Today, postsecondary institutions in the US typically wish to enroll entering classes that are both academically qualified and diverse. Although the definition of diversity varies from school to school, the challenge is essentially the same: How can academic objectives be combined with goals that involve the composition of the entering class? Many schools have a commitment to facilitating access for under-represented minorities or low-income applicants, or for members of nearby communities. Incorporating these goals while maintaining academic standards can be challenging.

On March 1 and 2, 2018, the National Institutes of Health 2018 Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium, Cardiovascular Bioengineering Symposium, was held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Convergence of life sciences and engineering to advance the understanding and treatment of heart failure was the theme of the meeting. Over 150 attendees were present, and >40 scientists presented their latest work on engineering human functional myocardium for disease modeling, drug development, and heart failure research. The scientists, engineers, and physicians in the field of cardiovascular sciences met and discussed the most recent advances in their work and proposed future strategies for overcoming the major roadblocks of cardiovascular bioengineering and therapy. Particular emphasis was given for manipulation and using of stem/progenitor cells, biomaterials, and methods to provide molecular, chemical, and mechanical cues to cells to influence their identity and fate in vitro and in vivo. Collectively, these works are profoundly impacting and progressing toward deciphering the mechanisms and developing novel treatments for left ventricular dysfunction of failing hearts. Here, we present some important perspectives that emerged from this meeting.

The airworthiness development status of civil aircraft in China was taken as the starting point of review. The airworthiness alternative methods of compliance method of the materials used in civil aircraft products were sorted out, and the relevant provisions requirements of materials used in civil aircraft products such as civil aircraft, engines and helicopters in China’s civil airworthiness regulations were analysed. In the process of materials airworthiness conformity verification, the establishment of standards (specifications) based on statistical analysis is the core of material conformity verification. MOC1, MOC2, MOC4 methods are mainly used to verify airworthiness conformity of materials approved with the model. Facing the future, the application of materials with independent intellectual property rights, the construction of materials independent verification technology and capacity are the key to realize the industrialization development of advanced civil aircraft.

The self-assembly of molecular knots in water is challenging. Here, authors report the self-assembly of a trefoil knot in water via imine condensation, without relying on external templates; the handedness of the trefoil knot is determined by the chirality of the bisamino precursor.

The community detection algorithm is very important for analyzing the topology and hierarchical structure of complex networks and predicting the evolution trend of complex networks.Traditional community detection algorithm does not have high accuracy and ignores the importance of network embedding.Aiming at such problems,a parameter-free community detection algorithm based on node similarity and network embedding Node2Vec method is proposed.First,we use the network embedding Node2Vec method to map network nodes into data points represented by low-dimensional vectors in Euclidean space,calculate the cosine similarity between the data points represented by the low-dimensional vector,construct a preference network according to the maximum similarity between the corresponding nodes,obtain the initial community detection,and use the maximum degree node of each initial community as a candidate node.Then we find the central node among the candidate nodes according to the average degree of the network and the average shortest path.Finally,the data points and their numbers corresponding to the central node are used as the initial centroid and cluster number,and the data represented by the low-dimensional vector are calculated by K-Means algorithm.The points are clustered,and the corresponding network nodes are divided into communities.This algorithm is a method of community division without parameters,which can independently extract parameters from the network without setting different hyper-parameters according to different networks,so that it can automatically and quickly identify the community structure of complex networks.In 8 real networks and artificial networks above,by comparing with other 5 well-known community discovery algorithms,numerical simulation experiments show that the proposed algorithm has good community discovery effect.

Purpose Numerous studies claim that Taekwondo can effectively help obese children improve their physical fitness. In addition, Taekwondo might help prevent lifestyle diseases and metabolic syndrome caused by obesity. However, studies and reviews on the effectiveness of Taekwondo Poomsae are very few compared to those on Taekwondo Kyorugi. Based on previous reviews, this study aims to clarify the effect of Taekwondo Poomsae training on improving body composition, physical fitness, and blood composition of children and adolescents of different groups. Furthermore, the applicability of Taekwondo Poomsae training is to be determined. Methods Two-hundred and two studies were searched via Korea electronic databases RISS, KISS, and DBPIA from March 1 to 3, 2021, and 22 of these were included in this review. Results Our review confirms that Taekwondo Poomsae is effective in improving the physical condition of developing children and adolescents. However, we cannot assert that this sport is also an effective exercise therapy for special youth groups, such as those who are overweight, obese, or have a metabolic growth or development syndrome. Conclusions We suggest that sports implementers, Taekwando experts, coaches, and other sport professionals provide more Taekwondo Poomsae training programs suitable for physical and physiotherapeutic exercises for different ages and groups.

The sublayer thickness of superlattices, as a key factor affecting lattice integrity, interface defects, and strain, deserves in-depth studies about its impact on improving ferroelectric properties. This study described and analyzed the performance of HfO2/ZrO2 superlattices with various sublayer thicknesses. It can be concluded that the structure of the thicker layers will guide the trend of the phase composition of the entire device: when ZrO2 layers are thicker, the superlattices will exhibit antiferroelectricity due to the higher content of the tetragonal phase (t-phase); when HfO2 layers become thicker, the fraction of the monoclinic phase (m-phase) will increase, leading to a decrease in ferroelectricity and an increase in leakage current. In this way, the device with a 1:1 HfO2/ZrO2 thickness ratio was optimized to have the largest remanent polarization and the lowest leakage current. Maintaining the same thickness ratio of the HfO2/ZrO2 superlattices, it was found that HfO2/ZrO2 superlattices with thinner sublayers exhibited a larger remanent polarization (Pr) value due to increased interlayer distortion. On the contrary, the thicker sublayers reduced leakage current, which was beneficial for improving the device lifespan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies have demonstrated that when the cyclin D2 (CCND2), a cell-cycle regulatory protein, is overexpressed in human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), cardiomyocytes (CMs) differentiated from these CCND2-overexpressing hiPSCs can proliferate after transplantation into infarcted hearts, which significantly improves the cells' potency for myocardial regeneration. However, persistent CM proliferation could lead to tumor growth or the development of arrhythmogenic complications; thus, the goal of the current study was to generate a line of hiPSCs in which CCND2 overexpression could be tightly controlled. First, we transfected hiPSCs with vectors coding for a doxycycline-inducible Tet-On transactivator and S. pyogenes dCas9 fused to the VPR activation domain; then, the same hiPSCs were engineered to express guide RNAs targeting the CCND2 promotor. Thus, treatment with doxycycline (dox) activated dCas9-VPR expression, and the guide RNAs directed dCas9-VPR to the CCND2 promoter, which activated CCND2 expression. Subsequent experiments confirmed that CCND2 expression was dox-dependent in this newly engineered line of hiPSCs (doxCCND2-hiPSCs): CCND2 protein was abundantly expressed after 48 h of treatment with dox and declined to near baseline level ~96 h after dox treatment was discontinued. Ultrasound is widely applied in diverse domains, such as medical imaging, non-destructive evaluation, and acoustic communication. Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs) capable of generating and receiving ultrasonic signals at the micrometer level have become a prominent technology in the field of ultrasound. It is important to enrich the models of the PMUTs to meet the varied applications. In this study, a series of PMUT devices featured with various top electrode configurations, square, circular, and doughnut, were designed to assess the influence of shape on the emission efficacy. It was demonstrated that the PMUTs with a circular top electrode were outperformed, which was calculated from the external acoustic pressure produced by the PMUTs operating in the fundamental resonant mode at a specified distance. Furthermore, the superior performance of PMUT arrays were exhibited through computational simulations for the circular top electrode geometries. Conventional microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) techniques were used to fabricate an array of PMUTs based on aluminum nitride (AlN) films. These findings make great contributions for enhancing the signal transmission sensitivity and bandwidth of PMUTs, which have significant potential in non-destructive testing and medical imaging applications. A strained triple nanohoop with a shared central benzene unit is synthesized using a threefold intramolecular ring‐closing approach. Among the five possible constitutional isomers, the isomer with the highest D3h symmetry is isolated, the structure of which contains three nanohoop blades and a central hexaphenylbenzene unit. The structure is elucidated using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The optical and electrochemical properties are investigated, revealing a moderate fluorescence quantum yield of 40 %. A water‐soluble nanomaterial is prepared using a nanoparticle encapsulation method, and a fluorescence quantum yield of 10 % is retained, which demonstrates the potential of the nanomaterial in biological systems. The aim Methods Results Conclusion To explore and describe workplace stress levels and health‐promoting behaviours reported by emergency nurses in China, and to investigate factors associated with workplace stress and health‐promoting lifestyle behaviours among emergency nurses.A cross‐sectional study was conducted between October 2019 and January 2020. Nurses (n = 1565) were recruited from the emergency departments of 54 hospitals within the Sichuan Province of West China. Each subject completed the Chinese versions of the Nurse Workplace Stress Scale, the Health‐Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP‐II) and demographic questions. Linear regression analyses were used to identify associations between workplace stress and the health‐promoting lifestyle and risk factors correlated with these two measurements.Workplace stress was negatively associated with health‐promoting behaviours. Linear regression analysis showed that gender, marital status, whether wages met expected standards and professional rank were found to be associated with health promotion behaviours; marital status, whether income met expected standards, the number of night shifts per month and health promotion behaviours were found to be associated with workplace stress.Higher levels of workplace stress are associated with lower levels of engagement in health‐promoting behaviours, suggesting the potential for reducing workplace stress through the adoption of healthier habits.
