. The glut2 mRNA in the intestine was up-regulated at 1 h after GTT. However, the glut2 mRNA expression in the liver of grass carp was unchanged after GTT for 1, 3, 6 h, and even decreased at 12 h after GTT. In addition, the expression of glut2 mRNA in the primary hepatocytes was enhanced by insulin and glucagon at 3 h post treatment. These results suggested that glut2 expression in the liver of grass carp was sensitive to insulin and glucagon, but not blood glucose. The up-regulation of glut2 by these hormones might be involved in the bi-directional transportation of glucose in the liver.

Background HPV 18 is one of the most prevalent oncogenic types, only second to HPV 16, and included in the licensed vaccines on the market. In this study, we describe the production and characterization of a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to HPV18. Methods The immunocompetence of 1B1 and 4C2 mAbs for HPV L1 protein was evaluated by SDS-PAGE analysis, neutralization assays, affinity identification, and ELISA. The 1B1 and 4C2 genes were sequenced and analyzed. Finally, the detection kit with the two mAbs was assessed for linearity, repeatability and specificity. Results Both mAbs specifically recognized HPV18 L1 and virus-like particles (VLPs). These mAbs are conformation-neutralizing antibodies that have high affinity and type specificity. Based on these characteristics of these mAbs, we developed an ELISA kit for specifically detecting HPV 18 antigen. We showed that this kit displayed good linearity, repeatability and sensitivity for detecting HPV18 L1 pentamer and HPV18 VLP. Conclusions We characterized two monoclonal neutralizing antibodies for HPV L1 protein, and developed an ELISA kit for specifically detecting HPV 18 antigen. This newly developed kit can be used to monitor the potency of HPV vaccines throughout the entire production process as well as preliminary analysis of HPV18 infections.

BACKGROUND Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is related to the health of the human body and is an indispensable nutrient for human beings. Some studies indicated that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) may be associated with vitamin D deficiency, but the current understanding of this point of view remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between serum 25-hydroxyl vitamin D (25 [OH] D) concentration and DPN in patients with T2DM by a meta-analysis, and to provide a reference for doctors. METHODS Relevant studies were selected from the PubMed, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP databases, and Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform databases dating from 2000 to December 2017. A total of 75 articles related to serum 25 (OH) D and DPN were selected from 2000 to December 2017. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the literature, a quality assessment was conducted using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale, and a meta-analysis was performed by RevMan5.3 statistical software. Chiral molecules can generally exhibit different physiological and biological activities, thus triggering wide interest in chiral discrimination. Herein, we demonstrate a sensitive homoleptic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes nanowires (Ir(piq)3 NWs) electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for high-performance discrimination of chiral molecules based on the difference in electron-transfer ability between different radicals. The developed Ir(piq)3 NWs/ITO sensor exhibits high ECL signal and satisfying stability without the presence of co-reactant based on hot electron-induced ECL, which would spur its further application in detecting proline enantiomers. Obvious difference on the ECL intensity towards L -Pro and D -Pro is observed under the presence of high concentration of proline enantiomers, which attributes to the different electron-transfer capability between Ir+(piq)3 and L -pro•/ D -pro•. In order to attain high-performance discrimination, we construct the Ir(piq)3 NWs/TPrA sensor to achieve chiral discrimination for trace amounts of proline enantiomers (1.0 × 10−9 M), which attributes to the strong molecular interactions enhanced by introduction of active radical TPrA•.

Purpose Immune suppression is common in patients with advanced breast cancer but the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have not been sufficiently studied. In this study, we aimed to identify B7 family members that were able to predict the immune status of patients, and which may serve as potential targets for the treatment of breast cancer. We also aimed to identify microRNAs that may regulate the expression of B7 family members. Methods The Cancer Genome Atlas data from 1,092 patients with breast cancer, including gene expression, microRNA expression and survival data, were used for statistical and survival analyses. Polymerase chain reaction and Western blot were used to measure messenger RNA and protein expression, respectively. Luciferase assay was used to investigate direct microRNA target. Results Bioinformatic analysis predicted that microRNA (miR)-93, miR-195, miR-497, and miR-340 are potential regulators of the immune evasion of breast cancer cells, and that they exert this function by targeting CD274, PDCD1LG2, and NCR3LG1. We chose CD274 for further investigations. We found that miR-195, miR-497, and CD274 expression levels were inversely correlated in MDA-MB-231 cells, and miR-195 and miR-497 expressions mimic inhibited CD274 expression in vitro. Mechanistic investigations demonstrated that miR-195 and miR-497 directly target CD274 3' untranslated region. Conclusion Our data indicated that the level of B7 family members can predict the prognosis of breast cancer patients, and miR-195/miR-497 regulate CD274 expression in triple negative breast cancer. This regulation may further influence tumor progression and the immune tolerance mechanism in breast cancer and may be able to predict the effect of immunotherapy on patients.

The topologically twisted index for ABJM theory with gauge group $U(N)_k \times U(N)_{-k}$ has recently been shown, in the large-$N$ limit, to reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of certain magnetically charged asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes. We numerically study the index beyond the large-$N$ limit and provide evidence that it contains a subleading logarithmic term of the form $-1/2\log N$. On the holographic side, this term naturally arises from a one-loop computation. However, we find that the contribution coming from the near horizon states does not reproduce the field theory answer. Aim. To investigate whether vitamin C is effective in the treatment of the common cold.Method. After systematically searching the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Cochrane Library, Elsevier, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP databases, and WANFANG databases, 9 randomized placebo-controlled trials were included in our meta-analysis in RevMan 5.3 software, all of which were in English.Results. In the evaluation of vitamin C, administration of extra therapeutic doses at the onset of cold despite routine supplementation was found to help reduce its duration (mean difference (MD) = -0.56, 95% confidence interval (CI) [-1.03, -0.10], and P = 0.02), shorten the time of confinement indoors (MD = -0.41, 95% CI [-0.62, -0.19], and P = 0.0002), and relieve the symptoms associated with it, including chest pain (MD = -0.40, 95% CI [-0.77, -0.03], and P = 0.03), fever (MD = -0.45, 95% CI [-0.78, -0.11], and P = 0.009), and chills (MD = -0.36, 95% CI [-0.65, -0.07], and P = 0.01).Conclusions. Extra doses of vitamin C could benefit some patients who contract the common cold despite taking daily vitamin C supplements.

We propose a population balance model coupled with a mass transfer model to simulate the simultaneous shrinkage and breakage of particles during the reactive dissolution of particle agglomerates in stirred tank. The high-order moment-conserving method of classes is adopted to solve the population balance model. In the mass transfer model, the driving force is estimated by considering the physical constraints including electroneutrality, water dissociation and dissolution equilibrium. The simulation results, including the concentration and the particle size distribution of the final products, were validated by experiments carried out in a laboratory scale stirred tank. The unknown physical parameters in the particle breakage model were fitted against the experimental data. The results underline the importance of particle breakage in the reactive dissolution modeling under the investigated operating conditions. Several daughter size distributions functions found in literature were tested. Among them, the beta distribution provides the most flexible way to describe breakage of the particle agglomerates

To investigate the distribution of mercury (Hg) in Futian mangrove wetland, surface sediments from land to sea were collected, including Kandelia obovata, Avicennia marina, Sonneratia caseolaris, and mud flat. The ecological risks of Hg in sediments were also assessed. The results showed that mangrove forests acidified sediments and promoted the accumulation of salinity and organic matter in sediments. Hg concentrations in both mangrove forests (154.7–218.4 ng g−1) and mud flat sediments (226.3–251.9 ng g−1) surpassed the background level (71.0 ng g−1). Furthermore, Hg concentrations in sediments decreased gradually from sea to land at all depth. From the bottom to the top layer sediment, Hg concentration decreased gradually in the sediments near land, while it kept vertically stable in the coastal area, indicating its pollution may mainly come from the coastal area rather than the land to some extent. Although the mean values of geo-accumulation indexes revealed uncontaminated to moderately contaminated levels, the mean values of potential ecological risk coefficients revealed considerable ecological risk of Hg to the environment, deserving further attention.

Highlight A new vegetation index insensitive to adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces was proposed in this paper to accurately estimate leaf chlorophyll content., Quick non-destructive assessment of leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is important for studying phenotypes related to plant growth and stress resistance. This study was undertaken to investigate the quantitative relationship between LCC and different vegetation indices (VIs) on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces of white poplar (Populus alba), which has dense tubular hairs on its abaxial surface, and Chinese elm (Ulmus pumila var. pendula), which does not show obvious superficial differences except for lighter colour on the abaxial surface. Some published and newly developed VIs were tested to relate them to LCC. The results showed that most of the published VIs had strong relationships with LCC on the one-surface dataset, but did not show a clear relationship with LCC when both adaxial and abaxial surface reflectance data were included. Among the reflectance indices tested, the modified Datt index, (R 719−R 726)/(R 719−R 743), performed best and is proposed as a new index for remote estimation of chlorophyll content in plants with varying leaf surface structures. It explained 92% of LCC variation in this research, and the root mean square error of the LCC prediction was 5.23 μg/cm2. This new index is insensitive to the effects of adaxial and abaxial leaf surface structures and is strongly related to the variation in reflectance caused by chlorophyll content.

Autophagy is implicated in hematopoiesis, but its role in the regulation of the hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) cycle remains obscure. Here, we show that autophagy is essential to maintain and regulate the cell cycle of HSPCs in a nutrient-dependent manner. The loss of autophagy via conditional deletion of its essential gene atg7 ablated the cell cycle of HSPCs. Under physiologic or nutrient-rich conditions, the in vivo activation of autophagy promoted the cell cycle entry of hematopoietic stem cells and upregulated cyclin D3 expression in HSPCs. In contrast, under poor nutrient conditions, the ex vivo inhibition of early, but not late, autophagy signaling events enhanced the G1/S transition of HSPCs. Cyclin D3 was downregulated in HSPCs in response to nutrient stress. A knockdown of cyclin D3 blocked the G1/S transition in HSPCs. Surprisingly, the ex vivo inhibition of starvation-induced early, but not late, autophagy signaling inhibited the ubiquitin-mediated degradation of cyclin D3 in HSPCs. Furthermore, a conditional autophagy defect also had this effect, leading to an elevated cyclin D3 level in these cells. This suggested a dependency of the proteasomal degradation of cyclin D3 on early, but not late, events in autophagy signaling under nutrient stress in HSPCs. Our results thus indicate a dual role of autophagy in the nutrient-dependent modulation of the cell cycle entry of hematopoietic stem cells and G1/S transition of HSPCs via the regulation of cyclin D3 to maintain a proper cell cycle in HSPCs and normal hematopoiesis during adult life.

Objectives: This study was designed to observe the efficacy and safety of renal denervation from the inside and outside of renal arteries. Methods: Fourteen beagles were randomly divided into a control group (n = 4) and treatment group (n = 10). One renal artery in every beagle of the treatment group was randomly assigned to an intimal group (10 renal arteries) which underwent percutaneous renal denervation from the inside, and another renal artery was assigned to an adventitial group (10 renal arteries) which underwent renal denervation from the outside by laparotomy. Results: Compared with the intimal group, the renal norepinephrine (NE) concentration in the adventitial group had significantly decreased (p = 0.003) at 3 months postsurgery. Renal artery HE staining showed that the perineurium from the adventitial group appeared thickened. Western blotting showed that renal tissue tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) protein expression in the adventitial group was significantly lower than that in the intimal group (p < 0.01) at 3 months postsurgery. There was a renal artery stenosis and a renal atrophy in the intimal group after 1 month of follow-up. Conclusion: The inhibitory effect on renal sympathetic nerve activity was more effective in the adventitial group than the intimal group, and renal denervation in the former group was safe.

Black titania has attracted enormous attention due to its enhanced photocatalytic activity via increased solar absorption, but few studies extended the investigations to other wide band-gap titanates. Herein, strontium titanate (SrTiO3), a typical ternary titanate with more potential in photocatalysis, is selected as the target material. Black SrTiO3 nanocrystals were obtained by molten aluminum reduction of solution-processed pristine SrTiO3 in a two-zone furnace. Different from the black titania, black SrTiO3 nanocrystals are well-crystallized and have no core–shell structure. Substantial Ti3+ cations and oxygen vacancies are introduced into SrTiO3 after aluminum reduction, which results in enhanced absorption in both visible and near-infrared regions, and improved charge separation and transport. The photocatalytic hydrogen-generation and photoelectrochemical investigations demonstrate that black SrTiO3 exhibits an impressive improvement (2.5 times and 2.4 times at 1.23 VRHE, respectively) compared with white SrTiO3.

Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) is highly expressed in many cancers and therefore a biomarker of transformation and potential target for the development of cancer-specific small molecule drugs. RO3280 was recently identified as a novel PLK1 inhibitor, however its therapeutic effects in leukemia treatment are still unknown. We found that the PLK1 protein was highly expressed in leukemia cell lines as well as 73.3% (11/15) of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) samples. PLK1 mRNA expression was significantly higher in AML samples compared with control samples (82.95 ± 110.28 vs. 6.36 ± 6.35, p &lt, 0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that shorter survival time correlated with high tumor PLK1 expression (p = 0.002). The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of RO3280 for acute leukemia cells was between 74 and 797 nM. The IC50 of RO3280 in primary acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and AML cells was between 35.49 and 110.76 nM and 52.80 and 147.50 nM, respectively. RO3280 induced apoptosis and cell cycle disorder in leukemia cells. RO3280 treatment regulated several apoptosis-associated genes. The regulation of DCC, CDKN1A, BTK, and SOCS2 was verified by western blot. These results provide insights into the potential use of RO3280 for AML therapy, however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be determined.

For children with precursor B (pre-B) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with TCF3-PBX1 fusion gene, their prognosis has been a controversial topic. From January 2008 to December 2012 in our hospital, 450 patients were diagnosed as ALL. Clinical characteristics of 20 patients with TCF3-PBX1 fusion gene were analyzed retrospectively, which were classified to the intermediate-risk (IR) group according to Chinese Children Leukemia Group-2008 (CCLG-2008) risk-stratification criteria and protocol based on the backbone of BFM 95 trails. Eighty five cases without TCF3-PBX1 in the same IR group were regarded as the comparison group. There were no differences in age, gender, initial white blood cell (WBC) count, status of central nerves system (CNS) at diagnosis and complete remission (CR) rates of bone marrow (BM) between the two groups (P.05). The 5-year probability of event-free survival (EFS) rates were 84.4 ± 15.6% and 73.5 ± 15.6% in the TCF3-PBX1 group and the comparison group (P = .35), respectively. The 5-year probability of overall survival (OS) rates were 86.0 ± 17.6% and 81.8 ± 17.6% (P = .46), respectively. Relapse rates were 10.5% and 12.9% (P = 1.00), respectively. There were not cases with CNS relapse in the TCF3-PBX1 group. When intensive chemotherapy was used, the TCF3-PBX1 was associated with a favorable outcome in childhood pre-B ALL.

B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of pediatric leukemia. Despite improved remission rates, current treatment regimens for pediatric B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia are often associated with adverse effects and central nervous system relapse, necessitating more effective and safer agents. Bafilomycin A1 is an inhibitor of vacuolar H(+)-ATPase that is frequently used at high concentration to block late-phase autophagy. Here, we show that bafilomycin A1 at a low concentration (1 nM) effectively and specifically inhibited and killed pediatric B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells. It targeted both early and late stages of the autophagy pathway by activating mammalian target of rapamycin signaling and by disassociating the Beclin 1-Vps34 complex, as well as by inhibiting the formation of autolysosomes, all of which attenuated functional autophagy. Bafilomycin A1 also targeted mitochondria and induced caspase-independent apoptosis by inducing the translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor from mitochondria to the nucleus. Moreover, bafilomycin A1 induced the binding of Beclin 1 to Bcl-2, which further inhibited autophagy and promoted apoptotic cell death. In primary cells from pediatric patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and a xenograft model, bafilomycin A1 specifically targeted leukemia cells while sparing normal cells. An in vivo mouse toxicity assay confirmed that bafilomycin A1 is safe. Our data thus suggest that bafilomycin A1 is a promising candidate drug for the treatment of pediatric B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Background: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is considered a novel method for diagnosing pancreatic cancer, but currently, there is no conclusive evidence of its accuracy. Using CEUS in discriminating between pancreatic carcinoma and other pancreatic lesions, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of CEUS in predicting pancreatic tumours. Methods: Relevant studies were selected from the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Elsevier, CNKI, VIP, and WANFANG databases dating from January 2006 to May 2017. The following terms were used as keywords: “pancreatic cancer” OR “pancreatic carcinoma,” “contrast-enhanced ultrasonography” OR “contrast-enhanced ultrasound” OR “CEUS,” and “diagnosis.” The selection criteria are as follows: pancreatic carcinomas diagnosed by CEUS while the main reference standard was surgical pathology or biopsy (if it involved a clinical diagnosis, particular criteria emphasized); SonoVue or Levovist was the contrast agent; true positive, false positive, false negative, and true negative rates were obtained or calculated to construct the 2 × 2 contingency table; English or Chinese articles; at least 20 patients were enrolled in each group. The Quality Assessment for Studies of Diagnostic Accuracy was employed to evaluate the quality of articles. Pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio, summary receiver-operating characteristic curves, and the area under curve were evaluated to estimate the overall diagnostic efficiency. Pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with fixed-effect models. Results: Eight of 184 records were eligible for a meta-analysis after independent scrutinization by 2 reviewers. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratios were 0.86 (95% CI 0.81–0.90), 0.75 (95% CI 0.68–0.82), 3.56 (95% CI 2.64–4.78), 0.19 (95% CI 0.13–0.27), and 22.260 (95% CI 8.980–55.177), respectively. The area under the SROC curve was 0.9088. Conclusion: CEUS has a satisfying pooled sensitivity and specificity for discriminating pancreatic cancer from other pancreatic lesions.

Background Endometriosis is a multifactorial, oestrogen-dependent, inflammatory, gynaecological condition that can result in long-lasting visceral pelvic pain and infertility. Acupuncture could be an effective treatment for endometriosis and may relieve pain. Our aim in the present study was to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment for endometriosis-related pain. Methods In December 2016, six databases were searched for randomised controlled trials that determined the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of endometriosis-related pain. Ultimately, 10 studies involving 589 patients were included. The main outcomes assessed were variation in pain level, variation in peripheral blood CA-125 level, and clinical effective rate. All analyses were performed using comprehensive meta-analysis statistical software. Results Of the 10 studies included, only one pilot study used a placebo control and assessed blinding; the rest used various controls (medications and herbs), which were impossible to blind. The sample sizes were small in all studies, ranging from 8 to 36 patients per arm. Within eleven dimensional supergravity we compute the logarithmic correction to the entropy of magnetically charged asymptotically AdS${}_4$ black holes with arbitrary horizon topology. We find perfect agreement with the expected microscopic result arising from the dual field theory computation of the topologically twisted index. Our result relies crucially on a particular limit to the extremal black hole case and clarifies some aspects of quantum corrections in asymptotically AdS spacetimes., Comment: 5 pages. Rapamycin has been shown to inhibit the growth of leukemic cells via an unknown mechanism. In our current study, we show that rapamycin activates autophagy in pediatric t(1;19) pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (pre-B ALL) cells and thereby inhibits proliferation and induces growth arrest in these cells. Rapamycin was found to downregulate an extensive array of positive cell cycle regulators, reduce the total DNA and RNA levels, and specifically downregulate the gene transcription of DNA pol δ1 and RNA pol II. Furthermore, we show that both rapamycin and starvation caused a downregulation of the DNA pol δ1 and RNA pol II proteins which was reversed by the autophagy inhibitor 3-MA. Consistent with the results of our autophagic flux analysis, confocal microscopy indicated that both rapamycin and starvation cause the colocalization of DNA pol δ1 and RNA pol II with GFP-LC3 at autophagosomes. This colocalization was blocked by the autophagy inhibitor bafilomycin A1 which inhibits the fusion between autophagosomes and lysosomes. These data suggest that rapamycin inhibits the growth of pediatric t(1;19) pre-B ALL cells through both transcriptional inhibition and autophagic degradation of DNA pol δ1 and RNA pol II.

A novel catalyst based on g-C3N4/activated carbon was prepared by adding CuCl2. The catalytic performance of the as-prepared catalyst was investigated in the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption, low temperature N2 adsorption/desorption (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller), and thermal gravity analysis showed that Cu-g-C3N4/AC significantly enhanced the catalytic performance of the original catalyst by increasing the relative pyrrolic N content. Cu-g-C3N4/AC also affected the adsorption of hydrogen chloride and acetylene, as well as inhibited the coke deposition during acetylene hydrochlorination.

Solar desalination driven by solar radiation as heat source is freely available, however, hindered by low efficiency. Herein, we first design and synthesize black titania with a unique nanocage structure simultaneously with light trapping effect to enhance light harvesting, well-crystallized interconnected nanograins to accelerate the heat transfer from titania to water and with opening mesopores (4–10 nm) to facilitate the permeation of water vapor. Furthermore, the coated self-floating black titania nanocages film localizes the temperature increase at the water–air interface rather than uniformly heating the bulk of the water, which ultimately results in a solar–thermal conversion efficiency as high as 70.9% under a simulated solar light with an intensity of 1 kW m–2 (1 sun). This finding should inspire new black materials with rationally designed structure for superior solar desalination performance.

Objective Diabetes substantially increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CAD) and is associated with an increased risk of CAD mortality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in coronary artery plaque, coronary artery calcification (CAC) measured in outpatients with and without type 2 diabetes, and the occurrence rate of a major adverse cardiac event (MACE) throughout follow-up with the same patients. Methods Five hundred eighty-eight outpatients with suspected CAD comprising 208 diabetic and 380 non-diabetic patients were enrolled in this study. Coronary artery plaque and CAC scores were detected and measured by dual-source computed tomography. The major MACE during the follow-up period (4.0–20 months) was recorded and its relationship to type 2 diabetes and CAC was investigated. Results The diabetes group had higher CAC scores in the left anterior descending, left circumflex, and right coronary arteries and total CAC burden than the group without diabetes. The diabetes group had more diseased coronary segments and more obstructed vessels than the non-diabetes group. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that diabetes is positively associated with mixed coronary plaque and non-calcified plaque. All patients in the diabetes group and all patients with higher CACs in both groups had a higher incidence rate of MACEs. Conclusion Patients with type 2 diabetes have a higher prevalence of obstructive CAD, higher CAC scores, and a higher incidence rate of MACEs than those without diabetes. Diabetes and higher CAC scores were the important predictors of the occurrence of MACEs throughout follow-up with patients.

With the many-body expansion method, an accurate global potential energy surface (PES) is constructed for SiH2+(X2A1) by mapping 4762 ab initio energy points calculated on the multireference configuration interaction level including Davidson corrections with aug-cc-pV6Z Dunning’s basis set. The dissociation energies and equilibrium geometries of SiH+(X1Σ+) and H2(X1Σg+) agree well with the experimental results. The topographical characteristics of all stationary points for the SiH2+(X2A1) PES are discussed in detail and compared with other theoretical and experimental results. In order to verify the validity and usability of the present PES, the dynamics calculations based on the Chebyshev quantum wave packet method are performed for the H(S2)+SiH+(X1Σ+)→Si+(P2)+H2(X1Σg+) reaction. The probabilities, the total integral cross sections, and the rate constants are computed, and the analogies with the corresponding ones of reaction H(S2) + CH+(X1Σ+)→C+(P2) + H2(X1Σg+) are also made. The reasonable dynamical behavior throughout the entire configuration space indicates that the PES is suitable for relevant dynamics investigations and serves as a building block for constructing the PES of larger molecular systems containing Si+/H.

To better understand the hydrodynamic behavior of an internally circulating fluidized bed, solids holdup in the down-comer ( ɛ sD ), solids circulation rate ( G s ) and gas bypassing fraction (from down-comer to riser γ DR , and from riser to down-comer γ RD ) were experimentally studied. The effects of gas velocities in the riser and in the down-comer ( U R and U D ), orifice diameter in the draft tube ( d or ), and draft tube height ( H R ) were investigated. Experimental results showed that increase of gas velocities led to increase in G s and γ DR , and slight decrease in γ RD . Larger orifice diameter on the draft tube led to higher ɛ sD , G s and γ DR , but had insignificant influence on γ RD . With increasing draft tube height, both G s and γ DR first increased and then decreased, while γ RD first decreased and then increased. Proposed correlations for predicting the hydrodynamic parameters agreed reasonably well with experimental values.
