207. The role of psychological distress in the relationship between lifestyle and compulsivity: An analysis of independent, bi-national samples

Abstract

AbstractBackgroundPoor mental health is a state of psychological distress that is influenced by lifestyle factors such as sleep, diet, and physical activity. Compulsivity is a transdiagnostic phenotype cutting across a range of mental illnesses including obsessive–compulsive disorder, substance-related and addictive disorders, and is also influenced by lifestyle. Yet, how lifestyle relates to compulsivity is presently unknown, but important to understand to gain insights into individual differences in mental health. We assessed (a) the relationships between compulsivity and diet quality, sleep quality, and physical activity, and (b) whether psychological distress statistically contributes to these relationships.MethodsWe collected harmonized data on compulsivity, psychological distress, and lifestyle from two independent samples (Australian n = 880 and US n = 829). We used mediation analyses to investigate bidirectional relationships between compulsivity and lifestyle factors, and the role of psychological distress.ResultsHigher compulsivity was significantly related to poorer diet and sleep. Psychological distress statistically mediated the relationship between poorer sleep quality and higher compulsivity, and partially statistically mediated the relationship between poorer diet and higher compulsivity.ConclusionsLifestyle interventions in compulsivity may target psychological distress in the first instance, followed by sleep and diet quality. As psychological distress links aspects of lifestyle and compulsivity, focusing on mitigating and managing distress may offer a useful therapeutic approach to improve physical and mental health. Future research may focus on the specific sleep and diet patterns which may alter compulsivity over time to inform lifestyle targets for prevention and treatment of functionally impairing compulsive behaviors.

Abstract

Fiber Bragg Izgaralar (FBG) yaklaşık 1 cm boyutlara sahip olup, klasik tek modlu fibere kolaylıkla bağlanabilirler. Hassas olmalarına rağmen dış ortam koruma tasarımları ile her türlü ortama kolaylıkla monte edilebilirler. Sıcaklık ve gerilme gibi fiziksel büyüklüklerin değişimleri, doğrusal olarak FBG’lerin merkez dalgaboylarında değişime sebep olmaktadır. FBG algılama sistemlerinde, yansıyan sinyalin merkez dalgaboyunun tespiti en önemli araştırma konularından biri olmaktadır. FBG’nin merkez dalgaboyunun tespiti için farklı yaklaşımlar üzerinde çalışılmakla birlikte, en yaygın yaklaşım sinyalin en yüksek güç değerine karşılık gelen dalgaboyunun merkez dalgaboyu olarak kabul edilmesi yaklaşımıdır. Bu en yüksek güç değerine sahip dalgaboyunu tespit etmek için de farklı yöntemler kullanılmaktadır. Bu yöntemler içerisinde en kararlı sonuç veren yöntem ise Gaussian uyarlama yöntemidir. Bu çalışmada sıcaklık değişimine karşılık FBG’nin merkez dalgaboyunun tespiti için Gaussian uyarlama yöntemi teorik ve deneysel olarak incelenmiştir. Sonuç olarak 5 FBG dizinden sıcaklık ölçümü alınarak, anlamlandırılmış ve sıcaklık algılama sistemi gerçekleştirilmiştir., Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) are approximately 1 cm in size and can easily be connected to conventional single-mode fiber. Although they are sensitive, they can be easily installed in any environment with their outdoor protection designs. Changes in physical sizes such as temperature and stress cause linear changes in FBG's central wavelengths. In FBG sensing systems, the detection of the central wavelength of the reflected signal is one of the most important research subjects. Although different approaches have been studied for the determination of the central wavelength of FBG, the most common approach is to accept the wavelength corresponding to the highest power value of the signal as central wavelength. Several techniques are used to determine the wavelenght with this highest power value. The most stable method among these methods is the Gaussian fitting method. In this study, the Gaussian fitting method for the determination of the central wavelength of FBG in response to temperature changes has been theoretically and experimentally examined. As a result, the temperature measurement was taken from 5 FBG arrays, the signals were processed, and the temperature detection system was realized.

Abstract

In this paper, we develop a new method of decision-making algorithm with Hausdorff distance and Hausdorff similarity measures based on generalized set-valued neutrosophic quadruple numbers. To establish the algorithm, we define Hausdorff distance measure and Hausdorff similarity measure on generalized setvalued neutrosophic quadruple. Next, we give a new method of decision-making application for impact of online learning on the learner. Also, we obtain different result from some previous applications (based on neutrosophic sets) for decision making algorithm. Thanks to our decision-making algorithm and similarity measure, researchers can obtain new applications for other decision making problems.

Abstract

Males and females show different patterns of cannabis use and related psychosocial outcomes. However, the neuroanatomical substrates underlying such differences are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to map sex differences in the neurobiology (as indexed by brain volumes) of dependent and recreational cannabis use. We compared the volume of a priori regions of interest (i.e., amygdala, hippocampus, nucleus accumbens, insula, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), anterior cingulate cortex and cerebellum) between 129 regular cannabis users (of whom 70 were recreational users and 59 cannabis dependent) and 114 controls recruited from the ENIGMA Addiction Working Group, accounting for intracranial volume, age, IQ, and alcohol and tobacco use. Dependent cannabis users, particularly females, had (marginally significant) smaller volumes of the lateral OFC and cerebellar white matter than recreational users and controls. In dependent (but not recreational) cannabis users, there was a significant association between female sex and smaller volumes of the cerebellar white matter and OFC. Volume of the OFC was also predicted by monthly standard drinks. No significant effects emerged the other brain regions of interest. Our findings warrant future multimodal studies that examine if sex and cannabis dependence are specific key drivers of neurobiological alterations in cannabis users. This, in turn, could help to identify neural pathways specifically involved in vulnerable cannabis users (e.g., females with cannabis dependence) and inform individually tailored neurobiological targets for treatment.

Abstract

Gender-related differences in the susceptibility, progression and clinical outcomes of alcohol dependence are well-known. However, the neurobiological substrates underlying such differences remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate gender differences in the neuroanatomy (i.e. regional brain volumes) of alcohol dependence. We examined the volume of a priori regions of interest (i.e., orbitofrontal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, caudate, putamen, pallidum, thalamus, corpus callosum, cerebellum) and global brain measures (i.e., total grey matter (GM), total white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fluid). Volumes were compared between 660 people with alcohol dependence (228 women) and 326 controls (99 women) recruited from the ENIGMA Addiction Working Group, accounting for intracranial volume, age and education years. Compared to controls, individuals with alcohol dependence on average had (3-9%) smaller volumes of the hippocampus (bilateral), putamen (left), pallidum (left), thalamus (right), corpus callosum, total GM and WM, and cerebellar GM (bilateral), the latter more prominently in women (right). Alcohol-dependent men showed smaller amygdala volume than control men, but this effect was unclear among women. In people with alcohol dependence, more monthly standard drinks predicted smaller amygdala and larger cerebellum GM volumes. The neuroanatomical differences associated with alcohol dependence emerged as gross and widespread, while those associated with a specific gender may be confined to selected brain regions. These findings warrant future neuroscience research to account for gender differences in alcohol dependence to further understand the neurobiological effects of alcohol dependence.

Abstract

Brain asymmetry reflects left-right hemispheric differentiation, which is a quantitative brain phenotype that develops with age and can vary with psychiatric diagnoses. Previous studies have shown that substance dependence is associated with altered brain structure and function. However, it is unknown whether structural brain asymmetries are different in individuals with substance dependence compared with nondependent participants. Here, a mega-analysis was performed using a collection of 22 structural brain MRI datasets from the ENIGMA Addiction Working Group. Structural asymmetries of cortical and subcortical regions were compared between individuals who were dependent on alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, methamphetamine, or cannabis (n = 1,796) and nondependent participants (n = 996). Substance-general and substance-specific effects on structural asymmetry were examined using separate models. We found that substance dependence was significantly associated with differences in volume asymmetry of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc; less rightward; Cohen's d = 0.15). This effect was driven by differences from controls in individuals with alcohol dependence (less rightward; Cohen's d = 0.10) and nicotine dependence (less rightward; Cohen's d = 0.11). These findings suggest that disrupted structural asymmetry in the NAcc may be a characteristic of substance dependence.

Abstract

Background: Existing research has demonstrated that intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is associated with problematic smartphone use (PSU). However, little is known about how different IU components such as uncertainty-related beliefs, emotions, and behaviors may impact on different PSU symptoms. Methods: Extending previous research, the current study examined the specific associations between IU components and PSU symptoms via a symptom-level network approach. A regularized partial correlation network consisting of different IU components and PSU symptoms was estimated among 1,849 Chinese university students. We examined pathways and influential nodes (i.e. central components/symptoms and bridge components/symptoms) within the IU-PSU network. Results: The strongest pathway linking IU and PSU was between emotional reactions to uncertainty and coping-motivated smartphone use. Importantly, emotional reactions toward not having enough information (a reflection of emotional reactions to uncertainty) may act as both a central and a bridge component in maintaining the whole IUPSU network. Conclusions: The results are in line with the I-PACE model and highlight that PSU may be a coping response for negative emotions derived from uncertainty. Finally, the current findings highlight the potential of interventions targeting intolerance of uncertainty for reducing PSU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
