Abstract With the serious shortage of water resources and the development of water-saving agriculture, the application of drip irrigation has been paid more and more attention. But there was lack of oat planting methods suitable for drip irrigation, currently. In order to establish an efficient oat planting method for drip irrigation, a study was conducted at Agriculture and Forestry Sciences of Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia during the season (2019–2020) to evaluate the effect of strip cropping with reducing row spacing and super absorbent polymer on the yield and water use efficiency of oat. To conduct the field trials, a split plot system in three replications was established. Three planting patterns were in the main plots, including conventional cropping with 20 cm equal row spacing (PA), strip cropping with the 15 cm row spacing (PB) and strip cropping with the 10 cm row spacing (PC), and two super absorbent polymer levels were in the subplots, including 22.5 kg ha−2 (Y) and 0 (N). The results showed that, compared with PA, PB and PC both decreased the irrigation volumes by 4.5–18.4 mm, and the irrigation volumes of PB was lower than that of PC. When super absorbent polymers were applied, compared with PA, PB significantly increased grain yield and above-ground biomass, but PC had the opposite effects. The grain yield and above-ground biomass of PB significantly increased by 16.65% and 7.31% on average in two years, respectively. And the increasing of grain yield was attributed by the significant increasing of pike number and kernel number per spike. But when super absorbent polymers were not applied, PB had no significant effects on grain yield and above-ground biomass. PB also had the significant effects on regulating water use of oats weather or not super absorbent polymers were applied, it significantly increased the precipitation ratio by 2.64% (PBY) and 2.13% (PBN) and decreased irrigation ration by 3.32% (PBY) and 5.28% (PBN) on average in two years. Although PB and PC both decreased the total evapotranspiration, but PB increased WUE and PC deceased WUE. The WUE of PB increased by 19.70% (PBY) and 9.87% (PBN) on average in two years. Also PB had the highest economic benefits in all treatments. In conclusion, a drip irrigation oat planting pattern was proposed, which the row spacing is 15 cm, adjusted the equal row spacing planting to 8-row strip planting, with a belt spacing of 30 cm, combined with the application of 22.5 kg ha−2 applying super absorbent polymers. And this oat planting pattern is a viable strategy to improve oat productivity.

Abstract Objective Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is a severe complication in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who underwent hepatectomy. This study aims to develop a nomogram of PHLF grade B–C in patients with huge HCC (diameter ≥ 10 cm). Methods We retrospectively collected clinical information of 514 and 97 patients who underwent hepatectomy for huge HCC at two medical centers between 2016 and 2021. Univariate and multivariate analysis were carried out to screen the independent risk factors of PHLF grade B–C, which were visualized as a nomogram. Abstract Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common among hospitalized children and is associated with a poor prognosis. The study sought to develop machine learning-based models for predicting adverse outcomes among hospitalized AKI children. We performed a retrospective study of hospitalized AKI patients aged 1 month to 18 years in the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in China from 2015 to 2020. The primary outcomes included major adverse kidney events within 30 days (MAKE30) (death, new renal replacement therapy, and persistent renal dysfunction) and 90-day adverse outcomes (chronic dialysis and death). The state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and the traditional logistic regression were used to establish prediction models for MAKE30 and 90-day adverse outcomes. The models’ performance was evaluated by split-set test. A total of 1394 pediatric AKI patients were included in the study. The incidence of MAKE30 and 90-day adverse outcomes was 24.1% and 8.1%, respectively. In the test set, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the XGBoost model was 0.810 (95% CI 0.763–0.857) for MAKE30 and 0.851 (95% CI 0.785–0.916) for 90-day adverse outcomes, The AUC of the logistic regression model was 0.786 (95% CI 0.731–0.841) for MAKE30 and 0.759 (95% CI 0.654–0.864) for 90-day adverse outcomes. A web-based risk calculator can facilitate the application of the XGBoost models in daily clinical practice. In conclusion, XGBoost showed good performance in predicting MAKE30 and 90-day adverse outcomes, which provided clinicians with useful tools for prognostic assessment in hospitalized AKI children.

Background: Predicting the efficacy of immune-based therapy in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a clinical challenge. This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in forecasting treatment response and survival outcomes for HCC patients undergoing immune-based therapy. Methods: We analyzed a cohort of 268 HCC patients treated with immune-based therapy from January 2019 to March 2023. A training cohort of 93 patients received atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (T + A), while a validation cohort of 175 patients underwent treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) combined with anti-PD-(L)1 therapy. The SII cutoff value, determined using X-tile analysis based on overall survival (OS) in the training cohort, divided patients into high (> 752*109) and low (≤ 752*109) SII groups. Prognostic factors were identified through univariate and multivariate logistic and Cox regression analyses, and survival outcomes were assessed using Kaplan–Meier methods. The predictive accuracy of SII was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: An optimal SII cutoff of 752*109 stratified patients into high and low SII groups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression indicated that SII was a significant predictor of the objective response rate (ORR), which was markedly different between the low and high SII subgroups (34.72% vs. 9.52%, P = 0.019). This finding was consistent in the validation cohort (34.09% vs. 16.28%, P = 0.026). SII also demonstrated prognostic value in Cox regression and Kaplan–Meier analyses. ROC curves confirmed that SII had superior predictive accuracy compared to common clinical indicators, with predictive relevance even in AFP-negative patients. Furthermore, a lower SII was associated with a higher T cell ratio and an increased number of CD8+ T cells and Granzyme B+ CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood. Conclusion: SII is a promising predictor of both therapeutic efficacy and prognosis in HCC patients undergoing immune-based treatments. One of the major problem in the cultivation of sugar beets is continuous cropping obstacle in China. In order to evaluate the effects of continuous cropping year on the photosynthetic performance, dry matter accumulation, and distribution of sugar beet, this study was conducted in the 2020–2021 crop season at the Agriculture and Forestry Sciences of Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia. A split plot system arrangement with three replications was set up to carry out the field testing. The main plots had five planting years, with the a first cropping of each growing season serving as the control (CK) and four continuous cropping treatments for one, two, three, and four years (designated as C1, C2, C3, and C4, respectively). The subplot consisted of two fertilization treatments designated as 0 kg ha−1 bio-organic fertilization (N) and 6000 kg ha−1 bio-organic fertilization (Y). The findings demonstrated that the continuous cropping impeded sugar beet photosynthesis as well as the accumulation and dispersion of the dry matter in leaf, petiole, and root. The intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), and SPAD value were dramatically dropped as the number of continuous cropping years increased under the crop. Compared with CK, the SPAD value, Pn, Ci, Tr, Gs of continuous cropping treatments were significantly reduced by an average of 10.09–48.21%, 14.60–43.19%, 12.00–42.86%, 7.77–43.83%, 9.61–37.68%, respectively. The dry matter accumulation of leaf, petiole, root, and the whole plant were also reduced by 11.86–49.61%, 9.58–44.77%, 17.26–53.76%, and 10.62–49.79%, respectively. With the increasing of continuous cropping year, the growth of sugar beet was significantly inhibited. Study revealed that continuous cropping had an impact on the distribution of dry matter accumulation of sugar beet; it considerably raised the dry matter ratio above ground, lowered the dry matter ratio below ground, and prevented dry matter from moving from aboveground towards root, whitch caused a decline in sugar beet root production and disturbed the root shoot ratio. Compared with CK, the root shoot ratio significantly decreased by 3.62–19.76%. Under continuous cropping stystem, the application of bio-organic fertilizer had an effect on promoting the photosynthesis of sugar beet, and regulating the distribution and transport of dry matter. The effects of bio-organic fertilizer were significantly under continuous cropping for 1–2 years. Compared with C1N and C2N, the Pn, Ci, Tr, Gs of C1Y and C2Y were significantly increased by 12.79–22.50%, 14.76–16.47%, 4.76–13.08%, 8.51–12.70%, and 13.69–18.91%, 12.17–14.60%, 5.71–15.14%, 7.58–15.41%, respectively. Dry matter accumulation of leaf, petiole, root, whole plant were significantly increased by 8.32–16.18%, 10.80–13.33%, 14.93–20.13%, 14.12–15.43%, and 10.65–15.32%, 6.58–15.63%, 15.37–20.94%, 12.68–16.85%, respectively. Nonetheless, the root shoot ratio increased by 4.58–8.56% and 4.52–7.35%. Above all, Under continuous cropping conditions, the application of 6000 kg ha−1 bio-organic fertilizer could effectively promote the photosynthesis of sugar beet, and better regulate the distribution and transport of dry matter of sugar beet. Glycerol kinase (GK) participates in triglyceride (TG) synthesis by catalyzing glycerol metabolism. Whether GK contributes to nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is unclear. The expression of hepatic Gk is found to be increased in diet‐induced and genetic mouse models of NAFL and is positively associated with hepatic SREBP‐1c expression and TG levels. Cholesterol and fatty acids stimulate GK expression in hepatocytes. In HFD‐induced NAFL mice, knockdown of hepatic Gk decreases expression of SREBP‐1c and its target lipogenic genes as well as DGAT1/2, increases serum glycerol levels, decreases serum TG levels, and attenuates hepatic TG accumulation. Overexpression of GK in hepatocytes in mice or in culture produces opposite results. Mechanistic studies reveal that GK stimulates SREBP‐1c transcription directly by binding to its gene promoter and indirectly by binding to SREBP‐1c protein, thereby increasing lipogenic gene expression and de novo lipogenesis. Studies with truncated GK and mutant GKs indicate that GK induces SREBP‐1c transcription independently of its enzyme activity. GK contributes to lipid homeostasis under physiological conditions by catalyzing glycerol metabolism rather than by regulating SREBP‐1c transcription. Collectively, these results demonstrate that increased hepatic GK promotes de novo lipogenesis and TG synthesis in NAFL by stimulating SREBP‐1c transcription and DGAT1/2 expression and catalyzing glycerol metabolism. Acylcarnitine (ACar) is a novel fuel source for activating thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT). However, whether ACar metabolism underlies BAT thermogenesis decline with aging remain unclear. Here, the L‐carnitine‐treated young and aging mice were used to investigate the effects of activation of ACar metabolism on BAT thermogenesis during aging. We showed that long term L‐carnitine feeding, which results in an elevation in circulating ACar levels, failed to improve cold sensitivity of aging mice, which still displayed impaired thermogenesis and ACar metabolism in interscapular BAT (iBAT). The RNA‐sequencing was used to identify the key regulator for the response of aging mice to LCar induced activation of ACar metabolism in BAT, and we identified Sirt3 as a key regulator for the response of aging mice to L‐carnitine induced activation of ACar metabolism in iBAT. Then the adipose‐specific Sirt3 knockout (Sirt3 AKO) mice were used to investigate the role of Sirt3 in ACar metabolism and thermogenesis of BAT and explore the underlying mechanism, and the results showed that Sirt3 AKO mice displayed defective ACar metabolism and thermogenesis in iBAT. Mechanically, Sirt3 regulated ACar metabolism via HIF1α‐PPARα signaling pathway to promote iBAT thermogenesis, and knockdown or inhibition of HIF1α ameliorated impaired ACar metabolism and thermogenesis of iBAT in the absence of Sirt3. Collectively, we propose that Sirt3 regulated ACar metabolism is critical in maintaining thermogenesis in BAT of aging mice, which can promote the development of anti‐aging intervention strategy. Abstract Background Cognitive impairment is one of the primary sequelae affecting the quality of life of patients with Japanese encephalitis (JE). The clinical treatment is mainly focused on life support, lacking of targeted treatment strategy. Methods A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomic profiling study was performed including 26 patients with JE in Gansu province of China from June 2017 to October 2018 and 33 other concurrent hospitalized patients who were excluded central nervous system (CNS) organic or CNS infection diseases. The clinical and proteomics data of patients with JE were undergoing combined analysis for the first time. Results Two subtypes of JE associated with significantly different prognoses were identified. Compared to JE1, the JE2 subtype is associated with lower overall survival rate and a higher risk of cognitive impairment. The percentages of neutrophils (N%), lymphocyte (L%), and monocytes (M%) decreased in JE2 significantly. Conclusions The differences in proteomic landscape between JE subgroups have specificity for the prognosis of cognitive impairment. The data also provided some potential target proteins for treatment of cognitive impairments caused by JE. Trial registration ChiCTR, ChiCTR2000030499. Abstract Thrombocytopenia is a condition where the platelet count is under 100 × 109/L, which is caused by various disorders. However, the mechanism of thrombocytopenia is still unclear. Hence, we tried to investigate the correlation between immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of genes related to T cell activation. There were 32 ITP patients and 30 healthy controls enrolled in this study. PCR and sequencing were used to find out the significant SNPs, which we focused on the promoter region of CTLA4 and CD28. In this study, the ITP cases were divided into primary ITP group, secondary ITP group, and the combination of the two to the follow-up analysis. Moreover, dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to evaluate the transcription activity of the significant SNP. We found the − 1765_rs11571315 of CTLA4 gene was associated with primary ITP (p = 0.006), secondary ITP (p = 0.008), and the combination of the two (p = 0.003). Moreover, the −318_rs5742909 also had statistical significance in secondary ITP group that was only caused by autoimmune disease (p = 0.019). In functional study, the rs5742909 would decrease 19% of the transcription activity when it carried a T-allele at this position (p = 0.040). It was noted that CTLA4 gene polymorphism was related to ITP but not CD28. According to our results, we surmised that CTLA4 is involved in the pathogenesis of ITP, and the secondary ITP result from the lower CTLA4 expression that leads to T cell over-activation.

Background To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of the modified technique utilizing the occipital bicortical screws and plate system in occipitocervical revision surgery. Methods Between October 2010 and May 2018, 12 consecutive patients were retrospectively evaluated. All patients had posterior occipitocervical resurgery utilizing modified technique of bicortical screws and occipital plate. The measurements of extracranial occiput on midline were conducted on computed tomography (CT) scans. The thickness of the occipital bone at the location of external occipital protuberance and below 15 mm were evaluated, respectively. For the procedure, the trajectory was drilled perpendicular to the external occipital protuberance for the specified depth with a depth‐limited drilling, 2 mm away from the internal bone plate, then the trajectory was deepened at intervals of 1 mm each time until reaching the internal bone plate. Meanwhile, a probe was used to explore all the walls of the trajectory. Bicortical screws were inserted to the occipital plate and the depth of penetration was less than 2 mm from the internal bone plate. Clinical efficacy and radiographic evaluation were followed up. Results The thickest point was the external occipital protuberance, which was 15.49 ± 1.47 mm and decreased gradually on the midline to 13.41 ± 1.60 mm at below 15 mm. Twelve cases (mean age 41.17 years; range, 24–62 years), including five males and seven females, were followed up for 24.08 months (14–32 months). IntroductionUnderstanding the modulations of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in the valence of the stimulus from rewarding and aversive status to neutral status is crucial for the development of novel treatments for drug addiction. This study addressed this issue and examined whether optogenetic ChR2 photostimulation in the cingulate, prelimbic, and infralimbic cortices of the mPFC regulated the valence of saccharin solution consumption from the rewarding property, the aversive property induced by morphine’s conditioning, and the neutral states via saccharin extinction processes after morphine’s conditioning.MethodsAll rats received virus infection, buried optical fiber, optical stimulation, water deprivation, and saccharin solution consumption phases. In Experiment 1, rats were given ChR2 virus infection into the cingulate cortex (Cg1), prelimbic cortex (PrL), and infralimbic cortex (IL) to influence the rewarding saccharin solution consumption under photostimulation. In Experiment 2, rats were given ChR2 or EYFP virus infection into the Cg1, PrL, and IL to alter the saccharin solution consumption in the morphine-induced aversively conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and the saccharin solution consumption in the neutral state following the extinction process under photostimulation. Later, the immunohistochemical staining with c-Fos protein was performed for the Cg1, IL, PrL, nucleus accumbens core, nucleus accumbens shell, central amygdala, basolateral amygdala, ventral tegmental area, and dentate gyrus.ResultsThe results showed that optogenetic PrL stimulation decreased the rewarding valence of saccharin solution consumption and increased the morphine-induced, aversive valence of saccharin solution consumption. PrL stimulation decreased the neutral valence of saccharin solution consumption via the extinction process. Cg1 optogenetic stimulation increased the rewarding valence of saccharin solution consumption and the aversive valence of saccharin solution consumption induced by morphine in conditioning. Optogenetic IL stimulation increased the aversive valence of saccharin solution consumption induced by morphine via conditioning.ConclusionAltogether, optogenetic stimulation in the subareas of the mPFC modulated the reward, aversion, and neutral valences of the stimulus and altered neuronal activity in the mPFC, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, and hippocampus. Notably, the change of valence was temporary alternation during light-on related to the light-off periods. However, the findings may provide insights in the development of novel treatments for addictive symptoms.

Summary: Ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation are most causes of early death in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Conditional cardiac-specific low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6)-knockout mice with connexin 43 (Cx43) reduction triggered the lethal ventricular arrhythmias. Thus, it is necessary for exploring whether LRP6 and its upstream genes circRNA1615 mediate the phosphorylation of Cx43 in VT of AMI. Here, we showed that circRNA1615 regulated the expression of LRP6 mRNA through sponge adsorption of miR-152-3p. Importantly, LRP6 interference fragments aggravated hypoxia injury of Cx43, while overexpression of LRP6 improved the phosphorylation of Cx43. Subsequently, interference with G-protein alpha subunit (Gαs) downstream of LRP6 further inhibited the phosphorylation of Cx43, along with increasing VT. Our results demonstrated that LRP6 upstream genes circRNA1615 controlled the damage effect and VT in AMI, and LRP6 mediated the phosphorylation of Cx43 via Gαs which played a role in VT of AMI.

Backgrounds and objectivesCurrently, no consensus has been reached on the therapeutic implications of monoclonal antibodies against amyloid-beta (Aβ) in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to examine the effectiveness and safety of monoclonal antibodies against Aβ as a whole and also to determine the superiority of individual antibodies vis-à-vis placebo in mild or moderate AD.MethodsLiterature retrieval, article selection, and data abstraction were performed independently and in duplicate. Cognition and function were appraised by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog), Disability Assessment for Dementia (DAD), and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale-Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB). Effect sizes are expressed as standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI).ResultsTwenty-nine articles involving 108 drug-specific trials and 21,383 participants were eligible for synthesis. Of the four assessment scales, only CDR-SB was significantly reduced after using monoclonal antibodies against Aβ relative to placebo (SMD: −0.12; 95% CI: −0.2 to −0.03; p = 0.008). Egger's tests indicated a low likelihood of publication bias. At individual levels, bapineuzumab was associated with a significant increase in MMSE (SMD: 0.588; 95% CI: 0.226–0.95) and DAD (SMD: 0.919; 95% CI: 0.105–1.943), and a significant decrease in CDR-SB (SMD: −0.15; 95% CI: −0.282–0.018). Bapineuzumab can increase the significant risk of serious adverse events (OR: 1.281; 95% CI: 1.075–1.525).ConclusionOur findings indicate that monoclonal antibodies against Aβ can effectively improve instrumental activities of daily life in mild or moderate AD. In particular, bapineuzumab can improve cognition and function, as well as activities of daily life, and meanwhile, it triggers serious adverse events.

IntroductionBuckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum), an important food crop, also has medicinal uses. It is widely planted in Southwest China, overlapping with planting areas remarkably polluted by cadmium (Cd). Therefore, it is of great significance to study the response mechanism of buckwheat under Cd stress and further develop varieties with excellent Cd tolerance.MethodsIn this study, two critical periods of Cd stress treatment (days 7 and 14 after Cd treatment) of cultivated buckwheat (Pinku-1, named K33) and perennial species (F. tatari-cymosum Q.F. Chen) (duoku, named DK19) were analyzed using transcriptome and metabolomics.ResultsThe results showed that Cd stress led to changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the chlorophyll system. Moreover, Cd-response genes related to stress response, amino acid metabolism, and ROS scavenging were enriched or activated in DK19. Transcriptome and metabolomic analyses highlighted the important role of galactose, lipid (glycerophosphatide metabolism and glycerophosphatide metabolism), and glutathione metabolism in response to Cd stress in buckwheat, which are significantly enriched at the gene and metabolic levels in DK19.DiscussionThe results of the present study provide valuable information for a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying Cd tolerance in buckwheat and useful clues for the genetic improvement of drought tolerance in buckwheat.

Rockburst disasters always have a great influence on engineering practice. In order to accurately predict the occurrence of rockburst hazards, this paper proposes a rockburst rating evaluation method based on principal component analysis (PCA) and the catastrophe progression method, taking into account several influencing factors. In this paper, 15 indicators, such as strength brittleness factor (R), stress factor (P), and rock quality index (RQD) (reflecting the strength and fragmentation degree of rock mass), were selected from seven samples and were analyzed and downscaled by principal component analysis. Combined with the catastrophe progression method, each layer index was dimensionless and normalized to determine the mutation level value of each layer. Based on the principle of complementarity or non-complementarity, to determine the total mutation level value, the layer index was used to divide the rockblast-level interval and predict the rockblast level. The results show that the method proposed in this paper can be used to not only distinguish the importance of each of the same level of indicators but also avoid the impact of superimposed factor correlations between the same level of indicators, making the results more objective. This paper presents accurate rock explosion assessment results and an actual engineering situation. The number of factors affecting the assessment of the rock explosion level provides new insights.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: RFAP is a compound extraction complex of four Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including the dry bark of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis (Fructus Gardeniae), Albizia julibrissin Durazz. (Albizia julibrissin Durazz), and Paeonia × suffruticosa Andrews (Peony bark). Not only RFAP but also the individual ingredients have been commonly used for the treatment of depression in the clinic. However, the underlying mechanism of pharmacology is difficult to interpret since its holistic and multidrug nature. Aim of the study: This study aimed to elucidate the potential antidepressant mechanism of RFAP in the treatment of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rats' model via the quantitative proteomics approach. Materials and methods: We established the CUMS rats' model and evaluated the efficacy of RFAP using multiple behavior assays, including the sugar preference test, open field test, and forced swimming test. Then label-free quantitative proteomics analyses were performed to evaluate the integrated changes of proteome profiling in control, CUMS, RFAP low dose, and RFAP high dose groups. Finally, we validated the critical changed proteins in the pathways of long-term depression and potentiation via RT-PCR and Western blotting assays. Results: We successfully established the CUMS rats' model. The behavior assays indicated that the rats demonstrated a tendency to behavioral despair after four weeks. Label-free quantitative proteomics showed that 107 proteins were significantly upregulated and 163 proteins were downregulated in the CUMS group compared to the control group. These differentially expressed proteins were involved in long-term potentiation, long-term depression, nervous system development, neuronal synaptic structural constituent of ribosome, ATP metabolic process, learning or memory, and cellular lipid metabolic process. RFAP treatment partially restored the differentially expressed protein profile. The protective effect of RFAP on behavioral assessment were consistent with the results of proteomics. Conclusions: The results indicated that RFAP exerted a synergistic effect on CUMS by regulating long-term inhibition and potentiation-related proteins.

Electric-field control of magnetism requires deterministic control of the magnetic order and understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics like BiFeO3 and EuTiO3. Despite this critical need, there are few studies on the strain evolution of magnetic order in BiFeO3 films. Here, in (110)-oriented BiFeO3 films, we reveal that while the polarization structure remains relatively unaffected, strain can continuously tune the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis across a wide angular space, resulting in an unexpected deviation of the classical perpendicular relationship between the antiferromagnetic axis and the polarization. Calculations suggest that this evolution arises from a competition between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy wherein the former dominates at small strains and the two are comparable at large strains. Finally, strong coupling between the BiFeO3 and the ferromagnet Co0.9Fe0.1 exists such that the magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnet can be effectively controlled by engineering the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis.

Emergent physical properties often arise at interfaces of complex oxide heterostructures due to the interplay between various degrees of freedom, especially those with polar discontinuities. It is desirable to explore if these structures may generate pure and controllable spin currents, which are needed to attain unmatched performance and energy efficiency in the next-generation spintronic devices. Here we report the emergence of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas (SP-2DEG) at the interface of two insulators, SrTiO3 and PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3. This SP-2DEG is strongly localized at the interfacial Ti atoms, due to the interplay between Coulomb interaction and band bending, and can be tuned by the ferroelectric polarization. Our findings open a door for engineering ferroelectric/insulator interfaces to create tunable ferroic orders for magnetoelectric device applications and provide opportunities for designing multiferroic materials in heterostructures.
