Type-II Dirac/Weyl points, although impermissible in particle physics due to Lorentz covariance, were uncovered in condensed matter physics, driven by fundamental interest and intriguing applications of topological materials. Recently, there has been a surge of exploration of such generic points using various engineered platforms including photonic crystals, waveguide arrays, metasurfaces, magnetized plasma and polariton micropillars, aiming towards relativistic quantum emulation and understanding of exotic topological phenomena. Such endeavors, however, have focused mainly on linear topological states in real or synthetic Dirac/Weyl materials. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear valley Hall edge states (VHESs) in laser-writing anisotropic photonic lattices hosting type-II Dirac points. These self-trapped VHESs, manifested as topological gap quasi-solitons, are fundamentally distinct from their linear counterparts in type-I lattices and from all previously found topological solitons. Our finding may provide a route for understanding nonlinear phenomena in Lorentz-violating topological systems and for developing advanced light sources from topological insulator lasers., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

In this work, the two-photon-exchange (TPE) effects in $e^+e^- \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^-$ at small $\sqrt{s}$ are discussed within a hadronic model. In the limit $m_e\rightarrow 0$, the TPE contribution to the amplitude can be described by one scalar function $\overline{c}_{1}^{(2\gamma)}$. The ratio between this function and the corresponding contribution in one-photon exchange $c_{1}^{(1\gamma)}$ reflects all the information of the TPE corrections. The numerical results on this ratio are presented and an artificial function is used to fit the numerical results. The latter can be used conveniently in the further experimental data analysis. The numerical results show the asymmetry of the differential cross sections in $e^+e^- \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^-$ is about $-4\%$ at $\sqrt{s}\sim 0.7$ GeV., Comment: 8 figures

Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) is a universal framework which could in principle describe phase transition phenomenon in any system with required symmetry properties. However, a conflicting observation termed anti-KZ behavior has been reported in the study of ferroelectric phase transition, in which slower driving results in more topological defects [S. M. Griffin, et al. Phys. Rev. X. 2, 041022 (2012)]. Although this research is significant, its experimental simulations have been scarce until now. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate anti-KZ behavior under noisy control field in three kinds of quantum phase transition protocols using a single trapped Yb ion. The density of defects is studied as a function of the quench time and the noise intensity. We experimentally verify that the optimal quench time to minimize excitation scales as a universal power law of the noise intensity. Our research sets a stage for quantum simulation of such anti-KZ behavior in two-level systems and reveals the limitations of the adiabatic protocols such as quantum annealing.

Quantum computation with quantum gates induced by geometric phases is regarded as a promising strategy in fault tolerant quantum computation, due to its robustness against operational noises. However, because of the parametric restriction of previous schemes, the main robust advantage of holonomic quantum gates is smeared. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a solution scheme, demonstrating nonadiabatic holonomic single qubit quantum gates with optimal control in a trapped Yb ion based on three level systems with resonant drives, which also hold the advantages of fast evolution and convenient implementation. Compared with corresponding previous geometric gates and conventional dynamic gates, the superiority of our scheme is that it is more robust against control amplitude errors, which is confirmed by the measured gate infidelity through both quantum process tomography and random benchmarking methods. In addition, we also outline that nontrivial two qubit holonomic gates can also be realized within current experimental technologies. Therefore, our experiment validates the feasibility for this robust and fast holonomic quantum computation strategy.

Different from the Fermi surface of the type-I Dirac semimetal being a point, that of the type-II Dirac semimetal is a pair of crossing lines because the Dirac cone is tilted with open and hyperbolic isofrequency contours. As an optical analogy, type-II Dirac photonic lattices have been also designed. Here, we report type-II Dirac cones in Lieb-like photonic lattices composed of identical waveguide channels, and the anisotropy of the band structure is due to neither the refractive index change nor the environment, but only the spatial symmetry of the lattice; therefore, the proposal is advantage and benefits experimental observation. Conical diffractions and Klein tunneling in the parametric type-II photonic lattice are investigated in detail. Our results provide a simple and experimental feasible platform to study two-dimensional topological photonic and other nonrelativistic phenomena around type-II Dirac cones., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Multi-fidelity optimization methods promise a high-fidelity optimum at a cost only slightly greater than a low-fidelity optimization. This promise is seldom achieved in practice, due to the requirement that low- and high-fidelity models correlate well. In this article, we propose an efficient bi-fidelity shape optimization method for turbulent fluid-flow applications with Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) as the high- and low-fidelity models within a hierarchical-Kriging surrogate modelling framework. Since the LES-RANS correlation is often poor, we use the full LES flow-field at a single point in the design space to derive a custom-tailored RANS closure model that reproduces the LES at that point. This is achieved with machine-learning techniques, specifically sparse regression to obtain high corrections of the turbulence anisotropy tensor and the production of turbulence kinetic energy as functions of the RANS mean-flow. The LES-RANS correlation is dramatically improved throughout the design-space. We demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method in a proof-of-concept shape optimization of the well-known periodic-hill case. Standard RANS models perform poorly in this case, whereas our method converges to the LES-optimum with only two LES samples.

Treating the cosmological constant as a dynamical variable, we investigate the thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) of a charged AdS black hole (BH) in the Rastall gravity. We determine the energy momentum relation of charged fermion at the horizon of the BH by using the Dirac equation. Based on this relation, we show that the first law of thermodynamics (FLT) still holds as a fermion is absorbed by the BH. However, the entropy of both the extremal and near-extremal BH decreases in the irreversible process, which means that the second law of thermodynamics (SLT) is violated. Furthermore, we verify the validity of the WCCC by the minimum values of the metric function h(r) at its final state. For the extremal charged AdS BH in the Rastall gravity, we find that the WCCC is valid always since the BH is extreme. While for the case of near-extremal BH, we find the WCCC could be violable in the extended phase space (EPS), depending on the value of the parameters of the BH and their variations., Comment: 4 figures; accepted by Chin.Phys. Topological lasers based on topologically protected edge states offer unique features and enhanced robustness of operation in comparison with conventional lasers, even in the presence of disorder, edge deformation, and localized defects. Here we propose a new class of topological lasers arising from the valley Hall edge states, which does not require external magnetic fields or dynamical modulations of the device parameters. Specifically, topological lasing occurs at domain walls between two honeycomb waveguide arrays with broken spatial inversion symmetry. Two types of valley Hall edge lasing modes are found by shaping the gain landscape along the domain walls. In the presence of uniform losses and two-photon absorption, lasing in edge states results in the formation of stable nonlinear dissipative excitations localized on the edge of the structure, even if it has complex geometry and even if it is finite. Robustness of lasing states is demonstrated in both periodic and finite structures, where such states can circumvent sharp corners without scattering loss or radiation into the bulk. The photonic structure and mechanism proposed here for topological lasing is fundamentally different from those previously demonstrated topological lasers and can be used for fabrication of practical topological lasers of various geometries., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We establish experimentally a photonic super-honeycomb lattice (sHCL) by use of a cw-laser writing technique, and thereby demonstrate two distinct flatband line states that manifest as noncontractible-loop-states in an infinite flatband lattice. These localized states (straight and zigzag lines) observed in the sHCL with tailored boundaries cannot be obtained by superposition of conventional compact localized states because they represent a new topological entity in flatband systems. In fact, the zigzag-line states, unique to the sHCL, are in contradistinction with those previously observed in the Kagome and Lieb lattices. Their momentum-space spectrum emerges in the high-order Brillouin zone where the flat band touches the dispersive bands, revealing the characteristic of topologically protected bandcrossing. Our experimental results are corroborated by numerical simulations based on the coupled mode theory. This work may provide insight to Dirac like 2D materials beyond graphene.

Edge states emerge in diverse areas of science, offering new opportunities for the development of novel electronic or optoelectronic devices, sound and light propagation controls in acoustics and photonics. Previous experiments on edge states and exploration of topological phases in photonics were carried out mostly in linear regimes, but the current belief is that nonlinearity introduces new striking features into physics of edge states, lead-ing to the formation of edge solitons, optical isolation, and topological lasing, to name a few. Here we experimentally demonstrate edge solitons at the zigzag edge of a reconfigurable photonic graphene lattice created via the effect of electromagneti-cally induced transparency in an atomic vapor cell with controllable nonlinearity . To obtain edge solitons, Raman gain was introduced to compensate strong absorption experienced by the edge state during propagation. Our observations pave the way to ex-perimental exploration of topological photonics on nonlinear, reconfigurable platform.

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.
