Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare straight and tapered implant designs in terms of marginal bone loss, the modified plaque index (mPI), and the modified bleeding index (mBI) for 5 years after functional loading., Methods: Twelve patients were recruited. Two types of implants were placed adjacent to each other: 1 straight implant and 1 tapered implant. Marginal bone loss, mPI, and mBI were measured every year for 5 years after loading., Results: The straight implants showed 0.2±0.4 mm of marginal bone loss at 5 years after loading, while the tapered implants showed 0.2±0.3 mm of marginal bone loss; this difference was not statistically significant ( P= 0.833). Our analysis also showed no statistically significant differences in mPI (straight implants: 0.3±0.3 vs. tapered implants: 0.2±0.3; P= 0.414) or in mBI (straight implants: 0.3±0.4 vs. tapered implants: 0.2±0.3; P= 0.317) at 5 years after prosthesis delivery., Conclusions: Straight and tapered implants showed no significant differences with respect to marginal bone loss, mPI, and mBI for 5 years after loading., Competing Interests: No potential conflict of interest relevant to this article was reported., (Copyright © 2021. Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) causes inconstant oromotor production. We investigated the clinical efficacy of repeated urimal test of articulation and phonation (U-TAP) in CAS patients. Twenty-eight children were recruited: 19 with CAS and 9 with functional articulation disorder (FAD). Four age-matched typically developing children were also recruited. U-TAP was performed twice repeatedly, and the error rate of consonant accuracy (CA) was measured. Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale (PRES) was also performed. The mean U-TAP CA showed a significant difference between the three groups, with 42.04% for CAS, 77.92% for FAD, and 99.68% for the normal group ( p < 0.05). The mean difference between the two U-TAP CAs was 10.01% for CAS, 0.82% for FAD, and no difference for the normal group, revealing a significant intergroup difference between CAS and FAD ( p < 0.05). For the expressive and receptive PRES scores, CAS group showed significantly decreased results compared to FAD and normal group. Only in the CAS group, expressive PRES showed significant decrease rather than receptive PRES score. The CAS group showed a significant difference in the two U-TAP CA compared to the FAD and normal groups. This result implies that repeated U-TAP can be useful for supportive diagnostic tool for CAS by detecting poor reliability of phonation.

Multi-link operation is a new feature of IEEE 802.11be Extremely High Throughput (EHT) that enables the utilization of multiple links using individual frequency channels to transmit and receive between EHT devices. This paper aims to illustrate enhanced multi-link channel access schemes, identify the associated coexistence challenge, and propose solutions. First, we describe the multi-link operation of IEEE 802.11be and how the asynchronous and synchronous channel access schemes facilitate multi-link utilization. Next, we describe the design variants of the synchronous channel access scheme and demonstrate the associated coexistence challenge. Subsequently, we propose four features to address this challenge by assigning penalties to multi-link devices (repicking a backoff count, doubling the contention window size, switching to another contention window set, and compensating the backoff count) as well as five coexistence solutions derived from combinations of these features. Comparative simulation results are provided and analyzed for dense single-spot and indoor random deployment scenarios, demonstrating that the throughput and latency gains of multi-link operation differ between schemes. At the same time, we investigate the coexistence performance of multi-link operation with and without the capability of simultaneous transmission and reception and demonstrate that the proposed solutions mitigate the coexistence problem. In particular, compensating the backoff count achieves the highest coexistence performance among the proposed solutions, with a marginal throughput decrease of multi-link devices. A metric for evaluating both the throughput and latency gains and the coexistence performance of a multi-link channel access scheme using a single value is also proposed.

Due to the demand to upgrade from lithium-ion batteries (LIB), sodium-ion batteries (SIB) have been paid considerable attention for their high-energy, cost-effective, and sustainable battery system. Red phosphorus is one of the most promising anode candidates for SIBs, with a high theoretical specific capacity of 2596 mAh g -1 and in the discharge potential range of 0.01-0.8 V; however, it suffers from a low electrical conductivity, a substantial expansion of volume (~300%), and sluggish electron/ion kinetics. Herein, we have designed a well-defined electrode, which consists of red phosphorus, nanowire arrays encapsulated in the vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (P@C NWs), which were fabricated via a two-step, anodized-aluminum oxide template. The designed anode achieved a high specific capacity of 2250 mAh g -1 (87% of the theoretical capacity), and a stepwise analysis of the reaction behavior between sodium and red phosphorus was demonstrated, both of which have not been navigated in previous studies. We believe that our rational design of the red phosphorus electrode elicited the specific reaction mechanism revealed by the charge-discharge profiles, rendered excellent electrical conductivity, and accommodated volume expansion through the effective nano-architecture, thereby suggesting an efficient structure for the phosphorus anode to advance in the future.

Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily Q member 1 (KCNQ1) is one of the strongest susceptibility genes for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Association studies between KCNQ1 genetic variants and T2DM have been reported. The multifactorial disease T2DM is caused by interactions between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. In this study, we examined the associations between the KCNQ1 haplotype, which consists of the major alleles rs3852528, rs11024175, and rs2237892 (ht: ACC), and environmental factors such as alcohol consumption, which are related to the risk of T2DM, in two independent Korean populations. Data from health examination studies, i.e., HEXA (n = 50,357 subjects) and the Ansung-Ansan community-based Korean cohort study (n = 7603), were analyzed. In both cohorts, fasting blood glucose levels were significantly increased in moderate-to-heavy drinkers and carriers of the homozygous ACC haplotype. A significant association between the KCNQ1 haplotype and alcohol consumption in the risk of diabetes was observed in the HEXA (OR 1.587; 95% CI 1.128-2.234) and Ansung-Ansan (OR 2.165; 95% CI 1.175-3.989) cohorts compared with abstainers not carrying the KCNQ1 haplotype. Associations of the KCNQ1 haplotype with alcohol consumption and β-cell function were observed in the Ansung-Ansan cohort. Moderate-to-heavy drinkers with the ACC haplotype had lower fasting insulin levels and mean 60 min insulinogenic index (IGI 60 ) compared with light drinkers and abstainers not carrying the ACC haplotype. The human microbiome has a role in the development of multiple diseases. Individual microbiome profiles are highly personalized, though many species are shared. Understanding the relationship between the human microbiome and disease may inform future individualized treatments. We hypothesize the blood microbiome signature may be a surrogate for some lung microbial characteristics. We sought associations between the blood microbiome signature and lung-relevant host factors. Based on reads not mapped to the human genome, we detected microbial nucleic acids through secondary use of peripheral blood RNA-sequencing from 2,590 current and former smokers with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) from the COPDGene study. We used the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) microbial pipeline PathSeq to infer microbial profiles. We tested associations between the inferred profiles and lung disease relevant phenotypes and examined links to host gene expression pathways. We replicated our analyses using a second independent set of blood RNA-seq data from 1,065 COPDGene study subjects and performed a meta-analysis across the two studies. The four phyla with highest abundance across all subjects were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. In our meta-analysis, we observed associations (q-value < 0.05) between Acinetobacter, Serratia, Streptococcus and Bacillus inferred abundances and Modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea score. Current smoking status was associated (q < 0.05) with Acinetobacter, Serratia and Cutibacterium abundance. All 12 taxa investigated were associated with at least one white blood cell distribution variable. Abundance for nine of the 12 taxa was associated with sex, and seven of the 12 taxa were associated with race. Host-microbiome interaction analysis revealed clustering of genera associated with mMRC dyspnea score and smoking status, through shared links to several host pathways. This study is the first to identify a bacterial microbiome signature in the peripheral blood of current and former smokers. Objectives: Superimposed multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) co-infection can be associated with worse outcomes in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), even if these patients were managed with strict airborne and contact precautions. Identifying risk factors for isolation of MDROs is critical to COVID-19 treatment., Methods: All eligible adult patients with confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia from 10 hospitals in the Republic of Korea between February 2020 and May 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Using this cohort, epidemiology and risk factors for isolation of MDROs were evaluated., Results: Of 152 patients, 47 with microbial culture results were included. Twenty isolates of MDROs from 13 (28%) patients were cultured. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (5 isolates) was the most common MDRO, followed by methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (4 isolates). MDROs were mostly isolated from sputum samples (80%, 16/20). The median time from hospitalization to MDRO isolation was 28 days (interquartile range, 18-38 days). In-hospital mortality was higher in patients with MDRO isolation (62% vs 15%; P = .001). Use of systemic corticosteroids after diagnosis of COVID-19 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 15.07; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.34-97.01; P = .004) and long-term care facility (LTCF) stay before diagnosis of COVID-19 (aOR: 6.09; 95% CI: 1.02-36.49; P = .048) were associated with MDRO isolation., Conclusions: MDROs were isolated from 28% of COVID-19 pneumonia patients with culture data and 8.6% of the entire cohort. Previous LTCF stay and adjunctive corticosteroid use were risk factors for the isolation of MDROs. Diabetes mellitus (DM) characterized by hyperglycemia leads to a variety of complications, including cognitive impairment or memory loss. The hippocampus is a key brain area for learning and memory and is one of the regions that is most sensitive to diabetes. However, the pathogenesis of diabetic neuronal lesion is not yet completely understood. We focused on the association of microglia activation and brain lesions in diabetes. In this study, we investigated whether and how signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) activation in microglia affects neuronal lesions in diabetic brains. Using a streptozotocin-induced type 1 DM model, we showed enhanced hippocampal neuronal apoptosis that was associated with increased STAT3 activation. We found that hyperglycemia increased the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and interleukin-6, in the diabetic hippocampus. In particular, IFN-γ induced autocrine activation of microglia, and STAT3 activation is important for this process. We also demonstrated that STAT3 activation in microglia increased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression; subsequently, TNF-α increased neuronal apoptosis by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in the neuronal cells. We also took advantage of mice lacking STAT3 in microglia and demonstrated that depletion of microglial STAT3 reduced neuronal apoptosis in the diabetic hippocampus. Taken together, these results suggest that STAT3 activation in microglia plays an important role in hyperglycemia-induced neuronal apoptosis in the diabetic hippocampus and provide a potential therapeutic benefit of STAT3 inhibition in microglia for preventing diabetic neuronal lesions., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is mainly caused by cigarette smoking and characterized by chronic inflammation in vulnerable individuals. However, it is unknown how genetic factors may shape chronic inflammation in COPD. To understand how hedgehog interacting protein, encoded by HHIP gene identified in the genome-wide association study in COPD, plays a role in inflammation, we utilized Hhip+/- mice that present persistent inflammation and emphysema upon aging similar to that observed in human COPD. By performing single-cell RNA sequencing of the whole lung from mice at different ages, we found that Hhip+/- mice developed a cytotoxic immune response with a specific increase in killer cell lectin-like receptor G1-positive CD8+ T cells with upregulated Ifnγ expression recapitulating human COPD. Hhip expression was restricted to a lung fibroblast subpopulation that had increased interaction with CD8+ T lymphocytes in Hhip+/- compared with Hhip+/+ during aging. Hhip-expressing lung fibroblasts had upregulated IL-18 pathway genes in Hhip+/- lung fibroblasts, which was sufficient to drive increased levels of IFN-γ in CD8+ T cells ex vivo. Our finding provides insight into how a common genetic variation contributes to the amplified lymphocytic inflammation in COPD.

Background: Bloodstream infection (BSI) is an important complication of extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO) and a major cause of mortality. This study evaluated the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of BSI that occur during ECMO application according to microbial etiology., Methods: Adult patients who underwent ECMO from January 2009 to December 2016 were retrospectively analyzed for BSI episodes at a 2,700-bed, tertiary center. Epidemiological and clinical characteristics and outcomes of BSI were evaluated and were compared for etiologic groups (gram-positive cocci, gram-negative rods, and fungi groups). Risk factors for 14-day mortality were analyzed., Results: A total of 1,100 patients underwent ECMO during the study period, and 65 BSI episodes occurred in 61 patients. The BSI incidence was 8.3 episodes/1,000 ECMO days, which significantly decreased over time ( P = 0.03), primarily in gram-positive cocci BSI. Gram-positive cocci, gram-negative rods, and fungi accounted for 38%, 40%, and 22% of the 73 blood isolates, respectively. Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups. Catheter-related infection (CRI) and pneumonia were the most common sources of BSI; 52% of gram-positive cocci BSIs and 79% of fungi BSIs were caused by CRI, and 75% of gram-negative BSIs by pneumonia. Patients with gram-negative rods BSI died more frequently and earlier than those with other BSIs. Independent risk factors for 14-day mortality were older age and gram-negative rods BSI., Conclusions: The decreased BSI incidence during ECMO was mainly because of the decrease of gram-positive cocci BSI. The high early mortality of gram-negative rods BSI makes prevention and adequate treatment necessary.

In compromised bone conditions such as osteoporosis, developments of the implant surface are necessary to secure the stability of implants. This study investigated the effect of the surface porous titanium structure (PS) on the osseointegration of implants in osteoporotic bone. Bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) was performed in 4 female beagle dogs to induce osteoporosis for 32 wk. Success of induction was based on the evaluation of bone mineral density by Hounsfield units (HU) in computed tomography images. Posterior teeth in both mandibles were extracted 1 wk after OVX, and a total of 30 implants (15 implants in each group) were placed after 32 wk of osteoporosis induction. The control group implant underwent resorbable blast media (RBM) surface treatment, whereas the test group underwent RBM surface treatment in the coronal two-thirds and a PS added to the apical 3-mm portion. HU values in the mandibular trabecular bone, lumbar, and femoral head significantly decreased 32 wk after OVX, confirming osteoporotic condition after induction. Resonance frequency analysis and removal torque test showed comparable values between the 2 groups at 4 wk after implant placement. The surface topography of the implant after removal showed hard tissue integration at the PS in the test group. Bone-to-implant contact length was greater in the apical portion of the test group, although statistical significance was not found between the groups. Interthread bone area in the apical portion of the test group showed a significant increase compared to the control group (control: 0.059 ± 0.041 mm 2 , test: 0.121 ± 0.060 mm 2 , P = 0.028) with the histological feature of bone ingrowth at the PS. The findings of the study demonstrated that the surface PS could improve osteoconductivity in the osteoporotic trabecular bone by bone ingrowth at the pore space, thereby enhancing the osseointegration and stability of the implants.

Cancer targeting nanoparticles have been extensively studied, but stable and applicable agents have yet to be developed. Here, we report stable nanoparticles based on hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) for cancer therapy. HBcAg monomers assemble into spherical capsids of 180 or 240 subunits. HBcAg was engineered to present an affibody for binding to human epidermal growth factor receptor 1 (EGFR) and to present histidine and tyrosine tags for binding to gold ions. The HBcAg engineered to present affibody and tags (HAF) bound specifically to EGFR and exterminated the EGFR-overexpressing adenocarcinomas under alternating magnetic field (AMF) after binding with gold ions. Using cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), we obtained the molecular structures of recombinant HAF and found that the overall structure of HAF was the same as that of HBcAg, except with the affibody on the spike. Therefore, HAF is viable for cancer therapy with the advantage of maintaining a stable capsid form. If the affibody in HAF is replaced with a specific sequence to bind to another targetable disease protein, the nanoparticles can be used for drug development over a wide spectrum.

Trimethyltin (TMT) is an environmental neurotoxin that mediates dopaminergic neuronal injury in the brain. In this study, we characterized the toxic mechanism and possible protective compounds against TMT-induced neurotoxicity in human dopaminergic neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Antioxidants such as melatonin, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), α-tocopherol, and allopurinol alleviated TMT toxicity. Apoptosis induced by TMT was identified by altered expression of cleaved caspase-3, Bax, Bcl-2, and Bcl-xL through Western blot analysis. The iron chelator deferoxamine ameliorated the alteration of apoptosis-related proteins through TMT exposure. TMT also induced delayed ultrastructural necrotic features such as mitochondrial swelling and cytoplasmic membrane rupture; NAC reduced these necrotic injuries. Esculetin, meloxicam, celecoxib, and phenidone decreased TMT toxicity. Elevation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α, and NF-ĸB and reduction of the antioxidant enzymes catalase and glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPx-1) were induced by TMT and ameliorated by inhibitors of LOX and COX-2 enzymes. Both NMDA and non-NMDA antagonists attenuated TMT toxicity. The free calcium ion modulators nimodipine and BAPTA/AM contributed to neuronal survival against TMT toxicity. Inhibitors of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin pathway, an autophagy regulator, decreased TMT toxicity. These results imply that TMT neurotoxicity is the chief participant in LOX- and COX-2-mediated apoptosis, partly via necrosis and autophagy in SH-SY5Y cells.

Fly ash emitted from the coal-fired power plant is the major contributor of the outdoor airborne particulate matters (PMs). Coal beneficiation, an industrial process to improve the quality of raw coal by removing ash-bearing components, can be a cost-effective sustainable and clean technology to reduce the emission of hazardous trace metals. As the removal efficiency of mineral matters and heavy metals within the coal is depend highly on the raw coal and the employed beneficiation process, a wide range of case studies at laboratory- and industrial-scale, published in the last 20 years, are reviewed in this study. Our review indicates that the coal beneficiation processes can effectively reduce content of heavy metals of fly ash, encouraging the use of clean coal to reduce pollutants emission., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Background: Healthcare facility-onset Clostridioides difficile infection is the leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and is associated with morbidity and mortality. The use of antibiotics is an important risk factor for healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection. We evaluated the correlation between the incidence of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection and antibiotic consumption, according to antibiotic class., Methods: Patients with healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection from January 2017 to December 2018 at Konkuk University Medical Center (a tertiary medical center) were included. We evaluated changes in the incidence of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection and antibiotic consumption. The correlation between the incidence of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection and antibiotic consumption was evaluated two ways: without a time interval and with 1-month interval matching., Results: A total of 446 episodes of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection occurred during the study period. The incidence of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection was 9.3 episodes per 10,000 patient-days, and increased significantly. We observed an increase in the consumption of β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors, and a decrease in the consumption of other classes of antibiotics, with a significant decrease in the consumption of fluoroquinolones, glycopeptides, and clindamycin (P = 0.01, P < 0.001, and P = 0.001, respectively). The consumption of β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors was independently correlated with the incidence of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection in the analysis without a time interval. When the analysis was conducted with 1-month interval matching, glycopeptide consumption was independently associated with the incidence of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection., Conclusions: Despite the reduction in fluoroquinolone and clindamycin consumption, the incidence of healthcare facility-onset C. difficile infection increased during the study period, and was correlated with increased consumption of β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors. The battery safety and cost remain major challenges for developing next-generation rechargeable batteries. All-solid-state sodium (Na)-ion batteries are a promising option for low-cost as well as safe rechargeable batteries by using abundant resources and solid electrolytes. However, the operation of solid-state batteries is limited due to the low ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. Therefore, it is essential to develop new compounds that feature a high ionic conductivity and chemical stability at room temperature. Herein, we report a potassium-substituted sodium superionic conductor solid electrolyte, Na 3- x K x Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2), that exhibits an ionic conductivity of 7.734 × 10 -4 S/cm -1 at room temperature, which is more than 2 times higher than that of the undoped sample. The synchrotron powder diffraction patterns with Rietveld refinements revealed that the substitution of large K-ions resulted in an increased unit cell volume, widened the Na diffusion channel, and shortened the Na-Na distance. Our work demonstrates that substituting a larger cation on the Na site effectively widens the ion diffusion channel and consequently increases the bulk ionic conductivity. Our findings will contribute to improving the ionic conductivity of the solid electrolytes and further developing safe next-generation rechargeable batteries.

Background: Our understanding of the gut microbiota of animals is largely based on studies of mammals. To better understand the evolutionary basis of symbiotic relationships between animal hosts and indigenous microbes, it is necessary to investigate the gut microbiota of non-mammalian vertebrate species. In particular, fish have the highest species diversity among groups of vertebrates, with approximately 33,000 species. In this study, we comprehensively characterized gut bacterial communities in fish., Results: We analyzed 227 individual fish representing 14 orders, 42 families, 79 genera, and 85 species. The fish gut microbiota was dominated by Proteobacteria (51.7%) and Firmicutes (13.5%), different from the dominant taxa reported in terrestrial vertebrates (Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes). The gut microbial community in fish was more strongly shaped by host habitat than by host taxonomy or trophic level. Using a machine learning approach trained on the microbial community composition or predicted functional profiles, we found that the host habitat exhibited the highest classification accuracy. Principal coordinate analysis revealed that the gut bacterial community of fish differs significantly from those of other vertebrate classes (reptiles, birds, and mammals)., Conclusions: Collectively, these data provide a reference for future studies of the gut microbiome of aquatic animals as well as insights into the relationship between fish and their gut bacteria, including the key role of host habitat and the distinct compositions in comparison with those of mammals, reptiles, and birds. Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate factors affecting tumor necrosis with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). Factors associated with early hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after curative hepatectomy were also evaluated.Data of 51 patients who underwent surgery after a single session of TACE at a single university hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Factors that might affect tumor necrosis were determined by evaluating the TACE approach and by analyzing computed tomography and TACE findings, pathologic reports, and laboratory findings.In univariate analysis, microvascular invasion (MVI), radiological capsule appearance on the computed tomography, chronic hepatitis B, diabetes mellitus and serum albumin, MVI were significantly associated with tumor necrosis by TACE (P < .02). In multivariate analysis, MVI was the only statistically significant factor in TACE-induced tumor necrosis (P = .001). In univariate and multivariate analysis, MVI was the strongest factor for recurrence-free survival rate within 2 years (P = .008, P = .002).MVI could be a crucial factor in determining TACE as an initial treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. Background: Family with Sequence Similarity 13, Member A (FAM13A) gene has been consistently associated with COPD by Genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Our previous study demonstrated that FAM13A was mainly expressed in the lung epithelial progenitors including Club cells and alveolar type II epithelial (ATII) cells. Fam13a -/- mice were resistant to cigarette smoke (CS)-induced emphysema through promoting β-catenin/Wnt activation. Given the important roles of β-catenin/Wnt activation in alveolar regeneration during injury, it is unclear when and where FAM13A regulates the Wnt pathway, the requisite pathway for alveolar epithelial repair, in vivo during CS exposure in lung epithelial progenitors., Methods: Fam13a +/+ or Fam13a -/- mice were crossed with TCF/Lef:H2B-GFP Wnt-signaling reporter mouse line to indicate β-catenin/Wnt-activated cells labeled with GFP followed by acute (1 month) or chronic (7 months) CS exposure. Fluorescence-activated flow cytometry analysis, immunofluorescence and organoid culture system were performed to identify the β-catenin/Wnt-activated cells in Fam13a +/+ or Fam13a -/- mice exposed to CS. Fam13a;SftpcCreERT2;Rosa26RmTmG mouse line, where GFP labels ATII cells, was generated for alveolar organoid culture followed by analyses of organoid number, immunofluorescence and gene expression. Single cell RNA-seq data from COPD ever smokers and nonsmoker control lungs were further analyzed., Findings: We found that FAM13A-deficiency significantly increased Wnt activation mainly in lung epithelial cells. Consistently, after long-term CS exposure in vivo, FAM13A deficiency bestows alveolar epithelial progenitor cells with enhanced proliferation and differentiation in the ex vivo organoid model. Importantly, expression of FAM13A is significantly increased in human COPD-derived ATII cells compared to healthy ATII cells as suggested by single cell RNA-sequencing data., Interpretation: Our findings suggest that FAM13A-deficiency promotes the Wnt pathway-mediated ATII cell repair/regeneration, and thereby possibly mitigating CS-induced alveolar destruction. Objective: CD4 + T cells have been suggested as the most disease-relevant cell type in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in which RA-risk non-coding variants exhibit allele-specific effects on regulation of RA-driving genes. This study aimed to understand RA-specific signatures in CD4 + T cells using multi-omics data, interpreting inter-omics relationships in shaping the RA transcriptomic landscape., Methods: We profiled genome-wide variants, gene expression and DNA methylation in CD4 + T cells from 82 patients with RA and 40 healthy controls using high-throughput technologies. We investigated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differential methylated regions (DMRs) in RA and localised quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for expression and methylation. We then integrated these based on individual-level correlations to inspect DEG-regulating sources and investigated the potential regulatory roles of RA-risk variants by a partitioned-heritability enrichment analysis with RA genome-wide association summary statistics., Results: A large number of RA-specific DEGs were identified (n=2575), highlighting T cell differentiation and activation pathways. RA-specific DMRs, preferentially located in T cell regulatory regions, were correlated with the expression levels of 548 DEGs mostly in the same topologically associating domains. In addition, expressional variances in 771 and 83 DEGs were partially explained by expression QTLs for DEGs and methylation QTLs (meQTLs) for DEG-correlated DMRs, respectively. A large number of RA variants were moderately to strongly correlated with meQTLs. Telomeric repeat binding factor a (Terfa) derived from zebrafish is a homologous protein with human telomeric repeat binding factor 2 (TRF2). Terfa is known as a senescence-associated biomarker in various research through the zebrafish animal model. In addition, according to the findings so far, it has been confirmed that human or plant telomere binding proteins bind to telomeric DNA specialized for each species, but, in our result, Terfa shows it strongly binds to both human or plant type telomeric DNA. Here we characterized the DNA binding properties and demonstrate the solution structure of Terfa and identified residues participating in the interaction with both human and plant telomeric DNA. In DNA recognition of human and plant telomere binding proteins, the N-terminal loop and the α-helix 3 part of Myb domain were bound majorly, whereas, in the case of Terfa, the N-terminal loop, the α-helix 1-2 loop, and α-helix 2 of the Myb domain were dominantly bound. Therefore, when Terfa recognizes DNA, it was found that the binding module differs from previously known telomere binding proteins. Alnus sibirica Fisch. ex Turcz (ASFT), belonging to the family of Betulaceae, grows naturally in Asia, Europe, and America. The aims of this study are determining the efficacy of various biomarkers related to hair loss, evaluated by extracting the branch with 60% alcohol, and purely separating diarylheptanoid oregonin, an indicator and active substance, from 60% alcohol extract of the tree. To determine the preventive effects on hair loss, we investigated the anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic effects on hydrogen peroxide-induced cytotoxicity on human hair dermal papilla cells using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and Western blotting analysis for proving of apoptosis-related marker alteration, respectively. Moreover, we examined the ameliorative effects of 60% alcohol extract of the tree and oregonin against changes of oxidative stress-induced cytokine and testosterone-induced dihydrotestosterone production as crucial pathways of the hair loss mechanism. Periodic nanostructures, a group of nanomaterials consisting of single or multiple nano units/components periodically arranged into ordered patterns (e.g., vertical and lateral superlattices), have attracted tremendous attention in recent years due to their extraordinary physical and chemical properties that offer a huge potential for a multitude of applications in energy conversion, electronic and optoelectronic applications. Recent advances in the preparation strategies of periodic nanostructures, including self-assembly, epitaxy, and exfoliation, have paved the way to rationally modulate their ferroelectricity, superconductivity, band gap and many other physical and chemical properties. For example, the recent discovery of superconductivity observed in "magic-angle" graphene superlattices has sparked intensive studies in new ways, creating superlattices in twisted 2D materials. Recent development in the various state-of-the-art preparations of periodic nanostructures has created many new ideas and findings, warranting a timely review. In this review, we discuss the current advances of periodic nanostructures, including their preparation strategies, property modulations and various applications.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is known to accelerate muscle loss in the elderly due to reduced physical performance, increasing the prevalence and severity of sarcopenia. This study was undertaken to determine whether simple bedside exercise training may facilitate muscle growth and strengthening in moderate-degree AD patients., Methods: This study was conducted on 26 prospectively recruited women admitted to a nursing hospital, who had moderate AD and sarcopenia. They were randomly and evenly divided into the control and exercise groups. For five sessions per week, those in the exercise group underwent 30 min of therapist-supervised exercise by simply kicking a balloon connected to the ceiling by a piece of string while lying on a bed. Additional exercise was encouraged, and isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) were measured and calculated after 12 weeks., Results: Through simple exercise training for 12 weeks, MVCs for hip flexion and knee extension significantly increased in the exercise group. However, no significant differences in SMI were found between the two groups., Conclusions: We believe that our simple exercise method can be applied to patients with AD for maintaining and enhancing the strength of the muscles of the lower extremities.

Bismuth-Telluride-based compounds are unique materials for thermoelectric cooling applications. Because Bi 2 Te 3 is a narrow gap semiconductor, the bipolar diffusion effect is a critical issue to enhance thermoelectric performance. Here, we report the significant reduction of thermal conductivity by decreasing lattice and bipolar thermal conductivity in extrinsic phase mixing of MgO and VO 2 nanoparticles in Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 (BST) bulk matrix. When we separate the thermal conductivity by electronic κel, lattice κlat, and bipolar κbi thermal conductivities, all the contributions in thermal conductivities are decreased with increasing the concentration of oxide particle distribution, indicating the effective phonon scattering with an asymmetric scattering of carriers. The reduction of thermal conductivity affects the improvement of the ZT values. Even though significant carrier filtering effect is not observed in the oxide bulk composites due to micro-meter size agglomeration of particles, the interface between oxide and bulk matrix scatters carriers giving rise to the increase of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity. Therefore, we suggest the extrinsic phase mixing of nanoparticles decreases lattice and bipolar thermal conductivity, resulting in the enhancement of thermoelectric performance over a wide temperature range.

ZnO and Aluminum doped ZnO nanoparticles (Al/ZnO NPs) were successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method. Together with the effect of calcination temperatures (200, 300 and 400 °C) and Al dosage (1%, 3%, 5% and 10%) on structural, morphological and optical properties of Al/ZnO NPs, their photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye was investigated. The calcination temperatures at 200, 300 and 400 °C in forming structure of ZnO NPs led to spherical nanoparticle, nanorod and nanoflake structures with a well-crystalline hexagonal wurtzite, respectively. The ZnO NPs calcined at 200 °C exhibited the highest specific surface area and light absorption property, leading to the MO removal efficiency of 80% after 4 h under the Ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. The MO removal efficiency was approximately two times higher than the nanoparticles calcined at 400 °C. Furthermore, the 5% Al/ZnO NPs exhibited superior MO removal efficiency of 99% in only 40 min which was approximately 20 times enhancement in photocatalytic activity compared to pristine ZnO under the visible light irradiation. This high degradation performance was attributed to the extended light absorption, narrowed band gap and effective suppression of electron-hole recombination through an addition of Al metal.

This study investigated the differentiation of transplanted transplanted mesenchymal stem cells MSCs into neuron-like cells, repair of erectile dysfunction (ED), and synergy of MSCs seeded to nanofibrous scaffolds with after transplantation around the injured cavernous nerve (CN) of rats. The synthesized polymer was electrospun in a rotating drum to prepare nanofiber meshes (NMs). Human MSCs were prepared and confirmed. Eight-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups of six each: group 1-sham operation; group 2-CN injury; group 3-MSCs treatment after CN injury; group 4-nanofibrous scaffold treatment after CN injury; and group 5-post-CN injury treatment combining a nanofibrous scaffold and MSCs (nano-MSCs). In the latter group, the damaged CN was instantly surrounded by an MSC-containing a nanofibrous scaffold in the aftermath of injury. Morphological analysis and immuno-histochemical staining in relation to nerves (Tuj1, NF, MAP2, MBP and peripherin), endothelium (vWF), smooth muscle (SMA), neurofilament (NF), and apoptosis (TUNEL) were performed. We evaluated the mean proportion expressed as a percentage of the ratio of muscle to collagen of penile cavernous smooth-muscle cells as well as the expression of cavernous SMA, NF, vWF, and TUNEL makers. Compared to the group free of CN injury, erectile function was markedly reduced in the group with CN injury at 2 and 4 weeks (p < 0.05). By contrast, compared to the sham operation group, erectile function was better in the group with MSC transplantation (p < 0.05). Similarly, by comparison to the group solely with hMSCs, erectile function was better in the group with nano-MSC transplantation (p < 0.05). Transplantation of MSCs demonstrated the neuronal differentiation. By contrast to MSCs on their own, neuronal differentiation was more significantly expressed in nano-MSCs. The mean proportion expressed as a percentage of the ratio of muscle to collagen of penile cavernous smooth-muscle cells, the expression of cavernous SMA, NF, vWF, and apoptosis improved in the cavernosum after transplantation. NMs showed synergy with MSCs for the repair of erectile dysfunction. Transplanted MSCs differentiated into neuron-like cells and repaired erectile dysfunction in the rats with CN injury. Transplanted MSCs increased the mean percentage of the collagen area of the caversnosum as well as the expression levels of cavernous neuronal, endothelial, smooth-muscle markers, and apoptosis.

Three novel bacterial strains, HDW9A T , HDW9B T , and HDW9C T , isolated from the intestine of the diving beetles Cybister lewisianus and Cybister brevis, were characterized as three novel species using a polyphasic approach. The isolates were Gram-staining-positive, strictly aerobic, non-motile, and rod-shaped. They grew optimally at 30°C (pH 7) in the presence of 0.5% (wt/vol) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that they belong to the genus Leucobacter and are closely related to L. denitrificans M1T8B10 T (98.4-98.7% sequence similarity). Average nucleotide identity (ANI) values among the isolates were 76.4-84.1%. ANI values for the isolates and the closest taxonomic species, L. denitrificans KACC 14055 T , were 72.3-73.1%. The isolates showed ANI values of < 76.5% with all analyzable Leucobacter strains in the EzBioCloud database. The genomic DNA G + C content of the isolates was 60.3-62.5%. The polar lipid components were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, and other unidentified glycolipids, phospholipids, and lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C 15:0 , iso-C 16:0 , and anteiso-C 17:0 . MK-10 was the major respiratory quinone, and MK-7 and MK-11 were the minor respiratory quinones. The whole-cell sugar components of the isolates were ribose, glucose, galactose, and mannose. The isolates harbored L-2,4-diaminobutyric acid, L-serine, L-lysine, L-aspartic acid, glycine, and D-glutamic acid within the cell wall peptidoglycan. Based on phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic analyses, strains HDW9A T , HDW9B T , and HDW9C T represent three novel species within the genus Leucobacter. We propose the name Leucobacter coleopterorum sp. nov. for strain HDW9A T (= KACC 21331 T = KCTC 49317 T = JCM 33667 T ), the name Leucobacter insecticola sp. nov. for strain HDW9B T (= KACC 21332 T = KCTC 49318 T = JCM 33668 T ), and the name Leucobacter viscericola sp. nov. for strain HDW9C T (= KACC 21333 T = KCTC 49319 T = JCM 33669 T ).

Background: Endoscopic submucosal dissection has become popular. However, this can cause serious complications. In this case, esophageal perforation caused bilateral tension pneumothorax., Case: A 60-year-old man with esophageal adenoma underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection under general anesthesia. The peak airway pressure was 25 cmH2O after induction but abruptly increased to 40 cmH2O after 30 min. Respiratory sounds were barely heard. The lack of lung sliding in either (right-dominant) lung on ultrasound. Within minutes, oxygen saturation and systolic blood pressure decreased to 52% and 70 mmHg. Emergent needle thoracostomy, followed by chest tube insertion, was performed on right chest and his vital signs stabilized. Upon transfer to intensive care unit, oxygen saturation and blood pressure decreased again; therefore, a left chest tube was inserted., Conclusions: Pneumothorax due to esophageal perforation can lead to life-threatening tension pneumothorax. Anesthesiologists should be aware of the risks and emergency treatment. Ultrasound can be useful for immediate bedside patient-care decisions.

A polyphasic taxonomic approach was used to characterize two novel bacterial strains, designated as HDW11 T and HDW19 T , isolated from intestine samples of the dark diving beetle Hydrophilus acuminatus and the diving beetle Cybister lewisianus , respectively. Both isolates were Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic and non-motile. Strain HDW11 T grew optimally at 30 °C, pH 8 and in the presence of 1% (w/v) NaCl. Strain HDW19 T grew optimally at 25 °C, pH 7 and in the presence of 0.3% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and genome sequences revealed that strain HDW11 T is a member of the genus Brevilactibacter and is closely related to Brevilactibacter flavus VG341 T [with 97.9% 16S rRNA sequence identity and 79.1% average nucleotide identity (ANI)], and that strain HDW19 T belongs to the genus Weissella and is closely related to W. koreensis KCTC 3621 T (with 98.9% 16S rRNA sequence identity and 79.5% ANI). The major cellular fatty acids of strains HDW11 T and HDW19 T were C 18:1 ω 9c and anteiso-C 15:0 , respectively. The sole respiratory quinone of strain HDW11 T was MK-9 (H 4 ). The major polar lipid components of strain HDW11 T were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol, and the major polar lipid component of strain HDW19 T was diphosphatidylglycerol. The genomic DNA G+C content of strains HDW11 T and HDW19 T were 72.1 and 37.2 mol%, respectively. The results of phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic analyses suggest that strain HDW11 T represents a novel species within the genus Brevilactibacter , and that strain HDW19 T represents a novel species within the genus Weissella . We propose the name Brevilactibacter coleopterorum sp. nov. for strain HDW11 T (=KACC 21335 T =KCTC 49320 T =JCM 33680 T ) and the name Weissella coleopterorum for strain HDW19 T (=KACC 21347 T =KCTC 43114 T =JCM 33684 T ).

Chloride ion-pumping rhodopsin (ClR) in some marine bacteria utilizes light energy to actively transport Cl - into cells. How the ClR initiates the transport is elusive. Here, we show the dynamics of ion transport observed with time-resolved serial femtosecond (fs) crystallography using the Linac Coherent Light Source. X-ray pulses captured structural changes in ClR upon flash illumination with a 550 nm fs-pumping laser. High-resolution structures for five time points (dark to 100 ps after flashing) reveal complex and coordinated dynamics comprising retinal isomerization, water molecule rearrangement, and conformational changes of various residues. Pericytes play a crucial role in preventing endothelial permeability by maintaining the integrity of tight junctions in endothelial cells; however, early pathological change in diabetic retinopathyis pericyte loss, which can lead to visual impairment by increasing endothelial permeability. Therefore, finding proteins and mechanisms that cause pericyte loss in diabetic retinopathy is beneficial for attenuating vision impairment. The present study focused on the effect of IL-1β on pericyte loss and endothelial permeability in diabetic retinopathy. It was demonstrated that IL-1β increased in the diabetic mouse retina and that the source of IL-1β could be endothelial cells and microglia. IL-1β induced pericyte apoptosis via NF-κB activation under high glucose conditions, but did not induce endothelial cell apoptosis. Moreover, IL-1β did not affect permeability in the endothelial cell monolayer; however, when cocultured with pericytes and endothelial cells, it increased endothelial cell permeability by reducing the amount of tight junction protein in endothelial cells. Furthermore, NF-κB inhibitor restored the altered permeability and tight junction protein expression in endothelial cells induced by IL-1β in cocultures of pericytes and endothelial cells. Collectively, IL-1β induced pericyte apoptosis via NF-κB activation under high glucose conditions, thereby increasing endothelial permeability in diabetic retinopathy. We investigated the anisotropic thermoelectric properties of the Bi 2 Te 2.85 Se 0.15 I x (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 mol.%) compounds, synthesized by ball-milling and hot-press sintering. The electrical conductivities of the Bi 2 Te 2.85 Se 0.15 I x were significantly improved by the increase of carrier concentration. The dominant electronic scattering mechanism was changed from the mixed (T ≤ 400 K) and ionization scattering (T ≥ 420 K) for pristine compound (x = 0.0) to the acoustic phonon scattering by the iodine doping. The Hall mobility was also enhanced with the increasing carrier concentration. The enhancement of Hall mobility was caused by the increase of the mean free path of the carrier from 10.8 to 17.7 nm by iodine doping, which was attributed to the reduction of point defects without the meaningful change of bandgap energy. From the electron diffraction patterns, a lattice distortion was observed in the iodine doped compounds. The modulation vector due to lattice distortion increased with increasing iodine concentration, indicating the shorter range lattice distortion in real space for the higher iodine concentration. The bipolar thermal conductivity was suppressed, and the effective masses were increased by iodine doping. It suggests that the iodine doping minimizes the ionization scattering giving rise to the suppression of the bipolar diffusion effect, due to the prohibition of the Bi Te1 antisite defect, and induces the lattice distortion which decreases lattice thermal conductivity, resulting in the enhancement of thermoelectric performance.

Objective: As of June 30, 2020, interventional radiology (IR) fellowships will cease to exist and will be replaced by the integrated IR, independent IR, and early specialization in IR (ESIR) pathways. The objective of this study is to determine the alignment in the number of available positions between the ESIR and independent IR pathways., Methods: An analysis was performed of 150 residency programs offering at least 1 of the 3 IR training pathways. Information regarding the most up-to-date list for integrated IR, independent IR, ESIR, and IR fellowship programs were obtained from the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) websites. A 4-question survey was distributed to residency program directors and residency program coordinators to confirm the number of positions offered in each of the training pathways at their institution., Results: Ninety-nine of 113 ESIR programs (87.6% response rate) reported a total of 176 approved ESIR positions. One hundred and eleven fellowship programs in the United States currently offer a total of 331 positions. Seventy-seven integrated IR programs and 48 independent IR programs offer 150 and 133 positions, respectively, for a total of 283 advanced IR training positions., Discussion: A substantial discrepancy currently exists with IR training pathways, as the number of available ESIR positions far outnumbers the available independent IR pathway positions. Chronic alcohol consumption is known to be associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is developed by two underlying mechanisms, β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance. Identification of genetic variants in association with the development of T2D may help explain the genetic risk factors of T2D. In this study, we tried to find out some genetic variations, which interact with alcohol consumption and also are associated with β-cell function through 12 year's follow-up study in Korean population. We performed a genotype association study using the community-based Ansung-Ansan Cohort data (baseline n = 3120; follow-up n = 433). Genotype association analyses of the baseline data showed that alcohol consumption is associated with the decreases of blood insulin levels and insulin secretion in participants with the KCNJ11 rs5219 risk allele. Moreover, multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that the risk allele group is vulnerable to impairment of β-cell function in response to alcohol consumption (OR 1.450; 95% CI 1.061-1.982). Furthermore, 12-year' follow-up results showed that alcohol consumption synergistically decreases insulin secretion in participants with KCNJ11 rs5219 risk alleles. Our findings demonstrate that the KCNJ11 rs5219 risk allele in combination with alcohol consumption could be a potential risk factor of β-cell dysfunction. We hope that this new findings could be helpful to further understand the development of T2D depending on individual genetic background in association with alcohol consumption.

This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of diagnosing periodontitis via the identification of 18 bacterial species in mouth-rinse samples. Patients (n = 110) who underwent dental examinations in the Department of Periodontology at the Veterans Health Service Medical Center between 2018 and 2019 were included. They were divided into healthy and periodontitis groups. The overall number of bacteria, and those of 18 specific bacteria, were determined via real-time polymerase chain reaction in 92 mouth-rinse samples. Differences between groups were evaluated through logistic regression after adjusting for sex, age, and smoking history. There was a significant difference in the prevalence (healthy vs. periodontitis group) of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (2.9% vs. 13.5%), Treponema denticola (42.9% vs. 69.2%), and Prevotella nigrescens (80% vs. 2.7%). Levels of Treponema denticola , Prevotella nigrescens , and Streptococcus mitis were significantly associated with severe periodontitis. We demonstrated the feasibility of detecting periopathogenic bacteria in mouth-rinse samples obtained from patients with periodontitis. As we did not comprehensively assess all periopathogenic bacteria, further studies are required to assess the potential of oral-rinsing solutions to indicate oral infection risk and the need to improve oral hygiene, and to serve as a complementary method for periodontal disease diagnosis.

WiFi backscatter communication has emerged as a promising enabler of ultralow-power connectivity for Internet of things, wireless sensor network and smart energy. In this paper, we propose a multi-filter design for effective decoding of WiFi backscattered signals. Backscattered signals are relatively weak compared to carrier WiFi signals and therefore require algorithms that filter out original WiFi signals without affecting the backscattered signals. Two multi-filter designs for WiFi backscatter decoding are presented: the summation and delimiter approaches. Both implementations employ the use of additional filters with different window sizes to efficiently cut off undesired noise/interference, thus enhancing frame detection and decoding performance, and can be coupled with a wide range of decoding algorithms. The designs are particularly productive in the frequency-shift WiFi backscatter communication. We demonstrate via prototyping and testbed experiments that the proposed design enhances the performance of various decoding algorithms in real environments.

Background: Nannochloropsis is a marine microalga that has been extensively studied. The major carotenoid produced by this group of microalgae is violaxanthin, which exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-photoaging, and antiproliferative activities. Therefore, it has a wide range of potential applications. However, large-scale production of this pigment has not been much studied, thereby limiting its industrial application., Results: To develop a novel strain producing high amount of violaxanthin, various Nannochloropsis species were isolated from seawater samples and their violaxanthin production potential were compared. Of the strains tested, N. oceanica WS-1 exhibited the highest violaxanthin productivity; to further enhance the violaxanthin yield of WS-1, we performed gamma-ray-mediated random mutagenesis followed by colorimetric screening. As a result, Mutant M1 was selected because of its significant higher violaxanthin content and biomass productivity than WS-1 (5.21 ± 0.33 mg g - 1 and 0.2101 g L - 1 d - 1 , respectively). Subsequently, we employed a 10 L-scale bioreactor to confirm the large-scale production potential of M1, and the results indicated a 43.54 % increase in violaxanthin production compared with WS-1. In addition, comparative transcriptomic analysis performed under normal light condition identified possible mechanisms associated with remediating photo-inhibitory damage and other key responses in M1, which seemed to at least partially explain enhanced violaxanthin content and delayed growth., Conclusions: Nannochloropsis oceanica mutant (M1) with enhanced violaxanthin content was developed and its physiological characteristics were investigated. In addition, enhanced production of violaxanthin was demonstrated in the large-scale cultivation. Key transcriptomic responses that are seemingly associated with different physiological responses of M1 were elucidated under normal light condition, the details of which would guide ongoing efforts to further maximize the industrial potential of violaxanthin producing strains.

There are few studies on dietary patterns and frailty in Asians, and the results are controversial. Therefore, this study examined the association between dietary patterns and frailty in older Korean adults using the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS). The sample consisted of 511 subjects, aged 70-84 years, community-dwelling older people from the KFACS. Dietary data were obtained from the baseline study (2016-2017) using two nonconsecutive 24-h dietary recalls, and dietary patterns were extracted using reduced rank regression. Frailty was measured by a modified version of the Fried Frailty Phenotype (FFP) in both the baseline (2016) and the first follow-up study (2018). A logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between dietary patterns and frailty status in 2018. The "meat, fish, and vegetables" pattern was inversely associated with pre-frailty (OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.21-0.81, p for trend = 0.009) and exhaustion (OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.20-0.85, p for trend = 0.020). The "milk" pattern was not significantly associated with frailty status or the FFP components. In conclusion, a dietary pattern with a high consumption of meat, fish, and vegetables was associated with a lower likelihood of pre-frailty.

Following the construction of eight large weirs in a 200-km section of the Nakdong River, which is a major water source for the region, harmful cyanobacterial blooms have been occurring annually, causing severe problems with water quality. The present study investigated the community structure of harmful cyanobacteria and identified temporal and spatial patterns in harmful cyanobacterial blooms and their dynamic relationships with physicochemical, hydrological, and meteorological variables in the eight weir sections for 6 years from 2013 to 2018. The dominant harmful cyanobacteria in the eight weir sections were Aphanizomenon and Microcystis spp. There was a successional phenomenon wherein Aphanizomenon spp. first bloomed in spring, and then Microcystis spp. bloomed as water temperatures increased. Additionally, the initiation and duration of the blooms of both genera were affected by the timing and volume of heavy rainfall that caused flushing of cyanobacterial biomass, resulting in direct reduction of cyanobacterial growth in all sections. The harmful cyanobacteria of upstream weirs did not affect the biomass of downstream weirs in terms of either growth initiation or time taken to reach peak biomass, despite being physically connected. As abnormal angiogenesis is associated with exacerbation of various diseases, precise control over angiogenesis is imperative. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), the most well-known angiogenic factor, binds to VEGF receptor (VEGFR), activates various signaling pathways, and mediates angiogenesis. Therefore, blocking the VEGF-induced angiogenic response-related signaling pathways may alleviate various disease symptoms through inhibition of angiogenesis. Ulmus davidiana is a safe natural product that has been traditionally consumed, but its effects on endothelial cells (ECs) and the underlying mechanism of action are unclear. In the present study, we focused on the effect of a 60% edible ethanolic extract of U. davidiana (U60E) on angiogenesis. U60E inhibited the VEGF-mediated proliferation, tube formation, and migration ability of ECs. Mechanistically, U60E inhibited endothelial nitric oxide synthase activation and nitric oxide production by blocking the protein kinase B signaling pathway activated by VEGF and consequently inhibiting proliferation, tube formation, and migration of ECs. These results suggest that U60E could be a potential and safe therapeutic agent capable of suppressing proangiogenic diseases by inhibiting VEGF-induced angiogenesis.

Objectives: We aimed to provide information on the effects of tonsillectomy, in particular, its effects on taste dysfunction; also known as dysgeusia, and provide direction for future research in this area., Methods: We independently searched five databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane database) for related studies published as recently as December 2019. From the included studies, we reviewed the findings on tonsillectomy and taste disturbance through the use of a questionnaire, chemogustometry, and electrogustometry. We analyzed other conditions that were measured in these studies that included; postoperative pain intensity and other morbidities (eg, postoperative bleeding, hemostasis, tongue numbness and zinc, copper, and iron hemoglobin levels measured)., Results: Postoperative taste disturbance based on questionnaire (VAS) scores at 14 days (SMD = -0.31 [-0.50, -0.12], P value = .0012) tended to decrease significantly in the post-tonsillectomy group compared to the pre-tonsillectomy group. Patients showed significantly decreased taste sensation after tonsillectomy than in the preoperative test. Postoperative electrogusmetry at 7 days (SMD = 0.60 [0.27, 0.94], P  = .0004) tended to increase significantly in the post-tonsillectomy group compared to the pre-tonsillectomy group., Conclusion: Tonsillectomy is a commonly performed surgery, and taste disturbance occurs frequently as a post operative effect. Taste dysfunction is important to patients with regard to their quality of life and the overall effects of taste on their day-to-day life. This study can be a useful meta-analysis of dysgeusia in tonsillectomy.

Biodegradable films based on chitosan, glycerol, and defatted Chlorella biomass (DCB) were prepared and characterized in terms of thermal stability, mechanical, water barrier, and optical properties. Increasing DCB content from 5 to 25 wt% increased tensile strength of chitosan films by 235%. The incorporation of DCB decreased both moisture content and swelling degree of chitosan/defatted Chlorella biomass (Cs/DCB) films. Furthermore, increasing the content of defatted algal biomass decreased light transmission and reduced water vapor permeability of composite films by more than 60%. As confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared analysis, such improvement in functional and physical properties is mainly due to the homogeneous and uniform distribution of DCB into the polymeric matrix along with the establishment of strong hydrogen bond interactions between chitosan and algal biomass constituents. With growing interest in healthcare, wearable healthcare devices have been developed and researched. In particular, near-field communication (NFC) based wearable devices have been actively studied for device miniaturization. Herein, this article proposes a low-cost and convenient healthcare system, which can monitor heart rate and temperature using a wireless/battery-free sensor and the customized smartphone application. The authors designed and fabricated a customized healthcare device based on the NFC system, and developed a smartphone application for real-time data acquisition and processing. In order to achieve compact size without performance degradation, a dual-layered layout is applied to the device. The authors demonstrate that the device can operate as attached on various body sites such as wrist, fingertip, temple, and neck due to outstanding flexibility of device and adhesive strength between the device and the skin. In addition, the data processing flow and processing result are presented for offering heart rate and skin temperature. Therefore, this work provides an affordable and practical pathway for the popularization of wireless wearable healthcare system. Moreover, the proposed platform can easily delivery the measured health information to experts for contactless/personal health consultation.

Bifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) process for simultaneous hydrogen production and mineralisation of humic acid in water using TiO 2 -1 wt% Au@TiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 /Cu 2 O multi-layered p-type photoelectrodes is demonstrated. The newly designed bifunctional PEC system leads to a high degradation efficiency of dissolved humic compounds, the target pollutant, by up to 87% during 2 h reaction time. Simultaneously, humic acid is also served as a sacrificial electron donor in the proposed system, contributing to a high photocurrent density of the multi-layered p-type Cu 2 O photoelectrodes up to -6.32 mA cm -2 at 0 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE) under the AM 1.5 simulated 1-Sun solar illumination. The Z-scheme feature of this bifunctional PEC devices exhibiting a short-circuit photocurrent density of -0.45 mA cm -2 and solar-to-hydrogen conversion (STH) of 0.5 % in the presence of humic acid sheds light on the new bias-free artificial photosynthesis PEC system., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a disease that causes blindness due to vascular leakage or abnormal angiogenesis. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is increased in the serum or vitreous fluid in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) patients, although the effect of HGF on the blood vessels remains unclear. This study focused on the effect of HGF on pericyte (PC) survival and endothelial cell (EC) permeability. It was demonstrated that HGF was increased in the diabetic mouse retina. However, HGF prevented PC apoptosis caused by TNF-α, which increased in the diabetic retinas both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, HGF was involved in PC survival by increasing the Akt signaling pathway. Moreover, HGF strengthened the EC tight junction in co-cultures of PCs and ECs by promoting PC survival, thereby reducing EC permeability. These results suggest that HGF may play a role in the prevention of increased vascular leakage by inhibiting the PC loss that occurs in DR to some extent. A polyphasic taxonomic approach was used to characterize a novel bacterium, designated as strain HDW20 T , isolated from the intestine of the dark diving beetle Hydrophilus acuminatus . The isolate was Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, coccus-shaped, and formed pale orange colonies. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and genome sequences showed that the isolate belonged to the genus Tessaracoccus in the phylum Actinobacteria and was closely related to T. flavescens SST-39 T , T. defluvii JCM 17540 T , and T. aquimaris NSG39 T , with the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.5 % and a highest average nucleotide identity (ANI) value of 80.6 %. The major cellular fatty acids were C 18 : 1  ω 9 c and anteiso-C 15 : 0 . The main respiratory quinone was MK-9 (H 4 ). The major polar lipid components were phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The genomic DNA G+C content was 69.0 %. The isolate contains ʟʟ-diaminopimelic acid, ʟ-alanine, and ʟ-lysine as amino acid components, and ribose, glucose, and galactose as sugar components of the cell wall peptidoglycan. The results of phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic analyses suggested that strain HDW20 T represents a novel species within the genus Tessaracoccus . We propose the name Tessaracoccus coleopterorum sp. nov. The type strain is HDW20 T (=KACC 21348 T =KCTC 49324 T =JCM 33674 T ).

The BRG1-associated factor 60A (BAF60A), an SWI/SNF-related matrix-associated actin-dependent regulator of chromatin subfamily D member 1, has been known to be important for transcriptional activation and inhibition through the alteration of the DNA nucleosome. Although the association between BAF60A and p53 plays a critical role in tumor suppression, the interaction mode is still unclear. Here, we report the detailed interactions between BAF60A and p53 by both NMR spectroscopy and pull-down analysis. Both N-terminal region (BAF60A NR ) and the SWIB domain (BAF60A SWIB ) of BAF60A directly interact with the tetramerization domain of p53 (p53 TET ). NMR data show that Ile315, Met366, Ala388, and Tyr390 of BAF60A SWIB are mostly involved in p53 TET binding. The calculated dissociation constant (K D ) value between BAF60A SWIB and p53 TET revealed relatively weak binding affinity, at approximately 0.3 ± 0.065 mM. The SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex plays important roles in gene regulation and it is classified as the SWI/SNF complex in yeast and BAF complex in vertebrates. BAF57, one of the subunits that forms the chromatin remodeling complex core, is well conserved in the BAF complex of vertebrates, which is replaced by bap111 in the Drosophila BAP complex and does not have a counterpart in the yeast SWI/SNF complex. This suggests that BAF57 is a key component of the chromatin remodeling complex in higher eukaryotes. BAF57 contains a HMG domain, which is widely distributed among various proteins and functions as a DNA binding motif. Most proteins with HMG domain bind to four-way junction (4WJ) DNA. Here, we report the crystal structure of the HMG domain of BAF57 (BAF57 HMG ) at a resolution of 2.55 Å. The structure consists of three α-helices and adopts an L-shaped form. The overall structure is stabilized by a hydrophobic core, which is formed by hydrophobic residues. The binding affinity between BAF57 HMG and 4WJ DNA is determined as a 295.83 ± 1.05 nM using a fluorescence quenching assay, and the structure revealed 4WJ DNA binding site of BAF57 HMG .
