Witnessing the wide-reaching repercussions of the French and Industrial Revolutions, Auguste Comte and his British followers organised a concerted effort to answer 'the question of modern times,' the 'incorporation of the proletariat into modern society'. This dissertation presents the Positivists' different contributions to urban sociology as a collective response to this dual revolution. They endeavoured to see through the transformation of Western empires into a vast network of city-states or republics. The British Positivists developed an intellectually critical survey practice, and with this empirical evidence, they composed a series of republican planning programmes. With these comprehensive programmes, they aimed to ameliorate the proletariat by realising an alternative to global consumer culture, local environmental degradation and widespread indifference to public life. This dissertation traces the growth of the sociological survey alongside discussions of planning idyllic republican communities. It demonstrates how this Positivist theory and practice informed the rise of modern British town planning and city design. We will see that from the agitation of the 1830s, the historical and geographical surveys of Comte, and later Richard Congreve, tracked the links between domestic decline, militancy and contrived imperial unions. They devised policies to facilitate pacific international relations. Their intention was to expedite a moral urban revolution led by scientific and industrial institutions. From the 1860s social war between capital and labour, the industrial and social surveys of Frederic Harrison and Charles Booth fortified schemes for national regionalisation. With the opening of local government by the 1890s, the rustic and civic surveys of Patrick Geddes and Victor Branford aimed to bind town and country units into Garden City-states. By the 1920s they had outlined the basis for a 'higher art of polity-making' called 'City Design'. Effectively, this dissertation explores the Positivist roots of the modern British town planning and city design movement.

204. Working with Male Athletes: The Experiences of U.S. Female Head Coaches

- Abstract
Historically, men have dominated the athletic arena; as a result, the number of women in sport management positions has been limited (Cashmore, 2000; Coakley, 2010). Even rarer is the opportunity for female coaches to coach male sport teams. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of women who have coached male athletes. Six female head coaches who had coached or were currently coaching a men's team at the high school (n = 3), college (n = 2), or professional minor league (n =1) level were interviewed, and a cross-case analysis method was used for tagging data and determining themes. Five primary categories emerged: 1) participants had a diversified athletic history; 2) participants had a positive male coaching influence; 3) participants used an intense coaching philosophy; 4) participants felt support from family and athletic administrators; and 5) participants experienced gendering of the coaching role as masculine. Participants suggested that the lack of support systems, mentoring, and networking are the main reasons that the number of women coaching men is so low. Future research should focus on combating the social stigmas in sports administration and coaching. (Contains 2 figures.)

Purpose: There is uncertainty as to which anticoagulant should be used in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) with valvular heart disease. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) compared with warfarin in patients with non-valvular AF with valvular heart disease. Methods: We performed a comprehensive literature search using PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Clinicaltrials.gov from the inception of databases up until August 2, 2021, and the search was updated and finalized on October 17, 2021. The intervention group was DOACs and the control group was warfarin. The primary outcome was systemic embolism and stroke (SSE), and the secondary outcome was major bleeding and intracranial hemorrhage. The pooled effect estimate was reported as the hazard ratio (HR) and odds ratio (OR).Results: There were 21,185 patients from seven studies included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Stroke and systemic embolism were lower in patients receiving DOACs [HR 0.76 (95% CI 0.67, 0.87), p < 0.001; I2: 5%] compared with warfarin. The subgroup analysis on RCTs showed the significant reduction of SSE in the DOACs group [HR 0.73 (95% CI 0.60, 0.89), p = 0.002; I2: 16%]. There was no significant difference in terms of major bleeding [HR 0.89 (95% CI 0.75, 1.05), p = 0.18; I2: 69%]. Intracranial hemorrhage [HR 0.42 (95% CI 0.22, 0.80), p = 0.008; I2: 73%] were lower in the DOAC group. Conclusion: This meta-analysis indicates that DOACs were associated with a lower risk of SSE and intracranial hemorrhage compared with patients receiving warfarin. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of major bleeding.

217. Crowdsourcing and Self-Instruction: Turning the Production of Teaching Materials into a Learning Objective
- Author
-
Wilson, Matthew Charles
- Abstract
This article describes a lesson plan that harnessed students' abilities to generate new teaching material by constructing country timelines. This involved "crowdsourcing," or the reliance upon task inputs from a large number of people to acquire information. The plan was motivated by an approach that conceives of learning as deriving from the joint activity of individuals with shared tools, and was geared toward promoting self-instruction alongside traditional lectures and exams. By relying on independent research and individual contributions to create a new teaching resource, the course facilitated strategic reading and peer learning and promoted a research-active learning environment. The experience encourages instructors to consider ways to use distributed learning in the classroom to make students both the producers and consumers of innovative content.

218. Outside Engagement: Exploring the Utilization of Online Communication Tools in Face-to-Face Classes
- Author

Wilson, Matthew James
- Abstract
In today's higher education environment, institutions are looking to balance financial demands with the ability to offer high quality, practical courses in a variety of different modalities and times. Because of this new reality, institutions are increasingly relying on adjunct faculty to help bring about these modern educational demands. Colleges and universities are also looking to expand their technological investments to meet these growing demands. However, could the traditional faculty/student rapport outside of the classroom be left behind with the potential of affecting student satisfaction? With the growing use of adjunct faculty and the increase of technology available to faculty and students, implementing online communication tools could help to bridge the challenge of offering more faculty/student engagement outside of the classroom setting. This quantitative study looked at the baseline usage of online communication tools with adjunct faculty teaching face-to-face courses at a Mid-Atlantic University. The study will look at the impact of usage by faculty, completion of University sponsored trainings, as well as their experience with teaching fully online, as well as hybrid courses. 615.1 - Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to highlight the use of hot melt extrusion (HME) as a manufacturing process in the development of single and multi-dose, multi-layered solid oral dosage forms using celluloses to control drug release. Furthermore the ability of HME to be used as a technique to manufacture multi-layered tablets was analysed becoming cognisant of the factors that influence drug release from such systems. The impact of HME, polymer type, drug type, drug loading and tablet dimensions on the amount of drug released and the drug release mechanisms were defined and utilised to produce a clinically relevant fixed dose combination (FOG) that contained aspirin and simvastatin. Cellulose based formulations containing HPG, HPMG and MG were successfully manufactured using hot melt extrusion as a rapid continuous process for the production of solid oral dosage forms that offered sustained and controlled drug release. Furthermore, HME was successfully used to manufacture cellulose based single dose and fixed dose combination (FOC) multi-layer tablets. The application of layers reduced the surface area to volume (SA V) ratio of the drug layers, significantly affecting the amount of drug released, while polymer swelling characteristics were also identified as contributing factors that modulated drug release. The promising performance of the HME multi-layered cellulose based formulations at controlling drug release led to the design of a clinically relevant FOC that contained simvastatin and aspirin. The FOG had to sustain the release aspirin while delaying the release of simvastatin to when it is optimally effective, with less than 10% of maximum simvastatin release occurring before 2 hours. The combination of dissolution, mechanical and process analysis proved successful in the selection of candidate formulations and tablet designs. Results confirmed that 32.75% aspirin and 32.3% simvastatin were suitable formulations, and therefore progressed as candidate formulations for future testing beyond this study

370.15 - Abstract
This thesis explores the experiences of permanently excluded children and young people (CYP) from the perspective of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the concept of the Basic Psychological Needs (BPNs). CYP who had experienced permanent exclusion from school were interviewed in order to explore how their BPN for Autonomy, Competence and Relatedness were perceived to have been satisfied or limited across three contexts: previous mainstream provision, current provision and outside of school. A thematic analysis of transcribed interview data was conducted and the role of BPN satisfaction in relation to the experience of permanent exclusion was explored. The experiences and perspectives expressed by participants suggested a range of social-contextual supports and limitations for BPNs across contexts. In line with existing SDT-based research, the findings suggest that participants’ experiences of reduced engagement, motivation, performance and well-being were associated with situations, events and relationships which were perceived to be limiting to BPNs. Where BPNs were perceived to have been supported, participants’ responses indicated increased engagement, autonomous motivation, performance and wellbeing. The researcher suggests that further research into the BPN satisfaction in schools is needed, including further qualitative exploration of the experiences of our most vulnerable and hard to reach CYP. Possible implications for teacher training, school management and the delivery of Educational Psychology (EP) services are discussed.

- Abstract
There is a lack of consensus in the literature regarding optimal treatment methods for Lisfranc injuries, and recent literature has emphasized the need to compare open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with primary arthrodesis (PA). The purpose of the current study is to compare reoperation and complication rates between ORIF and PA following Lisfranc injury in a private, outpatient, orthopaedic practice. A retrospective chart review was performed on patients undergoing operative intervention for Lisfranc injury between January 2009 and September 2015. A total of 196 patients met the inclusion criteria (130 ORIF, 66 PA), with a mean follow-up of 61.3 and 81.7 weeks, respectively. The ORIF group had a higher reoperation rate than the PA group, due to hardware removal. When hardware removals were excluded, the reoperation rate was similar. Postsurgical complications were compared between the 2 groups with no significant difference. In conclusion, ORIF and PA had similar complication rates. When hardware removals were excluded, the reoperation rates were similar, although hardware removals were more common in the ORIF group compared with the PA group. Aim: Although proximal faecal diversion is standard of care to protect patients with high‐risk colorectal anastomoses against septic complications of anastomotic leakage, it is associated with significant morbidity. The Colovac device (CD) is an intraluminal bypass device intended to avoid stoma creation in patients undergoing low anterior resection. A preliminary study (SAFE‐1) completed in three European centres demonstrated 100% protection of colorectal anastomoses in 15 patients, as evidenced by the absence of faeces below the CD. This phase III trial (SAFE‐2) aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the CD in a larger cohort of patients undergoing curative rectal cancer resection. Methods: SAFE‐2 is a pivotal, multicentre, prospective, open‐label, randomized, controlled trial. Patients will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to either the CD arm or the diverting loop ileostomy arm, with a recruitment target of 342 patients. The co‐primary endpoints are the occurrence of major postoperative complications within 12 months of index surgery and the effectiveness of the CD in reducing stoma creation rates. Data regarding quality of life and patient's acceptance and tolerance of the device will be collected. Discussion: SAFE‐2 is a multicentre randomized, control trial assessing the efficacy and the safety of the CD in protecting low colorectal anastomoses created during oncological resection relative to standard diverting loop ileostomy. Trial registration: NCT05010850. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Prompt diagnosis of lymphoma facilitates early treatment and improves outcomes for patients. For non-haemato-oncologists, it is important to have an understanding of how lymphoma can present and the initial work-up. This review is intended to provide clinicians with background to aid clinical decisional making at presentation and when managing treatment related complications. There will be particular emphasis on emergency presentations (tumour lysis syndrome, management of patients with a mediastinal mass, infections in lymphoma patients) and novel treatment options which have unique toxicities often requiring multi-specialty expertise. - Abstract
High-speed wide-field fluorescence microscopy has the potential to capture biological processes with exceptional spatiotemporal resolution. However, conventional cameras suffer from low signal-to-noise ratio at high frame rates, limiting their ability to detect faint fluorescent events. Here, we introduce an image sensor where each pixel has individually programmable sampling speed and phase, so that pixels can be arranged to simultaneously sample at high speed with a high signal-to-noise ratio. In high-speed voltage imaging experiments, our image sensor significantly increases the output signal-to-noise ratio compared to a low-noise scientific CMOS camera (~2–3 folds). This signal-tonoise ratio gain enables the detection of weak neuronal action potentials and subthreshold activities missed by the standard scientific CMOS cameras. Our camera with flexible pixel exposure configurations offers versatile sampling strategies to improve signal quality in various experimental conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we developed a XGBoost-based algorithm to downscale 2 km-resolution land surface temperature (LST) data from the GOES satellite to a finer 70 m resolution, using ancillary variables including NDVI, NDBI, and DEM. This method demonstrated a superior performance over the conventional TsHARP technique, achieving a reduced RMSE of 1.90 °C, compared to 2.51 °C with TsHARP. Our approach utilizes the geostationary GOES satellite data alongside high-resolution ECOSTRESS data, enabling hourly LST downscaling to 70 m—a significant advancement over previous methodologies that typically measure LST only once daily. Applying these high-resolution LST data, we examined the hottest days in Chicago and their correlation with ethnic inequality. Our analysis indicated that Hispanic/Latino communities endure the highest LSTs, with a maximum LST that is 1.5 °C higher in blocks predominantly inhabited by Hispanic/Latino residents compared to those predominantly occupied by White residents. This study highlights the intersection of urban development, ethnic inequality, and environmental inequities, emphasizing the need for targeted urban planning to mitigate these disparities. The enhanced spatial and temporal resolution of our LST data provides deeper insights into diurnal temperature variations, crucial for understanding and addressing the urban heat distribution and its impact on vulnerable communities.
