To comprehensively understand antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) profile in the subtropical drinking water river-reservoir system, this study selected Dongzhen river-reservoir system in Mulan Creek as object to investigate the spatial-temporal characteristics of ARGs diversity, bacterial host and resistance mechanism, and to analyze the key environmental factors driving ARGs profile variation. The results indicated that a total of 440 ARGs were detected in the target system, and the ARGs distribution pattern in the reservoir was attributed to autologous evolution or the comprehensive influence of feeding river system. The predominant bacterial host at different sites showed similar variations to dominated ARGs, and Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes harbored most ARGs at phylum level, which showed the highest proportions of 74%, 37% and 35%, respectively. Antibiotic efflux was the primary resistance mechanism in all samples from wet season (45%-60%), yet the samples from dry season exhibited multiple resistance mechanisms, including inactivation (37%-52%), efflux (44%), and target alteration (43%). The total relative abundances of ARGs in the target system ranged from 0.89 × 10 -2 to 1.71 × 10 -2 , and seasonal variation had a more significant influence on ARGs abundance than spatial variation (R = 0.68, P < 0.01). Environmental factors analysis indicated that the concentrations of nitrite nitrogen and total organic carbon were significant factors explaining ARGs number and various resistance mechanism proportions (P < 0.01), accounting for 48.7% and 61.1% of the variation, respectively; ammonia nitrogen concentration, total organic carbon concentration, temperature and pH were the significant influence factors on the relative abundance of ARGs (P < 0.05), with standardized regression weights of 0.700, 1.414, 1.447, and 1.727, respectively. In summary, in the surface water of the target system, ARGs diversity was primarily driven by ARGs horizontal transfer and antibiotics biosynthesis. Reliable and cost-effective methods for monitoring microbial activity are critical for process control in wastewater treatment plants. The dehydrogenase activity (DHA) test has been recognized as an efficient measure of biological activity due to its simplicity and broad applicability. Nevertheless, the existing DHA test methods suffer from imperfections and are difficult to implement as routine monitoring techniques. In this work, an accurate and cost-effective modified DHA approach was developed and the procedure for the DHA test was critically evaluated with respect to the standard construction, sample pretreatment, incubation and extraction conditions. The feasibility of the modified DHA test was demonstrated by comparison with the oxygen uptake rate and adenosine triphosphate in a sequencing batch reactor. The sensitivities of the two typical tetrazolium salts to toxicant inhibition by heavy metals and antibiotics were compared, revealing that 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) exhibited a higher sensitivity. Furthermore, the sensitivity mechanism of the two DHA tests was elucidated through electrochemical experiments, theoretical analysis and molecular simulations. Both tetrazolium salts were found to be effective artificial electron acceptors due to their low redox potentials. Molecular docking simulations revealed that TTC could outperform other tetrazolium salts in accepting electrons and hydrogens from dehydrogenase. This study aims at evaluating two-phase and single-phase reactors for treating sulfate wastewater with low COD/SO 4 2- ratios. Additionally, a new process of gas stripping in an acidogenesis phase is proposed to reduce hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) inhibition and enhance biomethanation. The two-phase performed better than the single-phase in terms of COD removal, CH 4 production and H 2 S resistance. After 30 days of stripping, the COD and sulfate degradation rates increased from 85.16% to 91.09% and from 49.39% to 63.07% in the two-phase, respectively. In contrast, without stripping, they were from 79.21% to 64.37% and from 50.26% to 53.15% in the single-phase, respectively. The microbial biodiversity was augmented via stripping, including norank&#95;f&#95;&#95;Spirochaetaceae, Petrimonas, Desulfurella and Blvii28&#95;wastewater-sludge&#95;group. Stripping operation enhanced the dissimilatory sulfate reduction, amino acid metabolism and possibly sulfate-dependent anaerobic ammonia oxidation (S-ANAMMOX). With rapid urbanization, microplastics and natural organic matters (NOMs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environment, and microplastics could act as carriers for organic matters in the aqueous solution and may pose a potential risk. In this study, the adsorption behaviors and mechanism of typical NOM, humic acid (HA), on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics were investigated. Various influence factors such as solution pH, ions species and concentrations, particle size, and coexisting surfactants were studied. The results suggested that HA adsorption onto PVC and PS was low pH-dependent, and ion species and concentrations have a significant impact on the adsorption capacity. In addition, the particle size of PVC and PS microplastics exhibited a significant correlation with HA adsorption, and the adsorption process was influenced by the surfactant species and concentrations. Moreover, the adsorption behaviors of HA in different real water environments were tested, and UV aging exhibited the opposite effects on adsorption capacity of PVC and PS. Importance: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy has been the standard treatment for stage II nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) based on data using 2-dimensional conventional radiotherapy. There is limited evidence for the role of chemotherapy with use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)., Objective: To assess whether concurrent chemotherapy can be safely omitted for patients with low-risk stage II/T3N0 NPC treated with IMRT., Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter, open-label, randomized, phase 3, noninferiority clinical trial was conducted at 5 Chinese hospitals, including 341 adult patients with low-risk NPC, defined as stage II/T3N0M0 without adverse features (all nodes <3 cm, no level IV/Vb nodes; no extranodal extension; Epstein-Barr virus DNA <4000 copies/mL), with enrollment between November 2015 and August 2020. The final date of follow-up was March 15, 2022., Interventions: Patients were randomly assigned to receive IMRT alone (n = 172) or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (IMRT with cisplatin, 100 mg/m2 every 3 weeks for 3 cycles [n = 169])., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was 3-year failure-free survival (time from randomization to any disease relapse or death), with a noninferiority margin of 10%. Secondary end points comprised overall survival, locoregional relapse-free survival, distant metastasis-free survival, adverse events, and health-related quality of life (QOL) measured by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30; range, 0-100 points; minimum clinically important difference ≥10 for physical function, symptom control, or health-related QOL; higher score indicates better functioning and global health status or worse symptoms)., Results: Among 341 randomized patients (mean [SD] age, 48 [10] years; 30% women), 334 (98.0%) completed the trial. Median follow-up was 46 months (IQR, 34-58). Three-year failure-free survival was 90.5% for the IMRT-alone group vs 91.9% for the concurrent chemoradiotherapy group (difference, -1.4%; 1-sided 95% CI, -7.4% to ∞; P value for noninferiority, <.001). No significant differences were observed between groups in overall survival, locoregional relapse, or distant metastasis. The IMRT-alone group experienced a significantly lower incidence of grade 3 to 4 adverse events (17% vs 46%; difference, -29% [95% CI, -39% to -20%]), including hematologic toxicities (leukopenia, neutropenia) and nonhematologic toxicities (nausea, vomiting, anorexia, weight loss, mucositis). The IMRT-alone group had significantly better QOL scores during radiotherapy including the domains of global health status, social functioning, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain, insomnia, appetite loss, and constipation., Conclusions and Relevance: Among patients with low-risk NPC, treatment with IMRT alone resulted in 3-year failure-free survival that was not inferior to concurrent chemoradiotherapy., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02633202.

Objective To explore the association between lipid profiles and left ventricular hypertrophy in a Chinese general population. Methods We conducted a retrospective observational study to investigate the relationship between lipid markers [including triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein A-I, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein[a], and composite lipid profiles] and left ventricular hypertrophy. A total of 309,400 participants of two populations (one from Beijing and another from nationwide) who underwent physical examinations at different health management centers between 2009 and 2018 in China were included in the cross-sectional study. 7,475 participants who had multiple physical examinations and initially did not have left ventricular hypertrophy constituted a longitudinal cohort to analyze the association between lipid markers and the new-onset of left ventricular hypertrophy. Left ventricular hypertrophy was measured by echocardiography and defined as an end-diastolic thickness of the interventricular septum or left ventricle posterior wall > 11 mm. The Logistic regression model was used in the cross-sectional study. Cox model and Cox model with restricted cubic splines were used in the longitudinal cohort. Results In the cross-sectional study, for participants in the highest tertile of each lipid marker compared to the respective lowest, triglycerides [odds ratio ( OR ): 1.250, 95% CI : 1.060 to 1.474], HDL-cholesterol ( OR : 0.780, 95% CI : 0.662 to 0.918), and lipoprotein(a) ( OR : 1.311, 95% CI : 1.115 to 1.541) had an association with left ventricular hypertrophy. In the longitudinal cohort, for participants in the highest tertile of each lipid marker at the baseline compared to the respective lowest, triglycerides [hazard ratio ( HR ): 3.277, 95% CI : 1.720 to 6.244], HDL-cholesterol ( HR : 0.516, 95% CI : 0.283 to 0.940), non-HDL-cholesterol ( HR : 2.309, 95% CI : 1.296 to 4.112), apolipoprotein B ( HR : 2.244, 95% CI : 1.251 to 4.032) showed an association with new-onset left ventricular hypertrophy. In the Cox model with forward stepwise selection, triglycerides were the only lipid markers entered into the final model. Conclusion Lipids levels, especially triglycerides, are associated with left ventricular hypertrophy. Controlling triglycerides level potentiate to be a strategy in harnessing cardiac remodeling but deserve to be further investigated.

We unprecedentedly report spatially separated CoN x nanodots on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via a facile formamide condensation reaction. To our knowledge, CoN x -CNTs outperform the activities of current catalysts in peroxymonosulfate activation. CoN x -CNT-oriented radical-free degradation of contaminants shows robust anti-interference capacity toward environmental conditions. Our work will stimulate general interest in designing cost-effective and versatile quantum-/atom-sized catalysts with fully exposed active sites for water purification and beyond.

A fish scale-based porous activated biochar with defined pore size (DPBC) was fabricated by a one-step calcination and activation method. The DPBC possessed an ultrahigh specific surface area of 3370 m 2  g -1 and its pore diameter centered at 1.49 nm which fits into the ciprofloxacin (CIP) molecular dimension, making it an ideal adsorbent for CIP adsorption due to the molecular pore-filling effect. The maximum Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity of DPBC for CIP was higher than 1000 mg g -1 and the equilibrium time was less than 4 h, superior to most adsorbents reported in literature. Thermodynamic analysis indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Notably, fixed-bed experiments showed an encouraging adsorption performance towards CIP, with a high saturated dynamic adsorption capacity of 880.3 mg g -1 . Both Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models predict the fixed-bed column adsorption performance well. This study attempted to shorten the time wasted at the startup of a complete autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process in a tidal flow constructed wetland (TFCW) to achieve higher nitrogen removal rates. Thus, the starting performance and the related microbiological characteristics of different kinds of filter media filling the TFCW were explored at an appropriate drainage rate. The results showed that the physicochemical properties of the filter medium could significantly affect the quantity and activity of the functional microbes (especially ANAMMOX bacteria) enriched in the TFCWs, leading to fluctuations of the starting time and nitrogen transformation rates of the systems filled with five different kinds of filter media. Compared with that of gravel, the quantity and activity of ANAMMOX bacteria in the bed could be enhanced to different degrees as the TFCW was filled with ceramsite, zeolite, broken bricks, and lobster shells. Correspondingly, the starting times of the TFCWs with the CANON process were shortened, and their nitrogen removal performances could also be optimized. When the hydraulic loading rate of the TFCW was 0.96 m 3 ·(m 2 ·d) -1 , the initiation of the CANON process could be accomplished successfully in the system filled with lobster shells within 300 cycles, since AOB and ANAMMOX bacteria could become dominant quickly in the packing bed. Moreover, the TN and NH 4 + -N removal rates could reach up to (88.37±1.19)% and (91.03±0.66)%, respectively, followed by those of broken bricks, zeolite, ceramsite, and gravel.

Electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENFMs) have many superior advantages, such as large specific surface area, high porosity, easy modification, good flexibility, and easy separation for recycling, which are consider as excellent adsorbents. In this paper, the research progress in the adsorption of heavy metals in water treatment by ENFMs is reviewed. Three types of ENFMs, including organic polymer ENFMs, organic polymer/inorganic material composite ENFMs and inorganic ENFMs are summarized, and their adsorption capacities for heavy metals in water are compared. The adsorption selectivity and capacity of ENFMs for heavy metals are depended largely on the type and number of functional groups on the surface of membranes, and usually the more the functional groups, the higher the adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanisms of ENFMs are also mainly determined by the type of functional groups on the membrane. At present, the main challenge is to achieve the mass production of high-quality nanofibers and their actual application in the treatment of heavy metal-containing wastewater. Therefore, more consideration should be focused on the improvement of stability, mechanical strength and reusability of ENFMs. This review may provide an insight for the development of ENFMs-based adsorbents for heavy metals separation and water purification in the future., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. This study was conducted to explore the startup characteristics and stability of a hybrid constructed wetland (HCW) system with a denitrifying dephosphatation process, which was composed of two tidal flow-constructed wetlands (termed T-A and T-B). As the system was operated according to the two-time feeding tidal flow operation mode, denitrifying dephosphatation and nitrification could be respectively enhanced in T-A and T-B, and the HCW achieved ideal simultaneous denitrification and phosphorus removal effects when treating domestic sewage. The introduction of periodical carbon source supplements for phosphorus harvesting alleviated excessive phosphorus accumulation in T-A and increased the storage of PHB within denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms (DPAOs). Subsequently, a stable and efficient denitrifying phosphorus removal effect could be guaranteed to some extent as the HCW system was operated during the test. As the phosphorus harvesting cycle length was 30 d, the mean phosphorus recovery efficiency of the HCW system was 63.97% throughout the experiment. Regarding the typical cycle, the mean TP and NO x - -N removal efficiencies of T-A could respectively achieve (97.86±0.70)% and (98.29±2.62)% during the denitrifying dephosphatation process, and the amounts of phosphorus release and PHB synthesis in T-A could also reach up to (1486.29±123.25) mg and (4.43±0.57) mmol·g -1 , respectively, during the phosphorus harvesting process. Meanwhile, the utilization rate of the supplementary carbon in the system was (94.65±2.66)%. To summarize, this study offers a new method for simultaneous denitrification and phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands, and expands the development and application range of phosphorus recovery processes.

Semiconductor photocatalysis has long been considered as a promising approach for remediation of polluted water. However, the high recombination rate of electrons and holes, as well as a low reaction rate, have impeded its large-scale applications. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop appropriate photocatalysts for promoting its practical application. In this study, a novel TiO 2 /SiO 2 /carbon electrospun nanofiber mat (TSC NFM) with flexibility and porous hierarchy has been successfully designed and fabricated by a facile method of electrospinning and carbonization. Characterization results show that the TSC NFM consists of closely-packed and well-distributed anatase (TiO 2 ) nanocrystals, amorphous SiO 2 nanoparticles, and carbon with interconnected meso- and macro-pores. The photocatalytic performance of the TSC NFM was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B and 4-nitrophenol in batch systems. The results show that TSC NFM exhibits a higher photocatalytic activity than TiO 2 /SiO 2 nanofiber mat, which does not contain carbon. The enhanced performance of the TSC NFM can be attributed to the improved adsorption capacity toward the organic pollutants due to the presence of carbon and to the enhanced interfacial charge separation between TiO 2 nanoparticles and carbon. Besides, the as-prepared TSC NFM displays good stability and reusability. Notably, the flexible TSC NFM can be used in a continuous-flow reactor to efficiently treat wastewater. In this study, a highly active electro-Fenton catalyst, spongy zero-valent iron (ZVI), has been developed at first via in-situ synthesis of ZVI nanoparticles (NPs) on an electrospun three-dimensional (3D) nanofiber network. The spongy ZVI effectively overcame the defects of easy aggregation of ZVI NPs and ferric sludge accumulation during the electro-catalytic process. Then, a three-dimensional electro-Fenton (3D-EF) system using the as-fabricated spongy ZVI as particle catalytic electrodes was designed, which presented a significant synergistic effect of adsorption and electro-catalytic oxidation on the enhanced removal of a widely used antibiotic, sulfathiazole (STZ) from water. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the spongy ZVI had a relative high adsorption affinity towards STZ with about 50% of the total removal within 240 min, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached in 570 min. Hydroxyl radical (OH) was produced in the 3D-EF system with spongy ZVI catalyst, and almost 100% STZ was removed within 5 min. Reactive oxygen species analysis verified that OH was mainly responsible for the STZ degradation. Based on intermediates identified by a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), three pathways for the electro-Fenton oxidative degradation of STZ were proposed., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Municipal wastewater effluent is increasingly used as reclaimed water and source water for downstream areas. Scholars are beginning to study the potential of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) as a precursor to the formation of nitrogen disinfection by-products (DBP). In order to explore the mechanism of pre-ozonation coupled with enhanced coagulation on DON in the secondary effluent, the distributions of molecular weight and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of DON were analyzed. Disinfection by-product formation potential from chlorination was also investigated. Lastly, the composition and chemical structure of DON before and after coagulation were studied in combination with 3DEEM. Our results showed that pre-ozonation followed by coagulation with PACl significantly enhanced the removal of DON and mitigated DBP formation potentials. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study:① The tested effluent was very hard as indicated by total hardness and high calcium concentrations, and the pH had an important effect on pre-ozonation enhanced coagulation. As pH was decreased, the rates of DON, DOC and UV 254 removal increased. At pH 6.2, the rate of DON removal was maximal, and a 3.7 fold increase in removal-rate was achieved. ② Calcium played a critical role in pre-ozonation enhanced coagulation. Zeta potentials and calcium concentrations were substantially affected at higher ozone doses. At ozone dosage of 8 mg·L -1 , Zeta potentials increased from -33 to -8 mV, and calcium concentrations decreased from 116 to 89 mg·L -1 . The ratio of calcium hardness to DOC was relatively high in this study, approaching 24 mg·mg -1 (CaCO 3 /DOC). Thus, pre-ozonation promoted the removal of DON by coagulation. ③ Large molecular weight and hydrophobic DON were easier to remove by coagulation. Ozonation modified the DON characteristics to become more hydrophilic and smaller in molecular weight. Coagulation reduced overall DBP formation potentials to less than 20%. Pre-ozonation enhanced coagulation decreased overall DBP formation potentials by more than 45%. ④ Finally, the 3DEEM spectra indicated that the formation potentials and DON characteristics, due to disinfection, were related to three main peaks, which corresponded to tryptophan-based proteins, aromatic proteins, and fulvic acids.

Objective: This study was aimed to investigate the association between serum against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antibodies levels and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients' prognosis., Methods: Blood samples from 140 primary NPC patients without metastasis were collected before and after treatment. The titers of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA were detected by immunoenzyme assay, and the levels of NA1/IgA and Rta/IgG were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All patients received consequent follow-up and long-term efficacy and survival assessment., Results: Post-treatment serum levels of VCA/IgA, EA/IgA, NA1/IgA and Rta/IgG in NPC patients significantly decreased than those before treatment, while had significantly higher than those in control individuals (P < 0.05). Patients in remission had significantly lower pre-treatment serum levels of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA than patients with progression (P < 0.05). None of serum levels of VCA/IgA, EA/IgA, NA1/IgA and Rta/IgG was associated with the 3-year overall survival (P > 0.05). The progression-free survivals were significantly lower in patients with higher pre-treatment VCA/IgA (> or = 1 : 320) and EA/IgA (> or = 1:80) levels than in those with lower VCA/IgA ( < 1 : 320) and EA/IgA (< 1 : 80) levels, respectively (61.8% vs. 86.5% , 61.3% vs. 86.5%, P < 0.001). Cox regression model analysis demonstrated that pre-treatment serum VCA/IgA level was an independent risk factor for progression-free survival (HR = 3.80, P = 0.001)., Conclusion: Anti-EBV VCA/IgA and EA/IgA might provide information regarding the prognosis of NPC patients.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is characterized by its distinct racial and geographical distribution with a multifactorial etiology. It has been well accepted that NPC is related to Epstein-Barr(EB) virus infection but environmental and genetics factors also play critical roles. Among host genetic markers associated with NPC, the highly variable class I human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes on chromosome 6 (6p21.3) have shown a strong and consistent association with NPC risk. As the consequence of new generation DNA sequencing technologies used in HLA genotyping, the number of the reported HLA new alleles is dramaticllyincreasing, and more full length sequences of HLA alleles have been reported. The significant association between HLA genes and NPC has been identifiedin a series of studies, including HLA association study, linkage disequilibrium study for microsatellite markers, and genome wide association study. In this review, we summarize association studies between HLA and NPC to evaluate the role of genetic polymorphisms in NPC development and illustrate the new clues of HLA association for deepexploration.

Objective: We evaluated the accuracy and efficiency of computational inference methods for haplotype on estimate HLA-A-B-C haplotype frequencies by compared with the haplotypes manually defined in a family-base dataset., Methods: 558 individuals with pedigree information were selected, and their haplotyps were compared with the data obtained by the following three method: the Expectation-Maximization (EM) and Excoffier-Laval-Balding (ELB)algorithms using the AELEQUIN software, and the SAS/Genetics PROC HAPLOTYPE method., Results: After performing the SAS/Genetics method, and the Expectation-Maximization (EM) and Excoffier-Laval-Balding (ELB) algorithms using the AELEQUIN software, 248, 247, and 238 different haplotypes were obtained respectively. The accuracy rates of these three methods were 88.5%, 89.1%, and 90.3% respectively. There are no significant different in the accuracy and estimated haplotype frequency comparisons among any two of these computational inference methods., Conclusion: High accuracy haplotype frequency estimate rates could be obtained by these three computational inference methods, and there are no significant difference in the comparison of haplotypes estimated by SAS/Genetics, the EM and ELB algorithms using the AELEQUIN software. However, ELB algorithm shows better performance than EM algorithm and SAS/Genetics PROC HAPLOTYPE method for haplotype frequencies estimation in general.

The invasion of biological organisms via ballast water has created threats to the environment and human health. In this study, a cost-effective electrochemical disinfection reactor was developed to inactivate Escherichia coli, one of the IMO-regulated indicator microbes, in simulated ballast water. The complete inactivation of E. coli could be achieved within a very short time (150, 120, or 60 s) with an energy consumption as low as 0.0090, 0.0074 or 0.0035 kWh/m(3) for ballast water containing E. coli at concentrations of 10(8), 10(7) and 10(6) CFU/100 mL, respectively. Electrochemical chlorination was the major disinfection mechanism in chloride-abundant electrolytes, whereas oxidants such as ozone and free radicals contributed to 20% of the disinfection efficiency in chloride-free electrolytes. A readily prepared nanostructured zirconia-based sorbent was developed and demonstrated to be effective on adsorption of monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) from water with a capacity of 1.43 mmol MMA/g sorbent, which is much higher than that of sorbents reported. It was found that the MMA uptake is highly pH-dependent. Better adsorption is obtained at lower pH, and the optimal pH is from 2.5 to 3.5. Most of the MMA uptake occurs rapidly in the first 48 h, followed by a relatively slow process. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm can be well described by pseudo-first order rate model and Langmuir equation, respectively. The temperature does not great influence on the adsorption isotherm. The MMA adsorption is independent on background electrolyte concentration, which implies the MMA forms inner-sphere complexes on the sorbent. The presence of humic acid does not pose noticeable effect on the adsorption. The coexisting HCO(3)(-) or F(-) obviously hinders the adsorption of MMA; however, the existence of PO(4)(3-) slightly enhances the adsorption. FTIR and XPS analyses demonstrated that hydroxyl and sulfur-containing functional groups are involved in the uptake of MMA. Hexavalent chromium represents higher toxicity in aqueous solutions. It can be removed by such low-cost biosorbents as Sargassum sp. In this study, X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and quantum chemistry (QC) calculation were used to study the interactions between hexavalent chromium and Sargassum sp. during the biosorption. It was found that most of the adsorbed Cr(VI) ions were reduced to Cr(III) after the biosorption. The electrons for the reduction of Cr(VI) were possibly supplied from the Sargassum biomass, some organic compounds of which were oxidized. Cr(III) ions were coordinated with the oxygen atoms from either carboxyl or hydroxyl functional groups to form an octahedral structural metal complex. The coordination numbers of the formed Cr complex were 4-6, and bond length of Cr-O was 1.98Å. QC calculation proved the possible formation of the Cr(III) metal complex, and revealed that carboxyl from biomass could be strongly bound with Cr(III). Arsenic contamination in water, especially in groundwater, has been recognized as an important issue of concern because of its high mobility and toxicity. In this study, N-methylglucamine was immobilized onto crosslinked chitosan beads via atom transfer radical polymerization for an efficient adsorption of arsenic. It was demonstrated that the immobilization significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity. The uptake onto the adsorbent was highly pH dependent, and a maximum adsorption capacity as high as 69.28 mg/g was obtained at the optimum pH of 5. Most of arsenate was rapidly adsorbed in the first 5h, and the adsorption equilibrium was established in 16 h, which was well described by an intraparticle diffusion model. The adsorbent exhibited a great uptake of the humic acid, which led to a decrease in the adsorption of arsenate. The effects of competitive anions on the adsorption exhibited the following descending sequence: sulfate ≫ phosphate>fluoride (negligible effect). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the arsenic adsorption resulted from the presence of tertiary amine and hydroxyl functional groups grafted on the crosslinked chitosan., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. Boron can pose adverse effects on human beings and plants species. It exists in various water environments and is difficult to be removed by conventional technologies. In this study, an efficient and environmental friendly sorbent was fabricated by the functionalization of a natural biopolymer, chitosan, with N-methylglucamine through atom transfer radical polymerization. The SEM and BET studies revealed that the sorbent had a rougher surface and a more porous structure than the chitosan. At the optimum neutral pH, the maximum sorption capacity was as high as 3.25 mmol/g, much higher than the commercial boron selective resins (e.g., Amberlite IRA-743) and many other synthesized sorbents. Almost 90% of boron sorption occurred within 8 h and the equilibrium was established in 12 h, which was well described by an intraparticle surface diffusion model. The presence of sodium chloride and sodium nitrate had no effect on the boron removal. The boron concentration in seawater could be reduced to less than 0.5 mg/L from 4.8 mg/L when a sorbent dosage of 1.2 g/L was used. Methylated arsenic in groundwater has caused a series of health problems to human beings. A N-methylglucamine modified chitosan polymeric adsorbent was successfully developed for efficient adsorption of methylated arsenic from water solution. Adsorption behaviors of two common methylated arsenic species, monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), onto the adsorbent were investigated in this paper. The surface modification increased the adsorption capabilities for the arsenic. The uptake of MMA was higher than that of DMA throughout all pH values. The maximum adsorption capacities were 15.4 mg/g for MMA and 7.1 mg/g for DMA, exhibiting competitive advantages with other reported materials. The affinity of these arsenic species for the adsorbent followed a pattern of MMA > DMA. The adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 20 h. The uptake of MMA and DMA was dependent upon the concentration of background electrolytes, indicating the formation of outer-sphere complexes of both organoarsenic species with the adsorbent during the adsorption. The existence of natural organic matter and competitive anions cause decrease in the uptake of both arsenic species. Furthermore, the simultaneous uptake of organic contaminants such as humic acid was observed. In this study, a zirconium nanoparticle sorbent for significantly enhanced adsorption of arsenate (As(V)) was successfully synthesized. The characterization of the zirconium nanoparticle sorbent and its adsorption behavior for arsenate were investigated. The HRTEM micrographs showed that the sorbent was nanoscale with particle sizes ranging from 60 to 90nm. The thermal gravimetric and elemental analyses indicated that the sorbent had a molecular formula of Zr(2)(OH)(6)SO(4)·3H(2)O. The X-ray diffraction study revealed that the sorbent was amorphous. The potentiometric titration study demonstrated the surface charge density of the sorbent decreased with an increase in solution pH, and the pH of zero point charge of the sorbent was around 2.85. The kinetics study showed that most of the uptake took place in the first 6h, and the adsorption equilibrium was obtained within 12h. The optimal pH for As(V) adsorption was between 2.5 and 3.5. The Langmuir equation well described the adsorption isotherm; the maximum adsorption capacity of 256.4mg As/g was found at the optimal pH, better than most of sorbents available in the market. The presence of fluoride or nitrate did not obviously affect the adsorption of As(V) onto the sorbent; however, the existence of humic acid, phosphate or silicate in aqueous solution significantly reduced the uptake of As(V). The humic acid did not cause the reduction of the As(V). The FTIR and XPS spectroscopic analyses revealed that surface hydroxyl and sulfur-containing groups played important roles in the adsorption., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)

Extensive usage of tetracycline has resulted in its contamination in surface water and groundwater. The adsorption of tetracycline on zeolite beta was systematically investigated for the decontamination of the antibiotic polluted water in this study. Ninety percent of uptake by the zeolite beta occured in 0.25h, and the adsorption equilibrium was obtained within 3h, which was well described by an intraparticle diffusion model. The adsorption generally increased when pH was increased from 4.0 to 5.0, and then decreased significantly as the pH was further increased, which was caused by the pH-dependent speciation of tetracycline and surface charge of zeolite beta. Both Freundlich and Langmuir equations well described the adsorption isotherm. A thermodynamic analysis showed that the sorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Aluminum atoms in the zeolite played a crucial role in the uptake; the adsorption increased with the increasing aluminum content in zeolite. The UV-Visible spectroscopy study showed that the spectra of tetracycline changed upon the interaction with zeolite beta, which could be ascribed to the formation of complexes of tetracycline and aluminum atoms in the zeolite surface. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy study further confirmed the participation of Al in the tetracycline adsorption. Ballast water is essential in maintaining the balance and structural integrity of ships during voyage. However, it has created biological invasion threats to the ocean environment. An innovative electrochemical technology was developed in this study. The microorganisms regulated by the International Maritime Organization (D2) were used as the target organisms. It was found that the required energy to meet the D2 was below 0.006 kWh/m3. The size of disinfector (m3) was about 0.5% of treatment flow rate (m3/h). The complete disappearance of chlorine in seawater was achieved after three days. The ballast tank corrosion was not worsened due to the application of technology. The ecotoxicity studies showed no toxic effect on fish, invertebrate, and algae. Finally, the environmental risk assessment showed the treated water did not pose threats to the environment. Objective: To investigate the value of combined detection of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) VCA/IgA, EA/IgA, Rta/IgG and EBNA1/IgA in serodiagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC)., Methods: Serum samples obtained from 211 untreated patients with NPC and 203 non-NPC ENT patients were examined for the presence of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA by immunoenzymatic assay and for Rta/IgG and EBNA1/IgA by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated to confirm the cutoff values of different antibodies. The evaluation indexes of combined detection of multiple antibodies used for serodiagnosis of NPC were calculated with compounded positive judgment method., Results: Compared to a single antibody, combined detection achieved a higher sensitivity and specificity. The sensitivity of VCA/IgA + Rta/IgG + EBNA1/IgA (98.1%) was higher than the other 3 combinations with a specificity, accuracy, Youden index and positive predictive value (PPV) of 88.7%, 93.5%, 0.868 and 90.0%, respectively. The combination of EA/IgA+Rta/IgG+EBNA1/IgA had the highest specificity (95.1%), accuracy (94.9%), Youden index (0.899) and PPV (95.2%), with a sensitivity of 94.8%, suggesting its higher accuracy in the serodiagnosis of NPC. Combined detection of the 4 antibodies had the highest sensitivity (98.6%) with a specificity, accuracy, Youden index and PPV of 88.2%, 93.5%, 0.868 and 89.7%, respectively., Conclusions: Combined detection of Rta/IgG against immediate early antigens, EA/IgA against early antigens, VCA/IgA against late antigens, and EBNA1/IgA against latent antigens provides better understanding of the expression profiles of EBV lytic and latent antigens with excellent complementarity, and may serve as an optimal combination for NPC serodiagnosis.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the clinical stages of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antibodies Rta/IgG, EBNA1/IgA, VCA/IgA and EA/IgA., Methods: Serum samples obtained from 211 untreated patients with NPC categorized by the project of 92' stage were examined for the presence of the EBV antibodies Rta/IgG and EBNA1/IgA by enzyme-linked immnunosorbent assay (ELISA) and for VCA/IgA and EA/IgA by immunoenzymatic assay. The positive rates and antibody levels in the NPC patients in different TNM stages and clinical stages were analyzed statistically., Results: No significant difference in Rta/IgG rA value was found in the NPC patients in different TNM or clinical stages (P>0.05). The EBNA1/IgA rA value was significantly lower in stage T1, N0, and clinical stage I than in the other corresponding T stages, N stages and other clinical stage (P<0.05). The antibody titers of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA differed significantly between the N stages and the clinical stages (P<0.05)., Conclusion: The expression of EBV Rta/IgG is not associated with NPC stage. The expression of EBNA1/IgA is relatively low in early NPC. The antibody level of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA are significantly correlated to the degree of neck lymph node metastasis, and might be helpful to classify the clinical stages of NPC.

Objective: This study was aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of combined determination of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antibodies for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), including immunoglobulin (Ig) A against EBV capsid antigens (VCA), IgA against early antigens (EA), IgG against BRLF1 transcription activator (Rta) and IgA against EBV nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA1), assessed with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve based on logistic regression., Methods: Serum samples derived from 211 untreated patients with NPC and 203 non-NPC ENT patients were examined for the presence of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA by immunoenzymatic assay, Rta/IgG and EBNA1/IgA by enzyme-linked immnunosorbent assay (ELISA). The different Logistic regression models were established for various combined determinations of antibodies, respectively. Using the predicted probability as the analyzed variable, ROC curve was applied to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of different combined determinations., Results: The sensitivity of VCA/IgA (98.1%) and the specificity of EA/IgA (98.5%) were the highest while detecting solely. The results which were analyzed by ROC curve based on Logistic regression showed that the sensitivity and specificity were improved. In two-marker combinations, VCA/IgA + Rta/IgG whose area under ROC curve (AUC) was 0.991 had the highest diagnostic accuracy, and its sensitivity, specificity and Youden index were 94.8%, 98.0% and 0.928 respectively. No significant difference of AUC were found comparing VCA/IgA + Rta/IgG with VCA/IgA + Rta/IgG + EBNA1/IgA and four-marker combination( P > 0.05), of which sensitivity, specificity and Youden index were 94.8%, 98.5%, 0.933 and 96.7%, 97.0%, 0.937, respectively., Conclusion: The approach of ROC curve based on Logistic regression can improve synthetic efficiency for combined determination of multiple markers. The combined determination of VCA/IgA and Rta/IgG with a complementary effect is optimal for NPC serodiagnosis.

In this study, a zirconium-based magnetic sorbent is developed by a coprecipitation technology. The characterization of the sorbent and its adsorption behavior are systematically investigated. It is shown that the sorbent has a small mean diameter of 543.7 nm, a specific surface area of 151 m(2)/g, and a pH(zpc) of 7. The sorbent has a rough surface and many pores developed on the surface. It has a molecular formula of ZrO(OH)(2) x 1.6 Fe(3)O(4) x 2.5 H(2)O, which was determined by the thermal gravimetric analysis, the elemental analysis, and the digestion experiments. The sorption equilibrium can be reached within 25 h. Better adsorption can be obtained at lower pH, and the optimal initial pH is from 2.6 to 3.3. The maximum adsorption capacity of 45.6 mg-As/g is achieved, which is much higher than many reported sorbents. FTIR spectra analysis indicates that -OH groups play an important role in the uptake. Some of the arsenate are reduced to arsenite after its adsorption onto the magnetic sorbent; the divalent iron in the sorbent may provide electrons for the reduction. A conceptual model for the adsorption of arsenate by the magnetic sorbent is proposed to illustrate the mechanism.

Objective: This study was aimed to investigate the clinical value of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) Rta/IgG in the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC)., Methods: Serum samples derived from 211 untreated patients with NPC, 413 subjects including 203 non-NPC ENT patients and 210 healthy volunteers as control were examined for the presence of antibodies directed against Rta/IgG by using enzyme-linked immnunosorbent assay (ELISA). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to perform methodical evaluation of this tumor marker., Results: The rA value median of Rta/IgG in NPC group was significantly higher than one in control group (P < 0.001). The area under ROC was 0.933. The sensitivity and specificity of this marker were 90.5% and 90.1%, respectively, when the best cutoff value was defined., Conclusion: Rta/IgG detected with ELISA method is a new target of EBV, and may be one of important marker for NPC diagnosis.

Arsenate removal by a calcium alginate-encapsulated magnetic sorbent was studied. The morphology, microstructure, and composition properties of the sorbent were explored using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The SEM study demonstrates that there are many protuberances and pores on the sorbent surface; the XRD analysis reveals that the sorbent consists of Fe(3)O(4). The EDX analysis indicates that the adsorption on the surfaces of sorbent is highly location dependent. The interaction characteristics between the arsenic and the functional groups on the sorbent were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These studies indicate that the lattice oxygen in magnetite and the oxygen in hydroxyl of the calcium alginate play important roles in the sorption of arsenate ions onto the sorbent. More importantly, the XPS analysis demonstrates that the arsenate is reduced to arsenite after its adsorption onto the sorbent. It is proposed that divalent iron and the alcoholic group in alginate provide electrons to arsenate. A conceptual model for the adsorption is proposed to illustrate the mechanisms.

This study was aimed to investigate the prevalence and genotype distribution of heterozygotes in beta-thalassemia combining deletional alpha-thalassemia by using molecular detection and haematological methods. Three common deletions of alpha-thalassemia were detected by using gap-PCR. The mutations of beta-thalassemia were identified by using PCR with reverse dot blot hybridization. The routine analysis of blood cells was carried out. The results indicated that 15 cases from the 81 beta-thalassemia traits were found to be the compound heterozygosity for beta-thalassemia and alpha-thalassemia with 9 different types of gene defects with 18.52% detection rate. There were 6 cases (7.41%) of beta-thalassemia heterozygote combining alpha-thalassemia-1 gene (--(SEA)/alphaalpha), 8 cases (9.88%) combining with alpha-thalassemia-2 gene including 6 (7.41%) right ward deletion (-alpha(3.7)/alphaalpha) and 2 (2.47%) left ward deletion (-alpha(4.2)/alphaalpha), and 1 case (1.23%) combining deletional HbH gene (--(SEA)/-alpha(3.7)). No significant differences were found between beta-thalassemia heterozygotes combining deletional alpha-thalassemia and pure beta-thalassemia in all RBC parameters. It is concluded that the incidence of beta-thalassemia heterozygotes combining with deletional alpha-thalassemia is frequent in Wuzhou city. The hematological analysis can not give specificity for diagnosing these dual heterozygotes. Gap-PCR as a routine method for thalassemia screening has the advantages in reducing the possibility of failing to detect the combining heterozygosity for beta-thalassemia and alpha-thalassemia. It is more useful for genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis of this disease.

The pore size distribution and porosity of aerobic granules with different diameters were evaluated using size-exclusion chromatography, in which polyethylene glycols and distilled water were, respectively, used as solute and mobile phase. The porosity of the aerobic granules varied from 68% to 93% and the exclusion limit, expressed as molecular mass, showed a significant difference. For the small-size granules with a diameter of 0.2-0.6mm, molecules greater than 137,000Da could not penetrate the pores, while the exclusion limits of the middle-size granules with a diameter of 0.6-0.9mm and large-size ones with a diameter of 0.9-1.5mm were 76,000 and 29,000Da, respectively. The extracellular polymeric substances of the granules might clog the pores and might be responsible for the reduced porosity. A correlation between the bioactivity and available porosity of the aerobic granules was found. The experimental results show that the size-exclusion chromatography was appropriate for elucidating the pore size distribution and porosity of the aerobic granules.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a complex disease caused by an interaction of EBV chronic infection, environment and host genes, in a multi-step process of carcinogenesis. However, which genetic factors play an important role in the development of chronic EBV infection and NPC remain elusive. The objective of this study is to identify genetic variations associated with two key clinical stages of NPC development: persistent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection of nasopharyngeal epithelia and progression to NPC. We inspected a NPC-associated region on the short arm of chromosome 4 previously implicated by a genome-wide linkage analysis of familial NPC. We determined genotypes for 319 alleles in 34 microsatellite markers spanning an 18 Mb region in 350 NPC cases, 288 individuals with IgA antibodies to EBV capsid antigen (IgA/VCA+) and 346 controls seronegative for IgA antibodies to EBV capsid antigen (IgA/VCA-). The cases and controls were Han Chinese from Wuzhou city and Cangwu County, Guangxi province where the incidence of NPC is as high as 25-50 per 100,000 individuals. Comparing NPC cases to IgA/VCA+ subjects, we found 9 alleles marginally associated with developing NPC from IgA+ status, 5 for risk (OR=1.51-5.36, P=0.01-0.03) and 4 for restrictive (OR=0.3-0.71, P=0.02-0.045). Comparing IgA/VCA+ subjects and IgA/VCA- controls, and comparing all IgA seropositives with and without NPC to IgA seronegatives revealed 12 significant and 3 highly significant (P<0.01) alleles associated with IgA+ serostatus in the two comparing groups. Alleles D4S3241-136 (P=0.004, OR=1.91, 95% CI=1.2-3.0) and D4S3347-213 (P=0.001, OR=1.6, 95% CI=1.2-2.1) were for risk. Allele D4S174-202 (P=0.001, OR=0.5, 95%CI=0.3-0.7) was restrictive. However, statistical significance was lost for all when corrected for multiple comparisons test. Our study could not affirm the genetic association within this region with NPC as did another pedigree study, but provide an opportunity for further gene discovery in this highly endemic NPC population and suggest that this region warrants further study.

Background: To study the deletion and mutation in carboxy terminal region of LMP1 gene derived from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in Guangdong and Guangxi, the high risk areas of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in China., Methods: LMP1 gene carboxy terminal region was amplified from nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues by PCR, and then cloned and sequenced., Results: Of the 20 cases, 17 were LMP1 positive. In all positive cases, only 1 case did not show deletion. Four positive cases were chosen for DNA sequencing, The rusult showed that all the four cases had mutation and the 30bp deletion., Conclusions: High frequency of deletion and mutation in LMP1 gene of nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues was found in Guangdong and Guangxi. Whether it related to the high incidence of NPC should be further studied.
