201. The Beat-Frequency Interpretation of Kilohertz QPOs in Neutron Star Low-Mass X-ray Binaries

Abstract: Pairs of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at kilohertz frequencies are a common phenomenon in several neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries. The frequency separation of the QPO peaks in the pair appears to be constant in many sources and directly related to the neutron star spin frequency. However, in Sco X-1 and possibly in 4U 1608-52, the frequency separation of the QPOs decreases with increasing inferred mass accretion rate. We show that the currently available Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data are consistent with the hypothesis that the frequency separations in all sources vary by amounts similar to the variation in Sco X-1. 203. Ginga observations of Cygnus X-2

Abstract: We analysed all X-ray data on the low-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-2 obtained with Ginga. The analysis of the spectral and fast timing behaviour of these 4 years of data provides new insights in the behaviour of this Z source. We confirm the previously observed recurrent patterns of behaviour in the X-ray colour-colour and hardness-intensity diagrams (HIDs) consisting of shifts and shape changes in the Z track. The source behaviour is correlated with overall intensity. When the overall intensity increases, the mean velocity of the motion along the normal branch (NB) of the Z track increase, as well as the width of the NB in the HID. Contrary to previous results we find that, during different observations, when the source is at the same position in the NB of the Z track the rapid X-ray variability differs significantly. During the Kuulkers et al. (1996) ``medium'' level, a normal branch quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) is detected, which is not seen during the ``high'' overall intensity level. During the high overall intensity level episodes the very-low frequency noise on the lower NB is very strong, whereas during the medium overall intensity level episodes this noise component at the same position in the Z track is much weaker. The explanation of the different overall intensity levels with a precessing accretion disk is difficult to reconcile with our data. Furthermore, the frequency of the horizontal branch QPO decreases when Cyg X-2 enters the upper NB, giving a model dependent upper limit on the magnetic field strength at the magnetic equator of ~8.5x10^9 G. We also report 5 bursts, with durations of ~5 s, whose occurrence are uncorrelated with location in the Z track, overall intensity level or orbital phase. Abstract: Very-faint X-ray binaries (VFXBs) are a subclass of black holes and neutron stars in binaries that appear to be accreting at a very low rate. In addition to providing interesting constraints on poorly understood forms of accretion, elucidating the nature of VFXBs is particularly interesting for binary evolution and population modelling. Through near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, we here investigate the nature of the bursting neutron star and VFXB 1RXH J173523.7−354013 (J1735), which persistently accretes at an X-ray luminosity of L X ∼ 1034–1035 ergs−1. Our analysis shows that the NIR emission is dominated by that of the companion star, which we find to be a late G or early K-type giant, making this the second neutron star identified as a VFXB found to have a giant companion. We discuss how several of the system properties are difficult to reconcile with a wind-fed symbiotic X-ray binary. We therefore also propose an alternative scenario wherein J1735 is a wide binary system (supported by the discovery of a 7.5 d modulation in the NIR light curves) with a quiescent luminosity of L X ∼ 1034–1035 ergs−1, in which the donor star is overflowing its Roche lobe. This raises the possibility that J1735 may, every century or more, exhibit very long and very bright outbursts during which it reaches accretion rates around the Eddington limit like the neutron star Z sources. Abstract: Functional ultrasound (fUS) is a novel neuroimaging technique that measures brain hemodynamics through a time series of Doppler images. The measured spatiotemporal hemodynamic changes reflect changes in neural activity through the neurovascular coupling (NVC). Often, such image time series is used to analyze dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) by directly computing a connectivity metric between the measured hemodynamic signals, ignoring the functional connectomics of underlying neural populations. This work proposes a novel fUS signal model, consisting of a hidden Markov model (HMM) cascaded with a convolutive model, that captures how fUS signals arise from a generative perspective while incorporating high-level biological functioning of neural populations. Consequently, the developed model enables inference of functional connectivity networks, being co-activation patterns (CAPs) of neural populations. Our results show that our methods can identify biologically plausible networks of functional connectivity. Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.

215. Swift/XRT detects a new accretion outburst from the Galactic center X-ray transient AX J1745.6-2901

Abstract: Starting on 2021 July 10, our daily Swift/XRT monitoring observations of the Galactic center (Degenaar et al. 2015) detect activity from a transient X-ray source located ~1' to the South-East of Sgr A*. Running the online XRT products tool on the 1.0-ks exposure obtained on July 13 (obsID 00096134085), we determine an 'enhanced' position for this X-ray transient of R.A. = 17:45:35.71, Dec. = -29:01:33.2 (J2000) with a 90% confidence error of 2.8" (Goad et al. 2007; Evans et al. 2009).

Abstract: Breast cancer (BC) risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers varies by genetic and familial factors. About 50 common variants have been shown to modify BC risk for mutation carriers. All but three, were identified in general population studies. Other mutation carrier-specific susceptibility variants may exist but studies of mutation carriers have so far been underpowered. We conduct a novel case-only genome-wide association study comparing genotype frequencies between 60,212 general population BC cases and 13,007 cases with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. We identify robust novel associations for 2 variants with BC for BRCA1 and 3 for BRCA2 mutation carriers, P, Breast cancer risk for BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers varies depending on other genetic factors. Here, the authors perform a case-only genome-wide association study and highlight novel loci associated with breast cancer risk for BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers.

Abstract: Breast cancer (BC) risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers varies by genetic and familial factors. About 50 common variants have been shown to modify BC risk for mutation carriers. All but three, were identified in general population studies. Other mutation carrier-specific susceptibility variants may exist but studies of mutation carriers have so far been underpowered. We conduct a novel case-only genome-wide association study comparing genotype frequencies between 60,212 general population BC cases and 13,007 cases with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. We identify robust novel associations for 2 variants with BC for BRCA1 and 3 for BRCA2 mutation carriers, P < 10−8, at 5 loci, which are not associated with risk in the general population. They include rs60882887 at 11p11.2 where MADD, SP11 and EIF1, genes previously implicated in BC biology, are predicted as potential targets. These findings will contribute towards customising BC polygenic risk scores for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers.

Abstract: Breast cancer (BC) risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers varies by genetic and familial factors. About 50 common variants have been shown to modify BC risk for mutation carriers. All but three, were identified in general population studies. Other mutation carrier-specific susceptibility variants may exist but studies of mutation carriers have so far been underpowered. We conduct a novel case-only genome-wide association study comparing genotype frequencies between 60,212 general population BC cases and 13,007 cases with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. We identify robust novel associations for 2 variants with BC for BRCA1 and 3 for BRCA2 mutation carriers, P < 10-8, at 5 loci, which are not associated with risk in the general population. They include rs60882887 at 11p11.2 where MADD, SP11 and EIF1, genes previously implicated in BC biology, are predicted as potential targets. These findings will contribute towards customising BC polygenic risk scores for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers.Copyright © 2021, The Author(s).

Abstract: THESEUS is a medium size space mission of the European Space Agency, currently under evaluation for a possible launch in 2032. Its main objectives are to investigate the early Universe through the observation of gamma-ray bursts and to study the gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and neutrino events. On the other hand, its instruments, which include a wide field of view X-ray (0.3-5 keV) telescope based on lobster-eye focussing optics and a gamma-ray spectrometer with imaging capabilities in the 2-150 keV range, are also ideal for carrying out unprecedented studies in time domain astrophysics. In addition, the presence onboard of a 70 cm near infrared telescope will allow simultaneous multiwavelegth studies. Here we present the THESEUS capabilities for studying the time variability of different classes of sources in parallel to, and without affecting, the gamma-ray bursts hunt. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

Follow-up NICER observations have subsequently shown the presence of X-ray pulsations at 376 Hz (ATel #14124), confirming the neutron star nature of the compact object and identifying IGR J17494-3030 as an accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP).

The location of this object is consistent with the position of the known neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) and thermonuclear X-ray burster GRS 1741.9-2853.

Abstract: © 2019 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society Aql X-1 is one of the best-studied neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. It was previously targeted using quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray observations during at least seven different accretion outbursts. Such observations allow us to probe the interplay between accretion inflow (X-ray) and jet outflow (radio). Thus far, these combined observations have only covered one order of magnitude in radio and X-ray luminosity range; this means that any potential radio-X-ray luminosity correlation, LR ∝ LXβ, is not well constrained (β ≈ 0.4-0.9, based on various studies) or understood. Here we present quasi-simultaneous Very Large Array and Swift-XRT observations of Aql X-1's 2016 outburst, with which we probe one order of magnitude fainter in radio and X-ray luminosity compared to previous studies (6 × 1034 erg s−1 < LX <3 × 1035 erg s−1, i.e. the intermediate to low-luminosity regime between outburst peak and quiescence). The resulting radio non-detections indicate that Aql X-1's radio emission decays more rapidly at low X-ray luminosities than previously assumed - at least during the 2016 outburst. Assuming similar behaviour between outbursts, and combining all available data in the hard X-ray state, this can be modelled as a steep β =1.17+−003021 power-law index or as a sharp radio cut-off at LX ≲ 5 × 1035 erg s−1 (given our deep radio upper limits at X-ray luminosities below this value). We discuss these results in the context of other similar studies.

Early observations revealed that the source's radio emission is brighter than that of any other known neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS-LMXB) at comparable X-ray luminosity, and assuming its likely >~6 kpc distance. It is comparably radio bright to black hole LMXBs at similar X-ray luminosities. In this work, we present the results of our extensive radio and X-ray monitoring campaign of the 2018 outburst of IGR J17591-2342. In total, we collected 10 quasi-simultaneous radio (VLA, ATCA) and X-ray (Swift-XRT) observations, which make IGR J17591-2342 one of the best-sampled NS-LMXBs. We use these to fit a power-law correlation index β = 0.37+0.42-0.40 between observed radio and X-ray luminosities (LR α LXβ ). However, our monitoring revealed a large scatter in IGR J17591-2342's radio luminosity (at a similar X-ray luminosity, LX ~1036 erg s-1, and spectral state), with LR ~ 4 × 1029 erg s-1 during the first three reported observations, and up to a factor of 4 lower LR during later radio observations. None the less, the average radio luminosity of IGR J17591-2342 is still one of the highest among NS-LMXBs, and we discuss possible reasons for the wide range of radio luminosities observed in such systems during outburst.We found no evidence for radio pulsations from IGR J17591-2342 in our Green Bank Telescope observations performed shortly after the source returned to quiescence. None the less, we cannot rule out that IGR J17591-2342 becomes a radio millisecond pulsar during quiescence.

Abstract: We present results from six epochs of quasi-simultaneous radio, (sub-)millimetre, infrared, optical, and X-ray observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535−571. These observations show that as the source transitioned through the hard-intermediate X-ray state towards the soft-intermediate X-ray state, the jet underwent dramatic and rapid changes. We observed the frequency of the jet spectral break, which corresponds to the most compact region in the jet where particle acceleration begins (higher frequencies indicate closer to the black hole), evolves from the infrared band into the radio band (decreasing by ≈3 orders of magnitude) in less than a day. During one observational epoch, we found evidence of the jet spectral break evolving in frequency through the radio band. Estimating the magnetic field and size of the particle acceleration region shows that the rapid fading of the high-energy jet emission was not consistent with radiative cooling; instead, the particle acceleration region seems to be moving away from the black hole on approximately dynamical time-scales. This result suggests that the compact jet quenching is not caused by local changes to the particle acceleration, rather we are observing the acceleration region of the jet travelling away from the black hole with the jet flow. Spectral analysis of the X-ray emission shows a gradual softening in the few days before the dramatic jet changes, followed by a more rapid softening ∼1-2 d after the onset of the jet quenching.

Abstract: In 2017, the Be/X-ray transient 4U 0115+63 exhibited a new type II outburst that was two times fainter than its 2015 giant outburst (in the Swift/BAT count rates). Despite this difference between the two bright events, the source displayed similar X-ray behaviour after these periods. Once the outbursts ceased, the source did not transit towards quiescence directly, but was detected about a factor of 10 above its known quiescent level. It eventually decayed back to quiescence over timescales of months. In this paper, we present the results of our Swift monitoring campaign, and an XMM-Newton observation of 4U 0115+63 during the decay of the 2017 type II outburst and its subsequent low-luminosity behaviour. We discuss the possible origin of the decaying source emission at this low-level luminosity, which has now been shown as a recurrent phenomenon, in the framework of the two proposed scenarios to explain this faint state: cooling from an accretion-heated neutron star crust or continuous low-level accretion. In addition, we compare the outcome of our study with the results we obtained from the 2015/2016 monitoring campaign on this source.
